Speed on the water at Sandy Hook for powerboat fun day

Bundaberg Powerboat Club's Fun Day a big success

Bundaberg Powerboats

The full force of the power behind the boats was felt at Sandy Hook today with Bundaberg Powerboat Club's Fun Day.

There wasn't a minute to spare between heats as race officials kept a watchful eye on the competition.

For one young competitor Montana Atkinson flew across the water in her powerboat Miss Conduct.

Montana, 11, is part of Jnr Team Acko Racing , and is the 2018 Australian champion and hopes her dedication will see her take the title again this year.

With parents Katrina and Brett Atkinson watching on, Montana's beaming smile said it all after her second heat for the day.

Montana started racing at eight and was crowned the J1 Australian Champion last year.

A title she hopes to back up again this year in the J2 class.

The Year 6 student said she doesn't get scared taking the turns and focuses on controlling her boat.

“I just have to back-off the accelerator to slow down as there are no brakes,” Montana said.

“If I take the corner too fast I just keep going.”

Katrina said powerboat racing was a great sport for the kids to be involved in, as there companionship on and off the water.

“The beauty of boat racing is the friendships formed,” Katrina said.

“They look after each other out there and it's about having a good time.”

Sandy Hook a great place to compete

Powerboat racing is in the family's blood, with Brett and Montana's older siblings Zac and Michaella, also part of the Acho JNR Racing team.

The family travelled from Coomera to compete at today's event.

Brett said he first raced at Bundaberg about 16 years ago.

“It's a great place here,” he said.

Montana said racing here was “pretty good”.

Bundaberg Powerboats impress at Sandy Hook

As the smell of two-stroke petrol and hot burgers filled the air at Sandy Hook the competition started to heat up.

Bundaberg Powerboat Club secretary Kathy Eglington said the day went very well.

The next club event will be the Rum City Powerboat Classic that will be held on 27 and 28 July.

Crowds also were drawn to the heritage car show on Saturday, read about it here .

Bundaberg powerboat comp revs up

AFTER damaging their boats at the Bundy Thunder, drivers are busy preparing for the final round of the Bundaberg Powerboat Club's Elgas Series.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Sport. Followed categories will be added to My News.

POWERBOAT RACING: After damaging their boats at the Bundy Thunder, drivers are busy preparing for the final round of the Bundaberg Powerboat Club’s Elgas Series.

For the first time since the annual racing spectacular in October, boats from across Australia will descend on Sandy Hook for a last chance at taking out the perpetual Elgas Shield.

Event publicity officer Annette Goodhew said it had been an anxious wait for some of the drivers whose boats were damaged at the Bundy Thunder.

“We’re expecting about 23 boats from across Australia,” Goodhew said.

“There’s one boat from Melbourne, some from Brisbane, Rockhampton and the Sunshine Coast.”

Sandy Hook has long been known as one of the premier venues for powerboat racing.

The event has been synonymous with the Bundy Thunder in recent years, but the annual Elgas Series should prove just as exciting.

Starting from 10am, unlimited inboards, restricted skiff/skis, 850cc, open outboards, hydroplanes and jet skis will race at Sandy Hook.

Goodhew was unable to release the final draw of the races.

“We don’t really find out until Saturday who will be racing,” he said.

The final results of the Elgas Series are also well guarded.

In the tradition of the series, no-one knows the points table until after the final race.

“We like to keep it a surprise to add to the intrigue,” Goodhew said.

Last year’s co-champions, Darren Urban and Laurie Kandusso, both withdrew from the competition this year because they sold their boats.

And the race for the new champion is as close as it has ever been, according to Goodhew.

“It is very close at the moment, no-one knows who will win,” she said.

“The drivers have been testing the water and trying new techniques.”

Entry in the event is free to the public.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Thunder on Cocoa Beach offshore powerboat races will return for its 15th year on Florida’s Space Coast, scheduled from May 16 to May 19 and includes four days and nights of parties and lots of racing action.

The Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix is one of the most popular attractions for the whole family in Central Florida and draws the top race teams in the World to compete in various classes with Class 1 reaching speeds over 175 mph.

In addition to soaking up the vibe of a Powerboat P1 race filled with excitement, action and speed, spectators can also take in the atmosphere of the East Coast’s surfing capital.

Due to its warm weather, steady waves and world-class surf shops, Cocoa Beach welcomes around 2.5 million visitors each year , making it a top tourist destination. Once the racing is over, The Cover will be a popular destination, with Fish Lips Waterfront Bar & Grill on everyone’s list.

Class 1 is the premier class of offshore powerboat racing in the world and is considered to be one of the most spectacular marine motorsports.

A Class 1 race boat has twin inboard 1100 horse power engines.  Each boat has a two-man crew: the driver and throttleman. They work closely with their pit crews to decide the race set-up: the type of propeller required for the conditions, gear ration settings, the amount of fuel needed and race tactics.

All-New VIP Experience

A great race day experience is available for the biggest race fans as 2024 will usher in an all-new VIP experience for Thunder on Cocoa Beach fans.

Thunder on Cocoa Beach race officials said this year it’s all about where to be on Saturday and Sunday for race days.

“We have completely upgraded our VIP experience to offer a better experience and to enhance how and where you watch the race. You have more options for seating, dining and drinking for two fantastic days of racing – we’ve even included an option to pre-pay for VIP parking at Lori Wilson Park.”

For 2024, the only location for beach chalets is at the start/finish line located at Lori Wilson Park; there will not be chalets on the turns. For viewing options this year, you can choose from a VIP chalet ticket, a two-person lounger with umbrella ticket or amp up your weekend in one of our private cabanas.

VIP CHALET: The Thunder on Cocoa Beach VIP Chalet is getting a makeover. It will feature a dining area and cozy VIP lounge spaces. Sit and watch the race on LIVE TV in total comfort under our large, shaded tent and enjoy a complimentary buffet and two drink tickets. A cash bar will also be available.

TWO-PERSON LOUNGER WITH UMBRELLA: The two-person lounger chair set up with umbrella gives you a dedicated spot to watch the race without having to lug your own chairs and umbrellas. Each setup accommodates two people and includes table service. These tickets include access to the VIP Chalet and all the perks that accompany the VIP Chalet ticket.

PRIVATE CABANA: Sit in the middle of the action in your own private cabana. The two-person private cabana comes with two canvas loungers, a cocktail table, UV cabana shade, dedicated food/drink server, towel service, two drink tokens and a plate of food for each person. Got friends? You can add two more people to your cabana for an upgrade charge. Cabanas also include access to the VIP Chalet and all the perks that come with it.

PARKING: Parking is not included in the price of your ticket, but it can be added to your experience. This year VIP parking passes will be sold ahead of race day and are only valid with a TOCB VIP ticket.

There is a new location for Thursday night’s High Octane Kick-off Party. You can join the race directors, racers and other fans to celebrate the upcoming weekend’s races in the parking lot behind Sandbar Sports Grill and Twisted Tides.

As always, the race boats will parade down A1A on Friday afternoon at around 4 p.m. headed to the Thunder on Cocoa Beach Block Party located in the streets of downtown Cocoa Beach.

Powerboat racing returns to Brevard County in Thunder on Cocoa Beach

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Powerboats sped along the Brevard County coast on Saturday, some pushing speeds of 200 miles per hour. The Thunder on Cocoa Beach fans said it was a heck of a show.

"It's pretty amazing!" said racing fan Amanda Campbell.

Sixty-seven teams are participating in this weekend's event. Powerboat races will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and again on Sunday. Kerry Bartlett founded the race 15 years ago. He said a 2021 study showed it had a $15 million economic impact on Brevard County.

"It's a community event – me and my four directors have full-time jobs. We do it for the love of the community and for the love of racing," he said.

The race started and ended at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach, which was set aside for ticketed guests. There were plenty of places to see the action; the seven-mile course stretched from State Road 520 to Minuteman Avenue. Kevin Pruett, a race director, said he expected plenty of fans to show up to watch.

"We'll probably be close to a hundred thousand, maybe a tad over. If this weather holds up, we'll be over a hundred thousand."

With feels-like temps close to 110 degrees, organizers have set up tents and misting stations for fans. There was also lots of water on hand. It was also wise to bring something to give some shade and wear sunblock.

"We've got lots of water, we've got our sunscreen, and we're ready for the day," said racing fan Melissa Degel.

Organizers also hope to raise around $20,000 for the group I Am a Freedom Fighter, a local nonprofit aiming to stop human trafficking.
