First look: Inside 62m CRN superyacht Rio
Italian shipyard CRN , a brand of Ferretti Group, has unveiled the first images of its 62 metre superyacht Rio ahead of her premiere appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show 2022.
Delivered in May , Rio was designed by CRN in partnership with Omega Architects and is the first collaboration between the pair since the 73 metre Yalla in 2014.
The yacht was built under the management of TWW Yachts and is a full-custom build with a steel hull, aluminium superstructure and "supremely sporty" exterior that’s defined by a near-vertical bow, gentle arches in the superstructure and long lines of glazing.
Pulina Exclusive Interiors has helmed the yacht’s interior styling. Natural light is a key design point on board, and the Italian design studio ensured a bright and airy ambience with far-ranging views available across her decks.
This is particularly notable in the “luminious” main saloon, which the yard has described as a "single eye-catching space encapsulating all the elements of style that define the yacht's design."
The yacht follows a contemporary, yet playful theme that appeals to all generations. The designers haven’t shied away from vibrant colours and tropical patterns, fulfilling the owner’s request for “bright, colourful spaces and a happy atmosphere for the younger family members to enjoy”.
A high level of detail is evident across the yacht's spaces, with hand-painted panels in the owner’s lobby, custom artworks in the saloon and a bar made from a slab of highly sought-after Azul Macauba marble that welcomes guests as they step in from the exterior decks.
Elsewhere, the design team has used a mix of white lacquered oak, delicate cotton wallpaper and warm Crema d’Orcia limestone to add character to the contrast. In the central lobby, a staircase made of bleached pickled oak and ice-white leather takes pride of place.
Pops of seafoam green and fuschia pink make an appearance on board Rio , but crisp blues and sharp navy maintain an air of sophistication throughout.
Alongside the “palatial” main saloon, guests will find a bespoke round drum table that seats up to eight and an American bar that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Accommodation is for up to 12 guests across one owner’s suite and five guest cabins. These are comprised of two full-beam VIPs – one on the main deck forward, the other on the lower deck - and three suites on the lower deck. There are also nine cabins for the 15 crew.
The owner’s suite has been conceived as a “haven of privacy”, which offers 180-degree views and private amenities including a study area with a desk that can be rotated 90 degrees. The suite also benefits from a freestanding bathtub that allows the vistas to be soaked up from the comfort of a bath.
At the bow, an open-air lounge, spanning 115 square metres, is directly accessed from the master cabin. Here, the owner or principal charterer can make full use of a recessed dip pool during the day, or turn it into a dancefloor by nightfall.
One of the yacht’s clever design twists is the mooring area below the owner’s deck, which has been created so that crew completely avoid the owner’s private spaces when they require access.
Tender storage is located in the foredeck, where there is space for two jet skis, a collection of toys and an 8-metre 8-metre Pascoe Beachlander tender. A second tender of almost 5 metres is on hand for the rescue, and there is also a 14 - meter SACS Rebel 47 tender chase boat in her arsenal.
In terms of wellness, Rio plays host to a Hamman, shower and fully-equipped gym. Adjoining this area is a multi-purpose waterfront lounge area with a TV that doubles as a whiteboard for games and other entertainment.
The yacht has a top speed of 15 knots and cruises at 12 knots, powered by her twin Caterpillar engines. The yacht is IMO Tier III-certified1, assuring drastic reductions of 70% in harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the engine exhaust, according to the yard.
Four fully custom yachts are currently under construction at the CRN shipyard: the 72 metre CRN 139 , 60 metre CRN 141 , 52 67 metre CRN 143, and the recently launched 52 metre superyacht Ciao .

BIG BRANDS. RIO YACHTS: LOVE FROM DOLCE VITA TIMES TO FUTURE
How may reasons are behind the birth of an enterprise ? The word itself is open to a dual interpretation. On one hand, it embodies hard heroic implications; on the other one, it can simply refer to the creation and deployment of a product.
This is why, coming back to the question above, reasons can be decidedly disparate: pride, ambition, financial interests and calculations, innate skills… However, when love is the real driving force of enterprise , it often results into extraordinary stories like the one we’re going to tell you today.
Rio Yachts was established in 1961 . Those were the times of the Italian Dolce Vita , when all dreams seemed to be possible and economic boom was ready to come true. It was in this background that an Italian entrepreneur, Luigi Scarani , and his wife, Anna Maria Ziliani – a teacher who gave up her career to follow her husband – laid the foundations for a story which is going on still today. To understand what this company means today and which philosophy it follows to build its boats , this story needs to be told. With no rhetorical artifices but focusing on the main ingredient that has allowed it to grow over the last 50 years: love.
Luigi Scarani is a dreamer, a child of his times, a person who always desires to make his dreams come true .
The first name of the company was “Avionautica Rio ” since, especially after Luigi’s brother, Carlo , joined the business, it devoted itself to glider manufacturing. One of the first creations was the popular M100S that the enthusiasts of this sector certainly remember. With the same severe technique-oriented approach, the company built its first beautiful luxury mahogany motorboats with Chris Craft and Rolls Royce engines along with striking names such as Colorado, Panarà, Bonito and Espera (and Rio, of course), all inspired by lakes or South-American realities.
Giving up her teacher career to stand by her husband, Anna Scarani decided to offer her considerable contribution and became the public relation manager of the company. Since then, she and her family adopted a very particular working approach. Because the Scarani were a couple able to establish personal and, sometimes, even friendly relationships with their customers . Purchasing a Rio Yachts boat meant to join both a family and a network of relationships where the boat was the final fruit of a series of encounters and discussions where th customer’s needs were identifies even through personal stories. Anna was always there to set the pace as well as the modalities of the relations with the outside world, press, markets: in a word, everyone.
During the years of the Italian economic boom, the shipyard built the iconic Rio 310, an ABS “ boat for anyone “ which quickly became the marine counterpart of the Fiat 600 with over 50,000 units sold. On the wave of growth, the company expanded internationally by establishing the first contacts with the French, Spanish and South-American markets.
The shipyard developed its “work vessel” division supplying Italian armed forces with many patrol models.
Between the 80’s and the 90’s , increasingly larger models made their first appearance on the market and launched innovative technologies and design, always in the respect of the traditional leitmotiv : with Luigi, the dreamer, planning future and Anna devoted to propose it to the world.
Some years ago, Luigi left us , even though such a personality cannot fail to leave permanent traces on its path, and Anna currently spends most of her time with her grandchildren.
However, nothing has changed in Rio Yachts . Luigi and Anna’s son, Piergiorgio , took over the helm of the company keeping the style invented by his parents absolutely unchanged. Meanwhile, of course, markets have continued to develop and expand. And Rio Yachts is growing with them, especially in the States , where its boats have become the symbol of Italian Style . The shipyard indeed builds extremely elegant boats featuring sober luxury design and an incomparable customization level.
It’s precisely the US market that highlights the successful Rio Yachts customer focus. As Piergiorgio Scarani witnesses to us, the Americans are pragmatic and use their boats, even the largest ones, with no crew throughout the year. The shipyard therefore designs every detail of the boat with the customer himself, such as the usability of systems, interior design and arrangement, the type of optional equipment the customer already chooses during the planning phase.
Essences and furniture often come after the owner has created his boat according to his personal needs .
Furthermore, continuous use implies the need for efficient fast post-sale assistance and services and that is what Rio Yachts is organizing in its new sale points. The same boat sold in the European, American, Brazilian or Chinese market will be substantially a completely different boat since owners have different culture and needs.
Customer focus and relationship along with the mutual growth involving the shipyard and its clients have always been the key elements of another important phenomenon Rio Yachts knows very well: customer retention.
Those who are lucky enough to own a boat usually don’t buy just a single boat in their life. As their career, family and needs change, their boat, too, can change.
Rio Yachts has managed to go along generations of boat owners who have decided to renovate their relationship with the shipyard systematically.
2017 is the present and it will see the launch of two important novelties: the Granturismo 60S , designed following the request of a prestigious American customer, and the Spider 40 , an open with racing performances and breath-taking lines that, needless to say, wants to ” meet our customers’ request – Piergiorgio Scarani explains – for a fast, simple-to-use boat where to have fun with family and friends”.
Meanwhile, the future plans of Rio Yachts include the manufacturing of larger boats and a new Fly series.
Thanks, quite great article.

Rio Yachts: Rich History of the Italian Classic
From gliders to the prestigious boats made in wood, all plastic heat-formed boats, to modern cruisers in fibreglass – the story of a business, that in fifty years of existence, has created schooling of Italian Style world-wide
In 1961, Luigi Scarani – a lover of fine boats – decided he and his wife would spend their honeymoon in the French Riviera. When they came back, after spending much more time studying yachts and marinas , than enjoying France, the Scaranis made a decision: their passion would no longer be just a hobby.
They founded a shipyard and named it Aeronautica Rio, as they originally planned to produce both boats and gliders. Still, the yard concentrated primarily on speedboats – made from the same wood as gliders, mahogany – and soon developed their iconic models Colorado, Espera, Parana and Bonito (all names were inspired by Mr. Scarani’s other passion; South America). This golden era ended in 1965, with the fabulous Rolls Rio wooden speedboat powered by the same Rolls-Royce L410 V8 engine that powered the legendary Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.

As the 1960s ended, Scarani decided to follow the trend – the yard partnered with AINC and ENI to start building boats in plastic, ending the era of wooden boats. Gliders became a thing of the past as well, and the yard dropped the Aeronautica part of their name. Rio first focused on smaller boats; day cruiser ideal for fishing trips, powered by outboard engines. Although not as glamorous as their wooden predecessors, those boats were a huge hit, especially the Rio 310, sold in 50.000 units.
Around the same time, Rio, this time partnered with Italian scooter maker Piaggio, made the first European jet-powered boats. Toward the end of the 1970s the yard began building larger plastic boats: especially popular were models Rio 11.50 and Rio 14.20, luxury fly bridge cruisers of significant size for the era. In the 1980s the yard expanded their portfolio with open cockpit cruisers, the most popular boat type of the decade, opened 440 dealerships and production plants in Spain and France and started their annual dealers’ meet-ups.
In the 1980s, one of their models, the Rio 400 Goal, was made in Croatia , on the island of Vis . In 1986 Rio debuted their innovative model Rio 12.90, with a cockpit closed by a movable roof – the sunroof, as it was called back then. That model later became the basis for the yard’s largest model, the 16.90.
In the 1980s Rio became one of the main suppliers of Italian police boats, and to this day they have delivered more than 200 boats to the carabinieri. In the 1990s, Rio began producing closed cockpit fishermen, which turned out to be a real hit on the domestic market, but the most popular of all was the 13-meter long open-cockpit Rio 1300 Cruiser.
In the 21st century, mid-2000s Piergorgio Scarani took over from his father and almost immediately changed the name of the yard to Rio Yachts. Under the new motto ‘Navigare alto’ (Sailing with class), Rio Yachts entered the luxury segment of the market. New series ART (open cockpit), AIR (hard top) and BLU (center console cruisers) were all based on that new philosophy.
In 2011 Rio Yachts celebrated their first fifty years with new versions of their classics Colorado, Espera and Parana, as well as brand new models Colorado 54 (16-meter hardtop) and Espera 34 (center console sport cruiser).
With their new models, equally fresh and innovative now as their namesakes were fifty years ago, are evidence that Rio Yachts is still powered by the same passion as when it was founded and equally dedicated to excellence in design and building techniques.

Daytona 50 En
“It's not about having ideas. It's about making them happen. ” - Scott Belsky -
Freedom and emotion.
In the year of its 60th anniversary, RIO YACHTS, historic Italian excellence, presents a new yacht synonymous with freedom and luxury: DAYTONA 50.
The DAYTONA range, which started in September 2020 with DAYTONA 34, a hugely successful model that after just a few months from being presented at Genoa’s Boat Show sold the entire production of the season, meets the new demand for practical and sporty open boats, suitable for short-distance cruising, with preference for space above rather than below deck and dynamic and fun performances.
DAYTONA 50, RIO YACHTS’ latest interpretation of this trend, is the work of one of Italy’s most talented designers, Marino Alfani, who also curated the concept, design, and interior, and even collaborated with the boatyard technical department on engineering aspects.
INNOVATION
Its main characteristics include walk around deck and central console, maximum space on board thanks to a boundless cockpit, total safety, and ease of movement above deck: a boat designed to socialise, enjoy, and relax.
A 15-metre yacht that offers a brilliant and fun performance, able to reach a maximum speed of over 40 knots, with the option of either 3 outboard or 2 inboard Diesel engines.
The lines are clean and symmetrical. The wraparound wind shield offers perfect visibility. The sleek bow reflects the strong personality of the design.
The spacious cockpit has a generous stern sun deck under which there is space for a tender. The bathing platform, spacious even on the version with the outboard engines, can be fitted with a tenderlift and two amazing large terraces can be opened both on the right and on the left, adding substantial space to the already impressive cockpit and providing a unique connection with the water. The table in the cockpit can easily accommodate six people and is completely concealable. Midship, a spacious open-air galley separates the cockpit from the highly technological, functional, and practical helm station, covered by a convenient, sporty, and light Bimini with just two supports (instead of the usual four featured by the competition), yet extremely stable, which offers generous coverage. The addition of an electric cover from the Bimini and two shades at the bow and the stern offer plenty of options to manage sun and shade as required.
The walkway to the bow is wide, practical, and safe. A two-seat sofa is just a few strides away, opposite the sun lounger on the deckhouse.
The interior is open space, bright and finished with great attention to details. If needed, when guests are on board, the cabins can be divided thanks to a mobile partition, creating privacy and exclusive comfort. The materials, which can be personalised by the owner, are the expression of the highest level of quality that only Made in Italy can provide.
All you have to do is... get on board!
