If someone has not had a yacht broker before, what should they expect the yacht broker to do when helping them find a yacht?

In a word, everything. A yacht broker is a consultant, advisor, negotiator, administrator and connector. From the initial search through inspections, sea trials, surveys, negotiations, the transaction itself, registration and all other administrative elements, a good broker handles every element. Brokers will also liaise with third party specialists such as surveyors, financing agents, insurance underwriters and tax specialists, making sure that the buyer has access to the best advice and resources available. Are there guidelines to the commission brokers get for involvement in a sale of a yacht and who pays the commission?

The broker is always working for his client, so sometimes he/she represents the seller, sometimes the buyer. He/She is paid a percentage of the gross sale price. For a brokerage sale (ie a pre-owned yacht or boat), the seller pays the broker’s commission. For new yachts, it will be the shipyard. There are industry standards for commission structures. When does the broker get their commission?

When the yacht is sold and the title of ownership is exchanged. For boats over 80ft (24m), if you go directly to a yacht builder (for boats over 80ft) will you need a yacht broker? It is always advisable to speak with a yacht broker who will be able to offer professional advice on which yacht will suit your needs and budget. Most boat dealerships in Singapore are essentially boat/yacht brokers as well, the main difference is they represent a certain brand(s) and will have exclusive rights to sell that brand(s) here in Singapore. Normally along with this exclusive right will come the responsibility of purchasing a stock boat for Singapore which is used for events, promotion, and fast delivery. In addition, if a buyer wants to buy a new boat, the dealer will have access to a range of new boat features and technology that can motivate the boat buyer to customize their new boat with all the features and power they prefer, this is something brokers generally can’t do as they typically deal with used boats.

As a boat buyer, there are generally more benefits from buying a boat with a dealer rather than a broker, though this will largely depend on how big the dealership is, the most common benefits are warranty (with a new boat), after-sales support from the manufacture, ‘free cleaning and berthing’ and assurance that the dealer will stand by their brand in case of a dispute. Inside boat dealerships in Singapore, another consideration when buying from a boat dealer is that they may take your existing boat on as a trade while you upgrade to one of their brands or trade up to a bigger model. This trade-in option is a good ‘tell tail’ of how much the dealers have invested in the brand.

Brands that are represented in boat dealerships in Singapore by a dealer are normally production boats ranging from 20ft – 100ft, common brands with extensive dealership networks include Princess Yachts , Ferretti Yachts , Azimut Yachts , Sanlorenzo Yachts , Beneteau , Lagoon Catamarans , and Four Winns just to name a few. Large boats and superyacht builders don’t normally have a local dealer, they will rely on brokers finding a client that is interested in an almost completely bespoke superyacht.

Yacht shows play an important role for the dealers to push their brands out to new boat buyers, most dealers and brands would prepare their stock boats for the Singapore Yacht Show one year in advance and heavily rely on the leads of the show to move their stock or at least purchase a similar boat from their brand.

The experience was awesome!

The long tale of the yacht linked to a Russian oligarch and abandoned in the Caribbean for more than 2 years finally draws to a close

An undisclosed buyer picked up the Alfa Nero for $40 million last week.

The yacht was originally seized from a Russian oligarch in 2022.

The sale ended an ownership tug-of-war, which included ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

An undisclosed buyer has finally stepped up to the helm of the Alfa Nero superyacht, ending a two-year-long saga, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

That buyer agreed last week to pay $40 million, a huge discount to the $67.6 million that former Google CEO Eric Schmidt bid last year, a deal he eventually abandoned.

The Antigua and Barbuda government sold the superyacht, which houses an infinity pool that converts to a helipad or dancefloor.

The massively discounted price can be attributed to authorities' need "to get the boat sold," Richard Higgins, a broker who represented the buyer, told Bloomberg.

Higgins said the European buyer, whose identify was kept secret, intends to put the superyacht on the charter market.

The person "is not included in the sanctions list of any country or institution," Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda's ambassador to the US, told Bloomberg.

The 267-foot-vessel was seized by Antigua and Barbuda authorities after it was linked to Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev, who was accused by the US Treasury Department of having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Guryev is the founder of Phosagro, Europe's largest producer of phosphate fertilizers, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .

The Alfa Nero was among dozens of superyachts seized following global sanctions against Putin's closest associates, which led to billions of dollars in frozen assets.

The Alfa Nero's maiden owner was Guryev, who purchased the vessel for $120 million, according to the US Treasury and the Antigua and Barbuda government . The Russian billionaire had adamantly denied ownership.

After the vessel was seized in 2022, it remained docked in Antigua's Falmouth Harbour, which cost residents of the Caribbean nation $28,000 in weekly tax dollars for maintenance, which took as many as 44 crew members . The superyacht was then valued at $81 million.

In 2023, the Antigua and Barbuda government put the Alfa Nero up for auction, citing hazards due to a lack of maintenance.Eric Schmidt initially won the bidding, for $67.6 million , but eventually backed out after Guryev's daughter claimed ownership of the superyacht.

The most recent acquisition of the Alfa Nero finally ends its ownership limbo, during which it racked up millions of dollars in port fees under the custody of the Antigua and Barbuda authorities, Darwin Telemaque, the Alfa Nero's port manager, told Bloomberg.

Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Antigua and Barbuda taxpayers were footing a $28,000-a-week bill to maintain the Alfa Nero, including the salary of an Italian captain and $2,000-a-day in diesel to keep its air conditioning running. That's because if the AC is turned off, it could let mold spread throughout the vessel and ruin the hardwood interior or a Joan Miró painting onboard, per the WSJ.
