Wave hello as powerboats embark on race round the Island (where to watch)

Powerboats will take on a 60 mile course around the Isle of Wight, on Saturday, May 18, in the opening round of the 2024 UKOPRA Offshore Championship.

The Round the Island Offshore Powerboat race will see twenty teams, from across the UK and Sweden, competing for titles in classes 1, 1L, 2 and 3.

Ahead of the green flag, the fleet will travel to the East Lepe buoy, off Gurnard, at about 11.15am on Saturday, from Shamrock Quay in Southampton.

From 12.30pm, there will be a rolling start.

On the Isle of Wight, spot the powerboats from Yarmouth Pier, Fort Victoria, The Needles, St Catherine's Lighthouse and Ryde Pier

They will also be visible from Hurst Castle in Hampshire

Spectator boats are warned to stay north of an imaginary line between the East Lepe and West Lepe buoys.

UKOPRA Powerboat Championship comes to Shamrock Quay

The first round of the 2022 UKOPRA Championship powered by Shamrock Quay will be held on Sunday May 1st and the season opener will feature an offshore powerboat race around the Isle of Wight.

Thirty boats are expected to take on the challenge in a race that was won last year by Drew Langdon and Miles Jennings at an incredible average speed of 95.15 mph.

The boats will be based at our Shamrock Quay marina in Southampton where they will undergo technical inspection on the Saturday before Sunday’s race which starts at 11:30, south-east of East Lepe.

Recommended viewing areas include Yarmouth, Hurst Castle and The Needles.

The larger powered Class 1 boats will be expecting to see speeds in excess of 100 mph if the weather is fair. If conditions are rough, they will battle through the waves at half that speed.

Free viewing of the boats at Shamrock Quay is open to the public from midday on Saturday April 30th, so please do come down and take a look at these magnificent racing craft.

What is prw.

It’s a powerboat racing website that has covered circuit racing, offshore racing and PWC since 2016. Maintained by The Race Factory based in Norway who have specialists in event planning and promotion, social media, graphic design, and photography. We are currently working on our vision and believe that we can and will make a different in powerboating. We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.

There must be something about the date 02-02-2022 that inspires offshore racing series organisers to publish their calendars. So, having seen what’s happening across the pond in the sunshine state the British based United Kingdom Offshore Powerboat Racing Association published their World ‘Offshore’ Powerboat Championships for 2022.

Amongst those racers keen to see what’s happening was Miles Jennings who once again will be racing on both sides of the pond.

I’m looking forward to collecting a lot of Air Miles this year. I’m starting off the season by racing around the Isle of Wight, just off the south coast of England with Drew Langdon in Silverline Bullet at the opening round of the UKOPRA series. Then two weeks later I’m in Cocoa Beach, Florida with P1 Offshore and Zabo Racing.

Jennings went onto say.

We had a pre-season meeting with a lot of the UK racers earlier this week and I’m really excited to see that we are going to have the largest amount of UKOPRA Class 1 competitors ever seen. It’s going to look like the great days of UK offshore racing from back in the 1990’s.

Southampton to face Leeds in Championship final after beating West Brom

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — Southampton will face Leeds United for a spot in next year’s English Premier League after beating West Brom 3-1 in the second leg of their Championship playoff on Friday.

Southampton and Leeds will meet at Wembley on May 26 to decide who joins the already promoted Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the top flight.

The Saints progressed 3-1 on aggregate after a goalless first-leg at the Hawthorns last Sunday.

The celebrations were briefly marred when some of the 30,000 crowd invaded the pitch at the final whistle. Police rushed to keep the two sets of supporters separated and major trouble was avoided as players from both sides were quickly taken to the dressing rooms.

The final matchup is fitting given that Leeds finished third and Southampton fourth in the Championship. Leeds eliminated Norwich on Thursday to guarantee its place in the decider.

Watched by British Prime Minister and Saints fan Rishi Sunak, Southampton spent the first half on the attack and the visitor did well to soak up the pressure.

Four minutes into the second period came the breakthrough when Will Smallbone cracked a volley past Alex Palmer.

Prolific striker Adam Armstrong got his reward 12 minutes from time when he squeezed a low drive through the legs of a defender and into the far corner of the net. He got his second and Southampton’s third from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining to confirm the Saints superiority.

Cédric Kipré got a late consolation for West Brom.

“What a win,” Armstrong told Sky Sports. “We know West Brom are a good side over the two legs. We needed to put a marker down for the final and we’ve done that. We know what we are up against.

“The main thing now is Wembley. We will rest and recover, and maybe a few beers in between that.”

Southampton will be looking to bounce straight back into the Premier League, a year after being relegated for the first time since 2005.

Speedboat Experience Days: The Saber Thunderbolt truly is a master of the ocean; initially built for surf rescue in South Africa, this awesome catamaran can accelerate and change direction at astonishingly high speeds, and it's the UK's only speedboat experience where YOU drive!! Ideal as a gift for thrill-seekers, or an enjoyable and adrenaline-filled activity for friends, you are guaranteed to get your blood pumping with this unique and exhilarating experience.

After a safety briefing, where you will learn the essential skills necessary to control the boat, you'll change into the Saber Powersports racing team gear! An experienced instructor will then run through driving methods of the Thunderbolt and give you guidance on racing and cornering techniques.

Seize this fantastic opportunity to get behind the wheel yourself, wind the speed up and try some high-speed turns and wave jumping! You will never have been in a faster powerboat than this – you'll practically take off! Please note this experience is for 18+ only!

The Thunderbolt runs on weekends and Fridays between April and October.

Time Spent at Venue: 2:00

You will spend 1 hour on the water and approximately 2 hours on site, including a 30 minute safety briefing.

You will be able to have a go at driving the boat yourself with a fully qualified skipper by your side.

Spectators Allowed on Site: Yes

You will share your Thunderbolt powerboat experience in Southampton with one or two other guests, so each person will receive at least half an hour driving time.

Spectators are welcome to watch from the viewing area on the shore - including the Marina bar and the restaurant. There is free parking on site.

Activity Location

What to wear for this activity.

You should wear comfortable, casual clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting wet. It might also be a good idea to bring a change of clothes just in case you are planning on getting totally soaked! The centre will supply weather jackets. Goggles or sun glasses should be worn in the boats when sunny!

West Brom fans salute players who came to applaud amid Southampton play-off pitch invasion 'carnage'

A West Brom fan who watched his side fall to defeat in their Championship promotion play-off semifinal has described the "absolute carnage" that followed as opposition fans swarmed the pitch.

Hundreds of Southampton fans entered the St Mary's Stadium pitch following the home team's 3-1 win against West Bromwich Albion on Friday night.

The Saints dominated the second leg of the play-off clash, booking their spot in the finals thanks to second-half goals from Will Smallbone and Adam Armstrong.

Following the full-time whistle, hundreds of fans took to the pitch to celebrate their side's victory, some appearing to goad away supporters.

In footage shared with the Express & Star, Albion players and staff can be seen applauding the away end while surrounded by Southampton fans. Smoke from flares, both red and blue, can also be seen.
