legend 37 sailboat

Warren Luhrs founded Hunter Marine Corporation in 1972. The company’s first offering was the Hunter 25, designed by Bob Seidelmann, a sailmaker and accomplished racing sailor. This was followed by a series of cruisers designed by John E. Cherubini, of Cherubini Yachts fame. As the company grew, an in-house team became responsible for all sailboat designs, including the Legend 37, which was built from 1986 to 1988. Today, Hunter boats are known for their Bergstrom & Ridder rigs, traveler arches, Euro styling, and low cost. The 37 is a design that falls somewhere in between.

The overall design of the Legend 37, with the flat sheer visually connecting the sharp, aggressive bow to the reverse transom, gives it the appearance of a high-performance boat. To offset generous freeboard, the coachroof is kept low and slopes forward, where it dissolves into the foredeck, somewhat after the style of the spartan deck design pioneered by Nautor’s Swan.

Like all Hunters, the 37 is a production boat built to a price point accessible to the company’s target market. Older models will have the expected maintenance issues that are common to boats of this era and cost.

Hunter built the Legend 37 with a solid-fiberglass hull, a balsa-cored deck, and molded interior liners that also incorporated structural components. A beefy transverse stiffener divides the main-saloon sole, and stringers run longitudinally on each side of the keel in the boat’s midsection.

The Legend 37’s interior is designed to comfortably accommodate a crew of four. In the forward cabin there’s a generous V-berth, a hanging locker, and a convenient vanity with sink. Immediately aft of it, and well forward of the boat’s midsection, is the main saloon, with its centerline drop-leaf table and near circular seating.

Aft, offering a combination of standing and stooping headroom, the spacious owner’s stateroom features a pedestal double berth and his-and-hers hanging locker/bureaus. It can be entered via the galley or the head.

Under the waterline, the Legend 37 has a balanced spade rudder and either a deep fin or a shoal-draft bulb/wing keel. Aloft, the fractional rig incorporates double swept-back airfoil spreaders and a split backstay. While the jib is small, the main is reasonably large and should be able to handle some heavy air without creating significant weather helm. The SA/D ratio of 18.6 suggests that the Legend 37 performs well in light air.

According to Ted Ambers, the owner of our review boat, the Legend 37’s best point of sail is a close reach; its worst, he says, is closehauled. For auxiliary power, the Legend 37 has a 34-horsepower Yanmar 3HM35F diesel. Coupled to a 16×10 two-bladed propeller, it easily moves the boat at hull speed. Delamination of the balsa-cored deck due to water saturation appears to be a common problem, but it can be detected by judicious sounding of the deck in conjunction with the use of a moisture meter.

The Legend 37 is a contemporary-styled performance sailer with a spacious interior that can make good on a family’s cruising ambitions. If you’re looking for one today, you can expect to find asking prices that range from $45,000 to approximately $65,000, depending on the boat’s condition.

Wiley Coyote

Wiley Coyote is a wonderfully comfortable and well-equipped vessel with tons of extras and lots of newer equipment.  It has been well maintained by a fastidious owner who is returning to Europe. This yacht is a great family boat with commodious accommodation and a sparkling performance under sail.  The unique feature of the Legend 37 is the huge walk-around double berth in the aft cabin.  This amount of interior volume is unbelievable for a sailboat with the desirable aft cockpit.

The overall design of the Legend 37, with the flat sheer visually connecting the sharp, aggressive bow to the reverse transom, gives it the appearance of a high-performance boat. To offset generous freeboard, the coach roof is kept low and slopes forward, where it dissolves into the foredeck, somewhat after the style of deck design pioneered by Nautor’s Swan.

This is a solid little ship.

The Legend 37’s interior is designed to very comfortably accommodate a crew of four. In the forward cabin there’s a generous V-berth, a hanging locker, and a convenient vanity with sink. Immediately aft of that, and well forward of the boat’s midsection, is the main saloon, with its center-line drop-leaf table and near circular seating.

Aft, offering some standing headroom, the spacious owner’s stateroom features a pedestal double berth and his-and-hers hanging locker/bureaus. It can be entered via the walk-through galley to port, or the walk-through head to starboard. On a vessel this size, it must be seen to be believed!

Under the waterline, the Legend 37 has a balanced spade rudder and a shoal-draft bulb/wing keel. Also, the fractional rig incorporates double swept-back airfoil spreaders and a split backstay. While the jib is small, the main is reasonably large and should be able to handle heavy air without creating significant weather helm. The SA/D ratio of 18.6 means that the Legend 37 performs well in light air, typical of summer weather in the Pacific Northwest.

The Hunter Legend 37 is both racer and cruiser in the truest sense of that sailing hybrid, capable of winning in club competition or providing luxury and comfort on a week-long cruise. Its racer profile will turn heads, while its below-decks accommodations are likely to encourage friends less interested in competition to stay aboard a bit longer. This boat is equally at home in both worlds and is a must-see for any serious sailor who also wants comfort.

Hunter Legend 37

A midsize racer-cruiser that is the best of both worlds

legend 37 sailboat

H unter Marine was launched in 1972 by Warren Luhrs, with many early cruising models designed by John Cherubini. By the 1990s, an inhouse team was responsible for most of the design work, which included the Bergstrom & Ridder rig with swept spreaders. The Hunter Legend 37 was launched just prior to the company's move to its trademark arch for the mainsheet traveler, with a production run from 1986 to 1988.

First impressions

The 37 doesn't look like a cruising boat despite its many amenities belowdecks. The sleek, uncluttered foredeck, reverse transom and a nearly 60-foot-tall mast combine to give this sloop a sleek profile. The cockpit with pedestal steering and large destroyer wheel is roomy enough for six.

Naval Architect and SAILING Magazine's Technical Editor Robert Perry noted in his review in 1986 that the 37 has the appearance of a high-performance boat, with a nod to Swan for introducing yachts with lowered coachroofs that seamlessly blend into the foredeck. Aboard the Hunter Legend 37, this attention to detail helps reduce the visual impact of its substantial freeboard.

Construction

Despite comments from traditionalists that boats of the mid-1980s resemble Clorox bottles in style and strength, the Hunter Legend 37 has proved an exception. It features a solid fiberglass hull, balsa-cored deck, Bergstrom & Ridder fractional rig with swept spreaders, balanced spade rudder and two keel options: a deep fin or a shoal-draft bulb with wings. Longitudinal stringers installed in the hull midsection to each side of the keel provide additional structural support. And although there isn't much teak or mahogany on deck, the interior is graced with a mix of exotic woods.

What to look for

With a balsa-cored deck, delamination from water infiltration is always a possibility. Check for stress cracks near stanchions, chainplates and other deck fittings. Make certain cabintop handrails are through-bolted because some owners have claimed the attachment was made with screws that pulled out. Problems with the Edson steering system have been reported, so inspect the chain-to-wire setup, the pulleys and quadrant. The aluminum fuel tank has been known to corrode.

Sailboats with style often sacrifice functionality, but here again the Hunter Legend 37 succeeds with a sculpted cockpit that provides room for six, albeit the space behind the helm is tight. Many owners have removed the arched bench behind the wheel.

With a 59-foot, fractional rig and swept spreaders, it's easy to see this boat could be a speedster in capable hands. The rig can carry a big main, its power kept under control in 25 knots of wind using only the backstay, cunningham and boom vang. The wide sidedecks are welcomed by sailors sent to work the foredeck.

Roomy and comfortable are the key words belowdecks. The U-shaped galley to port features a two-basin stainless steel sink, top-loading refrigerator, a two- or three-burner stove with oven, adequate storage, counter space and lots of small drawers. The saloon has a drop-leaf table and a circular seating pattern that encourages socializing, with settees to each side that can be used as single berths. Headroom is 6 feet 3 inches in the saloon and the boat carries 72 gallons of freshwater.

A navigator's station to starboard has a hinged desk drawer and various storage compartments. The aft berth, located beneath the cockpit, has a pedestal queen bed that can be reached from either side through the cabin door or the head. The arrangement eliminates having to disturb the other person, but the ceiling is low.

"It's like a real bed instead of having to climb over somebody," said David Alves, owner of the shoal-draft model Progeny in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

The forward V-berth cabin sleeps two, has a hanging locker and a vanity sink with mirror. Some owners have removed the sink to increase storage.

"The separate cabins are perfect for two couples," said Alves. "There's one shared head that also becomes a shower. The head can be accessed from the aft cabin and from the saloon. The plumbing is simple. You stick a hose on a fitting on the back of the door, then stand and shower."

The teak-and-holly sole gives the interior a warm glow while flush-mounted deck skylights allow natural light to enter the cabin.

The Hunter Legend 37 is equipped with a 34-horsepower Yanmar 3HM35F diesel fitted with a two-bladed propeller. The engine is fed by a 33-gallon aluminum fuel tank installed under the aft berth where access is easy. The sides of the engine can be accessed from twin side doors or the larger front opening, but servicing the top is a bit more difficult due to tight clearance. Owners report the freshwater-cooled engine is capable of pushing the boat along at 7 knots while cranking 2,800 rpm on the tachometer. Although some pre-owned Legend 37s are advertised with 27-horsepower or 35-horsepower engines, most are factory-fitted with the 34-horsepower Yanmar.

Fast is the most frequently heard word from the mouths of owners when describing the boat's sailing characteristics. It seems generally agreed that the boat performs remarkably in light air, perhaps due to the high sail area-to-displacement ratio.

"The boat has a huge main and that's where the power is," Alves said. "I use a 110% jib on an above-deck Harken furler that was installed by the previous owner. The original furler was flush with the deck. Changing over freed up the anchor locker."

Alves said the boat sails well up wind even though it's a wing keel with bulb, which seemingly would lack the upwind performance of a deep fin keel and be subject to more vibration as it moves through the water.

Steve Royall, who sails his Legend 37 Gone Tomorrow out of Marina del Rey, California, said the boat is fast in light air and when reefed correctly performs admirably in heavy wind.

"When we have Wednesday night races, I chase people down just to show them I can," he said. "It's a fast boat. And it really points."

Royall recommends a 155% genoa in light air and a 135% when bigger breezes are forecast.

"It sails like a dream. I can get 8.5 knots out of it, which is faster than hull speed," he said.

The Hunter Legend 37 is both racer and cruiser in the truest sense of that sailing hybrid, capable of winning in club competition or providing luxury and comfort on a weeklong cruise. Its racer profile will turn heads while its belowdecks accommodations are likely to encourage friends less interested in competition to stay aboard a bit longer. This boat is equally at home in both worlds.

1996 Hunter Legend 37.5

Hunter's 37.5 is one of the most comfortable and well rounded designs in the Hunter line of coastal cruising yachts. Every aspect of the yacht is efficiently designed to maximize space, comfort, storage and functionality.

Her shoal draft bulb-wing keel has a draft of only 4'11".  Her generous sail plan is easy to handle and provides quick and spirited acceleration in all wind conditions. A Dutchman mainsail flaking system makes the job of stowing the main as simple as releasing the halyard.  Hunter designed these boats to be easy to maintain, comfortable, capable and fun to sail.  It is no wonder these were such popular designs, Hunter hit their target with the Legend 37.5,

Entering the cabin via the main companionway, there's a teak ladder leading down over the engine box. Atop the engine there is a storage compartment for winch handles and other gear within easy reach of the cockpit. A large L-shaped galley with corian countertops is to port, and a massive walk through head with separate shower. is immediately to starboard.   The nav station is located just forward of the head.   Forward of the galley and nav station is the main salon with an adjustable drop leaf table and seating for seven.  Moving forward is a private guest stateroom with v-berth, abundant storage and louvered pass through.

The interior is teak and teak veneer over marine plywood. The cabin sole is teak and holly.  There is easy access to all bilge areas through lift-up teak floorboard.  All interior wood is in great condition with no signs of water intrusion.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Not able to find either the 3H or the XXXX listing in an article published by Torrensen Marine. They have either changed their name or closed down after many years. What's the year of the boat ?

I think I found data on the engine. I think it is original to the boat, but has a high output alternator. Basically I was trying to find a method for changing the raw water impeller without removing the starter.3JH32C

Can you take a picture of the engine id plate located on top ? Is it a 3jh2 ?

Yes it is. The reason for asking was to find out if there was a secret to removing the impeller without removing the starter. I don’t have the tool shown in the vid above.

I just remove the engine mount bracket and water pump on my 3jh3 when I need to replace the impeller. Off, replace, install all done in under an hour. No need to change the engine mount height.

Thanks to all that responded! With your assistance and knowledge gleaned from the internet I think we will have it well in hand. Again many thanks! Weasel

First Alert Weather Sunday

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Sunday is still a First Alert Weather Day because of another “cold front” dropping south across Florida. Scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms will be possible. Any storm that does develop could bring lightning and gusty winds and that’s the main threat for Sunday. We do have drier air returning next week with dew points in the upper 60s for a less-humid feel during the work week , and rain chance go way down for the rest of May.

So far SRQ only reported 0.02″ for May, so far. Our drought status is climbing back to Moderate, so we need the rain.

  7. Perry Design Review: Hunter Legend 37

The sail area to displacement ratio is high at 19.76 and that should be more than sufficient to give this design good speed in light air. You could very easily get by with a small jib, say a 110 percent and a 150 percent genoa, for your whole inventory. The Hunter 37 is available with a deep fin keel in addition to the bulb-wing.
