Paceship Bluejacket 23

  • Add to quote

Not a common boat, but I thought I'd check - any other Paceship Bluejacket 23 owners out there? Ours is #98. Would love to connect and see what improvements you may have made.

Not an owner, but am interested in the Bluejacket. There is one for sale near to me and it does check a number of the right boxes. Not sure how it (and me) would hold up it some rough weather that might blow up on the Bay of Fundy. jb

We've only had ours for a year, we're in Halifax, but we had it out in 20ish kts one day with lots of chop - the boat did fine. I'm not a terribly experienced sailor but I didn't have much trouble. I don't think I would find it much fun in wind over that given the size of the boat, but it's a little more enclosed than say, a Bluenose, so that's nice.

I had a Grampian Classic 22. They were built with the same molds as the Bluejacket. I actually worked in the Grampian booth at the 1965 boat show on the Classic 22. I ended up buying one in 1983 here on the Chesapeake. I loved that boat. She sailed extremely well and was a lot of fun to sail. In the mid- 1960's the Olympics was looking for a three person keel boat. A lot of designs were developed and the Soling eventually was selected. The Classic 22 was submitted as C&C's entry for that 3 person keel boat. That version had no interior and a tapered spar and a bit more sail area. These were advanced designs for their day in terms of their longish water lines, fractional rigs, a fair amount of form stability and efficient keels and rudders. They were a popular one design class in some areas of the US and Canada. The Classic 22 was built several years before the Bluejacket 23 went into production and was built for several years after that. (The last Classic 22 was built around 1970) The Classic 22 did not have the self-bailing cockpit, the reverse transom, or the outboard motor well that the Blue Jacket added. You see them listed under a bunch of different names, Gazelle 22, Classic 22, Viking 22, C&C 22. The name changes reflected who built them and when. There were a lot detail variations as well. (Some, like mine had a small cabin with a vee-berth, head and a small galley.) The Classic 22's and the Bluejacket versions still can be found in good condition pretty cheaply. They make great daysailors and decent overnighters, especially if you have a boom tent that can serve as a harbor awning. Jeff

we have just acquired a bluejacket 23 that needs some work. Would love to talk to you about them. I hope this goes through 😊

Hey - just saw this - would love to connect!

BTW, I moved the batteries athwart ships on either side of the keel. Also I removed 20 pounds of rudder weight so she does not hobby horse as they were prone to do.

Bluejacket MS 23

Sailboat class / from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, dear wikiwand ai, let's keep it short by simply answering these key questions:.

Can you list the top facts and stats about Bluejacket MS 23?

Summarize this article for a 10 year old

The Bluejacket MS 23 , also called the Bluejacket Motorsailer 23 and the Bluejacket 23 MS , is a Canadian trailerable sailboat that was designed by William Garden as a motorsailer and first built in 1984. [1] [2] [3]

The design is a development of the earlier Garden-designed Family Cat 23 . [1]

Review of Bluejacket 23

Basic specs..

The Bluejacket 23 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.14 - 1.24 meter (3.74 - 4.04 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Bluejacket 23 is 2.22, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Bluejacket 23 is about 76 kg/cm, alternatively 425 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 76 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 425 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 13m 2 (139 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

There's a lot packed into that 23' boat!

You'er right, they were very well equipped for a small boat and very shallow draft which would be ideal for me. I could tie it up at our dock right here at the house. We have access to the Saint Laurence river.

A couple of years ago, in thinking about a new boat, I came across your references to the Bluejacket 23 and became intrigued. Search as I may I could never dig up more than the pictures attached to your thread. In the evolving mysteries of the universe I discovered yesterday that I have been sailing by one for the past 8 years. It has been stored in a boatyard on a trailer under shrinkwrap. The cover has finally torn and I spotted it. It is in desperate condition, awaiting the return of an absentee owner, and is to become a retirement project. Further, the yard operator says it is a (the?) prototype. It is very roughly finished and has had some questionable modifications. It has had a short skeg/keel (1' by 3') added to the bow, apparently to aid in sailing, and an extension has been welded to the rudder. It would appear to me to be real greenhouse for heat. It has a glass panel in the roof, which may open, none of the huge windows in the main salon open. I will watch for the return of the errant owner and hope to get an inside look and some background on this interesting concept.

Paceship Yachts Ltd.

Paceship began as Industrial Shipping Company Limited of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, a builder of small plywood speedboats. When the plant was rebuilt after a fire in 1956, it became one of the earliest manufacturer of small fiberglass runabouts and sailboats. The line soon expanded to include larger sailboats which they began marketing under the Paceship name around 1962. The company was acquired in 1965 by Atlantic Bridge Company Limited of Nova Scotia (ABCO) and the boat building operation was closed shortly afterward. In 1975 the PY-23 and PY-26 tooling was sold to AMF of Connecticut, who built the design until 1981 when it closed down the Paceship division. Tanzer Industries bought the mold and rights to the PY26 design in 1981 and produced the boat as the Tanzer 27. Much of the information on boats built by this builder was obtained from the PACESHIP OWNERS SITE (www.paceship.org), which is one of the best sites of it’s kind on the web. Sailing vessels, also known as sailboats, are a type of watercraft that uses the power of the wind to propel itself through the water. This method of transportation is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of travel, dating back thousands of years. Sailing vessels have played a crucial role in exploration, trade, and warfare throughout history, and continue to be popular for recreational purposes today.

There are several different types of sailboats, each with its own unique design and purpose. The most common type is the sloop, which has a single mast and a mainsail, along with a smaller jib sail at the front. Sloops are versatile and easy to handle, making them a popular choice for both recreational and racing purposes. Another popular type of sailboats are the ketch, which has two masts and a larger sail area, making it suitable for longer voyages and carrying heavier loads. Ketches are often used for fishing and coastal trading.

Bluejacket offers many kit choices. We have plank on bulkhead models, carved solid hull models, some have laser cut parts, some have etched brass, etc. Some of our kits are only appropriate for the most expert of builders, while others would be a great introduction to modeling for a first-timer.

Legend: s: solid carved laminated basswood hull, e: etched brass, pb: plank on bulkhead, r: suitable for radio control, pf: plank on frame, d: display stand, L: laser cut parts, c: cast resin, fg: fiberglass.

Another popular type is the ketch, which has two masts and a larger sail area, making it suitable for longer voyages and carrying heavier loads. Ketches are often used for fishing and coastal trading.

One of the most iconic types of sailing vessels is the schooner, which has multiple masts and a variety of sail configurations. Schooners were widely used in the 19th century for both cargo and passenger transport, and were known for their speed and maneuverability. They are still seen in modern times as charter vessels and in some cases, as private yachts.

The history of sailing vessels can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where they were primarily used for fishing and transportation. The Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans were among the first to use sailboats for trade and exploration, with the Roman triremes being some of the most advanced sailing vessels of their time. In the Middle Ages, the Vikings used their longships for both trade and warfare, while the Chinese developed advanced sailing technologies such as the sternpost rudder and watertight compartments.

During the Age of Exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries, sailing vessels played a crucial role in the discovery and colonization of new lands. The Portuguese and Spanish were pioneers in using sailboats for long-distance voyages, while the Dutch and British dominated the seas with their powerful fleets of sailing ships. The advent of steam-powered ships in the 19th century led to a decline in the use of sailing vessels for commercial purposes, but they continued to be used for leisure and racing.

Today, sailing vessels are primarily used for recreation and sport. The popularity of sailing as a leisure activity has led to the development of modern, high-tech sailboats that can reach incredible speeds and compete in events such as the America’s Cup. Sailing schools and clubs around the world offer opportunities for people to learn how to sail and experience the thrill of being out on the water powered only by the wind.

In conclusion, sailing vessels have a rich and diverse history, serving as a vital mode of transportation and a source of fascination and wonder for centuries. From the simple fishing boats of ancient civilizations to the sleek, high-performance sailboats of today, they continue to capture the imagination and provide endless opportunities for adventure and exploration on the open seas.

Bluejacket Boats

Welcome to Bluejacket Boats!

bluejacket 23 sailboat

If you are looking for a cruising powerboat that you can trailer behind your family vehicle and still cruise in comfort in far away places, you have entered the correct harbor.

Bluejacket boats plane at low speed and never stick their nose in the air or create huge wakes. They need smaller engines than other similar sized boats and offer commensurate high fuel mileage for cruising economy.  Since LIZ was launched in 2000, the issue of fuel use has become of much greater importance.  Fortunately, the Bluejackets were designed with fuel economy as a major goal and high fuel prices are of much less concern to builders of Bluejackets.  Cruising comfort is not compromised as there are large berths in the  forward cabin and standing headroom in the pilothouse with excellent visibility at all times. A great feature is the private head with standing headroom in all Bluejackets which is very rare in boats this size. The Bluejacket has comfortable seating for captain and crew, lots of galley counter space and storage, plus plenty of fuel and water capacity.

In the powerboat world there are displacement boats, semi displacement or semi planing boats and full planing boats.  Displacement boats are restricted to speeds below the “hull speed” of the boat determined primarily by the waterline length. For most smaller boats this will be about 6 to 7 mph.  Planing boats can run at very high speed but tend to behave very poorly between their hull speed and up to about 16 to 20 knots.  In this range they will assume a bow high – stern down attitude, make large wakes, steer poorly, absorb gobs of fuel and be generally unpleasant to be aboard.  Unfortunately, this mid speed range is just where most cruisers would like to run if they had a choice.

This common characteristic is never relayed to a novice boat buyer by dealers or the sales brochures.  These usually show the boat happily zipping across the water at high speed or sitting at the dock with the crew lounging about with a beverage in hand.  Such poor behavior may appear for the first time when the proud owner takes the new boat out for a spin.  Often there is great disappointment and the boat may spend far more time at the dock than the new owner intended.  Perhaps one family member, usually the wife, does not like running at full bore all the time and the husband can’t stand idling along at 6 mph.  Of such circumstances are boat widows born.

Semi planing boats will run in the intermediate speed range but do require higher power and fuel relative to displacement boats.  They will generally be heavier than planing boats and still make large wakes when pushed into their upper speed range.

A boat that will plane at several times its hull speed and and also be comfortable and economical in the transition range while providing a high level of cruising comfort to its crew would be very desirable.  That was the primary goal assumed by the designer of the Bluejacket 24.

This goal and its achievement along with many other equally desirable objectives are described in a magazine article available by clicking “Designing Liz” .  A mostly non-theoretical look at the basic forces that allow a boat to plane on top of the water rather than plowing along through it can be seen by clicking here .

To read an account of performance and handling of the Bluejacket 24 in various water conditions, click here. As these accounts relate, the Bluejacket offers a carefully tailored combination of classic appearance, comfortable accommodation, performance, economy of operation and rough water capability that is difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere.

The ability to be trailed behind a family vehicle is paramount to achieving all the goals set for the Bluejacket.  This not only makes it possible to cruise in desirable waters far from your  home port but also drastically reduces the cost of owning and maintaining a cruising boat.  Cost of marina slip storage is very high and will only increase as available space is filled.  The ability to store the boat at home or in public dry storage allows a huge reduction in cost of boat ownership.  Even the cost of an enclosed boathouse can easily be offset by lack of marina slip and maintenance charges.

The classic lines and general appearance of the Bluejackets is apparent to a casual observer but the design elements behind these desirable characteristics is not so readily obvious. The hull is constructed in the stitch and glue method with quality marine plywood, fiberglass and epoxy, following modern aircraft monocoque principles, resulting in a strong, rigid and light weight structure. All interior parts of the boat are designed to provide both structural strength and integrity as well as whatever other functions they may be required to perform. One result of having all parts fulfill multiple functions is that there are no frames or timber members required in the boat. With the cabin, cockpit sole and berth bases bonded to the hull bottom with longitudinal and transverse bulkheads, the hull becomes a very rigid torsion box structure that can withstand all the stresses that such a boat may be subjected to.

The following sequence of photos shows the Bluejacket 24 running from slow speed to wide open throttle.

bluejacket 23 sailboat

One main thing to notice on this series of photos is that the stern of the Bluejacket never sinks or squats as normally seen on powerboats running through their transition speed range from displacement to full planing.

The evidence of this is that the white boot top at the stern remains visible and above the water surface at all times.  The bow rises to a maximum trim angle of a little over 3 degrees, providing excellent visibility from the helm at all speeds.  The low bow rise also allows a more comfortable ride by causing  the sharper part of the bow to meet wave chop.  Wide reverse angle chines near the stern distribute dynamic lift over the bottom  giving the boat greater longitudinal stability so that trim changes little when crew moves about fore and aft.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (CBS12) — Three people were rescued after their boat began taking on water 23 miles from the shores of St. Augustine.

The U.S. Coast Guard said on Friday, once the people on the 23-foot boat realized the situation they were in, someone onboard used the boat's marine radio to get ahold of a USCG command center, stating they were taking on water and needed assistance.

Communication was briefly lost between the Coast Guard and the group in distress. However, the U.S. Navy's patrol squad reacquired radio communication and relayed the details to the USCG. They were then able to broadcast those details to first responders.

The Coast Guard said the three were found and were brought safely to Vilano Boat Ramp without medical concern. As for the boat, the St. Johns Fire Rescue Crew used dewatering pumps to keep the vessel afloat as they towed it back to the boat ramp.

"This case highlights the vital role that our area partners play in search and rescue," said Lt. Cmdr. Barton Nanney, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville search and rescue mission coordinator. "The vessel utilized a marine radio to contact our command center, and we recommend that all mariners have it onboard, along with all required safety gear to be safe on the water."

At least 23 migrants on boat bound for Italy are missing, Tunisian officials say

Tunisia calls on its navy to help find the missing people as the country grapples with an influx of migrants from other African countries and the Middle East, who use it as a departure point for Europe.

At least 23 migrants are missing after a boat set off from Tunisia in the direction of Italy, the North African country's national guard has said.

It deployed floating units and informed the navy to help in the search for the missing people.

Tunisia has been grappling with an influx of people from other countries in Africa and the Middle East attempting to get to Europe on small boats.

It has replaced Libya as a main departure point for people trying to reach the West.

Tunisia has been cracking down on migrants as part of a deal worth more than €1bn (£855,870) with the EU, as the 27-member bloc tries to tackle the migrant crisis.

The issue has been politically divisive among the bloc's member states ever since more than a million people arrived on European shores back in 2015.

The EU's deal with Tunisia includes assistance to better police the border and prevent migrants without papers from reaching Europe.

The number of migrants reaching Italy in 2024 fell by two-thirds, compared with the same time last year, according to figures from Italy's interior ministry on 8 May.

But critics have said the measures have been detrimental to the tens of thousands of migrants trapped in the country and tensions rising in Tunisia over migrant arrivals.

At the start of this month, several activists in the country were apprehended, accused of financial crimes stemming from providing aid to migrants.

More than 80 migrants were also arrested in Tunis after clashes with law enforcement during the clearance of encampments in the capital that authorities said were "disturbing the peace", according to Radio Mosaïque.

Hundreds of migrants had camped near the headquarters of UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration, many of them demanding agencies resettle them outside of Tunisia.

Law enforcement used heavy machinery to raze their tents and then bused them outside of the city to "an unknown destination", according to Ben Amor, from the non-governmental organisation FTDES.

On Thursday, a majority of EU members called for more agreements with countries where migrants depart from or travel through to get to Europe, saying the bloc needs to think outside the box.

It came a day after the European Union endorsed sweeping reforms to the bloc's asylum system as campaigning for Europe-wide elections next month gathers pace, with migration expected to be a key issue.

The New Pact on Migration and Asylum lays out rules for EU members to handle people trying to enter without authorisation, from how to screen them to establish whether they qualify for protection to deporting them if they are not allowed to stay.

However, the vast reform package will only enter force in 2026, bringing no immediate fix to an issue that has fuelled one of the EU's biggest political crises, dividing nations over who should take responsibility for migrants when they arrive and whether other countries should be obligated to help.
