AM : Our staff meet you at the airport at Labuan Bajo with oshibori and refreshing mineral water and then accompany you to the harbor to board your vessel. The Cruise Director welcomes everyone aboard while the chef prepares a delicious meal to be served on deck.

PM : After lunch, we set sail towards Sabayor Kecil where you will spend the afternoon relaxing on pristine white sand beaches, cooling off in the vivid turquoise ocean or exploring coral reefs which teem with marine life.

After an hour’s cruise to the northeastern tip of Komodo Island, the first day comes to a perfect close with an easy 20-minute trek up the peak of an island of called Gili Lawa Darat. Here, you can experience exquisite sunset views offering the first of many Instagram-worthy moments.

Prana by Atzaró's 6-Day Komodo - Day 1 - Set sail to the beautiful Komodo National Park

Gili Lawa Darat, Komodo Bay & Pulau Kalong

AM : Wake up, lie in or enjoy an early morning yoga session on the top deck followed by a leisurely breakfast. Today we visit Gili Lawa Darat’s long stretches of deserted beaches where you can embark on a spectacular snorkeling adventure amongst pristine coral gardens.

Some of the best dive sites in Komodo National Park including Castle and Crystal Rock, Shotgun, The Passage and Lighthouse are in this area. Alternatively, enjoy any of the other water sports onboard or relax in the spa with signature massage.

Afterwards cruise to Komodo Bay, passing Makassar Reef which is one of the most remarkable places in the Komodo archipelago. This location is renowned for attracting giant manta rays, schools of large fish and an array of funky critters, making for unforgettable snorkeling and diving.

PM : In the afternoon continue to Komodo Bay, where dependent on sea conditions, you disembark for an exhilarating drift snorkel. The current carries you effortlessly across the reef giving new meaning to ‘going with the flow'.

Back onboard Prana, kick back and relax as we set sail for a short cruise to Bat Island, locally known as Pulau Kalong. Get ready for a sunset with a difference where thousands of fruit bats take to the skies at dusk to hunt. A true National Geographic experience and one which you will never forget.

Prana by Atzaró's 6-Day Komodo - Day 2 - Dining Table Set Up

Rinca Island / Padar Island

AM : Early in the morning, jump on Prana’s tender before the heat of the day, and head off to Buaya Bay on the north side of Rinca Island. This is your first opportunity for an encounter with the legendary Komodo dragons. Likewise, you can spot wild boar, water buffalos, deer and monkeys while being safely accompanied by a park ranger who will give you some fun facts about the islands wildest residents.

PM : Back onboard Prana, guests can relax as we cruise towards the magnificent, Jurassic-looking Padar Island. Under the water is just as thrilling as the mountainous crevices of the island and we stop at Pillarsteen which is another famed Komodo dive site. This has four large pinnacles covered in soft corals which attract a bevvy of colorful marine life including giant pelagics. Also, watch out for the brightly colored red and purple fire urchins.

As the sun begins to disappear over the horizon, there is no better way to end a perfect day than with a bonfire, a BBQ and signature cocktails on a white sandy beach. After this, you might choose to have one of our beauty therapists rub away the aching muscles of your adventurous day before retiring to your luxurious suite. We overnight in the calm and secure Bay of Padar which is actually a great spot for some watersports.

Prana by Atzaró's 6-Day Komodo - Day 3 - Padar Island

AM : Pink Beach is an iconic spot in Komodo and one of the wonders of the world. Its unusual pink sand is formed by a kind of microscopic animal called Foraminifera which produces red or pink light on the coral reef. When this is broken down into sand by the constant push and pull of the waves the colour remains.

At Pink Beach on the island of Komodo, snorkel or dive through spectacular walls of fish looking out for blue-ribbon eels and crocodile fish. Here you can swim through caves, somersault through chimneys and marvel at the coral canyons.

PM : In the evening, our wonderful staff will set up a spectacular beach BBQ at sunset where you can lay back and watch the glittering heavens come alive. Once your dinner has digested, you might like to go night diving. This is truly world-class scuba experience, full of unusual and colourful marine life including, basket stars, bobtail squid and Spanish dancers and nudibranchs.

Prana by Atzaró's 6-Day Komodo - Day 4 - Pink Beach

Rinca Island

AM : Today is all about the east of Rinca Island. This is a very secluded spot and as yet very few other boats have discovered this gem, most go to the south. There is a peaceful serenity here accompanied by striking tropical scenery which cannot fail to impress and de-stress.

Rinca Island is very different from central Komodo and has sheer peaks climbing into the skies and a thickly forested interior inhabited by monkeys, deer, wild boar and fish eagles. Take kayaks to the island’s untouched beaches or explore the ecosystem of the shoreline including stunning rock formations.

PM : One of the best underwater spots nearby is Cannibal Rock, one of the world’s most celebrated macro sites with an endless supply of critters including as pygmy seahorses and colourful nudibranchs.

Then again, book an appointment with one of our spa therapists and enjoy a massage on deck. Afterwards, enjoy another sophisticated culinary experience in Prana’s dining room and adjourn to the cinema under the stars and watch the latest blockbuster.

Prana by Atzaró's 6-Day Komodo - Day 5 - Picnic Set Up on the Beach

Disembarkation

AM : We arrive back in Labuan Bajo harbour in the morning and enjoy a relaxed breakfast. The final farewells and departure for the airport.

Prana by Atzaró's 6-Day Komodo - Day 6 - Early morning Hike

8 Day - Spice Islands

itinerary map

AM : Fly to Ambon where our staff meets you at the airport with oshibori and refreshing mineral water. Our Cruise Director welcomes everyone aboard and gives a safety briefing while the chef prepares a delicious meal.

PM : We set sail on Prana, looking out for dolphins and whales as we go. As evening falls on your first day dine on deck and then retire to the cinema under the stars or have a massage in the spa.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 1 - Banda Sea

AM : Wake up on your first morning with Run Island framed by the majestic sunrise. Enjoy an early morning yoga session and then have a delicious breakfast in the salon.

Spend the day at Run Island and enjoy magnificent views and snorkeling or diving through spectacular coral walls with some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet.

PM : The remoteness of the islands and the low levels of human population have meant less fishing pressures and a vibrant, natural and healthy reef system. The Dutch were so keen to control the rare nutmeg plantations, they gave the British the island of Manhattan in exchange for Run Island in 1677. Run Island keeps this colonial feel and has a lovely traditional village inhabited by friendly locals which are well worth a visit.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 2 - Diving at Run Island

AM : The central islands form a picture-perfect crescent around the volcano, Gunung Api and were at the heart of the Dutch and British interest. These consist of Pulau Neira and Pulau Banda Besar or the great nutmeg island.

Today explore the island of Banda Besar with its impressive array of colonial architecture and rich historical background. Visit Fort Belgica, the historic church and the Governors House. After this, take trishaws to Fort Nassau and the local market where you can buy freshly dried Banda nutmegs, real cinnamon, handmade nutmeg, plucking baskets and local delicacies made from the spices grown on the island.

PM : Join Prana again and set sail to Cats Eye Beach which is very close by. Soak up the tropical vibes and enjoy a beach BBQ with cool cocktails around a roaring bonfire. Return to Prana for a late-night cocktail in the bar before heading to bed in your luxurious suite.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 3 - Fort Belgica

Pulau Hatta

AM : Today we rise early to sail to Pulau Hatta which is one of the best-kept diving secrets in this region. Long white sandy beaches and the fronds of tropical palms offer stunning photo opportunities while under the waves you will find schooling fish, big pelagics and great macro life.

PM : Snorkel, dive, fish, waterski, wakeboard or kayak and then set sail for Hatta Island to enjoy a relaxing afternoon walk on the lovely spice plantation and toast the end of another perfect day with sunset drinks and a mouth-watering feast. Afterwards maybe book an evening massage in your cabin and relax in perfect comfort.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 4 - Diving at Pulau Hatta

AM : Rise gently and take a leisurely breakfast on deck before hiking up Gunung Api for a one of the kind panoramic view of the whole of the Banda Islands. This active volcano is 666m high and sulphur clouds can be seen escaping from vents in the crust. Keep your eyes peeled as you climb the lush jungle slopes, you just might see a deer or a monkey.

PM : This afternoon is all about ‘black gold’ as we visit the Spongiby Nutmeg Plantation. Here you will learn a bit about this valuable commodity, how it is grown and its significance to the region. Return to Prana for dinner onboard followed by a trip to see the latest blockbuster at the cinema under the stars.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 5 - Gunung Api

Gunung Api Diving

AM : Rise early for yoga as the sun rises or have a long lie, the choice is yours. Spend the morning exploring the lava flows under Gunung Api which reveals an incredible underwater landscape covered with hard coral that has overgrown the lava from the volcano’s last eruption. Both divers and snorkels reap the rewards of this location.

PM : Indulge in water sports, have a treatment in the salon or lie on one of the many day beds and read a book. Today is all about relaxation on board South East Asia’s most luxurious Phinisi.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 6 - Diving at Gunung Api

AM : On day 7, Prana sails to Bird Island, a steep and dramatic rocky outcrop which is home to thousands of Frigate Birds and other feathered friends. This is actually the very tip of a volcano which is submerged to a depth of 3000 meters below the Banda Sea.

PM : Great diving and snorkeling are offered up in these nutrient-rich waters and hammerhead sharks can be famously be spotted here. Dine on board telling tales of all the close encounters you have had with big fish before setting off overnight return trip to Ambon.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 7 - Spices

AM : After a final breakfast onboard, bid farewell to the ship and her crew as the tenders deliver you back to port for a transfer to the airport.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Spice Islands - Day 8 - Dining Table Set Up

8 Day - Komodo National Park

itinerary map

AM : Our staff meets you at the airport in Labuan Bajo with oshibori towels and refreshing mineral water and then accompanies you to the harbor to board your vessel.

After an hour or so, we cruise to the northern tip of Komodo Island, the first day comes to a perfect close with a relaxing massage followed by cocktails on the roof top while the sun slowly fades away.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 1 - Sailing

Gili Lawa Darat, Batu Monco

AM : Wake up and enjoy an early morning yoga session on the top deck followed by a leisurely breakfast. Today we visit Gili Lawa Darat & Gili Lawa Laut where you can embark on a spectacular snorkeling adventure among pristine coral gardens or take one of our kayaks to explore the deserted white sandy beaches.

PM : Some of the best dive sites in Komodo National Park including Castle and Crystal Rock, Shotgun, The Passage and Lighthouse are in this area. This area offers some spectacular dives for all levels of certification with a good chance of observing manta rays even while snorkeling.

Shortly before sunset, we head ashore to Gili Lawa Darat for a short but unmissable sunset trek to one of the many Instagram hot-spots you will encounter. On return to the main vessel, we dine and sail to Batu Monco on the northernmost tip of Komodo Island.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 2 - Komodo Dragon

Batu Monco, Sangeang Volcano

AM : Wake to find yourself in a secluded bay surrounded by sheer cliffs and pristine reefs. Enjoy breakfast while keeping a lookout for wild boar foraging on the beach and sea eagles hunting for fresh fishes. This calm bay is perfect for stand-up paddle-boarding and its shallow reefs are the ideal environment for the curious amongst you to try your very first scuba dives.

The outer reef known locally as The Big Nose offers a nice drift dive with pristine corals and a good chance of dolphins and white tip reef sharks. The snorkeling in the bay is excellent and mantas are often spotted feeding in the shallows.

PM : After a casual lunch, why not enjoy a relaxing massage or an exhilarating water ski session. Shortly before dusk, we will lift anchor and sail to the sunset with our next destination in sight, the active volcano known as Sangeang Api.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 3 - Mawan

Sangeang Volcano

AM : This active volcano holds many secrets, from its underwater thermal vents, an astonishing variety of macro marine life with black sand to make those underwater photos pop, lush coral gardens and even a traditional Phinisi boat building village and if you are very lucky, you can witness a venting from the crater on high.

After a restful night's sleep moored outside Bontoh Village, you may choose to lie in or wake up to fresh local coffee and admire the majestic view of Sangeang Api. We sail at a leisurely pace to the north of the island during breakfast. Here you can choose to snorkel or dive around the shallow underwater thermal vents of the aptly named Bubble Reef. Home to many weird and wonderful small creatures that thrive in these waters. After another unique dive at Deep Purple, we have lunch while making our way back to Bontoh.

PM : In the afternoon, we can visit the tiny village that builds traditional Indonesian Phinisi sail boats. They have no running water, no electricity and live an extremely happy life unaffected by the modern pressures we know so well. The people are welcoming and get very excited when foreigners come to visit their village. Before sunset, we set sail back towards Komodo National Park, a perfect opportunity to enjoy a signature cocktail or two while watching the latest blockbuster on our outdoor cinema deck.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 4 - Sunbeds

Central Komodo & Padar Island

AM : Today is all about current as we head into the middle of the park. First stop is Takat Makassar, this is a world-famous reef that attracts large aggregations of manta rays if conditions are right. It is perfect for effortless snorkeling as the current nudges you along the reef. Divers can be sure of an exhilarating dive with white tip & black tip sharks, marble rays and green turtles. In-between dives, we can visit another iconic Instagram scene, surrounded by clear turquoise water, the sandbar in the middle of this reef is a must-see before another dive or snorkel at Mawan that also has a pristine sandy beach.

If the current is not your thing, you can book an exquisite massage on deck with one of our professional spa therapists.

PM : After lunch, we cruise south to Padar Island, here we can take another dive in the rich but cooler waters where the nutrient-rich Indian Ocean meets the Pacific and brings with it an abundance of plankton that in turn attracts very interesting marine life. One highlight is of course the legendary trek to watch the sunset from the top of the island. On your return, why not enjoy a cocktail on the soft sandy beach before dinner. We stay in the protected bay overnight and enjoy some stargazing from the rooftop cinema deck.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 5 - Dinner Set Up on The Beach

Komodo Island & Pink Beach

AM : Cameras at ready! It is the best to view the Komodo dragons in the morning before the heat of the day takes over. After breakfast, our crew will take you on land to meet the rangers who will ensure your safe traverse through the bush in search of these fascinating reptiles that time forgot. You can also expect to see monkeys, water buffalo and some unique flora and fauna. Once we return to the vessel and get refreshed, it's time for another of our chefs' delightful lunches.

PM : We now visit the world-famous Pink Beach, the sad is powdery soft and has a pink hue caused by a kind of microscopic animal called Foraminifera, which produces red or pink light on the coral reef. Over time, this is breaking down by wave action and the red color remains in the sand. This area also has some great snorkeling and diving and is generally sheltered and ideal for kayaks & paddle-boarding. Late afternoon, we head east to Wainilu Island, where the crew will set up for our spectacular dinner on the beach. For those that wish to night dive, this is one of the best locations in Komodo National Park with plenty of critters and the possibility of Frogfish, Seahorses and sometimes the elusive Rhinopias.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 6 - Pink Beach

Rinca Island & Kalong

AM : Komodo dragons are only present on five Indonesian islands, and in no other country in the world. Four of these islands make up what is known as Komodo National Park, and the fifth island is that of Flores. So we take another opportunity to visit another island home to these ancient reptiles. For the more adventurous, we set off to Loh Buaya on Rinca Island early in the morning to avoid the high temperatures, or if you prefer, take a well-deserved lie in or visit the white sandy beach nearby on Wainilu Island. After a heavy breakfast, we prepare for our final dive at Batu Tengah, from the surface, this featureless rock looks quite unassuming, however once submerged, you will find excellent coral cover and a large reef that is often visited by turtles, bump head parrot fish and the enigmatic eagle ray.

PM : While the dive guides and crew wash your dive equipment, we can pay a visit to Papagarang Besar, one of the few inhabited islands in the National Park. The village consists of about 1,200 friendly locals who are mostly fishermen and very environmentally aware. There is also a mangrove center on the island where they teach the younger generation the importance of maintaining the local mangrove habitat.

By early evening, we moor up at Kalong Island for a spectacle you will find hard to believe. At dusk, as the sun is setting, thousands of fruit bats vacate their daytime roosts in the mangrove forests and fly in search for food towards Rinca and Flores islands. A true National Geographic experience and one which you will never forget.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 7 - Padar Island

AM : Enjoy a relaxed breakfast while cruising towards Labuan Bajo where we say our final farewells and depart for the airport.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Komodo National Park - Day 8 - Relax at Sunset

8 Day - Raja Ampat

itinerary map

AM : You will be picked up in style by our staff offering oshibori and refreshing mineral water, from the airport in Sorong and taken directly to the harbour to board Prana. Today we set sail towards Mioskon, which teases guests with a flavour of all the delights that await in Raja Ampat including blue skies, pristine pellucid oceans and some of the best diving on earth.

PM : Relax with a massage on deck, cooled by the gentle sea breeze or recline on one of the many day beds with a good book. Lie back and embrace the freedom of the ocean. Enjoy being waited on by our discreet staff and sampling the delights of the fine dining menu.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 1 - Sailing in Raja Ampat

Cape Kri & Yenbuba

AM : Sailing through the night, you wake up in Cape Kri. After a delicious breakfast, the day will be ruled by ocean activities: snorkelling, diving, wakeboarding, water skiing and paddle boarding. Cape Kri is exceptional as it holds the World Record for the largest number of species referenced in one single dive. Tick off the ‘must see’ list of nudibranches, sea dragons, blue-striped flagtail pipefish, pygmy seahorses, green sea turtles, giant Napoleon wrasse, and Indian lionfish. Likewise, there are abundant untouched corals gardens and sea fans that serve as homes for large schools of colourful small fish.

PM : From here we move to Yenbuba which is located right next to Kri. Drop anchor and take to the shores to be met by friendly villagers and appreciate the unspoiled natural beauty of this extraordinary island and the ancient customs of its residents.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 2 - Guests enjoy cocktails on the beach

Manta Sandy & Arborek

AM : The day starts with a relaxed healthy breakfast followed by an underwater safari in search of the Giant Manta Ray. The Manta Sandy dive site is located close to Mansuar Island and is shallow, suitable for both diving and snorkelling.

PM : After a lovely lunch, Prana cruises to the small yet beautiful island of Arborek. Divers can simply plunge into the water from the pier to be instantly engulfed in a glittering array of spectacular coral fans and walls of fish, just below the surface.

The local people in Arborek are very welcoming and industrious, creating unusual handicrafts from sea pandan leaves. They live as they have done for thousands of years and are just one of many indigenous tribes within the region. Return to the boat to be engulfed in luxury, take a massage in the spa before sunset drinks and a delectable fine dining feast bringing this magical day to a perfect close.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 3 - Crew

AM : Wake to a sunrise yoga class and survey this ethereal landscape. After a hearty breakfast take one of the tenders to the island to climb the peaks of Wayag and survey the iconic limestone outcrops from above. This is the poster child of Raja Ampat filled surreal conical shaped karst islands scattered in an emerald sea.

PM : Enjoy a delicious fusion lunch and then choose between snorkelling, diving, kayaking or paddle boarding. This is a marine sanctuary so we cannot indulge in some of the water sports as we must respect the ocean here. Limestone cliffs, rugged outcrops, pinnacles, unspoilt rainforest and virgin white sandy coves await your pleasure. Spot dolphins and manta rays in the thriving ecosystems of this incredible destination.

To bring this outstanding day to a close we create a cocktail party on the beach around a roaring bonfire. Tell tales of the wildlife you’ve seen while watching billions of stars light up the night sky.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 4 - Enjoy the night on Deck

AM : We set sail early in the morning to Kawe so we can cross the equator underwater while you snorkel or dive surrounded by magnificent Giant Manta Rays. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

PM : After a lunch served either on the deck or in the air-conditioned salon, we sail to Aljui Bay. Here we visit the Atlas Pearl Farm, a far-flung yet gorgeous location where some of the world's best South Sea pearls are to be found. Tour the farm and learn more about these natural wonders. Loose pearls and jewels are available as prized mementoes.

For the intrepid on board, Aljui Bay is notably home to some of the most fabulous night-diving in Raja Ampat. Sink below the ocean and revel in the spectacular array of colours revealed by the dark. This really is like visiting another planet.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 5 - Dinner Set Up

AM : Enjoy a laid-back breakfast on the deck after a sunrise yoga class. Launch kayaks or take a tender to explore the beautiful bay. This spot is just outside of the National Park so all the watersports are once again at your disposal. The diving here is also unbelievable with endless coral gardens and a high species count.

PM : Return to the boat for an informal lunch served on deck by our lovely staff. Snorkelling, diving and watersports fill the rest of your afternoon, before cocktails and a BBQ on a deserted tropical beach. Take a massage in the salon before falling into bed after another amazing day.

Overnight we sail to the islands of Pef and Yengefo.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 3 - Rubber boat

Pef & Yengefo

AM : Wake up in the idyllic destination of Pulau Pef and take breakfast alfresco on the main deck after an early morning yoga class. Pulau Pef’s small inlets, bays and crystal-clear lagoons make it perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding. The water’s edge is surrounded by ancient mangrove trees, these are unusual as the water here is not murky at all revealing a vast underwater system of gnarled roots and aquatic life.

Marvel at pre-historic hand paintings on the limestone cliffs. Snorkel or dive caverns and overhangs, spot hard and soft corals, keep an eye out for pygmy seahorses and the rare endemic walking shark.

PM : After lunch, sail to Yangefo to dive or snorkel with turtles, stingrays and schools of snapper and fusilier fish. Enjoy dinner followed by a trip to the one and only cinema under the stars before retiring to your comfortable cabin. We set sail to Sorong overnight.

Prana by Atzaró's 8-Day Raja Ampat - Day 7 - Sundeck

AM : After a final breakfast on board, bid farewell to the ship and her crew as the tenders deliver you back to port for a transfer to the airport.

The sense of space is further enhanced by the fact that the main deck aft is entirely devoted to lounging and entertaining areas, without the customary interruption of helm-stations. The aft deck is split into two levels. Boarding via the custom double articulating boarding platform, or the telescopic passerelle, guests arrive on an expansive open deck area. This can be left clear for sun-bathing, or an evening cocktail promenade. Alternatively, a removable aft-facing settee provides a great spot for contemplating the view at anchor, or underway. Two short stairways, port and starboard, leading down into a cockpit well, which is protected overhead by the overhang of the flybridge. The sides can be open for the breeze to waft through, or at the push of a button, monolithic glass panels emerge from the side coamings to enclose this area.

A notable feature of the interior layout is that the principal entertainment areas are on the main deck level. On many yachts of this nature, the cockpit flows into a pilothouse area with casual dining, then drops down a level to the formal saloon and dining areas. PRANA avoids this duplication and, as a consequence, presents a more spacious open aspect with cockpit, bar, dining and lounges all on a single level.

Access to the accommodation area is by a stairway situated on the starboard side of the main saloon. It leads down to a T-shaped lobby with a day head on the port side, opposite the stairwell.

The aft end of the lobby gives access to the owners’ suite, which spans the full beam of the yacht, making for a very spacious arrangement. The king size bed is on the centreline with a leather top desk to starboard and a leather top chest of drawers on the port side. A TV is concealed behind artwork to the right of the entranceway. The ensuite bathroom is situated up a couple of steps and behind the aft bulkhead. This is a very generously proportioned room with a bath and shower in a glassed-off section on the starboard side and a separate toilet also behind etched glass on the port side. A heated towel rail doubles as the ladder to the escape hatch up to the aft deck. All the guest suites have portholes, electric blinds, individual climate control, mood lighting and music systems.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

Filipino activists decide not to sail closer to disputed shoal, avoiding clash with Chinese ships

More than 100 Filipino activists on wooden boats have decided not to sail closer to a fiercely disputed shoal in the South China Sea to avoid a confrontation with dozens of Chinese coast guard and suspected militia ships guarding the area

MANILA, Philippines — About 100 Filipino activists on wooden boats have decided not to sail closer to a fiercely disputed shoal in the South China Sea on Thursday to avoid a confrontation with dozens of Chinese coast guard and suspected militia ships guarding the area.

Accompanied by journalists on four boats, the activists will distribute food packs and fuel to Filipino fishermen about 58 nautical miles (107 kilometers) southeast of Scarborough Shoal and then sail back home, Emman Hizon and other organizers said.

Chinese and Philippine coast guard and accompanying ships have had a series of increasingly hostile territorial faceoffs at Scarborough, which is surrounded by the Chinese coast guard, and at Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal since last year. The Chinese ships have used powerful water cannons and employed blocking and other dangerous maneuvers that led to minor collisions, injured several Filipino navy personnel and strained diplomatic ties.

The United States has repeatedly warned that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines , its longtime treaty ally, if Filipino forces, ships or aircraft come under an armed attack in the region, including in the busy South China Sea. That has sparked fears a conflict could involve Washington if the territorial disputes escalate out of control.

The activists and fishing community leaders, who belong to a nongovernment coalition called Atin Ito, Tagalog for This is Ours, provided aid to Filipino fishermen and floated symbolic territorial buoys on Wednesday on their way to Scarborough’s outlying waters to assert Philippine sovereign rights over the atoll. But two Chinese coast guard ships started shadowing them Wednesday night, according to Hizon and the Philippine coast guard.

A group of 10 activists managed to evade the Chinese blockade by at least 46 ships in the outlying waters on Wednesday and distributed food and fuel to Filipinos fishing closer to the atoll. That was cited by the activists in declaring that their mission was a success.

“We managed to breach their illegal blockade, reaching the vicinity of Bajo de Masinloc to support our fishers with essential supplies,” said Rafaela David, an activist leader who led the voyage to the disputed waters. “Mission accomplished.”

The Philippine coast guard deployed three patrol ships and a light plane on Wednesday to keep watch on the activists, who set off from western Zambales province. Dozens of journalists joined the three-day voyage.

In December, the group mounted an expedition to another disputed shoal but cut the trip short after being tailed by a Chinese ship.

China effectively seized Scarborough Shoal, a triangle-shaped atoll with a vast fishing lagoon ringed by mostly submerged coral outcrops, by surrounding it with its coast guard ships after a tense 2012 standoff with Philippine government ships.

Angered by China’s action, the Philippine government brought the territorial disputes to international arbitration in 2013 and largely won, with a tribunal in The Hague ruling three years later that China’s expansive claims based on historical grounds in the busy seaway were invalid under the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The ruling declared Scarborough Shoal a traditional fishing area for Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese fishermen, but China refused to join the arbitration, rejected the ruling and continues to defy it.

Two weeks ago, Chinese coast guard and suspected militia ships used water cannons on Philippine coast guard and fisheries ships patrolling Scarborough Shoal, damaging both ships.

The Philippines condemned the Chinese coast guard’s action at the shoal, which lies in Manila’s internationally recognized exclusive economic zone. The Chinese coast guard said it took a “necessary measure” after the Philippine ships “violated China’s sovereignty.”

Aside from the Philippines and China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have also been involved in the long-seething territorial disputes .

Indonesia has also had skirmishes with Chinese vessels in resource-rich waters stretching from its Natuna islands to the margins of the South China Sea, which Beijing has claimed virtually in its entirety.

The Indonesian navy has fired warning shots in the past and seized Chinese fishing boats it accused of encroaching into Indonesian waters.

Killer whales attack and sink sailing yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar — again

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 4:54 PM EDT / CBS News

A sailing yacht sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday after an unknown number of orcas  slammed into the vessel with two people on board and caused a water leak, officials said. Both crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker, said Spain's maritime rescue service, marking the latest killer whale attack on a boat in what has become a pattern in recent years.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. local time in the narrow strait between Spain and Morocco that has become a notorious site of human interactions with pods of killer whales that, for reasons still not fully understood, ram into boats and at times even sink them . In this case, crew members on board the SV Alboran Cognac yacht put out an emergency call for an evacuation after they encountered orcas roughly 14 miles off the coast of Cape Spartel.

The crew members reported feeling blows to the hull of the vessel and rudder, which was damaged by the whales, the rescue service said. The agency's coordination center in Tarifa, on the Spanish side of the Strait of Gibraltar, helped arrange for their evacuation via the tanker MT Lascaux. The tanker was able to collect the crew members from the sinking yacht within the hour, and they disembarked in Gibraltar before 10:30 a.m. They abandoned the SV Alboran Cognac, which proceeded to completely disappear into the ocean.

Anyone sailing through waters from the Gulf of Cádiz in southern Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar, either in a larger motorized vessel or a personal sailing boat, is advised to avoid certain areas that the maritime rescue service marks as potentially dangerous spots for orca interactions. The greatest threats exist between May and August, when officials say that pods of killer whales are most commonly seen in those parts of the Atlantic.

orca-interactions-maritime-rescue.jpg

But previously recorded incidents suggest those dangers may be present at any time. Last October, a Polish boat touring company reported that a pod of orcas had managed to sink one of its yachts after repeatedly slamming into the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing it to leak. Last June, two sailing teams competing in an international race around the world reported frightening scenarios in which multiple orcas rammed into or pushed up against their boats or as they sailed west of Gibraltar.

No one on board any of the vessels was hurt in those encounters, but the documented rise in confrontational behavior has researchers and sailors trying to determine why orcase have attempted to sink or capsize so many boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.

Some sailors have even resorted to blasting thrash metal music in a bid to deter the apex predators.

Reports of orcas interacting with humans have more than tripled in the last two years or so, according to the research group GTOA, which has documented hundreds of such incidents in the region since 2020. But some of the latest data points to possible changes in the orcas' etiquette, with the group reporting only 26 interactions in the Strait of Gibraltar and Bay of Biscay areas between January and May of this year. That number is 65% lower than the number of interactions recorded in the region over the same months last year, and 40% lower than the average number of interactions recorded in the same months between 2021 and 2023, according to GTOA.

Orcas Sink 49-Foot Yacht in Mystifying Trend Around the Strait of Gibraltar

A pack of orcas dubbed "gladis" sank another yacht, the latest in a four-year-long string of attacks that's befuddled experts..

Image for article titled Orcas Sink 49-Foot Yacht in Mystifying Trend Around the Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas sunk a sailing yacht in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday, according to Spain’s maritime rescue service. While orcas are typically peaceful, this is the latest in a string of attacks that have hit the region in the past four years.

Related Content

Reuters reports that a 49-foot-long vessel, named the Alboran Cognac, carried two people and encountered the high social apex predators at 9 am local time on Sunday. The passengers reported sudden blows to the hull and rudder before the water started seeping into the ship. A nearby oil tanker rescued the two onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left to sink into the ocean.

Experts believe the orcas involved to be a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the name “Gladis.” This group of juvenile males has sunk several yachts in the Strait of Gibraltar over the last four years, but experts are somewhat baffled as to why. While typically peaceful animals, the Gladis pod has plagued the small strip of water separating Europe and Africa for years.

There have been nearly 700 interactions between orcas and ships in the Strait of Gibraltar region since May 2020, according to Reuters. At the time, it seemed like one of many dystopian things going on in the world during the global pandemic. But the trend continues today, and we still don’t have much more of an explanation as to why this happens.

In 2020, photos of the Gladis pod revealed several injuries on the orcas’ bodies, possibly indicating previous run-ins with fishing boats. In a 2023 interview with NPR, director of the Orca Behavior Institute Monika Wieland Shields said we don’t know the motivation, but this could be a defense behavior based on previous trauma. It’s possible the orcas had negative experiences with a fishing boat, so now they see all large boats as a threat.

“I definitely think orcas are capable of complex emotions like revenge,” she told NPR. “I don’t think we can completely rule it out.”

However, Shields doesn’t completely subscribe to the “revenge” hypothesis. There have been plenty of other times when orcas around the world were targeted by boats, and they’ve never responded in this way before. Further, it doesn’t seem that this behavior is spreading to other orca pods.

Another theory is that ramming boats is just the latest orca fad, according to Renaud de Stephanis, president and coordinator at CIRCE Conservación Information and Research, a cetacean research group based in Spain. He told NPR in 2022 that “this is a game” for the orcas, and when they “ have their own adult life, it will probably stop. ” As orcas grow older, they have to help the pod hunt for food and have less time to play with sailboats.

Director of Bay Cetology, Jared Towers, told NPR that fads like this come and go in the orca society. Towers said some orcas in the Pacific in the 1990s would kill fish and swim around with it on their head. Now we don’t see that anymore. Hopefully, the boat ramming phenomenon will come and go like any other trend.

China Deploys Dozens of Ships to Block Philippine Protest Flotilla

Filipino civilians set sail in fishing boats to oppose China’s control of a shoal claimed by the Philippines. A formidable Chinese fleet awaited them.

Several small boats moving through the water, with grass and hills in the background.

By Chris Buckley and Camille Elemia

China has sent dozens of coast guard and maritime militia vessels toward a disputed atoll in the South China Sea, a large show of force aimed at blocking a civilian protest flotilla from the Philippines, as tensions between the countries have flared.

The Filipino group organizing the flotilla of about 100 small fishing boats, led by five slightly bigger ones, said it wanted to assert the Philippines’ claims to Scarborough Shoal , an atoll controlled by Beijing that is closer to Manila.

But even before the motley Philippine fleet set out on Wednesday morning, China deployed a formidable contingent of much bigger government-run ships to the area, an intimidating escalation of its frequent assertions of control over vast expanses of sea far from its mainland.

“What we’re seeing this time, I would say, is definitely of another order,” said Ray Powell, the director of SeaLight , a group that monitors the South China Sea. “I think that the China Coast Guard is concerned that they’re going to try to sort of get too close, and so they’re sending an overwhelming force.”

Standoffs and close brushes between Filipino coast guard or civilian vessels and China’s larger coast guard and militia ships — which have used powerful water cannons to drive Philippine vessels away — have become more frequent in the past two years. This time, the size of the Chinese presence and the large number of civilian Filipino boats could make any encounter near the shoal more risky, Mr. Powell said.

“If China decides that they want to send the message that says, ‘We’ve had enough of this,’ then the scary thing you would not want to see is one of these small Filipino fishing boats hit by a water cannon, because that would not end well,” he said.

Rafaela David, one of the leaders of Atin Ito , the Filipino organization coordinating the protest at sea, said the group would not be deterred from trying to reach the atoll, which the Philippines calls Panatag Shoal. The fishing boats were expected to take about 20 hours to get there.

“We should normalize and regularize civilian access,” Ms. David said at a news briefing on Tuesday in Botolan, a town on the Philippines’ main island of Luzon. She said the number of protest boats would show that Filipinos are “not intimidated by someone as big as China.”

The group’s chances of breaking China’s hold on Scarborough Shoal , about 138 miles west of Luzon, seem slim.

By Tuesday, China had positioned five coast guard ships and six maritime militia vessels near the shoal and had another 25 or so maritime militia vessels sitting roughly 60 miles further out, said Mr. Powell, whose group is part of the Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation at Stanford University. That estimate, he added, did not include Chinese vessels that either do not carry automatic identification signal devices, which allow them to be tracked, or have turned off their devices in order to “go dark.”

Officials with the Philippine Navy and coast guard said they were deploying ships to escort the civilian Philippine flotilla.

On Wednesday, the Chinese government warned the Filipino protesters against nearing the shoal, which Beijing calls Huangyan Island.

“If the Philippine side abuses China’s good will and violates China’s territorial sovereignty and jurisdiction, China will defends its rights and take countermeasures in accordance with the law,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a news conference in Beijing. “The responsibility and consequences will entirely rest with the Philippine side.”

Relations between Manila and Beijing have worsened in the past two years over their maritime disputes.

Since Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected president of the Philippines in 2022, he has revived ties with the United States and pushed back against China’s claims to shoals and outcrops near the Philippines. Beijing, in turn, has stepped up coast guard and maritime militia operations to guard its claims.

On Monday, China’s coast guard said that it had started sea rescue training near Scarborough Shoal “to ensure the safety of people onboard vessels that are coming and going.”

Manila has also accused Beijing of taking steps to turn another disputed atoll, Sabina Shoal, which sits about 83 miles northwest of the Philippine island of Palawan, into an artificial island, and it sent a coast guard and a navy ship to the area. On Monday, Beijing rejected the accusation.

The Scarborough Shoal has been under Chinese control since 2012, when Beijing wrested it from Manila in a weekslong standoff. Filipino fishermen had long worked in the resource-rich shoal, but since then their access has been restricted and sporadic.

In 2016, an international tribunal established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea rejected China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea and ruled that the shoal is a traditional fishing ground for the Philippines, China and Vietnam. China has ignored that ruling and continued to entrench its control across much of the sea, including Scarborough Shoal.

Atin Ito, the group organizing the Philippine flotilla, is a coalition of religious activists, civic groups and organizations representing fishermen. The name means “This Is Ours,” and the group has sought to galvanize the public behind peacefully asserting the Philippines’ claims in what Manila calls the West Philippine Sea.

Atin Ito held a similar protest last year , sending boats to the Second Thomas Shoal — a disputed atoll, also known as Ayungin Shoal, that is held by Filipino navy personnel on a grounded ship. But those boats turned back after constant shadowing by Chinese vessels, which have used water cannons against Philippine ships that have tried to deliver supplies to the grounded ship.

This time, the Atin Ito mission appears larger and may be bolder. The group said it planned to drop off food and fuel for any Filipino fishing boats in the area. Along the way, the flotilla also began dropping buoys bearing the message “WPS, Atin Ito” — that is, the West Philippine Sea is ours.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — About 100 Filipino activists on wooden boats have decided not to sail closer to a fiercely disputed shoal in the South China Sea on Thursday to avoid a confrontation with dozens of Chinese coast guard and suspected militia ships guarding the area.

The near-collision was among the tense confrontations encountered by two Philippine government vessels against China, which undertook a weeklong voyage in one of the world's most hotly contested sea passages to assert Philippine sovereignty.
