A smoking volcano, a big Lego dragon and a spitting Stitch make it difficult for a triple-decker paddleboat restaurant to get attention these days at Disney Springs. But when the Empress Lilly came onto the scene in 1977, it was a big deal. “Disney officials say the restaurants will be like nothing seen in Orlando,” read a Sentinel caption with a construction photo from August 1976.

The paddleboat was named for Walt Disney’s widow, Lillian, who whacked a champagne bottle upon the building’s wheel as a Dixieland band watched from the upper deck on May 1, 1977, signaling its grand opening. In the mid-1990s, Empress Lilly became Fulton’s Crab House, and in 2017, it took on its current Paddlefish name.

For this week’s Disney World at 50 (publishing every Wednesday on OrlandoSentinel.com/wdw50 ), we dive into the archives for the early hype and opening of Empress Lilly.

The Empress Lilly riverboat restaurant takes shape at Walt Disney World's Lake Buena Vista Village on Nov. 9, 1976.

Early numbers

Opening-day dimensions of the restaurant were 217 feet long by 62 feet wide. The faux smokestacks up top reached a height of 84 feet. The “ship” was built on land and then water channeled around it. This was explained early on but still presented as Disney magic.

There would be three restaurants and five lounges, seating 318 patrons.

The paddle wheel would turn at one revolution per minute.

Disney was noncommittal about what it spent to create Empress Lilly, sticking with a “multimillion-dollar project” answer. But after the restaurant opened, Sentinel reporter Mark Hanebutt twice wrote the price tag was $5 million. (That translates to about $23 million today.)

This postcard of the Empress Lily is in a collection of artifacts at the Orange County Regional History Center (thehistorycenter.org). On the back, a message is transcribed in blue ink and postmarked May 17, 1984.

Inside the Empress Room

The floor plan for Empress Lilly was to have the Baton Rouge Lounge and Steerman’s Quarters, a steakhouse, on the lowest floor. One level up, accessible via a grand staircase, was the Promenade deck sporting a seafood restaurant plus the more exclusive Empress Room, which seated 68 diners.

“The dining room has been purposely designed without windows so concentration on the fine food will not be diminished,” longtime Sentinel food writer Dorothy Chapman said of the Empress Room, which had gold leaf and heavy mahogany going for it. Reservations were required for Empress Room, as were jackets and ties for men.

The Empress Room used a Lenox service plate with a rose-coral rim, circled in gold.

“The same design is carried out in the ashtrays,” the Sentinel noted.

The third deck was known as the Texas deck.

All this segmentation was torn out for the Fulton’s Crab House era, creating a single restaurant.

The restaurant reopened as Fulton's Crab House on March 10, 1996.

‘I’ll have a Mark Twain’

Here’s where the sticker shock might kick in. In 1977, the Baton Rouge Lounge cocktails were $1.50, except for a specialty one dubbed the Mark Twain, a frozen blend of brandy, creme de menthe and fruit juices. That would run you $2.50.

At Fisherman’s Deck, dinner entrees were between $7.95 and $12.50. “Daily soup choice will be lobster bisque served pristine for children and with a dash of sherry for adults,” the Sentinel wrote.

It was a flat fee for the Empress Room. Pre-opening publicity had the price “in the neighborhood of $35 per person,” but instead it was $50.

People on the scene

The first executive chef for Empress Lilly was Garry Reich, who had been executive banquet chef at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. His resume included a stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel as head chef, and he had been White House chef for President Lyndon B. Johnson. He had been head chef in the New Orleans Square area of Disneyland and, before that, a Hungarian Army cook during World War II.

There was talk that the monorail would connect the Lake Buena Shopping Village to Magic Kingdom and the “planned World Showcase.” Howard Roland, vice president in charge of construction and purchases, noted that was “somewhere down the line.”

Standing next to Lillian Disney Truyens (she had married real estate developer John Truyens in 1969) during the restaurant christening: Donn Tatum, Walt Disney Productions’ chairman of the board. He became CEO in 1971 after the death of Roy O. Disney (Walt’s older brother) and was the first non-Disney to run Disney.

An article about Lillian Disney Truyens christening the Empress Lilly appeared in the May 2, 1977 edition of the Orlando Sentinel.

Odds and ends

Although the flesh-and-blood Lillian appeared at the opening, she did not speak to reporters. “According to Disney officials, Mrs. Truyens, who is reportedly in her early 70s, was fighting a cold,” the Sentinel reported. (For the record, she was 78, according to modern sources. She died in 1997 at age 98.)

In early May 1977, the Sentinel reported that Disney had planned to serve venison and striped bass, but Florida law prohibited the sale of the game. It was removed from the menu two days before opening. “They’ll probably either return it from where they bought it or give it to charity,” said spokesman Bob Mervine. There had been calls from “concerned citizens,” the newspaper said.

In June, a column called “Inside Stuff” reported the flat fee for the exclusive experience dropped from $50 to $35. “Insiders say top Disney brass may soon decide to change the Empress Room altogether to get back to a more realistic price that would be in better keeping with the Disney image as a family adventure,” it said.

The Complete Guide to Eating at Disney’s Riviera Resort

By Kelly Oliveros 1 Comment

Eating at Disney World can be a lot of things — delicious, fun, expensive , and… stressful . With so many restaurants to pick from, where do you even begin?!

disney riverboat restaurant

Disney’s Riviera Resort

That’s where we come in! We’ve eaten at HUNDREDS of restaurants throughout Disney World and we’ve shared in-depth reviews of them ALL to help you know what is (and is NOT) worth your cash. So today we’re taking a detailed look at the restaurants within one of Disney’s newer hotels — Disney’s Riviera Resort — so you know exactly where to go and what to get!

In this post we’ll be giving you an overview of EVERY SINGLE restaurant at Disney’s Riviera Resort, sharing our picks of the top eats at each one, and detailing other facts you need to know. If you want more details about each restaurant, click the links included in the post below so you can visit the pages we’ve created for each restaurant, which link to ALL of our reviews for each spot.

If you’re looking for a casual (yet stylish!) spot to grab a bite at the Riviera, Bar Riva is the place to go. While this is “technically” the resort’s pool bar, it is SO much more. In terms of style and design, you’ll find a bar area along with comfy tables, some with regular seating and others with partial booths.

disney riverboat restaurant

Don’t forget to take a close look at the beautiful artwork here, some of which even feature Disney Cruise Line!

disney riverboat restaurant

The restaurant serves European- and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine that’s a far cry from your classic hot dogs and fries.

This is a lounge/quick service spot, so reservations are not required or accepted. Generally, you’ll find it’s open from 11AM to 10PM, but hours can vary.

disney riverboat restaurant

In terms of food, you’ll find Hot and Cold Handhelds (like a Spicy Italian Sandwich and Grilled Chicken Sandwich ), Bar Favorites (like Sticky Chicken Wings, Baked Brie, and Salmon with Orzo) , Salads (including a Greek Salad and Tuna Niçoise Salad), Kids’ Meals , and even Desserts (like Tiramisu and a Lava Cake ).

The Monte Cristo used to be a BIG favorite of ours here, but sadly it has left the menu.

disney riverboat restaurant

Riviera Spread!

Some of our favorites here include the Grilled Chicken Sandwich (it really blew us away!) and Baked Brie (you gotta love baked cheese!). If you want something creamy and flavorful, consider getting the Burrata Salad. And if you love mushrooms, parmesan, and marinara, dive into the crispy Mushroom Arancini. For dessert, both the Tiramisu and Molten Chocolate Cake are good picks!

disney riverboat restaurant

Bring on the fried food!

But you need something to wash it all down, right?! Well, you’ll be glad to know that drinks and cocktails here are made-to-order, and you’ll find a variety of them on the menu . There are non-alcoholic items (like a Hibiscus Coconut Refresher and Mediterranean Mint Lemonade) as well as various alcoholic options like the Il Tramonto , Coco di Paradiso, and Riviera Spiked Iced Tea. You’ll also find some sangria, beer, wine, hand seltzer, and frozen cocktails too (like the Provence Frosé).

disney riverboat restaurant

Hibiscus Coconut Refresher

Overall, if you’re looking for a casual, open-air, pool bar with some much more elevated eats and drinks than you’d find elsewhere, stop by Bar Riva. It might just surprise you how tasty pool bar food and drinks can be!

Click here for our full page and reviews for Bar Riva

Le petit café.

Another spot in the Riviera where you can grab a quick bite is Le Petit Café. This is a cafe within the lobby of the hotel that is styled after French cafes from Paris. It is another quick service/lounge space, so no reservations are needed or accepted.

disney riverboat restaurant

Le Petit Cafe

What’s unique about this spot is that it serves coffee and lattes in the mornings but transforms into more of a wine bar with hors d’oeuvres and specialty cocktails in the evening.  There is some limited seating within the cafe, but you can opt instead to take your eats to other quiet spots in the hotel if you’d prefer.

Hours are typically 7AM to 9PM, but that can vary.

disney riverboat restaurant

While there are various “standard” eats and drinks here, you’ll also want to look for seasonal specialties , themed to the various holidays celebrated in Disney World.

disney riverboat restaurant

Santa’s Hat mousse treat

In terms of coffee selections, you can stop here to get a French roast, cappuccino, cafe white mocha, macchiato , and other things. There’s also cold brew, a Café Glacé (with frozen cold brew blended with mocha and milk), and tea too. Again, look for seasonal drinks and specialty coffees.

disney riverboat restaurant

Harvest Cold Brew

Various pastries and sweet treats are typically available and on display in the case here, so those with a sweet tooth will be thrilled!

disney riverboat restaurant

Riviera Resort Pastries and Breads

Just note that Le Petit Cafe tends to bring out its specialty treats around lunchtime . In the morning, they tend to keep their breakfast pastries in the pastry case.

disney riverboat restaurant

Pastries and Desserts

On the menu, you’ll also find a Mediterranean Mint Lemonade (non-alcoholic), as well as beer, hard cider, hard seltzer, specialty cocktails (like an Aperol Spritz or Golden Haze Margarita), and wine for the more afternoon lounge time.

disney riverboat restaurant

Mediterranean Mint Lemonade

And in terms of the more lounge-style offerings you’ll find charcuterie, an artisanal cheese plate, and olives.

disney riverboat restaurant

Voyageurs’ Lounge Food and Drinks

In the past, some of our favorite treats from here have included the Aurora Fruit Tart , the Pumpkin Glace , and several of the other seasonal specialties.

In terms of the more lounge-style eats, the charcuterie has been super flavorful, but mixing it WITH the cheese plate has undoubtedly been the way to go.

disney riverboat restaurant

Aurora Fruit Tart

Overall, if you want unique coffee creations, stunning pastries, and some wine bar vibes at night, give Le Petit a try.

Primo Piatto

The final spot for quick eats at Riviera is Primo Piatto. This is a quick-service trattoria that serves Italian-inspired dishes. There’s seating inside the restaurant but you can also get grab-and-go options.

disney riverboat restaurant

There is an open kitchen here so you can watch the chefs in action!

disney riverboat restaurant

It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, usually from 7AM to 11PM. Mobile Order is available here, and you can get your resort refillable mugs and refill them here.

disney riverboat restaurant

At breakfast time, you’ll find sandwiches (including a Croque Madame), entrees (like Mickey-shaped waffles or a frittata), sides, plant-based options, kids’ meals, baked goods (like muffins and croissants), desserts, snacks, and drinks (many of your standard picks along with Joffrey’s coffee and tea).

disney riverboat restaurant

Baked Goods

At lunch and dinner, you’ll find hearth-baked pizzas, hot sandwiches (like burgers and a Croque Monsieur!), a cold sandwich, salads, plant-based options, soup , kids’ items, desserts, and more.

disney riverboat restaurant

Croque Monsieur

There are also some late-night dining options here including salads, desserts, and a few other snacks (including a charcuterie plate).

disney riverboat restaurant

Primo Piatto Beverage Station

In terms of our favorites or popular picks, at breakfast, the Blueberry-Lemon Pancakes are NO joke (THICK and delicious).

disney riverboat restaurant

Blueberry Pancakes

At lunch/dinner, the Margherita Pizza is divine. It really impressed us with its sweet sauce, pillowy yet crunchy dough, and delicious cheese.

The Croque Monsieur is also a wonderfully cheesy and delicious choice, and the Tomato Soup is a standout.

For a lighter pick, go with the Tuna Niçoise Salad, which wins big points for presentation and flavor.

disney riverboat restaurant

Margherita Pizza

Primo Piatto definitely serves more unique dishes than your standard Disney resort quick service, with its Italian-inspired eats. So if you’re looking for a quick meal that is tasty and different from your standard burger and fries, stop here!

Topolino’s terrace — flavors of the riviera.

And finally, we get to the last and fanciest restaurant at the Riviera — Topolino’s Terrace. Topolino’s is located on the very top of the Riviera, giving it some spectacular rooftop views. It is a table service restaurant so reservations are accepted (and recommended!).

disney riverboat restaurant

Topolino’s Terrace

Topolino’s Terrace is inspired by “cliffside restaurants of the Riviera,” and the cuisine features regional favorites. The name  Topolino means Mickey Mouse in Italian , so this elegant dining experience still has a Disney flair!

disney riverboat restaurant

View from Topolino’s Terrace

Topolino’s features dramatically different meals at breakfast and dinner.

During breakfast, Topolino’s serves a prix fixe character meal. Breakfast is usually available from around 7:30AM to 12:15PM. The meal starts off with a colorful bread basket …

disney riverboat restaurant

…and each individual also gets to choose their own entree . For adults, that includes Quiche Gruyère, French Toast Brûlée, Wood-Fired Butchers Steak, Avocado Toast, Sour Cream Waffles, and more. There are also kids’ menu items like scrambled eggs and Mickey waffle dippers.

Plus, the menu includes coffee and breakfast cocktails (with or without alcohol). P.S. You can typically get “Florida Sunshine” a.k.a. POG juice here — just ask to see if it’s available!

disney riverboat restaurant

The character breakfast is unique as it features Mickey, Donald, Minnie, and Daisy in special art-themed costumes.

disney riverboat restaurant

The bread offerings and dips are usually quite tasty and a nice way to start off the meal. In terms of entrees, we’ve loved the Wood-fired Butcher’s Steak (very high-quality meat and a good bang for your buck), and Quiche Gruyère . Those who like sweeter breakfasts may really enjoy the Sour Cream Waffles. And those who love fish may want to opt for the Smoked Salmon.

The Riviera Bloody Mary is a good pick for those who want a drink to go with their meal, and we’d totally order the Classic Bellini again.

disney riverboat restaurant

Quiche Gruyere

At dinnertime, Topolino’s changes over to a sophisticated dinner spot with stunning fireworks views (no characters)!

disney riverboat restaurant

What a View

At dinner, you’ll be able to order from a pretty substantial menu that includes antipasto (like burrata, ricotta, and escargot), starters (which include soup, gnocchi, and salad), hand-crafted pasta, entrees (like the pork shank, filet mignon, or sea scallops), enhancements, and desserts.

disney riverboat restaurant

There are also kids’ options and non-alcoholic beverages.

For those looking to grab a drink with alcohol, there are a few cocktails to pick from, as well as regional wines, dessert wines, beer, and more.

disney riverboat restaurant

Peche Repose

In terms of highlights here, the Gnocchi we’ve had here (which was made with Duck Confit, Pesto Bianco, Garden Kale, and Pine Nuts) was to die for. The Ricotta is another winner, as is the Burrata. Snail lovers can’t miss the Escargot.

The Rigatoni is fabulous, and you may want to save room in your stomach at the end of your meal to grab the oh-so-wonderful Cheese Board.

disney riverboat restaurant

For drinks, the Topolino Tramonto is absolutely GORGEOUS , sweet, and had some floral notes.

disney riverboat restaurant

Tramonto Cocktail at Topolino’s Terrace

It barely tastes of alcohol, so it can be dangerous. But if you’re really looking for the best of the best (in terms of taste), check out the  Modern Fashioned  or the  French Rose .

disney riverboat restaurant

French Rose is the epitome of fancy, don’t you think?

Can’t grab a reservation or just want to check out this spot without the full dinner commitment? There is a small bar with first-come, first-served seating . You can order from the WHOLE menu at the bar , so this could be a good backup plan if you can’t secure a table service reservation.

disney riverboat restaurant

Limited Seating

If you want a more unique character meal at breakfast, or some incredibly delicious hand-made pasta and stunning views at night, Topolino’s should be on your list.

Best Waterfront Dining at Walt Disney World

There’s just something so relaxing about dining on the water’s edge, an expansive waterside view sprawled out before you. Florida is a subtropical climate and sometimes the humidity makes it rough to be outside, but a nice breeze off a lake can make all the difference. Florida fall and winter weather are on their way (I promise), so enjoying a meal al fresco by the water is a must-do before summer shows up again. Here are my picks for the best waterside dining at Walt Disney World.

Boathouse – Disney Springs

It’s hard to think of any other waterfront experience at Walt Disney World that tops The Boathouse. The restaurant itself sits along the water’s edge, granting diners with a lovely view. Nautical decor is just the beginning as full-size boat fixtures line the walls. For the ultimate waterside dining experience go for sitting outside. A pier juts out into the lake, affording diners not only the joy of dining along the water, but being surrounded by it. If you don’t desire a full meal, you can grab a spot at the Dockside Bar and enjoy handcrafted cocktails and fresh seafood appetizers, all while watching those curiously cool amphicars.

disney riverboat restaurant

Paradiso 37 – Disney Springs

This restaurant was one of the first to open when Downtown Disney became Disney Springs. The vibrant flavors of Latin cuisine are showcased here. From Mexican to Peruvian to Caribbean, you can sample the varied tastes of exotic tropical destinations. Many of the tables in the dining area face the interior of the restaurant, but there is a back porch that wraps around all the way to the the side of the building and overlooks the water.

Paddlefish – Disney Springs

The building that Paddlefish occupies is an icon. This riverboat has stood at this spot since the beginning of Lake Buena Vista Village, then Downtown Disney, and now Disney Springs. Paddlefish has a bountiful menu of classic seafood dishes. The interior seating has water views, but the deck is the place to be for the best experience, and there is live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ – Disney Springs

My Florida Native heart rejoices every time I set foot inside this Florida-centric restaurant. The mural on top of the kitchen makes me swoon. Traditionally this Florida fare eatery is not considered as a waterfront dining option. But there is a porch and outdoor seating which have great views of the fake, but beautiful, Disney “springs”. When the weather is right you’ve got to grab some sweet tea moonshine and some appetizers, and enjoy this view.

Le Cantina de San Angel – Epcot

No other counter service restaurant in Epcot offers ample outdoor seating like the cantina at the Mexico pavilion. Enjoy traditional, casual Mexican food with an unbeatable view of World Showcase lagoon. You might be tempted to siesta here.

San Angel Inn – Epcot

Okay, admittedly this one is an unconventional addition to this list. After all, San Angel Inn’s seating is all completely indoors. Yet, most of its tables have some of the best water viewing of any Disney restaurant because it overlooks a delightful boat ride: the Grand Fiesta Tour. Grab a margarita and some delicious chile rellenos and savor that view that only Epcot can offer.

disney riverboat restaurant

Spice Road Table – Epcot

When Disney announced they were adding another full-service restaurant at the Morocco Pavilion it raised many an eyebrow. The dining in this pavilion isn’t all that popular with the average guest. However, this lagoon-side restaurant should not be overlooked. Its expansive patio allows for wonderful views of World Showcase Lagoon. Their menu pairs perfectly with watching a sunset or Epcot’s fireworks right from your table.

Rose and Crown Pub and Dining Room – Epcot

This popular spot for grabbing a drink also has more than just pub grub. The bulk of the seating is indoors, but there are side and back patios, the back offering relaxing views of World Showcase Lagoon. This area is very popular around fireworks time.

Flame Tree Barbecue – Disney’s Animal Kingdom

disney riverboat restaurant

Before the days of Tiffins and Nomad Lounge, my go-to meal at Disney’s Animal Kingdom was always Flame Tree Barbecue. Even though the park’s dining options have expanded a lot recently, Flame Tree is still a solid choice and if you go to the seating pavilion that faces the lagoon on which Rivers of Light performed, you’re in for a memorable meal. The lagoon is lovely anytime of day.

Nomad Lounge – Disney’s Animal Kingdom

My absolute favorite Lounge in any theme park is Nomad Lounge. It’s beautiful, it’s relaxing, and has a great menu. The wrap-around patio overlooks the park’s Discovery River and has a view of the bridge that leads guests to the wondrous land Pandora – World of Avatar.

Three Bridges Bar & Grill – Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

You can’t get more waterside than being surrounded by water. The Three Bridges Bar and Grill at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort is one of many new additions to this thoroughly re-imagined resort. This spot is fantastic for relaxation or socialization, with appetizers meant to be shared. The drink menu is larger than most Disney hotel lounge menus. The views are spectacular, but are made all the better when a soft breeze crosses over the lagoon.

Geyser Point – Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

This lakeside Lounge-style eatery has found a place in my heart as one of my favorites. I love the relaxed seating. I love the completely open air. And I cherish the lakeside views. The menu is great too! The brisket dip appetizer is packed with flavor, the salads are fresh and bountiful, and a great beer and wine menu add to the delights.

Tips and Information

  • Reservations are recommended for most of the full-service restaurants in this guide. Be sure to make note of your desire to sit outside when making your reservation.
  • Arrive early for outdoor seating as it is often desired by most guests.
  • If you wish to view sunset or fireworks from the applicable restaurant or bar, arrive early and be patient.

The Riverboat Returns to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom

February 5, 2021, 1:22 PM · The Rivers of America are back at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom . Disney refilled the Rivers and returned the Liberty Belle riverboat to its rebuilt track under the waterway this morning.

The Rivers have been drained since October, during which time the riverboat was in dry dock at Disney's maintenance facility on the northern shore of Bay Lake, getting a refurbishment. But that meant that the Liberty Belle had to sail across Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon and then up the canal that runs behind Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain and Bug Thunder Mountain and connects to the Rivers of America.

You can zoom in on this Google Map to see what I'm talking about. And Disney has put out a video showing highlights of that trip.

Once back in Liberty Square, the riverboat has to be connected to the track on the riverbed, which requires divers. Just so you know, the riverboat is the only watercraft on the Rivers of America that runs on a rail. The rafts to Tom Sawyer Island float freely and are driven by their cast members, as were the keelboats and canoes that used to run on Walt Disney World's Rivers of America, too.

I tell plenty of stories about working on the Rivers of America in Stories from a Theme Park Insider . And I worked there during a previous draining of the Rivers, which led to a, uh, messy situation . Don't throw turkey legs into the water!

A question for you Insiders who know: Could the Riverboat have theoretically traveled across the Seven Seas Lagoon under its own power instead of being towed?

robert

I think it's more a question of navigation than propulsion. But I wasn't trained on Riverboat, so I defer to anyone who was.

What restaurants are open Easter 2024? Details on Starbucks, McDonald's, fast food, takeout

disney riverboat restaurant

This upcoming Sunday is Easter , an important day in the Christian faith that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I spend over $1,300 on a Disney World annual pass every year, even though I live more than 1,000 miles away

  • I spend over $1,300 a year on my Disney World annual pass despite living over 1,000 miles away.
  • As a Disney World annual- pass holder, I get discounts on dining, merchandise, and special events.
  • The price of an annual pass is worth it as long as I visit the parks at least eight times a year.

Insider Today

Even though I live over 1,000 miles from Disney World, I've been an annual-pass holder since 2023.

My work schedule is flexible, so I typically fly to Orlando monthly. Taking such frequent trips to Disney allows me to take my time in the parks and visit with local friends.

Though I was initially interested in the annual pass for the savings on park tickets, benefits such as merchandise discounts and resort savings have been bonuses.

Here's why my Disney World annual pass is worth every penny — and why you might consider it a good value even if you live far from the Sunshine State.

As an annual-pass holder, I can travel to Disney World when it's convenient and affordable.

disney riverboat restaurant

Having an annual pass allows me the flexibility to take a quick trip to Orlando when it's most affordable for me. Often, I can find round-trip airfare for less than $100.

Another perk is that my annual pass has no blackout dates, so I can visit the parks whenever I want — even on holidays or during busy school-vacation days.

The price of an annual pass makes sense as long as I visit the parks at least eight days a year.

disney riverboat restaurant

Because I'm not a Florida resident or a member of the Disney Vacation Club, I only have one option for an annual pass: the Disney Incredi-Pass. This is the highest-tier pass and costs $1,450 before taxes.

Though pricing fluctuates depending on the day of the week and the ticket type, a low-priced park-hopper ticket that allows guests access to multiple parks in one day starts at a little over $200.

Based on this math, as long as I plan to visit the Disney parks more than eight days a year, the annual pass works out in my favor.

As an annual-pass holder, I receive discounts on restaurants, resorts, and experiences.

In addition to park admission, my annual pass includes discounts on dining, merch, entertainment, car rentals, and even hotels during select times of the year.

The dining discounts vary based on the venue, but most table-service restaurants offer 10% off the price of food and nonalcoholic beverages.

Passholders also receive discounts on merchandise. But this discount isn't just limited to shops in the parks — select stores in Disney Springs also honor the discount. From Kate Spade to Sanuk, discounts on select items can range from 10% to 20%.

Other perks of being an annual-pass holder include savings on water-park admission, movie tickets, and behind-the-scenes tours.

I can also purchase discounted tickets to special events.

disney riverboat restaurant

Annual-pass holders can also purchase discounted tickets to Disney After Hours events. These are three-hour limited-capacity events during certain parts of the year at Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios , and Disney's Typhoon Lagoon.

In addition to offering cooler temperatures and shorter wait times, guests can also enjoy popcorn, ice cream, and select drinks included in the cost of their ticket.

The annual-pass-holder discounts range from $15 to $30, depending on the park.

Having an annual pass allows me to enjoy the parks at a more relaxed pace.

disney riverboat restaurant

Having an annual pass makes it easy to spend time in the parks without feeling guilty that I haven't done enough to justify the high price of a daily ticket.

Rather than race from ride to ride, I prefer to stroll through the detailed Epcot pavilions or take an afternoon break during the hottest parts of the day.

I've even popped into a park just to find a certain piece of merch or try a recently released treat.

Hundreds of thousands of fish were killed earlier this month in a nearly 50-mile stretch of the East Nishnabotna River to the Missouri border due to a fertilizer spill in Iowa, state officials said.

Hundreds of thousands of fish were killed earlier this month in a nearly 50-mile stretch of the East Nishnabotna River to the Missouri border due to a fertilizer spill in Iowa, state officials said.

On March 11, NEW Cooperative, Inc. in Red Oak reported to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that a spill occurred on their Montgomery County premises.

About 1,500 tons (equal to 265,000 gallons) of liquid nitrogen fertilizer (32% solution) was released into a drainage ditch, which subsequently entered the East Nishnabotna River.

The spill happened due to an above-ground storage tank valve that was mistakenly left open over the weekend, the DNR said.

DNR Fisheries staff said the fish kill affected the entire 49.8 miles of the East Nishnabotna and Nishnabotna Rivers downstream of the spill and extended to Missouri’s section of the Nishnabotna River before concluding near the junction with the Missouri River.

As of Thursday, it was reported that a total of 749,242 fish had been killed , with the most affected species being the minnows, shiners, dace and chubs at 707,871.

Ongoing investigations are being conducted to determine the impact of the fertilizer release on other aquatic life.

According to Iowa state codes, a permit is required to discharge pollutants into a river .

The DNR is collaborating with its legal department to determine the next course of action regarding enforcement and restitution for the loss of aquatic life.

According to recent field tests, ammonia levels in the river are showing a decline.

However, the DNR still recommends that individuals refrain from engaging in recreational activities on the river and avoid collecting or consuming dead fish found in or around the river.

Pasco scales back Anclote River Park revamp, schedules public meeting

  • Barbara Behrendt Times staff

Pasco County officials may be promising to scale back plans to revamp Anclote River Park.

But after months of public discussion, studies by Pasco County and scrutiny by Florida’s indigenous people, there are lingering fears among outdoor enthusiasts that the county’s plan to expand the park is still too much.

This week Linda Martell, who created the Change.org petition that has 5,300 signatures urging the county to be cautious, again asked the Pasco County Commission to do the right thing for those who enjoy its peace and green spaces.

Several months ago county officials notified Keith Overton, the business owner who has a lease to build a restaurant and add new commercial features at the park, including a possible event venue, that he had to downsize the original plan. He has not formally responded.

The county granted the lease for an ambitious project by Overton on the site, which is adjacent to a Native American mound, in August of 2022. His proposal had been for a themed 22,000-square-foot restaurant dubbed Whiskey Fish on the Anclote but the county said it wanted something more in the range of 3,000 square foot.

Martell told county commissioners that was still too much.

“Not only would this disrupt sacred lands but also nature,” she said, pointing out that dolphins and manatees frequent the river and adding more people and more boats would put them at risk. Previous reports also note there is an active bald eagle’s nest within the park boundaries.

Martell said park goers are fine frequenting a food truck or nearby restaurant when they go to the park to help small business owners, but not a larger, permanent building on site.

“Do what’s best for Anclote Park,” she urged commissioners. “We like our peace.”

In addition to the new features the county sought an outside business to provide, Pasco Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources also has its own plan to expand recreational options across the property. Weekends during peak boating season can be hectic and crowded. More parking and better circulation of traffic, as well as expanded boat launch facilities and an expanded beach, were planned.

Martell said that the county wasn’t thinking that through either.

“If there are fights happening at the boat ramp now,” she said, “what do you think is going to happen when you have a restaurant that serves alcohol?”

Commissioner Kathryn Starkey told Martell that the county is aware of the public concerns and that a scaled down plan for the park has been created. She encouraged Martell to pick up a copy and explained that the new approach is to build far fewer new parking spaces, to provide more green space and plant more trees.

She said that she was “very pleased” with the new emphasis and that no one in the county wants to see a huge commercial business on site.

Starkey also said the county has scheduled a long-promised town hall meeting to explain the plans. That has now been set for April 15 from 6-7 p.m. in the Pasco County Government Center in New Port Richey in the County Commission Chambers.

County parks staff were not available to respond to specific questions from the Tampa Bay Times about details of the scaled-back plan. They also have not explained how the county will respond to and incorporate information from the recent archaeological study and ground penetrating radar report about the indigenous mound there.

While the study didn’t find buried remains, it could not rule out the possibility that they exist. It offered recommendations including potentially creating interpretive displays on the grounds to tell visitors about the indigenous populations that once lived on or visited the site.

Providing educational information could help the county “strike the appropriate balance” between protecting the cultural resource and allowing public use and access to the park, the consultant said.

The consultant also urged Pasco officials to keep the representatives of indigenous groups involved in the county’s future plans for the park.
