Swiftsure Yachts

Puffin  is a truly exceptional Robert H Perry designed Tashiba 36. It sounds cliché, but they truly don’t build them like they used to. When Puffin was launched, the Ta Shing boatyard was at the top of their game with high quality materials and truly over the top details. Her interior finish exemplifies the incredible teak joinery characteristic of Ta Shing, with louvered locker doors, laminated door frames and a beautiful salon table. And it’s all in fantastic condition. Large hatches and white laminate overhead and cabin-sides provide a bright contrast to the homey feel of the interior. Her two stateroom, one head layout (with separate shower stall) and a spacious “Perry” galley is ideal for a liveaboard cruising couple.

Interior Accommodations:

Puffin’s interior is beautifully finished in teak, characteristic of the high-quality workmanship produced by the Ta Shing boatyard.

Beginning forward, the master stateroom features a large V-berth with split mattress & access forward to the divided chain locker. There is tremendous storage below and outboard as well as two large hanging lockers to port. A large overhead hatch with screen plus three opening ports provide ventilation in this area.

Next aft to starboard a head with separate shower stall that is far more spacious than boats even much larger. There is a stainless steel vanity sink in a marble countertop, hot/cold pressure water plus a brass manual pump and generous storage. A Dorade vent and opening port provide ventilation in the bathroom area.

Amidships is the very comfortable salon space with straight settee to port & L-shape settee to starboard. To starboard is a gorgeous inlaid teak table on an adjustable bronze pedestal base. The water tank is located below the starboard settee and there is storage under the port settee, starboard settee return, behind seatback and outboard against the hull. The nav station is aft facing at the aft end of the starboard settee. There are four opening ports and the signature teak butterfly hatch with screens that provide light and ventilation for the main cabin area.

The aft stateroom is to starboard adjacent to the companionway. There is a large double berth, generous storage and ventilation from two opening ports a Dorade vent.

Opposite to port is a beautiful seagoing galley with exceptional storage and counter space. There is a massive refrigeration and freezer compartment with top loading access to the freezer and top and front loading access for the fridge. Two opening ports, a Dorade vent and the companionway hatch provide ventilation in the galley area.

The companionway is on centerline with removable steps and box for access to the engine. There is a storage locker behind the companionway steps. The companionway entry has removable louvered teak doors plus a set of teak drop boards.

Bluewater Sailboat – Tashiba 36

The Bluewater Sailboat Tashiba 36, along with its smaller twin, the Tashiba 31, are the last of designer Bob Perry’s full keel double-enders; he considers them his best. Many of the innovations Perry achieved with his Baba 40 design are carried over into this boat, which has characteristics that many sailors appreciate. They’re quick, close-winded, rigid, and balanced.

Ta Shing, the top Taiwanese boatbuilder and one of the best quality yards in the world, built the boats. The interior of the yacht has been regarded as “excellent furniture” by some.

The Tashiba 36’s history is connected with the Baba boat line. According to legend, the name “Tashiba” is a play on words that combines the names “Ta Shing” and “Baba.” These boats were created by developer Bob Berg, who gathered together Perry and discovered the boatyard that would become Taiwan’s best. The three-boat lineup of the Baba 30, 35, and 40 proved popular.

When Ta Shing took over marketing and decided to launch their own brand of yachts, the last of these boats, the Baba 40, was renamed the Tashiba 40. To complete the new Tashiba line, two smaller boats were required.

Perry was the ideal choice for the two new boats that became the Tashiba 36 and Tashiba 31 after designing the complete Baba range of boats. They were created in California in collaboration with Perry and Ta Shing’s Taiwanese representative.

The Baba/Tashiba 40, based on the iconic Valiant 40 performance cruiser, was such a significant advance over Perry’s earlier full-keel designs that he chose to further evolve the design. For added stability, the turn to the bilges became even harder. The bows were more refined. The end result was a Bluewater boat that sailed incredibly well; fast and close enough to challenge many fin keel designs.

The hull of the boat is made of hand-laminated fiberglass. The exterior layers are made of water- and thus osmosis-resistant vinylester resin. The interior of the boat can be coated with polyurethane insulation if desired. Ballast consists of a single iron casting encased in fibreglass.

The deck is made of GRP and has an end-grain balsa core. Marine-plywood coring and stainless steel backing plates are utilized in regions where through-deck fittings are fastened.

The boat was also available with a pilothouse and a regular rear cockpit. Rear cockpit types offer a spacious front stateroom and a quarter berth aft, whereas pilothouse models have two large bedrooms, one ahead and one amidship. In addition to the pedestal steering from the cockpit, the pilothouse incorporates an inside steering station. Both models come with a pressurized hot water system and a shower in the head area.

Quick Notes

The Tashiba 36, like many of Ta Shing’s Baba/Panda/Tashiba boats, features black iron fuel tanks that have proven subject to corrosion. These tanks have been changed in many boats, but it’s worth checking. Prices for the Tashiba 36 have remained relatively high, and there aren’t many on the used market.

FURTHER BROKERS COMMENTS:

JESSIE MARIE has been extensively re-fitted and updated by her seller in recent years and which just adds to her very high-quality original build she enjoyed at the hands of the legendary Ta Shing Shipyard in Taiwan, who have been renowned for building such yachts since the yard was established in 1957. With her hand-laid GRP hull, encapsulated elongated fin keel and adjoining trailing rudder, an easily handled cutter rig combined with the beautiful teak interior joinery, she will surely make for a wonderful sea-kindly comfortable cruising boat. JESSIE MARIE has enjoyed two recent re-fits, one in 2017 and the other in 2018, which are listed below in the seller’s comments. In only her third ownership she is now ready to take her fourth owner on many ocean voyages if required or coastal hopping if that is preferred.

SELLER’S COMMENTS:

“Rarely does a truly spectacular boat come on the market and Jessie Marie is definitely one of those boats. Current owner purchased her in March of 2016 from her second owner to participate to the 2018 Golden Globe circumnavigation race, unfortunately he was afflicted by a lower back condition during the summer 2016 Atlantic crossing that caused him to withdraw from the race.

She spent the first 23 years of her life in Chesapeake Bay as a one owner boat. The second owner, purchased her in 2010, cruised her to the Bahamas and in Florida. The boat reached the current owner in pristine condition, and has significantly improved in his ownership. The boat has no history of osmosis. Has copper clad epoxy finish applied in the 90’s.

She was re-fitted and upgraded in Florida in April of 2016 with an eye to the race, making her a world class blue water boat with systems and backup systems that are essential and engineered beautifully, she is ready to circumnavigate in comfort and safety several times. There are invoices in excess of 60,000 US$ for gear and in excess of 30,000 US$ for labour dated between April and May of 2016, available for inspection.

She underwent a second major refit in 2017, when teak deck was removed and all deck fittings re-bedded on a gelcoat antiskid surface, mast removed stripped and repainted, and the deck plan was redesigned with new and upgraded hardware, all tracks were changed and two new ones added. See below for 2017 re-fit.

The Sail inventory is as varied and as good as possible. The woodwork is done to heirloom standards. Jessie Marie would cost a lot to replace and is very sensibly priced for a new owner that wants to sail oceans, cover miles in safety and comfort. The discerning blue water sailor, looking for a safe, strong, seaworthy, exceptionally fitted and maintained blue water boat should have Jessie Marie. She is the Ideal plug and play boat for a serious cruising couple.”

Winter 2018 refit: • New fuel lifting pump for Yanmar • Rebuilt injection pump on Yanmar • New injectors on Yanmar • New Gas Stove • New Raymarine autopilot computer • New L&S hydraulic autopilot ram • Stripped & repainted all outside varnished surfaces • Installed new Seaview instrument console on pedestal • International Antifouling • New Zinc Anodes

Winter 2017 refit: • Removed teak deck, • new deck gelcoat anti-skid, • re-bedded all deck fittings • White awlgrip paint on mast – 3 coats after sandblasting and priming. • new mainsail Antal track, new Antal Hanks and battens on mainsail. • new Antal ST winches on mast • 2 new Antal secondary winches in cockpit. • New jammers on mast, passed all halyards inside mast, so now we have two at the rear, three at the front + staysail halyard, • new electric wiring in the mast, with protection sock. • New steaming and deck flood lights LED • New LED nav lights • new genoa tracks • New genoa tracks on caprails of bulwarks, • rebuilt steering system • new Frigoboat fridge system – water-cooled • new battery charger 220/110 • new Lofrans tigers windlass, • repainted bowsprit • new spinnaker pole track & cart • 2 carbon spinnaker poles, • new spinnaker sock, • new foam in all interior seats • rebuilt gas cooker

BUILDER’S COMMENTS:

“These were designed by Robert Perry. Tashiba is the first in our line of Ta Shing designed and developed yachts, a line of lovely, traditional cruising sailboats.”

Text taken from Ta Shing’s website TA SHING OVERVIEW:

The Ta Shing Shipyard was established in 1957 with, to quote their website; “Let the owners’ dreams come true.”

Once again, to quote their website; “Ta Shing is an experienced and fully customized boat yacht OEM builder, the boat building experience from Shing-Sheng in 1957 and has constructed more than 1,200 boats. The Models been built include Sailboats: Mason, Tashiba, Taswell, Sky, Mystic, Norseman etc, and now building Nordhavn motoryacht/motorsailer.”

They are renowned for hand crafting using high quality materials such as Burmese teak for much of their yachts’ interiors (the quality of-which is a particular feature of the Taswell brand) to create strong, comfortable and easily managed yachts comparable with brands such as; Najad, Halberg Rassy, Malo and Contest.

PRESS REVIEW: “Overview Introduced in 1986, the Tashiba 36 along with its smaller sibling the Tashiba 31 are the last of the full keel double-enders by designer Bob Perry; he considers them his best. The boat shares many of the innovations Perry made with his Baba 40 design and evolves them further to produce a boat with traits all sailors love. They are fast, close-winded, stiff, and well balanced. The boats were built by Ta Shing, the best of the Taiwanese boatbuilders and recognized as one of the best quality yards worldwide. Some have described the interior of the boat as a piece of fine furniture. History The Tashiba 36 heritage is intertwined with the Baba line of boats. It’s said the name “Tashiba” is probably a play of words, bringing together the name “Ta Shing” with “Baba”. These boats were the brainchild of developer Bob Berg who brought together Perry and discovered the boatyard that was to become the best in Taiwan. The three boat line-up of the Baba 30, 35, and 40 became a hit. The last of these boats, the Baba 40, eventually got renamed to the Tashiba 40 when Ta Shing took over the marketing and decided to forge ahead with their own line of yachts. Two smaller boats were required to fill out the new Tashiba line. Having designed the entire Baba line of boats, Perry was the natural choice for the two new boats that became the Tashiba 36 and the Tashiba 31. They were designed together in California with Ta Shing’s Taiwanese representative working closely with Perry. The Baba/Tashiba 40 having been derived off the lines of the legendary Valiant 40 performance cruiser showed such a marked improvement from Perry’s earlier full keel designs he decided to evolve the design further. Perry writes, “The turn to the bilges got even more firm for increased stability. The bows were finer”. The resulting design produced a boat that sailed incredibly well; fast and close winded enough to challenge many fin keel designs. Construction The boat’s hull is of hand-laminated fiberglass. The outer layers employ water and hence osmosis resisting vinylester resin. The interior of the boat is optionally lined with polyurethane insulation. Ballast is a single iron casting encapsulated in fiberglass. The deck is in GRP and cored with end-grain balsa. In areas where through-deck fittings are bolted, marine-plywood is used as coring and stainless-steel backing plates are used. Variations The boat was offered in a pilothouse version as well and the standard rear cockpit model. Rear cockpit models have a large stateroom forward and a quarter berth aft whereas the pilothouse has two large staterooms, one forward and the other midship. The pilothouse has an inside steering station as well as the pedestal steering from the cockpit. Both versions feature a pressurized hot water system with a shower in the head area.” Taken from an extract in Blue Water Boats by W L updated on 20th July 2015

Review of Tashiba 36

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 4JHE diesel engine at 44.0 hp (32 kW), which gives a max speed about 6.0 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 284 liters (75 US gallons, 62 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Tashiba 36 is 1.72, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Tashiba 36 is about 222 kg/cm, alternatively 1245 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 222 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1245 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Ukraine war latest: Moscow accuses West of being responsible for attacks in Russia; two dead in airstrike on major city

At least two people have been killed and more than a dozen injured in a reported Russian attack on Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv. Russia says it sees the US and UK as responsible for recent attacks on its soil.

One person has been killed and another eight injured in a Russian missile attack near the Black Sea port of Odesa, a Ukrainian official has said.

Regional governor Oleh Kiper said five people were being treated in hospital. He posted pictures showing emergency workers near the scene of the strike.

Sky News has not independently verified the report.

Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian missile and drone attacks.

President Vladimir Putin used his meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to "promote Kremlin narratives feigning interest in peace negotiations", analysts at the Institute for the Study of War say.

The pair signed a joint statement yesterday alluding to Russia's support for the China's proposed peace plan and a possible future Chinese-led negotiation to end the war in Ukraine.

In the statement, they claim both countries support a "sustainable settlement" for the "Ukraine crisis".

The ISW said it has "previously assessed" the Kremlin will "continue to use any calls for peace negotiations to feign interest in negotiations" in the hope of undermining Western support for Ukraine.

Moscow also hopes the West will force Ukraine into negotiations with Russia that make concessions on Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ISW added.

'Decisive' relationship

Meanwhile, the institute says, Mr Putin likely views Moscow's relationship with Beijing as "decisive" in his bid to further mobilise the Russian economy and defence industry to support his war in Ukraine.

"Putin and Xi highlighted bilateral trade and economic cooperation throughout their public speeches," the ISW says, adding the Russian delegation includes officials and businessmen.

"The Russian delegation likely aimed to expand cooperation with their Chinese counterparts that will facilitate increased economic ties between Russia and the PRC [People's Republic of China]."

China has previously signalled concerns its economic relationship with Russia may open it up to sanctions, the ISW says, and Mr Putin "likely intends to head off these concerns as the Russian defence industry grows increasingly reliant on the PRC".

Earlier today, we reported how a purported Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery in Krasnodar, Russia.

The blaze has forced an emergency shut down at the facility, owned by Rosneft, two sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters.

According to one source, the drones hit the liquefied petroleum gas production unit while the crude distillation unit remained undamaged.

"There was no black smoke during the fire. That means it was just the gas burning", a source said.

Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported the fire was extinguished, citing local authorities.

The Russian defence ministry said air defences downed 44 drones over the Krasnodar region and six over the Belgorod region.

For context: The Tuapse plant's annual capacity is 12 million metric tons, or 240,000 barrels per day.

It produces naphtha, fuel oil, vacuum gasoil and high-sulphur diesel, and supplies fuel mainly Turkey, China, Malaysia and Singapore.

Most Russians would support an end to the war in Ukraine this week - but only if newly-gained territories were not returned.

That's according to  the independent Levada Centre , Russia's best known pollster, which ran a survey to canvass public opinion on Vladimir Putin and the war.

While 71% would back an end to the war "this week", this figure drops to just 30% if the condition for peace were to return territories.

Since September last year, Levada reports the level of support for the Russian army has stayed at about 75%, with older respondents more likely to remain in favour.

Mr Putin's approval rating appears to be at about 82%, the pollster reports.

However, those aged between 18 and 24 appear less likely to back M Putin, with 77% not approving of his activities as president.

Former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko says no one should trust Vladimir Putin when he says he won't invade Russia's second city, Kharkiv.

The Russian leader does not have an opportunity to capture Kharkiv right now due to Ukraine's defensive forces, he said.

But in Vovchansk, where Mr Poroshenko visited yesterday, the town has been turned into "hell" - with no people or houses left.

"Don't trust Putin. Don't be afraid of Putin," he said.

"I can confirm that our strategy shall be as follows: Ukraine shall win, and Russia, undoubtedly, shall lose."

Moscow says it sees the US and UK as responsible for recent attacks because they are allowing Ukraine to use Western weapons against Russian targets.

The Russian foreign ministry said the UK, US, EU and Kyiv were "playing with fire" over attacks on Russian soil, state news agency Tass reports.

Such actions will not go unanswered, it warned.

"Once again, we should like to unequivocally warn Washington, London, Brussels and other Western capitals, as well as Kyiv, which is under their control, that they are playing with fire. Russia will not leave such encroachments on its territory unanswered."

Earlier today, Russia's ambassador to the UK said the UK was a de facto participant in the war.

This was because it has supplied Kyiv with weapons and shared real-time intelligence, said Andrei Kelin.

The number of victims from a reported Russian airstrike has risen, officials say.

At least two people are now said to have died, with another 13 injured - four of whom are in a "serious condition", regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

It is not clear what the attack targeted, but Mr Syniehubov said those injured are civilians.

Reports had initially claimed one person had died and four injured.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, and the surrounding region have long been targeted by Russian attacks but the strikes have become more intense in recent months.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Moscow of seeking to reduce the city to rubble.

A Ukrainian drone hit another oil terminal this morning, this time in the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, according to sources and footage shared on social media.

The Importpischeprom oil products terminal and Sheskharis oil harbour were struck, with the port shut soon after the attack.

Oil loadings resumed later from Sheskharis, according to industry sources and LSEG data, while activity at Importpischeprom remains suspended.

It came as Russian officials reported another drone attack on an oil refinery, causing a fire in Tuapse, which is roughly 150km southeast of Novorossiisk.

Both are in the Krasnodar region.

Russian oil pipeline monopoly Transneftdid not reply to a request for comment. Its subsidiary, Novorossiisk Commercial Sea Port Group (NCSP), which operates the Sheskharis oil terminal, declined to comment.

Novorossiisk is Russia's largest port on the Black Sea and is a key oil outlet for crude oil and transit in country's south. It also handles grain, coal, mineral fertilisers, timber, containers, food and chemical cargoes.

Four people have been hurt and at least one has died in an airstrike on the city of Kharkiv, according to local officials.

The regional governor says some of those injured are civilians, while it's reported Russia used guided bombs in the attack.

It's not immediately clear what exactly came under attack.

More now on the comments made earlier by the Ukrainian army's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi (see our 10.21am post).

He said he expects fighting to intensify as Russia continues to attack Kharkiv - with Sumy the next possible target, roughly 170km northwest.

Russia's attack on Kharkiv has expanded the area of active fighting by almost 70km, he added, which was designed to force Ukraine to divert stretched resources to the region.

In comments on the Telegram messaging app, he said the main focus of Russia's attack is towards the area of Lyptsi and further east in Vovchansk - as our military analyst Michael Clarke reported earlier (1.27pm).

Mr Syrskyi said Russia attacked early after noticing a change in troops, but they "failed to break through".

He added Ukraine "must prevent further advance" by "inflicting maximum losses with air strikes, missile systems, artillery and tank fire".

Russia-Ukraine war live: Moscow says west ‘playing with fire’ over Ukraine

LIVE – Updated at 15:46

The country’s foreign ministry said the supply of long range weapons to Ukraine by the UK and US had led to an escalation in the conflict.

Russia’s foreign ministry warned the west that it was playing by fire by allowing Ukraine to use Western missiles and weapons to strike Russia and that Moscow would not leave such action unanswered, Reuters reported.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that it saw the hand of the United States and Britain behind a recent spate of attacks and blamed Washington and London for escalating the conflict by authorising Ukraine to use long-range rockets and heavy weapons they had supplied against Russian targets.

“Once again, we should like to unequivocally warn Washington, London, Brussels and other Western capitals, as well as Kyiv, which is under their control, that they are playing with fire. Russia will not leave such encroachments on its territory unanswered,” the statement said.

Putin is seeking to weaponise threat of mass migration, says Estonian PM

Vladimir Putin is seeking to weaponise the threat of mass migration to divide and weaken Europe as supporters of Ukraine struggle to maintain unity to defeat Russia, Kaja Kallas, the Estonian prime minister said on Friday.

“What our adversaries know is migration is our vulnerability,” she said. “The aim is to make life really impossible in Ukraine so that there would be migration pressure to Europe , and this is what they are doing.”

She said Russia had already created the migration pressure through disruption in Syria and in Africa via the Wagner group.

“I think we have to understand that Russia is weaponising migration. Our adversaries are weaponising migration.

“They push the migrants over the border, and they create problems for the Europeans because they weaponise this since with human rights, you have to accept those people. And that is, of course, water to the mill of the far right.”

Russian guided bombs kill two, injure 13 others in Kharkiv

Russian guided bombs killed at least two people and injured 13 others in the northeastern Ukraine‘s city of Kharkiv on Friday, local officials said.

It was not immediately clear what they had been targeting but the regional governor said those injured were civilians, Reuters reported.

“Among the 13 wounded, four are in a serious condition,” governor Oleh Syniehubov said on the Telegram messaging app.

Kharkiv, Ukraine‘s second largest city, and the surrounding region have long been targeted by Russian attacks but the strikes have become more intense in recent months, hitting civilian and energy infrastructure.

A drone attack on Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiisk early on Friday hit the Importpischeprom oil products terminal and Sheskharis oil harbour, sources said and video shared on social media showed.

The port was shut soon after attack but later resumed oil loadings from Sheskharis oil harbour and fuel oil terminal, according to industry sources and LSEG data, Reuters reported.

Oil products loadings from Importpischeprom oil products terminal in Novorossiisk are still suspended, the sources said.

Russian oil pipeline monopoly Transneft did not reply to a request for comment. Its subsidiary, Novorossiisk Commercial Sea Port Group (NCSP), which operates the Sheskharis oil terminal, declined to comment.

Russian diplomat accuses US of ‘playing with fire’ over Ukraine

A top Russian diplomat said on Friday the United States had long since entered into a state of indirect war with Moscow and was playing with fire over Ukraine by behaving in such a way that the situation could spin out of control, Reuters reported.

The comments by deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov in an interview with state TASS news agency reflect growing Russian concern over what Moscow casts as dangerous Western escalation in Ukraine as Russian forces advance in several places.

“We warn that they are playing with fire. They have long been in a state of indirect war with the Russian Federation,” Ryabkov told TASS, referring to the United States.

“They somehow fail to realise that, in order to satisfy their own geopolitical ideas, they are approaching a phase in which it will be very difficult to control what is happening and to prevent a dramatic crisis.”

In case you missed it yesterday, Russia and China announced they will deepen their already close military ties, as Vladimir Putin met Xi Jinping in Beijing on his first foreign trip since being inaugurated for a new term as Russia’s president.

It is the latest in a string of statements and signals that the warm relationship between the two countries is as strong as it has ever been.

Xi’s red carpet welcome for Putin – a man he has described as his “best friend” – comes after a whistle-stop tour in Europe where the Chinese president faced tough questions on his country’s economic and political behaviour. On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced tariffs on $18bn (£14bn) of Chinese goods , angering Beijing.

In a press conference shortly after their meeting on Thursday, and before the two leaders sat down for a celebratory concert to mark the 75th anniversary of formal China-Russia relations, Putin praised the “warm and comradely” talks with Xi. In return, Xi said the friendship between China and Russia was “everlasting” and had “become a model for a new type of international relations”.

Russia’s defence ministry said on Friday that its “North” military grouping had taken control of 12 settlements in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region in the last week.

President Vladimir Putin said earlier on Friday that Russian forces advancing in Kharkiv region were creating a “buffer zone” to protect Russian border regions, but said capturing the city of Kharkiv itself was not part of Russia’s current plan.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine itself it’s emerged president Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed a law allowing some convicts to serve in the army.

A separate law increasing fines for those not opting to join the war effort was also signed, an entry on the Ukrainian parliament’s website showed, according to Reuters.

UK is a de facto participant in Ukraine war, claims Russian ambassador

Russia’s ambassador to Britain has described the UK government as a de facto participant in the Ukraine war because of the weapons it was supplying to Kyiv – and said it was also sharing real-time intelligence too.

Andrei Kelin, Russia’s ambassador to Britain, made the comments to Russia’s Rossiya-24 state TV channel, Reuters has reported.

Afternoon summary

President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russian forces advancing in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region were creating a “buffer zone” to protect Russian border regions, but said capturing the city of Kharkiv was not part of Russia’s current plan. Putin, who made the comments at a news conference during a state visit to China, said Russia’s recent thrust into the Kharkiv region was a response to Ukrainian shelling of Russian border regions such as Belgorod, Reuters reported.

A massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea early on Friday caused power cutoffs in the city of Sevastopol and set a refinery ablaze in southern Russia , Russian authorities said. The drone raids marked Kyiv’s attempt to strike back during Moscow’s offensive in northeastern Ukraine , which has added to the pressure on outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian forces who are waiting for delayed deliveries of crucial weapons and ammunition from Western partners.

Russian forces have advanced 10 km into Ukraine’s Kharkiv region in one area but the situation has “stabilised” as of Friday, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said as cited by RBC-Ukraine media outlet. “Today, our defence forces have stabilised the Russians where they are now. The deepest point of their advance is 10 km,” Zelenskiy told journalists.

Ukrainian forces shot down all 20 drones Russia dispatched in an overnight attack, the Ukrainian military said on Friday. The drones were shotdown over the regions of Kharkiv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Odesa and Mykolaiv, Reuters reported. Russian forces have increasingly targeted Kharkiv region this spring, intensifying the aerial attacks and mounting a new offensive in the border areas forcing Kyiv’s outnumbered troops to try to hold the line on a new front.

Russian forces expanded the area of active combat by almost 70 km by launching their offensive in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine’s army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Friday. Syrskyi said Russia launched the offensive to force Ukraine to throw additional reserve brigades into fighting. He added that he expected fighting to intensify as Kyiv troops are also preparing to defend in northern region of Sumy.

The Ukrainian artillery on the Kharkiv frontline is facing a bigger threat than ever from Russia’s fleet of Lancet kamikaze drones , according to a howitzer crew fighting there. “One comes, then a second one comes, 10 minutes later a third one comes,” said call sign Artist, the fresh-faced 21-year-old commander of an artillery battery of the 42nd Brigade which has been firing non-stop to repel Russia’s new offensive in the region over the past week. The soldiers requested that they only be referred to by their military call signs to protect their identities, Reuters reported.

A long-range Ukrainian strike on the Moscow-controlled Belbek airbase in occupied Crimea destroyed three Russian warplanes and a fuel facility near its main runway this week, US commercial satellite company Maxar said. The company cited satellite imagery taken on Thursday as showing that two MiG-31 fighter jets and an Su-27 fighter jet had been destroyed. It said one MiG-29 fighter aircraft also appeared to have been damaged.

A plan for Ukraine to be given an invitation to join Nato by the summer of 2028 will be rejected when the alliance meets for its annual summit in Washington this summer, one of the key promoters of the idea admitted on Thursday. Kurt Volker, a former US Ambassador to Nato, warned the US and Germany will veto the plan, sending a signal to Vladimir Putin to keep going, adding: “it means the war is likely to last at least another year.”

Ukraine needs more long-range weapons to fight off Russian advances in the northern Kharkiv region where the situation around the country’s second-largest city remains “highly dramatic”, Germany’s foreign minister said on Friday. Russian forces have made inroads of at least several kilometres in the region in recent days, forcing Kyiv’s out-manned troops to try to hold the line on a new front as Moscow mounts more pressure on the front in the east.

Putin queried the political legitimacy of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday when asked about the absence of plans to hold a presidential election in Ukraine at the moment, Reuters reported. Martial law imposed after Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 means Zelenskiy will not face an election when his term technically expires later this month, something he and Ukraine’s allies deem to be the right decision to take at a time of war.

Russia with respond in kind to any ambiguous nuclear behaviour from the West, Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, was reported as saying by the TASS news agency. According to Ryabkov, the West has adopted a stance of strategic uncertainty and ambiguity towards Russia, trying to make it difficult for Moscow to predict how Nato will react in various situations, including with nuclear weapons.

Russian president Vladimir Putin queried the political legitimacy of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday when asked about the absence of plans to hold a presidential election in Ukraine at the moment, Reuters reported.

Martial law imposed after Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 means Zelenskiy will not face an election when his term technically expires later this month, something he and Ukraine’s allies deem to be the right decision to take at a time of war.

When asked at a news conference in China during a state visit whether Zelenskiy’s political legitimacy was becoming an issue, Putin, who was re-elected for a six-year term in March, said the matter was a question for Ukraine’s constitutional court and political system to decide.

But he said the question mattered to Russia because if and when it signed some kind of agreement with Ukraine in future about the war it wanted to be sure it was signing a deal with the right person.

“If it comes to signing documents, we should sign those documents in such a crucial area with the legitimate authorities,” said Putin, whose own re-election Washington has said was neither free nor fair in comments which Moscow rejected.

Capturing Ukraine's Kharkiv is not part of Russia's current plan, says Putin

President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russian forces advancing in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region were creating a “buffer zone” to protect Russian border regions, but said capturing the city of Kharkiv was not part of Russia’s current plan.

Putin, who made the comments at a news conference during a state visit to China, said Russia’s recent thrust into the Kharkiv region was a response to Ukrainian shelling of Russian border regions such as Belgorod, Reuters reported.

“As for what is happening in the Kharkiv direction. This is also their (Ukraine’s) fault, because they shelled and continue, unfortunately, to shell residential neighbourhoods in the border areas, including Belgorod,” said Putin.

“Civilians are dying there. It’s obvious. They are shooting directly at the city centre, at residential areas. And I said publicly that if this continues, we will be forced to create a security zone, a buffer zone. That is what we are doing.”

When asked if Russian forces planned to take control of nearby Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second biggest city, Putin said: “As for Kharkiv, there are no such plans as of today.”

Britain has added three new designations to its North Korea sanctions list, relating to Pyongyang’s military programmes, and one to its Russia sanctions regime, an update to the government’s website showed on Friday.

The government imposed asset freezes on Paekyangsan Shipping Co, Toplivo Bunkering Company, as well as Toplivo Bunkering company director Aleksey Mikhailovich Vorotnikov, a Russian national.

It sanctioned Russian group Vostochnaya Stevedore Limited Liability Company, Reuters reported.

Ukraine has not publicly claimed responsibility for striking the airbase, Reuters reported.

Fighting 'to intensify' in Sumy as Russian forces make further advances in Kharkiv

It is important to cut off Russian supply routes and give Ukraine weapons “that can be used over medium and long distances,” Annalena Baerbock said on the sidelines of a meeting of the foreign ministers in Strasbourg.

“We are also working with other partners on this.” Overall, it is an “extremely difficult situation,” she added.

The proposals for Ukraine to be given a guaranteed Nato membership date were published earlier this week by a working group on which Volker sat that was chaired by the head of the Ukraine Presidential office Andriy Yermak and the former Nato secretary general Andris Rasmussen.

The report, backed by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy , had been regarded as Ukraine’s best hope of setting a specific date by which it would enjoy the protection of Nato, overcoming the disappointment of the Vilnius Nato summit last year in which Ukraine was offered no route map to membership.

“Russia will put the topic of ‘red lines’ aside and will respond to the West in a mirror manner,” Ryabkov said in an interview to state-run TASS news agency

Zelenskiy says situation in Kharkiv region "stabilised" - reports

Russian forces have advanced 10 km into Ukraine’s Kharkiv region in one area but the situation has “stabilised” as of Friday, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said as cited by RBC-Ukraine media outlet.

“Today, our defence forces have stabilised the Russians where they are now. The deepest point of their advance is 10 km,” Zelenskiy told journalists.

Massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea causes power cutoffs in Sevastopol

A massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea early on Friday caused power cutoffs in the city of Sevastopol and set a refinery ablaze in southern Russia, Russian authorities said.

The drone raids marked Kyiv’s attempt to strike back during Moscow’s offensive in northeastern Ukraine, which has added to the pressure on outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian forces who are waiting for delayed deliveries of crucial weapons and ammunition from Western partners.

The Russian defence ministry said air defences downed 51 Ukrainian drones over Crimea, another 44 over the Krasnodar region and six over the Belgorod region. It said Russian warplanes and patrol boats also destroyed six sea drones in the Black Sea, AP reported.

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the governor of Sevastopol, which is the main base for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, said the drone attack damaged the city’s power plant. He said it could take a day to fully restore energy supplies and warned residents that power would be cut to parts of the city.

“Communal services are doing their best to restore the power system as quickly as possible,” he said in a statement.

Razvozhayev also announced that schools in the city would be closed temporarily.

Kharkiv city mayor Ihor Terekhov reported four explosions during the attack, writing on the Telegram messaging app that one of the strikes caused a fire.

The attack damaged five buildings, one of them belonging to the district administration, Kharkiv’s regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said on Telegram.

Opening summary

Good morning and welcome to the Ukraine live blog. We start with news that the Ukrainian artillery on the Kharkiv frontline is facing a bigger threat than ever from Russia’s fleet of Lancet kamikaze drones , according to a howitzer crew fighting there.

The drone, with X-shaped wings and carrying several kilograms of explosive, was already one of the biggest threats to Ukrainian artillery and armour for over a year.

However, the crew of the Soviet-era self-propelled 2S1 Gvozdika howitzer that Reuters spoke to had never seen anything close to the number of Lancets flying in the skies of the Kharkiv region, despite having seen plenty of service on several of the most intense parts of the frontline.

In other news:

Russia does not have sufficient forces on the ground to make a major breakthrough in Ukraine after launching its offensive in the Kharkhiv region , Nato’s supreme allied commander for Europe, Christopher Cavoli, said on Thursday. “More to the point they don’t have the skill and the ability to do it ,” said the US general. “I’ve been in very close contact with our Ukrainian colleagues and I’m confident that they will hold the line.

Ukraine said on Thursday it was trying to “stabilise” the frontline in the Kharkiv region . Moscow has seized 278 sq km (107 sq miles) of Ukrainian territory between 9 and 15 May, based on data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). It represents the largest territorial gain in a single operation since mid-December 2022 . Cavoli said Ukraine’s forces were “being shipped vast amounts of ammunition, vast amounts of short range air defence systems and significant amounts of armoured vehicles right now”.

Dan Sabbagh writes that Russia’s rapid advances in Kharkiv raise serious questions about Kyiv’s ability to defend itself . Russia had telegraphed the operation in advance and Ukraine was warned by western intelligence, Sabbagh writes – though military analysts stress there are explanations for why Ukraine has been forced back . “It’s suicidal for Ukraine to have its main line of defence on the border, where the Russians can hit you with artillery and glide bombs and the Ukrainians don’t have weapons available like Himars rocket artillery to hit back because of US restrictions,” said George Barros, an analyst with the Institute for the Study of War. As a result, Russian forces were able to mass across the border in a relatively safe space, then mobilise into a lightly populated “grey zone” of Ukraine .

Ukraine accused Russia of capturing and killing civilians in the border town of Vovchansk and of keeping about 35 to 40 people as “human shields”. “According to operational information, the Russian military, trying to gain a foothold in the city, did not allow local residents to evacuate,” said the interior minister, Igor Klymenko. “They began abducting people and driving them to basements.” Sergiy Bolvinov, head of the Kharkiv region’s police investigation department: “ The Russians keep them in one place and actually use them as a human shield , as their command headquarters is nearby.” There was no immediate response from Moscow to the allegations.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy met military leaders in Kharkiv city and said: “The situation in the Kharkiv region is generally under control, and our soldiers are inflicting significant losses on the occupier. However, the area remains extremely difficult . We are reinforcing our units.”

A protracted air raid alert in most of the Kharkiv region was lifted early on Friday. The regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said at least five drones struck Kharkiv. The public broadcaster Suspilne said an air raid alert had been in effect for more than 16 1/2 hours in Kharkiv city, the longest recorded since the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian attacks have destroyed one or more Russian warplanes and infrastructure at the Belbek airbase in occupied Crimea , according to reporting based on satellite imagery and other resources. The pro-Ukrainian partisan force Atesh said a warehouse at Belbek was hit, destroying ammunition for Russian warplanes. Multiple fires at the Belbek complex have been detected by Nasa’s satellite fire tracking service, Firms, in recent days . Ukrainian strikes using Atacms missiles were characterised by occupation authorities as having been repelled, in line with standard Russian official language playing down Ukrainian operations.

The US has announced sanctions on two Russian individuals and three Russian companies for facilitating arms transfers between Russia and North Korea , including ballistic missiles for use against Ukraine.

Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of the North Korean ruler, Kim Jong-un, denied arms exchanges with Russia, state media KCNA reported. However, UN sanctions monitors have determined that debris from a missile that landed in Kharkiv was from a North Korean Hwasong-11 series ballistic missile . US state department spokesman Matthew Miller said Russia had already used upwards of 40 North Korean-produced ballistic missiles against Ukraine , as well as munitions, having imported them in contravention of UN resolutions.

The International Monetary Fund will start a new Ukraine mission in coming weeks to assess its $15.6bn loan programme and latest economic developments, IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack said. The loan review mission also will revise the IMF’s analysis of Ukraine’s debt sustainability. “ The Ukrainian economy has shown remarkable resilience . Although the outlook does remain subject to exceptionally high war-related uncertainty.”
