The vessel appears to be in fair overall condition. The seller reports that all systems are in good working order as expected with the exception of the refrigerator as noted. The standing rigging was replaced about 13 years ago, the running rigging is in good condition with a good inventory of spares. The boat is configured as a sloop, and the main sail has recently added taper battens that improve performance. There is also a 120% roller furler head sail. The hull has some exterior scratches and dings; no serious damage, however. The deck is solid. Stock #320794 ***SALE PENDING*** The Mac 65 was designed specifically for the Transpac. An impressive cruiser and racer that sleeps 8!!! The MacGregor 65-1 was originally designed specifically for the Trans Pacific Race (Transpac). The boat is powered by a Pathfinder In Line 6 Cylinder, 85 HP diesel engine with dedicated fire protection in the engine compartment, and another fire extinguisher in the salon area. The vessel is equipped with a GPS chart-plotter at the nav station with a repeater at the helm, VHF radio with AIS receiving and a remote mic at the helm, a RayMarine RL80C color radar station, and radar repeater. The port and starboard mid-ship and forward berths, a large V-berth with an after-market hatch above, and a double aft berth allow 8 to sleep comfortably onboard. The single head has a toilet with push-button macerator, a sink, and a shower with a tub. There is a main 12V panel, 2 auxiliary 12V panels, a battery switch, and battery charger. The galley features a 3-burner gimbal stove with oven, a sink, and a small refrigerator/freezer (needs compressor). Reason for selling is moving to the tropics.

This is a great 1989 MacGregor 65 Pilothouse, needs a little work but with so much potential!

Macgregor made 2 versions of the 65- the first was a very light racing sled of which about 25 were made.

Being lightly built and considered somewhat “disposable” these early boats had a reputation for being flimsy and cheap-made, their only positives being that they were cheap and extremely fast- up to 30 knots.

Starting with hull #26 Macgregor redesigned the deck, adding a pilothouse, and greatly increased the strength of the boats adding about 7,000lbs of fiberglass and 3,000 lbs of ballast in a shoal finned keel.

The last dozen boats built were changed by moving the engine from the pilothouse to the aft lazarett/cabin and installing a V-drive.

The old engine space was converted to a freezer. Molded-in steps were added to the transom.

This mid-production model differs only in the location of the engine and lack of transom steps.

All of the pilothouse models are extremely well built to offshore standards.

The hull is up to 3” thick under the keel and is a minimum of 3/8” found on the aftermost topsides. There is no coring except for some marine plywood in the deck under the winches and mooring cleats.

Having a solid glass hull and deck eliminates any concern about core rot or delamination issues.

No ABS certificate but built the same way to the same standards.

Macgregors were all built with high-quality hand mixed/catalyzed resins and as such do not have a history of blistering. In fact, blisters are extremely rare.

The boat has been dived on and the hull, keel, and rudder are all sound.

The engine and related bits operate as they should, it starts easily and runs well without smoke but does need fresh batteries and the wiring cleaned up.

Folding Max-Prop and modern dripless shaft seal.

There are no sails, estimated quotes for the main, inner jib, and genoa in dacron from totaling about $14k.

The traveler is usable.

The boat has 4 Lewmar #52 winches, some of which have damage to the top plates.

Also on board are 3 Lemar #40 winches, all in good shape.

All winches are self-tailing.

The inner staysail and genoa sails are mounted to Harken #3 furlers, both in good shape but parts are readily available should they be needed.

The hydraulics for the boom vang and backstay are all there.

The galley has a CNG stove/oven with two tanks in the aft stateroom.

Water pumps, etc are functional. Refrigeration needs to be replaced or use as an icebox.

Both heads appear functional.

Vertical clearance for the ICW is 67’

Macgregor are amazing boats to sail- incredibly stable, very little pitching, easily single-handed and extremely fast, often passing everything in sight with little effort.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

This second version of the MACGREGOR 65 was more of a performance cruiser than the earlier, more racing oriented model. It features a raised deckhouse with an inside steering station. The interior was completely redesigned. The hull was significantly reinforced and it was also available with a winged keel.
