The Powerboat Skipper course is a five to six day course.  This is a certificate of competency for those candidates who wish to skipper a power vessel up to 24 metres in length, in fair weather and in sight of land.

The “depth of knowledge” required for the theory portion of the Powerboat Skipper Certificate is the same as required for the International Bareboat Skipper Certificate. Candidates must have logged over 200 miles and 10 days at sea by the end of the course in order to obtain the Powerboat Skipper Certificate of Competency. It is the level of competence required when chartering a boat in the Mediterranean or West Indies where there are restrictions in terms of cruising area and distance from the base and the vessel has to be safely moored in a marina or anchored before dark. Candidates must either hold a recognised VHF Radio Operators Certificate or must take the full IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course which is included in this course and school must place order for the VHF certificate while placing the order for the Powerboat Skipper Certificate of Competency.  If ordering VHF at the same time as Powerboat Skipper please upload a note to this effect.  We have provided a sample note to upload when placing order.  * Please note that we do not accept ISSA VHF qualifications.  (I f you are unsure if your radio license will be accepted, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to [email protected] .  We will verify that your license is sufficient to receive the IYT Powerboat Skipper license).

Those who obtain the Powerboat Skipper qualification can automatically obtain the “International Certificate of Competency Power <24M” (ICC), provided the student meets the requirements as laid down by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40).  Please click this link for more information.

Certificate Limitations

  • Command of a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 metres as part of a flotilla
  • In coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore
  • Most charter agencies will insist on daylight hours as a condition to charter.

Entry Standard

  •  Should be 16 years of age or over
  • Candidates with prior experience that equates to the competency in Modules 1 – 11 may skip these modules and proceed to Module 12 (VHF-SRC) through Module 25.
  • Candidates who hold a recognised VHF-SRC CoC may obviously skip Module 12 (VHF-SRC)
  • The candidate must have logged over 200 nautical miles & 10 days at sea by end of course.

Course Outline

This course is a combination of the International Crew, VHF/SRC and Flotilla/Bareboat Skipper Power course modules. It is also the same as the IYT ICC Power <24M. Introductory Modules:

  • nautical terminology
  • vessel checkout
  • basic rope work
  • man-overboard procedures
  • anchors & anchoring

  • Take one of our online (Elearning) courses for your next level of training.
  • Plan your practical training at one of our many schools worldwide to earn your final qualification.
  • Book in advance with your school as class sizes and availability may be limited.
  • Review the IYT course progression details to learn about professional level courses.
  • Spend time on the water and properly log your seatime.

The Boating Lifestyle is one of the most rewarding pursuits available. There is something physically and emotionally invigorating when you are offshore. To enjoy the experience fully you need the proper training & skills to be safe, prepared and command a vessel.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Rya powerboat level 2 overview view dates.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course (RYA PB2) offers a general introduction to power boating and teaches core boat handling and safety skills. The course is popular both with beginners and those who are self taught and now require formal certification.

The course is generally considered, the licence for powerboats. The qualification is widely recognised throughout the world. The Powerboat Level 2 (formerly known as the National Powerboat Certificate) covers everything in the RYA Powerboat Level 1 and a lot more.

HOW LONG DOES THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE TAKE?

The RYA PB2 course takes two days

WHAT ARE THE PRE REQUISITES FOR RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 ?

  • No previous experience required
  • Minimum age of 12 years**

**Under 16s are advised, “Not be in charge of a powerboat unless under the supervision of a responsible adult”. We run separate Junior Powerboat Courses.

WHAT IS COVERED ON THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE?

This course is largely practical onboard the powerboat. There are some short theory sections to complete.

The course provides everything you need to get started with an emphasis on you becoming confident and competent at boat handling and being aware of the associated safety consideration and equipment. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is broadly equivalent to a series of driving lessons, but a lot more fun.

The RYA Powerboat Level Two will prepare you for driving a powerboat unsupervised with confidence. While primarily a boat handling (parking) course you may consider following it up with the RYA Powerboat Intermediate Course which covers high speed navigation and passage making in far more detail.

Powerboat instructor pointing.

RYA PB2 Training at Chieftain Training is comprehensive. We aim to make life as easy as possible for our students and provide the following within the course:

  • 2 days of instruction
  • Use of our RIB (rigid inflatable boat)
  • Loan of a life jacket
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
  • RYA Start Powerboating Handbook
  • Free on street parking
  • 1 year free subscription to Powerboat & RIB Magazine

NOT INCLUDED

  • Wet weather gear (this can be hired for £5 a day)
  • Lunch (Can be bought locally, but we recommend you bring a packed lunch)

OPTIONAL EXTRAS

International certificate of competence.

If you require a powerboat licence for driving in other European countries, we can take care of the paperwork for your  ICC (International Certificate of Competence) , which is subject to a small RYA administration fee for non-RYA members, or is free for RYA members.

Fast Track 1:1 day for experienced drivers

If you already have experience as a powerboater, need to gain your Level 2 certifIcate and don’t wish to undertake the introductory elements of the Level 2 course, you can instead attend a shorter 1:1 course which consists of the relevant coaching and a direct assessment. Please contact us to find out more.

“Teen” Powerboat Level 2 (RYA PB2) courses

Lets face it, our kids probably have more fun without us around. 12-15 years old can join our Youth Powerboat Level 2 Course . They receive the same course, however they will be learning with other 12-15 year olds.

“Family” Powerboat Level 2 courses

If you have just bought a new boat why not train together as a family. We train upto 3 of you together or can spread a larger family across 2 boats. Full information is at Family Level 2 Courses .

Own Boat Tuition

We can run this course on board your own boat.  We can train 1-3 of you at a time and bespoke the course around your boat and your likely usage.

WHAT RATIO IS RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 TAUGHT TO?

This course will run with no more than 3 students per boat and Instructor, sometimes less.

HOW LONG IS THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE VALID FOR?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate does not expire. Drivers who qualified some time ago and for whatever reason did not make use of their training are advised to refresh by re-attending the course. If you choose to commercially endorse the PB2, then your Commercial Endorsement will expire after 5 years.

BOOKING THE COURSE:

The Powerboat Level Two course is run every weekend and frequently during the week. If you can’t find a suitable date from the list, please contact us and we will do our best to arrange a convenient date.

We can also run the course 1:1 at a time that best suits you and even on your own boat, if you would prefer. Please contact us for details of own boat tuition.

IS THE POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE FOR ME?

Wondering if this is the course for you? The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is suitable for a wide range of people, from beginners wanting to gain skills and improve confidence, to those with a bit more experience looking to gain their powerboat ‘licence’. Some people’s aim is simply to be able to drive a speedboat for fun, others look to use the skill as a vehicle for their sport or job. This course might appeal to:

  • Water-skiiers
  • Wake-boarders
  • Lifeboat crew
  • Super-yacht deck crew who will drive the tender
  • Powerboat owners
  • Offshore wind farm crew
  • Harbour masters, police
  • Safetyboat crew and cox’ns
  • Lifeboat volunteers

If you are unsure as to whether the Level Two course is the one for you, please don’t hesitate to contact one of our course advisors to discuss your options in detail.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 DIRECT ASSESSMENT

If you have existing experience of power-boating and require a Level 2 Certificate then there is the option to attend a bespoke direct assessment. This option will save you time versus attending a two day course but is reserved for those with existing experience.

Half day RYA Powerboat Level 2 Direct Assessment

The Instructor will expect you to perform the following manoeuvres

  • Holding Off
  • Departing from and returning to an alongside berth in various states of wind and/or tide
  • Turn using warps
  • Picking Up a Mooring
  • Turning in a confined space
  • Planing speed handling

You will also need to answer oral questions on the following subjects

  • Safety equipment
  • Sources of weather info
  • Basic chartwork / passage planing

One Day RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) Direct Assessment

If some of the above skills are a little out of practice then we can offer you a bespoke one-day 1:1 option (for experienced power-boaters only). We conduct your 1:1 direct assessment in the afternoon, but before that, our Instructor spends the morning with you coaching those skills/knowledge which are a little rusty.

Direct assessments are bespoke, please contact us to arrange.

BOOKING THE RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE:

If the dates below do not suit you we can set up a bespoke 1:1, 2:1 or group course at a time that suits you.

The RYA Powerboat scheme that we specialise in teaching has a series of logical steps or building blocks to it. However, when you start looking at the powerboat training courses that are available it can sometimes be unclear what you need to do. Here we will explain to you the benefits of doing each course so you can decide how far you want to take your training. You can click on any of the icons on this page and get the specific details of each course we offer.

Level 2 powerboat training courses

RYA Powerboat Level 2

The RYA powerboat training courses start with the Powerboat Level 2 course. There is a Level 1 course but this is really designed for children. It doesn’t get you a licence and just increases your costs. We don’t offer it.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two day course. Upon successful completion of this course you will be issued a UK licence to drive powerboats up to 10 metres in length. That’s a pretty big boat after just two days on the water!

During the course we will cover all the basics of seamanship and basic boat handling. We will teach you how to manoeuvre in the wind and tide and show you how to do various tasks. These will include anchoring, picking up a mooring buy for a lunch stop, recovering a person from the water and safe high speed driving and cornering. We also include a free VHF course. Not a bad bundle for £325 ?

The Powerboat licence can, if you wish, be converted into an ICC. That’s an International Certificate of Competence. This licence will allow you to drive powerboats while on holiday in the sun. Living the dream! In order to do this you simply need to send a form and a passport photo off to the RYA and for the princely sum of £45 they will issue your international licence. Alternatively, if you join the RYA for 1 year, they will issue the licence for free. Bargain!

Bear in mind though, most reputable places abroad will require you to have a VHF radio licence in order to legally charter a boat while you’re on holiday. That’s why we include it for free?️

Level 2 powerboat training courses

RYA Essential Navigation

An extremely sensible add on to the Powerboat Level 2 course is the Essential Navigation classroom course. At £125 it’s not an expensive course but it does mean another weekend training. The benefit of this is the safety knowledge it gives you to take on the water when you go boating.

A bit like the highway code for boats it will teach you how to interpret the maps, to avoid getting caught out by the tide and how to avoid hazards and plan a safe day on the water.

Most students tend to stop at this point to be honest. They have a ICC and a VHF radio licence so they can hire a boat on holiday. They also have just enough knowledge to be sensible and stay safe on the water. So at this point we have done enough high quality training for them to have the confidence they need as well as the skills.

Powerboat IRPCS Revision Sheet

RYA Intermediate Powerboat Training Courses

The intermediate powerboat training course is the next step in the journey. Again, it’s a two day course and people come back to it at different times. It’s an excellent course to do as we go off visiting new places. You will make a plan to enter a different harbour and then follow the plan on the water.

The intermediate powerboat training course teaches you to go further afield on even bigger adventures. That’s why people come back to it at different times. It depends how much boating you do after your Powerboat Level 2 course but eventually you will want to visit more places. It’s part of getting the best out of your new hobby. ?

Rather than focusing on boat handling, although this is still included, we will teach you to plan a coastal passage. From our base in Poole Harbour, this could mean navigating to a secluded cove on the Jurassic Coast. Visiting Christchurch for lunch at the Captain’s Club. Or a gentle river trip to a country village.

Day Skipper Theory

The Day Skipper theory course is a thorough navigation course that will give you the knowledge to plan coastal passages and keep everybody safe too.

This course has a minimum of 40 hours classroom time. During the course we will teach you:

  • Position fixing and GPS navigation
  • Rules of the road
  • Weather forecasting
  • How to get into new harbours
  • Tidal calculations
  • Emergency and safety procedures

Day Skipper IRPCS Revision Sheet

Take Things Pro With These Powerboat Training Courses

After the intermediate course there are a range of courses and exams required so that you can go pro. Lets explore these options in more detail.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Course

Yachtmaster Theory and the Advanced Powerboat Course

The Advanced powerboat course is required training in order to take the commercial skipper exam. During the course we will take you out in the dead of night and teach you to navigate by the lights. You will be trained to the point that you can stop the boat in the middle of the ocean within 5 metres of an unmarked position. It’s pretty cool stuff.

In order to gain the knowledge and be capable to pass the course you will have to have recorded between 400 and 800 miles of experience on the water. You will also need to pass the Yachtmaster theory course to give you the knowledge needed at a professional level.

This is also a two day course but you can expect a very late night. We will teach you how to conduct search patterns, give safety briefs and give you the tools to take paying passengers to sea.

The Advanced Powerboat Exam

The advanced exam is conducted by an independent examiner from the RYA. He will expect you to have a thorough knowledge of everything in the syllabus and be a capable boat handler.

Successful completion of this exam will qualify you to drive power driven vessels, up to 24 metres in length, as a commercial skipper. ?️

Become an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Instructor

This is probably one of the most awesome ways to earn extra pennies there is. It’s also not that hard to achieve which is the good news.

In order to be eligible to become an instructor you need to hold a Level 2 certificate and have three seasons experience of driving powerboats. Having said that, if you drive boats as part of your job, this is cut down to one season.

If you meet that criteria you can attend a skills assessment day with an independent powerboat trainer. If you make the grade then you can attend the week long instructor course. During the course you will learn how t structure and deliver an RYA powerboat level 2 course. On a successful pass you can then teach the course. We pay £100 per day for powerboat instructors. Not bad over a two day course program. ?

Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat Instructor

To be able to teach at the top level of the powerboat scheme you have to have been a powerboat level 2 instructor for at least a year. You also have to hold the advanced course certificate and the COC exam qualification.

If you do then it’s the same again. Attend an instructor course conducted by an RYA trainer. If your successful you can then teach people to go further afield and take them on adventures in the dark.

However far you decide to take your hobby or professional qualifications, we have the right powerboat training courses and the right attitude to your learning. We will work with you and get you where you want to be. Wherever that may be. ?????

Student Reviews

Excellent course and very thorough. I had one issue with something technical and Grant responded right away to offer assistance. Couldn't recommend more!

The animations were useful to help understand the subjects.

The interactive content was great. Also the animations helped a lot with learning the concepts. I also liked the additional useful information given above the course content. Especially some of the external links. The value for money was good as well.

Wealth of additional information to consider as you begin to set up your boat for cruising.

This is a very thorough preparation for the RYA Day Skipper Theory test. There are so many, excellent practice questions and exercises throughout the course, that I couldn't help but ask myself "is that all?" upon reaching the end of the final exam. The RYA material itself is excellent and the NauticEd material online summarizes and supplements the key points very well.

kept the nose to the grindstone had to get money out of the deal

The content was comprehensive with clear examples and animations making it easy to understand. The end of module questions really helped consolidate what I had learned. I loved being able to take the course at my own pace, fitting my learning around other commitments. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to gain a good knowledge base that can be used whenever you go out sailing.

RYA courses are far superior to anything this side of the pond. NauticEd Ed presents the material well and the proctored remote exams are superb. You need this qualification along with the practical RYA Day Skipper to sail in many European Countries. Don’t go to Greece without it.

covers the material very well and in depth provides practical advice for real-life situations the structure and feel of the course is consistent with the RYA exam - I felt very well prepared for the exam

Excerpt from the course

The following is an excerpt from this course

RYA Day Skipper Course: Tides and Current

... So what are the tide heights at times other than at high and at low? You can not assume a linear progression. It more acts like a sine curve. To calculate the tide height at any time you use a tide curve specific for that location.

... The following animation shows how to predict the tidal height using a tide chart.

Course Description:

The 24M Powerboat Skipper Certification Course is an intensive program designed for individuals aspiring to become competent powerboat skippers, capable of handling power vessels up to 24 meters in length. This course provides a comprehensive certificate of competency that enables candidates to navigate in fair weather conditions and within sight of land.

The course spans a duration of five days, during which candidates will acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to skipper a powerboat effectively. The theoretical portion of the course aligns with the depth of knowledge required for the International Bareboat Skipper Certificate. To obtain the Powerboat Skipper Certificate of Competency, candidates must also have logged over 200 nautical miles and spent at least 10 days at sea by the end of the course.

The training emphasizes the level of competence necessary for chartering a boat in regions like the Mediterranean or West Indies, where specific restrictions on cruising areas and distance from the base apply. Candidates will learn essential skills such as safely mooring in marinas, anchoring before dark, and navigating within prescribed boundaries.

To enroll in this course, candidates must either possess a recognized VHF Radio Operators Certificate or complete the full IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course, which is included in the curriculum. When ordering the Powerboat Skipper Certificate of Competency, the school will also place an order for the VHF certificate. It is important to note that ISSA VHF qualifications are not accepted.

Upon successfully obtaining the Powerboat Skipper qualification, candidates will automatically be eligible to obtain the "International Certificate of Competency Power <24M" (ICC) as per the requirements set by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40). The ICC opens doors to various international cruising opportunities and destinations.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course and License

What is the rya powerboat organization, can an interested applicant receive a skipper license in the usa.

The Offshore Sailing organization is one of the two United States sailing universities and they offer the RYA level 2 powerboat sailing courses and certificates.

What is the process that a student experiences while receiving a sailing course?

The individual process of each new student may depend on the prior experience that the prospective sailor may have. The type of boat or ship that the student wants to sail will, also, determine the courses taken and the kind of license received. By completing RYA level 2 powerboat course you will upgrade your license and become even more qualified skipper with a better career perspective.

The conditions of the licenses will limit the employment positions and the experience and training will be looked over when the new licensee interviews for a skipper position. For example, a skipper of a yacht on coastal cruises may have a certain type of license. Another kind of license may be limited to certain kinds of boats and trips. The particular waters that the ship sails through needs to be matched with a particular license qualification.

ROYAL YACHTING ASSOCIATION

The cruiselines usually have additional city tours and day activities off of the boat that the ship captain needs to be aware of. Often the itinerary of the passengers is overseen by the ship’s skipper and being aware of such hospitality options would be a positive experience to bring to any captain’s employment.

Safe Boating Campaign’s Annual National Safe Boating Week Celebrates All Boaters This May 18-24, 2024

CLEARWATER, Fla., May 13, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- National Safe Boating Week will be held from May 18-24, 2024, reminding all boaters to brush up on boating safety skills and prepare for the boating season. This observance week is the annual kick-off of the Safe Boating Campaign, a global awareness effort that encourages boaters to make the most of their boating adventure by being responsible.

“Our goal is to remind boaters that a safe boating experience on the water begins and ends with safe boating decisions,” said Peg Phillips, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council, a nonprofit dedicated to helping create a safe boating experience for all boaters and the lead organization of the Safe Boating Campaign.

“This National Safe Boating Week, be a responsible boater by preparing for the unexpected. Set a positive boating example for all to see by inspecting your safety gear, using an engine cut-off switch, filing a float plan, and always wearing a life jacket,” Phillips continued.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three out of every four recreational boating fatalities, and that 85 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

There are many options for boaters when it comes to choosing a life jacket. When selecting a life jacket, a boater should check that it is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for the water activity, and fits properly.

“Wearing a life jacket is the simplest action a boater can take to stay safe on the water,” said Phillips. “Your life jacket is the most important boating gear required, and real boaters always wear them.”

The National Safe Boating Council recommends these tips for boaters:

  • Take a boating safety course.  Gain valuable knowledge and on-water experience in a boating safety course with many options for novice to experienced boaters.
  • Check equipment.  Schedule a free vessel safety check with local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons to make sure all essential equipment is present, working and in good condition.
  • Make a float plan.  Always let someone on shore know the trip itinerary, including operator and passenger information, boat type and registration, and communication equipment on board before you leave the dock.
  • Wear a life jacket.  Make sure everyone wears a life jacket – every time. A stowed life jacket is no use in an emergency.
  • Use an engine cut-off switch – it’s the law.  An engine cut-off switch is a proven safety device to stop a powerboat engine should the operator unexpectedly fall overboard.
  • Watch the weather.  Always check the forecast before departing on the water and frequently during the excursion.
  • Maintain a proper lookout.  On average, one in every three reported boating accidents are caused by operator inattention or improper lookout.
  • Know where you’re going and travel at safe speeds.  Be familiar with the area, local boating speed zones, and always travel at a safe speed.
  • Never boat under the influence.  A BUI is involved in one-third of all recreational boating fatalities. Always designate a sober skipper.
  • Keep in touch.  Have more than one communication device that works when wet. VHF radios, emergency locator beacons, satellite phones, and cell phones can all be important devices in an emergency.

The Safe Boating Campaign is produced under a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The campaign offers a variety of free and paid resources to support local boating safety education efforts. Learn more at www.safeboatingcampaign.com.
