Each mask, a masterpiece of design and detailing, promises to be more than just an accessory. Whether it's classic horror or avant-garde designs, our latest offerings are here to set new benchmarks in Halloween fashion.

Creepy Halloween Masks

Curious about what lies beyond?

There's an art to making something truly creepy instead of just scary. Our line of creepy Halloween masks exemplifies this subtle distinction. While a scary mask might shock you briefly, our creepy masks linger in your psyche with their unsettling details. Through expert craftsmanship and insights into the darker corners of the human mind, each mask in this collection evokes a deeply unnerving feeling that stays with you.

Experience True Fright with Our Lifelike Latex Horror Masks

Take our Rotting Rebecca mask, for example. The soulless eyes and decaying lips and scalp capture a specific brand of horror - one that leaves a lasting mark. Or consider the multiple tropes that make Palooka the Clown so disquieting, from the inherent creepiness of clowns to his just-too-wide grin.

Terrify and Thrill with Our Meticulously Crafted Horror Mask Collection

When you want more than just a quick scare this Halloween, our line of masks delivers satisfaction through true creepiness. Their haunting visages will leave your guests unsettled long after your party ends. So be prepared for the nightmares you'll inspire with the subtle horror of our creepy masks.

Zombie Halloween Masks

Eager to embrace the living dead?

The zombie genre has come far from its humble, shambling corpse origins. Today's Walking Dead encompasses endless creepy manifestations limited only by imagination. Our zombie mask collection captures this evolution with grotesque creativity.

Classic zombie tropes get taken to new heights of horror. Undead brains ooze from cracked skulls. Skeletal jaws chatter and moan. Demented zombie clowns cackle with mirth at the thought of feasting on flesh. Other designs hybridize zombies with vampires, werewolves, and swamp creatures.

Every gruesome detail of our premium latex zombie masks has been hand-crafted to unsettle. The delicate textures evoke the feeling of decay and unlife. Oozing wounds, exposed tendons, trailing viscera - no aspect of zombie rot goes unexplored.

Within this nightmarish horde, you will find inspiration for a zombie persona that grabs you. Mix and match elements from multiple designs to conceive your unique abomination. Then, complete the look with tattered, blood-spattered garb.

If you hunger for horror, sink your teeth into our zombie mask collection. The Walking Dead has never looked so revoltingly real.

Clown Halloween Masks

Intrigued by the royal shadows?

Welcome to the Sinister Circus, where our collection of creepy clown masks awaits to creep and delight! Beware the big top filled with demented jesters and possessed performers, eager for new victims to torture.

Maniacal killers, bloodthirsty zombies, and all manner of sadistic clowns fill our ranks. Gaze upon their menacing grins and ponder which of these nightmarish fiends will come for you when our evil circus hits town.

Handcrafted in gruesome detail by talented artists, our professional-quality masks ensure maximum spine-chilling realism. The over-the-head designs allow full-headed horror that will haunt both neighborhood trick-or-treaters and hardcore haunt enthusiasts alike.

Gather your sinister clown posse to prowl the night in a clown car, seeking tender flesh and sweet candy while spreading terror. Our scariest clown masks will leave an unforgettable impression of unease at any Halloween gathering.

The big top of horror welcomes you! Come one and all to gasp in delight at the creepy clowns in our collection – if you dare!

Vampire Halloween Masks

Drawn to the legends of the night?

Behind the grotesque visage of each mask lies a story waiting to be told. Our collection of horror masks gives form to your darkest imaginings and deepest fears.

Will you become the undead revenant seeking lost vengeance? Slip on the Rotting Zombie mask and shuffle forth with vacant eyes and putrid flesh. Or perhaps a vampiric temptress with ravenous appetites calls to you? Reveal your true, bloodthirsty nature behind the Velvet Vampires.

From classic monsters to surreal oddities, there are myriad realms of terror to explore. Each mask transforms you into the embodiment of horror you never knew lurked within.

Yet beneath the haunting facades, a hint of humanity remains. Glimpse the lingering tragedy inside the Creepy Clown's laughter. Feel the Grim Reaper's weariness after centuries of harvesting mortal souls. Their stories yearn to be told.

When you don the skin of monsters, you may find hidden truths about the human condition. And discover that the most terrifying masks are the ones we wear ourselves. Our collection invites you to embrace the darkness and walk in worlds that stir your deepest fantasies and fears.

Dare to wear the mask and see what lies beyond. A story all your own awaits.

Alien Halloween Masks

Intrigued by the otherworldly?

The skies open, and extraterrestrial terror descends! Our collection of alien masks draws from the deepest reaches of science fiction, personal encounters, and cosmic nightmares.

Behold leering alien visages like the classic big-eyed Greys, their black stare harboring cryptic intentions. Feel the primal horror of Carnage, an alien abomination akin to the legendary "Thing." Or witness the insanity of "The Victim," evidence of an otherworldly presence festering in the mind.

Each mask encapsulates our darkest imaginings of what alien life may harbor. The troll's demented grin hides cosmic secrets, while the Reptilian's slit pupils emanate ancient intelligence. Every subtle detail evokes the mystery and menace of forces beyond our world.

Crafted from premium latex with exquisite attention to realistic textures, our alien masks are out of this world. Give flesh to UFO lore and sci-fi legend this Halloween. Summon your inner space invader and obscure your humanity behind extraterrestrial traits.

The truth is out there; it wears one of our alien masks to walk unnoticed among us. Believe it at your peril...

Gory/Bloody Halloween Mask s

Tempted by the macabre?

Brace yourself for carnage with our grisly selection of bloody Halloween masks. These gore-soaked creations capture the visceral spirit of slasher horror in gruesome, lifelike detail.

Drenched in rivers of crimson and layered with sickening textures, each mask embodies the nightmarish potential hiding within reality's dark corners. The Clown's smile drips with fresh vitae. The Spider's mandibles glisten with the sheen of newly spilled entrails. No classic phobia goes unexploited.

Shotgun Blast Head reminds us how even the undead can be dispatched in an explosively gory fashion. Neck Stump playfully ponders the limits of living without one's brain. And Puppetized reflects the disturbing loss of free will and humanity itself.

Expertly handcrafted from premium latex, no aspect of bone-chilling mutilation goes unexplored. Oozing lacerations, shredded sinew, exposed brain matter - our grisly touches elicit cringes and screams.

Slip into a skin of carnage and terror this Halloween. Our bloody masks promise an unforgettable experience for both the wearer and the spectator. Gore hounds and haunt enthusiasts unite and delight in the ultimate terrified reactions to our sticky, dripping, macabre masterpieces.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Horror Dome masks, costumes and props are not available in stores, as the manufacturer we only sell our Collector masks, costumes and props right here on our website. This insures that you will have an original Horror Dome mask design and not a cheap knock off.

Horror Dome Studios products are made thicker but are still very comfortable so they last longer and could take much more abuse than other Halloween products on the market. We also have Hollywood artists sculpting our designs keeping every product we make original. Each Horror Dome product is hand painted for the most realistic look possible. Our products are not sold in stores so you can be guaranteed not to have the same over produced product that everyone else has.

A Pre-Order is an item that has not yet been released by the manufacturer, but is available to be ordered in advanced.

Pre-Ordering an item is a great way to guarantee yourself a place in line, as we ship on a first come first serve basis.

The expected ship month for the product is an estimate of our release date. It is the most accurate information we have, but not necessarily a guarantee.

If you place a Pre-Order, you will be billed now to guarantee your place in line. There are no cancellations on Pre-Orders since once you place your order the product will be added to our production list and we will start making it for you.

Credit Cards accepted: American Express - Discover - MasterCard - Visa.We also accept PayPal, Sezzle and Amazon Pay.

Yes, we do ship internationally. It will cost more to ship your order internationally than within the United States. Delivery times are also longer for international shipping.

Often when you purchase more than one item, it will come from more than one studio or warehouse. This means that the rest of your order is being sent separately and can sometimes arrive at different times.

Another possibility is that one of the items is out of stock. When this occurs, the amount of that item plus its shipping will be refunded back to your card (or PayPal or check in the mail).

If your mask too loose, you can glue some new and unused sponges or sheet foam cut to size into the inside using rubber cement or silicone bathtub caulk. If it is too tight, you might consider slitting the back. However, it is very rare that a mask is too tight as our artists design our pieces with wear ability in mind.

By such and such date - we cannot make promises on delivery times, and do not accept refunds for any non-Halloween deadline. You can always email and ask.

Keep your mask on a wig stand, or something roughly head-shaped. Keep them out of heat. Keep them out of sunlight and fluorescent lighting. If the mask becomes distorted (remember latex is a natural product) use a blow drier on the low-heat setting. Store covered in a plastic bag, or in a sealed display case.

Ice S-cream Clown Mask

What is the difference between a horror mask and a Halloween mask?

Horror masks differ from Halloween Masks primarily in their appearance. The horror mask comes in most cases with very little or completely without humor and instead comes up with gruesome, sometimes very graphic elements. A Halloween mask, on the other hand, can still turn out very funny despite its creepy feel - think of a classic ghost.

The horror mask doesn't claim to be funny at all, and instead stands out for its explicit depiction of violence and shock effects. By wearing a horror mask, the masked person wants to do one thing in addition to actually scaring people, namely shock them.

What makes a horror mask a horror mask?

A horror mask is successful when the sight of the mask triggers extreme discomfort, panic or disgust in your counterpart and he cannot withstand the sight of the horror mask for long without his innermost fears and protective reflexes sounding the alarm.

Graphic Horror Masks

There are various horror masks that trigger quite different effects in the viewer. Obvious horror masks, such as the bloody Fulci Zombie Mask, a goo covered alien mask or a horror mask that shows a torn face, are all graphic horror masks that usually provide the shock - and disgust effect through disfigured faces, monster grimaces or copious amounts of movie blood. Famous horror masks from this genre include zombie masks, werewolf masks and monster masks like the Frankenstein mask.

Viking Zombie Mask

Subtle Horror Masks

Subtle horror masks, on the other hand, are masks that more or less do without the aforementioned disgusting effects, but still cause immediate panic in the viewer. Rigid, emotionless horror masks only provide the true horror through their coldness and motionlessness. Any personality and emotions are no longer visible to the horror mask, which takes away the possibility for the viewer of the horror mask to have an obvious effect on the mask wearer. Often a subtle horror mask is much worse in effect than an obvious horror mask of a monster. Many of the successful slasher horror films resort to expressionless and thus particularly merciless killers wearing a horror mask. The genre of subtle horror masks includes, for example, the Jason Ice Hockey Mask of Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" the white, rigid Michael Myers Mask Halloween 2 or the creepy doll masks from the movie "The Strangers".

Horror masks that became a cult

Countless horror movies thrive on horror masks, some of which look terrible, while others have become classics in horror movie history due to subtle horror masks. You can't imagine some of the most famous movie characters without their corresponding horror mask. Many serial killers and mass murderers got their horrible identity through their mask.

With Halloween just around the corner, it's time once again for the most famous horror masks - and what better way to top the charts than with the white, rigid Michael Myers mask that, along with the Jason Hockey mask from the movie "Friday the 13th," terrified an entire generation of movie fans. Other classic horror masks include the Bleeding Scream Mask from Wes Craven's "Scream", the Billy ventriloquist horror mask from the torture horror movie "Saw" and of course not to forget the Leatherface mask "The new generation" from the movie " Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

Horror masks that are mistakenly disregarded

In addition to the classics listed above, there are still horror masks that are not associated with fear and terror in the first place, and yet these as horror masks provide a part of the people downright for anxiety. The clown mask is one of the masks that many people judge as a horror mask. Puppet masks and children's masks are named equally. Animal Masks brings up the rear among horror masks. You see, even with these mundane masks you can scare someone properly! It is always a matter of the right horror mask, which must be used at the right time in the right place. So almost every mask can become an absolute horror mask.

Make horror masks yourself

Of course you can make your own horror mask. You just have to think about the purpose of the event and where you want to wear it. Materials for a horror mask can be cloth, burlap, papier-mache or plaster. With liquid latex, which is available in our shop, you can coat cloth, kitchen paper and foam, which can be used as a base for your self-made horror mask.

Horror Masks Are Never Just About the Monster

These cinematic mainstays continue to terrify.

By Maya Phillips

ghost mask horror

When “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” came out in 1974, it was marketed as a true story, which undoubtedly added to the horror factor. The claim was mostly false, though the star of the movie, Leatherface, was loosely inspired by the killer Ed Gein, called the “Butcher of Plainfield,” who made furniture and a suit out of human skin. And there was another unnerving real-life inspiration. “The idea actually came from a doctor I knew,” Tobe Hooper , the director of the film, told Texas Monthly. “I remembered that he’d once told me this story about how, when he was a pre-med student, the class was studying cadavers. And he went into the morgue and skinned a cadaver and made a mask for Halloween.”

Even before Covid made masks a daily inconvenience for us, they occupied a mighty space in our cultural imagination. Masks are a mainstay of horror, donned by mysterious strangers and serial killers while they terrorize innocents. The blank, lifeless visages of such classic horror masks as those belonging to Leatherface, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers seem to signify corpses — faces stripped of their verve and individuality.

These masks also embody the unknown: the mystery of the person behind the mask and the disconnect between what may seem otherwise mundane (an animal mask, a hockey mask) and the mask’s frightfulness when placed in a new context. But there’s something deeper to the psychology of our fear around masks, related to our worst fears about ourselves and the fragile structure of society — whether it’s in a house of cannibals in Middle of Nowhere, Texas, or in our own familiar haunts during a time of pandemic.

Leatherface wears three different masks throughout the movie, which he switches into based on the situation, as a way to show emotion. Of course, the faces sag on his own face, so that on top of the horror of the mask itself, there’s the uncanny sight of our flesh-faced killer’s real features poking out from beneath the mask’s.

With masks, it is never about the monster but the man whose mask obscures and reveals him.

In the “Halloween” movies, Michael Myers’s chalk-white face mask, like Leatherface’s, is eerily emotionless. Designed by Tommy Lee Wallace, the mask was based on a Captain Kirk “death mask” that was created for “Star Trek.” The show didn’t end up using it, so Wallace converted it, coloring the hair and face and cutting the eye holes larger to create the vacant look.

But it’s not just a deficit of emotion that can add to a mask’s horror; it’s a false presentation of one. One of the ways humans socialize is via mirroring, mimicking the body language and facial expressions of those around us. Mirror neurons trigger our sense of empathy. Masking breaks this connection, making the masked person seem unknowable, perhaps even, in these worst cases, inhuman. And yet they are all too human. In fact, some horror movie mask designs nod to the fact that we all have a capacity to do horrible things.

The grotesque Smiley masks from the 2012 horror movie “Smiley” — fleshy featureless sights with eye slits and a smiling mouth slit cut and stitched in — recall the smiley emoticon. It’s well-matched to the movie’s theme, about a Candyman-esque killer who can be summoned via the internet to murder people.

For the seminal horror movie satire “Scream,” the director Wes Craven wasn’t initially sure what the killer’s mask would look like. The screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, simply referred to a “ghost mask killer” in the screenplay. While location-scouting in California, Marianne Maddalena, a producer on the film series, found the Ghostface mask — made by a Halloween company called Fun World, as part of its “Fantastic Faces” line — in a house that happened to be the same one Alfred Hitchcock featured in his film “Shadow of a Doubt.” Craven immediately loved it.

Even the humble beginnings of the iconic Ghostface mask, as just another commercial Halloween costume prop, indicates something frightful that was part of the appeal for Craven: The killer could be anyone, any person you know.

In “The Strangers,” three sadistic killers, one in a doll mask, one in a pinup mask and one in crude baggy mask — ones you would be able to make yourself or get in a store — terrorize people for the hell of it. Their anonymity and lack of motive undercut the comforting idea that people are inherently good, that one may not hurt a stranger senselessly.

A belief in human empathy, honesty and reason are our safety blankets when we consider horror. But masks may also expose our most primal selves. It makes sense, then, that many horror movies use animal masks for their frights. In “You’re Next,” in which a family is attacked by three men wearing a lamb mask, a fox mask and a tiger mask, the screenwriter, Simon Barrett (who was actually the man behind the tiger mask in the film), said , “If the movie has a theme, it’s what people are hiding on the inside.”

In the same interview with IGN , Adam Wingard, the director of the film, said, “We didn’t want them to be autonomous killing machines. There are actually people under the masks.”

But there’s also the scare factor of something innocuous being taken out of context. Just as horror movies make their currency in creepy children and dolls, there’s a sense of betrayal, then fear, that accompanies the perversion of the innocent, mundane elements of our lives. Animal masks may appear in a young child’s birthday party, or a cheap costume for Halloween. And yet, worn on three crossbow-shooting, ax-swinging grown men, they are divorced from such a chaste context.

Even an adorable bunny may become a figure out of a nightmare, as in the unseemly grimace of Frank from “Donnie Darko.” April Ferry, who designed Frank’s textured skin and foggy, pupil-less eyes, told Entertainment Weekly , “I was very adamant that it had to make an impact. It has to disturb people. It has to make the audience sit up in their seat and have a really intense response.”

For masks like those worn by Hannibal Lecter (whose character in “The Silence of the Lambs” was also based on Ed Gein and whose unique muzzle was based on a hockey mask) and Jason Voorhees, team sports figured into the horror. Jason’s iconic mask didn’t actually appear until the third “Friday the 13th” film, when he attacks a character in a barn and steals his hockey mask. Martin Jay Sadoff, the 3-D supervisor for the film, suggested they use a goalie mask, since Sadoff was a hockey fan. The look stuck, and it’s not simply the expressionless visage but the implication of violence. Hockey bears the reputation as an intentionally brutal sport, so a mask out of context invites the possibility for violence even off the ice. But it’s also the sepulchral, blank appearance, that recalls a skull.

We relate faces to our identities, so when we’re masked, the anonymity we’re granted may allow us to untether ourselves from any ethical or social contracts we’d otherwise be beholden to. Masks may recall killers and robbers, or even a night of more modest high jinks, like Halloween.

A mask is just material. The person? That’s the real horror.

Masks, which hint at some macabre sight or simply a human no longer in touch with his humanity, also imply a wider social disorder. In “The Purge” franchise, Americans have one night a year to give in to their most base, vile impulses without any repercussions. The movies paint a grim reality in which people are all too eager to put on masks and kill as they please. Of course, the conceit is a way to satirize the American systems that implicitly allow for the prejudice toward, disenfranchisement of and undermining of certain racial and socioeconomic groups by making such practices explicit in the world of the films.

The pandemic has made us all consider how much masks change the perception we have of ourselves and others. Jason masks have had a decent showing lately. When Tom Savini, a master of special effects and makeup artist for several George A. Romero films and other horror classics, teamed up with fellow artist Jason Baker to make horror P.P.E. masks, the masks were so popular they had to hire a crew to increase production.

The killer N.H.L. wannabe himself has had words for those who resist masking up during the pandemic. In a recent P.S.A. video from JoBlo Horror Trailers, Jason sadly deals with the fact that people run from him in fear, just to discover in the end that perhaps all he really needed was a Covid-19 mask, given to him by a little girl. “Wearing a mask can be scary. Not wearing one can be deadly,” the video ends.

10 best mask-themed horror movies, according to imdb.

Masked horror movie icons are sprinkled throughout the genre and some have been at the head of films with strong IMDb ratings.

Masks have played a critical role in horror movies since the earliest days of the genre. In fact, the number of characters in the genre that can be identified by their iconic facial coverings is simply astounding. Whether that's simply to conceal a killer's identity or to cover up a horrifying disfigurement, it all comes back to playing a key feature for the characters.

Even the articles themselves have become an icon of the genre, sometimes being a mandatory setpiece for the plot. From something as simple as a rubber face for Halloween to theatrical pieces of costumery, masks have been the most prominent factor for both movies and the characters that wear them.

There’s Someone Inside Your House (2021) - 4.8

Stream on netflix.

While it might be low rated, the masks used in this Netflix horror film play a crucial role in both the movie's plot. As the shadowy secrets of each victim's deeds come to light, so are they reflected in the killer's specially made masks.

Without going into spoiler territory, the killer's calling card is a series of 3D-printed masks made to look like each one of the many high school victims in the cast. As is the case in stories of secrets, lies, and deception, all the sins of the perpetrators are soon known and revealed when the truth comes home to roost.

Halloween III: Season Of The Witch (1982) - 5.0

Rent on apple tv.

Though this entry in the iconic franchise has the notable absence of the infamous Michael Myers , it did still keep the theme of the mask alive and well. But instead of being worn by an escaped psychopath on the loose, the masks are enchanted traps set to curse the trick-or-treaters that wear them.

In a plot concerning a coven of witches, evil Celtic magic, and an army of cyborg henchmen, this strange deviation from the standard horror plot stands out as the black sheep of the series but has since become a cult classic in recent years. Plus, the Pumpkin, Witch, and Skull masks have become as recognizable as Michael's own Shatner mask.

Hell Fest (2018) - 5.5

Hell Fest  was a modern return-to-form for the slasher genre, featuring a mysterious masked murderer, a group of teens, and a creepy location in the form of a haunted attraction . It jumps through the same similar hoops as something like  Halloween, The Prowler,  or  Friday the 13th  might, but it still retains its own visual identity with its setting, design, and slasher in the center of it all.

Known primarily as "The Other," the hooded creep dons a dirty yellow corpse mask when he finds his next group of targets at a horror-themed amusement park. In the end, it's revealed that this is far from the Other's first rodeo, as demonstrated by the collection of masks he keeps in his garage.

Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) - 6.0

Stream on paramount+.

No conversation about masked slasher movies would be complete without an appearance from Camp Crystal Lake's resident monster, Jason Voorhees. The  Friday the 13th series made the image of a white hockey mask forever associated with the horror movie genre, and Jason Lives  is arguably where the series came into its own.

By the sixth film, the movies were starting to become clichés of themselves. So,  Part VI  went all the way with the idea and played up the tropes. In every movie featuring Jason's signature mask, it's this tongue-in-cheek entry that truly captures the best of the franchise.

You’re Next (2011) - 6.6

Stream on hulu.

2011's   You're Next   puts a different spin on the home-invasion storyline. Because not only are the film's killers absolute professionals as what they do, the final girl of the feature is too. When a family dinner is crashed by a group of masked assassins armed to the teeth, chaos ensues as they start picking off victims. That is until one applies her survivalist training.

What makes the killers in animal masks different from the standard-issue slasher is their approach to the task at hand. While their white masks are certainly creepy, their weaponry and tactical gear are much more practical than what others of the trade might wear. By having them as hired blades rather than mindless masked murderers a la  The Strangers,  the film makes the threat more grounded and therefore scarier.

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon (2006) - 6.7

Stream on shudder, amc+, & hoopla.

Before movies like  Cabin in the Woods   were playing the meta-horror-comedy card, Leslie Vernon   was doing it all the way back in 2006. In this self-aware study of the slasher movie genre, horror icons like Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface are historical figures who inspire one "unique" individual to pursue a career as a sinister slasher. A documentary crew follows his process and his story but soon discovers it's not all a bunch of horror movie cliches.

While a masked persona is a prominent fixture in the second and third acts of the film, the real mask in question is more of a figure of speech. As the documentary team uncovers more and more about Leslie's past and plans for murder, the mask of a seemingly over-zealous slasher fan is pulled away to reveal a true monster behind it all

Scream (1996) - 7.3

Stream on paramount+.

What began as a horror-comedy parodying the clichés and tropes set by other members of the slasher genre soon gave the world an unforgettable mask seen in stores every Halloween ever since. Ghostface has become more than just a creep with a knife and a talkbox, but an identity that has spread across five films and a horror spinoff with three seasons of slashing.

The pale face and black hooded cloak are practically on the same level as Jason's hockey mask when it comes to levels of recognition. The look has been around so long that it's practically become a symbol of the horror genre as a whole in its own right.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - 7.5

Stream on shudder, amc+, tubi, & showtime.

When the main villain's most notorious deed is collecting the faces of his victims to make into masks, it's bound to get someone's attention. When it first premiered way back in 1974,  The Texas Chainsaw Massacre   was one of the most shocking features ever thrown up on the big screen. With Leatherface and his penchant for skin collecting, it's fairly easy to see why.

The masks do more than make the already-fearsome Bubba Sawyer a more intimidating force, they supposedly represent different sides of his fractured personality. While his standard skin mask is used while he's collecting victims for dinner, he has a mask with grandmother-styled attire for the kitchen, and a makeup-smeared "pretty lady" mask to pair with his black suit. The different personae give the character more layers than the standard chainsaw-swinging slasher.

The Phantom Of The Opera (1925) - 7.6

Possibly one of the first masked horror icons, the Phantom of the Opera has worn a variety of masks since he first lept off the pages of Gaston Leroux's original novel and onto the silver screen. Brought to life originally by the legendary Lon Chaney, the unmasking of the Opera Ghost has been recognized as one of the most iconic moments in horror history.

According to legend, the reveal of Chaney's face was so shocking that people supposedly fainted in the audience. While the masks and productions have certainly evolved since 1925, the image and motif of the Phantom's mask have carried over time and time again.

Halloween (1978) - 7.7

Stream on shudder, amc+, hoopla, & the roku channel.

Sometimes less is more, especially in the case of John Carpenter's original  Halloween .  Considered by many to be one of the first true-to-form slasher movies, the film laid the foundation for the genre as fans know it today, including the idea of a creepy mask used to identify its escaped killer.

Before horror movies relied on a massive quantity of guts, gore, and viscera, there was a time when all one needed for a slasher movie was a mask, a sharp knife, and some suspenseful music. Since then, many horror characters have tried to follow Michaels's example, even the likes of Jason and Ghostface. At the end of the day, the Shape walked so they could run.

We Finally Know The Origin Of The Ghostface Mask In Scream

Ghostface in a school

When "Scream" first tore its way into theaters back in 1996, it instantly immortalized Ghostface in pop culture, and the villain became a modern horror icon. He stands next to the likes of Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees as a mask-wearing psychopath (or psychopaths, as the case may be) who isn't afraid to brutalize his victims. His popularity largely comes down to the simplicity of the outfit, which is made up of the white face mask and a black cloak. And of course it lends itself to the central mystery in the "Scream" series, because it's an outfit which completely hides the killer's identity.

The costume itself creates a legacy throughout the franchise, as several killers all don the Ghostface identity to hunt Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) for one reason or another. It all starts when Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) decides to dismantle Sidney's family, because her mother has an affair with Mr. Loomis — ultimately driving Billy's mother away. He plans his killing spree with Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and the pair use their horror obsession to create an iconic costume which would mask their faces as well as striking sheer terror in their victims.

In real life, though, where did the Ghostface mask come from? It is very similar to the painting by famed artist Edvard Munch's "The Scream," obviously — but ultimately Wes Craven found it when he was working on pre-production for the 1996 movie.

They got the rights for the mask

Because the mask is such an important visual in "Scream" there was obviously a lot of pressure during pre-production to get the right look for Billy and Stu. And in a recent IGN featurette which celebrates the film's 25th anniversary, screenwriter Kevin Williamson revealed that the crew stumbled onto the mask when they were looking at filming locations. "No one could agree on a mask and I remember we were in a location scout, and we found Ghostface ... in a box of stuff in a garage ..." he said.

The writer went on to say that director Wes Craven spotted the mask's similarity to Munch's iconic painting, saying that he "immediately looked at it and said, 'This is like the famous Scream painting.' And so we took that to our production and we said, 'Riff on this... make something like this.'" Although that didn't solve the problem straight away, because the studio kept rejecting the numerous designs that were similar to the iconic mask. "They must've done 20 different designs. Every one of them was rejected by the studio."

But the team finally settled on a brilliant solution, "and finally we were like, why don't we just get the rights to this mask?" So the original Ghostface mask was easily marketable because it was already an established mask, and it added a real-world level of terror since it's something that teenagers can easily get hold of.

Hopefully the mask is still just as scary when the fifth "Scream" film arrives in theaters on January 14, 2022.

How 'Scream’s Ghostface Mask Was Chosen

The creepy Ghostface mask has been with us for six 'Scream' films, but the story behind its creation was simple happenstance.

Some of the best slasher franchises are known for thing above any other: their killer's iconic look. If you don't find a right look that scares the audience, nothing else matters. It's why the blank face of Michael Myers in his white painted William Shatner mask has helped to carry the boogeyman through thirteen Halloween movies . It's why the hockey masked Jason Voorhees is still so popular, even though a Friday the 13th movie hasn't been made in fourteen years. The same goes for the Scream franchise. These films are even more dependent on the killer's look. While Michael and Jason's look can vary a bit in the films, it's okay, because we still know who's underneath. With Scream , there's a different copycat killer under the Ghostface mask each time . The look has to stay the same, and stay scary each time, for the mask is the connective tissue that holds each film together. Scream hit it out of the park with their mask choice, but it's a choice that came about by accident.

The Ghostface Mask Was Discovered After Being Found in a Garage

It's ironic perhaps, yet it makes sense, that the masks of Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Ghostface all came to be by happenstance, for we can't force fear. It finds us when we least expect it. As Scream 's writer, Kevin Williamson , tells it in a clip for the film's 25th anniversary release , "No one could agree on a mask, and I remember we were on a location scout, and we found Ghostface. It was in a box of stuff in a garage that we were location scouting, and we asked the owner if we could take it because Wes [ Scream director Wes Craven ] immediately looked at it and said, 'This is like the famous Scream painting. And so we took that to our production, and we said, 'Can you make something riff on this, and see if you can make something like this.' So they must've done twenty different designs and every one of them was rejected by the studio, and finally we were like, 'Why don't we just get the rights to this mask?' because in the script it did say it was a dime store Halloween mask. And so that's exactly what we found."

Not only do you have the finding of a mask here, but also the film's title, for through much of production the film was called Scary Movie ( hence why the parody film has that title ). To change the film's title to Scream to fit the look of the mask, which is based on the famous Edward Munch painting called "The Scream", is a perfect choice.

The Production Crew for 'Scream' Tried To Create a Mask That Riffed on the Ghostface Look

Williamson is not exaggerating about the number of similar masks the production crew tried to create first. The mask they first found was mass-produced mask by a company called Fun World. The title of the mask shows that it didn't know how famous it would one day be, as it was simply named "Peanut-Eyed Ghost." The production team set to make something similar yet different enough to not be "Peanut-Eyed Ghost." They all kept the long face and mouth, but almost all of them then went in a completely different direction, giving the mask eyeballs and ears and skin, wild hair, rotting flesh, exposed brains. The ideas looked more like something from Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Hellraiser than what Ghostface would be. One look at them and it's no wonder why they were all rejected.

The Ghostface mask works because of its simplicity. It has the blank face of Michael Myers, but as if pulled apart, which is in essene what Scream was doing, pulling apart slasher tropes and taking us inside a meta world.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, sadly the last he would give before his death that same year, Wes Craven spoke about his love for the Ghostface mask. “I knew it in my bones that [Ghostface] was a unique find, and I had to convince the studio that they had to go the extra mile to get it.”

The Creators of 'Scream' Fought To Keep the Ghostface Mask in the Movie

In another interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scream producer Cathy Konrad spoke about how the crew had to fight with the Weinsteins over keeping the Ghostface mask in the movie. "The controversy, which is pretty notorious, had a lot to do with the ghost mask. They felt like things looked flat. They felt like things were unexciting, that the mask wasn’t scary. I was getting calls early in the morning that were very demanding about ensuring that things change... What was being asked of us was to shoot everything that we’d already shot with several other masks so that Bob could decide which one he liked best. No, nobody’s doing that. So the idea was presented, can we cut together what we have shot, and can we prove to you it’s effective?"

After the Weinsteins saw a cut of that chilling opening scene , editor Patrick Lussier said, "They immediately called out and said, 'We are so wrong. This works so incredibly well. We can’t believe how suspenseful and terrifying this is. We clearly had no idea how to look at what you were doing.' Suddenly there was money for an orchestra, there was money for all sorts of things."

Everyone involved knew they had a great look on their hands with Ghostface. This wasn't just another pale faced hulk in a jumpsuit. Ghostface was something new, which is what the film aimed to do with a slasher genre that was pretty much dead and buried. To breathe fresh life into something that has collapsed, you must do what once worked before, but with a different spin. The Ghostface mask is certainly that.

“In general,” Craven said, “we didn’t mess with the mask at all. It’s something we didn’t try to change. With Freddy [Krueger] and the New Nightmare , I felt that I probably should have stuck with the original face. [With Scream ,] we just let Ghostface be Ghostface... It would have been safer [not to change Freddy]. I’m not going to speculate in public, probably shouldn’t have even mentioned it, but you know, sometimes you realize that something’s not broken, so don’t fix it. And that was the course we took on all the Scream films: Don’t mess with that, it’s just perfect.”

For twenty-seven years and counting, Ghostface has haunted us through six films. The killers under the mask may change, but the look never has. And to think, an icon was born simply because someone on a film crew happened to see a cheap mask in a room and thought it looked good. The history of horror would certainly look a lot different had they not visited that particular house on that particular day.

Much as Jason Vorhees forever changed the hockey goalie mask Ghostface has brought fame and fortune to the Scream movie mask or is it the Ghostface mask, well really it was called “ The Peanut-Eyed Ghost,” but we’ll get to that. Since the original Scream movie the mask has taken off in popularity and there are dozens of variations, fan versions, and remakes available. In the mid 1990s it is widely considered the highest selling Halloween mask and continues to sell thousands a month and even more in September and October.

History of the Ghostface Scream Mask

Scream was originally going to be called “Scary Movie,” but after the Scream’s Ghostface mask was discovered the movie title was eventually changed to “Scream.” Mostly likely due to mask’s inspiration from the impressionistic painter Edward Munch´s “The Scream” – 1893.

Edward Munch´s “The Scream

Ghostface’s Scream mask was originally discovered at a scouting location once used by an Alfred Hitchcock film, by Marianne Maddalena. Much like there are different killers in the Scream franchise , there are different stories as to where the mask was found from a box to draped over a chair, but what remains consistent that it was discovered on a location scouting mission.

This is like the famous Scream painting Wes Craven

After the generous home owner let them take the mask the production team set to making their own variation. The script called for a mask that you might find at a “dime store” and after 20 variation attempts the team was still not able to create something satisfactory.

Finally, it was suggested that they simply get the rights to use the mask. The original mask was created by “ Fun World ” and it was called “The Peanut-Eyed Ghost.” Fun World currently sells 9 variations of the mask but they are a retail distributor so you cannot buy just one directly from them, sorry. The Ghostface scream mask was originally designed by Brigitte Sleiertin for the “Fantastic Faces” series somewhere around 1994. She noted that she was influenced by the Scream Painting but also:

I just loved all vintage animation and that fluid, almost rubbery movement Brigitte Sleiertin original Scream Mask Designer

But the saga continues. Her boss at the time, Alan Geller, has claimed he actually created the mask, but nothing has surfaced to date to prove that.

Scream the Series Masks

MTV’s adaptation of the movie franchise ran for 3 seasons . For the first two seasons the series did not use the official Ghostface Mask. Instead it ran with a variant of sorts. More of a post surgical mask, but with some reference to the original. This did not go over well with die hard Scream fans so in season 3 MTV got the rights from Fun World to use a proper Ghostface mask.

The future of the Scream mask seems certain, more variations! Until then stay creepy and enjoy the upcoming 5th release this week.

Tritone Horror Author

Tritone’s love of horror and mystery began at a young age. Growing up in the 80’s he got to see some of the greatest horror movies play out in the best of venues, the drive-in theater. That’s when his obsession with the genre really began—but it wasn’t just the movies, it was the games, the books, the comics, and the lore behind it all that really ignited his obsession. Tritone is a published author and continues to write and write about horror whenever possible.
