Her cockpit is all fishing with an expansive open deck, oversized tuna door and Murray rocket launcher. If live baiting is your thing, the large in-deck free flowing livewell has been updated to include a high capacity pump to ensure bait freshness. There are also electric outlets for kite reels under the cover boards on each side. 

+ Main Cabin

With her open bulkhead day-boat layout the 37 has an insulated drink boxes to port of her center companionway into the house and the lower helm with integrated drink box to starboard. Inside, over the port engine box is an open lounge with storage behind for 4 to 6 rods as well as storage drawers underneath all the way forward. On the starboard side is a dinette with forward and aft facing benches at the table, which features an inlaid chart of the Straights of Florida and Bahamas. There is a bulkhead windowed curtain with center rollup door. There is also a cockpit cover and transom cover. Access to the engines is through the engine box tops and to the generator through a companionway hatch.

+ Lower Cabin

The door and hatch at the forward end of the house has been replaced and can close off and lock the lower cabin. Stepping down to the lower cabin, the galley is to port with a fridge/freezer combo chest box in the counter. Over the counter is the cabinet with ship’s system power distribution and electric breakers. The sink is forward of the combo box on the counter to port. There are several drawers and storage cabinets as well. To starboard is a single berth with storage under. Forward of the galley and berth are hanging lockers on either side.

The head is fully forward with a huge accessible rope locker, several storage lockers on both sides— two to port and one to starboard as well as a sink and vanity to port. There are teak and holly floors throughout the entire interior of the boat.

+ Flybridge

The flybridge is accessed from the cockpit via custom ladder and features Merritt custom teak helmpod with tachometers, oil pressure, engine temp and voltage gauges long with single lever controls and mechanical rack and pinion steering. There are two seating benches on either side of the helm with storage under. There is a custom Merritt hardtop with recessed lights and custom three-sided enclosure, Merritt helm seat and electronics cabinets. Forward of the helm pod is a lift up, panel with Furuno NAVNET color combination unit with echo sounder, chart plotter, radar, sea temp etc. To starboard is a lift up lid to access the Icom M402 VHF, Volvo QL trim tab interface switch and fuel flow gauges.

Construction: The hull bottom is double-planked 3/8” Douglas Fir plywood and stripped cedar fastened to mahogany frames. The hull sides are stripped planked cedar, the keel, chines, sheer and frames are mahogany. The entire hull is glassed over inside and out, as well as the decks, house and bridge

Constant updates have been performed to this Classic Merritt over the past 5 years.

•   Rewired the electronics, all done by Commercial Marine in Florida at Merritt's.

•   Added a Furuno 511 NAVpilot autopilot unit, which integrates with the Navnet system.

•   Added lightweight, high-performance Glacier Bay Ultra dB acoustic insulation panels in the engine room.

•   Added Volvo QL series trim tabs. These are ultra low-profile trim tabs that operate like little fins that go down vertically - they don't have any "pad" sticking out the back like ordinary tabs. The boat does not need them, but they are there and they do not interfere with fishing lines like traditional trim tabs.

•   Installed a galvanic isolator unit to protect the boat from galvanic corrosion while connected to shore power.

•   Electric reel hookups for kite reels hidden under both sides of the cockpit combing.

•   Replaced the batteries.

•   Replaced salt water pumps, port and starboard

•   Replaced port transmission cooler

•   Installed a Dometic CDMW07 microwave flush mounted at the forward end of the kitchenette.

•   Stripped bottom paint, resealed and painted. Maintained annually.

•  Rebuilt the forward opening window, which leaked.

•   Replaced the starboard window, which was cracked.

•   Merritt built a new custom enclosure that hides all the controls on the fly bridge, including the radio, VHF, autopilot, etc.

•   Added dual FloScan fuel flow rate indicators for both engines. 

•   Added a quick kill switch for the stereo system on the boat at the flybridge helm.

•   Installed additional pairs of PolyPlanar MA5500 marine speakers for the stereo system on the flybridge and in the cockpit, along with a Clarion marine amplifier unit to power the stereo system. Speakers and grills are Awlgrip white to match the boat.

•   Added iPod stereo hookup in flybridge and in salon.

•   Installed dimmers for the AC lighting in the salon.

•   Installed independent volume control zones for volume on stereo in salon, cockpit and flybridge.

•   Installed Ethernet and onboard Wi-Fi system for boat

•   Installed Ethernet connectivity to Navnet so you can use a computer program like Maxsea and load courses into NavNet from a PC onboard.

•   Replace starboard and port engine coolant tubes.

The Tayana 37 has been constructed of the finest materials, using the best techniques. There is no better yacht in her size range on the market. With care and proper maintenance she will not only prove to be an excellent investment, she will take you cruising anywhere in the world safely and comfortably. This is being proven almost daily. Ocean crossings by Tayana 37’s are routine. Circumnavigations have been reported. By the same token, over 500 of these yachts are the primary homes of their owners. Condition: She has had many upgrades over the time that I have owned her (6 years). New Awlgrip topsides and decks (2016), Propane stove 2014, new fuel tank (2013), New canvass (2013), Cabin heater (2014), new tile counters (2015), new bowsprit (2013), bottom job (latest summer 2016), new cushions in main salon and forward cabin (2017). Accommodations: Although ideally set up for a couple to cruise, this Tayana sleeps 8 in three cabins. The spacious galley is just down the companionway to starboard. To port is a single, private pilot berth in its own cabin. With drawers under the berth, shelves, cabinets and a hanging locker there is excellent storage. I personally love this little cabin, I can have a crowd of guests aboard and still have privacy in my single “captain’s cabin”. With three opening ports and a fan, I can stay cool even in summer time. Forward of the pilot berth cabin is a large nav station with storage drawers below.The main salon to port has a pull out double berth and L shaped dinette to Port. There are also two stow-away pipe berths that can be pulled out to sleep a total of 5 in the main cabin. SeaPiper 37

SeaPiper 37 Details

The SeaPiper 37 is a contemporary trawler designed for ease of use, comfortable living, and above all, simplicity. It is a fully capable sea boat that has sufficient range for its owners to explore inland waterways, enjoy extended coastal cruising, and make occasional offshore passages. 

Of particular interest to some cruisers, the boat has the added benefit of being fully trailerable without being dismantled, and it can be trucked without special permits on North American roads. There are very few cruising yachts whose owners can spend the summer on the beautiful waters of the Pacific Northwest or Alaska, and then relax during the winter months in the Bahamas or Mexico, all in the same calendar year. 

The SeaPiper 37 can do just that. 

With general specs of 37’2” LOA and a beam of 8’6”, the boat draws under 3 feet. The foundation of this compact trawler is the ballasted and easily driven hard chine hull. This same shape that makes it trailer friendly also allows for wider cruising opportunities.

The boat has an air draft of 14 feet with the radar mast up, 8’6” when it is lowered. This means the SeaPiper 37 is great for exploring canal systems, transiting the ICW, and completing the Great Loop and its many variations without difficulty.

Not many boats can do it all, but the SeaPiper 37 may be one of them.

The hull of the 37-footer is solid fiberglass, and the builder uses honeycomb coring in the topsides and superstructure. 

The boat is powered by a single Beta 85hp diesel engine. Located low in the hull to provide an almost straight run of the propeller shaft level to the water line, the resulting low center of gravity of the engine and tankage adds significantly to the high level of stability.

In addition to this inherent stability, the SeaPiper 37 matches perfectly with the optional Seakeeper2 gyro stabilizer system to improve the already comfortable motion at sea and at anchor. Life is good with a low center of gravity and 2,000lbs of ballast.

The layout allows one to move from one space to the next without excessive climbing of ladders or stairs, with the forward stateroom and head separated from the pilothouse, salon, and galley by the large midship cockpit. The trademark element of all SeaPipers is this large and protected cockpit. It is deep and secure with large scuppers to make short work of draining the cockpit in the unlikely event of a boarding sea. Two side cockpit doors provide optimum access to docks and dinghies alongside. They are also perfect for those who cruise with pets.

The master stateroom and head are forward of the cockpit, ensuring privacy in the stateroom separated from the rest of the boat. The foredeck has 14-inch-wide side decks for crew to move forward for anchoring and line handling duty, and 31-inch handrails add to the security.

Aft of the midship cockpit is a sliding door into the pilothouse, and the helm area shares space with the cozy salon and galley. The salon has an L-shaped settee and adjustable table that converts into a double berth as necessary. The compact galley is aft and has the counter space and equipment to keep crew well fed. 

And the cook can safely step out into the aft cockpit at the stern to take a break during meal prep. With the stern door open, the ventilation through the main cabin is fantastic. The aft cockpit contains LPG tank storage and double transom doors that open out to the swim platform. This secure aft cockpit is ideal for stern line handling.

Careful inspection reveals there are four watertight bulkheads in the boat, creating five watertight compartments for the ultimate in safety at sea.

Sitting on the starboard-side, adjustable helm seat in the pilothouse, one can navigate the boat with complete confidence, as lines of sight are outstanding in almost all directions. The location of the helm keeps both ends of the boat in sight. With a large chartplotter front and center in the helm console to keep track of one’s progress, it is a simple matter to slowly approach a lock or narrow channel, thruster controls within reach, adjusting the single engine throttle to make just enough way on to gently place a fender against the lock wall. One can step into the midship cockpit and grab lines in a matter of seconds. Simple and easy.

One lifts the main hatch into the engine room from the midship cockpit to check all fluid levels and look for leaks, drips, or loose connections on wires or hoses. Everything is within reach, and there is no guesswork involved as there is no gear hidden or out of sight. It is an uncluttered engine space that will make every owner happy.

The boat is a good choice for a short-handed crew who want a capable trawler that is easy to handle, with a long keel for directional stability, and with the space and equipment for extended cruising and living aboard. It is not the right boat for cruising with multiple couples or large families, and it is not intended to serve as a dockside condo for those who like waterfront living and don’t leave the dock.

In many ways, the SeaPiper 37 is proof that less is more. It has all the essentials, yet is not large enough for washer/dryer, wine cooler, espresso machine, and all the appliances that seem to come aboard larger trawlers. And whose owners often must remain in port waiting for parts and repairs.

It is an ideal choice for the Great Loop, and it certainly has the range to cruise SE Alaska and most tropical island chains. But why stop there, when one considers the trailer potential of taking this cruiser all over North America?

SeaPiper Boats are built by talented craftsmen in Anacortes, Washington. Don’t be surprised if you happen upon one of these beauties quietly tied on the bank along the Canal du Midi in France. A bicycle kept in the cockpit makes light work of riding into town for fresh baguettes to enjoy with coffee or tea in the early morning light.

Taking life slow is not such a bad thing.

This New 37-Foot Yacht Blends Serious Sportfishing With Casual Cruising

Vicem Yachts has already won over traditional yachtsmen with its elegant, cold-molded mahogany cruisers . Now it’s hoping to reel in anglers, too.

The Turkish yard just unveiled the second sportfishing yacht in its new Tuna Masters series . The new 37 Express builds upon the 37 CC that premiered at the Palm Beach Boat Show in 2023 but features a new layout conducive to cruising.

“The Tuna Masters 37 CC has garnered considerable acclaim since its debut in early 2023,” the Vicem Yachts team said in a statement. “Now, we’re thrilled to introduce the Express version to the market, which we believe strikes the perfect balance between a serious sportfisher and a safe family cruiser.”

Created in partnership with Turkish designer Murat Iyriboz and U.S. outfit DLBA, the Tuna Masters can be used for serious angling and casual family outings. The two models showcase molded fiberglass exteriors, the same sleek hull, and an impressive beam of just over 12 feet. Both also deliver “exciting performance,” according to Vicem.

The interior is the main difference between the two: The 37 CC showcases a walkaround center console, whereas the 37 Express has more of a cruiser-style cockpit with a wraparound windscreen under the hardtop. The Express is also outfitted with a full lower cabin.

The helm is positioned front and center of the enclosed cockpit, with wraparound guest seating nestled behind. To the aft lies a triple-seater bench, two fighting chairs, a built-in bait well, and multiple pole holders. The live bait tank has an impressive capacity of 45 gallons, too.

The lower deck features a galley, a head, a rod locker, and a cabin that can be tailored to the owner. (You can opt for twin berths in a V formation or a full double V-berth if you want more space.) The fit and finish are quintessentially Vicem, with teak decking and detailed joinery throughout.

“The lower accommodation area is both versatile and exceptionally comfortable, notably featuring an impressive two-meter headroom without compromising the yacht’s sleek profile,” the team adds. “The 37 Express perfectly complements the CC version and underscores our commitment to enthusiasts who prioritize both fishing and cruising.”

As for grunt, the Express is equipped with three new Mercury 10-cylinder 350 engines instead of the standard two 350s. Vicem says the 37 Express has a top speed of 46 knots and a cruising speed of 38 knots, meaning seafarers can quickly dart to and from the fishing grounds. You can also expect a dry ride and excellent stability, according to the yard.

The first Vicem Tuna Masters 37 Express is currently in Puerto Rico.
