Van DE Stadt 29 (Sea Dog 29)

Van DE Stadt 29 (Sea Dog 29) is a 28 ′ 6 ″ / 8.7 m monohull sailboat designed by E. G. Van de Stadt and built by Plans for hard and soft chine starting in 1978.

Drawing of Van DE Stadt 29 (Sea Dog 29)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Decade of ownership leads to lifetime of memories

It's been 10 years since Jim Butz first set eyes on Sea-Dog, sistership to a limited edition run of only five identical power boats - one of which was reportedly commissioned by actor Charlie Chaplin - built by Stephens Bros. Of Stockton in the early 1930s. It is still in operation today.

Back when Sea-Dog was launched, the boat gleamed of polished teak, Port Orford cedar (a rot-resistant wood grown in the Pacific Northwest) and shiny brass. More than half a century later, while other vessels have been lost to sea or simply abandoned to rot away, this salty old dog has lasted through the years - as well as through countless owners.

While it can be said that Sea-Dog has been lucky to have been cared for by its many nurturing owners, Butz will tell you that the true luck is to be given the chance to become part of this vessel's rich history. He admits that in 1987, he had initially set out to buy a new boat. However, that quickly changed. "I just fell in love with (Sea Dog)," he said. "It was such a beautiful ol' boat that all the new boats paled in comparison."

The boat is 55 feet long with a 12.5 foot beam. It weighs 35 tons and holds 1,000 gallons of fuel. According to Butz, the vessel is still running strong on its fourth or fifth set of engines - a pair of Buda military diesels used during World War II.

Sea-Dog was commissioned by H.A.B. Sneve, a marine equipment salesman. Taking from the stories he's been told, Butz describes Sneve as a man whose character was similar to circus legend P.T. Barnum. "He really was a showman," Butz said.

Sneve turned Sea-Dog into a floating showroom, which was known as "the Boat-Show-Boat." Its maiden voyage was from San Francisco up to Alaska and then down to Mexico, with Sneve stopping in countless harbors along the way, opening up all the hatches and calling out to the landlubbers to come see his merchandise.

The demonstration became so popular that Sneve named his growing business to coincide with his famous boat. Incidentally, Sea-Dog Marine Hardware is still in business today and is located in Everett, Washington.

Eventually, Sneve sold Sea-Dog to a prominent and well-known yachtsman from Newport Beach named Wesley Smith. Smith's daughter, Jannette Wills was just a debutante then. She's now in her 80s and living in Pacific Palisades. Butz said she used to come visit Sea-Dog down at the docks whenever he was there. In time, her visits became less frequent, but Butz says they continue to keep in touch through letters.

After Smith came "Ping" Boudine, who became Sea-Dog's owner from 1934 to 1940. Like Wills, he's also in his 80s now and works as a volunteer captain at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. Butz says that whenever Sea-Dog's in town, Boudine will greet him at the shore with a wave hello.

Boudine parted with Sea-Dog shortly before the war came, during which Uncle Sam took over the helm, back when registered vessels of the United States were called in by the government to serve during World War II.

If the owner turned over his vessel willingly out of patriotism and dedication to his country, many times he was rewarded with a military title and allowed to captain the ship. (But for unknown reasons, this wasn't the case with this particular owner.)

Sea-Dog was painted gray from bow to stern and equipped with a 50 caliber machine gun, which was mounted at its bow. It was stationed in San Pedro Bay, where it was used to patrol for Japanese submarines. When the war concluded, Sea-Dog was released to its owner.

Butz isn't sure what happened to Sea-Dog after that, but it sadly resurfaced again in 1979 as a derelict with no engines. Its new owner spent two years rebuilding and refurbishing the boat to bring it back to its former luster and then sold it.

Years passed and eventually, Butz met up with Sea-Dog. The boat was in such good condition that he had only to do some minor structural work to get it to look the way it is now.

Butz said he and his wife Martie have enjoyed looking after Sea-Dog, but they never claim to be the boat's owners. Butz knows that eventually he'll have to sell the vessel, just as so many previous lucky captains have done before him.

Ideally, he says he would have liked to pass it down to his children, but he realizes that wouldn't be fair to Sea-Dog. "It's too big to keep in somebody's garage," Butz said.

Butz said that not only does the boat need to be docked at a harbor, but it must have routine maintenance done by someone who "has a lot of passion" as well.

Until he finds someone though, the Butzes will continue taking care of their old friend. Once a year he and Martie, along with other members of the Classic Yacht Association's Southern California Fleet, return to Channel Islands Harbor and open up the hatches just like Sneve once did, calling out to everyone to come take a look. They never know who will be stopping by.

Went on the sunset cruise, highly recommended! It is a real sailboat experience with Captain Bob. He takes time to explain how the ship works and makes sure you are comfortable. Money well spent!

I'm a HUGE fan- I wish there were more stars to give. I've gone sailing with Captain Bob a number of times over the past couple years, and each time I've had a wonderful, relaxing and fun time. It's like a mini-vacation! Capt. Bob is extremely friendly, and even if you're a bit nervous about being on a boat (as some people are- not me, of course) he's the kind of guy whose knowledge and calm about what he does will put you at ease right away. Lake Michigan is BEAUTIFUL, don't be fooled by what you see close to shore. The prices for the daily sails are extremely reasonable, and you can even bring your own music, food & drinks on board, to further personalize your experience. Kids would love the adventure of being on the "high seas", and adults can have a romantic jaunt away from their worries at home, or a snazzy get together with their friends. Sea Dog is always willing to accommodate my plans to go sailing; whether I'm just doing a spur-of-the-moment thing, or planning something in advance. I went recently on one of the 100-degree days we just had, and let me tell you- it was a fantastic way to cool off! Capt. Bob even sent me a text message reminding me to make sure I drink plenty of liquids & stay hydrated prior to my sail. How awesome is that guy?! I would go sailing with them every single weekend if my social schedule would allow me to. Check out some of the pictures I took aboard The Blue Chip (and the new yacht, The Quinn Marie) and book your sail today!

The four of us had an amazing first time experience sailing. Captain Bob was very welcoming, warm, and friendly. He has an amazing personality. He made everyone comfortable and provided a relaxed environment. He was very accommodating offering water and blankets if cold. He narrated the steps that were being taken as Autumn was diligently being a very efficient deck hand. We all look forward to coming back to sail again!

Had a great time on the water with captain Bob and his first mate Chris. Not only did they explain things well, they took us around the area and showed us the sights of the city. Will do this again when back in town.

Had a great time on our sailing adventure with Captain Bob. He was very friendly and informative. The boat was clean and spacious. Will definitely be going again soon!

Come for a great time! Very friendly staff who is always trying to make you feel comfortable and safe while still having fun (letting the boat go at 30°-45° angles if you want.) Would do again!!

Capt. Bob and crew-mate William were the best. Sea Dog Sailing charters the Blue Chip, a 1991 Catalina 34 cruising yacht and is U.S.C.G. examined for charter service - with all required safety equipment. We took 5 people out for a sunset cruise on Lake Michigan and had a wonderful time. Capt. Bob was very friendly, informative about his boat, Lake Michigan and had wonderful tales of various sailing adventures on the lake. As we sailed out from the marina, with the small motor running we got comfortable in the cockpit of the boat. As we sailing onto the lake, Capt. Bob cut the motor as crew-mate William put up the mainsail and we were off. We topped 7.9 knots that day and had a really great time. As the sun was setting we came back to the marina, cruising by the Milwaukee Art Museum. I highly recommend Sea Dog Sailing for an type of chartered sailing adventure.

We had an excellent experience with Capt. Bob. The sail itself was wonderful and communicating with Capt. Bob was done with ease. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking to take a sail!

Photo of Chris S.

My girlfriend and I came to Milwaukee from Minnesota to watch the Twins play the Brewers. We wanted to try something knew on our spare time, so we thought sailing would be fun. We had an absolutely wonderful time sailing on Lake Michigan with Captain Bob and his wonderful crew. They were very fun to be around and were very accommodating. We were fortunate to luck out with such a great time upon the sailboat, considering the Twins kind of put a damper on our Milwaukee weekend. Sea Dog was the highlight of our weekend, and we're planning on coming back again next summer. Considering a segway tour of Lake Michigan costs $45, the price we paid to sail Lake Michigan has to be the best value in the area. You can ask my girlfriend, I'm extremely cheap and I wouldn't typically waste time recommending something, but Sea Dog Sailing was completely worth it and I recommend it to all.

Photo of Sarah S.

We were in town to see family and since we had never been sailing we decided to take the family sailing. Very friendly, nice, fun, and great memories. We will be back.

Featured Instructor: Captain Stacey Brooks

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Instructors , women on the water

Stacey Brooks seems to always be on a boat. She recently completed a sailing adventure in Cuba and will be sharing her stories from that journey with ASA readers in the near future. Her school, Sea Dog Sailing is based in The British Virgin Islands. If there was ever a person who personifies what ASA is trying to promote with the “Women on the Water” campaign it is captain Stacey Brooks and her ever valuable first mate Allison Beauvais.

Captain Stacey is this month’s ASA Featured Instructor.

Our Featured American Sailing Association Instructor: Stacey Brooks

ASA Avatar

Stacey Brooks: My most memorable students are people who get sick just like I did and I tell them my story. The next most important students to me are the ones I see light up when they finally grasp something. My favorite two students of all time are Mel and Tony Eades. After a class with me in the BVI they went home, quit their jobs, sold their house, sold their cars and began sailing on a cat throughout the Caribbean. Lots of people say they will and don’t. This couple did and it changed their life as well.

Taking one chance in 1995 shifted my world and I can’t express how happy it has made me or explain in full the things I have seen and experienced! One thing is for certain, I am a proud ASA instructor. I am an even more proud captain and ASA school owner!

Stacey Brooks: Sailing can and will literally change your life. It will challenge you, scare you and remind you that life is short and beautiful. Get out there!

Sea Dog Sailing, Inc is proudly owned by USCG Captain Stacey Brooks (ASA Instructor since 1997). She teaches in different venues around the world and continues to take students and customers to exotic sailing destinations each year. In 2019 she is traveling, along with her first mate Allison Beauvais, to Cuba, Spain, Thailand, and Greece. MEET THE CREW Captain: Mike Marier Chef/First Mate: Julie Marier November 1 2023 -1 April 30th 2024 Mike and Julie met soon after high school and have been inseparable ever since. While raising their family, Mike & Julie took family vacations up north which always meant time on the water boating, fishing, skiing, biking and lots of great memories with the family. They also traveled to tropical destinations to escape the cold winter months. When they took a family trip to the Virgin Islands they knew they would be back for good at some point. They bought a sailboat in Florida after their family was raised, spent time there and made the jump to come back to the islands after selling their home and everything they owned in 2019. They have run successful charters in the Virgin Islands ever since. Mike grew up in the land of 10,000 lakes and took full advantage of as many opportunities as he could to hit the lakes. As a boy and young man he spent many summers up north at the family cabin taking advantage of all water sports. It’s here that Mike developed his love of being on the water. Mike has been an entrepreneur most of his life and has, along with Julie run a personal training business, owned a fitness center and worked in the oil fields. In his free time, Mike enjoys working out, reading and ´wrenching´ on things. Mike looks forward to showing his guests a great time and all the amazing experiences the islands have to offer. Julie was born in Minnesota and moved to California as a young girl. It was then that Julie fell in love with the ocean and the peace and serenity it brought her. Julie’s love of cooking and food started at a young age as her mother was a wonderful cook and teacher and had Julie in the kitchen with her. Because of her early start, Julie worked in the service industry in many different fields after moving back to Minnesota. Julie loves to cook a wide range of foods but her favorites are comfort style, using fresh local ingredients. Julie’s hobbies are crocheting, cooking, working out with Mike and people watching :). Julie looks forward to having you and your family join them for an unforgettable experience. They hope to help others create lasting lifetime memories in their dream destination.

We are grateful to sail with you For this is a dream come true!

Can It Ever Get Any Better!

Our last evening we stayed in Caneel Bay on St. John, the end of a glorious week of adventure, beauty and fun. This was our first time to the Virgin Islands, the first time on a catamaran and I find it hard to imagine it can ever get better than this. The natural beauty of the islands can only be seen in their entirety from the water. The many deserted coves and beaches, where we walked in the soft sand and snorkeled in the crystal clear water, were an up-close and immersive experience second to none. Our son loved the underwater sea scooters and the wake board. Our oldest daughter would go out on the stand up paddleboards, and our youngest daughters jumped from the upper deck in between relaxing and handing out. Mike was the perfect boat captain. Everything on board worked well, there was plenty of water for showers and all the toys and activities were already for use. He sailed us to the best of the islands, taking into account the weather and waves so we had a comfortable and enjoyable trip. On the longer stretches Miked showed anyone who was interested how to sail the catamaran, how to go fast and avoid the other ships and boats while getting to where we wanted to go. Mike led our weeklong vacation while being kind, pleasant, and confidentially in command. This certainly made it easy for us to relax and enjoy the experience. As Mike led the boat, Julie led the accommodations and especially the kitchen. meals were the highlights of each day! The quantity, quality and presentation of breakfast, lunch, snack and especially dinner was wonderful. Juslie is an outstanding chef. The cuisine was fresh and flavourful while at the same time being hearty, healthy and a joy to behold! She kept the living area neat, clean and attractive! While exploring both the American and British Virgin Islands we felt like we were in a floating luxury hotel. Every day provided a new and unique experience and the transit from island to island was an ever changing seascape of stunning natural beauty. Every person in our family rates this as one of our best vacations ever. The only thing that might make it better was if we had a small convoy of 2 to 4 catamarans shared with friends and family, each crewed by a couple as thoughtful and capable as Mike and Julie. Thank you!

Thank you for the awesome week on the Sea Dog! The food was amazing! Thankful for all your knowledge about the islands. We are blessed to have spent the week with you both.

Championed This Entire Memory For Our Family

GUEST REVIEW TO BROKER We arrived home safe and sound last night. I wanted to let you know what an amazing time our family had on the SeaDog. We were treated like family by Nick and Kate and our son absolutely adores Nick. He spent so much time helping Nate fish and educating him on things, that we saw Nate come out of his shell and have great moments of dialog with Nick. We couldn’t be more happy than this. Kate prepared amazing food all week and waited on us hand and foot. The SeaDog was very clean and accommodating. We couldn’t have had a better crew. We highly recommend Nick and Kate, they championed this entire memory for our family. Thank you.!!!!

BROKER PROVIDED REVIEW

Yacht Name: Sea Dog Rating of Yacht & Crew: 5 Was the yacht comfortable and clean? Yes very good layout and very clean. Was the yacht well ventilated? Very - we kept the doors open during the day and the AC was nice and cold at night Was the crew friendly and accommodating? Our crew was absolutely amazing. Captain Nick was the perfect balance of fun and safe. I knew about 30 mins in to being on the boat that he had our safety as his number one priority and that he knew sailing inside and out. He took us to great spots and when he wasn’t busy sailing he was busy cleaning up, getting toys out, helping Kate, or answering any of our million questions we were always throwing at him. He fished with us every night and that was definitely a highlight of the trip. Kate…no words. I think I speak for all of us when I say we wanted to take her home with us! She was the sweetest, kindest hostess we could ever imagine. Her food was delicious and her drinks were even better! She worked so hard the week we were there and you could tell she loved every minute of it. It would be hard to imagine doing this trip with anyone else. Was the food good and well presented? Yes the food was amazing. Every meal was delicious and our Chef, Kate, took into consideration all of the likes/dislikes we each told her about. Additional comments about the yacht and crew? We can’t imagine a better time than the one we had onboard Sea Dog with Kate and Nick. Every aspect was perfect - from the planning with VI Sailing to the trip itself. The boat was beautiful and safe and our crew took the best care of us. It was hard to leave on the last day. Cruising Area Did you like the area you chartered in? Yes! We were so glad we were about to visit both the USVI and BVI in one trip.

Our Crew Was Absolutely Amazing

We had the best week ever on Sea Dog with Captain Nick and Chef Kate. Every aspect of the trip far exceeded any expectations that we had. The boat was beautiful. Very spacious and the lay out was perfect for our group of 6 to be together or spread out when needed. Our absolute favorite feature of the boat was the flybridge. It was where we ended every day and I can’t imagine being on a boat without that space. Our crew was absolutely amazing. Captain Nick was the perfect balance of fun and safe. Absolute Best Way To See the USVI & BVI

Mike and Julie were so great! They were simply lovely people who were thoughtful, kind and anticipated what we would want. They take good care all the way around. We were pampered beyond expectations. (Our only disappointment was on Sunday following our return home we were left to our own devices in our homes to mix our own drinks, prepare our own meals and clean up after dinner! HaHaHa ) I will close with a heartfelt thank you for sharing your beautiful sailing vessel with us.

Leopard 50ft - 2019

Yacht description.

Sea Dog is a 2019, 3 cabin catamaran. The cabins are queen size – one is a master which has an additional seating area and a larger bathroom. The remaining cabins each have walk around beds and bathrooms with separate shower stalls.

Décor throughout is muted and relaxing. The salon has comfortable seating and an indoor dining option. Outside there is a lovely forward cockpit which is accessed from the salon, with shade and the perfect view. The rear cockpit offers al fresco dining and more seating. Upstairs the top deck is probably the most popular spot on the boat with seating and a 360-degree view.

Rendezvous diving

sea dog sailboat

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.

Best Sailboats For Dogs

Best Sailboats For Dogs | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

‍ Dogs have accompanied sailors for centuries aboard all kinds of ships. But which modern sailboats are best (and safest) for dogs?

Bringing a dog aboard a small sailboat can be nerve-wracking. Is it safe? And how much room do you need for you and your dog to be comfortable?

There are several sailboats that are spacious, stable, and safe enough to bring a dog aboard. The best and most comfortable sailboats for dogs are the Catalina 385, the Catalina 30, the Corbin 39, the Nordic 40, and the Island Packet 35.

There are many other sailboats that work well for dogs, but these five vessels stand out for several reasons. Each one meets the basic requirements to keep a dog and its owners safe and comfortable at anchor and at sea. Factors such as length, beam, freeboard height, cabin layout, and deck configuration are all essential to consider before choosing a sailboat for you and your dog.

We sourced the technical specifications of each boat from reliable design and floor plan guides. Additionally, we researched the best sailboats for dogs through owner testimonials and experience.

‍ Can You Bring a Dog on a Sailboat?

Many people wonder if it's possible to bring dogs on the sailboat. Will the dog be safe? Is it legal to bring a dog on a sailboat? These are reasonable questions, and the answer is often yes.

It's perfectly legal to bring a dog on a sailboat. And in many cases, it's completely safe provided the correct measures are taken. Life jackets for dogs are available, and many breeds (such as labs) truly enjoy being in and around the water.

Keeping your dog safe on the sailboat is fairly straightforward. But what about taking a long trip on the open ocean? Things get more complicated when you need to bring your dog into the cabin, where space is at a premium.

What About Large Dogs?

Keeping a small dog aboard a sailboat is fairly straightforward, as the space required for their food, along with room for them to move around is less difficult to find in many sailboats. However, large dogs require much more space than smaller breeds.

While this may seem obvious, what's not always clear is the dramatic difference in cabin size required for large dogs. A 20 or 30-foot sailboat may be adequate for a small breed, but a larger dog could require a boat nearly twice the displacement to be comfortable.

What Makes a Good Sailboat for Dogs?

So, what makes a good sailboat for dogs? Generally speaking, dogs require a large deck to move around on. But not just any deck will do—the flatter, the better, as raised spaces can make it difficult for your dog to move around without stumbling.

Another factor to consider is the layout of the rigging. Some sailboats have excessive lines on and around the deck, which can cause your dog to get tangled up often. Flush-deck sailboats from the 1960s and 1970s are a great option, as they typically avoid both of these issues.

But it goes beyond these particulars. There are many important factors to consider when choosing a sailboat for you and your dog. Here are some of the most critical design aspects to take into account.

The most obvious consideration when choosing a Sailboat for your dog is its overall size. Generally speaking, larger boats are better for all dog breeds, as dogs need exercise both on deck and in the cabin.

That's not to say that your dog needs space to play fetch down below—just that you need enough room to get around without your dog getting in the way. And your dog also needs more than one place to be—meaning sailboats with a single berth just won't cut it.

The ideal size for a dog-friendly sailboat is 30 feet and up, regardless of the breed. Larger dogs do well in 40-foot sailboats, as this is generally the minimum amount of space required for both people and animals to coexist comfortably in the same area.

Interior Layout

The interior layout is critical, second only to the overall size of the boat. Dogs prefer open spaces, and many dogs need to be able to comfortably turn around in a central walkway.

Dogs aren't quite as coordinated as many people think, especially in one particular way—walking backward. Some dogs require months of training to comfortably back out of tight spaces, though it does occur more easily for some.

This means that your dog needs an area wide enough to maneuver. The entire boat doesn't have to meet this condition—but there should be several spaces below where your dog can turn around.

Sailboats with large sitting areas (usually around the dinette) typically have enough space. This is especially true in layouts that don't separate the galley from the dinette.

If you're unsure about the dimensions of a potential sailboat purchase, try to find a floor plan layout and look for open space. This space will also allow you and your dog to move past each other when moving about the cabin, which is a necessity if you're going to live together comfortably for an extended period of time.

It's also important to consider nooks and crannies, especially if you have a small dog. You should ensure there aren't any opportunities for your dog to work its way behind interior trim or into dangerous areas, such as the engine compartment. Be sure that these areas don't have any open entry points that your dog could sneak into or get stuck in.

Cockpit Configuration

Most of the time you spend sailing is outside in the cockpit, and there's a good chance that your dog will want to join you there. That's great! But it requires special care when choosing a sailboat.

Sailboat cockpits should be deep and wide enough for your dog to stay with you safely. The lower the cockpit walls, the greater likelihood that they'll fall overboard. Large cockpit seats are a big plus—it's good to ensure your dog has somewhere long and wide enough to stretch out completely.

Ideally, they should have an elevated place (like a seat) to make themselves secure and comfortable. Cockpit floors are wet and dirty and generally not a place where your dog will want to be. Remember, all the water that washes over the deck inevitably drains through the cockpit floor.

The deck itself is another important consideration that we've already touched on briefly. In short, the bigger and wider the deck, the better. The deck itself is a great place for your dog to hang out. Your dog should have plenty of room to move about when you're at anchor and at least a few places to stretch out and take a nap.

Avoid cluttered decks if possible. As we mentioned previously, excessive lines, blocks, and tackle can cause your dog to get tangled up easily and potentially cause rigging issues.

The best stern type depends on the type of dog and its abilities. Swimming dogs should have a low stern that's easy for them to climb aboard and jump off of. Additionally, a low stern (such as the type on many modern sailboats) will make it easier for you to haul your dog back on board.

For dogs that can't swim, it's best to limit their ability to get off the boat in the first place. Traditional sailboats with high sterns and deep cockpits are the safest option. And luckily for you, these vessels are the most common and affordable of the lot.

Freeboard Height

Freeboard height is another concern, especially if you have smaller dogs. The freeboard is the rough distance between the waterline and the lowest point of the deck. A boat with a high freeboard is typically drier, which limits the chance of your dog getting wet or being washed off the deck.

However, water-friendly dogs do better on boats with lower freeboard. This lowers the distance they have to jump to get in the water (at anchor) and also makes it easier to keep track of them and haul them back on board. It also makes it easier for you to climb aboard when you're not at the stern.

Best Common Sailboats for Dogs

Considering all the factors mentioned above, we put together a list of the ten best sailboats for dogs of all kinds. These vessels are safe, spacious, and feature dog-friendly layouts and materials (provided they haven't been too heavily modified). Here are five of the best sailboats for dogs.

1. Catalina 385

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-385"}}

Catalina is one of the most widely-recognized sailboat manufacturers, and they've been in business for decades. One of their most dog-friendly models is the 38-foot Catalina 385. This is a modern sailboat that's packed with premium features and several dog-friendly perks.

The sailboat has a wide beam and a uniquely open interior floor plan. The center of the cabin is a large space with several side areas that provide plenty of room for you and your dog. There are also several areas for your dog to lay on the floor without impeding the main walkway between the companionway and the berthing space.

The deck isn't completely flush, but it's wide, and the cabin top is lower than many other sailboats. The rigging is clean and contained, and the cockpit is wide and deep enough to comfortably accommodate you and your dog.

  • Medium Dogs
  • Medium-Large Dogs

2. Catalina 30

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-30"}}

The Catalina 30 is one of the company's most-produced sailboats and also one of the best affordable sailboats for dogs. It has an impressively-sized cockpit for a 30-foot sailboat and also plenty of space down below for small to medium-sized dogs.

These sailboats have a spacious floor plan that makes it easy for you and your dog to find a comfortable place to relax. Additionally, a wide V-berth in the bow (and a door to separate it from the living spaces) provides a single space large enough for everyone.

3. Corbin 39

{{boat-info="/boats/corbin-39"}}

The Corbin 39 is a fiberglass sailboat that has sleeping accommodations for six people, with a double V-berth in the bow along with two long sitting areas in the main cabin. That leaves plenty of room for you, your dog, and several passengers in this spacious 39-foot sailboat.

And for stimulus-sensitive dogs, the Corbin 39 has a special feature that many other boats lack. It features foam below the waterline for sound dampening, and it also works as thermal insulation for sailing in extreme temperatures.

4. Nordic 40

{{boat-info="/boats/nordic-40"}}

The aft cockpit is open and uncluttered for easy movement and gives you and your dog plenty of space. The Nordic 40 has two staterooms and plenty of interior space, which is a big plus if you want an area for guests (or need to store things away from your dog).

The Nordic 40 is an ideal boat for large dogs, as it has a wide 10-foot beam and a deep cockpit. The deck is also spacious and has plenty of flat, non-slip spaces for your dog to move around on. Small dogs may get caught in the nooks and crannies of this boat, but it’s a spacious and comfortable home for most medium and large breeds.

5. Island Packet 35

{{boat-info="/boats/island-packet-35"}}

The Island Packet 35 is a cruising sailboat that has a full keel cutter rig and sleeps up to seven people. This vessel, though smaller than some of the others on this list, is extremely stable and designed for comfort.

There's plenty of space on deck, in the cockpit, and down below for you and a medium-sized dog. The vessel has two staterooms, a large galley, and a spacious main salon. The deck is an excellent place to hang out with your dog, and the deep cockpit is big enough for your dog to stretch out safely and be sheltered from the spray.

Sailing with Dogs – Our Guide to Taking Dogs on Sailboats

sea dog sailboat

If you’re heading out on the water, it’s only natural that you’ll want to take man’s best friend with you for the trip. But how does sailing with dogs work? Is it advisable and what are the best pieces of kit you need to keep your four-legged pal content?

We’ve put together a guide that will put your mind completely at ease. The key to sailing with a dog is in the preparation you put in before you head aboard, so read our guide to find out:

  •  Which dogs are best suited to sailing?
  • How to slowly encourage your dog’s adventurous spirit
  • The necessary safety measures for your boat
  • The importance of checking the rules of your charter company
  • Dog health tips whilst sailing
  • How to deal with potty trips

Our tips are aimed at people who want to take their dog on a sailboat as part of a holiday, as well as local boat owners who want to involve their pet in their hobby on a more regular basis.

Eager to learn more about sailing with a dog? Let’s dive right in.

A short history of dogs on boats

It’s more than 800,000 years since humans first built seaworthy boats for exploration, migration, and conquering new lands. Since then, dogs have long been our faithful companions, and have enjoyed many a sea voyage as trusted sidekicks assisting in hunting and guardianship. An extraordinary dog in the Second World War was even trained to identify enemy submarines approaching.

Which dog breeds are best suited to sailing?

sailing with dogs

Humans have bred dogs depending over centuries depending on the purpose they have needed them for. Some were bred for hunting, others for farming or domestication. In modern times, people have bred for shows too. As a result, several dog breeds are extremely comfortable with being in water, either due to the location they’re associated with or their role in the fishing industry. For example, it’s known that Labrador Retrievers were originally bred to jump into icy-cold water in the Newfoundland region of Canada and bring back fish-filled nets.

The following breeds of dog are some of the best who are suited to water:

  • American Water Spaniel
  • English Springer Spaniel
  • Portuguese Waterdog
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Labrador Retrievers

If you have one of these dogs, then great. But if you have another breed entirely, does it mean you’re not able to go sailing together? Absolutely not. Just follow the tips in this guide to ensure your trip is a great success.

Prepping your dog on land

If your pet hasn’t yet found his sea legs, then you’ll need to start your preparation on land. Every dog is different, but if you know that yours is quite timid or downright afraid of water, then your journey to setting sail together may take a little longer.

If your pup is already an adventurous type and accompanies you on plenty of different types of journeys, then they’ll likely be comfortable with the transition to water. But if your dog rarely breaks routine and the furthest you’ve ever been together is the local park, then it’s worth trying some new things together to build confidence and strengthen the trust between you.

You can try going hiking and walking alongside lakes, streams, or rivers so that they’re comfortable with being next to, or even paddling in the water. This will also give your pup a chance to get used to new noises, different smells, and any sudden movements out in nature.

Once you’re confident that your dog is ready to try sailing, it’s important to take it slow. Start by renting a boat for a short trip on a river or lake to see how they acclimatise. You should always give your four-legged pal plenty of time to settle in on board before you set sail.

All of these steps could take time, so don’t be discouraged if it’s not going well on the first trip. But remember that if your dog is genuinely distressed by water and isn’t responding to any of your encouragement at all, then you might want to reconsider sailing with your dog and perhaps plan a different type of terrestrial adventure together instead.

Checking the rules of dogs on sailboats

If you have your own sailboat, then you should be ready to set sail as soon as you’ve carried out some basic health and safety checks of your boat. But if you’re using a charter company to hire a sailboat, then you should check their rules and regulations before you embark on your doggy voyage together.

This should be done in advance of paying a deposit or balance for your trip as some companies flat out refuse to let dogs onboard their boats. Others have rules based on the size of the dog, and some will charge an extra daily fee, or double the cleaning bill at the end of your trip.

You should always be able to find a charter company with an appropriate boat for your trip, but remember to check in advance to avoid disappointment.

Overseas regulations

If you’re travelling overseas with your pet or will be crossing international waters, then the rules of sailing with dogs become more complex. Every country in the world has its own individual requirements relating to quarantine and vaccinations. A list of requirements you may need to meet include:

  • Microchipping your pet
  • Recent rabies vaccination
  • Animal health certificate
  • Tapeworm treatment
  • Quarantine on arrival

You should always check with the country you’re travelling to beforehand and if you need to fly during any part of the journey, make sure that you have a carrier that is suitable for the flight. Some countries require dogs to be on a lead in public, so this another rule you should check before you begin your boating trip.

Wearing a dog life jacket

Once you’ve got through all the red tape and are confident that your pup is ready to set sail, it’s time to prepare your boat. Even the best dog swimmers can quickly run into trouble in deeper water, which is why a floatation device, otherwise known as a doggy life jacket is an essential item for your sailing trip.

How do you know if your life jacket of choice is a good design? Make sure that it has both a neck closure and adjustable body straps that can accommodate your dog’s build. The fit will need to be snug without hindering their mobility.

Each manufacturer will have a different sizing chart, which you should read when measuring your dog. Typically, you can expect to measure their:

  • Chest (the girth around the rib cage)
  • Neck (the wide, lower point around the shoulders)
  • Length (from the base of the neck to the tail base)

All of these measurements will help you choose the safest flotation device for your four-legged friend, but you should always ask the manufacturer if you have any specific questions.

Installing a safety net

To prevent your dog from ever having to rely on their life jacket, it’s a great idea to install a safety net so they’re unable to fall in. This works by stretching the net across the railing of your boat, with different options available depending on the size of your boat. Even if your dog is well-trained and wouldn’t voluntarily jump in, the movement of the boat could easily set your pet off-balance and send him over the side unless you have a safety net erected.

This Nautos guardrail netting is made from knitted mesh for a strong design.

It’s a useful addition to your sailing kit as it also prevents children from falling overboard if you’ve brought the family with you. Additionally, it keeps other bits of kit such as fishing equipment firmly on deck in rough waters.

Keeping your dog safe on deck

The water isn’t the only risk to dogs on sailboats. You should plan how to keep them safe on board too. Unfortunately, boats have rarely been designed and built with canine passengers in mind. Moving between decks can be decidedly tricky for dogs, particularly if there’s surface water making the floor slippery.

If your dog is too large to comfortably lift around the boat, then you’ll need to install some anti-slip matting so they can roam about the vessel without fear of a nasty fall.

You can also bring a portable dog ladder or ramp for a safe and easy climb or descent. A collapsible ramp design will also help them get on and off the boat.

Hydration when sailing with dogs

If you’re going on a sunny cruise with your dog, then the weather will be one of the biggest risks to your canine pal. Your dog could easily become overheated which puts them at risk of sunstroke and dehydration.

To prevent this from happening, make sure you provide your dog with a cool, shaded area on your boat for them to relax in. They should always have access to a stable bowl of water that doesn’t splash around.

Remember that a thirsty dog will try to drink salty seawater which can quickly put their health at risk. Stock up with more water than you think you will need before you set sail so you can replenish your doggy’s fluids as much as required.

Wondering how you can tell if your dog is suffering from dehydration or overheating? Follow this checklist of symptoms and seek advice from a veterinarian as soon as possible.

  • Continuous, noisy panting
  • Eyes are glazed over
  • Disorientated
  • Weak, limp, or collapsed
  • Racing pulse
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Dark red gums and tongue
  •  Seizure
  • Excessive drooling

If you do feel that your dog needs to cool down on your boat, then don’t soak him completely. You can simply cool the legs and groin area with wet blankets or use a coolingmat for maximum comfort.

Seasickness in dogs on sailboats

Another common problem you may come across when sailing with dogs is one that we humans can also relate to. Seasickness!

Motion sickness is more common in puppies than in more mature dogs, although there can be some overlap between the symptoms of anxiety at being on the water and actually being seasick.

Dogs won’t be able to tell you that they’re feeling queazy, but watch for tell-tale physical signals including:

  • Licking their lips
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Whimpering or whining

Do you suspect that your dog may be affected by motion sickness, for example, if they also don’t travel well by car? In this case, a vet may be able to prescribe a prescription before your trip depending on how severe the symptoms are likely to be. Remember again, that you need to watch that your dog only has clean water from their bowl and should not be allowed to drink salty water which will make them feel worse.

Safety on land

If you’re planning to return to shore periodically, perhaps to let your dog stretch his legs, go on a hiking adventure, or simply to enjoy the solitude of a quiet bay, then be aware of the dangers that can be found on land.

Broken glass, rusty metal, pest poisons, and even some wildlife all have the potential to cause harm to your dog. Never set sail with your dog without taking a well-stocked first aid kit on board with you. This should contain the following items:

  • Bandages (crepe or self-adhesive)
  • Non-adhesive absorbent dressings
  • Surgical sticky tape
  • Cotton wool
  • Absorbent gauze
  • Dog collar (shaped like a lampshade)

Try to keep your vet’s number handy before your trip so you can call for advice. You should also research local vet contact details in case you need urgent assistance.

Potty training

Safety comes first, but now that you know the best practices for sailing with a healthy dog, you’ll want to know about potty training your pup. Where exactly can they do their business when you’re on the water?

There are two suitable options available. You can either train your dog to do their business on board, or else you can anchor ashore at several points during the day, so they can stretch their legs and find a spot on land.

If you choose to head to the mainland, then you’ll probably need to do so every three to five hours. However, if you know that your dog has a slightly different routine to this, be sure to tailor your journey around their regular timetable. Try to plan your stops so you know where you can anchor your boat safely.

If you prefer to stay on the water during your sailing trip, then you’ll need to train your pup to do their business in a designated spot onboard. This isn’t quite as easy with dogs as it is with cats for example. But it’s certainly not impossible when sailing with a dog.

Many experienced people who take their dog on board their sailboat use a special piece of carpet or artificial grass which they tape down to the deck. You can encourage your pup to do his business by using some special motivational potty treats. If the place you’ve designated isn’t working but you notice that your dog keeps going in a different area of the boat, then simply move your grass to their preferred spot. It may take some practice after years of going where they please on land, but they’ll get into the routine of boating life.

Designated quiet space

If your dog has his own bed or quiet spot at home, then you’ll need to replicate this area on your boat. This is particularly important if they’re displaying signs of being anxious about the switch to boating life. Bringing their favourite blanket and laying it down straightaway in their special spot, will help them adapt quickly to the new environment.

Any preferred chew toys or comfort items should also be brought along, not least because you can leave your pup to unwind without distracting you from sailing. If you suspect that your dog may experience nerves, then bringing along a weighted blanket can help to put them at ease.

Stock up on supplies

Last, but not least, remember to stock up on plenty of dog food and treats before you set sail. If your pup has a favourite brand of food, then remember to pack enough for your voyage. Even if you do plan to anchor up and grab some grocery supplies, you might not be able to get the right brand you need. The last thing you need on your sailing trip is a fussy dog who is off his food.

Bring along plenty of treats too to motivate your pet towards excellent behaviour onboard. Pack these bribes and it won’t be long before he’s mastered the art of being a dependable sailing companion.

Time to set sail with your dog

Now you’ve finished this guide, you’re ready to start planning your next doggy-friendly sailing trip. Remember that the key is to do plenty of prep work and to stock up on the necessary safety equipment before you set sail. We thought about it and did it September 21, 2013. We would like to share how we did it and explore options on how to visit this great city.

Because we were staying in St. Petersburg, we chose a "Day Trip".

We found a guide on the internet and contacted her. We asked her the best way and day to visit Moscow. We agreed Saturday would be good and the Sapsan train is the preferred way to travel. We booked our e-tickets for the train on the internet.

The day began early with an accuweather check. It showed brilliant sun all day - in St. Petersburg (1 of only 35 days a year) and rain all day in Moscow. Walking to the Metro station we began the long ride down to the underground train.

The early morning Metro

This is the Moscow train station in St. Petersburg

And here is the Sapsan at rest

After scanning our tickets and a walk through a metal detector ( which we set off) we walked to wagon #3. Showing our passports to the attendant , we were seated by 0630 and ready to ride !

After we were seated we received this overhead greeting

Russian Railways welcomes you aboard ! We soon found out that every thing would be in Russian first and then in English. Our launch time was reached - and we were off.

Here is some information about the Sapsan

http://www.russiantrains.com/en/page/sapsan-train

As the sun began to rise we saw some fog , but a clear sky just outside of St. Petersburg @ 125 mph.

We settled in for the 4 hour train ride to Moscow.

Appreciate your posting of these visuals in connection with your rail trip to Moscow and back. As noted below, we did this "adventure" in 2008 via the air routes. Keep sharing your nice and interesting visuals. Below are a few of mine showing the "prizes" to be enjoyed in Moscow. Fortunately, we had three days on our cruise stop in St. Petersburg, making this one-day trip work better.

The high-speed train connection does make a big, big difference currently. We did the one-day Moscow trip in 2008 by the air connections. I'll offer up some added background, along with various pro/con factors for your consideration. My wife thought it was lots of money, but she viewed it as very much worth it after completing the trip as a "once in a lifetime" experience.

CON FACTORS : It's a long day! Leave the ship early (greeted by a small welcoming band dockside); get back to the St. Petersburg airport around midnight and back to the ship a little before 1 am. Moscow is a super large city of over ten million people. There has been huge growth in the suburbs of this city during the past decades or so. Traffic and time from the airport to the main downtown takes about an hour, but the train takes your directly into the heart of this large city. Since we had to drive in from the airport, we had a good feel as we traveled into town through the coach windows about the “new Moscow” with its suburban growth, commerce, advertising, capitalism, big box stores, etc.

PRO FACTORS : Moscow has its unique history, sights and sites, from Ivan the Terrible up through Lenin, Stalin and the new Russian leaders of today. After a long ride in from the airport on the outer edge of this large metro areas of 17.3 million (with 10.5 million in the city), we stopped at a new hotel for coffee/tea/break. Then, we rode the Moscow subway and saw a couple of their very unique and artistic stations. Stalin at the time called these stations “People’s Palaces”. This Moscow Metro was first opened in 1935 and now has 182 stations, 12 different lines,187 miles of routes and carries seven million passengers each weekday. It’s the world second busiest subway system. This subway ride offered a good sampling of real life for people who live and work in Moscow. We then saw more key places enroute, including the home of the Bolshoi Ballet, KGB Headquarters, various Stalin-era buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kremlin with its 19 historic towers. WOW, we were really there!

Inside the Kremlin are three key “super stars”. First, was the State Armoury with its spectacular Faberge Eggs, plus so many carriages, crowns, gowns, jewels, etc. Second are the various historic Cathedrals within the Kremlin Walls, plus the Tower Bells, Icon art, etc. This includes the Cathedral of the Annunciation built in the 1480’s and having such spectacular wall murals and icons. Third, was the Great Kremlin Palace with its spectacular reception halls, inlaid wood floors, gold and more gold, fancy ceilings, etc. The Czars were crowned here, plus the current heads of the Russian government, etc. The size and scale of these areas are hard to describe in words, let alone reflect and capture the history that has happened in some of these rooms dating back to the late 1400’s. We have seen lots of great palaces all over Europe, but this is something above and beyond for the eyes, heart and brain.

Then, we saw more building inside the walls of the Kremlin. We went outside of the Kremlin Walls and walked next door to adjoining Red Square, seeing St. Basil’s and the re-done Gum Department Store. Red Square is so historic, especially having grown up seeing the military May Day parades there, visuals of Lenin’s Tomb, etc. Have the words “spectacular” and historic been used too much? Maybe, but it fits for many of these unique places. St. Basil’s was built 1555–1561 on the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible). It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (266 feet tall) in 1600 inside the Kremlin Walls. To be able to “CONTRAST” and compare Moscow and St. Petersburg during these three short days adds to the benefits of seeing both of these great Russian capital cities. Each is a very different and special city.

We finished with dinner in the Central Writers’ Club, a one hundred years old mansion made into a restaurant with crystal chandeliers, rich wood panelling, fireplaces, and antique balustrades.

Is one day too short and limited? YES! You can, however, do and see lots in only that one short day. You get a small sampling above. How often do you get to Russia? The Cold War might not come back in full force, but there are going to be increasing and revisited tensions in future years involving Russia and getting access there. They have done this tour many times and have its details down well and timing perfected. Let us know any questions, thoughts or reactions.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow. This square separates the Kremlin, as the former royal citadel and the current official residence for Russia's President, from a historic merchant quarter. Red Square is often considered the central square of Moscow and all of Russia, because Moscow's major streets originate from here. The name Red Square comes neither from the color of the bricks nor from the link between the color red and communism. The name came about because of a Russian word that can mean either "red" or "beautiful". This word, per Wikipedia, has the meaning "beautiful", was originally applied to Saint Basil's Cathedral. Then, later, the meaning was transferred to the nearby square. It is believed that the square acquired its current name in the 17th century. Red Square was the leading stage and trade center for Moscow. Ivan the Great decreed that trade should only be conducted from person to person, but later these rules were relaxed and permanent market buildings began appearing on the square. After a fire in 1547, Ivan the Terrible reorganized the lines of wooden shops on the Eastern side into market lines and part of that transitioned into what is now GUM department store that adjoins this famed square.:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

The domes of the historic church inside the walls of the Kremlin:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

The famed KGB (Secret Police) Headquarters in Moscow where many entered and did not exit (alive) during the 1950’s and 1960’s:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels inside the famed State Armoury in Moscow. One of the oldest museums in Moscow, it was established in 1808 and located within the Kremlin Walls. It originated as the royal arsenal in 1508 during when it was in charge of producing, purchasing and storing weapons, jewelry and various household articles of the Tsars. There are ten Fabergé eggs in the Armoury collection (all Imperial eggs). This is the most Imperial eggs, and the second-most overall Fabergé eggs, owned by a single owner. The Trans-Siberian Railway Egg is a jeweled Easter egg made under the supervision of the Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé in 1900 for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. It was presented by Nicolas II as an Easter gift to his wife. The exterior of the 1900 Trans-Siberian Railway egg is made of onyx, silver, gold, and quartz, and is decorated with colored vitreous enamel. The lid of the egg is hinged, has an overlay of green enamel, and is decorated with inlaid leaves of acanthus. On top of the lid is a golden three-headed eagle in gold with the Imperial Crown. The interior is lined with velvet. A route map of the Trans-Siberian Railway is engraved in silver across the face, with major stations marked by a precious stone, forming a belt around the egg. The egg is supported by three griffins made of gold-plated silver on a stepped triangular base of white onyx.:

Scuba and Terry, thanks for sharing the information and beautiful pictures.

One question... I assume the one day tour is similar to the St Petersburg tours, in that you don't need to obtain a Russian Visa if you are booked through a Russian tour agency?

Appreciate the nice comments and good question from our friend in Las Vegas. YES , if your cruise is there three days or less . . . A ND . . . you are with a licensed travel/tour firm , then there is no need to do a Russian Visa. You cannot take that one- or two-day train to Moscow and back unless you either have a visa or are with an appropriate such firm traveling with you.

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Celebrity Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik . Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 144,153 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

The announcements on the train requested turning off phones. We quietly greeted and introduced ourselves (In Russian) to our table mates . It seems that we were the token foreign passengers and we quickly realized that on the train (Like most public transport), people don't usually speak unless they have a question or know one another. Even when they do it's respectful of others privacy with no loud talking or phone calls." I could get used to this" I thought to myself. Reading was the norm and listening to music was socially acceptable. Out came the Eyewitness Travel Moscow and cued Al Stewart's Road to Moscow on the mp3. After a quick nap and a snack we noticed that the movie Moscow does not believe in tears was playing on the TV and people were seemed surprised that we knew the movie.

The next thing we knew, the train was arriving in Moscow !

Exiting the train , we headed for the station.

Irina was waiting for us at the end of the platform and it was starting to rain. " Welcome to Moscow and it's weather" she said. " Nine months of expectations and three months of disappointment" she remarked. We headed to the Metro for a tour.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Metro

As you can see , at 11 in the morning and we still had an empty Metro. Saturday or Sunday is the way to tour Moscow with a minimum of crowds

The first station that we visited was Komsomolskaya which is named for the Communist Youth League

Here is a mosaic from the ceiling

And at the end of the station was comrade Lenin

The Kievskaya Station is dedicated to the friendship between Russia and the Ukraine and is named after it's Capital - Kiev

It features idealized mosaics in the Soviet realism style

The Ukraine was the bread basket of the Soviet Union so agriculture and handicraft is displayed prominently in it's mosaics.

Because it is on the ring line #5 , it connects with #3 and #4 line and can get very busy.

Thank you for these wonderful reviews. We are going to St. Petersburg for two days on the Brilliance next May. We have decided we want to go to Moscow for one of the days....your great photos make me want to go even more now! :D

The train ride of 8 hours (4 hours one way) and only 8 hours in Moscow doesn't sound perfect. Should we look for a tour guide who will take us by plane? Any recommendations? We would not want to undertake this on our own.

Congratulations on your upcoming TA and Baltic cruise and thank you for your kind comments. We did a TA in April of 2009 , followed by a 10 day stay in St. Petersburg. It's really a great time for the weather. Going to Moscow from St. Petersburg on a 2 day stay is going to be an either/ or proposition. Unless you can do a post cruise stay , it will be either Moscow or St. Petersburg . If its your first visit to Russia , we would recommend that you stay in St. Petersburg. It will save you travel time and money and there is more than enough to do in 2 days. If you decide on Moscow , many of the cruise ship offer this trip. We don't normally use or recommend the ship's tours but Moscow would be an exception. Few if any private tours offer this option for 2 days. If you chose to DIY with a Visa you could fly and meet the guide in Moscow and stay overnight. The problem with a 2 day stay is that Sapsan leaves before your ship arrives in port on the first day and arrives after your ship leaves on the second day. A more radical plan that we considered was to jump ship (With the Captain's permission) with a Russian Visa and stay longer in St. Petersburg / Moscow. Because we wanted more time in Russia , we cancelled our post TA Baltic cruise and just stayed in St. Petersburg.

Our last Metro stop before entering Red Square was Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Square of the Revolution). The hall contains life size sculptures of 'everyday people' who made The Revolution and the Metro possible.

Rubbing the nose of this border guards dog is said to bring good luck. I was amazed to see how many people touched this dogs nose after we stepped away.

This last 'every day person' is Lyudmila Pavlichenko who was credited with 309 kills as a sniper during WWII.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko

Upon leaving the Metro station we were greeted by a steady rain and it was time to pop the umbrellas. After entering through The Resurrection Gate we stopped to take a picture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberian_Gate_and_Chapel

And turning around , there is was - Red Square ! I felt like like Dorothy opening the door in OZ. All of my childhood fears of ICBM rockets , goose stepping troops , 1 PM air raid sirens on Saturday , bomb shelters and duck and cover drills at school flooded my memory! Focusing on the task at hand , I had to learn to shoot pictures with one hand while holding an umbrella with the other. The first picture is Marshal Zhukov , a war hero

mounted on a horse , in front of The Historical Museum.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgy_Zhukov

Kazan Cathedral was consecrated in 1636 by Prince Pozharsky and stood for 300 years until Joseph Stalin destroyed it in 1936. This faithful reconstruction was completed and consecrated in 1993.

There was a sea of umbrellas watching the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I could only get a picture by holding the camera overhead. If you look carefully, you can see his rifle beneath his raincoat.

The crowd thinned as they quickly marched away

But I sprinted ahead to capture a video clip

It was raining harder so we headed for GUM in hopes that the rain would abate.

GUM (pronounced goom) was the name given to this building after the Revolution in 1921. It was built in 1893 and currently has over 1000 shops. A banner proclaims 120 years.

This was one of my favorite photos of our trip. Watching a game of Bridal tug of war.

Maybe they were here shopping for this Mother In Law Cake. It features poisonous mushrooms on top ( I think they are sugar but didn't try them ).

We moved on to Yeliseev's Gastronom. The original store is in St. Petersburg.

http://russiapedia.rt.com/prominent-russians/business/grigory-yeliseev/

This is their souvenir shop

With no sign of the rain stopping it was time to pop the umbrellas and head out to Red Square. The square is about 500 yards long.

The small platform in front of St. Basil's is called The Lobnoe Mesto. It is where the Tsar and patriarch would address the people at various times.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobnoye_Mesto

Even in the rain and overcast skies the cathedral is striking !

To the right of the photo is The Savior's Tower. It was the main entrance to the Kremlin and stands 230 feet tall.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasskaya_Tower

We thought we would go inside of St. Basils to dodge rain and see what the interior looked like. Here's the porch.

Fancy doors

Iconostasis

And here is a view of Red Square with everything labeled

Wow! What else can be said. The photos and your trip are amazing! We have booked a Baltic cruise for June, 2014. We had not considered going to Moscow and after reading your blog, we are still not. BUT if we ever are lucky enough to come back sometime, it will definitely be on our TO DO list! Thank you for sharing the pics, vids and memories!

Hi Jim and Pam, how was the Fall in Michigan this year ? DW is a Michigander and we met in Michigan. We love spending the fall there. Congratulations on your Baltic cruise. We fell in love with St. Petersburg when we visited there on our 2006 cruise. You will have 2 full and enjoyable days there. Is it possible to do a post cruise stay in Moscow or St. Pete. ? We wished that we did when we first went because there a lot that we missed and wanted to see things at our own pace. It would be much quicker and cheaper to fly from Copenhagen than another transatlantic flight from Michigan. If you have not seen our thread on St. Petersburg - you may want to check it out.

In front of St. Basil's Cathedral is a statue of a butcher Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitniy Pozharskiy. When Moscow was occupied in 1612 by the Polish Army , they raised a volunteer group to repel the invaders.

To me, the most amazing church in Moscow is The Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

After Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812 , the strategy of retreat and destroy (scorched earth) was employed by Russia to allow Napoleon to enter Moscow. He found it in ruins - burned by the residents. When winter arrived on October 19, Napoleon began the long retreat to France. Along the way with no food , the winter and the Russian people attacking , the French troops were decimated. 600,000 troops had entered Russia and less than 60,000 left alive. To celebrate the victory Tsar Alexander ordered the Cathedral built to thank Christ for the victory.

In 1931 Joseph Stalin blew up the cathedral to build a skyscraper - The Palace of the Soviets , that would be taller than The Empire State Building. It would feature a giant statue of Lenin on top. The plans were abandoned when Germany invaded in 1941. After the war , it became a giant pool when construction was needed for housing. It was rebuilt beginning in 1995 , and was completed in 2000.

There was a crowd at the door and we waited in the rain and cold. It was beautiful inside (no pictures allowed). We stayed about an hour and the crowd had left and we took the second picture in the rain. A quick Metro ride to the train station and we said goodbye to our guide Irina.

We returned to St. Petersburg on the Sapsan 1st Class. It included dinner , a drink and internet connections. The internet only works with a Russian phone service - so it did not work for us. The chairs reclined , so we got a nice nap after a long day.

Ok, so now that I spent hours looking at and reading your posts, I see why you suggest a post tour. There is no way to see everything in only 2 days. But thank you so much for your information on SPB. We are really looking forward to our visit and want to get the most out of it.

We had snow flurries today in Michigan. Our fall was pretty short which means winter will be pretty long. We will survive though because we have 2 cruises to look forward to... Caribbean in February and the Baltic in June!

Thanks again for the great photo review and tips! I'll keep reading...

It sounds like a couple of great cruises coming your way. The Western Carib. is our most common trip cause we dive in all 4 ports. It's a great way for you to beat that long winter ! My wife's sister (from Bay City) does a girl cruise every winter to beat the cold and avoid the Spring breakers. We would encourage you to prioritize in St. Petersburg - you won't get to see it all in 2 days so pick the best for you. Please know your camera well before you visit ! The sites will come fast and furious so you want to catch them all. I had some new lenses and made some rookie mistakes and muffed some good shots ! If we can answer any questions - give us a holler. Joe

Thank you for your great report and photos! We will be in St. Petersburg for 3 days next June on Legend of the Seas. I arranged private tours in St. Petersburg on days 1 and 3, and to Moscow on day 2 - all with Alla Tours. I previously visited St. Petersburg in 2005, and am especially looking forward to visiting Moscow this trip.

Good to know that Nancy has these great Russian locations on her future, upcoming list. That assumes she survives her earlier “down under” visit, Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Celebrity Solstice sailing, departing Sydney, going from Australia to Auckland/NZ doing 14 days on this ship we loved in the Med in June 2011. Nancy will be "riding" with us on this Aust-NZ cruise. Will share more on Russia with Nancy while we are sailing on this early 2014 adventure.

For details and visuals, etc., from our July 1-16, 2010, Norway Coast/Fjords/Arctic Circle cruise experience from Copenhagen on the Silver Cloud, check out this posting. This posting is now at 123,372 views.

Sounds like the perfect plan NancyIL ! Maybe something old and something new in St. Petersburg and something Red in Moscow! Did anyone watch Miss Universe in Moscow ? We enjoyed seeing the locale shots at night - something that we missed on our day trip. It also confirmed what we observed when we were there. Moscow like St. Petersburg has the majority of it's main sites located in a very small area. Catherine's Palace , Peterhof and Moscow require an amount of travel time equal or greater than the time spent there. There is the additional cost to Moscow as well. But it's great that you have 3 days and have seen some of St. Petersburg before so it made your decision easy. If you look at the map of Moscow you will see that most of the sites are very close together

and can be seen in a day, but Petersburg requires several days or more for maximum enjoyment.

Red Square and The Kremlin are next to each other and , in the lower left corner, is The Cathedral of Christ the Savior - all within walking distance.

We will be taking the Sapsan from Moscow to St. Petersburg next summer. Is there much of a difference between first class and coach? We're booked in coach as the TA says there's not all that much difference for the money. Also, do you have any opinion on whether to ride on the left or right, facing forward, headed to St. Petersburg? I want to get the best views.

Israel-Gaza latest: Iran blasts West for war in Gaza; Netanyahu making 'mistake', Biden warns

The US president has said he disagrees with Israel's approach to the war. It comes after Benjamin Netanyahu doubled down on his pledge to go forward with his invasion of Rafah. Listen to a Daily episode on how the war could be worsening Yemen's humanitarian crisis as you scroll.

More on ceasefire talks now, and Israeli officials say they have agreed to concessions allowing the return of 150,000 Palestinians to the north of Gaza.

Two officials with knowledge of the talks told Reuters this formed part of a US proposal for a truce.

In return, they said, Hamas would be required to give a list of female, elderly and sick hostages it still holds alive.

Hamas said yesterday that the latest proposal passed on by Eqyptian and Qatari mediators did not meet demands, but that it would study it further before responding.

Hamas wants an end to the Israeli military offensive, a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and permission for displaced Palestinians to return home.

Israel's immediate aim is to secure the release of hostages seized on 7 October, and it says it will not end the war until Hamas no longer controls Gaza or threatens Israel's militarily.

Clear differences remain between Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu on Israel's plans to launch an offensive in Rafah, an official in the prime minister's office has said.

They told NBC News that the leaders, who spoke over the phone, were aligned on the need to "repel the Iranian threat".

The comments came after Mr Biden said Benjamin Netanyahu's approach to the war was a "mistake".

"The president's statement was apparently made days ago, before the call with the prime minister," the official said.

"In the course of the call it was clear that differences on Rafah have not been resolved but the leaders are aligned on the need to bolster humanitarian aid and repel the Iranian threat."

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry has said 33,482 Palestinians have been killed by Israel's military offensive since 7 October.

A further 76,049 people have been wounded, the ministry said.

The updated figures come after 122 people were killed and 56 injured in the last 24 hours, it said.

The ministry's figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters, but it says the majority of those killed were women and children.

By Alex Crawford , special correspondent

Yemen's fishermen set out at dawn to take on seas where they know they could face pirates, smugglers, and now Houthi militant missile attacks.

"We're always scared," Awad tells us as he sits on the edge of the wooden fishing boat.

"Because you don't know when you will be attacked."

The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden have become the new battleground in the spreading war in Gaza.

Read on here...

Earlier today, we reported on Iran's supreme leader demanding Israel "be punished" for the killings of Iranian generals in Syria.

We can now bring you Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's comments in full, as he went on to condemn the West for the war in Gaza.

"It was expected they [would] prevent [Israel] in this disaster. They did not. They did not fulfil their duties, the Western governments," he said.

He said the Israeli airstrike in Syria demolished Iran's consulate, calling it akin to an attack on Iranian territory.

"When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our territory," Mr Khamenei said.

The strike killed 12 people: seven Iranian Revolutionary Guard members, four Syrians and a Hezbollah militia member.

Israel has not acknowledged any involvement, though it has been bracing for an Iranian response to the attack.

By Alex Rossi , international correspondent

Joe Biden's remarks don't so much represent a shift in tone but a strengthening of his criticism of the Israeli approach.

It's clear also from the undertone that there is now no love lost between the American president and the prime minster of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The comments, it should be noted, were recorded last week - two days after seven aid workers were killed in a botched Israeli attack.

Mr Biden has become increasingly frustrated by the mounting civilian casualties and the desperate humanitarian situation in Gaza.

But the comments go beyond that and speak to the lack of Israeli strategy for the day after the war.

From Washington, Israel appears to be making many of the same mistakes the US made after 9/11.

Driven by anger and revenge they've smashed up Gaza but have no plans for the peace.

Hamas may have been badly hit but they've not been defeated.

An insurgency out of the ashes seems probable without a concrete plan.

Israel, at the moment, seems unable or unwilling to countenance what such a bargain would look like.

Palestinian families have been visiting the graves of loved ones in Rafah.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks.

Its figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters, but it says the majority of those killed were women and children.

The Spanish prime minister has called Israel's military actions in Gaza a threat to world stability, the Times of Israel reports.

Speaking to the Spanish congress, Pedro Sanchez said Israel's response was "disproportionate" and risks "destabilising the Middle East, and as a consequence, the entire world".

Recognising a Palestinian state was "in Europe's geopolitical interests", he said.

The commander of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has said the danger of escalation on the Lebanon-Israel border is real.

UNIFIL's Aroldo Lazaro called for the "cessation of hostilities, and a move towards a permanent ceasefire and a long-term solution to the conflict".

Lebanon and Israel have exchanged fire over the border since the start of the war in Gaza.

Most recently, Israel's military said it killed a commander of Hezbollah's secretive Radwan Force in southern Lebanon yesterday.

Israeli officials demand the Radwan Force withdraw from the border area in order to allow tens of thousands of evacuated Israelis to return home.

Hezbollah has said it will stop firing rockets into Israel once a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.

Eurovision chiefs have condemned war-related online abuse, hate speech and harassment of participating artists.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) called out "targeted social media campaigns" against multiple musicians, against the backdrop of the "unquestionable pain" in the Middle East.

Israel's representative at the competition, Eden Golan, has reportedly received death threats, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The decision to include the Israeli broadcaster Kan was the sole responsibility of the EBU, he added.
