After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. And as a buying customer I would feel confident buying through them so you would be more likely to sell to me!

I thought that I would drop you a line to say how very pleased we were with the help and support we got from Kostas and Josiane in Ancasta Badalona. We always felt that they were working for us, not just to make a sale. In particular Kostas was able to help and advise on some of the little touches to make Ione look a little better for sale – replacing a rusty heads jubilee clip, acid cleaning around some seacocks etc. In addition he went well beyond the call of duty in taking me to his chiropractor when I wrecked my back cleaning in lockers! We are now mourning being boatless for the first time in over 40 years. Best wishes.

Home Secretary: We are determined to stop the boats

The Home Secretary has insisted the Government is still determined to “stop the boats” as migrant Channel crossings near 10,000 for the year so far.

James Cleverly said people smugglers had changed the way they operate when questioned over why the number of migrants arriving in the UK continued to rise despite the Government’s efforts to curb crossings.

He also sought to blame Labour, accusing the opposition party of delay tactics over the plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Provisional Home Office figures show 9,874 people have arrived in the UK in 2024 to date after making the journey from France – a new record high for the first five months of a calendar year.

During a visit to Essex Police headquarters, Mr Cleverly said: “We as a Government are determined to stop the boats, to break the people smuggling gangs.”

Smugglers have been “adapting their behaviour in response to the pressure we have put on with regards to the supply of small boats, to the supply of engines and illicit finance”, he said, adding: “Sadly we are seeing more and more migrants forced onto boats, incredibly dangerous, that is why we are determined to break the business model of those people smuggling gangs.”

Labour’s vow to “take things like Rwanda off the table” if the party gained power after the next general election was “a signal to the people smuggling gangs to continue doing what they’re doing”, Mr Cleverly warned.

He added: “The Rwanda scheme has been delayed because of the delaying tactics of the Labour Party.”

“I would have liked to have seen it up and running much earlier, but we are determined to crack down on those people smuggling gangs, we are determined to operationalise Rwanda as part of the measures to protect our borders and make sure facilities like Wethersfield are no longer necessary,” he said.

It comes after Mr Cleverly stressed last week that a “concerted effort” to derail the Rwanda plan through the courts will not prevent planes taking off.

He also said he wants facilities like former RAF base Wethersfield – which is in his Braintree constituency and is being used as an asylum accommodation centre – to “no longer to be needed”.

Two dead and five missing after boat collision on the River Danube in Hungary

About 90 people are said to be involved in a river and air search for the three men and two women who are unaccounted for.

Two people have died and five are missing after a boat collision on the River Danube, Hungarian police have said.

Officers found a man with a bleeding head on the shore near Veroce, about 30 miles (48km) north of Budapest, on Saturday night.

Police believe he's a survivor from the incident after the bodies of a man and woman were found nearby.

A hotel boat with a damaged hull was stopped more than 50 miles (80km) further west at Komarom.

Hungarian news site Blikk reported it was 109m (357ft) long and had collided with a motorboat. It said the hotel ship probably travelled from Budapest.

The wreck of the smaller boat was found by rescuers early on Sunday morning and towed to shore.

The search for the missing - three men and two women - is said to involve about 90 people using boats, drones and thermal imaging cameras.

Criminal proceedings have begun against an unnamed individual on suspicion of causing death and endangering water transportation.

The stretch of the river at Veroce, where the survivor was found, is about 460m (1,500ft) wide and a popular recreational area.

It's also on the route used by many cruise boats travelling between Budapest and Austrian capital Vienna.

The incident comes five years after 28 people - mainly South Korean tourists - were killed in Budapest when a boat hit a smaller tourist vessel, causing it to sink in seconds.

The captain was found guilty of negligence and sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

Microplastics found in every testicle tested – and could be affecting fertility

Significant concentrations of microplastics have been found in human testicles, raising concerns they may be adding to the global decline in sperm quality .

Researchers from the University of New Mexico analysed testicular tissue from both humans and dogs , and found every sample included microplastics . In total, they found 12 different types of material.

The team also revealed a correlation between certain microplastics and reduced sperm count in the canine samples.

Across Europe, North America , Australia and New Zealand, sperm counts are falling at around 1.5% per year. Globally, around one in six people have trouble conceiving. 

Microplastics have already been found in human placentas.

Team leader Professor Xiaozhong ‘John’ Yu has previously studied the effects of heavy metals, pesticides and endocrine-disrupting chemicals on reproductive health. He said said he began exploring the relationship between microplastics and fertility following a conversation with his colleague, Professor Matthew Campen.

‘He said, “Have you considered why there is this decline [in fertility] more recently? There must be something new”,’ said Professor Yu.

To investigate, the team obtained human testicular samples from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, and canine tissue from City of Albuquerque animal shelters and private veterinary clinics that perform spay-neutering operations.

Extracting the microplastics began by using chemicals to dissolve the fat and proteins in the tissue samples, which were then spun in an ultracentrifuge, leaving all the microplastics in a nugget at the bottom of the tube.  

What are microplastics?

To keep it simple: microplastics are tiny particles of plastic .

US-based organisation NOAA – aka the  National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration  – defines microplastic as being 5mm in diameter or less, or ‘the size of a sesame seed’.

There are also two types of microplastics: primary and secondary.

Primary microplastics are those produced directly as microparticles, such as microbeads – the little plasticky balls you used to get sometimes in toothpaste and cosmetics like exfoliating skincare gels and scrubs.

These have already been banned in the UK, US and Canada.

Another example is a microfibre from polyester, nylon or acrylic clothing.

Secondary microplastics refer to larger plastic products that have broken down into smaller pieces – such as plastic bottles, food packaging and tyres.

Microplastics are harmful to both the environment and humans. They have been found across the planet and throughout our bodies, with a growing number of scientific studies revealing the harm they can cause.

They are also almost impossible to avoid. Plastic production has increased enormously since the 1950s, and plastics take hundreds of years to decompose.

This was then heated to 600C, as different plastics emit different gases at certain temperatures, allowing the researchers to determine which plastics were present.

In dogs, the average concentration of microplastics was 122.63 micrograms per gram of tissue – a microgram is a millionth of a gram.

In humans, the concentration was almost three times higher at 329.44 micrograms per gram.

The most common plastic in both human and canine tissues was polyethylene (PE), commonly used to make bottles, food containers and plastic bags. 

‘At the beginning, I doubted whether microplastics could penetrate the reproductive system,’ said Professor Yu. ‘When I first received the results for dogs I was surprised. I was even more surprised when I received the results for humans.’

In dogs, the second most common microplastic was PVC, used in a wide range of products including bank cards, packaging, bottles and flooring. Further analysis revealed that the higher the concentration of PVC, the lower the sperm count.

Similar analysis was not possible in the human tissue because it did not contain sperm cells.

‘The plastic makes a difference – what type of plastic might be correlated with potential function,’ said Professor Yu. ‘PVC can release a lot of chemicals that interfere with spermatogenesis [the production of sperm] and it contains chemicals that cause endocrine [hormone] disruption.’ 

When it comes to studying reproduction and lifestyle, dogs are more closely associated with humans than rats or mice – particularly because they live alongside each other and share the same environment. 

‘Physically, their spermatogenesis is closer to humans and the concentration has more similarity to humans,’ said Professor Yu, adding that canine sperm counts also seem to be dropping. 

‘We believe dogs and humans share common environmental factors that contribute to their decline.’

Professor Yu also noted that the average age of men sampled was 35, meaning their exposure to microplastics began decades ago. He warned that the impact might be greater for the younger generation, with more plastic than ever in the environment.

Further research is needed to determine whether microplastics have the same impact on human sperm as in dogs and whether they are playing a role in the global decline in fertility.

However, he added that he doesn’t want anyone to panic.

‘We don’t want to scare people,’ said Professor Yu. ‘We want to scientifically provide the data and make people aware there are a lot of microplastics. We can make our own choices to better avoid exposures, change our lifestyle and change our behavior.’

The study is published in the journal Toxicological Sciences .
