2022 Invincible 33 Catamaran

  • By Boating Tech Team
  • December 6, 2021

Invincible’s 33 catamaran is one of the most stable and comfortable to run on the water, thanks to the exclusive, patented Morrelli & Melvin hull design.

Invincible 33 Catamaran running in the ocean

The Invincible’s hybrid semi-asymmetrical hull applies the best characteristics of an asymmetrical catamaran with the soft-riding symmetrical cats. The result is a boat that makes sharp turns without awkward outboard heeling. Even in quartering seas, the sponsons stand firm in the slop. Double steps increase efficiency.

The helm station offers three-wide seating with a centered wheel. The leaning-post seat is comfortable for sitting or leaning. A step below the helm adds comfort while standing or seated. The station itself offers massive room for dual 20-inch (or larger) screens and, in our case, a 9-inch VesselView display, an Icom VHF radio and a Fusion stereo controller. The hardtop stretches wide and aft of the leaning post, keeping the helm glare-free and shaded.

The fighting cockpit is impressively spacious, taking full advantage of the 10-foot-3-inch beam. An oval livewell with a clear acrylic lid in the transom is 65 gallons, pressurized, and fed from a sea chest with three pumps in the starboard sponson. To port of this livewell is a pair of drawers ideal for tackle, rope, or wash and wax supplies. There’s also a larger 65-gallon livewell below the sole.

Invincible 33 Catamaran forward lounge

The mezzanine seat (back of the leaning post) is triple-wide, and the seating angle is designed to lean back even when the boat is on plane. Tackle storage is conveniently accessed behind the drop-down seatback and in the sides of the leaning post.

Four fish boxes and a coffin box ahead of the center console offer plenty of fish storage, and they pump out with durable gulper pumps instead of temperamental macerators.

A dual lounge forward of the helm features thick cushions, deep bolsters, armrests and handy cup holders. Invincible’s great ride and spacious deck make it a formidable fishing machine, but one that can deliver comfort during casual cruises or long rides to the angling grounds.

High Points

  • Forty-seven rod holders arrayed in gunwales, the transom, and the leaning post and center console.
  • Mezzanine seating converts to a tackle station, with spacious tackle storage in the leaning post.

Invincible 33 Catamaran First Glance

  • By Chris Woodward
  • Updated: October 29, 2020

2020 Invincible 33 Catamaran left

Invincible Boats has added to its stable of catamaran vessels with the new 33. The company also just unveiled a new 46 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on Oct. 28. The two new models join already popular 35-, 37- and 40-footers.

“Our brand is focused on the serious saltwater sport fisherman, and as such, we believe that the most effective size range to chase trophy fish is 33 to 49 feet,” CEO John Dorton says. “With the launch of our new 33-foot catamaran, we officially have the largest model offering in this segment. No matter how or where you fish, we have a model for you.”

RELATED: Invincible 35 Catamaran First Glance

All of Invincible’s catamarans use the same patented hybrid semi-asymmetrical multihull, which was created by Morrelli & Melvin — designers of America’s Cup and Olympic competition cats.

The Invincible 33 Catamaran features two livewells and four fish boxes.

The 33 is technically just an inch shy of 34 feet in length overall. Its beam measures 10 feet 3 inches — on multihulls, the boat’s beam essentially carries from transom to bow. The new cat features two livewells, one on the centerline in the transom and one belowdecks to starboard of the mezzanine seating, four fish boxes, and additional storage in the bow.

The twin-outboard platform carries up to 900 hp and 400 gallons of fuel.

Specifications:

  • LOA: 33 ft. 11 in.
  • Beam: 10 ft. 3 in.
  • Weight: 9,800 lb. (w/ power)
  • Transom Deadrise: (cat)
  • Fuel Capacity: 400 gal.
  • Max HP: 900 hp

Invincible 33 Catamaran Review

Let's take a closer look at the invincible 33 catamaran in this boat review.

Invincible 33 Catamaran Review

The Morelli and Melvin designed hulls each Invincible catamaran features takes comfort and efficiency to the next level.

If I were trying to sell the performance or demonstrate to someone who’d never ridden on a power catamaran fishing boat how well they handled rough weather- jumping on any of the Invincible Cats would be a great first step. After being blown away by the 37 Invincible Cat last year, the 33 had its work cut out for it. My first concern was “could Invincible build one small enough to run great with only twin power that would also stand up to offshore weather of any consequence?” The short and long answer is, absolutely.

The 33 Catamaran proved to be another Morrelli and Melvin hull design that delivers a smooth, dry, and remarkably solid ride in real world offshore weather. Each of these models are laid out similarly and the new 33 Cat is a scaled down version of each of her bigger sisters. The difference is how much roomier this 33-foot boat feels due to her wise use of every inch of over 300 square feet of work space. A quick 360-degree spin around the single level deck reveals four extra-large insulated fish holds underfoot in the bow and amidships. A pair of large livewells (up to 70-gallons) are in the transom and below deck to starboard, each supplied via sea chest and outfitted with primary and spare pumps.

Plenty of tackle storage is available hidden behind the mezzanine seat back on the helm station as well as on both sides of the helm box and within the transom bulkhead to port. A large drink cooler is also below the mezzanine seat. For rod storage, there isn’t a location on board where you won’t find a rod holder on either side of you within arm’s reach. The helm is enclosed on three sides in glass with a triple wide seat facing a centered helm control. A pair of 400 Mercury engines pushed the 33 into the 60 MPH range with ease.

For any remaining dyed in the wool old school non-believers who are on the fence regarding the roominess, comfort, performance and ride that a perfectly designed catamaran offers, a ride on the Invincible 33 will without a doubt push you over the edge.

Salt Water Sportsman

0411freeman_368

For most anglers, the ideal day afloat includes a forecast of fair winds and following seas. It’s just the opposite for boat testers, however. To get a true feel for how a boat does in real-world conditions, we prefer sloppy chop and stiff breezes. Right on cue, the Gulf of Mexico was a frothy mix resembling chocolate milk with whitecaps the day I was scheduled to test the Freeman 33 Catamaran last winter. I couldn’t have ordered a better scenario.

After I greeted company president Billy Freeman at the marina in Carrabelle, Florida, my first impression of his boat was how big it appeared. With its clean, uncluttered layout and wide beam, it looked like a 40-footer. It didn’t shrink once I stepped aboard either. The most prominent feature is the massive coffin box mounted in front of the console. On the test boat, the mounting flange of this box was glassed in neatly below the deck so there weren’t any seams to collect dirt. With its 800-quart capacity, it’ll keep a giant tuna perfectly chilled. The box also drains directly into the oversize half-pipe tunnel between sponsons for quick cleaning. Since every boat is built to order, a drink compartment can be added easily on request.

Even with the large coffin box, there’s still lots of room in the bow. Wraparound coaming pads and the level foredeck would make stand-up fishing a breeze. Dual storage compartments in the bow sole are cavernous too. For traveling or overnight convenience, these compartments are large enough to stow rods and other odd-size gear, such as fenders and the requisite five-gallon buckets.

The head compartment, with starboard access, will accommodate a porta-potty if that’s a necessary option. Our test boat didn’t have one, but the space does provide easy access to the helm for rigging and electronics. There’s certainly no space limitation on the business side of the large console either. The electronics panel on ours held two flush-mounted Garmin GPSMap 5212 displays with room to spare. Gauges could be scanned easily, and the helm’s sightlines were not impeded by the beefy hardtop framework, which included a pair of Rupp Z-30 Top Gun outriggers and an aft rod rocket launcher.

A comfortable leaning post with an internal storage compartment is close enough to the console that you don’t have to stretch, but it doesn’t cramp legroom. Tackle centers on each side rack four large Plano boxes apiece. Aft of the leaning post, a 110-quart drink box and padded bench seat offers the perfect vantage point to watch baits. A pressurized 50-gallon livewell on the transom centerline (with a bait-calming blue finish) and two large storage compartments in the cockpit lazarette round out the aft layout.

33 foot catamaran

To say this cat is overbuilt is an understatement. Designed with the short Gulf chop in mind and lots of input from professional charter skippers, it can certainly handle a fight. Eight internal bulkheads strengthen the twin hulls’ integrity. All tabs are glassed or fixed with chemical adhesive. Closed-cell coring and knitted biaxial fiberglass roving are used throughout. The top cap is through-bolted and puttied, but before the putty cures, the cap is also glassed on the inside. The result? A rock-solid feel with no annoying creaks or shudders.

“I don’t hide the fact that it’s a catamaran,” Freeman told me as we idled downriver and into the sound. “I wanted it to look good, but there are only so many things you can do with a rectangular shape. We did reduce weight and increase speed considerably. Will it turn like a monohull? No. It’s like a car instead of a motorcycle. But you will be able to scoot 50 miles per hour across a serious chop and enjoy a soft, dry ride.”

To prove this point, we zipped through East Pass, separating Dog and St. George islands, into open water. The building swells proved no match as the dual planing hulls rode up and then through the cresting waves. On the first few I braced myself, expecting the typical shock of landing, but it never came. The 33’s ride is as soft as a down pillow and extremely dry. That, combined with great fuel economy, is why it’s quickly winning converts among professional and serious amateur offshore enthusiasts alike. Another welcome attribute? On a long drift in a beam-to sea with three of us crowded on one side, the deck was stable as a slab of concrete.

One of the biggest complaints about some catamarans is the unpredictable handling. That wasn’t a factor with the Freeman. In turns the boat stayed flat with increased throttle. It didn’t slice or cut unexpectedly in following seas. Instead, it rode true, with a flair for speed. By the time we ran the performance portion of the test, the wind had churned the water into a washbowl of confused chop. With a pair of Yamaha F350 four-strokes for power and a normal load of fuel, the boat topped the 60-mph mark without hesitation. At a comfortable cruising pace of 38 mph, it sipped a miserly 27 gallons per hour. Combine that with the standard fuel capacity of 350 gallons (more can be added as an option), and that equals a lot of water under the keel.

If you’ve never driven a planing catamaran, do yourself a favor and sea-trial the Freeman 33 in some serious slop. I’m betting you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its performance.

With a beam just shy of 40 feet, the cat offers a generous amount of space onboard. The first hull is equipped with one giant owner’s suite, two generous VIP cabins, and one twin, but owners can also opt for a five-cabin layout. This particular owner’s suite covers almost half of the main deck and opens onto a private foredeck lounge. The main deck is also home to a well-equipped galley and a customizable aft cockpit, while the upper deck sports an additional forward cockpit, a sky lounge, and the helm. At the stern, the tender garage can transform into a spacious aft beach club with fold-down bulwarks that increase the amount of waterside space. Wider is widely considered to have started the trend of fold-out platforms for yachts.

Maggi says eight other hulls are under construction at the yard in Fano. Following the unveiling of the first hull in Venice, Wider will release a four-episode web series detailing the evolution of the pioneering multihull. The WiderCat 92’s worldwide debut is scheduled for the Cannes Yachting Festival this September.
