Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Part of a family/brand of catamaran designs, the first of which was the F1, introduced in 1975. It is said the concept is based on the designers dissatisfaction with a trend towards complexity and fragility in many high performance ‘off the beach’ catamarans at the time. In 1985, this evolved into the faster and wider 18ft dual-trapeze “Spitfire” model, still being built, and upon which the K1 is based. (The ‘Regatta’ version features a ‘flat top mainsail, and gennaker for offwind sailing). Recognized as an official ISAF racing class in 2005.

Chico Topcatsailing is child’s play! With the TOPCAT Chico, getting started in sailing is child’s play, and you will have tremendous fun sailing! On a Chico, up to three children can learn how to tack, jibe, and all the other manoeuvres the little sailors need to sail safely. After all, learning together is the most fun of all. The flat underwater hull ensures that the Chico is easy to manoeuvre, even in the tightest spaces. The boom as well as sharp corners and edges have been eliminated on purpose to minimize the risk of injury. Plus, you don’t have to be very fussy: with its polyethylene...

Technology The Topcat Formula TOPCAT sets the highest quality standards: sophisticated technology according to simple principles. The principle of interchangeable parts and a reliable supply of replacement parts in connection with the highest quality requirements and safety aspects result in the unique TOPCAT formula. The hull construction without centreboards, the patented rudder system (see p. 18), the mobility when assembling and disassembling, and refinements like the optional split mast, roller furling jib, or integrated righting line are proof of TOPCAT’s success, a success unlike...
Hull TOPCAT Streamcut Sail The TOPCAT hulls are manufactured in a shipyard in Italy using the time-consuming hand laminated technique. Multiple layers of polyester resin laminate, continuously developed and refined over decades, guarantee the highest manufacturing standards. The excellent sailing characteristics of the TOPCAT catamarans are an example for all other catamarans without daggerboards: a TOPCAT can be controlled safely, calmly, and predictably, even in critical situations. The long foreship in connection with the special deck shape reduces the risk of undercutting. In addition,...
Catamarans obtain the highest speeds – using only the force of the wind. When flying over the water on one hull, the TOPCAT reaches its absolute speed limit. To ensure that the focus is always on sailing fun, safety is already on board a TOPCAT. All TOPCAT models do without booms, daggerboards, and martingales. TOPCAT Rudder System To obtain the highest speed possible, the TOPCAT rudder blades can be lowered completely. When close to shore, the rudder blades are brought into beach position with only one pull; and the TOPCAT is still under your complete control. The patented protection...

The TOPCAT K1 is the flagship and at the same time the largest catamaran in the TOPCAT fleet. The 18-foot Cat is one of the fastest swordless catamarans in the world. It combines innovative design and superiority and follows the well thought-out TOPCAT concept. In 2014 the boat was completely redesigned and relaunched.
The Classic configuration often represents the entry into TOPCAT sailing: A classic fun, family and holiday catarman; despite its 18 feet, easy to control even by beginners. Sailing schools use the K1 Classic due to its large amount of space on the boat for teaching and rental. Options such as reinforced hulls with keel shoes, as well as the sepcial trampoline with ultra longlasting Tenara yard, have been specially developed for sailing schools and protect the material for different skill levels and wind conditions.

Hobie has comptip mast, Topcat is all aluminum mast. Both weight the same but the Topcat is little larger at 18ft, but the Getaway has a front tramp. Topcat has a furling spinnaker, Getaway had a spinnaker sock. I have never sailed a Topcat, but at a glance the Topcat K1 and the Getaway appear to be very different boats.
