There is no place more spectacular in Alaska then the Inside Passage, one of the two remaining temperate rainforests left in this world. While sailing these enchanting waters you will experience the best of Alaska. Whether you are interested in whale watching, observing bears, birding, fishing, glacier viewing, hiking or kayaking, there is no better place than the Inside Passage. GYPSY WIND offers custom trips based on your interests. If your pleasure is photographing bears feeding, seeing breaching whales, kayaking through icebergs, hooking a big fish, or a mix of visiting small towns and exploring the wild the crew can accommodate your every need and look forward to sharing this adventure with you.

Join the crew of Sailing Yacht Gypsy Wind. The sailboat is completely equipped for your safety and comfort. Gypsy Wind is a Irwin 72’ sailboat equipped with 1 queen and 2 double staterooms with in-suite bathrooms, a large comfortable main salon, and a spacious cockpit and a jacuzzi to relax and see all the breathtaking sights Alaska has to offer. The crew includes a USCG Captain, with a 500 Ton Master Captains license, and a professional culinary trained chef who can cook to your heart’s desires.

Sailing Yacht Gypsy Wind operates in the breathtaking waters of southeast Alaska, departing out of their home port of Juneau. The city is served daily by Alaska Airlines jet services.

Most of their sailing area in Alaska is the 20 million acres of the Tonga’s National Forest and small towns in southeast Alaska. In this remote area you’ll spend most evenings anchored in quiet inlets. The Inside Passage is protected from swells from the oceans outer coast and is filled with jaw-dropping bays, beaches, mountains and forest.

The crew on sailing yacht Gypsy Wind love sailing and will put up the sails whenever the wind will allow. They look forward to having people with all levels of sailing experience on their boat and are happy to have guests help sail Gypsy Wind or just sit back and take in the sights. No sailing experience is necessary to join in the adventure.

Sailing yacht Gypsy Wind’s schedule will be custom-designed to your interests in Alaska to maximize your experience. There are many itineraries along each route as well as hundreds of different anchorages along the way. You could sail in Alaska for years and never anchor in the same place twice.

How's the Fishing?

Two words...world class.

In May, during my first week of shore fishing on the island, I reeled in my largest snook, followed by a monstrous redfish the next day, and then over 30 trout the day after. A few days later, I achieved an inshore slam in just four casts. Fishing conditions may vary, but if you're passionate about fishing, this place is extraordinary. It's rare to stay in a 5-star accommodation and be just 30 steps away from landing a 40+ snook, a 200lb tarpon, or catching a few sheepshead for fish tacos.

For those aiming for personal bests, we recommend hiring a charter captain. The pictures below showcase just a few of the impressive catches made by us, our friends, and guests.

blackfin tuna

Guest boated their fish of a lifetime

This huge Red Snapper

This family brought their own boat and knew what they were doing as they landed this massive ARS

Little Tunny

Up North we call them False Albacore and they are one of the hardest fighting fish around. In FL they have a different name but same screaming runs

African Pompano

This bloody mess was the guest of honor at a massive fish dinner for friends. The best tasting fish if you know how to catch them

Permit

Our guest went out with a guide to hook this HUGE Permit on one of the nearshore wrecks

PB Snook

Our guests spent 2 days fishing w Capt Jason and boated PBs in Snook and Redfish just a short boat ride from the home

Tripletail

This dinosaur of a fish is a favorite for chefs as its meat is delicate and tender. When the crab pots go in the Tripletail gather around the pots looking for a fresh shrimp

Redfish

During the fall bull reds make their way into Pine Island sound and can be caught on everything from a chunk of ladyfish to a delicately placed fly pattern

Seatrout

Insane top water trout action on one of the many big grass flats

Redfish

This red was landed on a live bait under a floating cork

Snook

This big female inhaled a small white bait near a boat dock

Jack Crevale

Had a few mins to kill so our friend who never caught a fish took a cast and 10mins later brought this aggressive jack to the boat

First grouper of many

The first day we fished on the island, this was the first little grouper. Spring time the inlets are packed with these little buggers

Small Grouper

The area is loaded with small grouper and snapper. Bounce that Slam Shady off the bottom and whamo!

Jim's Gypsy Wind Shore Guide to fishing North Captiva

If you want to fish from the shore of North Cap you just might experience some of the best fishing of your life. That’s a bold statement, right?

But as someone who has fished all over the US and the Caribbean I can honestly say, without any hyperbole, May 2021 was the best fishing month of my life and that’s without ever leaving the island. Now, just to level set, everything depends on water clarity, tides, wind, and bait. May had perfect conditions and the fishing gods aligned.

Things will change throughout the year so as we learn more we will keep updating this page with new information from guests and our own time fishing on North Captiva. Let’s give you your first local fishing tip...local guides just call it North Cap.

Here are some tips and information based on my personal experience. We also created a Gypsy Wind fishing map , please add your own pins and pics of some of your favorite spots.

MY BEST OUTFIT- Light spinning rod. My favorite combo is a Bull Bay  Bolt 7'6" medium with fast action. I pair it with a 2500 or 3000 series Shimano or Daiwa...

HOW IT WORKS

Submit captain form.

To rent as a "bareboat captain," we require you to provide details about your boating experience. This information helps us determine whether you are qualified to use the boat in and around the waters of North Captiva Island. The PRIMARY CAPTAIN of the vessel should fill out this form. Any damage or liability resulting in the operation of the vessel is the responsibility of the PRIMARY CAPTAIN.

BUOY INSURANCE

BUOY is a new Peer to Peer boat insurance. GYBR uses BUOY to allow our renters to have a policy while renting the DORADO 23. Floria law requires that renters have access to an insurance policy. We chose BUOY because they only charge renters for the time they spend on the water. The single highest cost in the boat rental market is insurance. With BUOY you can manage the cost similar to the gas you burn.

SELECT PACKAGE

Once the Primary Captain has been approved, select any additional gear or equipment you would like to use during your rental period. When you pick up the boat, our Managing Captain Kale will walk you through all vessel operations and show you where all emergency equipment is housed on the boat. Your fishing or adventure gear will be either on the boat or be available at the house on North Cap.

Terms & Conditions for Dorado 23 Rental

To operate a boat under Gypsy Wind Boat Rental and BUOY Peer-to-Peer Boat rental insurance, you must fulfill the following criteria (in addition to meeting GWBR Captaining requirements):

Be at least 25 years of age  and comply with Florida  law that requires anyone who was born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, to successfully complete an approved boating safety course and obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card issued by the FWC or for a non-resident who has in his or her possession proof that he or she has completed a NASBLA-approved boater safety course or equivalency examination from another state.

Possess a passport or valid United States-issued driver's license.

No criminal convictions on your record in the last ten years.

No major driving violations on your record in the last three years.

No boat insurance claim in the past three years.

FLORIDA BOATING LAWS

It violates Florida law to operate a vessel while impaired by alcohol or other drugs. A vessel operator suspected of boating under the influence must submit to sobriety tests and a physical or chemical test to determine blood- or breath-alcohol content. In Florida, a vessel operator is presumed to be under the influence if their blood- or breath-alcohol level is at or above .08.

Effective April 1, 2021, operators of certain vessels under 26 feet long MUST use either a helm or outboard lanyard or wireless ECOS when traveling on plane or above displacement speed.

PRICE BREAKDOW N AND FEES

The items below contribute to the total cost of the booking.

This is the package price the owner sets for a booking.

Captain fee

All bookings with a captain are negotiated and paid directly with the captain, including any agreed-upon fees or gratuity.

Cleaning Service fee

A cleaning service fee is charged on each rental. This ensures that every boater has a clean boat upon their arrival. If excessive cleaning (full boat detail) is required due to the condition of the boat upon its return, a fee of $750 will be deducted from the security deposit to cover the boat detailing. Hoses and cleaning supplies are available on all rentals. Renters are encouraged to maintain the boat's condition after each daily use, especially if blood, bait, or other materials, such as food or beverages, are on the flooring or cushions.

BUOY Renter insurance fee

It is mandatory to rent the Dorado 23 that the renter has BUOY insurance for the duration of their time on the water. Should the renter use the boat without any BUOY coverage in effect, the guests will lose $500 of their security deposit. If the renter fails to have coverage for more than one trip, they will lose the entirety of their security deposit or will be charged $1,500.00 should any additional fees already apply.

Florida requires GWBR to collect 6.5% sales tax for boat rentals. This fee is charged on the boat fee and any additional gear package charges.

Security deposit

A security deposit is held on the renter’s card to cover incidental damage, charges, and/or lost items. The hold is placed on the card 48 hours before the rental and is released 48 hours following the conclusion of the rental if no damage claim has been filed. It may take 10+ business days for your statement to reflect the release of the deposit.

Refueling fee

Upon checkout, the boat will be refueled, and the total cost of $6/gallon ($6/gal = Current cost/gallon + refueling fee) will be charged for the fuel used. The boat's fuel gauges are NOT used to measure the actual fuel consumed; they are an estimate to provide a captain with a cruising range for the boat. The actual fuel used may differ significantly from the gauge's estimated value in some cases.

The renter's card will be billed for the fuel used, and a picture of the receipt plus the refueling fee will be sent via email. If the renter is present during refueling, they may pay for fuel  directly at the pump.

Gear Package fee

An additional rate will be charged based on the gear selected, and specific packages may require an additional security deposit hold. GWBR will inform all renters at the time of their booking about any and all additional fees and security deposit requirements.

Meet Michigan’s 10 invasive insects: What they are, the damage they cause and what to do about them

Invasive insects threaten trees, plants across michigan.

Kayla Clarke , Senior Web Producer

Michigan has 10 insects on its invasive species list.

Many of these insects threaten trees and plants across the state.

If you believe you have found one of these invasive insects, you can report it through the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network. Just click here and search for the insect.

Spotted Lanternfly

If you see one, catch it and kill it.

Each spotted lanternfly can lay an egg mass containing around 30-50 eggs. If you see an egg mass, squish it.

These insects feed on more than 70 different plants including grapes, apples, hops and hardwood trees. It sucks sap from host plants while secreting large amounts of sugar-rich, sticky liquid called honeydew.

The honeydew and resulting black sooty mold can kill plants and foul surfaces. The honeydew attracts pests like yellow jackets, flies and ants.

There are some people online who are using water bottles or other plastic cups to capture the spotted lanternfly when they’re on trees. You simply put the mouth of the bottle around it and the lanternfly will fly into the bottle.

If you find any spotted lanternfly, report them to te DNR at www2.dnr.state.mi.us/ors/Survey/38 .

Japanese beetle

The Japanese beetle is widespread throughout Michigan.

Adult beetles are about 3/8 inch in length and have a bright, metallic green head and body and metallic brown wings. Its legs are a darker green. There are twelve tufts of white hairs surrounding the edges of the abdomen.

Grubs or larvae are about 1/16th to 1/4 inch in length, white and have three pairs of legs. Adult beetles emerge in June or July and feed throughout the summer.

The grubs live underground and feed on grass roots. They leave brown patches in lawns. The adults feed on foliage, flowers and fruit including tree fruits, small fruits, ornamentals, garden vegetables, soybeans and corn.

Spongy moth

Spongy moth caterpillars emerge from tan, fuzzy egg masses in April and feed on leaves through late June.

The caterpillars are hairy and have a yellow and black head, five pairs of blue spots followed by six pairs of red spots. Mature caterpillars are 1.5 to 2 inches in length.

If you find leaf debris and small, round frass under trees that’s an indication of a spongy moth infestation.

Male moths’ wings have a wavy pattern of brown to dark-brown and span 1.5 inches. Female moths are larger than males and do not fly. The females have white to cream color wings with wavy black markings.

The caterpillars are of concern because they can defoliate trees, leaving them vulnerable to diseases and other pests which can kill trees. Caterpillars can be blown by the wind to other trees.

Emerald ash borer

The emerald ash borer is known to be established in Michigan’s lower peninsula and has been detected in Michigan’s upper peninsula.

They have a bright, metallic green body with purple abdominal segments under its wing covers. It’s about 1/2 inch long as an adult. It can fit on the head of a penny. The larvae are worm-like. They create a d-shaped exit hole in trees.

Adults feed on the foliage of ash trees while the larvae tunnel and feed on the underside of the park, which cuts off the transportation of nutrients and water to the tree.

They were first discovered in Michigan in 2002 and has killed tens of millions of ash trees in Michigan. It has killed trees in forests and neighborhoods.

Adults typically only fly 1/2 mile, but they can be transported through infested firewood to non-infested areas.

Brown marmorated stink bug

The brown marmorated stink bug is established in Michigan.

It’s a 0.5-0.625-inch shield-shaped insect that uses its piercing mouthparts to suck plant juices from fruits, seed pods and nuts on many plants.

It was accidentally brought to North America from Asia in 1996. It was first detected in Michigan in 2010 and is now a major pest for farmers.

Stink bugs have been since been found in all Michigan counties but is well established in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula.

The good news is stink bugs will not cause structural damage or reproduce in homes. They also do not bite people or pets.

They are not known to transmit disease or cause physical harm but they have their name for a reason -- they produce a pungent chemical that -- well, it stinks.

Read more: Let’s talk about Michigan stink bugs: Why are they here? What should you do about it?

Asian Longhorned Beetle

It’s an invasive wood-boring beetle that attacks 12 types of hardwood trees, including maples, elms, horse chestnuts, birches and willows. It doesn’t have any predators or diseases to keep the population down.

When it’s in its larval stage, it feeds inside tree trunks and branches during the colder months. It creates tunnels as it feeds and then chews its way out as an adult in the warmer months.

Trees that have been invested will not survive.

Although the beetle has not yet been discovered in Michigan, officials say it’s “crucial we keep an eye out for it.” Discovering early signs of infestation can prevent widespread damage to the state’s forest resources, urban landscapes and maple syrup production.

Look for the following signs when you’re outside:

  • Round exit holes, about the diameter of a pencil, found in tree trunks and branches.
  • Shallow oval or round scars in the bark, where the adult beetle chewed an egg site.
  • Material that looks like wood shavings lying on the ground around the tree or in the branches.
  • Dead branches or limbs falling from an otherwise healthy-looking tree.

Adult Asian longhorned beetles are large and range from 3/4 to 1 1/2 inches in length. That doesn’t include their long antennae. They are shiny black and have random white blotches, or spots.

Read more: Start checking trees for signs of Asian longhorned beetles: What they are, why they’re a threat

Balsam woolly adelgid

Balsam woolly adelgid has been detected in Michigan.

It infests true fir trees, including balsam, fraser and concolor (white) fir in forests and landscapes in Michigan.

It’s a sap-feeding insect and its repeated attacks can weaken trees, cause twig gouting and causes trees to die over the course of several years.

Michigan officials say to watch out for the following signs:

  • Tiny one-to-two-millimeter white woolly tufts on the lower trunk of the tree and possibly on large branches in the spring and summer.
  • Swelling and distortion of the twigs, commonly called “gout”.
  • Flagging - a branch or branches that turn brick-red.
  • Tree crowns that become narrow and misshapen with few needles.

Read: Invasive insect that attacks true fir trees found in Missaukee County

Hemlock woolly adelgid

Hemlock woolly adelgid has been detected in Michigan.

It infests eastern hemlock trees and has been found in Michigan in forests and landscape settings. Eastern hemlock is found naturally in moist forest environments and along streams and water bodies.

The hemlock woolly adelgid sucks sap from the hemlock needles, killing needles, shoots and branches. Infested hemlocks become less vigorous and may turn grayish-green. If it’s untreated, it can kill a tree within four to 10 years.

Michigan says to watch out for the following signs:

  • Small, round, white, cottony masses, 1/16″ to 1/4″.
  • Found on the twig at the base of the needles on the underside of hemlock tree branches.
  • Present year-round but most visible November through July.
  • Note that hemlock woolly adelgid infests eastern hemlock trees, not pines or spruces.

Read: Time to check Christmas trees for hemlock woolly adelgid

Mountain pine beetle

The mountain pine beetle is on Michigan’s invasive species watch list, but has not been detected in the state.

This bark beetle is described as aggressive and destructive. It can infest most species of pine tree. The beetles and their larvae tunnel through inner bark and eventually will kill the tree.

This beetle is hard to identify. Michigan suggests looking for these signs:

  • Popcorn-like globs of brown, pink or white pitch on the tree’s trunk.
  • Red frass, resembling fine sawdust, on bark crevices or at the tree’s base.
  • Yellow to red needles in the tree’s crown in the summer.
  • Evidence of woodpecker feeding, such as missing patches of bark.
  • Galleries under the tree’s bark.

If you find signs of this beetle, you should note the location and take photos. Report any findings to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at [email protected] , or use the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network’s online reporting tool .

Box tree moth

The box tree moth has been detected in Michigan.

They are a concern because their caterpillars feed mostly on boxwood, and heavy infestations can defoliate host plants. Once the leaves are gone, the larvae consume the bark. This will kill the plant.

The box tree moth has no natural predators in Michigan, which means they can grow large populations that are only limited by food sources.

The box tree moth can move around 5 miles per year, which means when it’s found out of its native range it got their through importation and sale of boxwood and box tree nursery stock.

As of Dec. 11, 2023, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has expanded the interior quarantine for invasive box tree moth. The entire counties of Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne.

In the quarantine, the whole plant, plant parts, and nursery stock of the genus Buxus, including living and dead plant material, can not be moved outside of the quarantined area.

Wreaths, boughs, and grave blankets from Buxus are not quarantined if moved from October 15 through Jan. 1.

Signs of box tree moths include the following:

  • On boxwood and box tree species (Buxus spp.) - green and yellow caterpillars with white, yellow, and black stripes and black spots.
  • Loose webbing in the area of caterpillar activity.
  • Evidence of feeding on edges of boxwood or box tree leaves or skeletonization of leaves.
  • White moths with a brown border and distinctive white comma-shaped mark on each forewing.
  • Less frequently - moths that are entirely brown except for the white mark on each forewing.
  • Clusters of 5-20 pale yellow eggs on the leaves of boxwood or box trees.

If you see signs of box tree moth of its caterpillars you should take photos and submit a report through Michigan’s Eyes in the Field online reporting system .
