ICON Yacht – The Incredible $75M Superyacht

The ICON yacht is a 67-metre (221 ft) luxury yacht built by the Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts (Studio Linse) in 2009 as their first project.

She can welcome up to twelve guests in seven cabins and was last refitted in 2014, during which the vessel was extended by 5 metres.

She is currently available for charter for $500,000 per week.

ICON yacht interior

Twelve guests find space in seven cabins inside ICON. Her interior was designed by Studio Linse at the shipyard where she was built.

Her master suite is split across two levels and is unusually spacious for a yacht her size.

A Hammam, sauna, pool, and spa facilities are available on board for the comfort of the guests. Seventeen crew members find space in below-deck accommodation.

The yacht also carries a wide variety of water toys, including two regular and one stand-up jet ski, scuba diving equipment, an inflatable platform, sea bobs, water skis, wakeboards, kayaks, and paddleboards.

The ICON yacht also has three tenders that can take guests to the mainland or on excursions if required.

The interior of ICON is classy and timeless, with minimalist elements and high-quality furnishings.

Natural tones and creme upholstery throughout the vessel make the yacht appear upscale and luxurious.

Specifications

ICON is 67 meters (221 ft) long with an 11.40 meter (37.4 ft) beam and a 3.80 (12.5 ft) meter draft.

She weighs 1295 tons and comfortably cruises at 13 knots which allows her to have a total range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Her maximum speed lies at 15 knots, and she is powered by MTU engines .

RWD Design Studio worked on the exterior of ICON. They specialize in elegant and comprehensive yacht designs of mid-sized to large yachts.

She has a beautiful black and white exterior with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

She features a beach club that opens up onto the swimming platform and a beautiful infinity pool on the aft deck. Her top deck has a jacuzzi and cozy seating areas for guests.

Despite not being one the largest yachts in the world, ICON actually has fantastic deck space with generous areas reserved for sunbathing and relaxing.

Her previous owner paid a reported price of US $50 million for ICON in 2009 and is rumored to have listed the yacht for sale for US $55 million in 2016.

The yacht is available for charter at a weekly rate of US $500,000.

M/Y ‘Icon’ reduced by €10 million since mid-2016

Despite an extensive, value-adding refit in 2014, the 67.5m motoryacht has dropped in price by a further €4 million….

Image for article M/Y ‘Icon’ reduced by €10 million since mid-2016

M/Y Icon , the 67.5m Icon Yachts build, has been a lively central agency listing since coming back onto the market in June 2016 with Jean-Marie Récamier of Camper & Nicholsons – at the time listed for sale at €62.5 million.

She underwent a €6 million price reduction in September 2016 in an attempt to spur some interest at the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS). She was berthed on the end of Quai des Etats Unis – E01, one of the largest berths on the north side of Port Hercule, with the surrounding pier lending itself as a viewing platform for the bustling local brokerage stands – and looked almost guaranteed to be sold by Christmas.

But, an additional €4 million price cut now sees her asking €52.5 million, with the addition of Fraser Yachts as co-central agents. “The new asking price is a strong message that the owner will be considering offers, so if someone did want to make an offer on the yacht, now is the perfect time,” explains Récamier.

Icon was commissioned by the owner of Icon Yachts and delivered in 2010. The current owner bought the shipyard and the vessel in 2014, subsequently engaging Icon in an extensive refit that saw her undergo a five-metre main deck protraction, allowing for a swimming pool extension, expanded beach club area, a larger gym, a new Hammam and a sauna. The extension not only saw Icon increase in size, but gave the vessel a significantly improved look and “added considerable value,” according to Récamier,

“She’s proven her seaworthiness. She achieved the highest charter income out of any yacht this size in the industry last year. She did 93 days of charter on top of the owner’s use, so she has very good potential. She could have done well over 100 days if the owner hadn’t used her,” he adds.

Despite a shortage of yachts between 65 – 70m on the market, there are actually three other yachts in this LOA category that were also built in 2010 and are for sale. Nobiskrug’s Sycara V is priced at Icon’s initial listing price of €62.5 million and the two Codecasa builds, Family Day at €39.5 million and Double Down at $46.55 million.

The disparity between the asking prices is well-defined, but with Icon’s value-adding refit in 2014, her decline in price and her impressive commercial record, her position on the market looks increasingly competitive.

Ocean Ness and Project Master

What’s old is going to be new again at Icon Yachts . The Dutch outfit, known for its impressive refits and conversions , has just set about turning a humble old offshore rescue ship into a formidable global explorer yacht.

Project Master was first floated at the Monaco Yacht Show back in September, but is now in full swing after the supply vessel arrived at Icon’s Harlingen yard in the Netherlands last weekend.

The tug in question first went by the name of Havila Tigris and was delivered by Norway’s Kleven Verft in 2001, before it was sold in 2007 and renamed Ocean Ness . It was most recently part of the Atlantic Offshore Rescue fleet in Aberdeen, Scotland, but will reportedly be one of “the world’s most capable explorer yachts” once Icon is finished with it.

Ocean Ness

To help with the transformation, the yard enlisted renowned world-famous designer and naval architect Espen Øino. Although 95 percent of the original platform and superstructure will remain, Ocean Ness will gain an additional 13 feet to bring the total length to an imposing 230 feet.

She’ll gain a few more creature comforts, too. Designed for a discerning superyacht owner seeking a family-orientated vessel for long-range trips, Master offers accommodation for 12 guests across two VIP cabins, three twin cabins and one epic owner’s suite that spans just shy of 1,500 square feet. She will also offer cabins for up to 19 crew. Elsewhere, there is a sizable main saloon with floor-to-ceiling windows, along with a Jacuzzi, spa, sauna and a gym.

Like any good explorer, Master will come equipped with a full arsenal of toys, submarines and tenders that can be deployed and recovered by the vessel’s two 38-foot cranes. She will also sport a 452-square-foot expedition area and a helicopter deck that can be used for entertaining when not otherwise occupied by a chopper.

Naturally, the vessel has true go-anywhere capabilities. She will reportedly have a top speed of 14 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles. She will also be fitted with hybrid thrusters for whisper-quiet cruising at 7 knots. Eventually, the vessel could support full hybrid (diesel-electric) propulsion.

Icon says Master will be ready to master the high seas in 2023.

Boats still aren't safe from orcas as the Mediterranean yachting season kicks off and killer whales sink another yacht

  • Killer whales took down another yacht on Monday as the Mediterranean yachting season begins.
  • It's the latest incident of orcas clashing with boats, which has been on the rise in recent years.
  • Marine biologists say the orcas are likely playing and may be learning the behavior from each other.

Insider Today

The Mediterranean yachting season has kicked off for the summer — and it didn't take long for another yacht to fall victim to a killer whale encounter .

A group of orcas sank a 50-foot sailing yacht in Moroccan waters on Sunday in the latest of several similar incidents involving the highly social species that have occurred over the past four years.

An unknown number of orcas were involved in the incident, which took place in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain's maritime rescue service said Monday, according to Reuters .

Related stories

The incident is the most recent in a spate of bizarre orca encounters with boats that have been on the rise in recent years, primarily in Mediterranean waters south of Spain, where many yachts cruise during the summer months.

Two passengers were on board the Alboran Cognac around 9 a.m. local time on Sunday when they felt sudden hits to the hull and rudder, Reuters reported, citing the maritime service. Water soon started to pour into the yacht.

A nearby oil tanker came to the people's rescue, saving them from the waterlogged ship and delivering them to land.

But the yacht wasn't as lucky. The Alboran Cognac stayed adrift for a time until it ultimately sank.

Since 2020, hundreds of similar encounters between boats and orcas have been documented off the southern coasts of Spain and Portugal, often near the Strait of Gibraltar. And it's not just yachts. The orcas have also rammed into sailboats, and some mariners have even created heavy-metal playlists in hopes of deterring the killer whales — though experts say it'll do little to help .

Researchers say the clashes typically follow a similar pattern, with a killer whale repeatedly ramming into the rudder of a ship, often until it breaks and the boat is stranded. Most of the time, the ships are able to escape with minimal damage, but several boats have sunk .

While the so-called orca "attacks" may appear violent, marine biologists have said it's unlikely the encounters are actually malicious. Several experts told Business Insider last year that the orcas are probably just playing .

Andrew Trites, director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia in Canada, said ramming into the boats may simply be a "playful activity that's gotten way out of hand."

Researchers have also said the killer whales may be learning the behavior from each other through simple imitation.

A surging number of crypto owners are trying to recover forgotten wallet passwords so they can cash in after huge token rallies

  • Bitcoin's resurgence has triggered a wave of wallet retrieval attempts, Reuters reported.
  • Firms that specialize in this have noted a surge in retrieval requests this year.
  • By one estimate, around 20% of circulating bitcoin could be stuck in locked wallets.

Insider Today

Crypto holders are flocking to firms that offer services to help regain access to locked wallets in a rush to make sure they're not left behind as the sector posts huge gains in 2024.

Reuters reported that recovery requests are blowing up at companies such as the Germany-based ReWallet and US' Wallet Recovery Service. The first saw requests peak in March when bitcoin's price hit its record high of over $73,000.

ReWallet saw a 334% increase in requests from users locked out of their wallets last quarter, while WRS gained 30% this year through mid-April.

For investors, losing access to a wallet can be as simple as forgetting a password or no longer being able to complete two-factor authentication. Given the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies, tokens are stored on digital blockchains, and owners often carry both a password and security phrases to access their holdings.

According to estimates offered by ReWallet, as much as 20% of the bitcoin supply inactive and trapped in lost wallets. As of March, that amount is worth around $237 billion.

But with bitcoin's surge this year, some investors are trying to regain access to cash in on massive gains in the space. While the world's largest cryptocurrency has wobbled since hitting all-time highs in March, it's up 54% since the end of 2023.

Bullish investors have brushed the downturn off as a consequence of broader macroeconomic issues , but don't expect these to last.

Analysts from both Standard Chartered and Bernstein  continue to hold expectations of a run higher, and both expect the token to reach $150,000 , though on different time frames.

For wallet retrieval firms, the spike in interest is profitable. Upon successful retrieval, both ReWallet and WRS charge a fee of 20% of the wallet's contents, Reuters said.

Orcas again sink yacht near Strait of Gibraltar as high-risk season looms

Two people were rescued after orcas hit the roughly 50-foot Alboran Cognac 14 miles off the coast of Morocco, the 26th orca encounter in the region this year.

yacht icon owner

The boat-sinking orcas are back.

Around 9 a.m. Sunday near the Strait of Gibraltar, two people on board the roughly 50-foot Alboran Cognac reported blows to the vessel’s hull and saw damage to the rudder as water flowed into the ship, Spain’s maritime rescue agency said.

An unknown number of killer whales had struck again, after hundreds of such encounters in recent years.

Over the radio, responders told the two individuals to put on their life jackets, make sure their GPS locaters were turned on and prepare for emergency evacuation. In the meantime, Spanish and Moroccan rescue agencies began urgently working to save them, locating a nearby oil tanker and electing not to dispatch a helicopter.

After about an hour, that tanker rescued the pair 14 miles off Cape Spartel in northern Morocco, the Spanish Maritime Safety and Rescue Agency (SASEMAR) said in a news release. The boat was left adrift and soon sank.

Spain-based Alboran Charter confirmed its ownership of the sunken vessel and said the individuals were customers. The company declined to say more about what happened or who the clients were.

Iberian orcas sinking a ship is not new. Over the past four years, at least 15 orcas have interacted with hundreds of boats sailing in the waters off Portugal, Spain and Morocco, sinking a handful of vessels in seemingly coordinated ambushes. Some ships have been found with teeth marks; others appear to have been rammed by an orca’s head or body.

On average, there have been 168 interactions each year since 2020, according to Grupo de Trabajo Orca Atlántica, or GTOA, a research group studying the region’s killer whales. GTOA has tracked 26 interactions so far this year, down from 61 through a similar time frame in 2023.

It’s not clear why the orcas have recently bumped, bitten and sank vessels. Some scientists say they are simply being playful, or maybe are curious, or perhaps are coming after boats because of a loss of prey. A handful say the actions could actually be gratifying to the whales.

A leading theory, though, is one of vengeance.

This idea, advanced by a scientist who has studied the encounters, posits that a female orca suffered a traumatic run-in with a boat that led her to start attacking the vessels. And because orcas are intelligent marine mammals that learn behaviors like hunting together, others followed.

But there is disagreement over this theory.

Some scientists argue that the incidents shouldn’t be called “attacks” without knowing the whales’ motives. They fear that label could prompt retaliation by boaters, calling it potentially “harmful” to the critically endangered species with just a few dozen members.

“Science cannot yet explain why the Iberian orcas are doing this, although we repeat that it is more likely related to play/socialising than aggression,” a group of more than 30 scientists wrote in an open letter last summer. “ … When we are at sea, we are in the realm of marine life. We should not punish wildlife for being wild.”

The letter explained that orcas have been observed developing “cultural ‘fads,’” including carrying dead fish on their heads, and the incidents with the boats may be nothing more than a “fashion trend.”

SASEMAR warned that the risk of the encounters is highest between May and August, recommending that boats avoid the area between the Strait of Gibraltar to the Gulf of Cádiz to its west. It added that if a boat comes across orcas, it should not stop moving, and instead should head toward the coast and shallower waters. People should not approach the side of the boat and are barred from using measures that could injure or kill the whales.

“It is possible the behaviour, as previous fads have,” the scientists wrote, “will disappear as suddenly as it appeared.”

Icon Yachts reveals interiors of 64m superyacht concept Mission

Dutch yard Icon Yachts has offered a first look at the interiors of its 63.9-metre expedition yacht concept, Mission. First revealed during the Monaco Yacht Show 2023, the explorer comes from the drawing board of Bernd Weel Design and would be capable of carrying six tenders and RIBs, plus a submersible for three passengers and an Airbus H130.

Mission's new interiors are courtesy of Carla Guilhem , whose "softer". "feminine" style was "deliberately chosen to balance [the yacht's] rugged, hard-edged exterior."

The yacht has an innovative design that centres around modular elements that can be altered and adapted according to the use of the vessel. A representative of Icon explained: "The use of containers allows owners or special charters to adapt the vessel to their evolving needs by incorporating modular areas within or onboard the yacht".

Containers could include scientific research equipment or surplus water toys and tenders and "these dual scenarios can coexist seamlessly without altering the vessel's primary purpose". The containers would be stored in a hexagonal-styled mid-section of the vessel.

The yacht's interiors are futuristic but warm, guided by the principle that it "should be what you see through the windows that grabs the guests' attention", according to designer Bernd Weel. He added that the yacht's distinctive distribution of volume also allows for the creation of "some very special interior spaces".

"While the exterior of Mission represents the search for the unknown, the interior is designed to facilitate self-discovery, the exploration of the self," explained Carla Guilhem.

"The project embodies an 'experience-focused' design, meaning the vessel is designed to facilitate specialised expeditions, exploration and yacht cruises," continued Weel. "As for the exterior design, it showcases geometrical elements characterized by strong, defined lines. Our inspiration stemmed from outdoor products designed to withstand tough expeditions and SUVs capable of carrying various cargo items. The result is a robust, 'go-anywhere' design with a contemporary and modern appearance."

"Mission represents Icon's commitment to innovation and purpose-driven travel," said Micca Ferrero, owner of Icon Yachts. "It redefines what an explorer yacht can achieve – from sustainability and modularity to profound experiential impact. We're proud to set new benchmarks and lead the way in supporting sustainable exploration."

Mission would have a cruising speed of 12 knots and a 6,000 nautical mile range.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
