Learn to sail in the UK
Whether it is a refresher course, a taster weekend or a full RYA course, we offer a comprehensive range of courses in the UK.
RYA Training (from competent crew to yachtmaster)
The Solent, in our view, represents the ideal starting point, thanks to good accessibility from many parts of the country but also protected waters enabling sailing in most conditions plus a great range of options to sail to, from the Isle of Wight to attractive harbours like Poole and Weymouth to the West, or Chichester and Portsmouth harbour to the East. Many of our training trips are across the channel to France and the Channel islands.
Weekend Trips
Embarking Friday evening from 6pm or by 08:30 Saturday morning our weekend tuition includes refresher courses, taster cruises and the RYA start yachting course. We will tend to sail fairly locally, visiting the isle of Wight, one of the marinas in Portsmouth harbour with Poole being the furthest we go. Disembarkation is typically by around 4pm on Sunday afternoon.
Weekly Tuition
Our 5 day sailing courses venture further afield with cross channel or coastal voyages as far as Weymouth and Poole. These include refresher courses and mile builder voyages and ICC courses as well as the standard RYA courses including Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and preparation for the Yachtmaster exam.
Our 7 day courses are usually mile builder voyages and preparation for Yachtmaster as well as our special Tidal Conversion Course
Private Tuition
Ideal for families or groups of friends or for those whi simply wish to ensure a bespoke course entirely tailored to your needs tuition with private yacht charter will ensure you have your own instructor. Depending on your previous experience, you could undertake any of the RYA courses or simply concentrate on whatever areas have been identified as your further training needs.
General Course Information
Sailing is a social sport and a sailing course can be an ideal holiday or short break and a way to make new friends. Our RYA instructors have all been chosen for their sociable approach as well as their expertise to make the time you spend with us as much fun as it is a learning experience. The waters of the Solent and English Channel represent and an ideal area to start yachting and learn to sail for both novice and advanced students alike, offering varied conditions and tides, plus an excellent selection of lights, buoys , and situations that will enhance your learning experience as you progress through the RYA sail training programme. Our sea school ethos has always been to put safety first and we hope to empower each of our students by offering simple and patient instruction, in order that they may gain confidence in their own ability as they learn how to sail and to take their first steps as skipper or to undertake longer offshore coastal passages.
*RYA THEORY COURSES & LOGGED EXPERIENCE – IMPORTANT NOTE:
To attend (and pass) the RYA Day Skipper Practical Assessment, it is EXPECTED that you are fully conversant with the theory knowledge required to the level of Day Skipper. It is therefore strongly recommended you complete the Day Skipper shorebased course beforehand. This can be completed in a single full-time week long course or an online “open ended” internet based course with an RYA registered training centre.
Likewise, if you wish to progress through the RYA scheme, from Day Skipper to Coastal Skipper to Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore and Ocean, you should also, as prerequisites, complete the matching theory courses.
We, at Sail Charter International, can advise you of a number of RYA Training Centres which can provide your shore based/theory requirements, whether in a single week course or online – just ask for information.
Additionally, it cannot be stressed enough that LOGGING of your experience (courses and miles sailed in all/any capacity) is absolutely necessary, as your logbook will be required to be presented for inspection prior to any qualification assessment, from Day Skipper upward to Yachtmaster Ocean.
Tidal Refresher Course
Aimed at those who have trained or gained their experience in non-tidal waters such as the Mediterranean, this course aims to develop and enhance a skipper’s ability and experience in tidal waters ensuring both a theoretical understanding of basic tidal theory and implications for navigation such as tidal heights and streams, as well as acquiring the practical skills required to safely handle a yacht in tidal waters. This includes mastering techniques such as ferry gliding when maneuvering a yacht in close quarters as well as tidal implications for passage planning.
Pre-course Requirements

The RYA Training Scheme and Certificates of Competence
Elite Sailing is an approved Royal Yachting Association Training Centre and we are inspected annually by the RYA to ensure that our methods, equipment and standards are maintained at a high level. Our training follows the RYA Sail Cruising scheme – a world-renowned sequence of courses leading from basic crewing up to professional Yachtmaster. Certificates are awarded for satisfactory completion of each course and, for those who want a formally recognised “ticket”, there are independent examinations for issue of “Yachtmaster Coastal” and “Yachtmaster Offshore” Certificates of Competence.
The “RYA Cruising Log Book”, available in most chandlers and directly from us, explains the system in detail and provides a record of your training and experience. Here we will try to show you how the various courses relate to each other, and what competence you should have after each course – particularly in terms of ability to crew on other yachts, charter, or get the “International Certificate of Competence” which in many European countries is now required by law. The system is flexible and you can start at any level appropriate to your experience. If you have any doubts we will be happy to give you objective advice.

Great school, fantastic skippers, and easy to reach from London! Really can recommend the weekend courses if you are busy working.
- Leonard Wossnig
Friendly but highly professional sail training, both shore-based and practical. Fred and the team are now my "go-to" RYA trainers of choice. After all, if you learn to sail in the Medway and Thames Estuary, in British weather, in February and March, you can probably sail anywhere!
- Gareth Draper
Positive: Communication, Professionalism, Quality, Value 100% recommended, good people dedicated, learnt a lot from Paul my instructor and Fred the boss.
- Richard Collis
Absolutely amazing experience. I took part in 2 days Milebuilder. Well prepared. It’s a pleasure to learn from such experienced people like Steve who was a skipper. Highly recommend and hope to return soon.
- Piotr Kurzawa
I've just come back from my first weekend for competent Crew and wow what a great experience. I definitely think I’ve got the sailing bug now. I was nervous before I started the course due to never sailing before. Also, I thought I'd be meeting people completely different from myself, and I wouldn't gel I am covered in tattoos and talk like someone from the cast of Harry brown 😂but everyone was sooo cool and the skipper big Steve was a proper lad and a great teacher! Spoke to us through the whole process, and he also allowed us to make mistakes and build our confidence to get it right. 👌

Average Cost to Learn to Sail in the UK: 3 Budgets
No matter what your budget is, whether you're on a tight budget or have a bit more wiggle room, you have options to learn to sail in the UK. Let's find out the average cost of sailing courses in the UK suitable for each budget and what to expect of it.
For low-budget learning, take up group lessons for just £100-£300 for a beginner course. If you can spend more, take private sailing lessons for £400-£600 for 10 hours, or purchase a sailing course package for £500-£700. If money isn't an issue, you can opt for luxury sailing lessons which cost around £1,500-£2,500.
For low-budget learning, you can also opt to join sailing clubs for as little as £50 - £150 per year. Some clubs have beginner sailing courses as part of their membership package which is a cheap way to learn quickly. Let's see what each budget buys you, and how to get your money's worth.
- One of the best ways to learn to sail in the UK is to purchase a starter boat, usually a used dinghy to practice in.
- On a medium budget you can take certification courses offered by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), and you can either choose to take the RYA Day Skipper course or RYA Competent Crew.
- While owning a yacht can be a great way to learn to sail, it is not the most cost-effective option. Aside from the price of the boat itself, you will need to take into account additional maintenance costs as well.
Learning How to Sail in The UK Based on 3 Budgets
Learning how to sail on a low budget.
Below is a breakdown of the average cost of learning how to sail on a tight budget:
The table above shows that even if you are on a tight budget, you can still learn to sail without breaking the bank by doing the following:
1. Join sailing clubs
Joining a sailing club is a great way to get on the water and learn how to sail without breaking the bank. Most sailing clubs offer affordable membership fees, which will give you access to their boats and facilities. Some clubs may even offer beginner sailing courses as part of their membership package.
2. Look for group sailing lessons
If you are looking for more structured sailing lessons, there are many options available to you. You can find sailing schools that offer courses for beginners at a reasonable price.
These courses will cover the basics of sailing, including boat handling, sail trimming, and safety procedures. This is cheaper than private lessons since the average cost for group lessons is around £200-£300 for a weekend course.
3. Rent an equipment
Renting sailing equipment can be a cost-effective way to get on the water and learn how to sail. Most sailing schools and clubs will offer equipment rental, including boats, sails, and life jackets. This is a great option if you are not ready to invest in your own equipment yet.
Learning how to sail with a medium budget
Below is a table showing the average cost of learning how to sail with a medium budget:
If you have a bit more money to spend, you can consider doing the following:
1. Avail of private sailing lessons
Private sailing lessons allow you to receive one-on-one instruction tailored to your needs and skill level. They are a good option if you want personalized attention and a flexible schedule.
The cost of private sailing lessons ranges from £400-£600 for 10 hours, depending on the instructor's experience and location.
2. Consider getting sailing course packages
A sailing course package includes the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Level 1 and Level 2 . These cover the basics of sailing and prepare you for independent sailing.
These courses are usually taught in groups and taught over a weekend or several weekdays. The cost of a sailing course package ranges from £500-£700, depending on the location and the sailing school.
3. Purchasing a starter boat
A starter boat is a small, used dinghy that you can use to practice your sailing skills. It's a good option if you want to sail without renting a boat every time.
The cost of a starter boat ranges from £500-£1,000, depending on the size, condition, and age of the boat. While this may seem like a significant investment, it can be a cost-effective way to get started with sailing.
When purchasing a starter boat, consider also the cost of maintenance and storage. You'll also want to make sure you have the necessary equipment, such as a life jacket, before setting sail.
4. Avail of certification courses
For those who want a more structured approach to learning to sail, certification courses are a great option. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) offers a range of courses for sailors of all levels, including those on a medium budget. You can get certification for the following:
RYA Day Skipper: The RYA Day Skipper course is an advanced sailing course that teaches you how to plan and execute coastal passages and handle a yacht in various conditions. It's a good option if you want to sail solo or charter a boat. The cost of this course ranges from £500-£800.
RYA Competent Crew: The RYA Competent Crew course is a great option for those new to sailing. This course covers the basics of sailing, including navigation, boat handling, and safety procedures. The cost of the course varies depending on the location and duration, but you can expect to pay around £500-£700.
Learning how to sail with a high-end budget
The table below shows the cost range of what you can expect to pay to learn sailing if you have more than enough budget:
If money is not a problem, try doing the following to have more upgraded learning:
1. Opt for luxury sailing lessons
This is a high-end option that offers a premium sailing experience with luxury accommodations and personalized instruction. These courses are usually taught on high-end yachts and may include gourmet meals, spa treatments, and other amenities.
The cost of a weekend luxury sailing course ranges from £1,500-£2,500 , depending on the location and the level of luxury offered. Some have prices around £2,000-£5,000 for a weekend course.
2. Consider owning a yacht
Owning a yacht is a high-end option that allows you to sail solo and enjoy the freedom of the open seas. A new, mid-sized yacht can cost anywhere from £50,000-£100,000, depending on the size, brand, and features.
A 40-foot luxury yacht , for example, costs around $150,000 (around £116,000), but this doesn't include extra costs such as registration, taxes, insurance, maintenance, and storage. So while owning a yacht can be a great way to learn to sail, it is not the most cost-effective option.
3. Hire personal trainers
Another high-budget option is to hire a personal sailing trainer. A personal trainer can help you improve your sailing skills and achieve your sailing goals. The cost of hiring a personal trainer costs around £50-£100 per hour so for 20 hours, the average cost will be £1,000-£2,000.
4. Take into account moorings and marina expenses
If you own a yacht, you will need to find a place to keep it. This can be expensive, especially if you want to moor it in a marina.
Marinas offer more services such as electricity, water, and security, but they come at a premium. The cost of docking a sailboat in a marina in the UK ranges from £1,000-£5,000 per year, but it can escalate to up to £5,000- £10,000 per year.
If you're looking for cheaper mooring rates around the UK, you might find this article helpful.
Other Costs to Consider To Learn to Sail
Below are other costs to consider beyond the cost of the course itself:
Costs for club membership
If you plan on sailing often, you may want to consider becoming a member of a sailing club. Membership fees can vary, but range from £100 to £500 per year. Some clubs require an initiation fee, which can be anywhere from £50 to £500.
As a member of a sailing club, you'll have access to the club's boats and facilities, as well as the opportunity to take part in club events and races. This can be a great way to meet other sailors and improve your skills.
Costs for purchasing sailing equipment
If you're planning on sailing on your own or with friends, you'll need to buy sailing equipment. You can find the complete list of essential sailing gear in this article.
The cost of equipment can vary depending on what you need, but here are some estimated costs:
Costs of maintaining your own boat
Once you have your own boat, you'll need to consider the cost of maintenance. This can include things like cleaning supplies, replacement parts, and repairs. Here are some estimated costs:
Keeping your boat in good condition ensures your safety and the safety of others on the water. Regular maintenance can also help extend the life of your boat. Annual maintenance costs of sailboats typically range from $2,000 - $3,000 or around £1,549 - £2,324.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Sail a Yacht?
Whether you’ve finally got your hands on the boat you’ve always dreamed about, or you’re doing a bit of research before a holiday, one thing you’ll need to know before you set sail is which qualifications you need. In the UK, you technically don’t need a sailing license to take your own yacht out on the water, but it’s a bit more complicated than “anyone can sail a boat”. We break down the specifics in more detail below.
What Sailing Novices Need to Know
It might seem unlikely, but in the UK, you’re not legally obliged to have any qualifications or a sailing license to sail a boat, providing you own it.
However, if you want to charter a yacht owned by a rental company, you do need a sailing qualification, and it’s generally the RYA Day Skipper that yacht companies require. So, as long as you’re sailing a boat you own, you don’t need any yachting experience or credentials to get out on the water.
Sailing Without Qualifications or Experience: What are the Risks?
Despite the lax laws, it’s ill-advised to take a yacht – even one you own – out on the water without any sailing experience, unless you’re accompanied by someone who knows the ropes. Weather conditions can change very quickly, and even the best marine navigation tools are no good to a sailor without the knowhow to understand them.
Not only is there a chance you’ll get out of your depth and damage the boat, but you could risk injuring yourself, anyone else on board, or even those around you in the water. On top of that, if you’re sailing without a boat license in the UK, and you’ve taken out sailing yacht insurance , or yacht and boat insurance , there’s a strong possibility the policy will be void – so make sure you check the terms and conditions of your cover.

Yachting Qualifications and Required Skills
If you want to graduate from landlubber to qualified sailor, there are a few different credentials you can look into, depending on where you’re going to sail.
As we mentioned, the RYA Day Skipper Practical course is the first requirement for a standard bareboat charter. This is available to take at different centres all over the country, but it has to take place over five days, cover 100 miles and include four night hours on a sailing yacht.
But before you can take the Practical, you’ll also need the RYA Day Skipper Theory to get your navigation and theory knowledge up to scratch.
Alternatively, you can take the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which is also offered by the Royal Yachting Association.
Functioning almost like an international boat license, the ICC enables you to provide evidence of your experience and competence when you’re sailing in another country.
That said, the ICC may not comply with the maritime legislation of the specific country you’re planning to visit, so it’s worth checking whether it’s a valid yacht license in that location before you embark on getting the qualification.
Wherever you’re planning to go, getting the right insurance policy to cover the vessel – be it a rental or a boat you own – is always a smart move. Take a look at the extensive range of cover available from Admiral Yacht and get the peace of mind you need before you set sail.
Do I need a qualification to sail a yacht?
No, in the UK it’s completely legal to sail a boat or a yacht without a license. However, if you don’t have much yacht experience in the UK, and you’re not with someone who does – this is ill advised. Plus, you’re unlikely to be covered by your insurance policy in the event of an incident if you don’t have a boat license.
Do I need a license to sail a yacht in the UK?
No, in the UK there’s no law that states you need a license to sail a yacht. That said, some insurance providers may not cover a yacht which is sailed by someone inexperienced or unlicensed.
How do you become a yacht captain?
Yacht captain is a highly skilled paid position, and to achieve it, you’ll likely have to start at the bottom and work your way up through several different roles on ship. You’ll also be expected to have undertaken certain training courses, and get your RYA certification.
How do you get a yacht license?
Getting a boat license in the UK usually costs somewhere between £30 and £60. But before you can get your license, you need to pass an exam set by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) which tests you on both practical and theoretical matters.

Sailing Qualifications
To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.
The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.
For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .
RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .
For Seychelles, the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.
For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.
For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.
If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?
Sailing Levels
Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.
Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.
Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Top questions
Can we learn to sail as a family.
For families wanting to take part in a flotilla, you can add an instructor to your flotilla yacht on the Ionian flotilla in Greece. This is a great way for families to learn to sail together but remember the instructor will not look after young children and you will have to allocate a cabin for the instructor. This is not a formal RYA course so no qualification is gained but it is ideal for those with less experience who want to take part in the flotilla from the offset.
Beginners will need a 6-day flotilla course . This course is designed to take students with little or no experience to the level that they can skipper a yacht within our flotilla under the guidance of our lead crew. Plan a second week sailing with the flotilla, practising your new skills, or return later in the season.
More information on these courses can be found on our Learn to sail on flotilla page.
If you want to gain an RYA qualification , you can have exclusive use of the tuition yacht at the RYA Recognised centres in Aegina (Greece) , Gibraltar, Sibenik (Croatia) and Dubai . For RYA courses a maximum of 5 students can be onboard, but some students can do Day Skipper course while others do Competent Crew course and some need not take part in any course. The course is not suitable for children under 12.
What are the option for couples to learn to sail?
Couples willing to share a yacht with other students can share a tuition yacht in Gibraltar, Greece or Croatia. If you don't want to share or there are 2 couples, you can have exclusive use of the tuition yacht. For RYA courses only a maximum of 5 students can be onboard, but some students can do Day Skipper course while others do Competent Crew course and some need not take part in any course.
Beginners will do RYA Competent Crew course which provides a general introduction to yacht cruising. You will be shown how to tie knots, steer the yacht, handle the sails, moor up, use the anchor, basic navigation and how to be a welcome and useful crew member.
To do your RYA Day Skipper practical course you will need at least 5 days crewing experience on sailing yachts and have either completed the Day Skipper shore-based course or have a good knowledge of basic navigation. This practical course gives you the chance to take charge on short passages under instruction with advice and help from the instructor. You'll also get plenty of chance to practice mooring up in many different situations. By the end of the course you should have enough experience to skipper a yacht in a safe and seamanlike manner on short daytime passages.
If you want to learn on flotilla in Greece, beginners will need a 6-day flotilla course but if you just need to brush up your skippering skills you may only need a a 3-day flotilla course. These courses are designed to take you to the level that they can skipper a yacht within our flotilla under the guidance of our lead crew. Plan a second week sailing with the flotilla, practising your new skills, or return later in the season. As you have your own yacht, why not invite another couple along to share the cost?
What about singles?
Singles are welcome on the RYA courses run by the RYA Recognised Training centres in Gibraltar, Greece and Croatia. You will share a tuition yacht with other students (maximum 5 students per yacht).
Bear in mind that you will need a competent crew if you want to charter a yacht in the future so why not bring a friend along to learn how to crew.

Setting out on the sea, chasing the sun, discovering new lands and reaching out to the furthest corners of foreign oceans might sound like a ‘wild’ dream. These fantasies manage to conjure up an image of adventure, quest and romance. Classic Sailing
Classic Sailing is one of the more popular destinations for novice sailors and beginners. Recognised by the RYA, it offers a long list of courses from practical sailing lessons and competent crew courses to day skipper lessons and the Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. You’ll be able to choose from a number of subjects, even ones that have nothing to do with sailing such as taking the best sunset pictures!

With more than 15 years of experience and being an RYA training centre, it teaches a variety of dinghy sailing courses. You can learn all the basics of dinghy sailing with the Level 1 course, the basic skills Level 2, or try the Seamanship and Spinnaker courses. Moreover, there are courses specifically designed to meet the needs of adult and junior learners.
Elite Sailing
Elite Sailing is one of the most sought-after training centres in London. Regardless of the qualification or the lack of it, there is a course designed specifically for you. How to Sail a Yacht: The Beginner's Guide to Yachting
Posted by: GJW Direct | Feb 9, 2022
How to sail a yacht: A beginner’s guide
Sailing a yacht isn’t, unfortunately, something you can master simply by reading an article. Like anything worth learning, it takes hard work, perseverance, and passion. There are, however, things you can do to prepare yourself before you take your maiden voyage. Here are our top tips for beginners looking to learn how to sail a yacht.
Talk to experienced sailors
The first step on your sailing journey should be to learn from the masters. If you’re not yet sure how to get started or want some insider tips, experienced sailors can help put you at ease. Make sure to ask questions and keep notes – you never know when that advice might come in handy.
Learn the basics
Before you even step aboard a yacht, there are some boating basics including words and terminology you should be aware of. This terminology may refer to parts of the boat that you’ll be responsible for operating or monitoring or may be vital safety or geographical information. To get you started, we’ve broken down the basics below
Yachting terminology
Port = Left of the yacht Starboard = Right Bow = The front of the yacht– the pointed end Stern = The back of the yacht – the wide end Main sail = The big sail Jib = The small sail at the front of your yacht Mast = The main beam holding up your sail Boom = Pole running at a right angle from the mast Line = Rope used on board your yacht Knots = The metric used to measure your yacht’s speed and wind speed
There are plenty more terms you’ll need to get your head around, if you need more information – check out this handy A-Z guide. If you want to learn more about the types of yacht , and how much a yacht costs check out our guides.
Be a passenger
The best way to learn other than sailing is to be a passenger on board a yacht. While you’re still learning, get on the water as much as possible with more experienced sailors, observe them to understand the dynamics of a crew, how they handle challenges, and how you can apply that to your own sailing. You’ll also be able to see how all that terminology you’ve learnt works in practice and why it’s important to know before you set sail.
Get involved with your local yachting club
Once you’re ready, one of the best ways to get started in learning how to sail a yacht is to get involved with your local sailing or yachting club. They’ll be able to assess your current knowledge and competencies and set out a plan to get you out on the water. You’ll also be able to meet like-minded people and link up with potential future crew members. Want to find out more? Visit the Royal Yachting Association’s website to get started.
Preparing for your first voyage
Before you get on board, make sure you’re ready for your voyage – that means wearing the correct clothing – waterproofs and hats if required – and especially stocking up on suntan lotion if the weather outside looks warm. Read back your notes, and keep in mind everything you’ve learnt so far – but also be prepared for it all to go out of the window once that first wave hits!
Setting sail
On your first voyage, you’ll be with more experienced sailors who can coach you as you take off. Once you’ve stepped on board, your skipper will assign tasks. It’s vital that you listen to your role and understand what tasks you must take on during the voyage.
Before you set off, you’ll raise the main sail. At this point, the boom might swing from side to side so watch your head! Then, as you cast off, you’ll raise the jib which will help you control direction as you start sailing. Now you’re on the water, you’ll start to learn terms including trimming and tracking, which are methods of controlling and manipulating your sails to adjust speed and direction according to wind conditions. Now, let your sailing adventure commence!
