Talk about time-tested, the 19-foot Flying Scot has been in production since 1957 and remains a popular design today. Sloop rigged, with a conventional spinnaker for downwind work, the boat is an easily sailed family boat as well as a competitive racer, with over 130 racing fleets across the U.S. Its roomy cockpit can seat six to eight, though the boat is often sailed by a pair or solo. Also, a big L-shaped galley at the foot of the companionway, to starboard, and the head and shower stall just opposite, to port. As you can see the boat’s overall appeal offers great amenities along with excellent sailing performance.

This is a 39ft 3-cabin sailboat adequate for 6 or 8 persons. She has a wide and straight hull as well as a spacious cockpit that provides enough space to move around, relax, and dine outdoors. 9 Affordable Boats With Enclosed Cabins (with pictures)

Boats with enclosed cabins are great for boaters who want to spend a little more time out on the water.  Unfortunately, they are often out of the price ranges of most people.

However, just because most boats with enclosed cabins tend to be expensive, it doesn’t mean that they all are.

In this post, we’ll talk about nine affordable boats with enclosed cabins that you can buy today!

Cuddy Cabins

Cuddy cabins are great boats for people on a budget who are looking for a boat that offers an enclosed sleeping space.  These little boats provide their owners with an interior cabin at the front of the boat that can be set up to sit in or to sleep in.

However, they typically do not offer any other amenities such as galleys or heads.

This makes them great for day trips, weekend adventures, and boat camping excursions, but not very good for full-time living.

The Bayliner VR5 Cuddy

The Bayliner VR5 Cuddy is a 20’4” boat with a hull length of 18’4” a beam of 8’, and a draft of 2’10”.  A 150HP or 250HP engine can be attached to it, and a 33-gallon fuel tank is built to fuel these engines.

While this boat isn’t very large, it can still hold up to 8 people.

Of course, these eight people would not be able to move around freely in a boat of this size, but they would have plenty of seating options as this boat offers them in abundance.

One of the best features of this boat is its weight.  With the 150HP engine, the boat only weighs 3,131 pounds , and even with the 250HP engine, it only weighs 3,351 pounds.  This means the boat is easily towable for people with small trucks, SUVs, and even some minivans with towing packages.

The main area of this boat has comfortable wrap-around seating, and the captain’s chair swivels around to lineup with an optional teak dining table.  This makes this little cuddy cabin perfect for cruising around on lakes, rivers, the bay, and even through small channels.

2020 models of this boat sell for around $71,000.00. However, this model isn’t completely new to Bayliner, so if you want to reduce your expenses, you could get an older used VR5 for a bit cheaper.

Stingray 208CR Cuddy Cabin

The Stingray 208CR is another 20’ long boat with an 8’ beam.  This boat is a fiberglass boat, and it sports a V6 4.3-C 200 SX engine.  A 34-gallon fuel tank is used to fuel this boat.

Nine people can ride on the 208CR, and two people can sleep inside it.  It even has a freshwater tank of 6 gallons and a 25qt icebox.  With the 200HP engine, the dry weight of the boat is only 3,078 pounds, so it is definitely able to go on a trailer.

Up on deck, you’ll find two captain’s chairs and a bench that could realistically seat three adults.  This area is covered by a small bimini top and a front windshield.

At the stern of the boat, there is a nice little area for launching tubers, water boarders, water skiers, and even swimmers.  To get back onto the boat, one just needs to climb up the extendable ladder.

Move to the front of the boat, and you’ll find a small cabin that offers seating and a little place to sleep.  This area can also house a small portable toilet, but personally, I wouldn’t want to use a toilet in the same area that I intend to sit in and sleep in, so it’s best left for emergencies.

I couldn’t imagine being on this boat with eight other people, but it is perfect for a group of four or five people who want to have a nice day out on the water.  Passengers can rotate between doing water sports and resting in the cabin, and a couple could even spend the night out on the water from time-to-time.

This boat is very reasonably priced at $39,180.00 for a brand new 2020 model.

This cabin cannot be closed so you might want some special boat lights to keep mosquitos away .

Atlas Boat Works Pompano 23

The Pompano 23 is 23’ long and has a 7’ beam.  The dry weight on it is only 2,100 pounds, so it is easy to tow.  It has a small fuel capacity of only 30 gallons, but this should be plenty considering how light the boat is.  Also, the engine capacity is only 115HP max, so the engine won’t be eating up a lot of full either.

One of the nice features of this boat is that the cockpit can be enclosed with a canvas enclosure.  This gives the boat an additional indoor area on top of the small cuddy cabin.  You could use this to get changed in or simply to get out of the wind and sun.  Also, the stern of the boat is completely covered with a bimini top, so you never actually have to expose yourself to the hot midday sun.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a small vee berth and a portable toilet .  The berth can be converted to a small sitting area, but most people probably won’t use it as it is quite small.

Campion Allante 635

The 2019 Campion Allante 635 is a 22’ long fiberglass boat with a 200hp outboard gas engine.  This engine is fueled by a 60-gallon fuel tank, which is massive for a boat this size.  The larger fuel tank would be perfect for owners who want to spend a few nights out on the water in their little cuddy cabin.

Up on deck, there are two captain’s chairs and a small sitting area for four to five people behind them.  This sitting area has a round table attached to it with two built-in cup holders.  Move through this area, and there is a nice opening that can be used to access the rear of the boat.

Head inside the cabin, and once again, you’ll find a small sitting area that can be converted into a two-person sleeping area.  There is also a portable toilet that fits in between the sitting area.

The only dry weight listing I could find for the boat was 2,800 pounds , but it doesn’t list whether or not this weight includes the weight of the motor.

However, even if you add a couple of hundred pounds for the engine, you’ll still have a boat that is light enough and small enough to be towed easily.

Pricing for this boat is in the neighborhood of $50,000.00.

Cabin Cruisers

Cabin cruisers provide a lot more usable interior space.  They make wonderful weekend getaway boats and can even be used for extended vacations.  Some people even use these boats as full-time homes , but they are a bit limited in space for this purpose.

A cabin cruiser will feature at least one berth and will usually offer a head and a galley.  It may even offer multiple berths and even a lounge area.  You can often find these with air conditioners and heaters, and a generator can even be added to power these amenities when the boat isn’t running.

People who want a yacht but can’t quite afford one just yet often turn to cabin cruisers as they offer many of the benefits of a yacht but in a smaller package.

Boston Whaler Conquest 285

The Boston Whaler Conquest 285 is a smaller cabin cruiser.

Its length is 27’10,” and its beam is 9’6”  The dry weight without the engine is 7,300 pounds.  This is light enough that the boat could be trailered with a larger truck, but the width would make it difficult to tow around realistically.

With the high weight of the boat comes a large engine.  The engine on this is a 500HP engine.  This engine is fueled with a 200-gallon fuel tank.

The outside features a few captain’s chairs and a nice standing area that could be used for fishing.  This area also features a fridge and a small sink as well. At the bow, there is a small door so that the rear can be accessed for water sports.

The cockpit is completely enclosed, and there is seating for three.  Head through the cockpit, and you can enter the main salon, which features a berth that converts to a dining table, a small head, and a small kitchen.  There is also a cabin inside as well, which has a berth that can convert to a small seating area.

A thirty-gallon freshwater tank supplies the bathroom and kitchen with clean water, and a 6.5-gallon wastewater tank provides black water storage.  There is also a 26 gallon live well as well.

This boat sells new for several hundred thousand dollars, but you can buy them used for less than $50,000.00.

Grady White Express 330

The Grady White Express 330 is a 33’6” boat with an 11’7” beam.  It weighs 10,840 pounds without the engines.  The engine capacity is 850 HP, which comes in the form of two rear outboard motors.  To fuel these motors, there is a 331-gallon fuel tank.

The exterior of the boat is set up for cruising and for fishing, and the deck can be converted to be used for either purpose as there are foldaway benches built into it.  There is also a side door with a boarding ladder that could be used for swimmers and divers.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a forward vee berth, a double aft berth, a seating area with a 28” television, a port side galley, and a head with a 10-gallon holding tank.  With all of these items inside the cabin, there really isn’t a lot of room to move around.  This being said, you do have everything you could need for a long weekend or even a minimalistic full-time life out on the water.

A new Grady White Express 330 is going to cost over a quarter of a million dollars. 

However, you can buy used models for less than six figures.  Also, remember that a fiberglass boat can easily last a lifetime, so an investment in a 20-year-old Express 330 could be a great alternative to buying a summer vacation home.

Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

The Rinker 270 Express Cruiser is a 28’10” boat with an 8’6” beam.  It has a dry weight of 7,095 pounds and can sleep up to four people.

One of the best features of this boat is that it is small enough to be put on a trailer and large enough to live in.  This makes it very desirable for weekend adventurers and for people who wish to travel around the country with their boat in tow.

On top of this, the boat’s cabin offers 6’5” of headroom, which is more than many campers have to offer these days.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a vee berth as well as a double berth on either side of a galley kitchen and a small head.   This kitchen contains a one burner electric stove, a microwave, and a 2.3 cubic foot fridge.  For entertainment, there is a built-in Bluetooth stereo system.

On the outside, the cockpit features seating for three, and it is all covered with a bimini top.  Behind this, there is a section that contains dual benches that face each other.  Just past this is a back deck that would be easy to jump on and off of.  It also houses an extendable ladder that can be used by swimmers.

What I love about this boat is that you can find used models for as little as $20,000.00 and even brand new, you won’t have to sell your house to buy one.

Center Console Fishing Boats

Many boat manufacturers have caught onto the fact that it’s easier for anglers to sell their families on the idea of buying a fishing boat that’s also comfortable for passengers.  For this reason, they’re now building center console fishing boats with cabins and seating areas that rival cruising boats.

These boats are great for anglers because they have a full 360-degree area that they can fish from.  On top of this, they can bring their non-fishing family members with them, and they can hang out in the lounge areas or get some rest inside the cabin.

Here are a few examples of center console fishing boats with cabins.

Scout 350 LXF

The Scout 350 LXF features a large open bow with bench seating and a tanning deck.  The benches and the deck are both padded for additional comfort.

At the rear, there is rearward facing bench seating and plenty of open space for fishing.  This is partially shaded by the center console’s overhead cover.

The center of the boat features a cockpit with a roof and comfortable seating .  It also houses the door leading into the main cabin and adds some additional interior headroom for the shower and galley areas.

There isn’t a lot of room inside the cabin, but you will find a vee berth that converts to a dinette, a small galley kitchen with a sink and a microwave, and a head that houses a toilet and a shower.  These amenities are filled with a 30-gallon freshwater tank.

You could spend a day or even a weekend inside this cabin, but most would probably be reluctant to live inside of it full-time.  This being said, the outside decks are nice enough that you could stay out there in nice weather and never feel like you’re depriving yourself.

The boat comes in at 34’11” with a beam of 10’9”.  It has a deep draft of 23,” and a weight of 10,800 pounds with two twin Yamaha 350 engines included.  Powering the twin engines is a 334-gallon fuel tank.

This boat comes in at over $300,000.00 and might seem unaffordable at first.  However, you have to realize that both fishing boats and cabin cruisers often cost this much, and this boat actually combines both of them into one.

Dusky 227 Fish Around Cruiser

The Dusky 227 is a 22’7” longboat with an 8’2” beam.  This makes it a trailer-safe boat that can be used for fishing, cruising, and even sleeping in.  The engine on the boat is a 230HP engine with a 60-gallon fuel tank.  This fuel capacity is much lower than some of the cabin cruisers we discussed, but it is on-par with the cuddy cabins.

This boat is a lot less plush than some of the other boats we’ve looked at, but it appears to be a lot more functional in terms of fishing capabilities.  The bow features a small bench and an area that could be used for sitting against the rails.  These areas do not have any padding and are molded into the boat, so they should be ridiculously easy to clean, even after a full day of fishing.

There isn’t any seating at the stern or in front of the center console, which would make running around the boat to get to fishing poles a lot easier.  Move into this center console, and you’ll find a small bench that can be converted into a small vee berth.  Inside the bench is a storage compartment.

For people who want a little more luxury, a bench seat can be added behind the center console, and overhead cover can be added as well.  Additional padding can also be purchased to add over the built-in bench upfront.

A brand new Dusky 227 is very reasonable and can be had for as little as $55,000.00.

There are affordable boats with enclosed cabins at all levels.

The key is to decide how much you want to spend and choose a boat that meets both your needs and your budget!

Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach waterfront

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns this week with more nearly 1,000 vessels on display, including super yachts from around the world.

Tickets are on sale now for the show that runs March 21-24 along the West Palm Beach waterfront.

The show, which started in 1982, has grown to a major economic engine for the community, with last year's impact estimated at $1.05 billion statewide — nearly as much as the $1.3 billion Miami International Boat Show, said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, which owns the boat show.

"Palm Beach is really not that far behind Miami, and Miami is the biggest in the world," Freeman said. "That was really exciting."

This year's boat show features an expanded Super Yacht Show at Palm Harbor Marina, showcasing yachts that typically stretch longer than 80 feet and have a variety of luxurious amenities that include hot tubs, crew quarters, dance floors and sun decks.

"We have more super yachts there than we ever have before, and they're even bigger," Freeman said, noting that at 236 feet, the vessel Casino Royale takes the title of largest yacht at this year's show. The title of "most expensive yacht" goes to Come Together, a 196-foot vessel priced at $59.95 million.

"Everybody, when they think about super yachts, they think about Monaco and Miami, but Palm Beach is a real player in these boat shows and the yachting world," Freeman said.

Exhibitors continue to be drawn to the Palm Beach International Boat Show by the opportunity for high sales year after year when compared with other South Florida boat shows, she said.

"I've heard from several of them, this is their favorite show to attend," Freeman said, "And that's why, because their sales are higher at Palm Beach."

The show continues to make headway in improving its sustainability efforts, she said. After reducing single-use plastics, a major change this year is the addition of water bottle refilling stations throughout the show, Freeman said.

"I think that's exciting because everybody's talking about sustainability and how we can be more sustainable," she said. "Every year, we take little steps to be more sustainable."

Freeman said she is excited for this year's AquaZone presented by Nautical Ventures. The attraction showcases some of the "yacht toys" that are new or popular on the market.

"It's so cool, because there are people actually in the water demoing yacht toys, and it's usually the latest and greatest," she said. "There's always something new every year that we've never seen before."

The Palm Beach International Boat Show also features a range of seminars, demonstrations and discussions throughout the weekend, including mental health in yachting, tips to boat to the Bahamas, safe boating to protect sea turtles and how to address active threats and piracy.

Freeman, who has children, said she loves the Kids Fishing Clinics scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with captain Don Dingman.

"Captain Don has been doing this for years, and he does a fantastic job," Freeman said. "The kids actually get to go home with a free rod and reel once the clinic is over."

The association produces the Palm Beach International Boat Show with Informa Markets' U.S. Boat Shows division.

"As we gear up for the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show, we are excited for our return to Downtown West Palm Beach to celebrate the rich history of this esteemed event," Andrew Doole, president of U.S. Boat Shows at Informa Markets, said in a news release. "Each year, we’re grateful for the warm welcome and support from the community, which truly makes this event a highlight on the calendar for both residents and visitors alike."

Informa also produces the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show happening March 21-24, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. A Windward VIP ticket to the boat show includes admission to the art show as well.

In addition to serving as a cornerstone festival of spring in West Palm Beach, the boat show launched the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back program to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to local nonprofits, Freeman said.

The grant program had a soft launch last year and formalized the boat show's four-decade practice of giving back to the community, Freeman said.

"We're really excited about it," said Freeman, who added that the boat show team is working with the Community Foundation to manage the grant program, which they hope to grow. "That's something that's a super high priority for us."

Money raised through a portion of the boat show's ticket sales, optional add-ons and some related activities goes toward the fund.

The boat show in February announced that the first round of grants totaling $500,000 would go to 25 nonprofits that have marine-related programs or projects, including Florida Fishing Academy, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Florida Atlantic University, Inlet Grove High School, Palm Beach State College, Sea Turtle Adventures and Friends of Manatee Lagoon.

"We're hoping one day we'll be able to say that it's a million dollars," she said. "So fingers crossed. It relies on the success of the boat show and the support of the community. With that, we will continue to grow."

Alberta cabin, cottage prices spike in 2023 as Canada's recreational property market cools

Demand for lake and mountain homes strong last year, new national report shows.

Alberta led the country for price growth on cabins and cottages in 2023, with a national real estate report suggesting the increase is partly fuelled by one community near Edmonton with especially tight supply.

Royal LePage's 2024 recreational property report, released Wednesday, shows the median price of a single-family recreational home in Alberta was up 4.7 per cent in 2023, year over year.

Prices for the same types of properties in B.C. were essentially flat, and in Ontario, they decreased by 5.2 per cent.

Alberta waterfront property prices declined slightly in 2023, but they dropped more than eight per cent in Quebec, Ontario and B.C.

But Alberta's biggest jump by far is at Wabamun Lake, about 50 kilometres west of Edmonton, where the cost of single-family recreational properties spiked 53.5 per cent. That brings the median price for 2023 to just above $675,000 — nearly $250,000 higher than 2022.

Tom Shearer, broker-owner at Royal LePage Noralta Real Estate, said a few more expensive, modernized homes sold last year at Wabamun, and that's part of what's pushing that number up so quickly.

But he said there also haven't been enough new listings to keep up with demand, including from an influx of people relocating to Alberta and jumping into the real estate market.

"A lot of people that are moving to Alberta, and Edmonton specifically, are coming from Ontario, where they are passionate about their their ability to get out of town in the summer time and go to a lake," he said.

"So, I think there will be more competition for finding that beautiful lakefront property where you can hear the loons calling in the background."

Just north of Wabamun Lake, the median price of single-family recreational properties at Lac Ste. Anne declined 11.5 per cent, according to Royal LePage. At Pigeon Lake, southwest of Edmonton, the same category of homes saw a 13.8 per cent increase in 2023.

Real estate agent Charlene Anderson specializes in lake homes in communities west of Edmonton.

In her view, 2023 was a fairly standard year for recreational property activity, with a continuing trend of rising prices, especially for cabins at Wabamun Lake.

"There's generally always more than demand than supply … [Prices] have been steadily increasing since 2012."

Ontario, B.C. buyers eye Alberta cabins

Recreational properties are often a second, seasonal home for people with income or borrowing power to spare, or a place to retire.

YEGPro real estate agent Daniel Seitz helps clients to buy and sell in lake communities west of Edmonton. He said the COVID-19 pandemic ignited renewed interest in recreational properties , and demand is still going strong.

He's also noticed more buyers from Vancouver and B.C.'s Lower Mainland looking at  properties, as well as other parts of Alberta.

"Interestingly enough, we have quite a few buyers coming up from Calgary — the economics of having a lake place up here are pretty good," he said.

Roughly 90 kilometres west of Calgary in Canmore, where average recreational home prices are well into seven figures, the Royal LePage report shows the median single-family cost increased 4.4 per cent in 2023.

Inventory in the mountain community continues to fall well short of a balanced market, said Chezlene Kocian, with Re/Max Alpine Realty.

Kocian said the town has always been a place that draws Alberta buyers, but it's also appealing to people who are relocating, especially if they work remotely.

"If they don't need to be in a major centre, our price points compared to parts of Ontario are still fairly attractive," she said.

"Certainly that that influx of people into our province, I think, has started to to trickle down into the Canmore marketplace."

Royal LePage is projecting Alberta's recreational property prices will keep rising this year, with another four per cent increase.

The national real estate firm is also forecasting a rebound in Ontario and B.C., with median prices increasing by eight and five per cent, respectively.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

How TV’s ‘Maine Cabin Masters’ tries to preserve a tradition

Wrapping up their ninth season, a team of summer cabin restoration experts have found a fervent following, even as the cable network they’re on got a little more fancy.

MANCHESTER, Maine — Even in the chill of winter, tourists show up at the Kennebec Cabin Company just outside of Augusta, directly across from Mulligan’s gas station and the town’s only Dunkin’. It’s a specialty gift shop, it’s a restaurant, it’s a brand — and it’s the home base of the TV show “Maine Cabin Masters,” which, for devoted viewers, has become a touchstone for all that is Maine.

The show’s premise? So simple, friendly and warm it could bring on the spring thaw: Home builder Chase Morrill, 45, his sister, Ashley Morrill, 48, her husband, Ryan Eldridge, 49, and their friends and colleagues Dixie (Matthew Dix) and Jedi (Jared Baker) work together to transform aging, sagging and often dangerously leaning Maine cabins into beautiful three-season properties.

The Style section

Each episode of “Maine Cabin Masters” — which is wrapping up its ninth season on the Magnolia Network — follows Chase and his crew through several weeks of their busy spring and summer seasons spent working on properties that have often been handed down through generations: droopy-roofed retreats that face impossibly beautiful lakes or are set deep in the woods, staving off permanent decay.

With a cacophony of saws, nail guns and heavily accented (but good-natured) bickering and ribbing among the siblings and the crew, the magic happens over and over. What hooks viewers are the family dynamics but perhaps also just the Maine of it all. Typically at an episode’s end, drone cameras offer long, luscious, interstitial looks at Vacationland: The trees begin turning in autumn, the light glints off the water, the views stretch on forever. And all a viewer wants is to be there.

Instead, I came to Manchester in the dark of December — my fingers frozen to the steering wheel of the borrowed, beaten Volvo belonging to my sister — to get the Cabin Masters to at least clear this matter up: Why does the show’s title say “cabin,” when everyone in Maine calls cabins “camps”?

“We didn’t name the show,” Chase quickly says, while sitting in a cozy backroom of the Kennebec Cabin Company store with Ashley and Ryan.

“It’s hard for us to say cabin,” Ashley says.

The pair are generational Mainers. Their father was a home builder. They grew up spending some time each summer at a camp, which most non-Mainers would call a family cabin. Explaining it verges on the existential: How is a cabin really a camp? When is a camp not a cabin? And how is it different from a regular house?

Cabins stir thoughts of well-manicured second homes; camps are not that. To Chase: “Camp is a place you go where you just don’t have any worries and can relax. You’re not worried about how many people show up. You’re not worried about how scratched the floors get or —”

“How clean they are,” Ryan interjects.

Camp is not a second home. It is a place to be with the people you love and not worry whether the chairs match, or what’s on TV (because you usually don’t have cable, and in some camps, you may not even have electricity). But, as you see in the show, there is a large disparity between budgets and camp conditions. This monetary shift has caused Chase to reevaluate what he considers a camp: “I do think my understanding of camps has changed for the show, because we all grew up [with] not a lot of money. So camp was an old camp, but we see different budgets now.” Take, for example, a sprawling camp in Season 2 that had a budget of $50,000 and ended up having a life-size, outdoor checkerboard.

With higher budgets and bigger homes, you can see the disparity of homeownership in Maine, where, as of 2022, some 10 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Camps are often passed down through generations, which sometimes gives “Maine Cabin Masters” a whiff of privilege — until you see the toll that the years of wear and tear (and Maine winters) take.

“It doesn’t take long,” Ryan says, for cabins to fall into disrepair. Even if the structures are still functional, they may not be practical for a modern, growing family.

“We see it a lot of times where these kids who grew up going to camp every summer are now having kids, and they want them to have that same experience. But the camp might not be big enough and might not have modern amenities that make it possible to stay there for a longer period of time,” Ryan says. “We try and come and say: ‘Okay, what’s going to make this camp usable again for you?’”

N ot every family gets the opportunity to make their camp usable. Ryan laments the coastal Maine cabins that were passed down through generations, only to be lost because the property taxes got too high.

He finds it particularly special when families are able to pool their money to prevent the loss and when “Maine Cabin Masters” — with its low-budget, authentic Mainer ethos and Chase’s thrift-minded stockpile of salvaged building materials — can be a part of that rescue effort.

Part of the appeal of “Cabin Masters” is that the show is a road map for fixing up your own camp, Ashley says: “So when people inherit [camps], they’re able to do the simple things that you see on the show with these guys — jack and leveling it, to get it out of the dirt so [there’s] not so much rot.”

In addition to the unbeatable scenery, the show also has an easygoing, community vibe. Family stories are shared. The crew teases one another about the rival high schools they attended (Cony vs. Gardiner) and who got the better education in measurement math.

The ever-resourceful Ashley visits local artisans to help with decor ideas. She used to run a home goods store in Hallowell that sold upcycled furniture, and she often uses items belonging to an episode’s featured camp owners to add personal flair to the cabins. “Recently we did a camp, and this family is very musical,” Ashley says. “They had this old run-down piano — not fixable — so I ended up taking it apart completely and then used the piano keys to make a breakfast bar.” (Yes, you are now trying to picture this, but if you’ve ever seen “Maine Cabin Masters,” you just believe it.)

The show is a little more rugged than what’s usually shown on the relatively new Magnolia Network, but, in general, it’s in line with all carpentry TV, where, with some ingenuity and power tools, something run-down gets restored to its meaningfully rustic essence.

“Maine Cabin Masters” premiered in 2017 on the former DIY Network, a grittier offshoot of HGTV. DIY became Magnolia, the network of Chip and Joanna Gaines, who turned their home-renovation show, the Texas-based “Fixer Upper,” into a bespoke media empire of simple elegance and shiplap walls. Magnolia rolled out a lot of new programming with a farm-to-table vibe. When asked how their show managed to fit in with all that, Ryan joked: “We’re more like dandelions.” Much like how dandelions can grow through concrete, they thrive in the harshest of conditions (Maine winters) to make something that brings joy to those who see it. They also don’t spend a lot of time prettying up for the cameras. A typical “Maine Cabin Masters” season can be clocked through the infrequency of Chase’s haircuts and beard trims.

Chase, Ashley and Ryan are distinctly Maine. It’s hard to describe, but watching their show, or being around them, reminds me of getting a flat tire on my way to my own Maine high school. Multiple gruff, flanneled people halted their journeys to help. Maine kindness and Maine realness without airs: It radiates off the trio.

Chase, the central figure of the show, credits his connection to the work with his childhood experience with cabins. “Everybody has a spot. Whether it’s a family, a friend or just a place you go for a week in the summertime. Our family camp is up there right outside of Farmington. We grew up going there, and camps always need work,” he explains. “So I would be following around my grandfather and father, helping him work on his cabin, their camp and camps down the camp road.”

He and his colleagues had long been in the business of camp restorations when his oldest daughter, Maggie, learned through a friend’s mother that a production company was looking for a carpentry crew in Maine for a possible show. After checking it out, Chase applied, and soon enough, his gang found themselves making television.

T he Cabin Masters don’t decide which properties will be featured on the show; the network does. To make the cut, a camp has to have a realistic budget, a good story, a good location and a TV-worthy before-and-after amount of work to do. And the masters don’t always get it right.

In 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency alleged that the building company completed five renovations in residential properties built before 1978 without complying with federal lead requirements. Since then, the team has secured a Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule certification, has dedicated more showtime to diving into regulations, paid a $16,500 penalty and agreed to follow the guidelines in the future . “I’d say we try to be smarter, ... because we are in the public eye and people are looking to us for tips and advice,” Chase says.

Along with following regulations, securing permits can also be a problem. Doing so can take up to a year, depending on where the cabin is located.

If this sounds like a lot, it was to the masters when they first started filming as well. Chase wasn’t used to running on TV time or seeing the daylight hours and crew wages flash before his eyes. “When the film crew is here, we’re on their schedule. They set the call sheet: when things start happening and there’s just a lot of standing around waiting. When we were first starting out, all I could see were just dollar signs,” he said.

After nine seasons and countless restored camps, the Cabin Masters have realized that not every treasured camp can be saved. Maine is popular. Chase said he hates hearing stories of families selling their cabins — only to decide they want a space like that 15 years later. With rising home prices, especially in southern Maine and along the coast, he mourns the family sanctuaries that are sold, because it’s almost impossible to get back in the market.

“It’s harder to find,” he says. “It’s like once it’s gone, it’s so hard to get back.”

2024 Ford Ranger and Raptor add comfort, capability and performance to midsize pickups

SALT LAKE CITY – The Truck War ratchets up as Ford launches an advanced new version of its midsize Ranger pickup for 2024 — including a 400-horsepower Ranger Raptor, the first time the legendary desert-racing model has been offered in the U.S.

The 2024 Ford Ranger rides on an entirely new frame featuring high-strength steel and fully boxed rails for maximum performance and comfort.

The Ranger is one of Ford's core global vehicles. It builds the midsize pickup in five plants around the world:

• Wayne, Michigan
• Rayong, Thailand (two plants)
• Silverton, South Africa
• General Pacheco, Argentina

Sold in more than 180 countries, Rangers serve as everything from sport trucks to family vehicles and workhorses. All Rangers sold in the U.S. and Canada come from Wayne, Michigan, where they’re built alongside the Bronco SUV.

The 2024 model is new from the ground up. Key structural changes in addition to the frame include a 2-inch longer wheelbase, 2-inch wider track, rear shocks mounted outside the frame to improve ride and tuneability for different roads and uses.

The electrical architecture also is new, enabling over-the-air updates, 4G modem and Wi-Fi hot spot.

A  four-door crew cab and 5-foot bed are standard on the 2024 Ranger. Ford dropped the smaller extended cab model from the U.S. lineup due to slow sales.

The base model comes with rear-wheel drive and a 270-hp 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A 315-hp 2.7L twin-turbo V6 will be available this summer.

Prices start at $32,565 for a rear-drive 2.3L Ranger. Shift on the fly four-wheel drive adds around $3,500, depending on the model. A locking rear differential is available.

The Raptor gets a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 production 400 hp and 430 pound-feet of torque.

All Rangers come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

I spent a day driving a well-equipped 2.3L Ranger Lariat 4x4 in the hills and highways around Salt Lake City.

Fitted with comfortable seats, attractive and durable-seeming upholstery, my test vehicle stickered at $50,415. All prices exclude $1,595 destination charge.

I didn’t test a Raptor due to a case of flu that made jumping off sand dunes and testing its race-tuned suspension seem unwise. I look forward to taking a Raptor off-road, and possibly airborne, later this spring.

The Ranger competes with midsize pickups, including the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon Nissan  Frontier and perennial class top-selling Toyota Tacoma. Honda’s pleasant Ridgeline remains an outlier among midsize pickups, despite years of service and satisfied customers.

Ford emphasized increased comfort and capability in the 2024 Ranger. The stiff frame enabled a comfortable ride over a variety of surfaces.

The 2.3L engine provided plenty of power driving in the city, on highway and twisting mountain roads.

Comfortable, quiet cabin

The roomy five-passenger cabin was quiet, even at highway speeds on optional 18-inch all-terrain tires.

I found the steering well weighted and direct, with a good on-center feel at highway speed. The new lane-centering feature may have contributed to that. Adaptive cruise control also is new for the 2024, model, along with trailer backup assist, a feature that makes it easy for even novices to back trailers up precisely.

There are also 360-degree cameras for parking.

The seats are comfortable. A combination of 10- or 12-inch touch screen and traditional controls for volume and climate provide easy access to a wide range of features.

BYD sees NEV share reaching 50% in the next 3 months in China as EV price war heats up

After new energy vehicles (EVs and PHEVs) crossed 48.2% last week in China, BYD’s CEO Wang Chuanfu said at this rate, 50% NEV share could happen in the next three months.

“The penetration rate of NEVs crossed 48.2 percent last week, and if it continues at this rate, I estimate that the penetration could cross 50 percent in the next three months,” Wang explained at the China EV 100 Forum in Beijing over the weekend.

Just a month ago, BYD’s CEO said he could see China’s NEV reaching 50% by the end of the year, according to CnEVPost .

The penetration rate could be even higher over the next three months as NEVs dominate the market, according to Wang.

About half of BYD’s sales are all-electric, while the other half are PHEVs. Wang said China’s NEV makers must embrace the industry’s shift while advancing cleaner tech.

Last year, NEVs accounted for 35% of China’s auto sales. A jump to 45% would mean an extra two million NEV sales, according to Wang.

After dominating their domestic market, Chinese NEVs are now expanding overseas. Electric vehicles pushed China past Japan to become the global auto export leader. BYD’s first car transport ship docked in Germany last month, carrying 3,000 vehicles, as it’s “just getting started” in Europe.

Meanwhile, Wang warned the industry is entering a tough stretch, and automakers need to scale and grow their brand as quickly as possible.

After launching the Qin Plus Champion Edition (DM-i model) last year, priced below 100,000 yuan ($13,900) for the first time, BYD claimed it was “directly destroying the moat of joint venture vehicles.”

Now, the automaker has several fully electric models below or close to the 100,000 yuan mark.

A 50% NEV share within the next three months would be impressive. China’s NEV market already topped 48% share last week as buyers continue transitioning to cleaner alternatives.

BYD announced a “liberation battle” against gas-powered vehicles last month after cutting EV prices and introducing new low-cost models.

Its cheapest EV so far, the new Seagull , starts at $9,700 (69,800 yuan). The Seagull earned the nickname “Lamborghini mini,” as former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger led its design.

Although BYD is known as a low-cost EV maker, it’s expanding into new segments, including luxury and mid-size SUVs. BYD launched its Yangwang U9 electric supercar last month, starting at $233,000 (1,680,000 yuan).

It also has two new mid-size electric SUVs, the Sea Lion 07 and Song L, rolling out to compete with Tesla’s best-selling Model Y.

Although BYD and Tesla are often compared, BYD sees Tesla as an important partner and wants to work with them to continue gaining market share from ICE cars.

The sudden drop of a Boeing 787 that injured 50 people may have been caused by a flight attendant accidentally hitting a switch in the cockpit, report says

• A Boeing 787 suddenly dropped in midair on Monday, injuring 50 people.
• The Wall Street Journal said the pilot's seat hit the controls when a flight attendant hit a switch.
• Boeing then told airlines to check their 787 cockpits for loose covers on the switches.

Monday's Latam Airlines incident might have been caused by a flight attendant accidentally hitting a switch in the cockpit, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The report added that Boeing told airlines on Thursday to inspect the cockpit seats on 787 Dreamliners as a result.

The Latam Dreamliner was flying from Sydney to Auckland when it suddenly dropped. Paramedics treated 50 people , 12 of whom went to the hospital, the New Zealand Herald reported.

In a Monday statement, a Latam Airlines spokesperson told Business Insider there was "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement." One passenger told CNN that the Boeing 787 pilot said the plane's gauges "just kind of went blank on me."

The Journal's report suggests that it could have instead been a mishap in the cockpit, citing unnamed US industry officials who were briefed on preliminary evidence from the investigation.

While serving a meal, a flight attendant may have hit a switch on the pilot's seat, the officials told the Journal, turning on a feature that pushed the pilot and his seat toward the controls. They added that this would have pointed the plane's nose down.

The switch on the pilot's seat usually has a cover and isn't supposed to be used when somebody is in the seat, the Journal reported.

The newspaper reported that Boeing's memo told airlines to inspect the seats for loose covers on the switches and gave instructions on how to turn off the motors that move the seats forward.

The planemaker is also considering updating the flight-crew manual, the Journal reported.

A Boeing spokesperson said: "We defer to the investigating agencies for any information."

Latam Airlines told Business Insider that it "continues to work in coordination with the authorities in order to support the investigation" and that "it is not pertinent to comment on the speculation that has been circulated."
