Duel in the dark as three-boat race for Sydney to Hobart win looms on Weds morning

Black Jack leads the Sydney to Hobart.

There’s a tight tussle for line honours in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race as Black Jack, LawConnect and SHK Scallywag headed toward a possible “neck and neck” finish on the River Derwent.

Across Tuesday SHK Scallywag had closed the gap in third place as further retirements cut the original fleet of 88 yachts to 52, with harsh conditions forcing withdrawals due to damage or minor crew injuries - most coming on the first day.

The three super maxis were vying for the top spot heading down Tasmania’s east coast with the possibility of the duel continuing right up to Hobart.

On Tuesday morning, Black Jack had regained a six nautical mile lead on LawConnect.

“They are neck and neck at the moment,” Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Commodore Noel Cornish told media in Hobart.

Light winds for most of Tuesday then saw the leaders slow down, often being within sight of each other. Some of the race stragglers may not finish until January 4.

A Wednesday morning finish, likely before sunset, was expected.

“We are looking forward to a good day, and to where we will end up this afternoon and evening,” said Black Jack navigator Alex Nolan.

“Everyone is very well on board. Everyone is very happy. We are pushing it very hard.” Weather is critical in the 628-nautical-mile (1,200-km) race down Australia’s east coast to Hobart, one of the world’s most challenging ocean events.

Six men died, five boats sank, and 55 sailors were rescued during the 1998 event when a deep depression exploded over the fleet in the Bass Strait.

But this year, organisers also faced the trials of a global pandemic, which already nixed last year’s edition -- cancelling the event for the first time since it began in 1945.

Before the start, four yachts were forced to retire, leaving 88 entrants at the starting line, including 17 two-handed crafts, which are allowed to take part for the first time.

It was a sharp reduction from the 157 boats that set out in 2019. Though the first yacht to reach the finishing line grabs most public attention, the main prize for sailors is regarded as the handicap honours, which take account of the size of the yachts.

Sydney to Hobart yacht race — how to watch and what to look for

Large sailboat with other watercraft in pursuit as seen from overhead.

Since its beginning in 1945, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race has become one of the pinnacles for sailing competitors, with the event being a test of skill, teamwork, nautical engineering and tactics — with weather providing the wild card.

If you know what to look for, the race can be an enjoyable experience.

Here are some tips for getting the best out of it.

The fleet leaves Sydney Harbour following the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

When does it start?

About 111 boats ranging from the supermaxis (longer than 20 metres) to smaller 30-footers (9 metres) will be ready to go at 1pm AEDT Boxing Day on Sydney Harbour.

The start is arguably one of the greatest spectacles in modern sport.

Once the starting cannon is fired, all teams will be gunning for The Heads and into the open water of the South Pacific, with competitors surrounded by all manner of craft.

Watch as boats come perilously close to the supermaxis.

The fleet then begins to make its way down the east coast of Australia to Hobart, a distance of approximately 630 nautical miles (1,166 kilometres).

What are they racing for?

It isn't money. Yes, you read that correctly — there is no prize money for the winners.

Instead, they race for trophies in a number of categories , the main events for casual observers being Line Honours and Overall.

The first yacht across the line wins the JH Illingworth Trophy, but the overall winner on handicap wins the Tattersalls Cup.

The overall victory is considered the major prize for sailors and a testament to skill and tactics.

Most of the time, handicap honours are won by a smaller, slower boat, which outdoes its larger opposition when time is adjusted for size and other factors.

The reigning overall winner is Ichi Ban. It finished in 4 days, 10 hours, and 17 minutes.

This was after a protest against Celestial was upheld. Celestial was handed a 40-minute time penalty for not manning their radio for a 90-minute period, during which officials were trying to contact the team.

The reigning line honours winner is Black Jack, winning in two days, 12 hours, and 37 minutes in 2021.

How can I watch it?

Race sponsor Rolex says the race can be watched on the Seven Network.

7Mate will broadcast the start of the race live around Australia. Their coverage starts at 12:30pm (AEDT).

ABC TV will also provide updates throughout the event.

For those who can't watch the live broadcast of the start of the race on their TV, Seven will have a stream of the race.

You can also watch vision from the event on the Sydney to Hobart yacht race website .

1955 Sydney to Hobart race start

If you are in Sydney and on the water, spectators who wish to watch the start but not follow the fleet are advised to stick to the "western side of the harbour".

Good vantage points for spectator boats include "Taylors Bay, Chowder Bay, Obelisk Bay and North Head on the west and Rose Bay, Watsons Bay, Camp Cove and South Head to the east".

According to organisers, the harbour will be "very crowded and traffic can be chaotic, so stay alert, follow the advice of race officials and remember to keep well clear of the exclusion zone between 12pm and 2pm".

How can I follow the boats online?

You can follow the race on an online tracker , which shows the positions of yachts as they move south.

The locations of yachts are transmitted by a GPS device on each vessel.

As the race goes on, you can see the course charted by crews — unless of course the boat's GPS device gets switched off, rendering it invisible to spectators and other competitors — an accusation that was levelled at Wild Oats XI in 2018 by the owner of Black Jack.

Sydney to Hobart yacht race tracker.

What should I look out for?

The weather forecast is for northerly winds in the harbour for Monday's start, which will favour the bigger boats. They will push hard to get out of the harbour.

Barring disaster, the Line Honours winner will almost certainly be one of the four super maxis.

LawConnect (formerly Perpetual LOYAL, formerly Investec LOYAL, formerly InfoTrack) set a new record in 2016 when it crossed the line in one day, 13 hours, 31 minutes and 12 seconds, a time since bettered by Comanche the next year.

Black Jack (Formerly Alfa Romeo II) has a strong Sydney to Hobart history and is the reigning Line Honours champion. It's had a strong 2022 already, taking line, record, and overall wins in the Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Harbour race. Black Jack has a strong rivalry with Wild Oats XI as it was the first boat to break Wild Oats' race record in 2009.

Comanche takes the lead in the Sydney to Hobart on day one

Andoo Comanche is the hot favourite for line honours this year. It has already defeated Black Jack in the Sydney to Gold Coast race this year and has won the inaugural Tollgate Islands race. It beat Wild Oats for line honours in 2017, setting a race record in the process, but only after a controversial protest .

Hamilton Island Wild Oats XI is the most famous boat in the race but has not participated since 2019 due to COVID. Veteran skipper Mark Richards will once again be at the helm and will be hoping to improve on the 3rd place finish in 2019.

The favourites for the handicap trophy are Alive, URM Group, Moneypenny and Stefan Racing, with last year's winner, Ichi Ban, not participating.

This year there is also a number of crews made up of father-daughter or father-son teams.

Yacht at sea.

The yacht race is taken seriously for good reason — people have died when the weather has turned bad.

In 1998, six sailors died, five yachts sank, more than 60 yachts retired and 55 sailors had to be rescued by helicopter.

In 2015, a squall hit the fleet off the News South Wales coast, ending the race for 29 competitors.

A large yacht sails at night.

When does the race finish?

The lines honours winner is likely to come in around 48 hours after the start, but this is very much dependent on the weather —  especially in the 22.2-kilometre final stretch up the Derwent River.

This is when the wind can drop away and it becomes an agonisingly slow crawl , with every trick in the book pulled out to speed the progress up the glassy waterway.

In 2021, Black Jack crossed the line at 1:37am on December 29, followed by LawConnect at 4:11am and SHK Scallywag about 20 minutes after that.

In 2019, Comanche came in at a more reasonable time of 7:30am on December 28, with InfoTrack about 45 minutes later.

Stadium at Regatta Point

Stadium at Regatta Point – design description

What is the purpose of a new stadium in tasmania.

As Australian football is enormously popular in Tasmania, since the Victorian Football League (VFL) became a national competition (AFL) in 1990 there have been discussions about establishing a team in Tasmania that would participate in the league. Over the years, however, this goal has not been accomplished and the only tangible presence of the league on the island is the occasional games played by teams based in Melbourne, notably Hawthorn, making a guest appearance at York Park in Launceston, and North Melbourne, visiting Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Another opportunity for establishing an AFL team in Tasmania is the 2021 proposal, due to be voted on in August 2022.

Why is a new stadium needed in Hobart?

Back in 2019, a report emerged stating that neither of the island's two largest stadiums, either Bellerive Oval in the state capital, Hobart, or York Park in Launceston (Tasmania's second largest city, located in the northern part of the island and also aspiring to host an AFL team), which can each hold approx. 20,000 spectators each, are not a serious bid to become a major venue for a potential AFL team, and the desirable solution, which is one of the key conditions for a Tasmania team to join as the league's 19th team, is the construction of a new, larger and more modern stadium.

What should the new stadium in Hobart look like?

On 1 March 2022, Tasmania's premier Peter Gutwein unveiled a plan for a new arena in Hobart. The concept, prepared by Philp Lighton Architects, calls for a facility capable of holding 27,000 spectators. The stands of the arena would be fully covered, and movable parts of the roof would allow it to be fully enclosed (it would be the second stadium with retractable roof in the AFL league, after Docklands Stadium in Melbourne). The lower ring of oval stands is to be fitted with additional retractable rows, allowing for a 'rectangular' configuration for rugby or football matches.

Where will the new stadium in Hobart be built?

The venue is to be built on the banks of the River Derwent, on a man-made wharf, which would be created near the regatta grandstand and the obelisk of "The Cenotaph", not far from the city center. The second phase would also see an indoor arena built alongside the stadium. Interestingly, in 2019 Don Gallagher, an architect and co-owner of a local brewery, presented a concept to build an arena on almost the same site (right next to the obelisk, without having to pave an additional area on the waterfront), but it did not meet with the approval of the state authorities at the time.

What is the cost of building a new stadium in Hobart?

The cost of building the stadium is estimated at AU$750 million, which seems quite a large sum for a 27,000-seat venue, although it must be taken into account that the arena will be built on an artificially created wharf and will be equipped with a retractable roof. Both local and federal authorities, as well as private entities, are to be involved in financing the arena. It is assumed that the planning, design of the stadium and obtaining the necessary permits will take approximately two years. The venue is due to be completed in 2027.

What does the construction of a new stadium in Hobart depend on?

The beginning of the procedures for the construction of the stadium is dependent on a decision by the AFL league authorities to accept the 19th Tasmanian team into its structures as of 2028. The decision is expected to be made in August 2022, and following a positive opinion from the league's committee, a vote is expected to take place in which a minimum of 7 of the 18 clubs must agree to the expansion. The stadium in Hobart is not expected to be the only one to host the new team; York Park in Launceston is also expected to be ready to welcome them, with AU$200 million planned for upgrades.

SUNFLOWER BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE TO THE NEW BROOMRAPE RACE IN THE KRASNODAR REGION OF RUSSIA / MEJORAMIENTO DEL GIRASOL POR LA RESISTENCIA A UNA NUEVA RAZA DE JOPO EN LA REGIÓN DE KRASNODAR, RUSIA / SÉLECTION DE TOURNESOL POUR LA RÉSISTANCE À LA NOUVELLE RACE d'Orobanche DANS LA RÉGION DE KRASNODAR, RUSSIE

Broomrape ( Orobanche cumana Wallr.) is a parasitic plant, feeding on sunflower roots. In recent years some new, more aggressive broomrape races have been found in different parts of the world (Spain, Turkey, Romania, etc. ). Soon afterwards they occurred in Russia and we started a special breeding program to control the parasites. A line (VK 623) resistant to race F was previously found among the lines from the VNIIMK breeding program. Several new prospective sunflower inbred lines with resistance to both broomrape races, E and F, were developed in a short time. Now they are being converted to cmslines. However, the recessive character of their resistance creates some difficulties in commercial sunflower hybrid breeding, so, to obtain new donors of resistance, the cultivated sunflower was crossed with H. tuberosus (used as pollinator).
