Owners Lunch at the Yacht Club de Monaco: Explorers and scientists at the rendezvous
On the opening day of the Monaco Yacht Show, Yacht Club de Monaco invited a hundred owners of yachts flying the YCM flag for its traditional Owners Lunch. This year, the sum of the linear metres of their yachts was 2,207m. On this occasion an agreement was signed with The Explorers Club, founded in 1904 to promote scientific exploration. In 1921, Prince Albert 1st was made an honorary member while in 2017 YCM President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco received the prestigious Lowell Thomas Award from The Explorers Club.
Joining forces for a common goal
“This agreement reflects yet again our Club’s commitment to environmental issues, as well as the bond that unites Monaco and The Explorers Club,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary. “ Our wish is to bring together all those who are witnesses to climate change and those working to combat the problem”.
“ It means we share the same missions, one of which is to preserve the planet in every way possible or imaginable. We are joining forces in the noble quest for innovation, paving the way to a brighter more sustainable future for our oceans and the world,” adds Sir William Roseman , Executive Director at The Explorers Club which has 4,000+ members from over 60 countries.
The challenge of an era
Also present as a guest at the Owners Lunch was Dr Nina Lanza , Team Leader for Team Lead for Space and Planetary Exploration in Space Remote Sensing and Data Science (ISR-6) at the Los Alamos Laboratory. “ The ocean has long captured our imaginations. We have always considered it to be an eternal, unlimited resource. But appearances can be deceptive. Oceans are much more ephemeral than we often think they are,” explained the researcher. “ Oceans are probably the cradle of life. That’s why exploration is so important: it teaches us to know ourselves and know the future”.
The attendance of these two leading figures echoes the 13th Environmental Symposium, due to be held 21st March 2024 before the YCM Explorers Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts , two initiatives under the aegis of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach. “ We reward people who genuinely care about sustainability. We need to understand that our impact on the planet is disproportionate and that we can actually alter our environment. This event is an opportunity to recognise those who are doing their best to maintain these sustainable explorations,” believes Dr Nina Lanza. A sentiment shared by Sir William Roseman for whom this meeting is essential. As he says, “ we would not be here today discussing these issues if YCM and its members did not share the same objective”.
It is through these international events that YCM is establishing itself as a proactive stakeholder in the environmental transition of yachting, positioning itself as a communication platform for all those involved in building the yachting sector of tomorrow.

A "Free Spirit" building designed by Lord Foster
At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.
Interior spaces
Length of the building, height of the building (sea level/terrace), an eco-responsible approach.
This emblematic building has been designed in response to the local climate and sets high standards in sustainable design that complies with HQE standards. A passive design, the structure balances shade and natural light and the glass facades can be opened for natural ventilation.
Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea water cooling systems take advantage of the sun and waterfront site. LED low energy lighting, state of the art systems to manage energy use, waste and water, and points to recharge electric-powered cars have been integrated into the design.
Account has been taken of the life-time sustainability of the building, a factor behind the choice of local materials such as the use of European oak on the terraces, isolation panels and recycled aggregates for the foundations, as well as employing local companies. The Green Building approach also aims to minimise the impact of building works on the neighbours.
ISO 14001 NORM
A commitment for the planet.
In an ongoing quest to seek solutions to the environmental problems of our time, since 1 st January 2018, the YCM has been committed to ensuring the electricity it uses comes from renewable energy sources. The initiative follows various actions already taken which include achieving ISO 14001 certification in June 2016, a management system giving the Club eco-responsible organisation status.
It is this spirit which drives the YCM’s sustainable policy, the aim being to guarantee the needs of present generations while preserving resources for future generations. This commitment to the environment determines key objectives of the environmental management system, namely to accelerate our progress on waste management, prevention and control of pollution risks, preservation of natural resources and implementation of a sustainable purchasing policy.

For sailing all year round
Sports Section
Remaining as committed as ever to its training policy, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Sailing Division, founded by Prince Rainier III in 1970, offers its members a wide range of sailing activities suited to their age, level and nautical experience.
Be it on Optimists, Bugs, Toppers, ILCA, kitesurfs and J/70s, lessons, coaching and training sessions are organised all year round by eleven state qualified instructors and coaches, whose mission is to teach them all about sailing, discovering the sea and safeguarding the maritime environment. The youngest, from 6 years old, can start learning on Bugs or Toppers.
The YCM Marina: for owners and members calling into Monaco
Located directly in front of the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new building on Quai Louis II, the YCM Marina has been in operation since October 2013. With 26 berths for yachts from 25m to 60m, the complex has a pontoon for tenders and departure point for charters. Superyacht owners will have privileged access to the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Clubhouse throughout their stay in the Principality, as well as facilities offered by BMW, the YCM’s Official Car.
Not only is this orientation towards the luxury yachting sector a big opportunity for Monaco to consolidate its position as a mecca for yachting, but also a source of direct and indirect revenue.

At the Yacht Club de Monaco the Explorer Awards ceremony
Awarding the owners who stand out for their commitment to protecting the marine environment.
MONACO, March 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Awarding the owners who stand out for their commitment to protecting the marine environment. It is the aim of the YCM Explorer Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts that were handed out at a ceremony held at the Yacht Club de Monaco on Thursday 20th March after an environmental symposium dedicated to exploration, as part of the activities planned for the Ocean Week and under the aegis of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach. Organised under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II, since 2019 it is awarded by a jury of professionals. Attending the event there were the prince of Monaco Albert II and many famous explorers such as Mike Horn, Bertrand Piccard, Nina Lanza, Kathryn Sullivan and Victor Vescovo. A large delegation of the New York based Explorers Club also took part in the event.
Four awards were handed out: Technology & Innovation went to the 25 meter ‘Cachalote’ who also got a four star Sea Index certificate for sustainability: “I’m moved because we dreamt about a ship that we had never seen before. The construction of it considered many elements such as the culture of our ancestors, the impact of nature and sustainability,” said owner Francisca Cortés Solari. The Science & Discovery went to 68 meter Archimedes: “I feel very lucky to have gone to so many places yet I feel like we’re just scratching the surface and coming to understand what the problems are. I feel very surpised that we won the award. I thought that we might be a candidate but never thought that we could win.” The Adventure & Environmental Ethics award went to 49 meter motor yacht ‘Gigi’: “I got a little emotional up there on the stage. From the beginning of this project we wanted to be different. Just to be invited to speak here it’s the confirmation that we’re doing it right. To get this tonight, I’m just speechless didn't expect it,” said owner Carl Allen. A special ‘Coup de Cœur’ prize was handed out to 47 meter motor yacht ‘Latitude’. Picking up the prize was captain Sean Meagher on behalf of the owner Anil Thadani: “We just won the Explorer award at the Yacht Club de Monaco in combination with the Monaco Yacht Club and the New York Explorers Club and I am a member of both and honored to be here.”
The awards are a way of promoting men and women who are true explorers, perpetuating YCM’s fundamental Art de Vivre la Mer values.
Earlier in the week the inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock also took place. The seven yachts displayed on the quey of the Club, M/Y Beyond Capricorn,M/Y Prometej, M/Y Audace,M/Y King Benji, S/Y NDS Evolution,M/Y U Boat NavigatorandM/Y Santandrea, represented a combinationof passion for adventure and innovation.

Text description provided by the architects. The yacht club is the symbolic centrepiece of the Monaco's remodelled harbour front. It celebrates the principality's spectacular coastline and its nautical heritage, creating a series of deck-like terraces that step up along the harbour to offer unrivalled views out to races at sea or inland over the course of the renowned Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. Located on an area of reclaimed land, the development extends the city's existing marina eastwards and can accommodate a range of craft, from sailing boats to 100-metre super yachts.
The club is entered via a glazed atrium that frames views out over the harbour to the palace. On the first floor are a clubroom, bar and restaurant
Above is a double-height function space, and above that an apartment for the club secretary and a series of 'cabins' for visiting guests. The uppermost floors accommodate a range of event spaces. The observation decks are shaded by retractable fabric screens supported by a mast and booms. The harbour elevations are fully glazed and shaded by louvres, and can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems have all been integrated to ensure the building sets new sustainability standards, in line with Monaco's environmental ambitions.
The scheme also introduces shops and other amenities at quay level to animate the harbour.
The lower floors accommodate a rowing club and sailing school, whose sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats. Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and nautical society. Bounded on one side by the club's restaurant terrace and leading on the other side to a new exhibition hall, it complements the sequence of green spaces in this densely populated city and forms a new link in the pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

Become a member
One team, one spirit, one club.
An individual wishing to become a member of the YCM needs to be introduced by two ‘sponsors’, both must be YCM society members. Any person who has been a society member for more than one year (with the exception of Board Members) may propose one applicant per session.
Twice a year, HSH Prince Albert II, President of the Yacht Club de Monaco, convenes a meeting of the Admissions Committee to examine all applications. New members are officially welcomed to the YCM at a cocktail party attended by members, after which it is customary for the new entrant to celebrate his or her membership at a dinner in the Club’s restaurant.
The Candidate
One of the sponsors must request an application form from the ‘Service Membres’ and go in person to pick it up. The form, having been duly completed and signed by the candidate and the two sponsors, should be accompanied by a letter of introduction from the first sponsor, explaining why the candidate wishes to join. It must be returned to ‘Service Membres’ within six months. After this date, the application will be cancelled.
The Sponsor
The sponsor plays a key role when introducing a new member to the Yacht Club de Monaco. It is their responsibility to ensure that newcomers fully embrace life at the Yacht Club, by introducing them to other members and involving them in events organised by the Club, whether they be of a social, cultural or sporting nature. The sponsor should also be committed to ensuring that the person they propose is encouraged to adopt the YCM’s philosophy and values, by actively participating in the life of the Club and constantly striving to raise the YCM’s standards.
Only one applicant per sponsor (society member) may be proposed and submitted per session for approval to the Admissions Committee which reserves the right to refuse any applicant without notification.

Canadian billionaire who once flipped burgers at McDonald’s has got the biggest private yacht to the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix and paid $141,000 just to moor it near the tracks and enjoy the race from his $200 million floating palace.
A Superlative Vantage Point, at a High Cost
Owning a luxury vessel comes with high costs, including annual maintenance, crew salaries, fuel charges, and hotel expenses. During the Monaco GP event, these costs extend with substantial berthing charges. According to the Formula 1 Grand Prix rate chart , docking charges for a boat like Faith, which spans 95 meters or 315 feet, would not ideally fit in the trackside zone due to its size. The next best option for Faith Yacht is Zone 1, which has docking charges of $141,000.
Faith: Fabulous, Flamboyant, and Full of Luxuries
Faith is a winner not just of hearts but also of several well-deserved awards such as the World Superyacht Award 2018, Motoryacht of the Year, Best Displacement Motoryacht 2000GT and above, and Boat International Design & Innovation Awards for Best GA & Deck Design, Best Interior Design, and Best Tender. With RWD responsible for exteriors and interiors and naval architecture by Feadship, this five-deck beauty accommodates 18 guests in 9 staterooms, with 32 crew members. Stewards: No further action for Hülkenberg
Mark Thompson/Getty Images
After meeting with stewards, Haas driver Nico Hülkenberg has also been cleared of allegations he impeded during qualifying. Early in the session, Alpine driver Esteban Ocon radioed that the Haas driver had blocked him in Turn 3. Both cars were having issues with radio communications, hindering Hülkenberg from knowing Ocon was approaching. Here's more from the stewards:
"The team had attempted to warn Car 27 of the arrival of Car 31 on a fast lap but the radio communication system was not working reliably and the driver of Car 27 did not receive the messages. We heard the radio messages from the team to the driver but it appears that those messages did not go through to the car.
The driver of Car 31 confirmed that he too had issues with the communication system. We had similar reports of intermittent radio messages from another team today.
The driver of Car 31 acknowledged that, because the entry of Turn 3 is blind, the driver of Car 27 could not have known of his approach without the benefit of a radio warning. He also felt that, notwithstanding the fact that he caught Car 27, he was not materially impacted during that lap by Car 27 because Car 27 picked up the pace at Turn 4.
Given that the team had attempted to warn their driver appropriately of the arrival of Car 31; in the light of the technical issues with the radio communications; and the fact that the driver of Car 31 said that he was not materially impacted, we took no further action."

Stewards: No further action for Sainz

After both drivers met with the race stewards, Carlos Sainz will not be penalized for allegedly impeding Alex Albon during qualifying at Monaco earlier today. Sainz admitted to stewards that he knew Albon was coming on a push lap, but didn't have enough room at the exit of Turn 16 to give the Williams driver proper space. The stewards' judgment reads:
"The driver of Car 55 (Sainz) stated on hindsight that he could perhaps have gone off the track and thereby given Car 23 (Albon) more room but felt that he did not unnecessarily impede Car 23 as he took the necessary steps on the track to give him space.
The driver of Car 23 was able to complete his push lap and although he may have lost a tenth and a half in terms of time and was therefore affected, he said it was, in his mind, "grey" as to whether or not he was unnecessarily impeded by Car 55. He did not think this was a clear case of impeding. He acknowledged that the part of the circuit was particularly difficult at it is a sequence of blind corners and that Car 55 could not have seen Car 23 approaching any sooner.
In the light of the above, we took no further action."
Haas cars fail a technical check, summoned by stewards
According to a report from Jo Bauer, the FIA Formula One Technical Delegate, "The uppermost rear wing element adjustable positions were checked on car numbers 20 and 27. The LHS and RHS outermost area of the of the adjustable elements were exceeding the maximum allowed 85mm on both cars.”
The matter was referred to the stewards as it was not in compliance. If the stewards decide to issue a penalty, both Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg will be excluded from qualifying.
No surprises for Verstappen, despite his difficult Red Bull
Max Verstappen could have qualified higher had he not clunked a barrier on his final shot at pole in Q3. But that wasn’t so much a case of being unfortunate, as a result of his Red Bull's lack of grip.
And he doesn't expect to enjoy his race day either starting P6.
💬 "It's not something that came as a surprise to me because I knew our limitations already, coming into this weekend. But it's been bad. I can't take any curbs and it honestly feels like I'm driving a go-kart with no suspension and no damping.
“I felt really comfortable in the high-speed corners. At least that was enjoyable. But the low speed we're just losing too much.
"Looking at tomorrow, I mean, if it's just a straightforward race then there's not that much you can do. We don't have the fastest car, so it's not like we qualified out of position. We'll see what happens."
You’re on a boat!
Earlier this week, while Pat looked at how the 99 per cent can enjoy the Monaco Grand Prix, I did a bit of digging into how the ultra-rich do it, particularly those who want to watch from the water.
If you’ve got your own yacht, expect to cough up about $22,000 to park it in the harbor for the Thursday to Monday stretch. And that’s only if you’ve got a piddling 80-footer. The Monaco Yacht Club lists prices for boats up to about 230 feet — that would be $92,240, merci beaucoup. But hey, at least:
- there’s a high correlation between yacht owners and people who can afford such prices; and
- that parking spot includes access for two people to the marina’s clubhouse between Friday and Sunday.
If you don’t own a yacht but want to be on one, fear not: multiple outfits offer viewing packages that should scratch your itch. Irvine Consultancy hosts a Sunday post-race yacht party for 750 € ($814) that includes a “VIP buffet” and open bar (no liquor).
Senate Grand Prix’s “Surf and Turf” package includes viewing from various land-based points on Friday and Saturday, and access to a triple-decker yacht for Sunday’s race. Prices start at $8,540 per person, and include a three-night hotel stay, lunch, drinks, and souvenir lanyard.

Monaco GP: How to enjoy F1’s most glamorous race weekend on the cheap
Sainz and Hülkenberg under investigation for impeding
A few drivers are meeting with race stewards about alleged impeding incidents during qualifying that could change the race order. We'll hear rulings within the hour, most likely.
- Nico Hülkenberg (P12) will meet with stewards about allegedly impeding Esteban Ocon (P11) in Turn 3.
- Carlos Sainz (P3) will meet with stewards about allegedly impeding Alex Albon (P9) in Turn 15. Albon was also summoned to discuss the incident, as is standard protocol.
Obviously either could affect the grid for tomorrow's grand prix.
A pleasant surprise from McLaren for Stella
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was happy with his team's Saturday, as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris pocketed P2 and P4 respectively on the provisional grid.
Each is behind a Ferrari, while ahead of everyone else as they prepare for the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. Here's Stella:
💬 "This is above where we hoped to be because at times, during qualifying as well, we saw many teams had the potential to be up for the first couple of rows of the grid.
"For Lando, the day was actually decided by the mechanics and the team responding in time to the problem we had with part of the advertising ended up in the under the car."
It's been a good period for McLaren. Let's see what the lean, mean yellow and green machines can do from those starting slots tomorrow.
Leclerc’s new engineer is way more of a chatterbox
Charles Leclerc got a new race engineer as of the last race at Imola, with Bryan Bozzi taking over from Xevi Marcos Padros, and I could hear a huge difference in their interactions during qualifying.
Bozzi is far chattier on the radio, particularly warming up for qualifying laps, providing information on the gaps between the cars and the tire usage.

Alonso blames traffic for Q1 exit
It felt a little more unfortunate than anything for Fernando Alonso , who also exited Q1 in his Aston Martin. Here's the Spaniard's reaction from the media pen:
💬 “A lot of traffic. That was a killer for our qualifying. I lost three-tenths with a car just in front. And then another two tenths in the last corner. There were three cars parked there. No one to blame. They cannot vanish. This is Monaco and the cars are very big.
"But yeah, we found ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time today and this is very painful here in Monaco.
"It's going to be a parade of cars tomorrow, but we can do you it. We need to do the job on Saturday. We didn't manage it so we need to do better next time."
Perez not hopeful to his grand prix chances
Monaco is not the place to botch your qualifying, so there's a little bit of extra sympathy due to Sergio Perez as his Red Bull sits P18 for tomorrow's grid. Here's how the Mexican reacted after the Q1 exit:
💬 “I got into traffic on my lap, enough to lose a couple of tenths. We didn’t hook it together and this is the result. It's quite a bad day for myself; there’s nothing we can hope for tomorrow.
“We had the pace to get through but like always, you have to put it together when you have the chance.”
Could Piastri notch his first win?
Going into tomorrow’s race Leclerc is surely the favorite, but as the Ferrari driver noted qualifying isn’t quite everything in Monaco — and he’ll have the McLaren sophomore starting beside him on the front row.
Oscar Piastri has been knocking on the door lately, but has been held back by some rotten luck: a penalty bumped him off the front row at Imola last week, and an encounter with Sainz knocked him out of the running in Miami before that.
If he benefits from a clean race tomorrow, he’s got a really good shot at securing his maiden win, and McLaren’s second of 2024.
Leclerc: Qualifying isn’t everything in Monaco
Charles Leclerc couldn’t hide his grin while speaking after taking pole position in Monaco. But he’s been here before.
This is his third Monaco pole in F1, repeating the feat from 2021 and 2022, yet he’s never finished his home race on the podium. He said:
💬 “Really, really happy about the lap. The excitement is so high, it feels really good. However, now I know more often than not in the past that qualifying is not everything.
“As much as it helps for Sunday’s race, we need to put everything together for Sunday. In the past years we didn’t manage to do so.”
The Q3 shootout and provisional top-10
Here's how Q3 finished in the end, and that sharp end of the grid for tomorrow's Monaco Grand Prix:
- 1: LECLERC (FER) 1:10.270
- 2: Piastri (MCL) 1:10.424
- 3: Sainz (FER) 1:10.518
- 4: Norris (MCL) 1:10.542
- 5: Russell (MER) 1:10.543
- 6: Verstappen (RBR) 1:10.567
- 7: Hamilton (MER) 1:10.621
- 8: Tsunoda (RB) 1:10.858
- 9: Albon (WIL) 1:10.948
- 10: Gasly (ALP) 1:11.311
Tall order ahead of Verstappen
So that's official then – if Max Verstappen is to win tomorrow, he'll be just the fourth driver to ever win Monaco starting outside the top five.
The odds are certainly against him.
A brilliant lap from Leclerc at the end
It was only a small improvement by Charles Leclerc , but enough to ensure he got pole ahead of Oscar Piastri.
He's now got the perfect chance to try and finally win on home soil in Monaco. A brilliant performance.
LECLERC CLAIMS POLE AT MONACO 🏁
There it is! A 1:10.270 from Charles Leclerc 's Ferrari takes pole position for tomorrow's Monaco Grand Prix.
Q3: Into the final fight for pole
⏰ 10/12mins: The final two minutes. The final runs. Here's the current top three but that could - and probably will - all change:
- 1: Leclerc (FER)
- 2: Piastri (MCL)
- 3: Russell (MER)
‘Same issues in 5 and 10’
Verstappen reports on the radio he’s got the “same issues in (Turn) 5 and (Turn) 10” on his push lap. Also says there’s a lack of grip through Turn 6 and “it is what it is”.
Yacht Club de Monaco focuses on the future of the yachting industry
TURIN, Italy, May 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — With a fleet where the average age is 23 years, the market currently comprises 10,729 motor yachts and 1,897 sailing yachts. There are 1,166 projects under construction or on order with Italy dominating this aspect on 51.4%, even though the country only represents 40.1% of global production in gross tonnage terms. Superyacht production has doubled in the last decade with 132 in-build. Germany leads on average length of superyachts in construction with 94.4m, followed by the Netherlands on 62m. Yachts customised by their owners represent 63.3% of the global fleet. It is the picture drawn at the Cluster Yachting Monaco which convened a hundred yachting professionals and a fleet of yachts moored in the YCM Marina for its first Open Day 2024. The meeting was a chance to take stock of the sector as it stands and make forecasts for 2030. “The industry must set itself apart in the best possible way. Our Cluster is always cited as a reference and is one of the best in the world. We must keep up the momentum,” began Bernard d’Alessandri, Cluster Yachting Monaco President and General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco.
After a presentation on statistics for the sector in 2024 by Katia Damborsky from Boat International, there were two sessions in the form of panels dealing with yachting’s evolution in the immediate future with a 360° vision of the different players involved and their commitment to sustainability. All delegates also had an opportunity to visit the 15 yachts moored in the YCM Marina, presented by Sanlorenzo, Oceanco, Novamarine, RIB, Riva, Pardo, Saialia Yachts, Baltic Yachts, Dominator Yacht, Costruzioni Navali Tigullio, Palmer Johnson, Overmarine, Feadship and Philip Zepter Yachts.
International trends for 2024 show a marked preference for diesel engines, far outperforming hybrid and diesel/electric engines. The event also discussed the increase in use of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (HVO). Feadship has taken another step towards its goal to produce carbon neutral superyachts by 2030, with the Obsidian, an 84.2m superyacht that can run on a HVO non-fossil diesel fuel. Not to be out done Sanlorenzo is also testing this new clean emission biofuel on the 44m Lammouche.
Optimising hull designs for better fuel efficiency, cleaner more efficient engines, hybrid, diesel-electric, and electric engines, rigid sails, HVO/bio fuels, solar energy, hydrogen / green hydrogen, methanol / green methanol and sustainable innovations are all solutions available now to improve vessel sustainability. What will the sector look like by 2030? A range of panellists attempted to answer this question by making overall projections for the industry. “In my opinion the 360° approach is the most interesting,” observed Artur Poloczanski, Public Relations Director at Sunreef. “You have to know how to optimise a yacht to achieve the sustainability objective.”
On 10th June 2024, Cluster Yachting Monaco members will meet again to celebrate ten years of the association. Founded in 2014 by Bernard d'Alessandri, the Cluster Yachting Monaco is one of the first in the world solely intended for yachting sector stakeholders. It is in line with actions taken by a government-led committee (Conseil Stratégique pour l’attractivité) with the aim being to provide a platform for dialogue with decision-making authorities. Defined as a centre of competitiveness uniting a hundred interdependent organisations and companies working in the same sector, the Cluster has proved to be a unifying force.

“No question, in Formula 1, outside of winning your home Grand Prix, I’d say Monaco is the other really precious, precious event to put on your resume,” says racing great Mario Andretti when asked by Robb Report to comment on the contest’s importance. “Monaco is one of the absolute premier events—look at the tradition it has,” adds the 1978 world champion, who did win his home grand prix but never took Monaco. “I wish I could have had that as part of my trifecta,” he admits, in reference to his other major wins.
Yes, the Monaco Grand Prix is a race like none other: a spectacle fusing the glamour and prestige of a Hollywood gala with pure speed. Nestled into the Mediterranean coast, the Principality itself is a fairy-tale world of sun-kissed cliffs, yacht-filled harbors, and opulent palaces.
Jenson Button, who won the race in 2009, called it the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “Monte Carlo is a place where every driver wants to win,” he said at the time. “But achieving it is so satisfying because you know you’ve conquered one of the toughest circuits in motorsport.” In that regard, the race is a bit of a paradox: In a sport that’s all about speed, this street circuit is both the slowest course on the calendar and one of the most dangerous.
Lewis Hamilton , seven-time winner of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, has stated, “Even though Monaco has the slowest average speed of all the circuits we visit in a season, it always feels incredibly quick.” Hamilton won in Monaco while driving for McLaren-Mercedes in 2008, and then at Mercedes in 2016 and 2019. He’s also on record explaining that the dichotomy is “because the acceleration is so rapid and the walls so close: There really is no room for error.”
From the hairpin to the tunnel section, every corner presents a unique challenge, testing the limits of both skill and courage. The record-holder, with six victories, including five consecutive first-place finishes from 1989 to 1993, is the late Ayrton Senna , who described a particular qualifying lap around the track in almost supernatural terms.
“At that moment, I suddenly realized that I was going beyond the threshold of consciousness,” Senna once said, adding that while doing his lap he felt as if he was seeing himself from above, with the track as a kind of tunnel.
Although every driver will say that scoring the pole position is almost a prerequisite to victory on a track where overtaking the leader is nearly impossible, history has produced outrageous scenarios time and again. Torrential rainfall, enemy to the drivers hoping for a procession from pole to checkered flag, has often provided the key to success for those whose cars are not otherwise up to it. The rain has written several of the most memorable moments in the race’s epic story, including the event 40 years ago that announced the arrival of Ayrton Senna.
Alain Prost, himself a rising star that year, started from pole position in the rain. But way back in 13th place, the rookie Senna took center stage in an uncompetitive Toleman. By lap 32 of the 76 projected laps, the Brazilian had climbed up the pack to finally pass Prost and cross the finish line in the lead as the race was red-flagged due to danger. The rules stated that the official classification had to be counted from the last lap during which all cars still running had crossed the finish line—in this case the 31st lap—and so Prost was named the winner.
The Senna legend and the Prost-Senna rivalry, however, had just begun. The two drivers would be the only winners of the race from that year until 1993, the last time that the Brazilian participated before his death in a crash the following season.
The only other driver to make Monaco his sole Formula 1 victory was Jarno Trulli, who won at the 2004 edition in a Renault. In that race, Trulli started from pole and led to the end. But he had always prepared well for the coveted event, saying that the best method for learning the track was the one that he discovered in his first year there in Formula 3. He awoke at 4 a.m. on the Tuesday before the race so that he could jog around the route when there was no public traffic.
“In Monaco, more than any other circuit, you want to know everything about all the bumps and curbs, any change in the circuit, in the tarmac,” said Trulli. “You really want to have a good idea of where you are going to put your wheels.”
After Senna, the drivers with the second most victories are Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher with five each, followed by Prost with four, then Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Nico Rosberg, and Lewis Hamilton—all with three victories. Fernando Alonso, currently driving for Aston Martin, came close last year to taking his third victory in Monaco, finishing second. Some drivers, though, dislike the track, the best known among them being Nelson Piquet, who some say famously compared racing in Monaco to flying a helicopter around your living room.
Fittingly, the overall spectacle of the Monaco contest has been the setting for some of the most memorable scenes in John Frankenheimer’s 1966 film Grand Prix , starring Yves Montand, James Garner, and Eva Marie Saint.
For sponsors, Monaco represents an all-important opportunity to hobnob with the glitterati and showcase their brands amidst the extravagant setting of Monte Carlo. And for many of the drivers who have chosen to live in this tax haven—such as Hamilton, Verstappen, and Sergio Perez—it’s also a home race of sorts. That’s truly the case, though, for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who was born in Monaco and has lived there all his life.
“It’s the same roads that I took by bus to go to school when I was younger,” said Leclerc to the media last Sunday. “Now it’s in a Formula 1 car. So that makes it extra special for me. So I’m really looking forward to it.”
Yet despite the legendary status of the Monaco Grand Prix, questions remain. Can a race so at odds with modern safety standards continue to exist? Formula 1, forever pushing boundaries, struggles to reconcile its ever-evolving technology with the limitations of Monaco’s streets. And one of the most impressive aspects of the race disappeared when the hybrid engines arrived in 2014 and the cacophony of the power trains no longer bounced quite so strongly off the buildings and hills around the city.
“I went to the historic race and the best thing about it is, for me, sound,” said Lando Norris last week, referring to the event that features classic racing cars before the Formula 1 teams arrive. “The sound needs to be improved,” he added, commenting on the new Formula 1 cars compared to those of yesteryear.

The yacht-spotter's guide to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix
Every year, Monaco’s Grand Prix pulls in some of the fleet’s finest superyachts for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled F1 action and A-lister events in the heart of the principality. Yachts moored stern to the circuit have a premium vantage point over the cars tearing around the track, while superyachts at anchor can enjoy all the Formula One buzz with the added benefit of privacy and seclusion.
BOAT takes a closer look at the superyachts spotted near the event...
Renaissance
Length : 111.9m Builder : Freire
Renaissance is the largest private yacht built in Spain and one of the world's most expensive charter yachts . Which is quite the feat for Freire, a commercial shipyard that has built only one private yacht in the past. With 7,200GT to play with, her list of amenities include a sushi bar, a dedicated hair and beauty salon, a ballet bar with a mirror for stretching and two cinemas – one indoor, one outdoor. The owner's deck is described as "palatial" and comes with its own a media room, a lounge with bar and dining and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi for six.
Length : 52.1m Builder : Sanlorenzo
Spotted pulling into port with a Bugatti on the aft, Seven Sins is the perfect yacht for soaking up the Formula One action. She is part of Sanlorenzo's hugely successful 52Steel series, with features including a glass-bottomed pool on the aft that floods the beach club below with light. Her palatial interior design offers plenty of space for kicking back and watching the races in a more relaxed setting and her sharp Officina Italiana Design exterior is sure to attract attention in Monaco harbour.
Length : 90m Builder : Benetti
Lionheart was launched in 2016 as the shipyard's largest build to date, though she was surpassed by the 107-metre Mar (ex Lana ) four years later. She was the third yacht to be ordered from Benetti by the same owner, Sir Philip Green. While her curvy exterior and private balconies will be visible to those visiting Port Hercule this weekend, interiors have always been shrouded in secrecy. It is known that Stefano Natucci collaborated with Benetti on the exterior design and Green & Mingarelli Design is responsible for the interior design.
Fountainhead
Length : 87.8m Builder : Feadship
Created with family use in mind, Fountainhead features a recreation room and library that can be converted into cabins to supplement the six existing guest cabins and owner's suite. She was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design , though "a signature blend of art, antiques and aesthetics" by Belgian artist Axel Vervoordt are also displayed throughout. Leisure highlights include a fully-equipped gym with health club, a contra-flow swimming pool and a tender garage that houses wave runners, kayaks, surfboard and diving equipment, among others. The superyacht is named after the famous novel by Ayn Rand.
Coral Ocean
Length : 72.6m Builder : Lürssen
A World Superyacht Award winner, Coral Ocean earned the judges' commendation following a sensitive, multi-million refit that converted the heritage vessel into a successful charter platform. All deck spaces were upgraded, including a reimagined sundeck that now houses a glass-sided spa pool, sunbathing and observation deck and a central deckhouse with a television lounge, dining area and bar. Coral Ocean was one of the largest launches of 1994 and her secrecy for the first two decades of her life solidified her as an icon for the German shipyard. She is owned by Australian garbage waste disposal giant Ian Malouf.
Length : 72m Builder : Lürssen
Delivered in 2006, Titania (ex Apoise ) was put up for auction by her owner in 2010 and was snapped up for €33.75 million – roughly half the estimated value – by Phones4U tycoon John Caudwell. He then went on to refit, lengthen and rename the superyacht, which he discusses in an exclusive interview with BOAT International . Designed by Espen Øino and Francois Zuretti , the Lürssen was the star yacht in season six of The Crown and is a popular charter yacht. No wonder, as she sports a beach club that can be converted into a nightclub, an onboard masseuse and beautician and an impressive array of watersports – including a waterpark and a 12.7-metre slide.
Length : 70m Builder : Royal Denship
Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi , a trawler-style expedition yacht that has since been refitted to varying degrees. The most recent work was done at Lusben in 2022 and involved a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large, wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well. Design highlights include a black-tiled spa (with heated massage table), a cinema, a barbecue and dining area that turns into a disco and a dining room that doubles as a conference space. An elevator serves all decks.
Length : 67.5m Builder : Icon Yachts
The flagship of the Dutch shipyard, Loon (ex Icon ) is now anchored in Port Hercule where she is likely to cause another social media sensation . She was delivered in 2010 to a design by RWD , with clean, contemporary interiors by Studio Linse . A raised main deck pool is one of her many highlights with two panels of glass that filter natural light into the beach club below. A bar, gym, massage room and sauna are also found at this level. Loon was sold to a new owner in April 2023, after which she joined the charter fleet with IYC .
Length : 66m Builder : Oceanco
AHS has undergone numerous name changes (she was sold and renamed mostly recently in January ) but started life as Dilbar in 2005. A successful charter yacht, she can be easily distinguished in port by her classic canoe stern. An interior by the late Alberto Pinto provides accommodation across eight cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite with its own lounge and adjoining private office. Other highlights include an outdoor cinema, a beamy sundeck with 19,000-litre pool and a helipad that transforms into a sun lounge.
Length : 49.9m Builder : Zepter
The Croatian yard's first superyacht offering, JoyMe is usually berthed in Cap d’Ail but has been sighted in Monaco for the past two Grands Prix. She’s one of the most recognisable yachts at the event, with her custom red and white exterior and unusual eye motif – said to be the eyes of the commissioning owner’s daughter. Leisure highlights include a Pop Art-inspired interior by Marijana Radovic , a sundeck with a 3.5-metre Jacuzzi and a lower deck arranged with a gym, Finnish sauna and Hammam spa with sea views. Accommodation is across five cabins, including the "VIP deck" owner's cabin which has a walk-in bathroom, lounge and private sunbathing platform on the bow.
Length : 45.2m Builder : Royal Hakvoort
The most recent delivery on the list, Milele is one of this year's World Superyacht Award winners . According to the judges, she stood out thanks to her "incredible build quality” and surprising spaces on board. Most notable of these is the innovative foredeck garage, which stores a submarine and crane, and has a full entertainment suite with a large television screen built into its hatch. She was designed inside and out by Omega Architects with an efficient hull design by Van Oossanen Naval Architects .
