Probably the best cruiser we have ever built

The ideal bluewater cruiser?

The Xc 47 marks the beginning of a completely new generation of XCruising. The concept is built on years of experience and a desire to accommodate the growing number of sailors looking for a true bluewater cruiser.

‘In short, Xc 47 is an elegant bluewater cruiser, built for safe and comfortable sailing on the oceans. Immense focus has been placed on the design to make shorthanded sailing safe and easy’, says Thomas Mielec, director of design & engineering at X-Yachts.

‘Many of our customers share a dream of heading off on a long cruise, often around the world. With this yacht, they will be ready and able to achieve this whenever the opportunity arises.

The ideal bluewater cruiser?

Shorthanded with ease and style

Most sailing today, even bluewater cruising, is performed with a small crew, with often just a couple of crew members, which the development team has kept in mind right from the outset of the design process. Some of the design features and functions have been seen before on other premium yachts, but on the Xc 47, they are executed with an unprecedented sense of style.

The cockpit layout has been designed to give the helmsman the capability of handling all lines. Four winches – two on each side, are positioned in front of the wheels. All relevant trim lines are led in channels under the deck from the mast to the steering position, with jammers reachable for the helmsman.

The traveller has been re-positioned from the cockpit to a position in front of the sprayhood. Apart from creating an efficient workspace, this cockpit arrangement leaves room for a comfortable living space, with the sail handling concentrated to the area at the helm station.

Near the transom, a large aft deck accommodates a comfortable full-width seating area behind the wheels, as well as a nice sunbathing area. As it should be on a true offshore yacht, the cockpit is deep, well protected, and with a closed transom.

Updated Xc design

The hull lines have maintained the deep V-shaped bow sections, generous rocker, and higher stern overhang from previous Xc models, providing the well-known comfortable seagoing characteristics. Furthermore, the aft of the Xc 47 has a modern, wider stern section, incorporating a subtle soft chine that provides extra form and stability, improved performance and more space in the aft cabins.

Updated Xc design

Carbon reinforced

The Xc 47 is built from a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, together with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fiber, a part of making the yacht stronger without adding excess weight.

The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines, is the shape of the superstructure. "We have introduced what we like to call a "semi deck saloon. This solution provides a better view of the surroundings, when under deck with more natural light, and an opportunity for multilevel floors." Says Thomas Mielec

To make sure the Xc 47 is capable of carrying provisions for long periods of time, the yacht has efficient storage volumes hidden behind the sturdy, yet elegantly crafted surfaces of the interior.

CEO Kræn Brinck Nielsen highlights, "Danish design and architecture are famous for clean and timeless style, and X-Yachts has always been a part of this tradition. X-Yacht owners often talk about a special X feeling, something that greets you every time you step on board. We know this feeling, and for us, it's a constant process to refine and enhance it each time. When looking at the Xc 47, l'm proud of how far we have come."

Interior

Cockpit features

The Xc 47 is designed with a safe, deep, closed cockpit with wide coamings with a great overview especially from the helming positions.

Steering wheels

The Steering wheels is increased from 90 cm to 100 cm in diameterand is in the same comfortable height as on the X5.6.

Dinghy & Davits

The transom door has an option of integrated davits with the new “easy launch” function.

Bowsprit design

Longer, wider and better integrated into the bow design. Option for integrated electric gennaker furler.

x boat yacht

Sail handling is controlled from the aft part of the cockpit. Haylards, reefing and control lines and sheets are led to the four standard self-tailing winches in front of the helming positions with the German mainsheet system operable from both sides.

Both the mainsheet and the genoa sheets are led through jammers, allowing you to easily free up a winch. The winches are arranged for optimal operation from the helming position when sailing shorthanded.

The low coaming aft of the wheels together with the foldable foot chocks ensure comfortable helming.

x boat yacht

Compared to the Xc 50, there is about 6 cm more space between the wheel and the aft cockpit locker, for better helming comfort.

x boat yacht

They have a capacity of 150 kg per davit and 200 kg in total. When the dinghy is hanging in the davits, there is a free view over it from the helming position, and when the dinghy is launched the davits can either lay on the bathing platform or be stored in the deep “step down” locker.

x boat yacht

Longer, wider and better integrated into the bow design. Option for integrated electric gennaker furler. Better launching of the anchor. Option for easily mountable bow ladder and hand rail for access over the bow.

X-Yachts X49 MkII first look: a good boat gets even better

  • Theo Stocker
  • March 5, 2024

The X-Yachts X49 was already an impressive boat - as you'd expect from the well-trusted brand, but the MKII takes things a step further

x boat yacht

Updating existing models is nothing new, but X-Yachts is currently working its way through its whole Pure X range, having already updated the X56, and the X43, the Mk II of which I sailed last years, and loved (YM, Aug 23). The X49 Mk II is following in the same vein as the other two models to have received the treatment.

As noted in that test, this is far more than slapping on some make-up for a cosmetic update. The structure of the hull and deck has been updated to make the boat lighter and stiffer, as well as lowering the boat’s centre of gravity. While the aft hull sections of the X43 were noticeably changed, the X49, being a later model, hasn’t needed such drastic alterations, although strucutral changes have still been made.

The boat has, however, received a new rudder that promises lower drag with more grip. At the front of the boat, the ‘S-bow’ moulding allows for a longer bowsprit with more space to fly either a Code Zero or a gennaker, with a larger slot between headsail and forestay. It also gives a bit more space for a longer bow-roller to keep the anchor clear of the topsides.

On deck, updates include a re-worked helm position, with larger, lifting footrests for the helmsman, and the coaming has been extended to keep your backside out of any water on deck when helming seated, as well as making the positiong slightly higher.

X-Yachts X43 review: fast passage making in comfort

You know the stars have aligned when you get Force 4-5 and bright sunshine, as well as a boat, crew,…

The position of the winches has been tweaked for easier sail handling – there is space to stand ahead of the wheels and handle the winches and clutches without needing to kneel on the side benches. The winches are both powered, and all lines are led aft under ducting in the coaming. The cockpit benches have also been made longer for more comfortable lounging.

Moving aft, the transom has been made more open and welcoming when you first step aboard from the stern, while the deck-height fold down transom has been retained to keep the sleek, open look.

Aesthetic touches include new pulpit and pushpit metalwork, as well as flush hatches and windows for a more minimalist look. These have also been increased in size to increase light below decks.

Other than that, there are a few tweaks to the styling below, as well as functional changes, such as better and easier access to stowage and making a few other features more user friendly and more durable.

It certainly looks like what was already a very good boat has been made even better with the inevitable refinements that can be made once a model has a few years of real-world sailing under its keel.

The 10 Best Explorer Yachts for High-Seas Adventures

A 350-foot gigayacht or 60-foot cruiser size isn't what defines an explorer yacht. the devil's in the details when it comes to authenticity., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Damen SeaXplorer Superyacht

Unlike fashion trends that seem to move as fast as a Redbull F1 car, the yachting industry takes its time adopting new ideas. There seems to be one exception. Explorer vessels, born out of the owners’ desires to go farther and stay longer, without sacrificing creature comforts, is developing with some urgency.

Several dozen builders and designers are now focusing on explorers, but they are also consulting with adventure travel firms that have a long history of using expedition yachts in remote parts of the globe. ICON Yachts, for example, collaborated with Cookson Adventures and the International Seakeepers Society on its Project Mission in both the overarching design and the details found across the yacht. Adventure outfitter EYOS employs its expertise routinely with Damen’s explorer vessels, most recently with the 190-foot Pink Shadow.   EYOS has a list of 50 features that separate authentic explorers from faux versions that might look the part but lack the necessary infrastructure and design elements.

Long-range cruising, system redundancy for autonomy at sea, and storage to carry specialist equipment like submersibles are some of the requirements that define expedition boats. There’s also deck configuration for the easy launch of tenders and toys, along with strong, ice-class hulls and climate-controlled areas comfort in extreme polar and tropic regions.

We culled through the latest fleet of explorers with multiple lengths and designs, selecting a single feature that we think makes it best in class. Here are 10 of our favorites.

Best Pilothouse: Doggersbank 77 Offshore

x boat yacht

More than 700 Doggersbank motoryachts have been built since the 1960s, with the latest model scheduled for delivery in 2025. The robust, offshore vessels are designed by Dutch studio Vripack for long ocean passages, assisted by a high, flared bow. “It prevents green water from hitting the wheelhouse windows in rough seas, and together with the Portuguese bridge, ensures the captain’s view is not obstructed,” Joost Mertens, Doggersbank fleet manager, told Robb Report . “The yacht’s steel hull ensures the yacht sits better in the water making it less vulnerable to wind and high waves.”

Best Deck Configuration: Columbus Crossover 42

x boat yacht

The Columbus Crossover 42 is defined by both straight and angled surfaces,  tapered stern sections and a concentration of volume in the bow that is becoming on many explorers. What is atypical is the yacht’s compact but flexible dimensions that accommodate a large cockpit tender and a 108-square-foot swimming pool with relaxation areas. Sold to an U.S. customer, it’s scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Best Multipurpose Stern: Bering B165

x boat yacht

Turkish boatbuilder Bering Yachts revealed details of its new 162-foot flagship explorer yacht, the B165 , at the Dubai International Boat Show in March. The yacht can carry 18,400 gallons of fuel, which the builder says will give it a 4,000 nautical mile range when cruising at 12 knots. It also has a 2,640-gallon holding tank. What singles the B165 out among other explorers, however, is its multi-purpose stern area for both function and form. The elongated aft deck has a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. When the bulwarks are folded down, the space becomes an even larger overwater terrace. When the pool is not in use, it can be used as a covered storage area for water toys and expedition equipment. The yacht’s two tenders are also stored on the aft, making it a flexible space for both equipment and guests.

Best Family-Friendly Concept: Project Mimer

x boat yacht

This 197-foot expedition concept by Tillberg Design of Sweden caters to family travel with a helicopter pad as well as multiple tenders and toys. It’s pitched by the studio as an introduction to true explorer yachting. It has a functional crew layout for efficient operations and an upper deck owner’s suite with a forward terrace and spa pool. With a hull that will be built to the Polar Code Category, the concept also has an optional helipad aft and long list of toys, from an electric luxury tender and two expedition RIBS to quad bikes, a submersible, Jet Skis, and, of course, an amphibious vehicle. The five-decked yacht sleeps 12 guests with crew quarters for 17 and an additional staff member, such as a nanny.

Best Ice Explorer: Damen SeaXplorer 105

x boat yacht

Damen’s 345-foot SeaXplorer 105 is the largest model in the SeaXplorer range, with exterior design by Azure Yacht Design. The platform was developed under the guidance of expedition specialists EYOS Expeditions, who considered over 150 design criteria, from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements. But it is EYOS’s expertise in the polar regions—it facilitated the first heli-ski charter in Antarctica and the first 3,200-foot sub dive to the Antarctic midnight zone—that gives the vessel its point of difference. The SeaXplorer has an ice-strengthened hull and a specially shaped icebreaking stern to maneuver through rough terrain.

Best Interior: Project Fox

x boat yacht

On top of having a cool name, Project Fox has a bright, contemporary interior, courtesy of London’s Q Design, that is becoming more common on expedition yachts. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is also one of the yacht’s standout features, with its marble en suite and hardwood floors. The salon is also luxe, with white walls that brighten up travel even in areas that are sunlight deprived. Project Fox also has four other staterooms.

Best Autonomy: Project Master

x boat yacht

ICON Yachts’s Project Master was a transoceanic offshore support vessel before the Dutch shipyard began a refit to turn it into an explorer yacht (see before and after inset). It’s equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion, a wide beam for multiple tender spaces, a 7,200-nautical mile range, and flexible cabin arrangements for expedition crew. Other features include a science lab and a certified heli-deck. “The yacht’s helicopter and sub capability mean it can offer assistance in areas with challenging access and little infrastructure,” Micca Ferrero, owner of ICON Yachts, told Robb Report . “The design is for the demands of self-sufficient voyages.”

Best Use of Volume: Arcadia Yachts A96

x boat yacht

The A96 mixes the lines, volume, and open-plan layout of Arcadia’s Sherpa series with the speed, joystick maneuverability, and quality of the yard’s A range. It’s the first Arcadia to have an Igor Lobanov-designed interior, as well as a high bow and high deckheads for traversing rough water. But its big differentiator is the 214 gross tonnes of volume and 24-foot beam that generate big volumes—4,300 square feet of usable space, which is 30 percent more than on other similar-sized yachts. Low bulwarks and lateral walkways emphasize the sense of openness.

Best Bow: Project Shackleton

x boat yacht

This 351-foot build from Lürssen has an inverted bow that looks like an eagle’s beak. The shape is designed to slice through waves with much lower vibration through the hull, while also reducing rock and roll in rough seas. Unlike the quasi-research vessel exteriors of many explorers, this vessel is representative of the changing look of many in this growing segment.

Best Multi-Mode Hull: Azimut Magellano 60

x boat yacht

The Magellano 60 isn’t technically an explorer yacht. Think of it as a cruiser  designed for some long-distance travel. But it does have one very interesting feature, what its builder Azimut calls a “dual-mode” hull. The semi-planing shape is designed to optimize fuel consumption (and therefore lower emissions) by about 20 percent (compared to similar-sized vessels) at low and medium speeds. The yacht’s bow is also designed to cut through waves for better seakeeping at a range of speeds. The boat cruises very efficiently at 18 knots but will hit a top end of 26, thus delivering the performance of a planing hull with the benefits of a displacement hull.

New Hanover County considers new ordinance targeting abandoned boats

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - New Hanover County’s Board of Commissioners voted Monday to advance an ordinance that would create criminal penalties for people who leave their vessels abandoned in county waterways. The ordinance would also give the Sheriff’s Office the authority to identify, notice, and remove abandoned boats.

The first reading of the ordinance passed 4-0. Commissioner Jonathan Barfield was absent from Monday’s meeting. The ordinance will have to pass again at next month’s meeting before it can be formally adopted.

The ordinance change could come after the North Carolina General Assembly passed a new law last year that makes it easier for local governments to control what happens to abandoned boats.

“This is something we had trouble with for years is abandoned vessels and that is something that endangers other boaters, it endangers wildlife, and the waterways,” said County Commissioner LeAnn Pierce. “And it’s something that is really important that we clean that up.”

Other local governments, like Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach, would have to pass their own ordinances that authorize the Sheriff’s Office to act to remove abandoned vessels. If the county’s version passes, it would only apply to unincorporated areas of the county.

“This is a problem that’s plagued us forever,” said Commissioner Rob Zapple. “But certainly got heightened after Hurricane Florence. And we’ve finally gotten to the point where we can do something really specific about it.”

The vote comes as several agencies, including the NC Coastal Federation, are working to remove a dozen abandoned boats from New Hanover County waterways this week.

“Sometimes vessels get tossed around in a storm. Other times people realize they are too expensive and they basically leave them out in the marsh to die, which is an unfortunate problem,” said NC Coastal Federation Marine Debris Program Director Ted Wilgis.

The boats are being towed to Holly Ridge where they are eventually scrapped.

“It will take about two weeks between getting the boats refloated or off the marsh, and then we take them to a yard where they can either be lifted out of the water and put on land or dragged out in the case here,” said Wilgis. “And then they will be basically demolished.”

Wilgis says the arrival of state and federal funding has enabled crews to remove the vessels before the busy tourism season.

“New Hanover County and the Cape Fear Region rely heavily on tourists,” said Wilgis. “If you have a lot of boats littering your shoreline, it’s not very attractive.”

According to the Coastal Federation, more than 300 abandoned boats have been removed from state waterways since 2021.

Further Education on Cellular Antennas Improving your Cellular Data Performance

Cellular antennas can be a vital part of your signal enhancing strategy to get a better signal, and thus better cellular data performance. They come in many shapes, sizes and varieties.

They can be used directly connected to your mobile hotspots or cellular embedded routers, or they might connect to your cellular booster. They come in omni-directional vs directional, single vs MIMO, and might support different frequency bands. They come in combination antennas with Wi-Fi and GPS.

But most importantly, is your installation options on your RV or boat.

So before choosing an antenna, be sure to understand all of these variables - and keep in mind that there likely isn't a single 'one size fits all' solution here. You may need to make compromises, or even have speciality antennas for challenging signal areas.

Labour would need a deal with the Taliban to make their migration ‘plan’ work

Their one idea is our idea, and it’s already up and running – they are taking the British people for fools

James Cleverly

The more Labour talk about how they would tackle immigration , the clearer it is that their pitch is a total sham. They can pretend, but it’s obvious they have no plan.

When Sir Keir Starmer set out his five “missions” last year, he showed how much he cared about the security of our borders by not mentioning it at all. Not a word.

Meanwhile, this Conservative Government has been relentlessly focused on stopping the boats , breaking the criminal smuggling gangs and expanding strong cooperation with international partners, especially France, and with Rwanda.

We are, right now, preparing to send a regular rhythm of migrant flights , having secured the legislation for that in the teeth of Labour opposition.

Now Labour have suddenly come up with one idea. Just one – a Small Boats Operational Command run by a former military chief to direct work across key intelligence and enforcement agencies to protect our borders.

The flaw in Labour making this their one idea is that it’s our idea, and it’s already up and running. Labour are really taking the British people for fools.

tmg.video.placeholder.alt 32ygZybEJuA

Despite clear evidence from political parties and 19 governments in Europe , who are asking for third-party safe destination country solutions similar to our Rwanda partnership, Labour vow to scrap it “even if it works”, and instead want some deal with the EU that would see us take even more migrants.

Despite the Irish government saying migrants had come to the Republic to avoid being sent to Rwanda, and recent examples across the media of migrants from different countries explaining they want to leave the UK or not try to come at all because they see our Rwanda plan become a reality, Labour are right now throwing away the only deterrent that is in play.

Despite it being clear to everyone but Labour that, without Rwanda, they have absolutely nowhere to send those from Afghanistan, Syria, Iran and anyone whose home country is unsafe, they’re determined to stop the flights , not the boats.

Despite the fact that, to solve that self-inflicted problem, they’d have to negotiate “returns agreements” with the Taliban, Assad and the ayatollahs, Labour dodge this question.

Despite the fact that, by scrapping Rwanda, Labour are embracing the costs of keeping people in the UK indefinitely – an overall bill that will rise to £11 billion a year unless you can remove people – Labour would still scrap it.

The only people secretly cheering Labour’s stance are the people smugglers , because Labour are saying that if you get here we have nowhere to return you to, and boasting they’ll remove the only thing that was making migrants think twice about putting their lives in the hands of violent criminals who don’t care if they die.

Which is an irony because, when you look at the whole range of things this Government is doing to tackle these criminal gangs, Labour chose to be left with one lonely idea to tackle immigration. It’s a good idea. It’s just not their idea, and it already exists.

Our Small Boats Operational Command is staffed by the very specialists Sir Keir boasts will fill his new unit. It’s run by a former major general, and it does exactly what he claims his new unit will do. He wants to convince people it is different. It really isn’t.

However, I will never ask those who keep us safe from terrorism, espionage and state threats to take their eyes off those vital jobs for a moment, and certainly not for a stump speech bullet point.

So why is their pitch so thin? Labour have always been squeamish about tackling immigration. They can’t make the difficult choices. They don’t like actions that might make them feel or look bad. They are more comfortable with a younger Sir Keir, who once branded any measures to tackle immigration “racist”.

Our plan is to stop the boats and to stop people, including children, drowning in the Channel. It is the right thing to do.

To do that, you need a deterrent – and we Conservatives have one. You need a destination to send people to. We delivered one. And yes, you need a team of specialists working to break the business model of the gangs. We Conservatives created it.

Labour can’t be trusted to tackle illegal migration, because they have no plan to do it.
