For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from. 

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you. 

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece. 

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter. 

• A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
• A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria. 

The three tax brackets are as follows; 

• VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
• VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters. 
• Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures. 

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination. 

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens. 

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

• Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
• Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service. 
• Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here. 
• Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
• Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination. 

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. Skippered Charters

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

3 WAYS TO CHARTER A YACHT

We provide a selection of three charter options: Bareboat Charters , Skippered Charters , and Crewed Charters . Opting for a Bareboat Charter means you have the freedom to captain the yacht yourself, requiring only a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you don't possess an ICC or simply prefer to sit back and relax, you have the option to have one of our experienced skippers join your journey, taking the helm for you. We collaborate with a network of highly skilled, multilingual professionals who are eager to come on board.

It's worth noting that some of our larger catamarans and motor yachts are exclusively available as Crewed Charters. With this option, a dedicated crew of at least two individuals, typically a skipper and a hostess or cook, will cater to your every need, ensuring a truly indulgent experience for you and your guests.

This Tiny Greek Island Has the Clearest Water in the World

More than 32 million people traveled to Greece in 2023, making it one of the most visited countries in the world. There's a lot to love about Greece , including its fantastic history, art, food, and culture. However, there's one other big reason people seem to fall in love with vacationing in the Mediterranean nation — its crystal clear and utterly inviting waters. In fact, there's one beach in Greece that's home to the clearest water in the world. 

In late 2023, Florida Panhandle released its list of beaches with the clearest water in the world. To come to its conclusion, it started by creating a seed list of 50 beaches across the globe that ranked the highest on traveler review websites. It then calculated each beach's score based on the percentage of reviews that mention "clear water." In total, the team analyzed more than 2.4 million reviews to find its winners.

According to the data, Prassa Beach in Kimolos, Greece, has the clearest water in the world.

"Stretching on for [8,497 miles], the Greek coastline is the longest in the Mediterranean Basin, a sea famous for its crystal-clear waters and rich blue hue," the team shared in the findings. It's no wonder, then, that the majority of the world's top beaches for clear water are located in Greece, led by Prassa Beach on the island of Kimolos, for which 43.56% of publicly available traveler reviews mention the phrase 'clear water.'"

Kimolos is also right next door to another Travel + Leisure favorite, the island of Milos, which has made several appearances on the World's Best Awards and is often lauded as the most photogenic place in Greece , making it little surprise that its neighboring island has some picture-perfect beauty too. 

Joining Prassa Beach on the list of clearest waters in the world is another Greek beach, Gennadi Beach on the island of Rhodes in second, followed by Pileh Bay in Thailand, Agios Dimitrios Beach on the mainland in Greece, and Agia Anna Beach on the Greek Island of Naxos rounding out the top five. So, as you can see, if it's clear water you're after, Greece is the place to go. And you'll certainly be in good company while you're there.

I n June 2022, Greece’s leading shipowners gathered for a conference at the Four Seasons resort in Vouliagmeni, a wealthy suburb south of Athens. Coming just three months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the country’s shippers had an unorthodox take on the war roiling the global economy.

"This is a tragedy for humanity, but at the same time it creates opportunities,” said George Prokopiou , one of the world’s biggest owners of tankers. “We need to be able to take advantage of these opportunities,” added Evangelos Marinakis, the tycoon behind shipping firm Capital Maritime and Trading.

During that same panel , titled “Greek Shipping at the Forefront of Global Trade,” Prokopiou also made a bold prediction: “By the end of the year we'll see very, very good markets in all segments. I'm very optimistic. Ships will command much higher prices.”

That prediction came true, helping propel both Prokopiou, 77, and Marinakis, 56, into the billionaire ranks as the value of their ships jumped and the size of their empires expanded. Prokopiou and Marinakis, who are worth $2.6 billion and $3.6 billion, respectively, have ordered 123 new ships worth nearly $13 billion since 2022, according to VesselsValue. Prokopiou’s four shipping firms own 173 tankers including those under construction, 54 more than in 2021.

These maritime moguls are part of a new generation of Greek billionaires making waves on land and at sea. Altogether, Forbes estimates there are now at least 12 shipping billionaires in Greece, more than at any other time in history. Seven of them are making their debut in Forbes’ billionaire ranks. Altogether they are worth $32 billion—the equivalent of roughly 12% of the country’s gross domestic product.

These tycoons are the latest in a line of swashbuckling pioneers hailing back to iconic figures like Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos, who launched the global oil tanker trade after World War II and became famous for their glamorous marriages and lifestyles. This newer group has been in shipping for decades but so far has kept a lower profile. (Despite their success, none would speak to Forbes , while their representatives either declined to comment or did not respond.)

What’s new is that the value of their holdings—particularly tankers—has soared by billions of dollars over the past two years, as the war in Ukraine sent shockwaves through global commodities markets and set off a scramble for large tankers needed to ferry oil around the world. Altogether, companies owned by Greek shipping tycoons ordered new ships worth nearly $200 billion and sold 68 older ships for almost $3 billion between January 2022 and March 2024, according to VesselsValue.

"Shipowners are the biggest capitalists in this country,” says Gelina Harlaftis, a professor of maritime history and director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas in Crete.

FLEETS AND FORTUNES

Forbes now counts a record 12 greek shipping billionaires. seven of them are making their debut in the three-comma-club and another, george economou, returns after a 16-year-absence..

After Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. and Europe moved to ban seaborne imports of Russian oil and later imposed a price cap on Russian oil, designed to limit Putin’s profits while ensuring that oil would keep flowing. Many Western firms decided to quit the trade altogether, deeming it too risky. Not the Greeks, who have a history of operating at the fringes of the global economy.

While there is no evidence that any of these billionaires violated sanctions, they definitely took advantage of the situation. “If there is a chance to [do] business legally, they will exploit the opportunity,” says Ioannis Theotokas, a professor of management of shipping companies at the University of Piraeus in Greece.

Before the war, most Russian oil went to Europe. After the European ban, much of it was redirected to India and China, which meant much longer trips for tankers—and higher rates for shipowners making those trips. A typical journey from Russia’s Baltic Sea ports to the west coast of India, the most popular route for Russian oil, can generate an estimated $8 million in revenues—60% higher than the going rate in October 2023 and five times the rate in 2021.

The Greeks have directly benefited from those higher prices. Between April 2022 and February 2024, Greek firms shipped 28% of all Russian oil exports, according to an analysis from the Kyiv School of Economics’ KSE Institute, based on data from commodities intelligence firm Kpler. Firms owned by Greek moguls—George Economou’s TMS Tankers, Andreas Martinos’ Minerva Marine and Prokopiou’s Dynacom Tankers—made up three of the five largest shippers of Russian oil over that time period, with Dubai-based shell companies set up by Russia’s state-owned Sovcomflot taking the other two slots. (While the latter two were sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in December 2023 and February this year, none of the Greek firms have been sanctioned and there is no indication they have violated any of the sanctions on Russia.) A spokesperson for Minerva Marine declined to comment, while representatives for TMS and Dynacom did not respond to questions.

“[The Greeks] are just running 30% of the Russian crude flows, but it's enough for them to basically finance a new shipbuilding spree,” says Viktor Katona, lead crude analyst at Kpler.

Tankers are now tied up in longer voyages, ramping up overall demand. That’s sparked a surge that’s sent new tanker prices up by more than 40% since 2021, according to Athens-based shipbroker Xclusiv. And aging ships that would once have been scrapped are now selling for premium prices on the secondhand market. Most of them have sold to the so-called “shadow fleet,” made up of companies registered in obscure jurisdictions, with ships that sail without Western insurance and obfuscate their location or conduct ship-to-ship transfers to trade Russian oil in violation of Western sanctions. Even fifteen-year-old tankers are now selling for more than double the going price in early 2021.

S hipping firms have long played an outsize role in the Greek economy. Greek firms own 17% of the entire global shipping fleet—more than any other country—including 31% of the world’s oil tankers. At nearly $150 billion, it’s the most valuable fleet in the world, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and Clarksons Research. In 2022, shipping firms made up 7% of Greece's GDP and contributed $22 billion to the country’s economy, per the Union of Greek Shipowners.

It’s also a good place to do business. Under an article enshrined in Greece’s 1953 constitution, local shipowners are exempt from personal or corporate income tax on profits from their vessels. Instead, they pay a “tonnage tax” based on each ship’s cargo-carrying capacity, which applies both to ships registered in Greece and abroad—as long as the company maintains a management office in Greece. And in 2022, Athens passed a law reducing the voluntary tax on dividends and capital gains for shipping companies to 5%, from the previous 10%.

Where do those virtually tax-free profits go? Besides paying for new tankers, Greece’s shipping billionaires have plowed their cash into soccer teams, TV channels, newspapers, real estate and the quintessential billionaire purchase: yachts. Most of their firms operate out of the same southern suburbs of Athens on the Aegean coast, and they own palatial homes in the same upscale neighborhoods. New billionaire Diamantis Diamantides owns several villas next door to the Four Seasons resort in Vouliagmeni, down the road from the Armonia Residences, a collection of luxury apartments owned by George Economou, who returns to the billionaire ranks this year after 16 years missing the cut.

They compete as much on the airwaves and the soccer pitch as they do in the shipping lanes. Greece’s two most successful professional soccer teams, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, are majority-owned by magnates Evangelos Marinakis and Giannis Alafouzos, respectively. The two men also own rival media conglomerates and TV channels, while Alafouzos’ brother Themistocles operates the nation’s largest newspapers. While the Alafouzos brothers aren’t billionaires individually, Forbes estimates they’re worth a collective $1.2 billion.

Not surprisingly, some of these tycoons have also dabbled in politics. Marinakis serves on the city council of Piraeus, a port city south of Athens, while Athanasios Martinos recently completed his term as the civil administrator of Mount Athos, an autonomous region home to some 1,780 Orthodox monks. His daughter, Georgia, served in the Greek parliament from 2012 to 2023.

As the value of their fleets skyrocketed, they’ve also gone on spending sprees outside of Greece. Marinakis, who bought 80% of English Premier League team Nottingham Forest in 2017, shelled out nearly $350 million on new players over the past two seasons and also announced a $22 million investment in Portuguese soccer team Rio Ave last November.

Economou and Prokopiou, meanwhile, have built up sprawling real estate portfolios. Prokopiou owns an estimated $90 million worth of properties including homes in Portofino, Italy and in London’s tony Mayfair neighborhood, as well as the $42 million, 349-foot megayacht Dream, fitted with two outdoor swimming pools and a helipad. Economou has an estimated $150 million empire of homes in London, Manhattan, Saint-Tropez and St. Barts, plus a $250 million art collection with works by Pablo Picasso and Kazuo Shiraga. Part of it is on display in his private museum in Athens.

Shipping in Greece tends to be a family affair. Several of Greece’s current crop of shipping barons, including Marinakis and brothers Andreas , Athanasios and Constantinos Martinos (all individual billionaires), followed in their parents’ footsteps but expanded their shipping businesses to new heights. Others like Prokopiou built dynasties from scratch but have already started passing the baton to their children: Prokopiou’s daughter Ioanna runs one of his four companies, Sea Traders, while the son of Diamantis Diamantides runs his own tanker firm.

The Astir peninsula, located south of Athens, is home to some of the priciest real estate in Greece, including properties owned by billionaires Diamantis Diamantides and George Economou.

G reek shippers have never been afraid to make money at controversial times. In the 1960s, the Vardinoyannis family—currently helmed by billionaire Vardis , aged 91—famously attempted to break a UN embargo and ship oil to the white minority regime in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) via a pipeline in Mozambique. After a standoff with the British navy, the ship departed without unloading its cargo.

Leaked documents seen by Forbes also show the extent to which at least one Greek shipper went to win contracts with Russian leaders. In December 2016, Prokopiou penned a letter to Igor Sechin , the CEO of Russia’s state-owned oil company Rosneft and one of Putin’s right-hand men. He wanted to expand his business with Moscow and had the letter hand delivered to Sechin, proposing a “mutually beneficial” deal to trade Rosneft’s oil and gas on his fleet of tankers. The letter also included a draft agreement outlining how Prokopiou’s fleet would trade Russian fossil fuels directly to India and China, bypassing the world’s largest oil traders. The letter was part of the Babakov Leaks, a trove of documents from the email account of Russian member of parliament Alexander Babakov, shared by the Ukrainian hacker collective Cyber Resistance with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its partners, including Forbes . Representatives for Prokopiou and Rosneft did not respond to requests for comment.

More recently, in June 2020, the U.S. imposed sanctions on two ships owned by Prokopiou's Dynacom and new billionaire Constantinos Martinos’ Thenamaris for carrying Venezuelan oil. They were removed from the sanctions list less than a month later, after both firms pledged to stop trading with Venezuela.

"The Greeks control the commercial fleet," says Kpler's Katona. "And they're also very entrepreneurial. When Venezuela opened up after the sanctions [were eased in 2023], the Greek shippers were the first in."

When Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022, some shipowners—such as Maria Angelicoussis , Greece’s richest person—vowed not to carry Russian oil. But for others, any caution they may have had in the weeks after the invasion soon dissipated.

“When the war started, we took a decision not to go to Russia because like everybody else, we were very emotional and we felt very distressed with what was going on,” said the chief financial officer of Alafouzos’ Okeanis Eco Tankers in an earnings call in August 2022. “But as time progressed, we realized that, first of all, a lot of our competitors and all the majors were lifting oil from Russia.”

Last November, Reuters reported that several Greek companies—including Economou’s TMS Tankers, Andreas Martinos’ Minerva Marine and Constantinos Martinos’ Thenamaris—had stopped shipping Russian oil. But according to ship tracking data from MarineTraffic analyzed by Forbes , there are at least 37 tankers owned by TMS, Minerva and Thenamaris that departed Russian ports since February or are currently en route to Russia. Trading Russian oil and oil products remains legal, as long as firms comply with the price cap of $60 per barrel of oil and separate price caps for products such as diesel and fuel oil. Spokespeople for Thenamaris and Minerva Marine declined to comment on commercial matters, while representatives for TMS did not respond to questions.

“Two years after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has amassed more than $650 billion in revenue from its export of fossil fuels—of this, $193 billion is from the sale of crude oil,” says Andrii Pozniak, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s anti-corruption agency NACP. “Greek shipowners who transported Russian oil played a significant role in this process.”

Unlike with oil, Europe hasn’t taken action to limit imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). While it’s a relatively smaller part of their business compared to oil, it’s created even more opportunities. Politico and Belgian newspaper Le Soir recently reported that Prokopiou had lobbied the European Commission in the summer of 2022 to avert a potential ban on Russian LNG. (Prokopiou's daughter, Ioanna, told Politico that she had simply asked a European Union lobbyist to help explain "EU importation rules." Representatives for Prokopiou did not respond to Forbes ’ request for comment.) When the EU announced a new sanctions package in December 2022, it included exceptions for LNG.

That meant that Prokopiou, who owns 42% of publicly traded LNG carrier firm Dynagas LNG Partners—a stake worth about $60 million—could keep shipping Russian gas to Europe. Two of its six ships are chartered to the Yamal LNG project in northern Russia, making up 43% of the company's revenues in 2023—up from 39% before the war. Much of that gas is exported to Europe.

Global LNG prices spiked to record highs in 2022 before steadying in 2023. That’s been a boon for Greek shippers: Marinakis owns 56% of publicly traded Capital Product Partners—a stake worth $500 million—which announced a $3.1 billion deal in November to order 11 new LNG carriers and jettison its fleet of container ships. A month later, he sold an 18% stake in the firm to an investment company controlled by Greek real estate and shipping billionaire Ioannis Papalekas for $160 million.

The good times won’t last forever. Eventually, the volatile tanker market will settle, putting an end to the boom that has launched so many Greek shippers into the billionaire ranks. Still, the amount of money they’ve plowed into buying new, more modern vessels—and the profits they’ve gotten from selling junk ships for top dollar and shipping Russian oil at a premium—means they’ll be in a stronger position for years to come.

As long as there’s money to be made—and the risks aren’t too high—Greek firms will likely keep selling their old tankers to shell companies tied to Russia, while making a tidy sum trading Russian oil. And when the boom ends, they’ll be ready to seize the next opportunity, armed with fleets of brand-new tankers worth billions of dollars.

"The Greek shipowners are very mercenary,” says Adi Imsirovic, a former oil trader and senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “When there's a lot of money involved, people will find a way."

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
