My family has been using Vaughts Yacht Sales and Hull Cleaning for over 10 years. We have purchased 3 boats via the yacht sales side of their business and they have cleaned bottoms on a dozen different pieces of floating stock varying from a 12' float to a 76' power boat. They have also successfully retrieved dropped tools and provided clear underwater photography of repairs or potential issues. Whenever I've called they have answered or responded in an appropriate amount of time. Rich, Andrew, Geoff and Bill either greet you with a smile or answer the phone with a friendly tone. This is a review regarding bottom cleaning service. I called the owner Rick to question whether the bottom cleaner was able to clean a 50 foot boat in under 10 minutes, after I saw the diver under our boat for less 10 minutes. He responded with vulgarity. I went so far as to ask him why he's using profanity and vulgarity when I am the one upset and feel he's ripping me off and at this point I am still calm and never did I swear. Rick is not the kind of person I'll ever do business with based on how he treats customers.

His hull cleaning service is sub-par, shoddy accounting/billing.

Just ok. Rich is easy to work with but the quality of accounting and cleaning is just ok.

I used Vaught's for a recent boat purchase and am really happy with my decision! Bill McD was incredibly helpful with not only the negotiation on the purchase price, but also recommending surveyors and repairmen for the inevitable post-purchase fixes. I couldn't be happier with their service and would recommend Rich and Bill to anyone!

So grateful to Raphael and Colin, employee/divers who helped my rowing partner out of the water this morning. They not only helped her right the boat but fished her oars, hat and water bottle out of the water. They also assisted her in getting her boat back to the beach. If they are an example of the type of employees there, then I would not hesitate to highly recommend them!

We're longtime boat owners and have owned a number of boats. We've been using Vaught's Yacht Service for many years. They've taken care of our boats from a 13' RIB to a 50' Ocean Alexander and also the pontoon floats at our dock which lift the RIB out of the water. They're honest, reliable and reasonably priced. The owner, Rich Vaught, is an experienced, honest and reputable yacht broker we've also relied upon for the purchase and sale of a number of our boats. He and his Vaught's Yacht Service are trusted, valuable resources. This sounds just like a paid advertisement but it's not.

Super nice! I dropped my iphone with waterproof case into the bay and was determined to get it back! I called these guys randomly to see if there was any chance that they would swing by and look for it with me since they have underwater scuba gear. I am sorry I don't recall their names, but the man who answered the phone sent a guy to help me that same morning. Within 2 minutes the diver found the phone! So exciting, and my phone still works just fine! Not only do these guys clean and service boats, but they do good deeds and help their neighbors with random search and recover missions! THANK YOU so much!

Sparkman Stephens 67' - Chubasco

This is one of the grand dames of the SoCal sailing fleet. Built by Wilmington Boat Works of California for William L. Stewart she was launched in 1939. Through three owner's she's been a major player in the Southern California racing scene her whole life. Her race record is extensive.  The 67-foot sailing yacht is a direct descendent of Dorade, Stormy Weather, and Santana. CHUBASCO is one of the finest vessels of her type and is considered one of the best of Sparkman & Stephens designs. See History Page for more info on sisterships and Sparkman Stephens designs.

REFIT 2017-2019

Chubasco underwent some structural and cosmetic upgrades, throughout the years the salt water has corroded some of the bolts and degraded some of the wood structural members. Planking was replaced as well as most all frames. A new engine was installed, this added more horse power and also lessened her carbon footprint.  The instrumentation was upgraded to the current  B&G  and satellite phone technology in preparation for the 2019 racing season.

Chubasco competed in numerous races during the 2019 Southern California Sail Boat Racing Season with excellent results. The rest of the season is highlighted by the 50th Anniversary Transpacific Yacht Race.

Chubasco Spanish for Sudden Storm; A chubasco is a violent squall with thunder and lightning encountered during the rainy season - perhaps a short lived storm.

Personal Life

I  was raised by a single mother from the age of 6 months in Los Angeles  county.  My mom worked two jobs, one as a legal secretary and the other  as a waitress to support me.   My mom met and eventually married a  lawyer named Greg Larson when I was in the 4th grade.  It was the first  time I had a father in my life.  Greg turned out to be the most  influential person in my life.  Greg is my dad and I am the man I am  today very much because of him.

I am very passionate about the  welfare of children; I have two youngsters of my own.  My daughter  Charlotte was born in March of 2011.  My son Jack was born in November  of 2016.  I waited to start having a family because I was afraid I  wouldn’t be a good father because of all the time I spent working on and  trying cases.  So, I waited until I knew I had the time to do a good  job and be present for my kids.  Getting married and having kids is the  best decision I ever made.  I love being a husband and father, it is the  best part of my life.  In my spare time I love the ocean, sailing and  surfing.

Greg stewart.

  Greg Stewart is an experienced sailor with 40 years of sailing and racing experience on both classic and modern designs. He came up through the ranks as a crew and boat keeper in the late 70’s and 80’s and was able to sail in many of the major races by age 25. Today, by day Greg is a senior Naval Architect at Nelson/Marek Yacht Design in San Diego where he has worked continuously since 1986. Over this time he has been involved with numerous designs of all types. His close attention to detail and natural ability to interface with others has fostered many successful projects. He is active in his local classic boat scene and also actively campaigns his restored vintage 6 meter Sprig .  His life long interest and experience with classic boats has led to Nelson/Marek being commissioned for consultation and design projects on numerous notable classic yachts including the comprehensive efforts on the Dorade , and spar designs for Santana, Orient and Marilee .  Greg is onboard the Chubasco refit team to lend rating optimization assistance.

JEFF THORPE

Quantum Sails: Jeff is an awesome sailor and has been a Sails Consultant on the West Coast. With many championships to his credit, he is perfect to make sure Chubasco has powerful and efficient sails. Jeff is childhood friends with Co-Owner John Carpenter, both sailing in  the outstanding Leo Robbins sailing program in Ventura.  Jeff works as a sail consultant at the Quantum Sails Pacific loft, giving his clients the attention to detail they need to find the right sails.

Jeff has spent a lot of time racing offshore, with 23 races since 2006 and 17 race wins as navigator. Jeff is a skilled navigator, watch captain and excellent offshore helmsman. Jeff’s offshore racing experience and knowledge of all the traps along the Mexican coast is an invaluable asset.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
