Build Specification

10 features included with every kraken, one piece hull and integral zero keel.

All Kraken’s comprise of a one piece hull and integral Zero Keel which houses a sealed lead ballast bulb.

The hull lay up is built using 17-22 layers of composite engineered fabrics bonded together by vinyl-ester resins. The general hull thickness is a minimum of 15mm. Aramid fibre composites (Kevlar) is also used in all impact areas, the bow stem, the front of the keel and the keel base.

The hull topsides incorporate 25mm closed cell foam, the FRP foam sandwich which extends from 40cm (16″) above the waterline to deck level. This structure improves insulation and overall hull form rigidity. A Kraken’s hull and structures exhibited no flexing.

ALPHA™ Rudder System

The rudder and steering system is the most vulnerable element of any yacht, in recognition of this, the Kraken engineering and design team have developed the world’s safest rudder and steering system.

The rudder is fully protected and supported by a full length skeg with an integral stainless steel beam, which has at its foot the first rudder bearing. The 3 ¾” (82mm) rudder stock has a second (main) bearing at its centre as it passes into the hull at the transom. This bearing is accessible and removable from the inside of transom. Even at sea!

The rudder stock has a removable third bearing at the top inside the stern lazarette. The rudder itself, comprises an integral stainless steel armature, which is welded to the stainless steel rudder stock. It is then finished and faired using FRP/vinyl-ester. 

Solid crash zone at bow waterline

A heavily reinforced ‘solid crash zone’ below the anchor chain locker, incorporating high density closed cell foam with substantial reinforcements in aramid fibres extends from above the waterline to 40cm below it. This solid area runs through to the first sealed bulkhead providing maximum collision protection.

Structural frames and stringers

All longitudinal and latitudinal structures are individually bonded in during the hull layup stages with no prefabricated structural components . The video below explains how the structural frames and stringers work on a Kraken Yacht.

All bulkheads are vacuum infused FRP with 25mm structural foam core. No plywood is used. There are two watertight sealed bulkheads forward, one between the anchor locker and the forward lazarette and a second one between the forward lazarette and the interior. A further watertight, sealed bulkhead at the stern divides the interior from the aft lazarette.

The structural bulkheads are fully bonded into the hull stringers & frames.

Deck Structure

The deck is vacuum infused FRP using composite fibres and vinyl-ester resin with a structural foam core. This provides high levels of rigidity and insulation. 

The deck structure is single-skin FRP around the base of all deck fittings.

The outside finish of the deck is panelled non-slip gelcoat with Flexiteek side decks and cockpit sole as standard. 

Integral Kraken moulded safety bulwark

All Kraken have an Integral moulded safety bulwark with concave internal surface for superior deck safety at sea.

Saloon/coach roof windows

Ultra-high impact-resistant laminated glass is used in the wrap-around saloon windows and port lights so that accidental damage will not result in water ingress to the interior.

Hull Finishes

Standard hull gelcoat colour is Signal White. Many colour options available at owners choice. 

Double line boot top in Alwgrip to owners colour choice.

3 x coats of primer and sealer applied below the waterline before standard antifoul in dark grey, other colour choices available.

An original Cor D. Rover exterior features the extensive use of proprietary carbon fiber across the upper superstructure to reduce overall tonnage and lower the yacht’s center of gravity for increased stability on the move. Boasting sleek lines and a classic-contemporary feel, the yacht combines the best characteristics of trawler yachts, such as high bulwarks and a radar tower, with elements usually found on luxury motor yachts, such as sumptuous outdoor lounge space, lavish interiors and a breezy flybridge.

The teak-lined flybridge tapers towards the rear to create an al-fresco sun deck with a sofa and pair of sun-loungers, while positioned towards the wider foredeck there is a U-shaped leather sofa surrounding a teak table. There is also room up here for an L-shaped wet-bar with a barbecue, another forward sofa and a single-seat upper helm station. On the main deck level there is a sheltered aft-cockpit with a transom sofa and breakfast table, steps down to a full-beam, hydraulic swimming platform, and a cocoon-style C-shaped sofa built into the superstructure out on the foredeck.

Interiors are entirely crafted in-house by Azimut , and come with bronze accents, polished carbon fiber, lacquered walnut and light ash oak for a timeless and sedate feel. There is a choice of two different layouts, Classic or Navetta, though both feature a comfortable L-shaped sofa and seven-seater dining table to port. On the classic option there is an extra set of cabinets to starboard, and an open plan galley kitchen that seamlessly connects to the dining area. If you choose the Navetta package, however, the cabinets will be replaced by a loveseat, while the kitchen and pilothouse are separated from the salon for private food preparation and secluded navigation.

Below deck there is room for 8 overnight guests across a bunk berth, an en suite twin, an en suite master stateroom by the bow, and an en suite owner’s stateroom positioned amidship. The owner’s room is certain to be the most in-demand sleeping space, and boasts a king-sized island bed, an armchair, a loveseat or wardrobe, double closets and a sparkling bathroom with a walk-in shower and lover’s sinks. There is also a separately accessed crew quarters at the rear of the boat with room for two and its own private head.

The Azimut Magellano 66 is powered by a pair of upgraded Volvo D13 V-drive engines for top speeds of up to 23 knots, while a second-generation double-chine, Dual Mode, semi-displacement hull designed by Pierluigi Ausonio offers superb long-distance seakeeping. With a fuel tank of 4500 liters and an ocean-going range of more than 900 miles at cruising speeds this is a superb yacht for spending weeks on end island hopping, while a complete Raymarine navigation and monitoring system promotes easy and intuitive navigation.

The construction, fit and finish and hardware on the Dirigo were all designed to be a notch up from the rest of the Sabre product line. Notably the custom cast stainless deck hardware, the detail in the interior joiner work--even a full Miele appliance package in the galley and the Sub Zero's on the bar deck.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The layout and interior accommodations are both very well thought out AND executed. The cockpit offers an excellent entertaining platform with an gorgeous high gloss aft deck table and room for six.  The bar deck aft of the salon offers refrigeration, ice maker, wine storage, glass and dry storage, and a sink, which more than support a bar and preparation/service of light meals and drinks--and direct connection to both the aft deck and the salon.

The salon features an over sized u-shaped sofa with an ingenious table. It can be extended to it's max length and put at table height for dining, or retracted and lowered electrically for an unimposing cocktail table.  Opposite the sofa is a 50" TV on a lift, flanked by two full size, comfortable club chairs. There is plenty of storage throughout the salon and into the helm deck. 

Excellent 360 degree visibility is achieved from the two Stidd captains chairs. Visibility over the bow at cruise speeds in any condition is remarkable thanks to an excellent hull design as well as the Humphress and the trim assist feature through IPS.

To starboard and down a few steps is a true chef's galley. A full sized refrigerator, an oven, microwave, dishwasher, appliance garage and ample drawer and cabinet storage.

The sleeping accommodations include a guest berth, a VIP midship and a full beam master aft. The guest berth forward offers the optional scissor berth layout which allows the center island pedestal berth to be electrically split into a v berth function to create flexility, for kids, guests or crew, or sit in in its closed position as a queen. The shower is to port and the head to starboard is en suite but also opens into the companion way to function as the yacht's day head.  The day head is beautifully designed and finished with high gloss counters, cherry and holly soles, leather wrapped stainless grab bars and thoughtful lighting.

Aft of the forward cabin is the midship VIP. It offers double doors to open up an atrium like feel with the galley down arrangement. It has an en-suite head with shower finished in upgraded tile and glass doors.

Down three steps from the galley is a vestibule to the master that offers full size stacking washer and dryer, an AV cabinet and storage. 

The master cabin is arguably the best in it's class. The size and features rival those on 75'+ yachts. She offers a king size bed, a sofa, a walk in closet, and multiple drawers and storage cabinets. The finish is elegant with ample lighting on dimmers, subtle wall coverings and tasteful soft goods. The head offers a large tiled shower, a beautifully finished vanity, a large hamper and an oversized commode. Natural light permeates the cabin while the reflective qualities of the water coming through the hull ports enhance the ambiance of the room.

SEATTLE YACHTS BUYS ALASKAN BRAND, LAUNCHES RE-INTRODUCTION OF LEGENDARY LINE OF LONG-RANGE TRAWLER-STYLE YACHTS

Jupiter, Florida – Peter Whiting, the Managing Partner of Seattle Northwest Yachts, LLC, announced today that his firm has purchased the Alaskan brand and is in the process of contracting to build a contemporary version of the legendary line of Defever-designed, long-range, trawler-style yachts.

Speaking at Seattle Yachts' U.S. east coast office in Jupiter, Florida, Whiting said the re-activation of the Alaskan brand will begin with an Alaskan 66 Mk II that will sport a wide-bodied 19'6" beam hull and interior accommodations developed to meet the exacting tastes and requirements of today's market.

According to Whiting, the new Mk II is being designed and engineered by prominent naval architect, Stephen Seaton, known worldwide for his trademark trawler-style yachts. Said Whiting,

"Stephen Seaton is without doubt the most appropriate naval architect in the market segment to carry the modernization of the Alaskan line forward. We've been working with Steve for several years in the development of our Northwest line, and in that time, we've grown exceptionally confident in his keen abilities and insights when it comes to long range, ocean-going yachts."

Whiting also announced that Seattle Yachts of Anacortes and Seattle, Washington, and more recently Jupiter, Florida, has contracted with well-known marine industry consultant, Phil Friedman, of the Port Royal Group, Fort Lauderdale, to manage the development and construction of the new Alaskan line, as well as to provide overall new-build management to the firm’s clients.

Whiting pointed out that Friedman, a former CEO of Palmer Johnson Yachts, has in-depth experienced in the construction of luxury yachts and small commercial craft in the 20- to 60-meter range.

Friedman explained that the company’s “Alaskan redux” embodies the central principles of "value-engineering" — an approach that delivers maximum product value per unit cost, not by skimping on materials, build technique, or outfit, but by concentrating effort and investment on those elements of the yacht that are key to fulfilling its mission. Friedman commented that,

“Our primary objective for the new Alaskan line is to deliver a rugged, seaworthy, comfortable, and good looking long-range cruising yacht at a compelling price. The key to being able to do that is to understand which features genuinely matter and which marketing-driven bells and whistles add cost without contributing significantly to utility or enjoyment."

The company will introduce it plans for the new Alaskan line to interested yachtsman at the upcoming Palm Beach International Boat Show, March 22 – 25, at Seattle Yachts’ in-water display.

The Bugatti Niniette 66 will be the first model of a series of yachts from 50 feet to 80 feet. The Bugatti Chiron-inspired yacht will reach a top speed of 44 knots.

The yacht has a large open deck and uses materials like modern carbon fiber, leather, and blue morta oak wood. Behind the helm station is a combination of a sun pad, Jacuzzi and champagne bar.

Timur Mohamed, CEO of Palmer Johnson, explains:

The yacht has a slim main hull with two sponsons on both sides to improve stability and roll at high speeds.

“This construction also allows for a wider build compared to other yachts in this class, thus offering the experience of a much larger yacht,” adds Mohamed.
