Ship Upgrading Request to Update

Ships are essential if you want to head out to the great ocean .

The best of these ships available are called the Epheria Carracks .

This guide will show you what you need to upgrade to an Epheria Carrack .

You will need to pick a Sailboat or a Frigate early on as it will give you different options of Epheria Carracks you can ultimately upgrade your ship to .

The basic start er ship for most players is the Bartali Sailboat, however, you can opt to purchase a Sailboat or Frigate registration from the Central Market to skip this step.

2. Bartali Sailboat

▲ Bartali Sailboat

The Bartali Sailboat is the most basic of the large ships you can get. It can be purchased from Proix, the owner of the Dancing Marlin Tavern, for 10,000,000 Silver .   You could also go through the questline , that begins from the “Vigorous Velia” quest , with a Lv. 50 or higher character to get a Bartali Sailboat as a quest reward.

( The actual quest that gives the ship as a reward is called “Jarette's Support .”)

As mentioned before, you can begin with a Bartali Sailboat and upgrade it all the way up to an Epheria Sailboat or Frigate. However, you could also purchase the ship licenses of Epheria Sailboats and Frigates from the Central Market to skip this part of the process.

3. Epheria Sailboat / Frigate

▲ Left ) Sailboat , Right ) Frigate

The Epheria Sailboat and Frigate are on the second stage of the carrack upgrade path .

As these two ships differ in which type of carracks they can upgrade to, it is an important decision to make.   Sailboats allows you to eventually make the “ Balance” carrack or the “Advance” carrack. The Balance carrack has stats evenly distributed while the Advance carrack is ideal for bartering as it can carry more weight .

Frigates on the other hand allows you to make the “Valor” carrack or the “Volante” carrack. The Valor carrack is great for sea monster hunting and navy combat while the Volante carrack is the fastest of all the carracks .

You could make your own Epheria Sailboat or Frigate, however, it would save you a lot of time to simply purchase one from the Central Market .

▲ Ship Licenses can be purchased from the Central Market

If you would like to make your own, follow the steps shown below.

■ How to Upgrade

Register the ship you wish to upgrade at a wharf via the Wharf Manager. Then use the “Upgrade” menu and add all the materials required to upgrade the ship .

However , you cannot upgrade your ship under the following circumstances :

- A piece of equipment is not at max durability .

- The ship has equipment equipped or has items in its Inventory .

- A sailor is on board the ship.

■ Upgrade Materials

The equipment required to upgrade the Bartali Sailboat to an Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. You can then use Black Stone (Armor) to enhance them . When you fail an enhancement attempt, the max durability of the equipment will decrease. You can purchase more of the equipment and use the copies to repair the original’s max durability to full .

▲ Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria

Additionally, Sailboats and Frigates can both be improved . Once they are improved, you can use the skills Volley and FocusFire .

Volley allows you to move the cannons on the left or right and fire them. While FocusFire allows you to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice.

There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. So, having your ship improved will aid you in your endeavor to build a carrack.

You can improve your ships at the Wharf Manager .

※ However , improving your ship does not change the materials required to upgrade them to a Caravel or Galleass .

■ Epheria Sailboat, Frigate Upgrade Materials

4. epheria caravel / galleass    .

Once you have obtained your Epheria Sailboat or Frigate, you can then work toward upgrading them to a Caravel or Galleass .

black desert bartali sailboat

▲ Left ) Epheria Caravel , Right ) Epheria Galleass

Caravels have 30 slots and can carry 10,000LT. This makes them great trading and bartering ships .

On the other hand, the Epheria Galleass has 4 cannons on each side, for a total of 8 cannons, which makes them great for naval combat.

Both of them can be improved to use the sailing skill Volley while moving, or the  FocusFire skill to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice for massive damage.

There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. So, having your ship improved will aid you in your efforts toward building a carrack.

The materials required to upgrade your ship to a Caravel or Galleass are listed below .

■ Epheria Caravel, Galleass Upgrade Materials

■ crow’s nest and ravinia    .

You might not have heard of Crow’s Nest or Ravinia at this point in your adventure.

Crow’s Nest is a small island located north of Tinberra Island .     Once you arrive in Crow’s Nest, you can talk to the NPC “ Ravinia .” She runs the Crow Coin Shop that sells items needed to upgrade large ships.

black desert bartali sailboat

▲ “ Crow’s Nest” is the island covered in fog, north of Tinberra Island .

Ravinia also gives the " Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log " quests. You can complete these quests to get the materials you need for upgrades.

The first quest you get is called “Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log I” and the last quest is “ Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log VII.” It will take 7 days to accept these quests in order. When you complete each of these quests, Ravinia will reward you with “ Ravinia's Wiggly Waggly Letter .” You use these letters to accept quests from Ravinia. The quests she gives provide upgrade materials required to upgrade Caravels and Galleass .

The 4 pieces of equipment required to upgrade a Epheria Caravel or Epheria Galleass can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria . The equipment can be enhanced using  “ Verdant Black Stones.” When using Verdant Black Stones to enhance ship equipment, you have a 100% chance to succeed at all levels. You will need Verdant Black Stone x55 to enhance a piece of equipment up to +10, a total of 220 Verdant Black Stones to enhance all four of them .

You can obtain Verdant Black Stones as follows.

1. Ravinia’s sisters have anchored in Port Epheria (Ruvinia), Velia (Rovinia), and Iliya Island (Revinia). You can exchange Lv. 1 trade goods through Ruvinia, Rovinia, and Revinia for a Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Voucher.      2. Bring the Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Voucher obtained from one of the sisters to Ravinia at the Crow’s Nest to exchange it for Verdant Black Stones. Rumor has it that Morco in Velia will also take Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Vouchers and exchange them for Verdant Black Stones as well.

5. Epheria Carrack(Balance, Advance, Volante, Valor)

You can upgrade the Epheria Carrack into four different types, and each vessel bears a unique trait. You can choose to upgrade your Carrack into one that best suits your playstyle .

Each carrack has a different trait.

◆ Epheria Carrack - Balance : A carrack with well-balanced stats .

◆ Epheria Carrack - Volante : An agile carrack with the fastest movement speed .

◆ Epheria Carrack - Valor : A combat-oriented carrack with the highest attack power .

◆ Epheria Carrack - Advance : A carrack with the highest storage capacity, making it most useful for content such as Bartering .

6. Ship Equipment

You can install the Epheria Caravel and Galleass, along with the four different types of Carrack vessels with ship equipment such as cannon, figurehead, sail, and plating .

Ship equipment starts at green grade and can be upgraded to blue grade equipment .

Be sure to purchase and enhance the correct types of ship equipment for Caravels, Galleass, and Carracks.

■ Epheria Caravel and Galleass Green Grade Equipment

You can purchase green grade equipment for the Caravel and Galleass through Philaberto Falasi at Port Epheria with Silver .

How to Complete the Old Bartali Sailboat Event in Black Desert Online

A step-by-step guide on how to get the Old Bartali Sailboat in Black Desert Online.

Limited Physical and Vinyl Editions of Life is Strange: Before the Storm Announced

Square Enix unveiled plans to release special limited edition sets of Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

Black Desert Online users have added incentive to learn how to complete the Old Bartali Sailboat event. This is because completion of the event will reward you with the Old Bartali Sailboat, among other goodies.

The Old Bartali Sailboat event kicked off yesterday, January 17th and is set to last until February 14th, giving you plenty of time to complete the event. However, if you want to speed up the process or if you’ve hit a few snags along the way, we’ve got you covered.

Below, we’ve put together a guide that will help teach you how to complete the Old Bartali Sailboat event in Black Desert Online!

black desert bartali sailboat

The first thing you’ll need to do in order to complete the Old Bartali Sailboat event in Black Desert Online is speak to the Black Spirit located in Velia. The city of Velia is located in the Balenos region east of Black Desert Online’s starting town of Olvia. Upon speaking with the Black Spirit, you’ll be given the Noisy Shore questline (as long as you’re level 50 or above).

With the questline accepted, proceed to the marker indicated on your map. The next step in completing the Old Bartali Sailboat event in Black Desert Online is speaking with the soldier on the shore outside Velia. You can find him by following the map marker after speaking with the Black Spirit in Velia.

Upon interacting with the soldier, he’ll tell you to be careful around a mysterious blue creature that he and his companions recently caught. With this information passed to you, you’ll successfully complete the Noisy Shore quest. With the Noisy Shore quest out of the way, you’ll need to return to Velia and speak with Igor Bartali at his how (as indicated by the marker on your map).

In speaking with him, he’ll ask you to investigate this mysterious sea creature with Alustin. This will trigger a new questline, A Fish From the Great Ocean. In order to complete this new quest, you’ll need to find Alustin and speak with him to confirm the existence of the sea creature. Alustin can be found near Bartali’s house (as indicated by the marker on your map).

black desert bartali sailboat

After speaking with Alustin, you’ll receive the Record of Vell’s Heart which details the sea creature on page 359. Upon reading about the creature and learning its name (Lopter), Alustin will task you with collecting one of its scales. To do this, head to the shore and collect the scale by interacting with three Lopters.

Return to Alustin with the scale and he will reward you with Vell’s Fine Powder. Next, return to the Black Spirit who will give you a new questline, Investigate Vell’s Realm. To complete this quest, return to Bartali who will be excited to hear of your plans to investigate Vell’s Realm. After you’ve finished chatting, he’ll give you a Ship License for the Old Bartali Sailboat as a reward.

With the Ship License in hand, head to the wharf and speak with the manager, Croix. In doing so, you’ll be able to register your Ship License and add the Old Bartali Sailboat to the list of ships under your command. You’ll be able to obtain the Old Bartali Sailboat on a weekly basis, as the power and durability of the ship will eventually result in it being destroyed.

While you can’t repair it, you can always run through the steps above and get yourself another one until the Old Bartali Sailboat event ends on February 14th.

By reading through this guide, you should now know how to complete the Old Bartali Sailboat event in Black Desert Online.

Black Desert Online: Old Bartali Sailboat Event Guide

Image of Serhii Patskan

The first huge event of 2018 in Black Desert Online starts with the Old Bartali Sailboat event, which takes place from January 17 to February 14. The event consists of a series of quests that will lead you to the Bartali’s ship.

You will be able to obtain the ship license and become the captain of the old sailboat. If you want to know how to quickly get from one quest to another, then follow this step-by-step guide for all the info you need.

How to Get to Old Bartali Sailboat in BDO

black desert bartali sailboat

Step 1: Speak to Black Spirit in Velia

As usual, you must first speak to the Black Spirit in Velia, a main city in the Balenos region, located directly east of the starting town Olvia. Accept the Noisy Shore questline from him, if you are at least level 50, and go to the marker indicated on the map.

Step 2: Speak to Soldier on the Shore

The marker will lead you to the shore outside Velia, where you will need to speak to a soldier. He will ask you to be careful around a mysterious blue creature that he and his companions just caught in the sea. This will complete the first quest.

Step 3: Speak to Igor Bartali

Return to the town of Velia, and speak to Igor Bartali at his house (you will see the marker on your map). He will ask you to investigate this creature with Alustin, which will trigger a new quest — A Fish From the Great Ocean.

Step 4: Speak to Alustin

Not far away from the Bartali’s house you will find Alustin, an old man who is able to confirm the existence of the mysterious fish. You will receive the Record of Vell’s Heart knowledge from him, which describes this creature on page 359.

black desert bartali sailboat

Step 5: Collect Lopter’s Scale

You will learn that this creature is called Lopter. Alustin will then give you the task to collect its scale. So go back to the ocean shore and collect the scale by interacting with three Lopters. Bring it back to Alustin, and he will reward you with Vell’s Fine Powder.

Step 6: Investigate Vell’s Realm

Now you can speak to Black Spirit once again, and he will give you a new Investigate Vell’s Realm questline, which will lead you ever closer to the old sailboat.

Go back to Igor Bartali and speak to him once again. He will be pleasantly surprised that you are eager to go to Vell’s Realm. As a reward, he will grant you a Ship License for Old Bartali Sailboat.

Step 7: Speak to Wharf Manager

When you have the license on your hands, you can now go to the wharf and speak with the manager named Croix. Finally, you will be able to register your license, and the Old Bartali Sailboat will be added to the list of ships under your command.

This ship can be obtained on a weekly basis since the power and durability of the ship will be used up, and eventually it will be destroyed. This means that you can’t repair it, but you can always get a new one up until February 14.

Even if you think that Old Bartali Sailboat isn’t very good, remember that, first of all, you get it entirely for free, and secondly, it’s a big boat, and you don’t get to have those too often.

  • General Discussion

So, I decided to do the Great Expedition questline, because it's 'suggested'. At some point I am required to kill some sea monsters, so I guess I need a bigger boat.

I've been given for free Bartali Sailboat during the quest and I aim to upgrade it at least once, to increase my chances during monster hunting.

Standardized Timber Square 800 Steel 600 Pine Plywood 1500 Flax Fabric 300 Ship Upgrade Permit: Epheria Sailboat = 100M silver

100 Hard Pillar     1000 Log     1000 Plywood Hardener       3000 Bloody Tree Knot       4000 Fir Sap       3000 Trace of Earth       1000 Pure Powder Reagent          1 Wild Grass, 1 Silver Azalea, 1 Sugar, 1 Purified Water

Nothing looks too hard, it's only very first upgrade of weakest boat, right?

Right. It took me around 1 week to gather meterials, until I got to Trace of Earth .

It looks like this material is extremely rare and hard to get, it's not gatherable, so we can get it ether from node or from very rare drops.

Ok, I spent last CP to invest in Ancient Stone Chamber, spent ~500 Energy to get Professional worker, and after 2 days of work I got only 5 Trace of Earth .

At current rate it will take 3000/2.5=1200 days= 3.29 years to collect enough Traces of Earth for a simplest boat upgrade. Obviously its not worth the time and investment, buying from market cost 600M, while buying Epheria Sailboat only 565M.

I am not entertained at all and I have a lot of questions.

If the very first, simplest boat upgrade costs so much time and effort, what cost and effort will be next upgrade?

Why Trace of Earth was put into recipe, but its not gatherable?

If upgrade cost was made so long and hard on purpose, then which exactly route the game motivate me to follow? Is it just to buy Traces for market, but why if its cheaper to buy WHOLE BOAT for less silver? I dont have enought CP to setup another node, but even if I had, it'll cut wait time in half, so it will be 1.5 years of just waiting, so lets assume I grind in addition and get very rare drops 1 in hour, it still will take a lot of time, and its only first, basic, simplest boat upgrade. I dont understand how people upgrade to carracks, next upgrades supposed to be harder.

I just dont get it, I dont understand something or is it upgrade path simply broken or there's some underlying game wisdom I still dont understand after 2+ years.

  • Inappropriate Words
  • Inappropriate Content
  • Real money trading

It is usually suggested to buy the Sailboat on the Marketplace and save the Bartali to upgrade to a Frigate.

Obviously yes, buying sailboat from market is cheaper and faster, but why the upgrade 'quest' even exists? Its pretty clear as day that nobody ever will do upgrade.

For some reason I stumble upon hard-to-explain-logically all the time during 'questing'.

For example, recently I tried to do the Crow's Nest quesline, because it hanged in my questlist for too long. Result:

- 1.5 hours swimming to the island itself (I had no boat at that time);

- do the questing, gaining knowledge, all is fine until 5 bosses fight;

- I'm in lifeskill gear, +1.5 hours swim back to mainland to grab battle gear;

- +1.5 hour swim back to isand to fight boss;

- which mops the floor with me, several times, ragequit, try next day, not died but fight took too long and boss de-spawned;

- at some point managed to kill boss, pure luck I guess;

- +1.5 hour swim back to mainland;

- forgot to gain 2 more knowledge, +3 hour swim back to island and back to mainland again;

So, I literally spent 2 days of my life a) swimming in the ocean semi-afk and b) dying repeatedly to overpowered undertuned boss, all is for 1 miserable Energy point.

At this point it all adds up, and I most likely will just ignore all 'questlines' because the tendency is obvious. Its all designed very poorly and excuse me, but its too hard in terms of time-consuming doing nothing, I'm not waiting 3 years for a boat upgrade.

During all those hours of swimming, did you happen to think "gee, maybe I ought to get a boat" - ?  Frigates Cogs can be had for 1000 loyalties (5 days). (edit: oops)

As for the boat building, perhaps materials had different cost and availability when the recipes were created.  Sounds like they need updating badly.  But requests like that, if they get heard at all, usually result in 'improvements' that make things even worse.

Traces: I ran into something similar recently with Traces of Memory needed for Forest Path wagons / gear.

I had a boat, got sank down by pirates first time I went into ocean. Never wanted a boat since then and was dis-interested in everything ocean-related so far. As they say, "You only get one single chance to make a first impression".

You have, like you said, multiple nodes producing the trace of earth. It is, indeed a bottleneck, but it's not as horrible as you make it out to be. Iirc, Bashims drop the trace and you keep being given "Choose your traces" box during various events. Put a PO on the CM while at it too.

All in all, it might be that you are used with low effort, high rewards because... The thing is, PA made a lot of the hard-to-get items much easier to obtain now. It may also be just a moment of panic. You'll get over it, don't worry.

Also, getting an Epheria Sailboat with designs (via the Philaberto's daily quest) is long. 20 days to just get those. Longer for frigates. You want to bypass all that with the upgrade. Spending less time and less resources? Hmm... Interesting. The Hard Pillars are the extra cost for cutting the time down to, basically, 1 click. If it's too steep for you now, go the traditional way, quest 20 days for the designs and craft the boat in 1 month at Epheria (or longer, since you mentioned your CP shortage). I would recommend going the Frigate way though, as you can barter well enough of a Galleass, but you can barely hunt sea monsters on a Caravel with the same gear level.

Frigates can be had for 1000 loyalties (5 days).

They're called cogs, not frigates. Frigates are the warship you can build in Epheria, along with Sailboats.

Oops, damn, totally right.  I was looking right at it too.  Correcting...

I have only 1 node producing Traces of Earth, not "multiple". I cannot have multiple because I ran out of CP (363 max), grinding dailies for more CP will take several month anyway, so I'm not even trying. My main source of income was Gathering, no it's not "low effort high reward", it's actually the opposite, because most profitable gathering (snake/scorpion meat at Tshira) yields me ~300M day, PER DAY, and I cannot gather more because I run out of Energy (530 max) with PEN butchering knife and all TRI manos gear. This is very far from "high reward". Also, I cannot "build" a sailboat at Epheria because it requires to setup a worshop with CP which I dont have.

This "questline" is either badly designed, or broken, or both, and I dont have any faith it will be fixed before I lose interest in this activity alltogether, just like nobody touched Papua Crinea, Snake Statues in Media, and so on and so forth, despite being reported and discussed.

Also, I'm not waiting 3 years, not 1.5 years, not even 6 months for lowest-tier simplest upgrade, and even if I somehow gather those 3k Traces of Earth, most likely I'll just abandon this questline because I'm pretty sure there will be problems like this ahead, just like it was in every previous "questline", and I'm not doing any Atoraxion, Magnus, whatever else, because its badly designed, bugged, broken, or undertuned, and I'll get only frustration and wasted time in the end.

If PA doesnt care about quality of their own content, then why should I.

You must be doing a lot of things horribly wrong there, if you're a lifeskiller that doesn't gather valuables like traces.

Also I make the same amount of silver on season, hunting. And hunting on season is... well, as you put it a bit later, undertuned.

If you care to get the boat, you'll rearrange your CP investments to prioritize traces and/or the sailboat building (that includes, ofc, connecting nodes across the world, to send more workers, etc). Magnus is fine - loading screens are not. Granted, it would be a bit too much to get a virtually free pen Boss gear piece on each completion, don't you think? Atoraxxion is fun and rewarding for the little time it takes (~1h to run all 3 dungeons on season, for example).

The quality of the content can be increased, no arguing there. But one has to wonder, looking at all the "hardships" you have to endure, what is quality content for you. Low effort high reward? Effort in a game in general and in BDO in particular is, for me, doing stuff you don't like. If you enjoy the activity you picked up in the game, it'll be fun, not effort. And as such, rewarding on its own, before counting your silver.

Let me add the following:

1. You don't need to upgrade your boat to do the questchain. First time round I ran it alone with Bartali's Sailboat. The tasks you're given during it are balanced for that particular boat just fine. Not a 1-shot-kill stuff you'd have with upgraded caravel/galleass. If you can't handle it alone, then do it as it was designed (as you may have noticed, the cannons need to be fired by someone else if you're at the wheel). Sea content was - before caravels and carracks - group content.

2. If you would want the boat, you'd get the boat. I've build my first Epheria Sailboat in 2017 in 1 month - and times were hard then, lifeskill-wise. It was fun, with less CP, less energy and more difficult processing.

3. If getting some traces has you at the edge of your sanity, you're better off not trying to progress with the boat upgrades. The subsequent ones will be a lot more punishing. They'll expect you do use the boat you have in various ways! Spend time with virtually no gain! Horrible, horrible experience... for a landlubber.

Meh, whatever! Find stuff you enjoy to do in the game and stick to that. Sea content and production chains might not be your cup of tea.

I'm pretty sure I do need a bigger boat, and that boat must be a Caravel, no less, because sea fight when I man the cannon and my ship cannot move/maneuver being a sitting duck for everyone to abuse - this mechanics is pure torture for a single player. And I'm pretty sure this quest fight is not anywhere near "balanced" because I did main quest line many times and all boss fights are pain, especially Cavalo in Cron Castle with his all-screen AoE that knockdown-locks my character literally every single time. I just dont trust the devs, their aim is to kill me and sink my boat, so I need to be prepared twice as much. And I'm pretty sure I do have perfect sanity check by declining to wait 3 years for an upgrade.

I can agree with you that this questline is not for me, just as all sea content. I'll just let this quest gather dust forever in my quest log and do something else, not necessarily in this game, because it obviously not friendly and not reasonable hard even at the beginner's level. There is no need to kill a player repeatedly few dozens of times before letting them to proceed with quest.

ship basics

Introduction

There are lots of different types of ships in Black Desert Online. Mid-tier ships can have ship skills and also have their own ship UI and uses other than just transportation. Lower-tier/older ships, such as the row boat and fishing boat, are destroyed when they run out of durability, whilst higher grade ships are permanent, and can be repaired at a Wharf Manager if they are destroyed in combat.

Ships allow the player to travel through the rivers and oceans of BDO independently, without the need of an NPC ferry. Lower-tiered ships can be acquired by buying them from the Central Market or crafting them. But higher tier ships must be crafted by the player themself, and as the ships get larger, more materials and effort are required to construct them.

This guide covers the basics of all ships, such as Ship Skills, the Ship UI, Rations, Sailors, etc.

For specific information about a certain ship, or ship crafting/upgrade materials and gear, please use our dedicated guides.

List of Ships

The Ship Anchor icon in the top left (next to mount icon and under your character level,) is very useful for teleporting to the ship or moving the ship if it gets stuck:

  • If you left-click the icon when you are within 10-30 distance from the ship, you will automatically move to the ship’s wheel
  • If you left-click the icon when you are within 10 distance from the ship, you will automatically grab the ship’s wheel
  • If you right-click the icon when you are over 40 distance from the ship, you will get a ping to the ship’s location
  • If you right-click the icon when you are within 80m distance from the ship, you can teleport the ship to your location
  • You must be at the water surface to call the ship, the call has a 30 second cooldown and other players will fall off the ship if you call it.

Ship Basics Guide

All ships also have the ship UI below when you board them:

Ship Basics Guide

Board/Disembark Function

As well as using the Ship UI to call or move to your ship wheel, the Board/Disembark function allows you to move between the dock and your ship wheel by pressing a button on the UI. You can use the “Board” button while stood near the wharf manager to automatically move you to the ship, then press the “Board” button again to move onto the wheel.

You can also use the “Disembark” button to move to the wharf manager from your ship, allowing easier movement for bartering and other sailing content.

Wind Speed and Direction

Wind speed and direction affects your ship speed, which can be seen on the ship UI. The numbers show the strength of the wind, and the arrows around the border show their direction.

Ideally, you want to have the arrow at the bottom (pointing upwards) to get the maximum ship speed. Going against the wind will cause you to go very slowly and may even make your boat unable to move if they are too strong.

Ship Basics Guide

The wind direction and speed can change at any time and becomes stronger the further out at sea you are. The wind icon will change color depending on its strength.

On mid-tier ships, you can raise (fold) or lower (unfold) the sails. If the wind direction is facing upwards, then you will gain speed by unfolding the sails, and if the wind direction is facing downwards, then you can fold your fails to not be affected by the wind.

Ship Basics Guide

Ship Rations and Emergency Rations

Ship Rations are consumed when the boat is moving and will drain quickly when you use your ship skills or when you use island interactions. When you run out of ship rations, your boat will move much slower and may not even move at all if you are going against the wind/current. You are also unable to use ship skills if you run out of rations.

To restore your ship rations , you need to go to a wharf manager and refuel the ship. You can also get your ship crew to gather supplies from islands for the chance to restore a small number of your ship rations.

Ship Basics Guide

If you are unable to restore the ship rations you can use Emergency Rations. This is done using consumable foods. The higher grade the food is, the more rations it will give your ship. Whilst on your ship, press P to open the Ship info window and then click the + (plus) symbol next to rations. You can now select food to use and the quantity you would like to use (similar to feeding workers).

Ship Basics Guide

Ship Durability and Repair Items

Your ship durability is the red HP bar on the ship UI and is reduced when the ship takes damage from sea monsters/other ships, crashing into obstacles, or successfully hitting a target with the Ram ship skill.

When the ship reaches 0% durability, it is destroyed and you must return to a Wharf Manager to remote collect the ship.

You can repair your ship durability at a wharf manager by using the “Repair Damage” option when the ship is checked into the wharf.

Ship Basics Guide

If you are at sea, you can emergency repair the ship using the following items:

To repair the ship, interact with the mast while the repair item is in your character inventory.

Ship Basics Guide

Cannons and Cannonball Supply

Mid-tier ships, such as the Improved Epheria ships or higher, can no longer be mounted by a player and are instead controlled by the player at the wheel of the ship.

The cannons are controlled using LMB and RMB. LMB will fire all the cannons on the left side of your ship, and RMB will fire all the cannons on your right side. So if your ship has 4 cannons on each side, you will fire all 4 cannons on that side and use a total of 4 cannon balls. The cooldown for your cannons is seperate so you can fire both sides at the same time by pressing LMB+RMB.

On the mid-tier or higher ships, you also gain access to the new FocusFire skill which allows you to enter a different view and can help you with aiming your cannons.

  • Enter FocusFire mode by pressing Q (for left-side cannons) or E (for right-side cannons)
  • Use your mouse position to change the range you would like to fire the cannonball

Ship Basics Guide

Higher tier ships will automatically store a certain amount of cannon balls when you refuel them at a wharf manager (300 for Epheria Caravel, 600 for Epheria Galleass). This means you do not need to buy cannonballs for your ship, but if you run out of cannonballs you will need to go back to the wharf manager to restock or use Emergency Cannonball Supply items.

To use Cannonball Supply items, make sure the item is in your character inventory then press P to open your ship information. Use the (+) button next to cannonball capacity to use the supply items.

Ship Basics Guide

Gear and Inventory Management

Equipment and your ship inventory can not be used when you are out in the ocean. This means you will not be able to store items directly in your ship inventory and you must instead go to a wharf manager to deposit/withdraw items or ship gear from your boat. Use the “Load Cargo” option at the Wharf Manager to move to/from your ship.

However, you can move items directly from your town storage into your ship (if you are at a wharf manager in a town).

Ship Basics Guide

For information about crafting and enhancing ship gear, check our relevant ship guides:

Transporting your Ship

If your ship is docked at another island, you can transport it to a different location by talking to a Wharf Manager.

  • Transporting a ship costs 1,000,000 silver and takes 10 minutes

Use the “Transport Mount” button in the bottom left, then select a dock and the ship you would like to transport. This will move the ship to your current location.

Ship Basics Guide

You can also transport a ship from your current location, to another dock. This is done by selecting the ship at the Wharf Manager and using the “Transport” button from the drop down options. You can then select which wharf you would like the ship to be moved to.

Ship Basics Guide

While the ship is being transported, the text “Transporting” appears on the Mount status window. On the right, you can also view the time remaining for the transport to complete.

Ship Basics Guide

Ship Skills

Ship skills are only available on certain ships. You will need a certain level of sailing skill to use special skills. Skills also use up your ship’s power stat.

Currently, the fastest way to level your sailing lifeskill is by completing the sailing daily quests . You can also gain a small amount of EXP when sailing your ship.

There are Silver Embroidered Sailor’s Clothes which will give you higher sailing EXP and can be enhanced for a higher EXP gain. You can also use other lifeskill buffs to increase your sailing EXP.

Sailors and Crew Management

Crew members are used on ships to perform certain actions such as pillaging for resources on an island or for the bartering lifeskill . Each crew member has their own level and stats and can be leveled up by killing sea monsters to increase their stats. Crew members can go up to a maximum of level 10 and can gain exp by killing sea monsters.

Hiring Crew Members

To begin hiring crew members, you must first complete the “ [The Great Expedition] Oquilla’s Eye ” questline from your Black Spirit which will introduce you to bartering. The questline will give you a free crew member and also give increase your sailor slots.

Once you’ve completed the questline, you will need to buy a crew member contract. This costs 3 million silver and can be bought from the innkeeper Islin Bartali in Velia, from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria, or Criox at Velia docks.

Ship Basics Guide

You must then find a sailor to hire. Sailors are found in these locations:

  • Velia – inside the Inn around the tables
  • Port Epheria –  along the beach near the whale
  • Iliya Island –  along the harbor and up the road

Interact with the sailor and use the “Hire Sailor” option to attempt to hire the sailor. If you fail, the contract is consumed and the sailor will walk away from you. You cannot attempt to hire the same sailor for a certain period of time (1 day or more). If you are successful, the sailor will now join your crew and can be assigned to a ship at the wharf manager.

Ship Basics Guide

Additional Sailor Slots

To gain more sailor slots after completing the questline, you will need to buy the “Captain’s Medallion” item from the pearl store:

  • Pearl Store (F3) > Function > Captain’s Medallion – 500 pearls each (maximum of 14 purchases)

You can have a maximum of 50 sailor slots.

You can also obtain a quest from the Shipyard Director Chulong in Nampo Moodle Village, which will reward you with Sailor’s Oath x3, granting you 3 more permanent sailor slots.

  • This quest can only be accepted and completed once per Family.

Ship Basics Guide

Managing your Crew

Some crew members will demand more cabins and this may limit the number of crew members you can have on your ship.

If you run out of Rations on your ship, your crew members will start to lose condition. When a crew member runs out of Condition, they will no longer do any actions on your ship and their stats will no longer apply. They must be fed a new food item called Chowder to recover. Sailors also drop to 0 Condition if you Remote Collect your ship, or if your ship is destroyed.

Sailors can also become sick. To cure a sick Sailor you must use an Elixir of Regeneration, which is made using Simple Alchemy.

Ship Basics Guide

Sailor Stats and Types of Sailors

When you hire a sailor you can see the type of sailor on the name tag above their head. Below is a table showing the base stats each type of sailor can have. As the sailor levels up it will gain better stats.

The best sailors you can get for Bartering are the Innocent Sailors.

Ship Basics Guide

Ship Sea Crystals

Sea Crystals can be equipped to mid-tier and higher ships, giving your ship a buff to 1 of the 8 possible stats.

There are 4 different grades of Sea Crystals:

When you obtain a Sea Crystal, press RMB on the item to obtain a crystal with one random stat bonus.

The Sea crystal can then be equipped on your ship by right-clicking the item while stood on your ship. Press F5 while standing near the wheel of your ship to open the Ship Information window.

BDO Epheria Sailboat: Blueprint, Materials, Quest

BDO Epheria Sailboat: Blueprint, Materials, Quest

Epheria Sailboat is the best T2 barter and trade ship because it has more inventory slots and Weight Limit than the other T2 ship, Epheria Frigate . It is easier to craft than the battle ready Epheria Frigate, but still takes a bit of planning and time to create yourself.

Why Epheria Sailboat Matters:

  • Epheria Sailboat is the easiest T2 ship to obtain.
  • Its cheaper than the Epheria Frigate in every way.  In materials, silver, or seals cost.
  • Most materials for Epheria Sailboat can be obtained via having workers gather at nodes. Logs will probably have to be gathered yourself, since they are usually a bottleneck item.
  • Epheria Sailboat can be used for battle and sea monster hunting, but keep in mind it has half the cannons and 10% less manuverability. Epheria Frigate is a better choice if you have more fun sea monster hunting.

For a detailed T2 ship comparison, view our Epheria Sailboat vs Frigate guide.

Epheria Sailboat can be upgraded to Improved Epheria Sailboat (T3) or Epheria Caravel (T4).

Epheria Sailboat Acquisition

4 Ways to Obtain Epheria Sailboat:

  • Craft at Port Epheria Shipyard (With patch 9-26-23 , materials cost for Epheria Sailboat/Frigate were cut in half.)
  • Upgrade from a Bartali Sailboat (more expensive, but no build time)
  • 20x Shakatu’s Seals (see details below)
  • Marketplace – easiest option but limited by supply and demand and fails at appeasing poor folks!

Epheria Sailboat from Shakatu’s Seals

The easiest way to obtain an Epheria Sailboat (besides buying at the Marketplace) is by exchanging Shakatu’s Seals in Shakatu city.

black desert bartali sailboat

Requirement:  Level 56+

Shakatu’s Seals are obtained over a period of time via Attendance Rewards.

2 months = 1 Epheria Sailboat

With 10 Shakatu Seals per month from “Loyal” Attendance Reward, it would take 2 months to obtain an Epheria Sailboat.

This assumes you log in every day to obtain the Attendance Reward. (You can catch up on the weekends, Friday and Saturday after reset, if you get behind. Up to 2 Attendance Rewards per day.)

You can have more than one Attendance Reward tab, depending on your choices. For example, you can have one Attendance Reward for “Loyal”, one for “Returning”, and one for “Guild” all at the same time.

Special events can also give Shakatu Seals.

The old Shining Shakatu’s Seals were phased out. (They had a higher cost requirement of 30.)

Event Radiant Shakatu's Seal

Epheria Sailboat from Crafting at Port Epheria Shipyard

You can craft an Epheria Sailboat at the Port Epheria Shipyard. (2nd floor, Epheria 3-5).

Materials & Design for Epheria Sailboat:

NOTE: The base amounts listed in the third materials column below assumes each Processing craft will yield an average of 2.5.

Epheria Sailboat Cost Analysis

Prices and stock are auto-updated every 30 minutes for NA server.

The processed materials for Epheria Sailboat can usually be purchased on the marketplace, except for Standardized Timber Square. (Processing logs lessens its value in BDO, unless you make something profitable with it.)

Base Materials Cost

Lets see what it would cost if we purchased all the base materials from the market and processed it ourselves.

At the time of this writing, the cost sink of processing logs is really hurting our silver bags. But don’t hope for ever purchasing any on the market.

Other Price Comparisons

Traditionally, Epheria Sailboat is on preorder. But it’s not as bad as the preorder on Logs and its processed forms.

All of the materials for crafting the Epheria Sailboat in the shipyard can be obtained with the gathering life skill. (Except for the Epheria Blueprint, which requires quests.)

Epheria Sailboat mats are available for purchase on the marketplace, but high demand items, like Logs (or its processed parts), may be hard to purchase.

Standardized Timber Square

You will need 400 Standardized Timber Squares to craft an Epheria Sailboat.

Craft Standardized Timber Squares via Processing (L) → Chopping Logs all the way to tier 3.

400 Standardized Timber Square Processing

Thanks bdolytics.com for Standardized Timber Square processing calculator!

Gathering Logs for Epheria Sailboat

The base Log amount required is about 7,400, if you have Artisan 6 Processing.

Logs are often considered a bottleneck item, because they can’t be obtained via worker nodes. Usually they are obtained via gathering with a lumbering axe. Unless there is a special event or similar going on, you can expect these to be in low supply/high price.

Also, Standardized Timber Square is one of the least profitable items to process for silver, so only make them if you have to.

Time to equip an axe and get started gathering trees! (Pine trees may be your best option, since you will need Pine Plywood as well.)

bdo log

Pine Plywood

You will need 750 Pine Plywood to craft an Epheria Sailboat.

Craft Pine Plywood via Processing (L) → Chopping Pine Timber all the way to tier 3.

750 Pine Plywood Processing

Thanks bdolytics.com for Pine Plywood processing calculator!

Getting Pine Timber for Epheria Sailboat

The base Pine Timber amount required is about 5,600, if you have Artisan 6 Processing.

Pine Timber is not as difficult to obtain as Logs, but it can be in high demand since the nodes to obtain Pine Timber can be tricky to purchase for new players. There are two very nice and cheap ones in Land of the Morning Light.

Pine Timber Worker Nodes:

  • Honglim Base → Dalbeol Village – 2 CP
  • Bomnae County → Nopsae’s Byeot County – 3 CP
  • Serendia Shrine → Glish – 6 CP
  • Marie Cave → Keplan – 8 CP
  • Khimut Lumber Camp → Tarif – 8 CP

pine timber

Pine Tree Map

You will need lots of Pine Timber and Logs. So it only makes sense to gather Pine Trees.

bdolytics.com has a helpful resource map. Click on Gathering, then Trees, then check Pine Tree option.

Notice the dense clusters of Pine all around Trent and SW Calpheon territory. I like this location because west of Trent there isn’t any mobs to bother you while you gather.

If Trent is too far to travel, Pine trees are also plentiful in southern Serendia territory. There’s a good patch of Pine SW of Castle Ruins.

Logging Minigame

You can use the Green Artisan gathering skill to gather more Pine Timber and Logs in a shorter amount of time.

Get this ability by reaching Artisan level gathering and obtaining Green Thumb knowledge in Land of the Morning Light.

Press SPACE when the yellow bar is within the blue target area.

Each successful strike, makes the target area smaller and more difficult to hit.

Sometimes the yellow bar moves faster than other times.

If you press SPACE outside the blue target too many times the minigame ends in failure.

Getting Coal for Epheria Sailboat

The base Coal amount required is about 610, if you have Master Processing.

Coal is not as difficult to obtain as Logs, but it can be in high demand since there is really only one good cheap node near Keplan that gives it.

Coal Worker Nodes:

  • Keplan Quarry → Keplan – 2 CP
  • Omar Lava Cave → Tarif – 7 CP
  • Glutoni Cave→ Keplan – 8 CP

coal

Coal can be gathered with a pickaxe around Keplan in Calpheon. You can also find coal objects to gather around Omar Lava Cave in Mediah, but I don’t recommend this location because it lacks iron objects, which you’ll also need.

bdolytics.com has a helpful resource map. Click on Gathering, then Ore, then check Coal option.

Find Resources is a talent on certain pets to help you spot coal to gather.

Blank Stare…

Getting Iron Ore for Epheria Sailboat

The base Iron Ore amount required is about 1220, if you have Master Processing. Processing (L) → Heating this will produce about 610 Melted Iron Shard.

Iron Ore is easy to obtain usually since there are many cheap, beginner friendly nodes for it.

Iron Ore Worker Nodes:

  • Coastal Cave → Velia – 2 CP
  • Southern Swamp → Glish – 2 CP
  • Coastal Cliff → Velia – 3 CP
  • Pilgrim’s Haven → Sand Grain Bazaar – 4 CP
  • Abandoned Iron Mine → Altinova – 4 CP
  • Northern Heidel Quarry → Heidel – 5 CP

There are many more, but they get more expensive in CP cost.

Iron Ore Map

Iron Ore can be gathered with a pickaxe in Calpheon around Keplan. You can’t find much iron objects around Omar Lava Cave, so it’s better to gather around Keplan, where coal can also be found.

bdolytics.com has a helpful resource map. Click on Gathering, then Ore, then check Iron option.

Flax Fabric

You will need 150 Flax Fabric to craft an Epheria Sailboat.

Flax Fabric is usually in stock for us to purchase on the marketplace, but it’s fairly easy to obtain the mats and craft it yourself. This is one of the processing recipes that is usually NOT profitable in silver per hour because there is not enough demand for it on the marketplace.

Step 1: Processing (L) → Grinding:

Step 2: Processing (L) → Heating:

10 Flax Thread

150 Flax Fabric Processing

Thanks bdolytics.com for Flax Fabric processing calculator!

Getting Flax for Epheria Sailboat

The base Flax amount required is about 1240, if you have Artisan 1 Processing. Processing (L) → Grinding this will produce about 620 Flax Thread. Then Heat the threads to make Flax Fabric.

Flax is easy to obtain usually since there are a few beginner friendly nodes for it and not much demand for its use.

Flax Worker Nodes:

  • Costa Farm → Heidel – 3 CP
  • Moretti Plantation → Heidel – 3 CP
  • Kamasylve Temple →  Tarif – 6 CP

Upgrading Epheria Sailboat

Epheria Sailboat can be upgraded to Improved Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Caravel. Epheria Caravel is a much stronger ship, but the materials are more difficult.
