All sailboats are diverse and unique, and for that very reason it is imperative that your boat trailer fits your vessel’s hull and keel exactly. Whether your keel is a swing, bulb, full, fixed, fin, shoal, wing or retractable, your custom sailboat trailer will be designed to effectively support and protect the keel. Also, properly placed screwpads or treated lumber bunks will support your sailboat’s hull and bulkheads. This ensures the safe and sturdy transport of your precious rig! Our trailers are also designed to make loading and launching as easy and pain-free as possible. Some options we use to make this possible include keel rests, keel guides, tongue extensions, side guides, and more!
Floating On and Off, or Hoisting On and Off the Trailer
Many customers want a sailboat trailer that allows their sailboat to seamless float on and off the trailer once it has been backed into the water. We work with you during the design process to make sure we build the trailer suitably for your needs, taking into account the ramps you typically use, water depth, tides, etc. Oftentimes we will design or create new options to remove the stress that is often felt when you find yourself facing the launching ramp. We also have plenty of options to suit your personal sailing lifestyle!
You may also choose to have your sailboat hoisted on and off the trailer. If this is the case, you will want to choose the screwpad style support system, as it also allows for further adjustability when working on the sailboat’s hull.
Loadmaster sailboat trailers have a number of standard features that come with all of our custom trailers. To make your sailboat trailer truly unique, we also offer a range of options to choose from.
- Custom painting for freshwater use
- Galvanize your custom trailer for salt water use
- Mast Carriers and/or ladders
- Pull pin style tongue extension or large separate extensions
- Front Idler axles
- Bunks with or without Sling Pockets
- Structural Screwpads set for the bulkheads on your boat
The Saltwater Experience
If you plan to use your custom sailboat trailer in salt water, we can provide you with the entire Salt Water Series which can be adapted to suit your launching style. Our mig-welded C-Channel steel trailer frames and parts are manufactured and welded, then sent to get hot-dip galvanized after construction. This ensures that the entire trailer is as corrosion-resistant as possible while providing you with strength that will never be offered by an aluminum trailer.
- Galvanizing (All galvanization services come with a 5-year warranty)
- Stainless steel hardware
- Freshwater brake flush kit or numerous Disc brake options
- All LED lights and More!

Outboards picked up in-store may be stand-alone and no longer in the box or crate.
Pre-Delivery Inspection
Pre-delivery Inspection is required to validate the warranty and includes the necessary services & products used on each new vessel to ensure quality performance prior to delivery.

STANDARD FEATURES
Galvanized Steel Frame
Tubular structural steel, fully hot dip galvanized, provides the ultimate finish for any boat trailer. Tubular design shrouds wiring and brake lines from damage. All machining and welding is performed before galvanizing, so there are no surfaces left unprotected from a boat trailer’s ultimate enemy: corrosion.
Patented Aluminum I-Beam Frame
Patented designs offer many features that add functionality to a great look. Integrated wire gutter beneath the top flange securely protects wiring and brakelines. Models to 7,300 lbs. capacity feature a captured fastener channel along the bottom flange offering invisible mounting points for other features. Web mounted crossbars strengthen the overall frame assembly.
Galvanized Crossbars and Tongue
Torsion Axles
Torsion axles provide independent suspension, exceptional rigidity, corrosion resistance, and a far superior ride to any leaf spring suspension. Available on most models.
Greaseable Hubs
Trailer with peace of mind knowing that you’ve inspected the condition and topped off the lubricant level in each hub of your trailer.
Disc Brakes (Where Installed)
This trailer is equipped with disc brakes (where installed). Load Rite recommends disc brakes on all wheels where available. Disc brakes are self-adjusting and self-cleaning and require minimal maintenance in order to continue to deliver top performance. Follow maintenance tips in your Owners Manual for more detailed instructions.
DOT Rated Tires and Lighting
All Load Rite original equipment tires and lighting components are fully DOT approved.
Balanced Wheels 13″ and Larger
CounterAct Wheel Bead Balancing is now included on all 13″ and larger wheel assemblies as a standard feature. The wheels dynamically balance during each use. Visit counteractbalancing.com for more information.
Aluminum Diamond Plate Fenders
A stylish design combined with extreme durability. Standard on all single axle models with 13″ and larger wheels.
Heat-Shrunk Sealed, Concealed Wiring
Standard equipment on all trailers 17′ and longer except welded frame models.
Adjustable Carpeted Bunks
Traditionally known as V-bunks, this system offers both high strength and a wide range of adjustability. Out of adjustment? There are shorter and taller bolster brackets available in many heights.
A winch is standard equipment on all boat and PWC models. Capacity and features vary by application.
Tongue Jack
Tongue jacks are standard equipment on all Load Rite Elite models 90″ wide and wider except two-place PWC models, all 5 STARR models, and all UT, EQ, and CH models. Appearance and specifications vary by application. Tongue jacks are optional on all other models.
NATM Certified
Each year Load Rite trailers undergo a detailed inspection process in order to earn the right to proudly display this certification on products we manufacture.
NMMA / NATM Certified
2 Plus 3 Years Coupler to Taillight Warranty
Load Rite’s premiere warranty exclusive to our Elite line of trailers.
102″ Overall Width (96″ and Wider Models)
Add extra width to standard 96″ wide trailers.
Swing Tongue
Applications are limited by trailer capacity and tongue length. Not available on models exceeding 6,000 lbs. capacity. Consult with a dealer.
Radial Tires
Smoother riding and longer wear life than many bias-ply tires. A highly recommended upgrade. Available for 13″ and larger wheels.
Aluminum Wheels
A stylish option available with bias-ply or radial tires for most models in 12″, 13″, 14″, 15″ and 16″ sizes.
Spare Tire and Carrier
The most important option to consider, every trailer should have a spare tire readily available. Consult dealer for recommended bracket for individual application.
Vault® Hubs
Vault® – The VAULT® “Hybrid Lubrication System” uses a semi-fluid oil in a pressurized chamber to give you the ultimate in wheel bearing lubrication and protection. At ambient temperatures the oil is thick with a viscosity approaching grease. As the bearing temperature rises during towing, the VAULT’s Hybrid Oil thins out replenishing the bearings with lubricant and dissipating heat. No inspection, no maintenance and no service required. *Vault® hubs require Dexter axle. Vault® and Kodiak® stainless disc brakes cannot be combined.
Consult a dealer to confirm application.
Brakes on All Axles
Important Safety Issue – Brake Requirements
Brake laws vary by state and require dealers to sell trailers that comply with the brake laws of the state where the trailer will be registered. This is a very important safety issue . For full information contact the appropriate state Motor Vehicle Department. As always, Load Rite recommends brakes on all axles where available.
Stainless Steel Disc Brakes
Optional stainless steel brakes available for most 14″, 15″ and 16″ wheel applications. Can be used with surge and electric over hydraulic actuators.*
May require optional axle installation. Check with your local dealer before ordering.
Stainless Brakelines
A valuable upgrade to any trailer, but especially those to see service in coastal regions with salt water exposure.
Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
EOH brakes offer electric in-cab control of standard hydraulic disc brakes. Requires in-cab controller and 7-pin round electrical connection to the tow vehicle.
LED Lighting
LED lights offer far greater reliability than incandescent fixtures. Long-lasting and waterproof design make these lights ideal for any trailer application.
2″ by 6″ Bunks
Marine grade carpet over 2″ x 6″ dimensional lumber.
Plastic Bunk Covers
These multi-purpose covers provide a smooth surface to help a metal-hulled boat or pontoon to slide easier when launching and loading. They also offer an insulating barrier to help prevent corrosion for metallic hulled craft. Protect your aluminum hull.
Highly recommended for metal-hulled boats and pontoon applications. Not recommended for gel-coat, plastic, or painted metal hulls.
Steady Rest
Carpeted bunk section positioned above and perpendicular to the trailer tongue. Provides an extra resting and balance point, and helps prevent keel contact with the tongue when loading in certain ramp conditions.
Carpeted Side Guides
Standard on most skiff and jon models.
Drop-Style Tongue Jack
An upgraded jack that provides greater capacities and fast setup with no need to swivel.
Tongue jacks are recommended on all trailers. Appearance and specifications vary by application. Tongue jacks are optional on all models where not original equipment.
Rubber Fenders
Rubber fenders are intended for use on dealer yard trailers. Yard trailers need the flexibility to adapt to many different hull shapes without imparting any damage in the process. Rubber fenders minimize the possibility of damage should the fender contact the boat hull.

SEA RAY AMBERJACK WITH TRIPLE AXLE TRAILER
Mound, Minnesota
I have owned this boat and trailer for over 13 years. During my ownership I have put 166.7 hours on the boat. I have not used it at all in the past two years and when I started the boat up this fall I found that the port motor is stuck. I am not going to fix it, I no longer use the boat, I will sell it at a discount and the new owner can deal with it. I have over 3 inches of manuals and documents for the boat including the annual logs from the original owner. Always a fresh water boat I bought this boat in Kentucky where it was used on the Ohio River. It's been on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota since. Loaded with options as shown in the photos and on the documentation. Please email me your questions. Thank you.

1991 Oregon Iron Works Tripple Axle 26 Trailer One of the local high end iron works company’s just bought a brand new triple axle galvanized Ez-Loader trailer priced right at about three times the cost of this one. The twin big block inboard V-8 jetboat boat which is shown in pictures both on the prior trailer and it's new one had a dry weight of just at 8,000 pounds and an over the scale loaded weight loaded of 10,600 pounds with a beam width of 8' 6" and a bottom with of 7' exactly. The boat itself measured 26' 6" and with the separate adjustable winch and bow jam stanchions, it will work with other comparable boats within a foot and maybe more either direction without much adjustment. It's a full 30' total in length. It's constructed with 5" X 2 3/4" channel iron frame and 5" x 3" boxed iron tongue. All three axles have drum brakes that appear to have been regularly serviced and the surge system looks to be new. The price is fair starting point, but all intelligent offers are welcome. The boat tongue weight on the new trailer is right at 820 pounds to put it in perspective. Keep in mind this is for just the trailer, so as not to be having to answer silly questions.

Transport a Sailboat - Costs & How To Ship
Last Updated by
Daniel Wade
June 15, 2022
Sailboat transport is an essential and very well-established boating service with numerous options.
Sailboats can be transported by single-axle trailers, multi-axle trailers, cargo ships, and occasionally trains. Sailboats can also be transported across an ocean on their own with the help of a hired captain and crew. Costs vary widely based on size and type, and they range from $200 to more than $15,000.
In this article, we’ll cover several of the most common sailboat transportation methods. We’ll cover the details and requirements of each method, along with the required method by sailboat size and type. Additionally, we’ll explore the average costs of each method for a typical production cruising sailboat.
We sourced the information used in this article from sailboat transport agencies along with government towing and transportation guides. We carefully researched pricing to help you get a basic idea of what it’ll cost to transport a sailboat.
Table of contents
Is Transporting a Sailboat Difficult?
It’s not necessarily difficult to transport a sailboat, but it does require care and careful planning. Your responsibilities as the sailboat owner range from trailer maintenance and careful driving to the organization of international logistics. In this article, we’ll discuss ways to streamline the process and make it easier.
Is Sailboat Transport Expensive?
Sailboat transport can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Obviously, moving a small sailboat is relatively cheap in comparison, especially if you already have a truck and a trailer.
The cost of transporting a larger boat is higher, as you’ll probably need to hire a shipping company or a crew.
There are multiple ways to transport a large sailboat, and the more economical method isn’t always immediately evident. Some boats may be cheaper to ship on a specially-designed yacht carrying vessel, while others may be cheaper if you hire a delivery crew.
Pricing varies between boats, locations, and destinations, so it’s essential to research all available methods and request multiple quotes. If you do, you could save thousands on transport and delivery, not to mention insurance costs to protect your vessel from possible damage.
Sailboat Transport Methods
There are several ways to transport a sailboat, and the ideal method depends upon the size and dry weight of the vessel. Dry weight is distinct from displacement, so it’s important to ensure that you have the correct number. Here are the most common ways to transport sailboats short and long distances.
Self Towing
Some sailboats can be towed, though the vehicle, trailer type, and license requirements vary based on size. The smallest and lightest dinghies and pocket cruisers can be towed by most typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed.
Larger sailboats, in the 20-foot range and longer, usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV. A half-ton gasoline pickup truck is sufficient for lighter vessels, as long as the dry weight doesn’t exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity.
Also, remember that some automakers determine towing capacity under ideal test conditions, so your truck’s actual towing ability may be slightly lower than its rating.
You’ll have to collapse or remove the mast, boom, and standing rigging of the sailboat and secure it, regardless of its size.
Most trailer sailers can be towed by half-ton or 3/4 ton single rear wheel trucks. Larger sailboats, such as towable coastal cruisers, may require a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck. This setup is often found with a dually 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck.
The Basics of Towing Rules in the United States
The rules of the road are clear when it comes to towing. With a Class C license (a standard driver’s license), the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet. The maximum length of a Class C trailer surface is 53 feet.
Length usually isn’t the issue when it comes to towing sailboats. The maximum width of a class C trailer is 8 ft 6 in, which includes the items on the trailer. The regulations mean that the beam of your boat can’t exceed about 8 feet, give or take a couple of inches.
With a more advanced license or a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you can tow a much larger trailer and drive a semi-truck. Some larger sailboats with greater beam width can be towed this way, though only if they remain below the maximum height.
Height requirements for trailers vary between 13 ft, 6 inches to 14 ft, depending on the location. This is measured from the ground to the top of the item on the trailer.
Be sure to plan your route carefully if you’re towing a boat with a full keel, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are much shorter than 13 feet.
Professional Towing Services
It’s usually best to leave the towing to professionals, especially if you’re towing a large boat. Experienced drivers with big rigs and commercial licenses can transport surprisingly large vessels safely but at a cost. The benefit of using a professional service is that you’re taking the risk off your shoulders.
Many professional towing services offer insurance, which is essential. Insurance protects the loading and unloading of the boat and covers any damages that occur en route. For the price, it’s a no-brainer.
In most cases, the tow company will not be able to help you launch your boat. You’re responsible for arranging boat crane services at your destination. It’s best to plan carefully, as you may end up paying more if you make the driver wait too long.
Cost of Professional Sailboat Towing Services
Cost varies widely based on the company, location, and size of the load. Most towing companies have a base fee, a fee of the assessed load, and then a per-mile charge. Some companies have different fee structures.
Companies that offer quotes usually predict a charge of between $500 and $1,000 for typical trips, though it can cost as little as $300 if you have a relatively small boat and it only needs to travel a short distance.
Shipping a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship
Large and small sailboats are frequently sent across oceans via cargo ships. This method is time-tested and relatively cost-effective, though it’s not as straightforward as just sailing the boat across.
Some people hire an agent to arrange shipping, which is the easiest and most reliable way to have a headache-free experience.
Shipping a sailboat by sea is slower than over-the-road transport, and schedules are less flexible. Often, you’ll have to wait for a spot to open up on a specifically-designed yacht carrying ship.
Once the ships are loaded, they set out at predetermined times that might be months ahead of when you booked. The best way to ensure you get a spot on a yacht shipping vessel is to plan well in advance of when you actually need to transport the vessel.
Logistics are the greatest challenge of shipping a boat on a larger ship. If you don’t work with an agent or an accommodating shipping company, you could have to work out the following and more:
- Transportation to the shipping yard
- Loading and securing instructions
- Shipping destination
- Payments to various services
- Customs in the destination country (if outside of the U.S.)
- Taxes and import fees
- Declarations
- Inspections
- Unloading at the destination
- Transportation from the destination port to the marina
As you can see, there are lots of reasons to hire a professional to manage the minutiae of shipping a sailboat. The last thing you want is to have your boat seized at customs or have it dropped off in an unguarded yard in the wrong location.
Cost to Ship a Sailboat on a Cargo Ship
Shipping costs for ocean-going boat transport are lower than many people expect. A lot of factors are involved, including the size of the boat, its height (from keel to mast top), its displacement, and the distance it needs to be shipped.
The lowest prices you’ll find to ship an average-sized boat are around $3,000 to $5,000. A more typical estimate for an average sailboat is between $6,000 and $10,000. Some vessels and destinations cost upwards of $15,000. Costs tend to increase with the size and distance, and the value of your sailboat also plays a part.
Prices in the yacht shipping industry are competitive, which is why it’s relatively affordable to ship a boat over an ocean. It’s surprisingly popular as well, and there are more than a dozen shipping companies offering long-distance ocean transport specifically for yachts of various sizes.
Hired Delivery
Hired crews for boat delivery is the other way to transport a sailboat over the water. Crew services find a captain and a small professional crew to sail your boat for you.
This is a great option for large boats, as it’s often less expensive and time-consuming than shipping it on a larger vessel.
Hired crew delivery services are offered by companies and experienced individuals. You can even find a trusted friend to crew your boat for you, and they can hire a crew member or two to accompany them for the journey.
While under hire, the crew will be living in your boat. Crew members come from all backgrounds, and many sailors spend a summer or two working for a charter service to make some money or get free transportation to other countries.
Cost to Hire a Delivery Crew
Hired crew delivery costs vary, though the more hands you need, the more it costs. Crews and captains usually charge daily rates for yacht delivery services. A fast sailboat is almost always cheaper to transport than a slow sailboat.
As an example, we’ll use the services of Captain James Lowe , who is a USCG licensed 200-ton Master. As of the writing of this article, Captain James Lowe charges between $350 and $425 per day for his services, depending on the size of the vessel. Deckhands cost $175 per day per person, which is in addition to the Captain’s charges.
These are the base rates, and they’re a good representation of what professional crewed delivery costs. You may find cheaper rates with other groups or individuals, but it’s worth the cost if you want a trustworthy and experienced crew.
Additional charges often include transportation costs (to and from the destinations), fuel costs (for heating, cooking, and motoring), and a deposit is usually required for fuel. These costs are impossible to predict without knowing your specific plans, so it’s best to reach out to Captain James Lowe for a specialized quote.
Hired crew delivery services usually have a minimum crew requirement for different boat sizes and types. In this case, sailboats require a minimum of one deckhand in addition to a captain. Larger sailing vessels of 65 feet or greater require two or more additional deckhands.

Every boat owner needs a great boat trailer to go with their watercraft. Boat trailers allow you to take the boat in and out of the water for storage or service, and they also allow you to transport your boat from one body of water to the next.
When you’re selecting a trailer for your boat, you’ll want to consider the weight of your boat and the length of your boat. You want your trailer to be slightly longer than your boat, and you want to ensure the trailer has a high enough gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, to handle your watercraft. Keep in mind the weight of your boat is the boat plus the engine, fuel, and onboard gear. Lighter weight boats can be towed using a single axle boat trailer, but if you have a larger boat, you’ll want to invest in a double axle boat trailer.
We carry leading boat trailer brands like EZ Loader and Magic Tilt so that your next trip to the boat ramp is quick and easy. Get started by searching new boat trailers today.

Boat Trailers: The Ultimate Buying Guide
Written by Carolyn Jackson
See a real price on boats with GoRollick. See Pricing
Maybe you just bought your first boat. Congratulations! Or perhaps you just upgraded to a larger boat. Or perhaps you’re just curious. Either way, when you are in the boating world, understanding boat trailers are usually an additional requirement. Although you can leave your boat at a marina in the water year-round, there are some exciting benefits to utilizing a boat trailer:
- You can transport your boat to different bodies of water at any time
- You can easily remove your boat in the case of inclement weather
- If you permanently trailer your boat, you will save money on slip fees, blistering, and bottom repairs.
In this ultimate buying guide to boat trailers, we’ll discuss boat trailers’ ins and outs: how to pick one, how much they cost, and how to use a boat trailer. So strap in, and let’s get rolling.
Key Takeaways:
- Boat trailers are convenient and cost-effective for boaters
- Most boat trailers will cost between $500 and $5,000
- Learning to haul a boat trailer safely is just as important as learning how to operate a boat safely

What are the Benefits of a Boat Trailer?
Access and mobility are two of the most rewarding benefits of owning or having access to a boat trailer. Yes, storing your boat at a dock or marina adds ease of use, but without a trailer, you are limited to that one body of water and unable to relocate your boat or send it to dry storage for the winter.
The main benefit is the ability to travel with your boat and take it to new locations, be it a lake, ocean, river, inlet, or bay. You could even visit multiple spots within the same weekend. If you live in a colder climate, you can transport your boat to a warmer body of water during the winter and continue to enjoy the benefits of boating. If you are a fisherman, you can visit different spots to try fishing for other varieties. If you are a water skier or water sports athlete, you can try out new bodies of water with like-minded communities or trick courses available.
Another benefit of owning a trailer is peace of mind. If a hurricane or derecho or any other dangerous conditions roll into where you store your boat on the water, you can quickly load the boat on a trailer and take it somewhere safe on land. The likelihood of damage is significantly less for a boat stored on dry land vs. a boat docked in the water. If you consistently take your boat out of the water after each use, you also decrease your time and money spent on repairs like bottom fixes and blistering and save money on slip fees.
Long story short, access to a boat trailer is always a good idea, and understanding how to use a boat trailer safely is equally essential. You want your boat to last for many years, and you want as few bumps in the water as possible during that time; utilizing a boat trailer aids in that goal.
How Do I Pick a Boat Trailer?
The two most important factors when choosing a boat trailer are size and frame. You will need to select a trailer that suits your boat’s size, and then you can choose the frame based on your personal preferences.
Trailer Size
Step one is choosing a trailer size that actually fits your boat. Although it seems obvious, you will need to know the length and weight of your boat. To get the correct length, measure from the farthest point at the bow to the end of the hull’s running surface.
Generally, a trailer is about two feet longer than the boat it carries.
Pro Tip: when determining your boat’s length, do not use Length Overall (LOA). LOA can include extended swim platforms and other add-ons that will not influence the trailer’s length.
Trailer Weight
When determining the boat’s weight to estimate your trailer needs, you will need to go a little deeper than just what the manufacturer says the weight is on the spec sheets. The spec sheets do not include any cargo you have on board, fuel weight, additional features you have added, water, and other items like batteries, gear, etc.
The weight is essential for determining the axles on the trailer. Typically, boats over 3,500 pounds required a tandem axle trailer, and boats under the 3,500-pound mark can use a single axle trailer.
Boat Trailer Frame
There are two types of frames for boat trailers: steel and aluminum. There are benefits to each frame type, and which you choose comes down to personal preference.
Steel Frames
Pros:
- Strong and durable
- Well-protected wiring and brake lines
- Can be painted to match boat or towing vehicle
- Prone to rust and corrosion
- Painting, though inexpensive, can require additional maintenance
Pro Tip: If you want a steel boat trailer and do not care about the color, opt for a galvanized finish. Especially if you are using a boat in saltwater, this offers protection from corrosion that paint will not.
Aluminum Frames
- Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
- Less strong than steel
- Less protection for wiring and brake lines
Boat Trailer Brands
When selecting a boat trailer, you might feel overwhelmed by the amount of selection available. Most of the time, your manufacturer will have a preferred brand to use with their boats, or the boat dealer will be able to select some top choices for you. Nonetheless, here are some of the most common boat trailer brands on the market today:
BackTrack Trailers
Bass Cat Boats
Bear Trailer Manufacturing, Inc.
BoatMate Trailers, LLC
Continental Trailers
Coyote Manufacturing Company
EZ Loader Boat Trailers, Inc.
Float-On Corp.
Gateway Materials
King Trailers, Inc.
Load Rite Trailers, Inc.
Midwest Industries, Inc
Rocket Trailers
Rogue Jet Boatworks, Inc.
Skeeter Boats, Inc
Trailmaster and Vanguard
Venture Trailers, Inc.
Waterland Manufacturing, Inc.
Yacht Club and Eagle Trailers
How Much Does a Boat Trailer Cost?
The cost of a boat trailer can range from $500 to over $10,000. The price depends on the materials, size, carrying weight, and design. We are going to give some examples of different types of common boat trailers.
Single-Axle Boat Trailer Cost
A single-axle boat trailer can cost anywhere from $700 to over $4,000. Smaller 10’ to 14’ boats are usually under $1,500 but remember that weight, towing capacity, size, and accessories can always increase the price tag.
For single-axle trailers that carry boats in the 16’ to 21’ range, you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $4,000.
Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes you pay for a brand name. More popular and well-known brands such as LoadRite or EXLoader can charge more for their products for this reason.
Example:
Single Axle Pontoon Boat Trailer for 21′-23’ pontoons — $2045
- 2600 lb. capacity
- Trailer weighs 675 lbs

Double-Axle Boat Trailer Cost
A double-axle boat trailer will cost more than its single-axle counterpart, but they can safely handle longer, heavier, and larger boats. You can expect to pay between $1,500 and $6,000 for a double-axle boat trailer. Most boats that require a double-axle boat trailer are in the 18’ to 25’ range.
Tandem-Axle Boat Trailer for 24′-25′ Pontoon Boats — $3,595
- 5,500 lb. capacity
- Trailer weighs 1400 lbs.
What is a pontoon boat? We got you covered here .
Personal Watercraft (PWC) Boat Trailers Cost
Personal watercrafts like jet skis also require a trailer to move from location to location. Fortunately, manufacturers make smaller single-axle trailers specifically for personal watercrafts. These trailers usually cost between $500 and $4,000, depending on the frame material, towing capacity, weight, and size.
If you own two personal watercrafts, there are double trailers (available in both single and tandem-axle) for hauling both jet skis simultaneously.
Ironton Jet Ski and Personal Watercraft Trailer Kit — $580
- Steel Frame
- 610 lb. load capacity
2019 Magic Tilt Double PWC Single-Axle Trailer — $3,000
- 2,000 lb. load capacity

How Do I Haul a Boat Using a Trailer?
The first thing you need to think about when gearing up to haul a boat using a trailer is your tow vehicle. You need to have a vehicle available with a towing capacity to carry both the trailer’s weight and the fully loaded (gassed up, water tanks full, gear on board) weight of the watercraft. To find your vehicle’s towing capacity, consult your manufacturer or your manufacturer guidebook for your vehicle.
Another way to determine towing capacity for your vehicle is to follow these steps:
- Find out the curb weight of your vehicles, which is located on the VIN sticker
- Add the weight of passengers, fuel, and cargo to the curb weight
- Subtract this number from your vehicle’s GCWR, which is also found on the VIN sticker (you may have to look this up using your VIN# if it’s not on the door sticker)
= Your vehicle’s max towing capacity
The second thing to think about when towing a boat using a trailer is your hitch. This is what connects the trailer to your vehicle. Boat trailer hitches are rated by ‘Class,’ ranging from Class I, Class II, Class III, Class IV, Class V. Class I hitches are for smaller lightweight boats under 2,000lbs. Class II hitches are good for loads up to the 3,500lb mark. Class III hitches are for boats up to 5,000lbs. Class IV goes up to 12,000lbs, and Class V can tow as much as 18,000lbs. The capacity of the hitch includes the weight of the boat and the trailer’s weight.
Okay, now that you have all the properly fitted materials, it’s time to hook up the trailer to your tow vehicle. Here are the steps for this process:
1. Align the hitch and ball, then lower the trailer hitch down over the ball.
2. Close the latch and insert the safety pin.
Pro Tip: Never tow without the safety pin in place because the hitch might pop off the ball when you hit a bump
3. Cross the safety chains, and attach them to the tow vehicle. They should always be crossed so if the hitch fails, the chains will support the trailer tongue, and it won’t dig into the asphalt
- Safety chains are underneath the ball and hitch and criss-cross each other. They hook into a specified area to ensure that if the ball and hitch fails, you still have a backup safety measure, so the trailer doesn’t fall on the road or crash.
4. If your trailer has brakes, attach the safety line to the tow vehicle. (This will engage the brakes if, for some reason, the trailer comes free from the vehicle)
- These are safety brakes that are built into the trailer itself. If the vehicle becomes disconnected from the trailer, the wire will be pulled, and it will activate the trailer brakes so it will slow down. Think like the bracelet you wear on your wrist when you ride a jet ski that turns the machine off if you fall off.
5. Plug in the lights, and run a full check to make sure they’re all working.
- Your vehicle should be compatible with towing, which means there will be a clear place to plug in the trailer’s lights, which is a wire that comes with every trailer. Simply plug this into your vehicle (like plugging in a power cord) and then test them to ensure it is working correctly.
How to Get a Boat onto a Trailer
If this is your first boat or your first time using a boat trailer, you might be wondering how the heck you get the boat on it from in the water. It may seem obvious, but step one is to drive the boat to a docking site where you can back your boat trailer into the water and drive the boat up onto the trailer. There are a few best practices for getting a boat onto a trailer:
- Idle up to the launch ramp while you wait for the tow vehicle to back up into the water.
- The tow vehicle should be in park and use the parking brake once in position in the water.
- The tow vehicle driver can get out of the vehicle and help guide the boat onto the trailer.
- Make sure the bow peak is aligned with the bow stop on the trailer.
- The boat should be able to float onto the back ⅔ of the trailer bunks.
- Be conscientious of an outboard engine. If the boat docking area is shallow, you may need to trim the engine.
- Once the boat is on the bow stop of the trailer, your helper (driver of tow vehicle) can use the winch strap to pull the boat up snug to the winch post. Once this is done, secure the safety chain to prevent the boat from slipping.
- If the boat is crooked, you will need to back down the ramp and try to straighten it.
- Once the boat is secure, pull the tow vehicle out of the water and finish securing the boat out of the way of the launchpad.
Remember that every boat is different, and although these guidelines are helpful, you will need to take it slow and see how your boat reacts to launching and trailering.
Tips and Tricks for Towing a Boat Safely
Towing anything can be a challenge. It adds a lot of length to your vehicle, making turns and high speeds more difficult. We highly recommend practicing in an open parking lot or area before you tow anything on the road. To ensure you are towing a boat as safely as possible, we have some general guidelines and recommendations to follow:
1. Always check your vehicle and the trailer to ensure everything is in street-ready working order.
- Connections are all tight
- Walk around vehicle
- Ensure you have a chalk block
- Check all the lights (hazards, brakes, etc)
- Make sure the load is secure, and everything is strapped down
2. If you sense swaying when towing, stop and recheck everything.
3. Make wide turns to avoid clipping a curb or other obstructions.
4. Leave extra following room between your vehicle and those in front of you. When towing a heavy load, braking distance may be significantly increased.
5. When wind-blast shoves your rig sideways, you can minimize the effect by taking your foot off the accelerator. Do not step on the brakes.
6. Learn to use your side-view mirrors and not your rear-view mirrors. Consider getting an extender for your side-view mirrors if you need additional visibility.
7. As soon as you arrive at the boat ramp, walk back to the trailer hubs and check that they’re cool to the touch. If they’re hot, your bearings aren’t functioning correctly and need to be serviced immediately.
8. Practice! This is not something anyone knows how to do well without some practice. Practice making right and left turns, practice backing up, and practice accelerating.
