The competition begins July 7 through the 9th with a lay day on July 8th, and with big blue marlin and potentially some white marlin in play, teams will be looking to make the most of every day. Teams like Barracuda, which took top marlin honors in 2021 and Canyon Lady, which took overalls, could be looking to put last year’s experience to work once again.

South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown July 7-10

The Viking Ocean Showdown out of Cape May has traditionally been one of the big events for big boats at the Jersey Shore.  The big news in recent years is that the folks at South Jersey Yacht Sales have opened up this tournament to other boat owners and in other ports at the Jersey.

In an official announcement at southjerseytournaments.com , George C. Robinson, III, president of South Jersey Yacht Sales, noted that the 4th Annual South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown will run from July 7-10 and is open to other Viking, Ocean, Cabo, Albemarle, Jupiter, Invincible, Valhalla, Yellowfin and customers of South Jersey Yacht Sales.

“This year we have expanded the event, traditionally held at the Canyon Club in Cape May, NJ and now includes the Brielle Yacht Club, headquarters for the new South Jersey Yacht Sales office,” Robinson said. “We have exciting changes this year to the Cape May Venue including Captains meeting held at the Cape May Brewery, and Pool side dining after Friday’s fish day, Lay day events that have received so many positive comments, and the awards banquet at The Grand Hotel in downtown Cape May.”

According to Robinson, all transportation to and from The Showdown to the event venues in Cape May is provided by Great American Trolley Company.

As for the Manasquan River location at Brielle Yacht Club, Robinson called it an extraordinary headquarters for the Showdown Tournament citing the presence of Pig & Parrot restaurant, a Key West inspired Grill and Bar located at the Brielle Yacht Club.  “A great fishing and boating community are enhanced by the wonderful downtown which will be sure to please the entire family,” Robinson noted.

What has evolved from a fishing tournament into more of a boating rendezvous with some fishing thrown in, the Third Annual South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown attracted families and friends to the beautiful Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May, New Jersey for three days of hospitality, fishing and just plain fun. The event kicked off with a Captain’s Meeting where mounds of clams, shrimp and crab fingers as well as a few cocktails were consumed as old friendships were reunited and new acquaintances were made. George Robinson III, President of South Jersey Yacht Sales, along with his staff worked diligently to put together a schedule of events and dockside hospitality that was sure to please crew members of all ages. Two days of fishing were broken up by a relaxing Lay Day where participants could partake in fun-filled dockside activities or simply stretch out by the beautiful infinity edged pool at Canyon Club Resort Marina.

The offshore weather forecast was perfect and the fishing wasn’t too bad either as numerous billfish were caught by the tournament fleet. In the end it was Team Viking edging out Team Ocean by a score of 1200 to 1037. Leading Team Viking was Mount Laurel, New Jersey’s David Johnson aboard his JT which tallied 300 points thanks to a blue marlin released by his son Tanner Johnson. Other boats contributing to Team Viking’s winning total included Wayne, Pennsylvania’s Martin Judge aboard his Judge, and Dave Anderson of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida aboard his Kray Salts who each released three white marlin, while George Robinson III’s Polarizer from Cape May, New Jersey released one white marlin to round out the top five point winners for Team Viking.

The top three point winners in the boat category for both white marlin and blue marlin all tallied 300 points each and all ties were broken by time of catch. The Most Points White Marlin award went to Dave Anderson’s Krazy Salts followed by Jamie Diller’s Canyon Lady from Stone Harbor, New Jersey in second place, while Martin Judge’s Judge finished in third place. The Most Points Blue Marlin winner was Clarksboro, New Jersey’s Gary Townsend aboard his Lori T followed by Terry Ives of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania aboard his Baroness in second place, with David Johnson’s JT finishing third.

3rd Annual South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown

The recipe is very simple. You take the owners of Albemarle, Cabo, Invincible, Jupiter, Ocean, Viking and Yellowfin boats as well as other South Jersey Yacht Sales customers. Add two days of offshore fishing. Mix in dockside Lay Day activities including a Poker Run, Scavenger Hunt, BBQ, and other leisure family-oriented events. Hold the tournament at a beautiful full service marina in mid-July and what do you have? An exciting five days the whole family will enjoy! South Jersey Yacht Sales is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Offshore Showdown will be held July 10-13 at the beautiful Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May, New Jersey and you’re invited to be part of the fun!

Better known as a rendezvous with some fishing thrown in than a high pressure tournament, the Offshore Showdown has evolved into a relaxing event where the entire family along with their friends, including children of all ages, are welcome and encouraged join in and enjoy the boating and fishing lifestyle. Last year’s Offshore Showdown was well attended and beautiful weather, great fishing and fun-filled Lay Day events made for a memorable time for all. This year’s event kicks off on Wednesday, July 10 at 4 p.m. when Registration, Cocktail Reception and Captain’s Meeting will take place under the tournament tent at Canyon Club. Fishing Days are set for Thursday, July 11 and Saturday, July 13 with Sunday, July 14 set as an alternate fishing day if needed. Dockside dining and entertainment will be provided for participants under the tournament tent both nights beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night’s festivities will also include the Awards Ceremony as well. Additionally, Friday, July 12 is the events official “Lay Day” and will include a poolside BBQ and cocktails as well as other games and “shenanigans” for kids from 8-80!

Note this is an all-release tournament for white marlin and blue marlin and on-the-dock for tuna, wahoo and dolphin. Numerous individual junior and adult angler, boat and team awards will be presented for white marlin points, blue marlin points and each for tuna, dolphin and wahoo points.

Offshore Showdown rules have been designed to allow anglers of all ages to enjoy an offshore fishing experience while also assuring fair competition for all participants. All boats must sail and return through Cape May Inlet. IGFA equipment and angling rules apply except that a fish may be hooked by any crewmember and the rod handed off immediately to the angler who will then fight the fish until boated or released. Additionally, live baiting, harpoons, dart gaffs and green sticks are not allowed. There is no limit to the number of lines or teasers. Boundary for the tournament is 100 miles from the Cape May Sea Buoy and boats may not pass that sea buoy prior to 4:30 a.m. on fishing days. Fishing hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and all fish to be weighed must be at the scale at Canyon Club by 7:30 p.m. Fishing will be on each scheduled day unless cancelled by the weather committee by 6:30 a.m.

It’s only June and the offshore fishing season is off to an exciting start. Plenty of white marlin have already been caught off the south Jersey coast and blue marlin have made their presence known as well. Big eye and yellowfin tuna are quite abundant and dolphin have also been lurking in their usual hiding spots waiting to ambush an easy meal. Wahoo are no doubt prowling these same haunts. If you’re looking for a low-key, laid back event with something for the entire family consider joining us at the 3rd Annual South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown. You’ll have a great time on the water as well as at the dock, share some laughs, renew old acquaintances and no doubt make some new friends as well. SPORT FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP SWINGS NORTH TO OFFSHORE SHOWDOWN

DALLAS , July 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Sport Fishing Championship (SFC), the governing body of saltwater tournament fishing, announced the beginning of the seventh stop of the season, the South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown, starting July 6 . It will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

The South Jersey Yacht Sales Offshore Showdown begins the SFC's northeast swing, taking place in Cape May, New Jersey . On the leaderboard, Team Polarizer sits at the top of the Atlantic division with their second-place finish and 3,000 points from the Salt Life Bluewater Tournament. SFC will be spending the rest of the summer in the northeast with four Atlantic tournaments in the next six weeks. The temperature, current and fish all seem to be aligned for some great fishing.

"The water is warmer, and the fish seem to be here," said Damon Sacco , SFC Atlantic Division Tournament Director. "We have had some rough conditions, but we have confirmed reports of white and blue marlin out there!"

With bigeye tuna being a common catch in northeast waters, anglers requested that the species be added to SFC's Championship Fish Division. It is now included as one of SFC's four competing fish divisions, alongside mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna and wahoo, each worth $50,000 this season.

Competition began on Thursday, July 6 , with boats heading out from Club Canyon Marina starting at 4 a.m. July 7 will be a lay day, with the final day of competition being held on July 8 . Teams will celebrate and awards will be handed out at a dinner at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night .

Angling fans can catch all the action on CBS Sports Network from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday . Viewers can also tune into the into the SFC YouTube Digital Show at 3 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday . All times in EDT.

SFC tournament points accrue based on a team's placement in the final tournament standings, with the first-place team earning 3,500 points, the second-place team 3,000 points, and so forth. Placements in the tournament standings are determined from tournament-only points based on species of fish caught and released, with the highest consideration given to blue marlin, then white marlin and spearfish, and finally sailfish and swordfish.

The season schedule next brings anglers to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts , for the Oak Bluffs Bluewater Classic from July 12 to July 15 . Events thereafter include: the Tri-State Canyon Shootout in Block Island, Rhode Island , July 24-27 ; the Texas International Fishing Tournament in South Padre Island, Texas , August 4-6 ; the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland , August 7-11 ; and conclude with the San Juan International Billfish Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico , August 23-25 .
