What can you see and do on a boat rental in France?

There are so many places to see in this rich country that it’s hard to narrow down! Here are some of the top sailing destinations for a yacht charter in France.

When speaking about France it's essential to mention Paris, the most famous, and one of the most beautiful cities in France and also a possible destination for a yacht charter. For a romantic river cruise where you can see some of Europe’s most important cultural sites and get a proper taste of French culture, visit Paris by boat.

In Brittany, a region where boating is a common passion, discover the Emerald Coast. In the north you have Bréhat and Ouessant and towards the south there’s Quiberon, Belle-Île and Bénodet. Sail around maritime cities like Saint-Malo, Quimper, Lorient, Brest, Concarneau and Vannes. And don't forget to navigate through the Glénans archipelago!

French Riviera

On the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur), you will be able to rent motorboats for day trips as well as sailboats and catamarans of all sizes for your cruises on the Mediterranean Sea from Marseille, Cannes, La Ciotat and more. Set sail to the stunning islands by Hyères, discover the Calanques National Park or even cruise around Billionaires' Bay. You can start your mesmerising sailing experience along the French Riviera with a yacht charter in Cannes .

On the Isle of Beauty, the change of scenery is unreal. You won’t get tired of sailing to Bonifacio, diving in the Lavezzi archipelago or going to the beautiful Sanguinaires islands.

What is the best time to rent a boat in France?

Sailing season in France is usually between April and October. However, it’s important to know that the water temperature varies according to the region. In Brittany, it is around 20°C while in the Mediterranean, the water is generally warmer and closer to 25°C. If possible, it’s best to avoid sailing during the months of July and August when tourist crowds are at their highest.

Yacht charter in France with a skipper!

With Click&Boat, you can book a boat rental with an experienced skipper in France. A local nautical expert will handle all of the sailing logistics and show you hidden treasures that you might not have visited otherwise.

You will be able to become a competent crew member and take advantage of learning how to handle a boat and become a true sailor if you wish! But if you want to relax, that’s not a problem either. Let your skipper or crew take care of everything from navigating, anchoring and docking. It’s true that a skippered vessel is typically more expensive, but the benefits of having one on board are endless. For a customised sailing holiday, consider charter a yacht in France with a skipper!

What type of boat is best for a France yacht charter?

Finding the ideal boat for your France yacht charter is not always easy. Let us give you some tips on how to find the right type of boat according to your needs & desires.

Motorboats and RIBS

For daily rentals, a motorboat or RIB is your go-to. Contrary to sailboats and catamarans, chartering a motorboat in France will give you access to many nautical leisure activities such as wakeboarding, tubing, etc. In addition, navigating by motorboat or RIB makes it easier to visit small magical creeks.

A sailboat is the boat choice for travellers seeking exploration. A sailboat charter is recommended for cruising along the French Riviera to Corsica or to enjoy the Breton coasts. However, be advised that if you are a novice sailor or if you get seasick easily, a sailboat is not a good choice as it can be unstable and sway a lot on the water.

For a relaxing cruise with family or friends, we recommend a catamaran. It is a spacious and stable vessel, perfect for sailing on the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its design, it will allow you to access unique and less accessible coves and waters than other vessels.

Yacht charter in France is a five-star option to enjoy maximum comfort on board during your cruise on the "French Riviera".

Finally, for a river cruise, houseboats prove to be the best choice. They are like floating hotels, perfect for slow-life enthusiasts and tranquil navigation.

Tips for Yacht Charter on the Côte d’Azur

To make your rental easy and your boat trip successful, pay attention to these tips:

  • Ensure that the boat you rent suits your needs, considering the purpose of your vacation. For instance, ensure there is enough room for you to be secure and comfortable if you want to soak up the sun.
  • Ensure that you understand and are comfortable with the terms and conditions set by the individual or company you are renting from by thoroughly reading them.
  • It’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the yacht’s itinerary and nearby attractions beforehand. You may add variety to your daily life on a yacht in this way, and you might even find your calling as a guide.
  • A yacht vacation is fantastic, but as with any vacation, you need to be ready for everything. It’s best to talk to the crew ahead of time about any organizational concerns and potential complications. Seasickness is the primary issue, to which no one is immune, and it can develop suddenly and subtly. Ensure you have the appropriate anti-motion sickness medication in your first aid kit to prevent being caught off guard.
  • Delicious cuisine is an indispensable part of a trip. Take advantage of this unique chance and plan ahead for breakfasts and lunches on your yacht. They are sure to be memorable. To learn more about the boat’s amenities, such as kitchen appliances, space, and other facilities already on board, feel free to get in touch with us for detailed information.
  • Regardless of the yacht’s size, avoid overpacking; bring only what is essential for your trip. Depending on the season, consider wearing loose-fitting clothing like a T-shirt, swimsuit, or fleece is it’s cold. Wearing closed-toe shoes while traveling on board can help reduce the chance of stubbly toes and slipping.

Finally, make sure to reserve the boat charter on the French Riviera for a sufficient duration to complete all your planned activities.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boat and Yacht Rentals

How much does it cost to rent a boat with a captain for a whole day?

The cost of renting a boat depends on the type and size of the boat, its newness, the level of comfort, and the season (low or high). Therefore, below are only examples of starting prices.

  • Sailing yachts: from 400 euros per day + captain services + fuel;
  • Motor yachts: from 850 euros per day + captain services + fuel;
  • Catamarans: from 975 euros per day + captain services + fuel;
  • Motorboats: from 300 euros per day + captain services + fuel;
  • RIB: from 420 euros per day + captain services + fuel;
  • Luxury yachts: from 4000 euros per day + captain services + fuel.

Captain services typically range from 150 to 300 euros per day.

What is the minimum rental order for a boat?

In most cases, the minimum boat rental order is one day during the high season, while in the low season, it is possible to rent a boat for half a day. However, it should be noted that there are always exceptions to the rule, so if you need a boat for half a day during the high season, this option can also be found, although such options will be significantly fewer.

How far in advance do I need to book a boat?

During the high season, we recommend booking a boat as early as possible, ideally a month or even earlier, if feasible. In the low season, booking a week in advance is usually sufficient.

What are the popular boat rental routes on the French Riviera?

  • Nice – Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat – Monaco:  This route takes you from the bustling Nice through the picturesque coasts of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to the luxurious Monaco. Along the way, you can enjoy magnificent views and exquisite seaside restaurants.
  • Cannes – Lérins Islands:  The journey from Cannes to the Lérins Islands offers an opportunity to explore these beautiful and relatively unexplored places with their quiet bays and historical landmarks. • Antibes – Juan-les-Pins – Sainte-Marguerite Island:  This route includes visiting the scenic bays of Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, as well as a stop at Sainte-Marguerite Island with its secluded beaches and historical landmarks.
  • Monaco – Nice – Antibes – Cannes – Saint-Tropez:  Start your yacht route in Monaco, admiring the majestic Port Hercules and the Monte Carlo Casino, then head along the coast to Nice to enjoy views of the Promenade des Anglais from the sea. Continue sailing to Antibes, where you can see the historic old town and the Vauban port. Next up is Cannes with its famous Boulevard de la Croisette and luxurious beaches, perfect for water sports. Finish your journey in Saint-Tropez, enjoying the glamour of famous beach clubs and the picturesque old port, with the option to anchor in the Pampelonne bay.

When does the boating season start on the French Riviera?

Thanks to the amazing climate and nearly year-round sunny weather, the sailing season starts in April and lasts until October. The peak tourist season is in the summer, which is considered the high season on the French Riviera.

Can I host a private event on board, such as a birthday, bachelorette party, or wedding?

Our boats can accommodate any private or corporate event.

What is the maximum number of passengers a boat can accommodate?

The majority of boats can accommodate between 10 to 12 people. However, our fleet also includes yachts and catamarans that can accommodate 15, 20, 30, 60, 80, and even up to 200 people for events with a large number of guests.

Are there any restrictions on departure and return times?

Typically, most boat trips start at 10:00 and end at 18:00, but alternative start and end times can be arranged if necessary.

Is fuel included in the boat rental price?

Generally, fuel costs are not included in the basic boat rental price and are paid separately. The cost of fuel depends on the fuel consumption of each specific boat model. Whether fuel costs are included in the rental or paid separately is indicated in the pricing description on each boat’s page.

From the stunning coastlines of the Cote d'Azur and French Riviera in the south of France to the island of Corsica or the feisty Atlantic coast, this is a diverse and beautiful country to charter a yacht and have the sailing holiday of a lifetime. Though everywhere you sail is distinctively French the country's culture is as different from end to end as Norman calvados and fine champagne.

Whether the cool and busy seaways of Biscay and la Manche or the warm and comfortable Mediterranean you will be spoiled for choice as to what you could want from sailing France's seas. A famed and tough seafaring nation in its own right, the country lionizes and dominates the world of extreme solo sailing. Crowds at least as big as those watching the Tour de France see off and welcome its heroes on races like the Golden Globe and Vendee Globe.

You will find some ports extremely crowded at certain times of year but can soon find somewhere to hide away from the babbling rabble thanks to the nature of the country's vast and wonderful coastline. So what are you waiting for? Get a yacht charter in France with Borrow A Boat today!

Hiring A Yacht In France

With most European and many international sailing qualifications accepted by France yacht charter companies, you can organize a boat rental easily through Borrow A Boat. You will need insurance or a security deposit before you go but that isn't different from the rest of the world.

Many people choose to have a Captained or fully crewed charter yacht to sail aboard - effectively letting go of all responsibilities to focus on rest and relaxation. Whether on a superyacht or a smaller affair you are on a mini-cruise ship and can just enjoy being in the moment wherever you go. There are stretches of coastline with a few hours of travel required between ports but you can find plenty of opportunities to wander around markets, drink the local alcohol and enjoy the world-renowned food that might come from a Michelin-starred restaurant or a small bistro. There is so much to explore and enjoy in France that many never tire of it.

Best Areas To Charter A Yacht In France

There are three broad areas in which to charter a yacht in France - Southern France, Corsica; and Biscay and the Channel.

Southern France

A French Riviera yacht charter has to be on the bucket list of everyone who enjoys luxury yacht charter regularly. Whether Cannes, Nice, or the principality of Monaco on the Cote d'Azur you will be beguiled by the great sailing conditions and the fun to be had ashore on the sandy beaches, the Mediterranean Coast, and in the bars, restaurants, and casinos ashore. This is one of those Departments of France that is both French and uniquely its own in culture. Not far off the south of France are Les Iles d'Or, small paradise islands just offshore near Cap d'Antibes. The slightly larger island Porquerolles is close too - a worthy pause on an island and coastal hopping boat rental in France.

The Mediterranean island of Corsica is also very much of its own kind in terms of culture. Mountainous, rocky Corsica is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte who led the country in wars around Europe in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Pop across the sea to Italian Sardinia too! Being in EU waters you will only need your passport to land there.

The Bay of Biscay and the Channel

The Bay of Biscay and the coastline of La Manche (Brits call it the Channel) shouldn't be ignored either thanks to their challenging sailing conditions and very different vibe to that of southern France. Don't forget the wines of the Loire or the exquisite Norman calvados apple brandy!

Best Towns To Charter A Yacht In France

At the ultra-luxury yacht charter end of the scale, you can get a superyacht from Cannes or Monaco on the Mediterranean Coast. These come with full crews and often tenders and toys that will keep you entertained away from the stress of life ashore. Eat, drink and party to your heart's content and only see those you want around you.

Out of Cannes, you will find a range of yacht rentals available from 50 meter plus mammoths to modest 40ft plus sailing yachts that will still be comfortable for you and your group.

Marseilles, Nice, and Toulon are among many other yacht rental centers on the Mediterranean coastline.

In Corsica you have Calvi and Maccinagio.

Northern France

Biscay France has Les Sables d'Olonne, Brest, Bordeaux and la Rochelle amongst others. On the coast of La Manche you have Cherbourg, Le Havre and Caen as well as Calais, Dieppe and of course the nearby Channel Islands that are far closer to France than their owner, the UK!

Types Of Yachts To Rent In France

There are a wide variety of yachts to charter in France according to your wants, budget, and needs. Let's have a look at a few types and discuss them.

Motor Yacht

Ranging from fully crewed luxury 70-meter superyacht giants to smaller yachts a family of four can handle on their own, a motor cruiser could be your choice. You're not limited by the wind, though you will pay for the fuel to get you everywhere. At speed, they can be thrilling and you can sit inside should the weather change and still, get where you're going!

Motor catamaran

Often better appointed with luxuries than their monohull equivalents of the same size, motor catamarans have shallower drafts and more space for entertaining aboard. Thanks to their draft you can explore shallower waterways too.

Sailing catamaran

Unless you go for a fully crewed larger vessel, sailing catamarans are the height of luxury you and your group of sailing types can enjoy. Many will have en-suite showers and heads in every stateroom and of course plenty of entertaining space in the saloon.

Thanks to often having two engines these are far maneuverable in port, but having shallow drafts and greater leeway these charter yachts are more suited to the constant winds of the Mediterranean than the changeable conditions of Biscay and the Channel.

Monohull sailing yacht

The workhorse of yachting charters these are good in most sailing conditions from beating into a Biscay gale to blasting downwind on the Mistral. You can pay for something extremely comfortable and spacious but a family of four on a smaller budget can enjoy a week or two for a fee that competes with an all-inclusive holiday in the Balearics.

Canal/Riverboats

Built to get under bridges, though a lot more spacious and comfortable than British narrowboats, these crafts are great for exploring France's extensive inland waterway network. The Loire and Seine are two rivers that are navigable for hundreds of miles inland and allow you to see parts of France that you never could either by car or on a yacht.

Captained or Bareboat Yacht Charter in France

What do you want from a dream yacht charter in France? Just to relax and have every need catered to? Or to go on a self-supported holiday where you are in charge of your own adventure?

Captained yacht charter

For an extra fee on top of that for the yacht charter itself, you can have a Captain sailing the boat for you. You need no sailing experience or qualifications and the Captain will know the best places to take you. You just focus on having fun and relaxing in luxury.

If you want to learn seamanship and sailing while you're at it you can participate as much or as little in getting from A to B as you want.

You will have to pay for the Captain, their food, and a tip at the end of the boat rental period.

Bareboat charter

If you just want to cut loose and have the sailing qualifications to do it then a bareboat yacht charter may be your best bet. You will decide where to go and what to do. You will navigate, sail and run the vessel.

You also get privacy with your friends and loved ones - and don't have to pay for the Captain or their meals!

Crewed barge rental

Lie back and chill out with everything is taken care of from food to getting about France's inland waterways. This is a fantastic way to tune the modern world out and relax while everything is taken care of, watching the world go by as someone else sets about giving you time without responsibility!

Self-driving boat rental

Unlike chartering a yacht on the sea, you don't need any boating qualifications to set sail with your friends and or family on a trip like this. All you need is an idea of where you're going! Inland waterway self-drive boat rental is one of the best ways to explore France and its extensive network of canals and rivers.

Do you need a license to rent a Yacht in France?

For a bareboat charter, you need the appropriate sailing qualifications required to take charge of a vessel.

This can be the International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

All yacht charter companies recognize RYA qualifications from the Day Captain and up.

Many yacht charter companies also recognize national qualifications from outside Europe such as the ASA 104 Bareboat certificate.

If you have a CEVNI qualification then it will be very easy to do a self-drive inland waterway boat rental and you will be able to explore more of the waterways involved. However, you will be shown the rules of navigating French waterways and issued with a Carte de Plaisance if not.

If you are on a Captained charter however you don't need any license.

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In France

The summer school holiday season is the most popular time of year to rent a yacht in France but isn't always the best. Come July and August it can be fiercely hot on the French Riviera but there again you could always sail in more northern climes at that time of year.

It is quieter outside of school holidays and a lot cheaper too. Try May or September in Corsica or Mediterranean France where the weather is cooler and the crowds aren't so intense.

Sailing Weather In France

Mediterranean France is often placid and warm in the summer months - expect temperatures in the 30s and nice sea breezes at times. The Atlantic and Channel coasts are very pleasant most of the time too. Expect cooler temperatures (the high 20s and low 30s) and a steady northerly or easterly in cyclonic conditions that tend to mark the summer months in this region.

It isn't all gin-clear days and calms though! The NW Mistral wind that blasts down the Rhone Valley can build to quite dangerous levels throughout the summer, with the strong and steady wind blowing along the French Rivieraremorselessly for days on end. That said in summer you can expect a calmer and gentler wind most of the time. As ever when sailing, keep an eye on the weather for the next 24 hours every day.

Atlantic westerlies thrash through the Channel and barrel through the Bay of Biscay throughout the year - this does mean you need to keep an eye on the weather. In mid-summer, it can be almost flat calm and so gentle as to be frustrating depending on the location of the Azores High.

How much does it cost to rent Yachts in France?

What's your budget? A charter fee of €2000 for a group of up to six adults sailing on a bareboat arrangement will get you a comfortable 12-meter sailing yacht for a week. Expect to pay €2000 a day for a luxury sailing catamaran in peak season. You can pay €20,000 a day and up for no-holds-barred luxury!

Remember you will have to pay either a non-refundable damage insurance premium or leave a refundable security deposit from your credit card with the yacht charter broker before you cast off.

You will also need a budget for food, fuel, and nights out. You don't always have to moor in a marina (€20 a night and up) but can drop the hook and anchor in a secluded anchorage. In some places, you may pay a fee to moor on a buoy though these are more secure than anchoring in unfamiliar waters.

Explore France By Renting A Yacht

France in all its glory and eccentricities is a country that families never tire of, visiting time and again to taste, feel, hear, see and smell this wonderful country in all its ways. Whether the beautiful beaches of the south of France or the mountainous coastline of Corsica, the challenging sailing of Biscay or the Raz du Seine, or the playful luxury of Monaco you will get everything you could possibly want from a French yacht charter.

Take time to explore the markets and perhaps challenge yourself with the local cuisine - the French eat every bit of most animals except their squeaks! The wines and beverages are different in every region and often have Appellation Controlee status, be it Calvados in Normandy or Champagne in the Champagne region. The country is justifiably proud of its rich and varied culture and in exploring it you will find delights at every turn.

So what are you waiting for? Find a yacht to rent on Borrow A Boat today!

Yacht rental in France is legal as long as the provider meets all the regulations and legal framework put in place by the French and EU governments.

You can rent almost any kid of yacht from a giant superyacht to a small speedboat. It largely depends on your budget and needs for your time on the water.

Your budget is the first thing. You should consider where and when you wish to rent a yacht in France. You should consider your skills and qualifications and whether you want a skipper to help you on your journey.

The most popular time is the school summer holidays. If you don't have children, May and September may be better as it is quieter and cheaper on French waters.

You will have to pay up to 50% upfront on booking the yacht rental. Upon arrival, you will also pay either a security deposit on your credit card or can buy insurance to cover that.

If you are in immediate danger at sea then call MAYDAY on VHF Channel 16. If you can get to safety under your own steam or the breakdown occurs while in port you should phone the yacht charter company for advice.

Who's coming with you? Kids or older adults will influence your decision. Where do you want to go? What's your budget? Have you the appropriate sailing qualifications? Will you need a professional skipper?

If you are from an EU country, Switzerland, Iceland or Norway then you will not. If you are from the US, Australia, New Zealand or Canada or parts of Africa then you will be OK as long as you stay no more than 90 days. All other nationalities should check with the French Consul or Embassy in your country.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Motor or sailing yacht charter in Southern France?

Whether you opt for a  motor boat  or  sailing yacht charter  in Southern France depends on your preferences. A motor yacht typically offers larger volume, more onboard amenities, and enhanced comfort levels than a comparatively sized sailing yacht. On the other hand, sailing yachts are desired for the romance they offer and the enhanced connection charterers enjoy with the ocean. Of course, sailing yachts are more sustainable than motor yachts, using less fuel as they instead harness the power of the wind.

Northrop and Johnson have a superb fleet of sailing yachts and motor boats for charter in Southern France, from  30 meters  (98-foot) to more than 100 meters (382-foot). Contact our charter experts for the best selection of charter yachts on the French Riviera.

Yacht Charter in France

Armonee by Couach - Top rates for a Charter of a private Motor Yacht in France

France yacht charter

As the world's luxury yacht charter capital, France offers beautiful and romantic coastline cities, exquisite cuisine, and cultural treasures. The French Riviera, on the Mediterranean, offers chic coastal towns and famous for being the maritime playground of the rich and famous. However, France's Atlantic side is a more rugged and rustic sailing paradise, offering perfect conditions in the summer, with rocky coasts and fishing villages. Whether you're looking for a chic and captivating sailing adventure or a more historical and rugged experience, a yacht charter in France has it all.

How much to charter a yacht in France?

Being the world's luxury yacht charter capital, you will see the grandest, most beautiful superyachts you will ever see in your lifetime on France's Mediterranean coast. If you think only superyachts sail here, then think again. Catamarans and sailboats are also offered in France, perfect for small groups and shorter sailing distances. A sailboat yacht charter in France can cost around $1,700. This price is typical for a 30-foot sailboat with two cabins. A catamaran offering a more traditional cruising style can cost around $7,000 per week, with four cabins and a length of 39 feet. And lastly, a luxury yacht with six cabins and 242 feet in length can cost around $850,000 per week in France. This type of vessel usually comes with luxury amenities such as a pool on deck and other luxury features, including a gym or salon.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in France?

There are two areas of France that offer excellent sailing locations. On the side of the Atlantic is Normandy, and on the side of the Mediterranean is the world-famous French Riviera. Brittany's coastal community is located on the Atlantic side of France and offers rugged coastline scenery, tide-swept beaches, and dazzling blue seas. However, in winter, the Atlantic pounds the shore, so the best time to charter a yacht in Brittany is during the summer or the months of April to October.

With 2,700 km of coastline, Brittany is often called "a sailor's delight." Normandy, on the Atlantic coast as well, offers a long, dramatic, and historical coastline. With charming towns, historical beaches where World War II was fought, and being the home of Impressionism. You can find the former home and studio of the famed Impressionist painter Claude Monet in Giverny. And on the island of Mont St. Michel, you can find an iconic abbey and a historic church worth visiting. With 600km of coastline, several waterways, lakes, and rivers, Normandy offers a sailing destination for history buffs.

And of course, let’s now proceed to the French Riviera on the Mediterranean coast. Yacht charters have plenty of options to choose from in this beautiful side of France. The summer playground of the rich and beautiful, there is more to the French Riviera than its casinos and celebrities. Cruise along the coast and visit the renowned coastline towns and cities of Cannes, Nice, Antibes, St. Tropez, and even Monaco's city-state, where you will find the most glamourous superyachts moored on the luxury marinas.

And to top it all off, Corsica's island is a definite must for a yacht charter holiday. Close to the Spanish island of Sardinia, Corsica offers dramatic scenery, beautiful medieval towns, and historic beachfront villages. Located in the south of France, it offers 1200km of coastline, plenty of bays and beaches, and rock formations. The islands of Calvi, Ajaccio, and Propriano make up the most beautiful yacht charter itinerary in Corsica.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in France?

Paris may not have nearby beautiful islands to visit or coastline to boast. Still, the River Seine is a popular yacht charter location for epic views of the Paris skyline, golden statues that light up at night, and world-famous architecture. Sunset cruises, dinner cruises, and historical tours on the River Seine offer luxury cruises on the world's most visited city. Yacht charters in Paris can start with a tour of the River Seine, then cruise out into the English Channel, and finish off the itinerary in Normandy.

And when talking about luxury yacht charters, the French Riviera certainly doesn't disappoint. These coastal towns will present you with some of the most luxurious, glamorous, and most exquisite superyachts worldwide. You will see these mega yachts cruising along the Mediterranean coast during the summer seasons, mooring from Cannes to Antibes, and down to Monaco, to St. Tropez. Get a taste of the deluxe lifestyle as you make your way to these chic towns, where you shop till you drop, rub shoulders with celebrities and the elite, and dine on the finest French cuisine you can't find anywhere else in the world.

And as you cruise on your private luxury yacht, don't' forget to step inland to Monte Carlo in Monaco and have a game or two in any of its famous casinos. France offers a fantasy world of romance, intrigue, and natural beauty. With some of the most beautiful and luxurious luxury yachts in its waters, a yacht charter is simply the most excellent way to discover this country and experience an unforgettable French holiday.

ENQUIRE ON South Of France YACHT CHARTER

South of france yacht charter faq.

The cost of chartering a yacht in the South of France will start at around $20,000 a week, plus an additional 30% advanced provisioning allowance (APA), 14% VAT, and a discretionary tip. The APA will cover the food, drinks, fuel, and berthing during your travels, and the tip remains at the discretion of the client but is advised anywhere between 10% to 20% of the charter fee to thank the crew for their efforts.

The starting price for a yacht charter in the South of France will be around $20,000 for a week for 6-8 guests plus expenses. There’s a vast selection of yachts available in the area, with many size categories to choose from:

- A 20m sailing yacht will cost around €20,000pw + all - A 25m motor yacht will cost around €25,000pw + all - A 30m yacht will cost around €60,000pw + all - A 40m superyacht will cost around €175,000pw + all - A 50m superyacht will cost around €275,000pw + all

The Mediterranean high season runs for 8 weeks from July to August. However, the area remains busy from the Monaco Grand Prix at the end of May until the Monaco Yacht Show in late September. Therefore, the Mediterranean season can be regarded as being 16 weeks long.

Most of the yacht charters in the South of France will start in one of the region’s main marinas, such as Monaco’s Port Hercules. A great cruise is from Monaco to St Tropez, passing by Eze, St Jean Cap Ferrat, Antibes and Cannes.

Our charter broker Lucrecia Vogogna has cruised the South of France extensively and recommends:

- St Tropez - Spend your day admiring the original architecture surrounding the port, and take the time to enjoy a cocktail by the beach while people watching. - Cannes - Home to the famous Film Festival, check out the Promenade de la Croisette. And be sure to take a look at the lavish boutiques and shopping streets. - Villefranche - A picturesque old town nestled along the Côte d’Azur that has long been favoured among the yachting elite. - Cassis - Smaller vessels can access the narrow Calanques, and divers can explore the cliffs. - Porquerolles - Find the hidden sandy beaches, marine life and flora and fauna.

FAQs about Self-Drive Boat Hire In France

Where can i cruise on a self-drive hire boat.

Almost anywhere! There are over a hundred hire boat bases throughout France that each keep a (limited) number of differently-sized boats for couples, families and groups. The major rivers, however, are out of bounds – the Seine (including Paris), the Rhine, Rhone and the Gironde – because they are too busy with commercial traffic or have strong currents or tides.

Can I take a one-way cruise? If so, how do I get back to my car?

yacht rental france

What's included in the price of hiring the boat?

When you collect your boat it will be freshly cleaned and set up with a gas bottle, a full tank of diesel and a full tank of water to last your week. It will also have a fully fitted kitchen – the luxury boats are modern and very high-spec – and all bedding required. A full list of extras will be supplied with your booking form, so you can purchase additional items such as cleaning kit, bar-b-cue and bikes to carry on board.

This will be our first time. Is it easy to drive a hire-boat?

Yes, but it’s not quite like a car. Steering may require a few complete turns of the wheel in order to head in the direction you want and some boats have a joy stick. Some boats also have a bow and stern thruster to assist movement sideways. Don’t worry, instruction is given before you set off. Travel by boat on the canals is s-l-o-w and speeding destroys not only your peaceful holiday but the canal banks too. We recommend that the ladies drive the boat and the men do the rope work; techniques develop with practice but the latter requires more physical strength.

Our Unique Expertise – France, Cruising the Waterways and Self-Drive Boating We’ve explored the rivers and canals of France on our own boat since 2003, logging up over 10,000km along most waterways, in most regions, at all times of year. Independent, impartial and enthusiastic, we have personally visited and know every fleet and many of their boats published here.

Popular French Self-Drive Boat Routes

Delve into the different regions to discover more about each destination’s opportunities.

The concentrated richness of scenery, history, culture, leisure and pleasure is such that even just a few weeks spent voyaging the canals and rivers of one small part of France is an experience you’ll never forget. Such a variety of places and scenes, such a variety of different waterways to explore and people to make friends with.

France has an amazing 8,000 km (5,000 miles) of wonderful navigable rivers and canals. Cruising at a leisurely speed of 5km an hour, with days spent exploring all the fascinating places along the way, means many happy holidays waiting for you ahead!

Nice

Nice Yacht Charters

Nice is a popular yacht charter destination in the French Riviera. Despite the fact that today, Nice is the second most popular destination in France – next to Paris, of course – it wasn’t until the late 18th-century that its beauty started attracting A-list appeal.

Boasting an ideal Mediterranean climate all year round, Nice first gained traction as a winter destination for English aristocrats; and once its beauty was confirmed, later became a muse for Western artists most talented painters: like Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Arman, and Niki de Saint Phalle, to name a few.

The meeting point of old-world opulence, sunny shores, art enthusiasts, delicious fare, and seaside views, Nice is a haven for the romantics. To experience the true heart of the French Riviera, watch the sunset as you walk along the Promenade des Anglais, see the art hanging on the walls of Fondation Maeght or grab a drink at one of the coastal city’s celebrity-filled nightclubs. When the sun is shining – which, in Nice, it always is – wander through Cours Saleya, one of the globe’s most popular flower and food markets, for fresh produce brought in by the local harvest.

It’s worth a visit; after all, Nice is considered the “foodie capital” of the world. Nice is the perfect place to visit on your France yacht charter to expand your palate with quaint bistros and boulangeries to elegant brasseries and fromageries.

Nice Yacht Charter Highlights

  • Classic Mediterranean boardwalk; Promenade des Anglais
  • Quaint Vieille Ville (Old Town) & Nice Cathedral
  • Cours Saleya Market
  • Amazing French cuisine, bakeries, and wine bars
  • Hidden beaches of Cap Ferrat

When to charter a yacht in Nice

Like most of the Mediterranean, summer is charter season in Nice. The season begins in May, and runs through early October. Summer yacht charters in Nice offer plenty for guests to explore and experience. The Nice Jazz Festival in July is a summer season staple, with nightly concerts to Nice’s historic Plaza Massena.

With summer temperatures in the 70s and 80s, many choose to soak up the sun at the Nice’s sandy beaches. Castel Plage, situated on a stunning private beach, is one of Nice’s most exclusive beach clubs, and a favorite stop for Nice yacht charters. Other must-sees during the summer include: Football matches at OGC Nice, the coastal trail on Cap-Ferrat, and Nice’s bustling flower and produce market.

Nice France Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Nice France yacht charters

Promenade des Anglais

Named “La Prom” for short, the Promenade des Anglais, or ‘English Walk,’ runs along the pebbly shore of the Nicean coastline; making it the focal point of the city, and a metaphorical compass for the rest of Nice’s frequented attractions. Lined with palms and boasting enchanting sunset views, “La Prom” is the perfect spot for a relaxing bicycle ride, a slow skate or a romantic evening stroll. Along its path are a couple of other sites worth seeing: the majestic 1912-built Hôtel Negresco and the art deco Palais de la Méditerranée, which exists as a part of an impressive, four-star palace.

Colline du Château

French for “Castle Hill,” Colline du Château is a historic hill that holds the remains of Nice’s first Ancient Greek settlement; which, considering its existence thousands of years ago, was considered to be the area’s first true Medieval town. While most of the castle has since crumbled, today, the site houses a large park and botanical garden, waterfalls, the remains of a former 11th-century Cathedral, walkways made of vibrant, 20th-century mosaics, and sweeping panoramic views of Nice and the Baie des Anges below.

Cours Saleya

Situated in the heart of Vieille Ville, or “Old Town” – in a city that is already considered to be one of the world’s most desired culinary destinations – Cours Saleya is a famous fruit, flower and vegetable market, highly regarded for its colorful produce, seductive aromas, and on select days, precious antiques. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Cours Saleya welcomes travelers and locals alike to peruse its bountiful stalls; and when they’re done, traipse through its surrounding shops and enjoy dinner at one of the nearby, likely award-winning restaurants.

Charter a private yacht in Nice

If you want to explore the French Riviera, Nice is a prime launching point. With Cannes, Monaco and St Tropez nearby, a private yacht charter in Nice offers a full range of possibilities for itineraries. Not to mention, Nice is renowned for its exclusive marinas, from the Port de Nice right in the heart of Old Town, to Port de Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.

When you charter a private yacht in Nice, you’ll be in the heart of the French Riviera. Taste the city’s many famous dishes, (like the classic Salade Nicoise, or street-food favorite Socca). Explore the stunning Cap Ferrat, with its beautiful anchorages, or cruise to nearby ports in St Tropez.

The community's advice on the destination

Rent a boat with or without skipper in france.

with SamBoat. Choose from a wide selection of sailboats, motorboats, RIBs, catamarans, yachts and canal boats. We offer a huge range of boats to hire from 50€/day. With the best offers, SamBoat helps you to find the ideal yacht charter in France for the perfect vacation.

Renting a boat in France

In France, you will have an endless choice of destinations to sail from. From world-famous events to sailing competitions known globally, you will find exactly what you're looking for in a dream vacation. When it comes to sailing in France, you will have access to not only the coasts but the inland waters that are beautiful and charming. Charter a yacht in Marseille  or rent a boat in Toulon, there is something for every sailor in France. Having more than 18,000km of coastline, France has the world’s largest maritime surface.

With the amount of sailors and its long standing traditions, France is known largely as a maritime nation. When travelling along the coast, you will notice the rich abundance of cities and towns along with a beautiful countryside that will surely provide a memorable experience. After you rent a boat, you can explore the vast array of inland waters that will provide a rich scenery and a diverse offering of regional cuisine and drink.

In France, you’ll quickly learn that each geographic region is unique and provides its own special personality. Aside from its gastronomical treasures and incredible wines, the landscape and coasts are what help to make this country a main destination for over 85 million tourists each year. Whether you choose to charter a catamaran in France and explore the coastline or rent a sailboat in France and enjoy the beautiful turquoise waters, the adventures in France are endless.

Pricing and   information  about hiring a boat in France

One of the most attractive things to sailors about France is the variety of coasts and options that are available. For instance, chartering a boat in Corsica is one of the best choices, as it has beautiful coasts and crystal clear water. The sailing season in France is pretty standard starting in May and running into the end of October. For most regions, the prices are highest starting in June and ending in August to mid-September. When chartering a yacht, prices will be on average between 350€ to 450€ per day for catamarans and sailboats. When renting motor boats, the range will be much larger. It is best to define your project by activity and see what boat best suits your needs. The prices will be a bit different depending if you would like to go diving or if you would like to simply explore the coast. Smaller motorboats will start around 150€ for the day.

Boat Availability

If your goal is to charter a yacht for the high season, you'll have to book well in advance. For summer charters, more than half of the boat rental service is already booked by March. If you book after this month, the number of the fleet that is booked goes up to near 80%. We recommend beginning your search for charters in November to ensure you find a boat that best suits your project. For day boats, the availability will depend on the port. In major ports, you'll have to book well in advance (we recommend at least 2-3 months before). In some instances, you may be able to find a day boat closer to the date of departure depending on available inventory.

Do you need a license to sail in France?

After you choose your destination, make sure you search for a boat that suits your exact needs. Choose a motorboat or sailboat, with or without skipper and make sure you fully explore the unique and beautiful country of France. In France, if you choose to rent a bareboat, the conditions will be different for motor boats and sailboats. When renting a sailboat, a license is not mandatory as long as you can provide a rich nautical CV detailing your previous experience. When renting a motorboat, a license is mandatory, unless you are renting a canal boat or with less than 6hp.

Discover the Different Regions

There is no need to introduce the Mediterranean.
