Benetti Launches Six-deck 70-meter Long FB273 Custom Superyacht
The Benetti shipyard in Livorno has launched FB273, an elegant, six-deck 70-meter custom yacht with a steel hull and innovative swimming pool surrounded by an aluminium superstructure.
The exterior design of FB273 was developed entirely by Benetti, working in close collaboration with the owner, while the interiors are by Laura Pomponi and her Team.
The yacht extends across six decks and has a futuristic stern area featuring two side doors and a variable geometry swimming pool, a vertical bow with a “touch and go” helicopter landing area and a Jacuzzi on the Sky Deck.
Yesterday, Benetti, in a festive atmosphere at its Livorno shipyard, launched the 70-meter superyacht FB273, a symbol of the excellence on which Benetti has always prided itself. Built for an expert owner, the yacht has a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, six decks and a highly distinctive design that enhances both functionality and performance.
The elegant lines of the exteriors are the work of Benetti’s in-house designers, while the interiors are the work of Laura Pomponi and her design team. Construction work was supervised on behalf of the Owner by Bureau Veritas Solutions M&O.
Perhaps the most striking of the many unusual features of this superyacht is the stern area, which has a variable geometry swimming pool with a special system that varies the depth for use by both adults and kids, installed on a Benetti yacht for the very first time.
The bottom of the pool becomes an integral part of the Main Deck when fully raised, and the Beach Club opens out with two side terraces over the water.
The indoor and outdoor spaces on the Main Deck are very generously spaced and feature big sunbathing areas.
Moving forward from the stern, a light-filled living area with full-height glazed surfaces, furnished with sofas and armchairs, is followed by a dining room with a balcony on the starboard side that amplifies the sensation of contact with the sea and eliminates the boundary between interior and exterior.
On the Lower Deck, guests are accommodated amidships in 6 double cabins. The crew quarters are in the bow area.
The Upper Deck is dedicated entirely to the owner, with access both from outdoors and up the impressive interior stairway. In the bow, the private cabin occupies over 120 sqm and has a 180-degree view of the horizon, offering a bathroom with shower and sauna, a walk-in his and her wardrobe, and a big, bright night area where the vanity table and breakfast corner flank the bed.
There is also a private lounge with loose furniture that looks out over the yacht’s majestic bow, reserved for the owner’s exclusive use, and a touch-and-go helicopter landing area at the tip of the bow.
On the same deck as the owner’s suite, moving forward from the stern, is an outdoor lounge area with sofas and a sunbathing area, the interior lounge area, and a living space with a home theatre system.
The office has a big monolithic glass wall that looks out over the interiors and is connected to the big lobby with a private balcony. On the left side is the gym, complete with a massage room.
The Sun Deck features a big en Plein air dining area connected to an interior veranda through a sliding door. Forward, the captain’s cabin is next to the bridge.
The top Sky Deck is completely open, with a Jacuzzi, sun pad and loungers offering a prime vantage point to enjoy the sea view.
FB273 is fitted with two 2,400 hp Caterpillar engines that drive the yacht to a top speed of 17 knots and give it a range of 5,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots.

70 foot yacht guide: finding your perfect yacht.
- June 18, 2019
The 70 foot yacht range often represents a demarcation in yachting. Vessels below this size range are often owner-operated whereas once yacht owners get into the 70 foot range, owners typically do not operate the yacht themselves. The 70 foot yacht is also just shy of what most consider to be the superyacht category. For instance, Boat International tracks superyacht sales and production data of yachts worldwide that are at least 24 meters in length (78-79 feet).
As the yacht size increases, the complexity of the purchase can also increase. While we often still begin with general use case questions such as what the yacht will be used for, how many guests should it accommodate and where do you plan to travel with the yacht, there are other important elements to consider when purchasing a 70 foot yacht. Considerations such as build quality, yacht type, cruising speed, propulsion options and more are all important elements to thoroughly examine.
Understanding the various yacht types is key to matching the right 70 foot yacht to your needs. Express yachts (can be referred to as express cruisers or sport cruisers) typically refer to yachts with a single deck above the hull and a living space below deck. These yachts often catch the eyes of onlookers as they are sleek and sporty.
Express yachts can be further grouped by looking at the hard top or enclosure. Typically the hard top express yacht either offers a semi-enclosure or full-enclosure for the operator. An open express yacht is different, however, in that it has maximum space for sun with little to no shade on deck. The open express can sometimes be referred to as a “Mediterranean” style yacht.
The flybridge or sedan bridge yacht refers to a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck. This additional level can include seating and control station. Often times since the flybridge above is present, the main deck will have an enclosed space. The flybridge itself can be open air or enclosed.
Interior Layout
When yachts get into the 70 foot range, the interior layout can include a wide variety of options to suit your particular yachting lifestyle. Yachts in this range often have a spacious main deck salon with excellent seating, dining and entertaining spaces. Down below, the yachts will often have four or more cabins plus crew quarters. Newer yachts feature impressive full beam master bedrooms that come with remarkable spaciousness and the latest amenities. Quite often, a flybridge includes additional seating and control station.
Finishes and interior designs can vary widely depending on the model and age of the yacht. Commissioning a new yacht build of course means that owners can provide input and select particular finishes and features to meet their needs and tastes.
Considerations When Buying A 70 Foot Yacht
If you’re relatively new to yachting, it can be good to get some experience. Taking time to charter a yacht in various destinations can help you narrow down what yacht you wish to buy. Getting familiar through actual use of different yacht types can be very helpful. What features and amenities are important to you? What kind of crew do you anticipate needing? Are you looking for a smaller, more easy-to-operate yacht or are you looking for the most luxurious yachting experience while cruising longer distances? Experience is truly the best way to get closer to accurate answers to these questions.
Understanding your estimated budget for a yacht purchase is a crucial element in narrowing down your options. While understanding that there is always a bigger and more expensive yacht, identify a price range that you are comfortable with while also factoring in crew, maintenance and operating expenses.
Once you identify the yacht type and price range, with the assistance of a yacht broker, you can begin identifying potential options. If considering used yachts, buyers will always encounter the trade-off between age and size. A newer and smaller boat can often cost the same or more than a larger vessel with more years. Of course, newer boats may have less maintenance and upkeep costs while also providing updated technology and features. It’s at this point where an experienced yacht broker can really provide tremendous value. Understanding your needs and budget, a yacht broker can provide excellent advice on selecting yachts to target for purchase that will lead to years of enjoyment and minimal stress.
Custom designing a new yacht can be a thrilling process for owners. Essentially, the owner can provide input at the earliest design phases of the process. The entire design and build process can take years, and the owner experiences taking the yacht from design concept to launch. A semi-custom approach is also available through a number of yacht manufacturers where the owner is essentially purchasing a production model and providing customizations during the build process. Again, talking through your needs and goals with a yacht broker can lead to the most optimal outcome.
Hiring the necessary and appropriate crew for your yacht is an important consideration where many yacht owners can make mistakes. TGYG’s yacht brokers have experience advising on the crew hiring process for yachts of all sizes. Consulting your yacht broker during this process can lead to ensuring the right personnel are in place and to potentially saving quite a bit of money.
Lastly, resale value of the yacht is also an important consideration. The degree to which your yacht holds its value will be based on a number of factors including the quality of the build and finish, maintenance of the vessel during the years of operation, the age of the boat and the overall market conditions at the time of sale. Discuss with your yacht broker the potential variance in resale between the yachts being considered for purchase. An experienced yacht broker who knows the market can provide guidance and help advise on how much this should be taken into consideration at the time of purchase.
As you can tell, working with an experienced yacht broker that you trust is crucial when pursuing a 70 foot yacht or bigger. With the complexity of the vessels and the many variables to consider, a yacht broker that truly knows the product can be the difference between a yacht purchase that leads to minimal stress and years of enjoyment for you and your family and a purchase that can lead to stressful ownership and regret.
Tom George Yacht Group yacht brokers pride themselves on establishing life-long relationships with clients. Our clients’ long-term enjoyment with their desired yachting lifestyle is our focus. This is evidenced by our trustworthy guidance and assistance throughout not just the purchase process but through years of ownership as well. feadship brings out the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht, project 821
Meet project 821, the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht.
Yacht builder Feadship recently unveiled what may be the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht , Project 821. It is a colossal water vehicle with a size of 118.80 meters, all running on hydrogen, which is a lightweight, ‘puffy’ substance. When hydrogen is processed in a fuel cell, the by-products are electricity and water in the form of steam. For a superyacht, it may be able to carry a lot of power without adding too much weight. The only catch, one that the Feadship team had to confront, was that hydrogen needs to be stored in an extremely cold container to keep it from taking up too much space as a gas. To do this, Feadship had to make Project 821 a bit longer than originally planned to fit a four-meter storage tank, hence its 118.80-meter size.
Feadship creates custom four-meter hydrogen storage tank
Feadship’s custom four-meter storage tank takes up quite a lot of space, eight to ten times more than regular diesel fuel would, even though the hydrogen itself is lighter. On the upside, the fuel cells on the Project 821 superyacht can also run on methanol, which is a liquid fuel that’s easier to store, a cleaner version of gasoline. Methanol doesn’t need to be super cold, so it might take up less space on the superyacht. At the moment, future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon for Feadship, who’s focusing more on the current hydrogen technology they have in front of them.
superyacht project 821 can store less energy
In terms of energy storage, superyacht Project 821 stores less energy, around 543 kW hours, compared to a similar-sized yacht of Feadship named Savannah, which uses diesel (1 megawatt hour). The new superyacht doesn’t need as much stored energy since its hydrogen fuel cells can continuously generate power while it is running. Think of it as having a refillable generator onboard, boosting the superyacht’s power instead of relying only on a battery. In this way, the hydrogen-run Project 821 eliminates noisy engines when anchored or traveling slowly, and there’s no pollution when it cruises either.
The superyacht Project 821 also has its own heat recycling system, which captures the waste heat from the engine—in this case, the fuel cells—and uses it for heating the pool, jacuzzi, and steam room on board, keeping the air at a moderate temperature in the guest areas, warming the towel bars and bathroom floors, and curtails the use of separate heaters to power up these amenities.
Feadship also installs a smart air conditioning system which automatically adjusts its temperature based on occupancy so that if nobody’s in a room, it won’t waste energy cooling it. The British RWD Studio worked on the entire look of the hydrogen-run Project 821, including the exterior, general arrangement, and all the décor inside.
Coastal vibe is the theme the design attempts to evoke, the feeling of being near the beach or ocean while in a state of luxury. Light and airy colors and interior furnishings may help bring these up, starting with the use of light colors like white, beige, and cream for the walls, furniture, and fabrics. This sense of openness and bigger space is accompanied by textured fabrics and leathers, as well as a variety of natural materials.
These include marble, rattan, eucalyptus wood, and limed oak, a light-colored wood, all of which run throughout the interior of the superyacht Project 821. The design firm also retained the shapes of certain design elements on different floors, such as door trim features and hallway railings, to create a sense of continuity, but their use of materials vary, so that the guests can have the feeling of being in a new area.
The hydrogen-run superyacht is designed for families, with the top deck resembling a whole apartment on its own. It has two bedrooms with separate bathrooms and closets, a gym,a pantry, two offices, each with a fireplace for working or relaxing, and a living room. There’s a walkaround deck with shaded areas at the front and back for lounging and enjoying the outdoors, and a jacuzzi in the front for a scenic soak.
Since Project 821 is wide, the hallways inside the superyacht are spacious to make walking around easy, allowing large side decks outside as well where guests can walk side-by-side. The superyacht has a private access point for the owners that goes all the way down to the lower deck, which features a staircase with built-in bookshelves and display areas and an elevator for easy access between decks.
On each floor, dedicated areas await guests, such as a coffee corner and a games area on the bridge deck, a library on the main deck, and a private dining room with a balcony and a connected bedroom on the lower deck. Feadship says Project 821 is the biggest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands, beating out its own sibling, Launchpad.
Even though they’re similar in length, Project 821 has 30 percent more space inside and has five floors above the water and two floors below, with the owner’s deck being as high as a 12-story building. As of publishing the story, Project 821 is being offered for sale by Edmiston.
