The bigger version of the very popular Iroquois, the Comanche 32 is just as robust but much more modern. She offers more comfort and a load capacity far superior to that of her little sister.

Its faceted coachroof and (very) raked bows obviously give the Comanche 32 a dated silhouette, but this model deserves attention, if only because of the rather affordable price. Despite her short length, the Comanche 32 is well suited to long distance cruising: she is pretty seaworthy for her size and is safe thanks to its four watertight compartments. In 1978, this model was positioned between the Iroquois 30 and the Cherokee 35 and offered a large load capacity – all within her 32 feet. Obviously, for long periods on board, this boat is ideally suited to the single-hander or a couple. As standard, the Comanche was delivered with fixed keels in order to gain living space inside the hulls. However, daggerboards could be ordered as an option (6 feet / 1.82m draft in the lowered position). The rudders are protected by strong skegs, allowing for stress-free beaching. This model was also available in a motor-sailer version with two 15 HP diesel engines, an interior helm station and a raised deck.

Oh this is a lovely boat - she is like a tardis inside and she has such lovely original features. You can see the workmanship when you look at the original chart storage cupboard - it is original and is beautifully fitted. The boat was laid up ashore between 1987 and 1998, which in part explains her fabulous condition. The shape of the hulls minimises any "slamming". This is a lovely example of a Commache 32 - come and have a look at her and see how beautifuuly she has been maintained.

I have never owned a cat, in fact, I have never even sailed in one, but those who have would seldom revert to a mono-hull. The advantages of level sailing, voluminous accommodation, potentially fast passage making are well known and valid. This Comanche has been ashore since last season. Well used and much loved by her previous elderly owner she's not quite a project YET, but she needs rescuing by a keen owner who will provide a few bucketfuls of TLC and put her to rights and once more to sea.

Prout catamarans (UK) have have a history going back 50 years, with a reputation for tough, high quality, popular design and excellent ocean going capability. Roland and Francis Prout were successful canoeists who paddled for Great Britain in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. Soon after, they decided to tie two of their sleek cold-moulded kayaks together with bamboo poles resulting in an efficient high-speed sailing craft. The Prout business grew from those successful experiments in 1954 to the most famous and well respected catamaran producing company in the world, picking up a ‘Queens award for industry’ along the way. In 1964 it was a Prout catamaran that became the first multi-hull to circumnavigate the globe.

There were more Prout catamarans circumnavigating the world than any other design at one time. All Prout catamarans are designed and constructed by yachtsmen to combine technology with traditional boat building skills. Prout Catamarans was the first boat builder in the UK to receive Lloyds ISO 9002 quality standard recognition. Prout prides themselves in keeping in touch with owners through an excellent after-sales service and a strong owners association.

Prout 45 (Florida)

Lovely example of a classic Prout Catamaran. Privately owned and never chartered, this catamaran is a three cabin owners’ version. The owners’ suite is to starboard. 

The 45S Prout incorporates heavy duty Keels on each hull that protects the boat from groundings, protects the propellers and rudders, and allows the boat to beached for maintenance! 

This Catamaran is set up for extended and independent cruising and live aboard with the addition of 2800watts of solar panels, Relion Lithium Batteries, 300ft of main anchor chain, 2- life rafts, custom extended (2′) sugar scoops, all new AC’s and electronics, new Running rigging, etc.…

Prout 45 (Caribbean)

S/V Mirounga is a 1997 Prout 45 three/four berth owner’s Version catamaran for sale by owner. She was designed to be the ultimate ocean-cruising catamaran in comfort and safety. Designed by David Feltham and built from 1995 by Prout Catamarans on Canvey Island. She is solid fiberglass under the waterline, cored above the waterline, with Kevlar reinforcement. The original Prout Catamarans are renowned for their safety, load-carrying capabilities, reliability, ease of handling and comfort, and were designed for long-term liveaboard cruising and ocean passages.

Port Hull Mirounga has an interior layout based on the standard family version. The whole port hull is the owner’s stateroom with a  berth in the aft cabin, vanity, drawers and various lockers, with large hanging lockers in the aft cabin and mid-ships.…

Sailcraft Comanche 32

Sailcraft Comanche 32 is a 32 ′ 2 ″ / 9.8 m catamaran sailboat designed by J.R. (Rod) Macalpine-Downie and built by Sailcraft Ltd. starting in 1978.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
