Tesla Unveils Self-Sustaining Electric Yacht

' src=

Tesla just unveiled the design for its self-sustaining, all-electric Model Y yacht, and it represents just about everything you’d expect from the extremely creative and game-changing company. After all, Tesla has already made head-turning inroads in the automotive market and in outer space, so it seems reasonable that it might venture into the marine sphere with something new as well. (See the video below.)

Elon Musk started making Tesla electric cars in 2008. This week, Tesla’s market cap is $663.85 billion, equal to that of the nine largest car companies in the world – combined. He founded SpaceX in 2002; it became the first private company to send humans into orbit last year, and it launched 143 satellites on a single mission in January – the most ever.

Tesla is not for the faint of heart. And the 131-foot Tesla yacht, called Model Y, seems to fit into the family pattern. It has a Tesla color scheme, for one thing. Then there’s the low, flowing design that sets it apart and is somewhat reminiscent of a spaceship sitting in the water.

For power, the Tesla yacht does not have to pull up to a fuel dock, or even plug into an electric circuit somewhere. The yacht is meant to be fully self-charging; it generates its own power, relying on a hydro-electric system. A turbine on the bottom of the hull charges the batteries that run the yacht. And solar panels on the top charge the batteries when the yacht is not moving.

The yacht has only two decks, with a creative aft cockpit – Tesla’s take on the current beach club trend – that can be opened wide for sunbathing, hopping into the Jacuzzi or enjoying water sports. When the weather turns, you just push a button and a massive shutter comes down to seal it off.

The lower deck is a large social area, with round tables in the center. Push a button and four chairs emerge from the table sides. Private rooms are forward on that deck; one can be a spa; others can be bedrooms. The helm also is on the lower deck.

The upper deck features a “glass room” with glass walls for 360-degree views. It has a sunken bar under foot, and tiny holes in the ceiling to look at the stars. See the video here:

Here's Everything You Need To Know About Tesla's Self-Charging Model Y Yacht

From space to the road and now to the sea, Elon Musk's Tesla Model Y Yacht is preparing to revolutionize boating.

Quick Links

The ingenious design, the arrangement of spaces in the yacht, the self-charging mechanism.

Tesla has been doing great in the automotive industry, and their new move could be in a new direction - superyachts. Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of Tesla, has been offering the world a futurism pathway . Some of his  projects include the Hyperloop , the Boring Company, SpaceX, Neuralink, and of course, the newest car models being produced one after the other by Tesla.

Reports indicate that when Musk started thinking about making a superyacht, he planned to launch a new company with a new name solely for yachts. However, as of now, this new creation is going to be established by Tesla itself. The model's name might come across as confusing as there is already a car model with the term 'Y.' The speculation is that Y stands for a yacht.

The upcoming creation is indeed a marvel to behold. Tesla keeps continuing in the journey to a technological revolution once again. Musk has come up with something that might have seemed impractical as a concept. Tesla's self-charging model Y yacht is the first electric model of its kind, and it comes with a host of attractive features.

The self-charging Tesla Model Y is the brainchild of Indian designer Dhruv Prasad . Reports suggest that Prasad had designed this beauty back in 2017, and ever since then, the Tesla company has been attempting to execute it.

Tesla's exclusive model of a superyacht is designed to resemble a squid-like form. Its sleek design ensures a bulk-free and fast-moving vehicle. The hull of this ship is about 131 feet or 40 meters long. The shape is that of a giant squid because it is narrow at the tip and broad at the rear. There is no physical wheel made of hardwood as it is all remote-controlled.

The superstructure of this yacht is like most other vessels. It covers the top deck while creating interior space for the deck below. However, this yacht's striking feature is a small deck at the back for sunbathing or enjoying the sea. The small and private deck is directly connected to the lower deck. The private deck at the end is also a perfect launching ground for small boats and water transports.

Tesla's Model Y yacht comes with two decks, one on the top of the superstructure and one below. There is no provision to build more decks because the superstructure's surface, which forms the ceiling to the lower deck, has circular holes for daylight to lighten up this space. At night or in the absence of sunlight, LED lights will lighten up the lower deck space. The floors of the decks are made of hardwood.

RELATED:  Meet NORD Superyacht: The Tuxedo'd Warship

There might be only three decks on this yacht if one considers the small deck at the back to be a separate one. However, the space on this vessel is not less. The interiors of the lower deck are massive in size. This yacht is more suited for throwing parties than for an extended stay, and the interior spaces are large enough to organize nightlife activities. There are bars and lounges for the guests to be comfortable and amuse themselves.

The marvelous circular tables in the lower deck's central region appear to have no seats. A creation by Elon Musk's team is bound to a few tricks. With a remote control system, the tables can go in circular motions to open up into seats. The upper deck is also quite spacious and open. There are glass rooms with beds, and these private areas have spa and massaging rooms as well. The captain might get their private bedroom as speculations suggest.

Last but not least is the Model Y's self-charging mechanism, which makes it stand out amongst luxury superyachts. The concept is to make this ship function on hydroelectricity and solar power.

The plan uses the turbine bearing the Tesla icon to charge the engines with the hydroelectric power produced by the ocean currents. This will keep the yacht charged as long as it is on the ocean waters. However, there is also solar energy which should work as a backup. The solar panels have been installed on the superstructure to absorb energy from the sun easily.

When the yacht is not moving, and there is no hydroelectricity generation, the ship can function upon solar energy. However, if you plan to set out on a cloudy day, that should not be a problem because the primary source of electricity for this vessel is the hydropower produced by its turbine.

Musk and his team have not revealed the cost of this yacht yet. However, it can be expected that this beast will come at a fancy price. With features like these, it can't help but feel like it will be worth it.

Where is the $700 million Tesla superyacht?

Where is the $700 million Tesla superyacht?

Remember the $700 million Tesla superyacht?

It was first teased all the way back in 2017 and momentum has been steadily building ever since.

But it’s now 2022, so where is it?

Render shows the Tesla yacht from the front

READ MORE! Elon Musk says his slightly-terrifying ‘Tesla Bot’ will be ready as early as SEPTEMBER

The Model Y yacht will be completely electric, making it silent on the water.

It will also rely on solar and hydroelectric power.

So what else gives this yacht its $700 million price tag?

The Model Y will be 40 meters (131 foot) long with two decks, two bedrooms and a jacuzzi.

The lower deck will have tables that can turn into seats with the touch of a button.

CHECK THIS OUT!

The top deck will have a bar and dancing area, covered by a massive roof with hundreds of LED lights that glow at night.

Inside, the yacht will have a circular bar, a lounge suite and two beds.

Render shows the bar and dance floor on the would-be Tesla yacht

But what truly sets this yacht apart is its electric engine and self-sustaining capabilities.

At the very top of the ship will be a solar panel that charges two lithium batteries.

It will also have a turbine that works to turn waves into energy.

Render shows how the Tesla yacht would look if it was built

Designer Dhruv Prasad created renders of the yacht in 2017 and touted it as Tesla’s next big thing.

But Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reportedly had nothing to do with the project and has never publicly backed it.

While there’s no official information coming from Tesla, nor a release date, fans desperately hope the project will be backed by the company and come to life.

And surely if Musk can successfully send rockets into space and make eerily real humanoid robots, he can make Model Y happen.

Although Prasad might have to rethink the $700 million price tag, otherwise Musk might be the only person actually able to afford it.

Tesla Yacht - The Self-Sustaining Electric Yacht

Tesla recently unveiled its design for the $700 million self-sustaining electric Model Y yacht. The vision represents everything you would expect from the creative and game-changing team at Tesla. The company has already made great strides in the automotive industry by revolutionizing electric cars and has now decided to venture into the yacht space.

The features of the Tesla Model Y superyacht

What makes the Model Y Tesla yacht worth over $700 million is the wide range of features and performance-based innovations the design promises. The Tesla yacht concept seems to carry the DNA of a true Tesla. The recently shared digital render showcases a 131-foot (40 meters) long yacht with Tesla’s color scheme and a low-flowing body, somewhat reminiscent of that of a spaceship.

When it comes to powering up this superyacht, the Tesla does not need to dock for fuel or even plug into an electric power output. The Tesla yacht is designed to be self-sustaining. Its lithium batteries are recharged in two ways: One through a turbine generating hydroelectric power placed below its hull, and second through solar panels placed on the roof of the yacht.

A large roof covers the boat’s deck from stern to mid-section and features hundreds of skylight openings that convert to LED lights in the dark, replicating starlights in the night sky. The stern of the Tesla yacht contains a small lounge area with deck chairs and a Jacuzzi. A foldable door with the Tesla logo can be extended and retracted as and when needed to cover the Jacuzzi. The starboard side of the Model Y Tesla yacht features a spa room, with the port side containing a seating area with panoramic views.

Release date of the Model Y Tesla yacht

Tesla yacht lights and design

The design of the Model Y yacht is still in its conceptual stage. Hence no official dates have been announced regarding the Tesla yacht release. But with the company’s vision of creating sustainable and future-oriented mobility, seeing a Tesla yacht in the sea is not too far from reality. This means that luxury enthusiasts might have the option book a yacht in Dubai , Monaco, or Sardinia from the Tesla series in the near future.

Elon Musk – the visionary behind Tesla

Elon Musk, the founder and visionary behind Tesla , believes in sustainability as the way forward. Companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity were founded on the principles of affordability, reusability, and sustainability. Having dominated the electric car and the space rocket-building industry, it was only a matter of time before he ventured into the marine business. However, Elon Musk is said to have no direct involvement in the Tesla yacht project. The luxury Tesla yacht is actually a concept by Dhruv Prasad, an Indian designer whose vision is to bring the boat from a concept to the sea.

Electric powertrains and the transformation of marine technology

With growing concerns about global warming and climate change, companies across the spectrum have adopted eco-friendly and sustainable methods to operate their businesses. The yacht industry is also witnessing innovation in the electric segment.

Tesla is one of the first companies to produce and sell all-electric vehicles. Their success has encouraged other leading automotive brands to add electric and hybrid vehicles into their product lines. The applications of electric powertrains are being implemented across various industries, like aircraft and marine.

Pontoon boat

General Motors acquired a 25% stake in 2021 in Pure Watercraft, a Seattle-based electric outboard motor manufacturing company, to step into the electric boat-producing business. In January 2022, the company unveiled its first product, the electric pontoon boat. It is available in single and twin outboard motor versions. The single motor model is expected to reach a top speed of 22 km/h and 37 km/h for the twin motor version.

Arc Boats & Alav Yachts

Arc Boats, another Los Angeles-based company co-founded and led by the creative team of former SpaceX engineers, is revolutionizing the electric boat segment. In March 2022, the company announced a fully-electric cruiser known as the Arc One. Alva Yachts, a Turkey-based company, has also recently showcased six different types of electric yacht concepts with their specifications and amenities.

C-8 electric boat

Swedish Tech company Candela recently announced its flying electric craft, known as the C-8. The boat uses hydrofoil wings to keep most of the boat above water, reducing drag and uses 80% less energy compared to conventional boats. The top speed is expected to be 30 knots, that’s 55.5 km/h roughly, and it can travel 93 km on a single charge.

Electric yachts and boats are the future of marine technology. Many of the established yacht manufacturers are working towards developing fully-electric boats powered by solar and hydro-propulsion technologies. Electric yachts do not compromise on standard ergonomics compared to conventional yachts but only differ in terms of the powertrain, going from combustion engines to electric motors.

Why is it important to consider buying electric vehicles?

Natural resources like crude oil are depleting. Moreover, the world that we live in is facing a serious climate change crisis. Automobiles, boats, and aircraft, among other industries, are factors contributing to the growing emission levels. To bring positive change and make the planet a better place to live, electric vehicles should become more mainstream in usage. Most nations have taken an oath to become fully self-sustaining and all-electric over the next 20 years. The path towards sustainability and reusability starts now with the adaptation of electric-motor technology.

Tesla Model Y yacht- is it worth the wait?

People relaxing on yacht

If you are looking for a Model Y Tesla yacht, you will have to wait until further announcements are made by the company. However, the project is expected to be game-changing. Yacht manufacturers from around the world are working towards building innovative, electric-powered yachts. Most people prefer to charter a yacht from luxury yacht rental companies that provide exciting yacht packages . Elon Musk wants Tesla Model Y drivers to pay to unlock more range

  • Tesla's Model Y may offer unlocked driving range for an extra $1,500 to $2,000.
  • Elon Musk said the new range provides an extra 40 to 60 miles and is pending regulatory approvals.
  • This isn't Tesla's first instance of offering increased range for an extra fee.

Insider Today

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says its recent Model Y models have more driving range than you thought — but you'll have to pay to get it.

Musk said in a post on X that Model Y vehicles built over the past few months have an extra 40 to 60 miles of range that can be unlocked, depending on the battery.

Musk said Tesla could charge an extra $1,500 to $2,000 for the upgrade and that he's "working through regulatory approvals to enable" the new range.

Related stories

Musk revealed this in response to the Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt's post about the automaker launching a new Long Range RWD Model Y.

Merritt said in the X post that the previous Model Y was discontinued.

BREAKING: Tesla has launched a brand new Long Range RWD Model Y variant in the U.S. • Price: $44,990 ($37,490 including Federal EV credit) • Range: 320 miles The previous Model Y RWD with 260 miles of range has been discontinued. pic.twitter.com/n2ZZPw3W4W — Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt) May 4, 2024

Tesla replaced the Standard Range Model Y with a 320-mile Long Range rear-wheel drive for about $2,000 more.

The EV costs between $44,990 and $49,490, depending on add-ons. Owners who qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit can get the new version for $37,490.

Tesla is known to use its remote-software rollouts to add features or make fixes to its EVs. This isn't the first time its locked an EV's range and offered access to it for an additional charge.

Tesla's Model S 70 originally had a 70 kWh battery and 220-mile range, but the company later revealed the battery pack had a higher capacity of 75 kWh with a 237-mile range, which could be unlocked for an additional $3,000.

Tesla has even disabled software features like Autopilot when someone buys one of their EVs from a third-party vendor.

When a user asked why the unlocked range isn't offered for free, Musk said , "We have to pay the bills somehow."

The decision to attach a fee to locked updates is a growing trend in the auto industry. BMW received backlash for making some of its heated seats a subscription service . Mercedes offered an add-on "acceleration increase" for $1,200 a year. Meanwhile, Polestar offered a horsepower upgrade for a fee of $1,195.

With the EV market slumping, subscriptions and unlockable offerings could provide automakers with additional revenue streams.

Tesla Model Y in new quicksilver color.

Tesla’s new sales pitch for a Model Y is pretty enticing. How does it stack up against the Model 3?

Model Y loan (new RWD Long Range variant): Tesla is now offering 0.99% APR financing if you order any new Model Y by May 31. The deal is available for qualified buyers with term lengths up to 72 months. Sounds like a good deal, right?

Well, let’s see what the real numbers are. In the small print attached to the ad, Tesla states that the Model Y starts at $44,990 before incentives. Note that this is the new variant of the rear-wheel-drive Model Y with an EPA estimated range of 320 miles, up from 260 miles. Drilling down more on Tesla’s order details page and we get hard figures — the monthly payment with taxes and fees comes to $668 a month. After the $7,500 federal tax credit, that drops to $564/month. For this deal, Tesla needs a $5,084 down payment. Even with taxes and fees, that’s not a bad deal considering the average monthly car payment in the U.S. is over $700 for new vehicles, according to figures released by Nerd Wallet in February. The monthly payments jump to $711/month if you order the AWD (dual motor) Model Y with a down payment of $5,388. After applying the $7,500 federal tax credit, it drops to $607 a month. ( Note that this is calculated for Los Angeles and that taxes and fees will vary by region.)

Model Y lease: If you lease a Model Y, it can get less expensive. Of course, you don’t own the car and have to return it to Tesla after the lease term but leases are an increasingly attractive option for Tesla consumers. With $0 (zero) down and including taxes and fees, a 36-month lease (10,000 miles/year) is $547/month for the RWD Long Range Model Y with $2,674 due at signing. That increases to $2,727 due at signing and $580 a month for the Model Y AWD Long Range version.

Model 3 loan (updated and “reengineered” 2024 model): Tesla’s loan terms on the updated 2024 Model 3 are more conventional compared to the current Model Y offer. The loan rate is an estimated 6.49% APR with excellent credit. Including taxes and fees, for a 272-mile range RWD Model 3 with a $4,500 down payment (that’s the full payment due at signing), it comes to $684 a month. For the Long Range AWD Model 3 rated at an EPA 341 miles of range, with $5,364 down, it comes to $832 a month.

Model 3 lease: Like the Model Y, the Model 3 lease can be a better deal. Tesla is promoting a $299/month deal right now for the RWD Model 3. But that does not include taxes and fees. Drilling down to include taxes and fees, with $2,999 down and an estimated $5,708 due at signing, the lease comes to $336/month. Move up to the Long Range AWD Model 3 with an estimated $5,919 due at signing and the estimated lease payment is $490/month. You can also choose the $0 down option for both Model 3 variants. That increases the monthly payments but it does decrease the amount due at signing significantly, almost cutting that number in half.

8 Reasons to Consider the Tesla Model Y Electric SUV

Even though the choice of electric SUVs is wide, few vehicles can compete with the Tesla Model Y's qualities.

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric vehicle in the world in 2022, and for good reason. The Model Y is a practical four-door electric crossover that combines great performance with the practicality of an SUV-like form factor.

This vehicle is loaded with all of Tesla's safety and convenience features and also features excellent range from its battery, making it an obvious choice for electric vehicle buyers.

Let's explore why the Tesla Model Y is a great option if you're looking for an EV SUV!

1. 330-Mile Range for the Long Range Model

The Tesla Model Y is one of the most efficient electric vehicles for sale, and it can drive up to 330 miles on a full battery if you go for the Long Range model. Tesla has been a pioneer in creating electric vehicles with great range, and planning an EV road trip in your Tesla Model Y should be a breeze thanks to the excellent range for all variants, not just the Long Range model.

Tesla pulls away from the competition when it comes to offering great performance and range at a competitive price. Other EV manufacturers' performance offerings tend to sacrifice range for outright pace, but the Model Y Performance is still rated at 303 miles by the EPA. When you factor in the Model Y's excellent range figures with Tesla's expansive Supercharger network, you have a true winner in the EV SUV segment.

2. Performance Model Is Great Value

Teslas aren't cheap vehicles, but they do present an excellent value proposition when it comes to performance. The Model Y Performance is just $4,000 more expensive than the Long Range version, but the upgrade gets you an increased top speed of 155 mph as well as other performance goodies like improved brakes.

The Model Y Performance is also very quick, with a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, which is faster than many supercars. The best thing is that you can have all this performance without sacrificing the practicality and interior space you get with the regular Model Y.

3. Instantly Recognizable Tesla Design

Tesla has done a great job establishing a strong brand identity when it comes to the design of its vehicles, and the Model Y is a great example of this. The Model Y's design is basically identical to that of the Model 3, except it's slightly taller. Both of these vehicles feature handsome exteriors and are instantly recognizable as Teslas.

The Model Y arguably wears the trademark Tesla front end better than the Model 3, and the muscular stance really sets it apart from other small SUVs. One thing many people love about Teslas is the lack of a traditional front grille, and the Model Y pulls this look off very well. The fastback-like rear is similar to the Model X, and this is a positive point because Tesla's largest SUV is a very good-looking car.

4. Low Center of Gravity Adds Stability

The Tesla Model Y benefits from its low center of gravity, which is a byproduct of the vehicle's batteries being placed lower in the car's frame. This means that the Model Y will tackle corners with more confidence than you would expect from an SUV of its size and weight. The Model Y is a heavy vehicle at 4,363 lbs, but thanks to the low-mounted batteries, it can handle it with confidence.

The Model Y is so stable that it achieved the lowest rollover risk percentage (7.9%) that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has ever recorded when testing an SUV. This means you can confidently drive your Model Y without the typical fear of rollover accidents associated with traditional SUVs.

5. Five-Star Safety Rating

The Model Y is an all-around excellent SUV, and it's also one of the safest vehicles you can buy. The Tesla Model Y earned a 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which means it passed all the metrics considered during testing with flying colors.

One of the tests looks at the aforementioned rollover risk factor, while others focus on safety assistance systems, side impact safety, and front impact safety. If you're looking for one of the safest EVs on sale , the Model Y is a great choice.

6. Sentry Mode for Added Security

Sentry Mode is Tesla's vehicle security system, and it monitors the vehicle's surroundings for any potential threats using cameras and sensors. Sentry Mode informs you via the Tesla app if a threat (like an object hitting the car or a person lingering too close) has been detected, and it even lets you watch a live feed from your Tesla's cameras to inspect the surrounding area for any potential issues.

Sentry Mode is a great feature to have if you're going to leave your Tesla parked in an area that makes you uneasy. Another awesome Sentry Mode feature is that you can use this function in conjunction with another excellent Tesla feature called Dog Mode.

7. Dog Mode Keeps Your Pet Safe

Dog Mode is one of the most useful features in any Tesla model for pet owners, who will quickly come to appreciate the peace of mind that it provides. Dog Mode works by setting the temperature inside your Tesla to a comfortable level whenever your dog is inside the vehicle.

This is a great feature to have if you need to leave your dog inside the car for a few minutes, and you can even monitor what's going on inside your car via your Tesla's cabin camera, which displays a feed of your vehicle's cabin from a camera mounted on the rearview mirror.

For many dog lovers, Dog Mode will be a major reason they end up purchasing a Tesla Model Y.

8. Minimalist Interior

There are many EVs with amazing interiors , but some of them can come across as a bit ostentatious. Tesla's interiors don't fall into this category because they're very minimalist. The Model Y features a clean, uncluttered interior dominated by the central infotainment screen. The interior is especially attractive if you opt for the Ultra White vegan leather option.

The only problem with the Ultra White interior surfaces is keeping them clean, but they look so good that it'll definitely be worth the effort. Also, a downside of having a minimalist interior that's mostly controlled from the infotainment screen is the lack of dedicated buttons for certain functions, but this is something you'll get used to relatively quickly if you use the car every day.

The Model Y Is One of the Best Electric SUV Options

The Model Y is an EV bestseller, and this is in large part due to how complete a package the Model Y is. It has excellent range, tech, performance, and practicality. If you're in the market for your first electric vehicle, the Model Y is one of the best choices available.

NIO undercuts Tesla Model Y with new $30,000 L60 EV, kicking off cheaper Onvo brand

Avatar for Peter Johnson

Chinese EV maker NIO launched the first EV under its new mass-market Onvo brand Wednesday. The new Onvo L60 electric SUV will rival Tesla’s best-selling Model Y at a cheaper starting price. Starting at just $30,500 (219,900 yuan), can NIO’s new electric SUV compete with the Model Y?

Meet the NIO Onvo L60, the latest Tesla Model Y rival

NIO CEO William Li launched the new Onvo brand Wednesday, introducing its first vehicle, the L60 SUV. Li said the new EV will rival Toyota’s RAV4 and Tesla’s top-selling Model Y as a family car.

“Defining a new standard for family cars,” according to NIO, the L60 has a pre-sale price of just $30,500 (219,900 yuan).

NIO compared its new electric SUV to the Tesla Model Y, saying it has better energy consumption (12.1 kWh/100km vs. 12.5 kWh/100km) under the same CLTC conditions.

At 4,828 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,616 mm tall, the Onvo L60 will directly rival the Model Y (4,750 mm long X 1,921 mm wide X 1,624 mm tall).

Starting at 219,900 yuan ($30,500), NIO’s new mass-market electric SUV undercuts the Model Y, which starts at 249,900 yuan ($34,600) in China.

The new mass-market electric SUV on the block

The electric SUV has three battery pack options. The base 60 kWh variant features 555 km (345 mi) CLTC range, while the 90 kWh and 150 kWh models offer up to 730 km (454 mi) and over 1,000 km (621 mi) CLTC range, respectively.

In comparison, the base RWD Tesla Model Y gets up to 554 km (344 mi) CLTC range. The AWD Long Range Model Y (290,900 yuan) and AWD Performance trims (354,900 yuan) get up to 688 km and 615 km CLTC cruising range, respectively.

Although full details are yet to be released, the L60, equipped with NIO’s in-house 900V platform, is expected to feature ultra-fast charging capabilities.

NIO-Onvo-Tesla

Onvo owners will have access to NIO’s expanding (+1,000) battery swap and public fast charging network (+25,000).

A Reuters report last week claimed NIO made a deal with BYD to source batteries for its new Onvo brand. Two sources said BYD will join CATL to supply a smaller battery pack for its new EV. Meanwhile, CALB will provide the 85 kWh battery pack.

However, when contacted by Reuters , NIO said the information was “inaccurate” without elaborating. Check back for more info soon as NIO’s new mass-market Onvo brand hits the market.

Electrek’s Take

in terms of the automotive landscape, you can see the gap between the west and the chinese widen every day. though it may be heavily state-subsidized, competition is alive and well in the CCP.

NIO is the latest EV maker (or automaker) to launch a new Tesla Model Y competitor. As its best-selling EV, it’s no surprise to see the competition looking to snag a piece of the market.

BYD launched its Sea Lion 07 last week, its “smart mid-size electric SUV,” starting at just 189,800 ($26,250). As the first EV based on its new e-Platform 3.0 Evo, the base Standard model gets up to 550 km (341 mi) CLTC range. For 199,800 ($27,625), the Long Range variant gets up to 610 km (379 mi) range.

Can NIO’s new mass-market electric SUV compete with Tesla’s Model Y or BYD’s new Sea Lion 07? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
