Championships Settled at New York Yacht Club Race Week

Published on July 16th, 2016 by Editor -->

Newport, RI (July 16, 2016) – With 19 boats, the J/109 fleet was the biggest to compete in the 2016 New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. By the time today’s first race started just after 1 p.m., however, only two mattered.

David Rosow’s Loki (Southport, Conn.) and Donald Filippelli’s Caminos (Amagansett, N.Y.) started the day each with 23 points. With third place 14 points back and a morning delay limiting the class to just one race, the class’s North American Championship, and a Rolex Stainless Steel Submariner Date timepiece, came down to which of these boats beat the other around the track.

Rosow preached all regatta about keeping things simple. With the regatta on the line, he didn’t see any reason to stray from the approach that had gotten them this far.

“We wanted the pin end and to be near Caminos,” he said. “If the opportunity presented itself we would’ve gotten in front of them. We knew we had boat speed compared to the fleet. We had a good start in the front row. We knew it was a two-boat race, and we just had to beat them.”

While Rosow was able to get away cleanly from the pin end, Caminos found itself mired in traffic after a mid-line start, and was eventually forced to tack away. By the time the boats came together at the windward mark, Loki was second, with Caminos two spots back. With the early advantage, and a steady 6- to 10-knot breeze opening few passing lanes, the key was to simply not overthink the strategy for the remainder of the race.

“From there we just shepherded them around the course,” said Rosow, who’s owned Loki for 10 years. “Full credit to Caminos they sailed very impressively. They’re good competitors.”

For Rosow, this is his first North American championship. He’s won distance races before, but never anything on this scale in one-design competition. Adding in a Rolex watch and, no surprise, he was pretty elated.

“Pumped up,” he said. “Incredible. I have a perma grin that won’t come off for a while.”

Dan Cheresh (Saugatuck, Mich.) was no less excited about his win in the C&C 30 One-Design’s inaugural North American Championship. Cheresh has won a handful of North American titles in other boats, but this was the first time the trophy came with a wearable component. The C&C 30 One-Design winner was the recipient of the second of three Rolex timepieces awarded during Part II of Race Week at Newport.

“We put a plan together 15 months ago, starting at the NYYC Annual in 2015,” said Cheresh.”This is a great sailing venue, New York Yacht Club is a great yacht club. There’s unbelievable history here. To win the first North American championships in Newport at the NYYC, it doesn’t get any better than this. This was by far the most rewarding event I’ve ever sailed in.”

Of the nice classes in Race Week, Cheresh’s team started the final day with the largest lead over second place, nine points. A missed shift off the line in Race 1 quickly put the majority of that advantage in jeopardy.

“The first race was a little tough, we got off the line up toward the committee boat, tacked over to port and the guys on the inside of us just got wound up and we were in a deep, deep sixth place,” said Cheresh. “We just talked to each other and just said, ‘Stay settled, stay calm.’ We passed a couple of boats and that made us feel a lot better.”

With a first in today’s first race, Kip Meadow’s roXanne (Raleigh, N.C.) pushed itself clear of a pack of five boats contesting second place, and within reach of the lead. But off the line in Race 2, Cheresh and his team did their best to quash any hopes of a final-day comeback.

“We focused on roXanne in the pre-start maneuvers and the rest of the guys peeled away,” said Cheresh. “We did a little bit of match racing in the pre-start. We got of the line in good shape had a nice hole to leeward and we were able to get in front and extend.”

From there, Cheresh let his boat do what it had done all regatta, sail fast. “Speed,” he said with a smile, “is a great tactician.”

With the North American title in the bag, Cheresh will switch hats back to that of the class’s president and lead cheerleader. A nine-boat North Americans is a nice start, but he expects bigger things in the next 12 to 18 months.

“This is a high-profile class and a high-profile boat, and we hope we can continue to build upon this,” he said. “At Key West next year hopefully we’ll have 15 to 16 boats. The 2017 North Americans at Block Island Race Week, we’ll have 15 to 17. I think the class is continuing to grow. 2017 is a very important year in my mind for the class.”

The third Rolex went to the top-performing yacht among the 25 that competed under IRC. The winner was Stephen Murray’s Decision (New Orleans), which won IRC 2 with a 3-point cushion over Andrew and Linda Weiss’s Christopher Dragon (Mamaroneck, N.Y.).

“We have been to this event many times, but I do not think we have ever been on the podium so winning is a real treat,” said Murray. “The team has been sailing together for about a year, it is the same team that we had last summer, so we have been building upon the team’s experience over the last year. Our best day was [Day 3 when we did] Stadium Sailing so results wise that was our favorite I would have to say, but we enjoyed having the variety of courses because that let us try out different strategies and strengths.”

Decision’s regatta got off to a bumpy start. After winning the first race, the starboard lifeline broke on the approach to the first windward mark of Race 2 and dumped three crew into the water.

“The crew responded quickly, and we were able to keep racing,” said Murray. “Lots of credit goes to the guys in the water. [The guys on the boat never thought of retiring] and apparently the guys in the water felt the same way as they waved off all the support boats who were moving to grab them. Pretty proud of that.”

The sixth place was Decision’s worst finish of the regatta, but the three points they saved over a DNF proved crucial in a very tight class

“I think we had very good boat speed. Our main trimmer, David Gerber, is fantastic and fantastic at keeping me focused,” said Murray. “Our tactician, Marty Kullman, did a really great job at connecting the dots on wind shifts. We had all different variation of breezes, some light days and some heavier but our strongest tactic was connecting the breeze. Especially on the stadium day.”

IRC 1, which featured a three-boat battle between TP52s, was won by Steve and Heidi Benjamin’s Spookie (South Norwalk, Conn.), with Jim Swartz’s Vesper (Park City, Utah) in second and Richard Cohen’s Phoenix (New York, N.Y.) in third.

NYYC Rear Commodore Bill Ketcham (Greenwich, Conn.) started the regatta on fire, his J/44 Maxine winning the first four races in IRC 3. But a 10th in Race 5 put the lead back into play for Craig Albrecht’s Avalanche (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and Larry Landry’s White Witch (Newport, R.I). After two races today the difference between the three boats’ overall scores was just half a point, with Ketcham taking the class and Avalanche winning the tiebreaker for second.

The Swan 42 class competed for its 10th National Championship at 2016 Race Week at Newport. John Hele (Newport, R.I.) has sailed in nearly all of them, but despite always being among the boats to beat, he had only won it once before. This year he added his second national title to his resume, which includes two wins in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup. With just five veteran boats competing, the competition was extremely tight.

“Our plan was to average second,” he said. “We did a little better than that, but it was tough to the very end. I think the teamwork on our team was excellent, we got around the corners better and that really helps out. Just a great fun week and though the fleet was smaller, it wasn’t any less competitive.”

Other classes competing at 2016 Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex include the J/88, which was won by Douglas Newhouse’s team on Yonder (Newport, R.I.) and the M32 catamaran class, which sailed a remarkable 19 races.

What was looking like a tremendous showdown between Michael Dominguez’ Bronco (Barrington, R.I.) and Ron O’Hanley’s Escape Velocity (Salem, Mass.)–both of which started the day tied on points–ended early when an incident between the two boats forced both to retire for the day. Bronco was awarded redress for the remainder of the day’s races and won the regatta.

The ORC Club class, a new addition to Race Week at Newport, was won by Brian Cunha’s IRC 55 Irie (Newport, R.I.) with Alfred Van Liew and David Brodsky’s 52-year-old Odyssey (Middletown, R.I.) coming in second.

The biennial multi-class regatta is hosted by the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court and is a highlight of Newport’s busy summer sailing season. Race Week is known for its split format: Classics and multihulls sailed in Part I of the regatta, from July 9-10, while one-design and handicap classes sailing Part II from Wednesday, July 13, to Saturday, July 16, when the regatta will culminated with a Rolex Awards Dinner on the spectacular grounds of Harbour Court.

A sure sign of a popular regatta is its growth from one edition to the next, and sure enough, the 2022  Safe Harbor Race Weekend  in Newport, RI is seeing a 25% jump in registrants over 2021, when it was first introduced to the sailing world. The annual three-day event starts Friday, August 12, and is set to host 62 sailing teams in nine classes aboard boats ranging from 30 to 116 feet in length. The fleet will split into two divisions: Division 1 with racing on Narragansett Bay for ORC, PHRF (A, B & C), Performance Cruising (A & B), and IC37 One-Design classes; and Division 2 with racing on Rhode Island Sound for Superyacht classes (A & B). Venue hosts are Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, Safe Harbor New England Boatworks, and Safe Harbor Jamestown Boatyard, with Safe Harbor organizing the social activities ashore and Premiere Racing, a renowned regatta management team, managing the on-water competition.

“Safe Harbor Race Weekend is a chance for sailors to enjoy three unforgettable days of shoreside events, revelries and racing excitement at Safe Harbor locations in Newport, Portsmouth and Jamestown, Rhode Island,” said Safe Harbor President  Rives Potts  (Westbrook, Conn.), an accomplished racing sailor who has registered his 48-foot classic yacht   Carina  in the regatta.  “Participants and their guests will be treated to a host of festivities including a Friday evening Opening Dinner presented by BMW and a celebratory Saturday night ‘Talk of the Town’ Crew Party presented by X Shore.” According to the event’s social schedule, Friday’s event at Safe Harbor New England Boatworks offers panoramic sunset views of Narragansett Bay and casual coastal cuisine, while Saturday’s event at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard features live music and a mariner’s feast.

yacht week newport

Potts conceded that as memorable as these shoreside opportunities promise to be – and with no doubt, they left indelible impressionslast year – they are secondary to the assurance of good, quality racing on the water. “First and foremost, it’s about the competition,” he said, adding that there is something for everyone to enjoy, including multiple windward-leeward courses on two days for ORC and PHRF; a single navigator’s course on each of two days for Performance Cruising classes; and an “Around Prudence Island Race” for those classes to enjoy (weather permitting) on one day. The IC37 class will race windward/leeward courses all three days on Narragansett Bay, while the Superyachts will race navigator’s courses on Rhode Island Sound all three days.

“All but two of last year’s champions are returning,” said Potts, “which is another testimony to the regatta’s strong foothold going into its second year.”

A Favored Few to Watch

Last year’s ORCand overall winner JimMadden (Newport Beach, Calif.) will sail again in  ORC  with his same seasoned crew aboard his Carkeek 47  Stark Raving Mad . “We had some great, competitive racing at last year’s inaugural event and are looking forward to some exciting and even  more  competitive racing this year,” he said. “We are expecting the ORC competition (currently with five boats) to be intense. The 52-footers  Vesper   (David Team, Newport Beach, Calif.) and  Fox (Victor Wild, San Diego, Calif.) will be very tough to beat. We have our work cut out for us to do well.”

Certain to play out with tight racing will be the contest in the 11-boat  IC37  class, which comes new to the regatta this year. “Safe Harbor Race Weekend will be the fourth regatta of five in the IC37 Summer Series,” said Steve Liebel (Tampa, Fla.), who with his boat  New Wave  won the 2022 IC37 National Championship held here in July as part of the New York Yacht Club’s Race Week at Newport, “so all of the teams will be looking for every point possible to take into our final regatta of the season, the IC37 North American Championship (scheduled for this September in Newport).”

yacht week newport

Two of last year’s winners from separate PHRF classes – Joe Brito’s (Bristol, RI) J/121  Incognito  and Mark and Cory Sertl’s (Rochester, N.Y./Jamestown, R.I.) Farr 30  Das Blau Max , will meet head-to-head in the ten-boat  PHRF B  class.  “ As to our expectations, we are just hoping for good breeze,” said Mark Sertl, who added that in addition to wife Cory, daughter Katja plus two old friends from Rochester and two other local long-time team members will comprise  Das Blau Max ’s crew. “In handicap racing, with such a diverse class, each dog will have its day. Being the smallest boat in the class, we need to get off the line with a lane and then play lane management until the boats spread out.”

Hawk , the Evelyn 32 owned by Richard Barker and his daughter Katie Barker (Newport, R.I.), will return to the eight-boat  PHRF C  class, which it won last year.  “ As in all regattas, the lineups change and the competitors are in many cases different, as are the weather and sailing conditions,” said Richard Barker, “so we hope we can perform well and take the results as they come. Winning last year was hard-fought against the best competition we faced all season. We of course would love to repeat; however, looking down the list of PHRF competitors I see many of the best sailors and boats from Narragansett Bay.”

John Santa’s (Southport, Conn.) Swan 46  Galadriel  returns as defending champion in the seven-boat  Performance Cruising Spinnaker A  class. “The racing is point-to-point but it’s not in a straight line and it’s not around buoys,” said  Galadriel ’s skipper Stephen DeVoe (Jamestown, R.I.) about the navigator’s courses that distinguish this class from most of the others. “It’s around government marks and typically we have a good bit of upwind and downwind work, so it makes it fun.” DeVoe added that also fun is the family aspect; his daughter, son-in-law and grandkids sail on the boat as does Santa’s grandkids and son, Devin, whom DeVoe calls the team’s secret weapon. “Everyone on the boat is either a Santa or DeVoe, and that’s between nine and 13 crew, however many show up!”

The Superyachts have expanded their competition schedule this year to three days, up from two last year, and will use handicap ratings, size and sailing characteristics to split into their two classes. Hap Fauth’s (Minneapolis, Minn./Naples, Fla.) custom HJB  Whisper , at 119’ and the largest yacht in the regatta, looks to be a frontrunner for the four-boat  Superyacht B  class, as it finished second last year to  PERSEUS ^ 3 , which was unable to return.

“It’s more competitive to sail in two classes where all the boats are more similar in size,” said  Whisper ’s Captain Simon Davison (Newport, RI), “and especially on these large boats where you need to pull so many people together, three races make the effort worthwhile.  Whisper ’s crew (numbering into the 20s) is largely Corinthian as opposed to all paid professionals, which means friendly rivalry and having a good time are the most important things.”

In its second year, Safe Harbor Race Weekend has grown in stature as well as size, attracting hundreds of sailors from across the country and on a healthy variety of boats while striking a perfect balance of racing and social options. With all of that, it has caused quite a stir on the waterfront and a buzz around town. Sure enough, it has established itself as a classic.

Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex – Day 2

On a day when it paid to be quick and nimble, no fleet was more of both of those things than the Persico 69F foiling monohulls. While every other fleet in the 13th edition of Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex had to battle just to get in a race or two before a cell of strong thunderstorms rolled across the East Passage of Narragansett Bay and sent everyone running for shore, the foiling 21-footers left the beach at a leisurely hour, banged out six sharp races and were packed up well before the storms passed overhead.

And among the six Persico 69F youth teams competing at Race Week, none were quicker or nimbler on Day 2 than the Helvetia by Normandy Elite Team from La Rochelle, France, skippered by Clement Michel.

“We are very happy with the second day,” says crew member Lola Billy. “It was a good day. We won four races and we took the lead in the overall ranking. Our speed was very good, the starts not as good. It’s very important to keep up the speed of the boat to fly as quickly as possible. Not all boats were flying, so it was very important to build the speed of the boat to fly before the other teams.”

Today—when opportunity had to be seized when it was presented—was perhaps a microcosm of the situation facing Persico 69F class. The recent announcement of the conditions for Women’s America’s Cup and the Youth America’s Cup has placed a focus on the process of getting youth and female sailors more experience in foiling boats. The Persico 69F finds it itself uniquely positioned to provide a bridge between singlehanded foilers such as the Moth and the AC40, which will be used by each America’s Cup team for training and then for the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup competitions.

“The main objective of the company that gave life to Persico 69F was to create an easy foiling boat, safe and good looking, with high performance but suitable for different targets: youngsters, owners, professional sailors,” says Giorgio Benussi, co-founder and parter of the company that created 69F. “It is clear, looking at our path, that we would like one day to aspire to enter Olympic classes, but it is now time to stay well grounded, and we are therefore glad to be currently considered the test bench for teams that aspire to enter programs such as that of the America’s Cup and of other high prestige foiling classes that have been out there for much more time than us: let’s not forget we are only at our second season of racing! And many more will come.”

Opportunity was also a key concept in Michelle Warner’s decision to buy a VX One. Warner (below, far left) and her team strung together a second, fifth and first in the 16-boat class and will start Day 3 of the regatta with a 1-point lead over first and a 5-point advantage over a trio of boats tied for third.

“I’m a pretty good sailor, but I’m not a great sailor and so to get on boats was always kind of difficult because I’m little and I’m a little bit older,” says Warner, from Boulder, Colo. “So I was always like, ‘Screw it, I’m gonna buy my own boat.’ So I bought my boat, I’m lucky enough to have people that like to sail it because it’s so much fun. The two guys that I’m sailing with, they’re both Waszp sailors and they’re constantly going, ‘This boat’s like a Waszp in that it does this and that,’ so it’s a fun boat to sail.'”

It’s also a fun fleet, with a healthy mix of female and male sailors and a lot of movement up and down the fleet, be it during a race, during a regatta or during a season.

“There’s so many good sailors,” says Warner. “There was one race where we started like 10th and we came in second. There was another race where we started in third and came in first and there was another race where we started first and we came in fifth. It’s not that automatic thinking like in other fleets, ‘Yeah, we got the great start, we’re gonna win.’ It’s not there.”

Tomorrow, the Race Committee has divided the 90 boats competing in Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex into two groups, with the IC37 and VX One one-design classes doing buoy races starting at 11 am while the remainder of the classes will start a short distance race at 12:30 pm, hopefully after the expected sea breeze has filled in. Racing will run through Saturday when the regatta concludes with a sumptuous Rolex Awards Banquet that evening.
