Sean Baker's 'Anora' wins Palme d'Or, the Cannes Film Festival's top honor

S ean Baker's “Anora,” a comic but devastating Brooklyn odyssey about a sex worker who marries the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch, won the Cannes Film Festival's top award, the Palme d'Or.

The win Saturday for “Anora” marked a coronation for Baker, the 53-year-old indie filmmaker of “The Florida Project " who used iPhones to make his 2015 film “Tangerine.” It’s also, remarkably, the fifth straight Palme d’Or won by specialty distributor Neon, following “Parasite,” “Titane,” “Triangle of Sadness” and last year’s winner, “Anatomy of a Fall.” Baker accepted the prize with his movie’s star, Mikey Madison, watching in the audience at the Cannes closing ceremony.

“This, literally, has been my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years, so I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with the rest of my life,” said Baker, laughing.

But Baker, the first American filmmaker to win the Palme since Terrence Mallick in 2011 with “The Tree of Life,” quickly answered that his ambition would remain to “fight to keep cinema alive." The director said the world needed reminding that “watching a film at home while scrolling through your phone, answering emails and half paying attention is just not the way — although some tech companies would like us to think so.”

“So I say the future of cinema is where it started: in a movie theater,” said Baker, who dedicated his award to all sex workers “past, present and future.”

The awards were chosen by the nine-member jury led by Greta Gerwig, who told reporters she was “forever changed as a filmmaker because of this experience.” Gerwig praised “Anora” as having the feeling of classical cinema, saying it felt like an Ernst Lubitsch or Howard Hawks film that lead in unexpected directions.

While “Anora” was arguably the most acclaimed film of the festival, its win was a slight surprise. Many expected either the gentle Indian drama “All We Imagine As Light” or the Iranian film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” to win. Both of those films also took home prizes.

It wasn't the only jolt of the closing ceremony, though. Before George Lucas was given an honorary Palme d'Or, his old friend and sometimes collaborator Francis Ford Coppol a appeared to present it to him, reuniting two of the most pivotal figures of the last half-century of American moviemaking. Coppola, who earlier in the festival premiered his self-financed sci-fi epic “Megalopolis,” called him his “kid brother.” Lucas called Coppola “a big friend and a brother and a mentor.”

“I'm just a kid who grew up in a vineyard in Modesto, California, who makes movies in San Francisco, with my friend Francis,” said Lucas. “It's definitely a different world. I've actually never made a film in Hollywood as a director.”

“All We Imagine As Light,” about sisterhood in modern Mumbai, won the Grand Prix, Cannes' second-highest honor. Payal Kapadia's second feature was the first Indian in competition in Cannes in 30 years.

Afterward, Kapadia urged a wide understanding of Indian cinema, saying “there's amazing work going on in our country.”

“Not just Bollywood,” said Kapadia.

The jury awarded a special prize to Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig ," a drama made secretly in Iran. Days ahead of the film's premiere, Rasoulof, facing an eight-year prison sentence, fled Iran on foot. His film, which includes real footage from the 2022-2023 demonstrations in Iran, channels Iranian oppression into a family drama. The Cannes crowd met an emotional Rasoulof with a lengthy standing ovation.

Coralie Fargeat's body horror film “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore as a Hollywood actress who goes to gory extremes to remain youthful, won for best screenplay.

“I really believe that movies can change the world, so I hope this movie will be a little stone to build new foundations," said Fargeat. “I really think we need a revolution and I don't think it has really started yet.”

Some thought Moore, who attended the awards ceremony, might take best actress. But that honor instead went to an ensemble of actors: Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz for Jacques Audiard's “Emilia Perez,” a Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who transitions to a woman. Gascón, who accepted the award, is the first trans actor to win a major prize at Cannes.

“This award is not just for me. It’s for all people who are fighting for themselves and their rights," Gascón told reporters. “We’ve been insulted, denigrated, subjected to a lot of violence without even knowing why. I think this is award is so much more than anyone could imagine.”

Explaining the jury's unusual choice of giving best actress to an ensemble, Gerwig said each performer was a standout, “but together they're transcendent.” “Emilia Perez” also won Cannes' jury prize, giving it a rare two awards at a festival where prizes are usually spread around.

Best actor went to Jesse Plemons for Yorgos Lanthimos' “Kinds of Kindness.” In the film, three stories are told with largely the same company of actors. Plemons, a standout in several chapters, didn't attend the closing ceremony.

Portuguese director Miguel Gomes won best director for his “Grand Tour," an Asian odyssey in which a man flees his fiancée from Rangoon in 1917.

“Sometimes I get lucky,” shrugged Gomes.

The Camera d'Or, the prize for best first feature across all of Cannes official selections, went to Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel for “Armand,” starring “The Worst Person in the World” star Renate Reinsve. Tøndel is the grandson of Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman and Norwegian actor Liv Ullman.

Last year’s top winners in Cannes went on to considerable arthouse success and awards-season runs through the Oscars. That included the Palme winner “Anatomy of a Fall” and the Grand Prix winner “The Zone of Interest.”

Whether this year’s Cannes lived up to that lineup was a regular conversation topic during the festival. But it was a notably eventful Cannes not just for the some of the films — including “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An America Saga” — that screened but for other surrounding dramas.

After stalling for years in France, the #MeToo movement gained momentum ahead of the festival following allegations by Judith Godrèche against two prominent French filmmakers. She brought her short “Moi Aussi” to the festival.

The wars in Gaza and Ukraine were sometimes referenced in press conferences and in subtly symbolic ways on the red carpet. Festival workers, seeking better protections, protested during the opening night ceremony. The Olympic flame, ahead of its arrival in Paris for the summer games, stopped by. Honorary Palmes were also given to Meryl Streep and the Japanese anime factory Studio Ghibli .

Cannes Yachting Festival 2024: Port Canto will host a new marina for boats up to 12 meters

Minimal Logo

With only eight months left until the opening of the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 , this edition is set to introduce a series of exciting innovations that will redefine the visitors’ experience, aiming to further consolidate the Festival’s position as one of the most prestigious yachting events worldwide.

Already recognized as the “ number one ” in-water boat show in Europe, the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 will bring many novelties to visitors and industry professionals. The transformation of Cannes’ Vieux Port, initiated this year and scheduled until 2026 , has garnered significant attention, paving the way for various innovations that enhance the Festival even more.

However, the most surprising development is the creation of a new marina at Port Canto , dedicated to motorboats of smaller size, ranging from 8 to 12 meters . This bold yet necessary move brings smaller-sized boats to the Cannes Yachting Festival. The new marina, spanning over 1,700 square meters with over 300 meters of quayside, will be positioned between the Sailing and Brokerage & Toys areas, accommodating 170 units – 150 in the water and around twenty on land, with rigid or semi-rigid hulls. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to admire a selection of outboard motors suitable for boats of these dimensions.

Cannes-Yachting-Festival-2024-Port Canto

Another interesting innovation is the opening to the public of sea trials for small motorboats. Thanks to motorized pontoons, visitors will have the unique opportunity to experience these boats firsthand, adding an interactive and engaging element to the Festival.

This initiative, in addition to overcoming the logistical challenges of the ongoing work at Vieux Port, will allow visitors to take a complete tour of the harbor, exploring nearly 340 boats covering a wide range of sizes and categories. In particular, 120 new boats over 10 meters, 170 power boats of 8 meters, and approximately 50 used yachts larger than 24 meters will be on display.

brokerage

«2024 represents a year full of challenges for the Cannes Yachting Festival. The works in the Vieux Port have an impact on our show. The situation is gradually becoming clearer and, thanks to working closely with everyone playing a role in Cannes, we are making progress on setting up this edition – explains Sylvie Ernoult, director of the Cannes Yachting Festival – The new marina located in Port Canto, mainly dedicated to 8- to12 metre motor boats, will give incredible visibility to this boat segment, attracting new visitors. I would like to reassure our exhibitors as well as our visitors about the quality of the 2024 show and the offer available. Our teams are working hard to put on a stunning 47th edition! »

Additional improvements at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 also include the introduction of new services: an additional restaurant spanning over 450 square meters with a capacity of 130 guests, a dedicated entrance for exhibitors , and a renovated VIP Club that we look forward to exploring.

Did you know

  • Trivia Anya Taylor-Joy only has about 30 lines of dialogue in the film. Speaking to the New York Times, Taylor-Joy said that she would often spend months on set without having spoken one line, explaining, "I've never been more alone than making that movie. I don't want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard. I do want to 100% preface this by saying I love George and if you're going to do something like this, you want to be in the hands of someone like George Miller . But he had a very, very strict idea of what Furiosa's war face looked like, and that only allowed me my eyes for a large portion of the movie. It was very much 'mouth closed, no emotion, speak with your eyes.' That's it, that's all you have." She added, "there's one scream in that movie, and I am not joking when I tell you that I fought for that scream for 3 months. With George it's a long game." Miller revealed the reason for Furiosa having little dialogue was simple - for him, movies should be fast. He believes that dialogue slows them down.

Monologue : Prologue - 45 years after the collapse, a young Furiosa is taken from her family. She will devote the rest of her life to finding her way home. This is her odyssey.

Is Jacqueline Fernandez Attending Cannes Film Festival 2024?

By Debmitra Chatterjee

Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez is expected to appear at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. She is scheduled to walk the illustrious red carpet to represent a high-end vehicle brand. This will be the second time the actress is marking her global presence in the realm of cinema and fashion.

The Cannes Film Festival serves as a global stage where cinema, fashion, and celebrities come together. It also offers a platform for artists to showcase their talent and style. With Fernandez’s imminent arrival, excitement builds for yet another spectacular display of elegance and glamour on the iconic red carpet.

Jacqueline Fernandez confirms walking the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival 2024

In a conversation with ANI, the 38-year-old actress expressed her enthusiasm. She stated, “I am super excited to go to the Cannes Film Festival once again this year and I cannot wait for it. It feels great to represent the Southeast Asian diaspora at a global level, and it’s an honor to walk the prestigious red carpet where many legends have already walked.”

Fernandez’s return to Cannes marks a notable moment in her vast career. Notably, the actress graced the festival’s esteemed red carpet back in 2015. Reports from that year suggest she was invited by the Queen of Malaysia. She further accompanied her for the grand premiere of Michael Fassbender’s Macbeth. Additionally, rumors are also of her attendance at Naomi Campbell’s 45th birthday party on a private yacht. However, there is no official confirmation from the actress or her team on this.

Joining Fernandez in this year’s Cannes debutantes are actresses Kiara Advani and Sobhita Dhulipala. They are also set to make their mark alongside industry stalwarts such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aditi Rao Hydari. Additonally, Deepti Sadhwani has already graced the festival’s red carpet in a stunning orange ensemble.

As the event unfolds, audiences worldwide eagerly await the sight of Jacqueline Fernandez, as she takes her place among the luminaries of the film industry at Cannes 2024.

CANNES, France (AP) — The Cannes Film Festival is hallowed ground in cinema but understanding its unique landscape can be confounding.

The Côte d’Azur festival, which kicked off Tuesday, is a 10-day ballet of spectacle and film where even the photographers wear tuxedos, standing ovations are timed with stopwatches and movies tend to be referred to by the names of their directors — “the Almodóvar,” “the Malick,” “the Coppola.”

From the outside, it can seem mad. From the inside, it can be hardly less disorienting. But grasping some of Cannes’ quirks and traditions can help you understand just what is unspooling in the south of France and what, exactly, a Palm Dog is.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is underway. Here’s what to know:

  • Festival diaries: AP Film Writer Jake Coyle is in Cannes, France, reporting on the festival . Follow along with his behind-the-scenes diaries .
  • How it all works: We broke down the festival’s unique landscape , lineup , prizes and what’s up with those long standing ovations.
  • What to expect: #MeToo upheaval in France , potential strikes and protests, George Miller’s “Furiosa” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “ Megalopolis, ” all have Cannes buzzing.
  • The Palm Dog: Messi is in attendance . But who will win the coveted (but unofficial) Palm Dog?
  • Photos: See red carpet highlights from week one.

WHY DOES CANNES MATTER?

The short answer is that Cannes is the largest and arguably most significant film festival, and few care more deeply about the art of cinema than the French. This is where cinema was born and it’s where it’s most closely guarded. It’s not a coincidence that to enter the Palais des Festivals, the central hub, you must climb 24 red-carpeted steps, as if you’re ascending into some movie nirvana.

Cannes is also singularly global, attracting filmmakers, producers and journalists from around the world. It’s a little like an Olympics for film; countries set up their own tents in an international village. Because Cannes is also the largest film market in the world, many who come here are trying to sell their movies or looking to buy up rights. Deal-making, though not quite the frenzy it once was, happens in hotel rooms along the Croisette, aboard yachts docked in the harbor and, yes, on Zoom calls.

But aside from being a beacon to filmmakers and executives, Cannes is a draw for its shimmering French Riviera glamour. Since the days of stars like Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot, Cannes has been renown as a sun-kissed center stage for fashion.

HOW OLD IS CANNES?

Originally called the International Film Festival, Cannes was born in the lead-up to World War II. Venice had launched the first major film festival in 1932, but in 1938, fascist influence on Venice was pervasive. The French government in 1939 chose the tourist destination of Cannes as the place for a new festival — though because of the war, the first edition wasn’t held until 1946. This year’s festival is the 77th edition.

HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE ‘CANNES’?

Many people say the name of the French city and its eponymous festival wrong. Here’s what you should picture in your head: A can of soup. The pronunciation is closer to “can” than it is “con.” And definitely not several cans of soup – the “s” is silent.

WHAT IS IT LIKE ON THE GROUND?

The hive of activity is the Palais, a massive complex by the sea full of cinemas with names like Buñuel, Bazin and, the granddaddy, the Grand Théâtre Lumière. This is where the red carpet runs in Cannes, nightly hosting two or three world premieres beneath a glass canopy flanked by rows of photographers. Festival cars ferry stars and directors who are ushered down the carpet and up the steps. Unlike most movie premieres, there are no reporters on the carpet.

Filmmakers and casts instead face questions from the media the day after their premieres, at a press conference preceded by a photo call. The press conferences can be atypically newsy, too; after Danish director Lars von Trier declared “I am a Nazi” at a Cannes press conference in 2011, he was named “persona non grata” by the festival for years.

Interpreters translate live for headphone-wearing reporters. Inside the Palais, bleary-eyed attendees are treated to gratis espresso.

Down the Croisette, the oceanside, palm tree-lined promenade of Cannes, there are regal old hotels like the Carlton and the Martinez from where festival attendees flow in and out, interviews might be happening on balconies as autograph-seeking fans gather outside in throngs. After-parties are typically held in clubs across the Croisette, by the beach.

WHO ATTENDS?

Unlike public festivals like Toronto or SXSW , Cannes is industry-only and largely out of reach for most moviegoers. That doesn’t stop the desperate, tuxedo-clad ticket seekers who hold signs outside the Palais on the chance someone has an extra, or the photo-takers who stand on small ladders near the red carpet.

Cannes is rigorously hierarchical, with a system of color-coded badges regulating access. If you hear about a film being booed at Cannes — even Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” was famously jeered before winning the Palme d’Or — it’s usually at a press screening.

The premieres, largely attended by industry professionals, are where the prolonged standing ovations take place. But this, like many things at Cannes, is a bit of stagecraft to boost the mythology. After the credits role, a cameraman rushes in, with his footage fed live to the screen. He goes down the aisles, giving the audience a chance to applaud for the director and each star. No one is just cheering for a dark movie screen.

WHAT DOES ‘IN COMPETITION’ MEAN?

Cannes hierarchy is in the lineup, too. Attention focuses most on the films “in competition”: usually around 20 movies competing for the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top award. Past winners include “Apocalypse Now,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Parasite.” Last year, it went to Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.” Winners are chosen by a jury of nine that changes every year. This year’s is presided over by Greta Gerwig.

Jury president Greta Gerwig, second form left, poses with jury members Omar Sy, from left, Lily Gladstone, Nadine Labaki, Ebru Ceylan, Kore-eda Hirokazu, J.A. (Photo by Vianney Le Caer/Invision/AP)

Competition is only one section, though. Many high-profile films might play out of competition, as “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is this year. Un Certain Regard gathers a lineup of original or daring films. First and second films play in the sidebar Critics’ Week. There are also midnight selections and the recently launched Premiere sidebar, which also takes some overflow for films that didn’t fit into competition. Restorations and documentaries play in Cannes Classics.

And down the Croisette, separate from the official selection, is the Directors’ Fortnight or the Quinzaine, a parallel showcase launched in 1969 by a group of French filmmakers after the 1968 Cannes was canceled.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PALM DOG?

There are many other prizes, too, even an unofficial one created by journalists called the Palm Dog (sadly, not the Palme D’Og), for the best canine in Cannes. Last year, that honor went to Messi, the “Anatomy of a Fall” pooch.

Messi the dog poses for photographers upon arrival at the awards ceremony and the premiere of the film 'The Second Act' during the 77th international film festival, Cannes, southern France, Tuesday, May 14, 2024. (Photo by Daniel Cole/Invision/AP)

Created in 2001, the annual award and its spinoff categories is decided by a jury of reporters. Past winners have included Uggie from “The Artist” (2011) and Sayuri, who played the heroic pit bull in “Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood” (2019).

As for the reigning champ, Messi captivated the carpet on opening day this year, in town again as a correspawndent of sorts for French television.
