Hands-On: Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Watch Reference 226627 In RLX Titanium

yacht master 42 titanium weight

The visceral experience of wearing the Yacht-Master 42 titanium is very odd for any long-time Rolex fan. Rolex more or less helped create the 20th-century notion that you can often measure the value of a watch by feeling how solid and weighty it is. Rolex watches have never been designed for lightness, so most of them are quite hefty, and beloved for that reason. It is common for someone to admire a precious metal Rolex simply by feeling its mass in the open palm of your hand.

yacht master 42 titanium weight

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 was introduced in 2019 with tones very similar to this titanium model, but rather in 18k white gold and on a black Rolex Oysterflex strap. A yellow gold version was eventually added, and it seemed as though Rolex’s largest Yacht-Master was destined to be a precious-metal-only product. The 2023 226627 Yacht-Master 42 changes that paradigm by adding in a full grade 5 titanium case and matching bracelet to the product family. This is what people should consider the first “wearable” Rolex watch produced from titanium.

Even though Rolex uses the same grade 5 titanium as other brands, it focuses a lot on surface finishing and polishing for this timepiece. Rolex uses a sort of deep-grain engraving, which is somewhat different from the same effect on steel. Titanium as a color is also a bit darker than the comparatively bright 904L steel that most other (non-precious metal) Rolex sport watches are made out of. Titanium does scratch, and I asked Rolex about the service plan for the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium. To make a long story short, Rolex will offer the same “case refresh” service for its titanium watches as it does for its steel and gold watches, though in reality, Rolex will have to use some special processes to polish titanium so that it looks fresh and new again. “RLX titanium” is really just Rolex’s way of indicating that it polishes and finishes titanium metal differently from other brands (according to Rolex).

yacht master 42 titanium weight

Other than being in titanium with the matching bracelet, there isn’t too much new here. The Yacht-Master 42 case is 42mm-wide and has similar proportions as other watches in the larger Oyster Perpetual watch. The case is water resistant to 100 meters, and around the dial is a uni-directional rotating bezel with a matte-black ceramic insert that matches the matte-dark-gray tone of the Yacht-Master 42 dial.

Inside the watch is the Rolex in-house-made caliber 3235 automatic movement that operates at 4Hz with about 70 hours of power reserve. The movement offers the time with date and on the sapphire crystal is a Rolex “cyclops” magnifier lens. Titanium is considered by many engineers to be the perfect material for wristwatch cases. While I don’t think it is possible to ever determine “bests” in regard to an emotional product, it is true that you can easily enjoy the Yacht-Master 42 in titanium from purely a tool watch perspective. The lighter weight and large size give this 42mm-wide Rolex an interesting and desirable personality. It also makes us wonder whether or not there will be more titanium Rolex watches in the future. Possibly some, but I don’t think that Rolex, primarily a maker of conspicuous jewelry-style watches, will heavily focus on a material that will not hold a high polish as nicely as steel, gold, or platinum watches.

yacht master 42 titanium weight

For watch lovers and Rolex collectors, there really is a lot of novelty to wearing a Rolex watch in titanium simply because most people haven’t ever done so before. The sister brand Tudor has had the Pelagos, which, for a while, was really the more sober equivalent of this Rolex Yacht-Master 42 226627. It is also much less expensive, but it doesn’t have the iconic Oyster Perpetual case shape and the famous Submariner-style dial that this Yacht-Master does.

While the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium raises a lot of interesting philosophical questions about what Rolex should and shouldn’t be doing, the product will be a commercial success given the current latent demand for high-end titanium sport watches and anything even remotely interesting from Rolex. Rolex has made it clear that production of the titanium Yacht-Master 42 is going to be limited in scope, in large part because there are so many pieces of titanium in the case, and especially the bracelet, that all need to bear precisely matching polishes and finishes. I don’t imagine that this watch is easy for Rolex to make, but we do know that Rolex could increase production of titanium watches if it ever wanted to. Price for the very interesting and comfortable reference 226627 Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium is $14,050 USD . Learn more at the Rolex watches website here .

Rolex doesn’t have much of a reputation for innovation. While many brands push modern designs and flashy novelties, the crown is the master of incremental changes, tweaking its designs every few years in a slow, continuous act of refinement. That said, when Rolex does do something out of the ordinary, as was the case with the new Yacht-Master 42 reference 226627 , it really makes a splash. At first glance just another run of the mill Rolex sport watch, this 42mm 2023 release added the second all- titanium model to the Rolex collection. Let’s take a closer look!

rolex-yacht-master-226627

The Rolex Yacht-Master debuted in 1992 as something of a modernized Submariner. Believed to originally have been intended as merely an update to the Submariner, it quickly became clear that the Yacht-Master deserved to be its own model with its own distinct personality. A luxurious, precious metal variant of the classic Submariner tool watch, the Yacht-Master had a unique identity and quickly became a popular staple in the collection. The updated look featured an insert that was permanently affixed to the bezel (as opposed to the floating insert found on the Submariner), the handset was wider, the dial had maxi style indexes, and of course, precious metal was standard.

Since then, the Yacht-Master collection has expanded to include a number of additional references. In 1994, Rolex added a midsize 35mm variant as well as a lady’s 29mm piece. In 2015, Rolex added an Everose gold model paired with an Oysterflex rubber strap, and in 2019, Rolex debuted the modern Yacht-Master, resized to 42mm with an Oysterflex strap. However today, we are talking about the most recent news in the Yacht-Master department, the 42mm titanium Yacht-Master that made its debut in 2023. As its first mass-market titanium watch (yes the Deepsea Challenge came first, but that was a super limited niche piece), the watch was a real surprise coming from the normally conservative brand.

Design Details

Beyond the case and bracelet material, this Yacht-Master was designed to remind you of the precious metal Yacht-Masters that Rolex has produced the last few years. This watch features the maxi dial, rounded edges, and overall luxurious feel that the model is known for, and yet, it is a very different animal. The matte look of the brushed titanium paired with a matte black ceramic bezel, black dial, and white lume plots fuse to create a stealth presence on the wrist. The more muted tones of the bezel compared with, say, a Submariner, really set this piece apart.

rolex-yacht-master-226627

While the aesthetics help set the stage for this watch, the feel on the wrist tells a slightly different story. Whereas a 42mm Rolex should be a substantial piece on the wrist, this titanium variant weighs a mere 100 grams – which is a blessing or a curse depending on who you ask. If you’re looking for the reassuring heft of a luxury sports watch, this may not be for you. If, on the other hand, you find a heavy watch imposing or uncomfortable, there is finally an option for you from a brand that hasn’t historically offered much in the way of lightweight pieces (sure, Rolex has the Deepsea Challenge, but few wrists are capable of wielding that thing).

The bracelet on this watch is the classic Oyster style that we have come to know and love from Rolex, meaning that there’s nothing particularly aggressive or polarizing about the execution. If appreciate titanium, you are going to like this watch quite a bit.

rolex-yacht-master-226627

Alongside the other recent releases from Rolex (a Daytona with an exhibition caseback, puzzle and emoji dial Day-Dates, bright colored OPs, etc), a titanium model actually seems fairly subdued. Maybe this is because, as an industry, we are adjusting to a more adventurous Rolex than we were historically used to. Interesting to imagine what else might be in the pipeline…

Inner Workings

The ref. 226627 Yacht-Master is powered by Rolex’s automatic-winding caliber 3235 movement. The 3235 was introduced in 2015 as Rolex’s updated automatic winding movement with a date and came with an elongated 70-hour power reserve alongside other improvements including a longer mainspring and thinner barrel walls. The movement is accurate within +/- 2 seconds per day and is generally regarded as one of the most robust and easiest to service in the industry. The movement is much higher tech than previous calibers from Rolex and came as a welcome upgrade that brought Rolex watches in line with the standard longer power reserve that is now the norm in the industry.

Versus the Competition

There are a number of alternatives to the Titanium Yacht-Master that you should consider if you’re in the market. While the Yacht-Master was originally intended to be a more luxurious model from Rolex, in titanium, it has a much sportier presence. Those seeking the more luxurious feel would likely gravitate towards one of the precious metal variants, like any of the the yellow, rose, or white gold 42mm Yacht-Master’s Rolex offers. Additionally, the brand has a number of special exotic dial variants, including a tiger’s eye Yacht Master that is worth a look.

yacht master 42 titanium weight

If you are searching for a more affordable titanium diver, the Tudor Pelagos 39 is quite difficult to beat. For a fraction of the price, you gain access to the lightweight tool watch club. The Pelagos is one of Tudor’s most popular watches today and brings all the capabilities of a hardcore diver without breaking the bank.

yacht master 42 titanium weight

Finally, I’d recommend the hardest core diver that Rolex has produced in a long time, the Deepsea Challenge . Also fashioned from titanium, this monstrous piece supplies a depth rating of not one meter less than 11,000. There’s something reassuring about knowing that you will die long before your watch will. The Deepsea Challenge was Rolex’s first series-produced titanium watch and, coupled with its impressive specs, it makes for a really unique piece that pays tribute to the brand’s origins as a maker of bulletproof tool watches.

Personality

I picture the Ref. 226627 as a weekend warrior. Titanium is a relatively soft material, but the natural oxidation of the surface over time makes small scratches essentially disappear. This unique quality offers a degree of comfort that you don’t necessarily have with other, “shinier” Rolex models. Additionally, this piece has a casual, non-ostentatious appearance to it. The bezel is matte finished rather than high gloss ceramic; the titanium has a robust, utilitarian gray hue to it that stainless steel lacks; the maxi markers look stronger and less delicate. These aesthetic choices add up to a look and feel that is reassuring on the wrist. There’s little concern for how the piece will hold up and it’s clearly a watch that you can put on and forget about.

Final Thoughts

The ref. 226627 Rolex Yacht-Master is many things. On the one hand, it’s part of the brand’s luxurious diver model family. On the other hand, it’s a titanium diver that packs a 100 meter water resistance and a James Bond, Jason Bourne-esque persona. Rolex as a brand is truly the master of logical paradoxes (luxury tool watches anyone?). A purpose built tool that is constructed with refinement and luxury as core priorities shouldn’t work. And yet, as Rolex has shown time and time again, it does, and effortlessly so. The Rolex Yacht-Master in titanium is just the latest in the brand’s longstanding tradition for crafting luxurious tool watches that deserve a place in your watch roll.

Rolex’s Titanium Yacht-Master 42 Review: The Game-Changer

rolex yacht-master 42 review

Table of Contents

In the world of luxury watches , the new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 is a study in contrasts—nautical yet luxurious, familiar yet distinct. Introduced as part of a line that has often lived in the shadow of the iconic Submariner , this particular model breaks the mold with its RLX Titanium build and unique features.

It’s a distinct shift that has long-time fans and new admirers debating its merits. Is this the watch that finally elevates the Yacht-Master collection to legendary status?

If you’ve ever found yourself torn between the sporty appeal and luxury essence of Rolex watches, the Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 demands your attention. Dive into our in-depth Yatch Master 42 review to explore its unique features and find out if this timepiece ticks all the right boxes for you.

rolex yacht-master 42 ref. 226627 case

The Oyster case of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 stands out at 42mm, constructed entirely of RLX titanium. Notably, this isn’t any ordinary titanium. Rolex specifically opts for grade 5 titanium alloy for this model, prized for its extraordinary lightness paired with mechanical robustness and resistance to corrosion.

What sets RLX titanium apart further is its adaptability in the finish. Whether you’re looking at a polished gleam or a satin touch, it conforms to Rolex’s exacting standards. However, it’s worth noting that this high mechanical strength presents a challenge in crafting. To harness its qualities, Rolex had to innovate, integrating specialized production techniques tailored for RLX titanium.

Moreover, this monobloc middle case features a screw-down back and winding crown, embodying Rolex’s commitment to durability and precision engineering. The rotating bezel is bidirectional, complete with a Cerachrom insert matte black ceramic insert bezel, graced with a mirror polish, raised numerals and graduations. This perfectly complements the titanium case, making it an exemplar of maritime luxury.

Function meets form in its winding crown, equipped with Rolex’s Triplock triple waterproofness system. Coupled with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a Cyclops lens over the date, this Titanium YM is waterproof to 100 meters or 330 feet and with a power reserve of up to 70 hours.

The Dial

rolex yacht-master 42 ref. 226627 dial

The dial of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 is more than a display, it’s a testament to horological engineering and aesthetic acumen. Enhanced with Chromalight technology, the matte black dial promises unimpeachable legibility even in the darkest marine abyss. Broad, polished numerals and geometrically distinct hands and markers comprising circles, rectangles, and triangles are filled with luminescent material that emits an enduring glow.

Such meticulous attention to detail reaffirms the watch’s utility, making it an indomitable tool for nocturnal navigation. Paired with its stunning deep black hue, this display adds a layer of mystique that’s equally at home on the high seas or at a black-tie affair.

The Strap/Bracelet

rolex yacht-master 42 ref. 226627 bracelet

Adorning the new Yacht-Master 42 is an Oyster bracelet meticulously forged from RLX titanium, an alchemy of strength and refinement. A legacy creation tracing its roots to the late 1930s, this tri-link wonder stands as an iconic feature within Rolex’s revered Oyster Perpetual series.

The bracelet is enhanced with the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, an ingenious feature that secures your timepiece against accidental openings. It is also equipped with Rolex’s Easylink comfort extension link, offering the wearer the luxury of micro-adjustments for an impeccable fit.

Not to be overlooked, patented ceramic inserts embellish the internal links of this RLX titanium composition. These delicate yet durable additions not only enhance the bracelet’s ergonomic comfort but also significantly elevate its lifespan, epitomizing enduring elegance in horological artistry.

The Movement

rolex 3235 movement

The movement within the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 is a perpetual, mechanical, self-winding system that utilizes Rolex’s own Calibre 3235. This isn’t just any in-house movement; it’s one that assures a precision rate of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing, a feat that outperforms many other luxury timepieces in the market.

When it comes to functionality, this watch features a straightforward, yet highly useful set of capabilities. The central hour, minute, and seconds hands are complemented by an instantaneous date display function with rapid setting and a stop-seconds mechanism for ultra-precise time adjustment.

Underpinning this all is the oscillator, which employs a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers. These features enhance the watch’s durability and performance under different conditions. The bidirectional self-winding Perpetual rotor ensures that the watch remains operational and accurate, even when not manually wound for an extended period.

The Competitive Landscape

These watches are competitors primarily due to their shared characteristics and target market. While not all of them are made of titanium, they share key features such as high water resistance, durable sapphire crystals, and reliable movements:

  • ORIS PROPILOT X CALIBRE 115: Crafted from both Grade 2 and 5 Titanium, this timepiece offers a commendable 100m water resistance and houses a mechanical movement. Its impeccable titanium construction and precision mechanics align harmoniously with the Yacht-Master’s ethos of opulence and artistry.
  • OMEGA SEAMASTER DIVER 300: While its case boasts Grade 2 Titanium, the Seamaster is celebrated for its extraordinary 300m water resistance, automatic movement, and the elegance of a sapphire crystal. It stands as a formidable choice for those who seek a timepiece of enduring strength and style.
  • TUDOR PELAGOS 39: Enveloped in Grade 2 Titanium, this horological masterpiece showcases a robust 200m water resistance and houses an automatic movement. The Pelagos stands as a worthy contender in the realm of luxury sports watches, boasting durability and performance akin to the Yacht-Master.
  • TAG HEUER AQUARACER PROFESSIONAL 300: Boasting a formidable 300m water-resistant case, automatic movement, and the refined allure of a sapphire crystal, the Aquaracer commands attention within the upper echelons of dive watches, despite the absence of titanium in its construction.
  • VACHERON CONSTANTIN OVERSEAS TOURBILLON SKELETON: While featuring Grade 5 titanium, this watch stands out as a luxury option with a tourbillon movement. Its water resistance is lower at 50m, making it more of a statement piece than a diving watch , but it competes in the luxury segment.

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has also been spotted wearing the Rolex Yacht-Master 42. Known for his love of action and adventure, both on-screen and off, Cruise’s choice in wearing this Rolex model underscores its appeal to those who lead high-paced, adventurous lives.

The appearance of this Rolex timepiece on the wrists of individuals of such varied but high-profile backgrounds speaks to the universal appeal and versatility of the Yacht-Master 42.

Why You Should Invest?

Priced at SGD 18,132.17, the Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 represents a new frontier for Rolex, which has historically been associated with weighty, robust deepsea challenge timepieces made from stainless steel or precious metals. When a prototype was seen on the wrist of British competitive sailor Sir Ben Ainslie, the notion of a titanium Rolex suddenly moved from fantasy to reality.

Despite its lighter weight, this doesn’t undermine the watch’s value; it enhances it. The use of grade 5 RLX titanium introduces a level of complexity and craftsmanship that justifies its price tag. Titanium is notoriously difficult to work with, and Rolex has managed to not only manufacture it but also perfect it, maintaining the watch’s renowned durability and resistance.

When looking at Rolex watches as an investment, consider their volatility. The Yacht-Master series exhibits lower volatility, with other Yacht masters like the Rolex 226659 at 7.2% and Rolex 226658 at 4.4%, suggesting more stable value retention. Given the groundbreaking nature of the Titanium Yacht-Master Ref. 226627, its value is likely to appreciate over time. Rolex’s commitment to innovation while maintaining quality will likely make this model a sought-after piece in the future.

Pricing and Availability

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 is priced at SGD 18,132.17 . Given its high-quality craftsmanship, innovative use of RLX titanium, and the brand’s reputation for durability and luxury, this price point is aligned with what one would expect for a timepiece of this caliber.

As for availability, it’s advisable to consult authorized Rolex dealers or reputable online platforms for the most current information. Rolex watches, especially innovative or popular models like this one, can sometimes be difficult to find in stock due to high demand and limited releases.

If you’re considering this tool watch as an investment piece or a functional yet luxurious watch, it’s recommended to act promptly, given the notable personalities already spotted wearing it and its potential for future value appreciation.

The Rolex watch Yacht-Master 42 Ref. 226627 is a groundbreaking entry in Rolex’s esteemed line-up, blending innovation with classic craftsmanship. Its use of RLX titanium and a host of advanced features mark it as a pinnacle of both style and functionality.

OYSTER PERPETUAL YACHT-MASTER 42

yacht master 42 titanium weight

MASTERING LIGHTNESS

Light and robust, the new Yacht-Master 42, in RLX titanium, is the ally of those who revel in freedom. Especially suited to the demands and pressures of competitive sailing, it delivers exceptional performance.

Rolex is presenting a new version of the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. This nautical watch is introduced for the first time in RLX titanium – a particularly strong but lightweight alloy – and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. The new version stands out for its technical satin finish – a satin finish with a visible grain, a feature of Rolex watches in RLX titanium – which extends to the middle case sides, the edges of the bracelet links and the sides of the clasp cover. The chamfered top edges of the middle case lugs have a high-sheen finish, while the crown guard is polished. With its bidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic featuring raised and polished numerals and graduations, the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium remains faithful to the aesthetics of the original model, unveiled in 2019. It is graced with an intense black dial in a fine satin finish, and its Oyster bracelet is equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link. The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the date as well as the hours, minutes and seconds. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

THE CALL OF THE OPEN SEAS Launched in 1992, the Yacht-Master was designed specifically for navigators and skippers. Embodying the rich heritage that has bound Rolex and the world of sailing since the 1950s, this Professional-category watch provides a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style, making it equally at home on and off the water. An emblematic nautical timepiece, it is easily recognized by its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic.

RLX TITANIUM  RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex. Like all titanium alloys, it is especially lightweight and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Another characteristic of RLX titanium is the possibility of working it to give a polished or satin finish according to the brand’s specifications. Its high mechanical strength makes it complex to work with, and the decision to use it has required the introduction of special production processes.

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY CERAMIC Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics for creating monobloc bezels and bezel inserts. Not only are these materials virtually scratchproof, their colours are also of a rare intensity and are resistant to environmental effects. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. Rolex has developed exclusive expertise and innovative manufacturing methods that grant it complete independence in the production of these ceramic components. On the new version of the Yacht-Master 42, the bidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic. Its raised graduations and numerals are first moulded into the ceramic and then polished. The first 15 minutes are graduated minute-by-minute to allow time intervals to be read with great precision. The bezel can also be turned with ease thanks to its knurled edge, which offers excellent grip.

OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS  A paragon of robustness and reliability, the 42 mm Oyster case of the new Yacht-Master 42 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of RLX titanium. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3235  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and has been fitted on this model since its launch in 2019. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.   Calibre 3235 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours.

OYSTER BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42, made from RLX titanium, is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet remains the most universal in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness. The Oyster bracelet of this new version of the Yacht-Master 42 features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is also equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. The Oyster bracelet in RLX titanium also includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

Introducing The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 In RLX Titanium

A prototype surfaced years ago, and now the watch is a reality…on a bracelet..

yacht master 42 titanium weight

Late last year, Rolex released the Deepsea Challenge in its proprietary RLX titanium material. That watch also happened to be 50mm in diameter and basically unwearable for mere mortals. Today another watch enters the RLX fray: The Rolex Yacht-Master 42. We last saw a titanium Yacht-Master on the wrist of Ben Ainslie – the famed sailor. That was years ago, and the watch he was wearing was a prototype on a strap.

Yacht-Master

This new release is a full titanium Yacht-Master 42. That means a titanium case and titanium bracelet – just like the Deepsea Challenge. In terms of aesthetics, the overall design language is everything we have come to expect from the black-Cerachrom bezel YM's of late. That means we get the raised black numerals against a matte ceramic bezel insert. But where the case would normally be a precious metal, now we get this watch in full titanium.

The titanium bracelet is fully brushed (thank you, Rolex) and features the brand's 5mm Easylink extension system.

I had a hunch more titanium was coming, but I also figured we were years away from such a thing. I did not expect a second titanium Rolex mere months after the Deepsea Challenge, and I fully did not expect that watch to be a Yacht-Master. Now that it's here, though, I should have – considering the prototype was known to have existed.

Rolex Yacht-Master

To be honest, the draw here for me is Rolex's decision to put this on a titanium bracelet. It would have been all too easy to throw this on Oysterflex and call it a day. But the choice of a fully-brushed titanium bracelet puts the Yacht-Master firmly in the tool-watch category and makes me more excited about the model than I ever have been before.

Having worn the 42 in white gold, on Oysterflex, the sizing doesn't scare me at all, and this likely will wear even better on the bracelet. Stay tuned for our hands-on impressions – as I can't wait to feel how light this one is.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Ultimate Buying Guide

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 buying guide

First released at Baselworld 2019, the Yacht-Master 42 is the newest and largest addition to the Rolex Yacht-Master lineup. Historically, the Yacht Master collection has been the only Rolex sports model available in multiple sizes; however, until the release of the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659, 40mm was the largest case size available. Despite the fact that the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 introduced a new and larger 42mm case to the collection, at the time of writing, the model is only offered in a single configuration: a 42mm white gold case fitted with a black dial, black ceramic bezel, and matching black Oysterflex bracelet.

At first glance, the Rolex Yacht Master 42 reference 226659 appears very similar to the 40mm Everose gold model that is also fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet. Both watches feature black dials, matte black ceramic bezels with raised polished numerals, black Oysterflex bracelets, and Rolex’s in-house Caliber 3235 movement. However, while the core design of the Yacht-Master 42 is shared with the other Oysterflex Yacht-Master watches, the larger case paired with its toned-down monochromatic color profile makes it immediately distinct, and these small changes come together to make the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 the perfect poster child for the modern Rolex brand.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Oysterflex White Gold 226659

The History of the Rolex Yacht Master 42

Compared to many of Rolex’s other lines of watches, the Yacht-Master is a fairly young collection, having only just joined the brand’s catalog in 1992. While Rolex originally built much of its reputation by producing tough-as-nails tool watches, the brand had already started to make its transition towards becoming an all-out luxury manufacturer by the 1980s, and the Yacht-Master was created as an unapologetically luxurious take on the brand’s classic sports watch.

The Rolex Yacht-Master largely follows the same overall design as the Submariner, but leans more towards the opulent and luxurious side of things, rather than being a purpose-built underwater timing tool. Both the Submariner and the Yacht-Master feature rotating timing bezels, but while the Submariner’s bezel rotates unidirectionally and features a luminous dot at the zero-marker, the Yacht-Master’s moves bi-directionally and omits the luminous dot in favor of an insert crafted from either solid gold, platinum, or black ceramic. Similarly, all Rolex Yacht-Master watches feature precious metals somewhere in their construction. Even the most humble models that are largely crafted from stainless steel feature solid platinum bezels, and while the bezel insert on the reference 226659 is built from black ceramic, the watch itself is crafted from solid 18k white gold.

Initially, the Rolex Yacht-Master was exclusively offered in solid yellow gold and with a 40mm case. However, over the years, the collection expanded to include other case sizes and materials including both two-tone and Rolesium (a combination of stainless steel and platinum) references. Both a 29mm Lady Yacht-Master and 35mm Midsize Yacht-Master were previously offered alongside the standard 40mm model, but these two smaller versions were ultimately discontinued in favor of the Midsize Yacht-Master 37.

With that in mind, Baselworld 2019 marked the arrival of both an all-new Yacht-Master size and a new material option for the collection. With the launch of the reference 226659, not only was the Rolex Yacht-Master now available with a 42mm case diameter for the first time in its history but it was also offered with a solid 18k white gold case – something that was previously not an option within the standard Yacht-Master collection. While the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 marked a major step forward for the collection, the new 42mm case size is exclusively available for the ref. 226659, and the watch is only available in one single configuration. Given that the Yacht-Master 42 has only been on the market for a couple of years, many collectors speculate that the solid 18k white gold ref. 226659 is just the first of many 42mm Rolex Yacht-Master watches.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 226659 White Gold 42mm Oysterflex

Rolex Yacht Master 42 Defining Elements

For the most part, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is a larger, white gold version of the Everose Yacht-Master 40 that is also on an Oysterflex bracelet. However, the ref. 226659 does possess a number of unique traits that make it immediately identifiable and separate it from all other Rolex watches.

42mm White Gold Case

Probably the single most defining feature of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is its 42mm case crafted from solid 18k white gold. Not only is this unique because the ref. 226659 is the only 42mm Yacht-Master model, but it also holds the distinction of being the only one that has ever been constructed from white gold. Over the course of the Yacht-Master’s history, it has been created in full 18k yellow gold, Yellow Rolesor (stainless steel and yellow gold), Rolesium (stainless steel and platinum), full 18k Everose gold, and Everose Rolesor (stainless steel and Everose gold). Additionally, there is even a version of the 44mm Yacht-Master II regatta timer that is built from white gold with a platinum bezel, but the reference 226659 is the only iteration of the classic Yacht-Master to be offered in full 18k white gold.

Black Cerachrom Bezel

Just like the 37mm and 40mm Everose gold Rolex Yacht-Master models that are also fitted with Oysterflex bracelets, the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 receives a bidirectional timing bezel with an insert that is crafted from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic material. The black ceramic insert is given a matte-sandblasted texture, with raised graduations that feature a high-polish finish for improved contrast. Despite having both a different case size and being made from different materials, the matte black ceramic insert on the Yacht-Master 42 instantly unites it with the rest of the Oysterflex bracelets Yacht-Master watches in Rolex’s portfolio.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Oysterflex 42mm White Gold 226659

Oysterflex Bracelet

The Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is quite possibly the most over-engineered rubber strap in the world – however, to call it a “rubber strap” is a bit misleading. Rolex specifically refers to it as a bracelet within its catalog because the elastomer strap features a flexible metal core for optimum durability and longevity. Additionally, the underside of the strap features a comfort pad that elevates the strap slightly off the wrist, better distributing the weight of the watch and promoting airflow and breathability.

One of the more interesting details about how Rolex has chosen to structure its catalog is that the Oysterflex bracelet (seemingly the most sporty and least formal option) is exclusively equipped to the brand’s solid gold models. Whether fitted to a Daytona, Sky-Dweller, or Yacht-Master watch, all of the Oysterflex-equipped models are crafted from solid 18k gold (either yellow, white, or Everose). At the time of writing, the Oysterflex bracelet is only found on the full 18k Everose gold Yachtmaster 40 and Yacht-Master 37 watches, along with the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42.

Rolex Caliber 3235 Movement

Despite being 2mm larger than the current Yacht-Master 40, the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 is powered by the exact same Caliber 3235 movement. Designed and manufactured entirely in-house by Rolex, the Cal. 3235 represents the brand’s latest generation of date-displaying mechanical movements and can be found in a number of other date-displaying Rolex watches, including all-time classics like the Datejust and the Submariner.

The Caliber 3235 movement is based around Rolex’s new Chronergy escapement, which features a skeletonized structure for improved efficiency. When combined with Rolex’s proprietary blue Parachrom hairspring and a redesigned gear train and mainspring barrel, the Caliber 3235 offers users an increased power reserve of 70 hours, which represents a significant step up from the 48-hour reserve offered by its predecessor. Additionally, despite its improved efficiency, the Rolex Cal. 3235 movement adheres to the same incredibly stringent ‘Superlative Chronometer’ precision standards, which permit a maximum timekeeping deviation of -2/+2 seconds per day.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 Price and Availability

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 has only been around for a couple of years, so it is still in production and available for purchase from retailers and boutiques. However, as anyone who is familiar with Rolex watches will tell you, finding the model you want brand-new and available for immediate sale is virtually impossible and for many highly popular references, there is no way to buy a brand-new Rolex without spending a significant amount of time on a waiting list. As a result of this lack of availability on a retail level, many buyers turn to the secondary market, where they can add a Rolex Yachtmaster 42 ref. 226659 to their collections without the wait.

How Much is a Rolex Yacht-Master 42?

As of 2021, the retail price for a brand-new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is $28,900, which represents a $1,600 premium compared to its 40mm Everose gold counterpart. However, due to the fact that the white gold Yacht-Master 42 cannot be purchased at a retail level without being on a waiting list, pre-owned prices exceed their brand-new values and you can expect to pay a premium of several thousand dollars if you wish to skip the line and add one to your collection today.

Where to Buy a Rolex Yacht-Master 42

Since the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is still in production, you can technically still buy it brand-new from Rolex retailers and boutiques – just as long as you are willing to wait out the cue. A similar story exists for most of the popular modern Rolex models; however, compared to the steep premiums that many of the brand’s stainless steel sports watches trade hands for on the open market (which can frequently reach values in excess of 100% above their brand-new retail prices), the comparatively reasonable premium of a few thousand dollars to skip the line for a reference 226659 Yachtmaster 42 means that buyers often opt for a pre-owned example, where availability is immediate and guaranteed.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42: A Modern Luxury Sports Watch

Rolex may have originally built much of its legendary reputation by building tough and reliable sport and tool watches, but the brand’s days as a manufacturer of utilitarian timekeeping devices have long since passed. These days, Rolex is an all-out luxury brand and it is arguably the single most famous luxury label in the entire world. The thought of a military branch supplying its troops with Rolex Submariner watches has become almost comical given that countless people all around the globe are unable to buy a Submariner, despite being more than willing to pay full retail price for one. In fact, the Rolex Submariner is so in-demand that most people are willing to pay far more than the brand-new retail price, just to skip the multi-year waiting list and add one to their collections.

Despite Rolex’s transition towards becoming a luxury manufacturer, it has never stopped producing reliable and finely crafted sports watches. However, the nature of its sports watches has certainly evolved to take on a more luxury-oriented approach, just like the brand’s positioning within the greater watch market. Rolex was producing sports watches back in the 1950s and 1960s and although its products were always considered to be premium timepieces, they were hardly regarded as luxury items, let alone status symbols.

These days, Rolex sports watches are some of the most iconic and desirable luxury timepieces in existence, and wearing one has become a universally recognized symbol of success and personal accomplishment. As a result of the implicit connotations that they carry, modern Rolex sports watches need to do more than just be tough and reliable; they also need to offer a bit of flash and match the opulent and exclusive image of Rolex itself.

The Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 is the perfect poster-child for the modern Rolex brand. Its monochromatic color profile paired with its matte black ceramic bezel and black Oysterflex bracelet makes the watch inherently casual and sporty, and at first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was a humble stainless steel model. However, at its core, the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is a $30k solid gold Rolex. Wearing a Rolex watch has become a universally recognized status symbol, but Rolex is not a brand known for making over-the-top, statement pieces. The white gold Yacht-Master 42 is the perfect statement piece for those that do not want to make a statement, and that is precisely why the reference 226659 is the perfect poster-child for the modern Rolex brand.

Rolex’s Most Important Release of 2023 Was a Long Time Coming

The use of titanium makes the Yacht-Master 42 feel sportier than ever.

rolex yacht master titanium 42

By Zen Love

Rolex finally did it: it made a full-titanium watch that’s actually practical for everyday wear. Meet the all-new Yacht-Master 42, a de facto successor to the titanium Deepsea Challenge announced last year, albeit slightly less gargantuan. Here are the most important takeaways.

Titanium Matters. Here’s Why

A titanium Yacht-Master has been rumored since Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie was spotted wearing a prototype in 2021 . That watch was on a strap but the new Yacht-Master comes on a full titanium bracelet. Like with its other metals, such as Oystersteel, Rolex gives its titanium a special name, RLX titanium, which it describes as a “grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex.”

ben ainslie and rolex yachtmaster 42 titanium

Titanium is currently a hot material in watchmaking and loved by watch fans for myriad desirable qualities. Being lightweight makes titanium watches highly comfortable to wear, but being harder than steel had long made it a difficult material to work with. As production methods have improved it’s become more common and popular, but the stamp of approval from Rolex will give titanium another level of legitimacy, hype and weight (so to speak) among watchmakers and collectors — it might also (eventually) signal more titanium watches from the brand in the future.

From Prestige to Purpose

The new watch also seems to take the Yacht-Master collection in a new direction. The sailing-oriented watch was long something like a fancy, more lifestyle-focused version of the relatively sporty and serious tool-watch vibes of the Submariner. It was only available in precious metals.

rolex yacht master 42 in titanium

With a titanium case and bracelet paired to a monochromatic black dial and bezel, however, the Yacht-Master is a lot more like a genuine tool watch — which feels a bit like the brand returning to its roots. The way it tested the watch on an Olympic athlete also feels like the old-school Rolex many of its ardent fans admire most. It’s always felt a lot like a Submariner, but producing it in a special metal (as well as its bezel’s relief markers) helps differentiate it.

It Won’t Be Cheap or Easy to Get

Titanium might not be a precious metal but it’s certainly a premium material, meaning it easily fits in with the Yacht-Master’s higher price tier. Like other Rolex sport watches, you might not be able to walk into a boutique and buy one right away (though this is hopefully changing soon ). Its nominal retail price is 13,400 Swiss francs or about $14,600.

MODEL AVAILABILITY

All Rolex watches are assembled by hand with the utmost care to ensure exceptional quality. Such high standards naturally restrict Rolex production capacity and, at times, the demand for Rolex watches outpaces this capacity.

Therefore, the availability of certain models may be limited. New Rolex watches are exclusively sold by Official Rolex Jewelers, who receive regular deliveries and independently manage the allocation and sales of watches to customers.

Ben Bridge Jeweler is proud to be part of the worldwide network of Official Rolex Jewelers and can provide information on the availability of Rolex watches

Light and robust, the new Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium is the ally of those seeking freedom of movement. Especially suited to the demands and pressures of competitive sailing, it puts watchmaking excellence at the service of sporting performance.   The Yacht-Master 42 is the second watch in RLX titanium released by Rolex after the Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge, confirming that lightness is a quality to be taken seriously..

The New Rolex Yacht-Master 42 RLX Titanium 226627

After teasing the crowds, the coveted model finally emerges..

yacht master 42 titanium weight

First noticed in 2021 as a prototype on the wrist of Olympic champion sailor Sir Ben Ainslie being tested in real-life conditions for which it was developed and built, the titanium Yacht-Master 42 has just been made officially part of the Rolex collection. Here’s the new and highly anticipated YM 42 reference 226627.

yacht master 42 titanium weight

The new Yacht-Master is presented in a 42mm case manufactured from a proprietary titanium alloy named RLX Titanium, with polished, high-sheen and technical satin-finished surfaces. It features a signature bidirectional rotating bezel with a matte black Cerachrom insert with raised numerals and indices to allow sailors accurate timing of their manoeuvres.

The familiar intense black dial design is about clarity, with large hour markers and hands coated in a luminous material for easy reading in low-light conditions. The new reference is powered by Rolex’s in-house calibre 3235, certified as a Superlative Chronometer. It has passed rigorous tests for precision (-2/+2 seconds a day) and reliability. The movement has a 70-hour power reserve, and the watch is water-resistant up to 100m. The new Yacht-Master 42 has an Oyster bracelet made from RLX titanium with ceramic inserts for better flexibility, with the Oysterlock safety clasp. The bracelet features the Easylink extension link to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5mm.

The Rolex Yacht-Master was first introduced in 1992 and has since become one of Rolex’s most popular and iconic models. Designed for sailing enthusiasts and those who appreciate the nautical lifestyle without setting foot on board, the Yacht-Master comes in several sizes and materials, including stainless steel, gold, and platinum. The model is available in several variations, including the Yacht-Master II; the latter features a regatta timer, a countdown timer designed explicitly for yacht racing. The new Yacht-Master RLX Titanium marks a symbolic and welcomed return of Rolex to the times when sports and professional watches were made for real-life activities without the “luxury” component.

Hands-On Debut: Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in Titanium RLX

yacht master 42 titanium weight

First introduced in 2019, Rolex is taking a new approach to the Yacht-Master 42 series, this time opting for a new case and bracelet material: titanium RLX. This grade 5 titanium alloy is exclusive to Rolex and has previously only been used for the Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge presented last year. According to the brand, the extremely robust and corrosion-resistant metal makes the watch, which is designed for sailing, 30 percent lighter than other titanium watches.

The combination of polished, high-sheen, and technical satin finishes illustrates the brand’s prowess in finishing techniques. Together, they produce a subtle blend of textures and light, the gleaming polished surface of the crown guard and the lustrous high-sheen on the top edges of the lugs are radiant. Contrastingly, the matte surface created by technical satin finishing – with its pronounced grain – is visible on the case and Oyster bracelet. The bracelet is equipped with the Rolex Easylink 5mm comfort extension link.

In terms of design, the new version remains faithful to the original model presented in 2019. As in previous releases, it features a bidirectional bezel with a Cerachrom insert in matte black ceramic with raised and polished numerals and graduations.

The bezel frames the black dial that offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, thanks to its Chromalight display. The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow. Inside the watch is the manufacture caliber 3235.

Pricing for the updated Rolex Yachet-Master 42 is marked at $14,500.

Love this piece from Rolex ! Cunningly it is not available as a 40mm so as to not hurt the sales of the platinum bezel YM’s…

The first ROLEX I really liked in years. It looks good, the material is about time. Owned at least three to four ROLEXEs, but not one was accurate out of the box. I also own three GP’s and two IWCs, a Jaeger, a Cartier, all are accurate out of the box. Go figure. I bought my first ROLEX at Cartier on Fifth Ave in the late sixties, branded with both ROLEX and Cartier label. It cost $190 with leather, not metal, bracelet. The ROLEX HQ was next door. I had to take the watch to it to get the time adjusted.

After all these years of no real change to fire one’s interest, other than the subject of the article above, ROLEX in my mind has become boring, as well as overpriced for the product they serve the public.

I am amazed though at the advertising prowess of the company everywhere on the planet, which must add at least $2000-3000 to each watch sold. That means that each watch sold is actually worth that amount less than the sale price. I’d rather put m money into the watch than the advertising company’s pockets.

I urge anyone reading this to pick up an IWC Ingeneur AGM ceramic series watch, check the back for the movement, and make his comparison to the value against the ROLEX of his choice. You’ll immediately see what I speak of. Incidentally, my father was a master watchmaker.

I agree with you it is a long time awaited stunning piece. Of course, titanium being my metal of choice, I might not be objective…LOL You really had an unfortunate series of bad luck with your Rollies. May I ask if you have had any recent iterations? Because at my house, the recent models all keep time like…”a swiss clock”…with about 1 second or less per day, constant months after months. You are privileged that your dad was a master watchmaker.

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 in 18 ct white gold with a black dial and an Oysterflex bracelet.

The oysterflex bracelet, highly resistant and durable.

The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed by Rolex and patented, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade.

The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 ct white gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed by the brand and patented. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.

18 ct white gold

Commitment to excellence

By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 ct gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 ct gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white.

They are made with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and shaped with the same painstaking attention to quality. Rolex's commitment to excellence begins at the source.

Bidirectional Rotatable Bezel

Timing the distance.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Exceptional legibility

Like all Rolex Professional watches, the Yacht-Master 42 offers exceptional legibility in all circumstances, and especially in the dark, thanks to its Chromalight display.

The broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – are filled with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting glow.

The Travel Companions

Lighter and stronger materials, masters of time measurement, discover more great watches.

THE WATCH WORLD is always innovating. Sure, there are aesthetic adjustments and wild designs being made to watches all the time, but there's also plenty of exciting details "under-the-hood" that deserve just as much attention. Our editors and style experts took both points into account when putting together the best new watches of 2024.

We've broken down our top picks in four categories: smartwatches, GMTs, titanium bezels and cases, and chronographs. The goal? To showcase all the new and exciting watches that are pushing the envelope of modern watchmaking. Let's get to the list.

The Leaner Smartwatch

TAG Heuer is elevating its smartwatches to become just as style-forward as their analog counterparts. The Connected Calibre E4 pushes the limits of its software capabilities, offering an array of insightful tools: there's an agenda app for keeping you on task, a translation app to help when traveling, and a hands-free payment capability for everyday errands. Our favorite feature, however, is the E4's golf app, loaded with a library that spans thousands of courses so can get readings on distance to pin, plus club recommendations for each shot.

TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4

TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4

Watches with a Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) function have been helping individuals keep track of two different time zones for decades now, but due to the growing connectedness of our world today, the GMT is trending bigger than ever. These stunning GMTs below will give you the ability to read your time back home when traveling (for work or for pleasure), plus the chance to have easy access to your client’s time zone when preparing for a big video meeting.

Oceanographer

Bulova Oceanographer

Offering pro-level dive resistance up to 200 meters and outfitted with retro flair, this Bulova GMT watch has you covered above and below sea level. The white background of the face is fully luminescent for extra visibility even in the greatest depths. Two additional complications make this watch more than meets the eye: one being a day/date window and the other being an independent hour hand that allows you to set your local time.

5 Sports SKX

Seiko 5 Sports SKX

One of Seiko’s most popular watch styles now comes prepped with a stylish bi-color 24-hour GMT bezel. The sub-$500 also features a “cyclops” magnified date window and luminous hands and markers for easy reading. It’s the perfect blend of function, style, and value, all wrapped into one.

Neverest

Norquain Neverest

This watch understands a true adventurer knows no bounds. The GMT’s ironclad, water-resistant construction, paired with a power reserve and a “jumping hand” feature that allows for quick time zone changes by a twist of the crown, makes the Neverest ideal for far-away trips. It’s also sentimental in the fact you can always carry your home time zone with you.

Series 8

Citizen Series 8

This sporty watch has a stainless steel, angular case that begs to be cycled into office wear. The GMT function will allow you to enjoy your remote workdays on the West Coast, while still being punctual to your afternoon meetings at the East Coast office.

It’s true the watch world traditionally hasn’t been big on titanium watches, but oh how the times are a changing. The reason? These materials are lighter, more durable, and more resistant to rust—thus leading to some exceptional new timepieces that are destined to last. These four standouts showcase the variety of directions brands are taking with titanium.

Pelagos FXD

Tudor Pelagos FXD

This prize fighter packs an incredible level of water resistance inside its titanium case. Under the hood is a self-winding mechanical movement and a massive 70-hour power reserve (watches with this feature typically reach up to just 40-hours of reserve) show how the Pelagos punches as hard for utility as it does for looks.

Spirit Flyback

Longines Spirit Flyback

In ode to what pilots used in the early days of aviation, this aviator watch has a “Flyback” function that automatically resets and restarts its stopwatch with a single press of a button. As if that complication weren’t enough, Longlines also added a chronometer with a 60 seconds hand and a 30 minute counter. That’s a lot of gear to protect. A titanium case with a rock-solid ceramic bezel is up for the challenge.

Dive Pro

Victorinox Dive Pro

Thanks to an immense focus in consolidated strength, this rugged explorer takes grit to a whole new level. The Dive Pro’s titanium case and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal display provide one of the highest levels of impact protection a watch can have (ISO 1413 rating). Even the strap goes above and beyond for crying out loud (you can choose between extensible rubber or a paracord bracelet). An emphasis on ensuring water and dirt resistance encourages you to take it places far and wide.

Yacht-Master 42

Rolex Yacht-Master 42

Just when you thought a watch couldn’t get any better, Rolex took one of its iconic designs and outfitted it with titanium. Thanks to the new material’s properties, the upgraded Yacht-Master 42 is lighter on the wrist and more corrosion resistant—titanium has a natural oxide barrier that wards off rust. This Yacht-Master is likely to pass through more generations of kin than ever thought possible.

Chronographs typically have at least one complication, an added stopwatch subdial, but they can offer up to three complications when a minutes and an hours subdial is added. Chronographs first gained prominence in racing, but the timekeeping dials can really be used for a handful of tasks. These updated chronos preserve the mastery of craft needed to build such a complex ticker, all while offering new case materials and boosted specs.

B01 Chronograph 44 Night Mission

Breitling B01 Chronograph 44 Night Mission

Designed for jet pilots, the Avenger wraps three chronograph complications with some of the most functional materials we’ve ever seen in a watch of this type. We’re talking lightweight, rust-resistant materials like titanium, a 300-meter water resistance rating, a huge 70-hour power reserve, and a strategic addition of luminated dials and numbers. You’d be hard pressed to find a chronograph more resilient than this bad boy.

Tissot PR516 Mechanical Chronograph

Tissot PR516 Mechanical Chronograph

This updated chronograph has historical ties. Its original version was worn by James Bond himself in 1973’s Live and Let Die . New age additions like an impressive 68-hour power reserve (for the times when you forget to wind it) and an illuminated dial make this watch more functional than the original.

Captain Cook Automatic Chronograph

Rado Captain Cook Automatic Chronograph

If you’re looking for a watch with sea legs, this chrono not only embodies nautical spirit but it begs for a life on the water. An anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal case help with reading even when the sun is directly beaming down midday. An illuminated dial then provides sight on the darkest of nights. As for material, Rado incorporates titanium and bronze (yes, bronze ) to create a level of corrosion resistance that stops salt water in its tracks.

Heritage Series Calendoplan S

Movado Heritage Series Calendoplan S

Dress watches are far from being the most function-forward, but this Movado kicks the status-quo with three chronograph complications packed into its polished stainless steel case; the top right subdial serves as a seconds counter, the bottom dubdial an hour counter with a date window, and the top left subdial a minute counter. This is a suitable companion for those who say, “I want sporty, but make it dressy.”
