Taipan Catamaran Australian Championships done and won

Held off Portland Victoria, the Taipan Catamaran Association of Australia (TCAA) celebrated its 30th birthday in style, with an outstanding National Championships run by Portland Yacht Club.

Nineteen Cat Rigs, six Sloop Rigs and seven 5.7’s enjoyed magnificent conditions, with a range of wind speeds and swell conditions throughout the week.

Racing across all fleets was intense, with multiple lead and podium changes during the 12-race event. Off the water, there was a feast of social activities, with a focus on families.

In the Cat Rigged fleet, there were no less than five National champions and three runners-up in the field, making it the most hotly contested in recent years.

There were six different heat winners, and positions swapped on every leg of every race. The title came down to two contenders and wasn’t concluded until the last beat of the last race.

Leigh Hein from Portland Yacht Club (PYC) notched up his second National title from last year’s runner -up, Will Richards from Ballina. Luke Donovan, also from PYC, made the podium in third place, followed by Dave Parker and Ant Richards in fourth and fifth respectively.

New to the Cat Rigged fleet last year, the Master’s category was again in full swing, and was equally hotly contested. Lachie Cameron from McCrae Yacht Club came away with the new perpetual trophy, donated by Craig Harden at Sail trophies, with Wazza Morse second and Mark Colecliffe third.

In the Sloop Rigged fleet, it was fantastic to see the various crew combinations. There were husband/wife, father/son, father/daughter, and experienced/newcomer mixtures. There were four juniors crewing; Caitlin McMahon, Evelyn Floyd, Maxine Jopp and Lachlan Vise.

Racing was dominated by Brad Hein and newcomer Tim O’Toole from PYC, with nine bullets from 12 races. Runners-up were Rohan and Roellen Gillmore from Mt. Martha, sporting a beautiful brand new boat (less than a week old), with Evan Steele/Caitlin McMahon from SA rounding out the top three.

One of the highlights was watching the skippers’ trade places with their crews on the return trip to the port. Their smiles said it all.

There’s nothing like watching 5.7’s screaming downwind with kites flying. This year seven of them meant the competition was wide open. After each day’s racing, the chase for the title was either tied, or there was a point in it.

With scores level and a big breeze on heading into the last day, it was McCrae’s John Newman/Peter Bartlett taking the win by one point, from Kim Luitjes/ Ben Clark from Lake Cullulleraine. Kim’s son Tom came in third crewing for Wayne Hancock from SA.

Another new addition this year was a State of Origin clash in the 4.9 cats and the 5.7 fleets. Using a modified scoring system to incorporate the highest and lowest placings for the event, it was the NSW crew taking out the 4.9 Cats, with the Vic’s romping away with the win in the 5.7’s.

On the social side, this year’s event was outstanding. As it was the TCAA’s 30th birthday, the week started with a sit down Q & A with the designers of the 4.9; Jim Boyer and Greg Goodall. It was fascinating listening to how the boat came about and some wonderful stories of years gone by.

There were also some family-friendly activities throughout the week, including a fantastic trip to Bridgewater Beach on New Year’s Day; the Doherty Plumbing Laser Challenge; Tackers 1, 2 & 3 for the kids, as well as other fun activities throughout.

To add to the excitement, this year, the new 4.9 was unveiled straight from the Concept Fibres factory. It has been a labour of love for Rohan and Roellen Gillmore to get this ‘baby’ onto the water and it certainly looked amazing.

Even fresh out of the box, the 4.9 performed extremely well, placing second overall. Rohan, the team at Concept Fibres, Richard Nicholson and Jim Boyer have put an incredible amount of work to get this off the ground, so if you’re interested in purchasing your own, please contact Rohan direct at Concept Fibres on 0412 977 371.

As if this wasn’t enough, a new development sail aimed at attracting youth and female skippers to the class was also unveiled.

Developed with Glenn Ashby and North Sails, the design brief was to create a smaller mainsail, but using the same mast and boom set up. It came out looking a treat with lots of discussion in the boat park.

The sail will be available for use and is currently kept in Melbourne. If you are interested, please contact Ant Richards on 0409 231 980. It will be shared around, but we are looking to purchase a number of sails through the Association to allow all states access. Exciting times ahead.

Thanks to our sponsors: Portland EyeCare, Concept Fibres, Goodall Design Australia, Treloar Roses, DP Marine, Porthaul, Musto and Glenelg Shire.

All you need to know about sailing A Class Catamarans in Australia

taipan catamaran association

A Class Sailing

The A Class Catamaran is the fastest single handed small catamaran in the world. This highly responsive lightweight boat is a joy to sail. The powerful rig means that even the heaviest sailors are on the trapeze upwind in 6 knots of breeze and flying a hull downwind (wild thing). The top sailors in the class have now mastered the art of trapezing downwind, making the boat even faster and more exciting. The boat is very easy for an experienced sailor to sail, but very difficult to sail really fast.

The A Class is a boat built specifically for racing and has very strong fleets both in Australian and overseas. The National Championship in 2011 had a highly competitive fleet of 73 boats, the largest catamaran fleet in Australia. State Championships in Qld, Vic and NSW all had over 30 competitors. Australians consistently perform well at the world championships, in 2010 taking 5 of the top 10 places, including the top 3.

The high quality of racing in the A Class often surprises those new to the class. Regular competitors include Olympic medalists and world champions in several other classes. At recent Australian National Championships, several professional sailors from Americas Cup teams have been shocked to find themselves mid-fleet, although others like Dean Barker and James Spithill have shown their ability to perform at the top of any fleet.

The A Class catamaran is a development class with very simple rules defining the boat. The key rules are:

Full rules are available on the international site.

Several competitive designs of A-Class are commercially available, although which boat is the fastest changes as these products are constantly improved. 50 years of development have produced a very refined boat, so changes are typically incremental and boats usually remain competitive for several years.

If you are interested in a new boat, a number of manufacturers can be found under the Builders/Suppliers list on the right of page.. For secondhand boats and parts our members use the classifieds on this site .

One strong advantage of the development nature of the class is that it allows customization of a boat to suit a specific sailor. For example the weight of a sailor is much less critical on an A Class than any one design class. A heavier sailor will choose a more powerful sail and mast combination than a lighter sailor and a hull shape with more buoyancy. This usually ensures that sailing skill is the most important factor in winning races. It is common to see the top competitors using different hull shapes, mast manufacturers and sailmakers.

Come and give A Class sailing a try. There are a number of clubs where A Classes are sailed regularly and the sailors at these clubs will be happy to talk to you about getting started. Please contact your state representative ( details on our contacts page ) to find out which clubs are active in your area.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

taipan catamaran association

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

The Appaloosa Horse Club

The Appalossa Horse Club (ApHC) is an international breed registry located in town called Moscow, in Idaho, USA. The club is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Appaloosa breed. Among all the Appaloosa horse registries, the ApHC is by far the largest one.

taipan catamaran association

Today, Appaloosa organizations affiliated with ApHC exist in many countries.

Registration

According to ApHC rules, the Appaloosa is “ a breed defined by ApHC bloodline requirements and preferred characteristics, including coat pattern ”.

To register a horse as Appaloosa with the ApHC, the horse must have two registered Appaloosa parents, or one registered Appaloosa parent + one parent that is registered in one of the other approved breed registries. These approved breed registries are limited to Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and Arabian Horses.

Exception: If a gelding or spayed mare with unknown pedigree is Appaloosa colored, the owner of the horse can apply to have it registered with the ApHC under the Hardship Registration clause.

Additional rules

  • A horse that meets the bloodline requirements without displaying the recognized color pattern can still register with the ApHC. It will be registered as a non-characteristic Appaloosa. Non-characteristic Appaloosas can only be shown at ApHC events if a DNA test has proven that it has the required parentage, and the owner pays an extra fee to enter the horse into the ApHC Performance Permit Program (PPP).
  • The ApHC size requirement for a mature Appaloosa is at least 14 hands unshod. Sufficiently young horses can be registered even if they are smaller than this (even though it is impossible to know if they will fulfill the requirement as they mature).
  • A horse with excessive white markings not associated with the Appaloosa pattern (e.g. the markings associated with a pinto horse) can only be registered if DNA testing proves that both parents are ApHC registered.

ApHC horse shows

Every year, the ApHC holds three nationally recognized horse shows:

  • The National Appaloosa Show
  • The World Championship Appaloosa Show
  • The Youth World Championship Appaloosa Show

Appaloosa racing

Horses that perform well in Appaloosa races can earn various awards from the ApHC, such as regional ApHC awards and year-end awards. There is also the Racing Register of Merit.

The ApHC records world records and track records for Appaloosa racehorses.

The Appaloosa Competitive All-breed Activities Program (ACAAP)

The Appaloosa Competitive All-breed Activities Program (ACAAP) was created to make it possible for the ApHC to recognize achievements in all-breed competitions where Appaloosas partake.

The National Color Breeding Racing Council

Since 1994, the National Color Breeding Racing Council has promoted Appaloosa racing and Paint racing as a joint venture.

The Appaloosa Breeders’ Trust

taipan catamaran association

The use of Furosemide and Acetazolamide

Since 2007, the ApHC allows Appaloosas to show even if they are being treated with the drugs furosemide and acetazolamide.

Furosemide (trade name: Lasix) is used to prevent bleeding in horses that are inclined to bleed from the nose when carrying out strenuous work, e.g. during a race.

Acetazolamide is used to prevent seizures in horses who suffer from a genetic condition known as Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP). According to ApHC rules, only a horse tested positive for HYPP is allowed to show while being treated with acetazolamide.

Permitting these two drugs are controversial, since they can be used as drug maskers and make it more difficult to detect the presence of other drugs in the horse. Both the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), which governs international and Olympic equestrian competitions, ban the use of furosemide.

The American Appaloosa Association

In 1983, The American Appaloosa Association was formed as a reaction against a rule change that made it possible for certain plain-colored horses to be included in the ApHC registry. The American Appaloosa Association is based in Missouri.
