SEAWOLF EXPLORER (ex Dutch Falcon) is a 25.0m (82'0") motor yacht built by the Van der Valk shipyard in the Netherlands with naval architecture by Ginton Naval Architects, exterior design by Guido de Groot Design and modern interiors by Guido de Groot Design. She was launched in 2018 and features accommodation for eight guests in four cabins and has a crew of three, sleeping in two cabins.

The main deck aft integrates a sofa along the stern along with a pair of outdoor armchairs, between which is an elegant dining table for alfresco meals in the shade of the flybridge overhang. To port and starboard, there is a staircase leading down to the swim platform where guests have easy access to the tenders and the sea.

The foredeck layout places a deep sofa beneath the helm station, and a table can be used for casual alfresco dining. A broad sunbed covers the bow and receives all-day sunshine and uninterrupted views.

On the flybridge, the helm controls are placed forward and centre and a guest sofa are positioned to port and starboard that wraps around a drinks table on three sides. Amidships is a large plush C-shaped sofa and raised dining table, opposite of which is a wet bar with seating. The area to the aft is used for storing the tender and motorised water toys during transit and can be used for sunbathing, entertaining and exercise once clear.

The lower deck hosts the guest accommodation forward with the engine room amidships and the crew accommodation and lazarette to the aft.

SEAWOLF EXPLORER Specifications

The main deck places the helm station forward with a port corner sofa and a drinks table. Amidships the galley is placed to port, leaving room for a starboard foyer. The aft room is furnished with a forward formal dining table where up to eight guests can enjoy a meal at the elegant table. Behind, a forward-facing corner sofa to port and an aft-facing sofa surround a dining table. The adjacent cabinetry conceals a widescreen TV when not in use.

A pair of CATERPILLAR C12 390 engines produces a top speed of 13 knots and a range of 3,000 nautical miles at 9 knots.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 8 guests across 4 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 1 twin cabin and 1 bunk cabin. The Master suite is furnished with a king-sized bed with a corner desk and starboard day bed fitted beneath the window. The starboard bathroom consists of a forward shower with a seat, his-and-hers sinks in the middle of the bathroom area and a toilet behind. The forward VIP stateroom contains a raised queen-sized bed, to either side of which is a sofa/day bed. The aft bathroom contains a toilet and sink, and a separate shower with a seat. The twin cabin and bunk cabin also have en-suite facilities. The crew of three will ensure that every guest receives the first-class service throughout every cruise.

58m explorer Seawolf arrives at Pendennis for refit

British shipyard Pendennis has welcomed the 58 metre explorer yacht Seawolf to its Falmouth shipyard as the yacht prepares to undergo an extensive refit.

According to Pendennis, the project will include “exterior styling modifications, extensive engineering and electrical work and a full repaint of the hull and superstructure.” The yacht will also be outfitted with “new, luxury guest and crew interiors.”

First delivered by Dutch yard J&K Smit in 1957, the classic superyacht began its life as an oceangoing tug before being converted into a superyacht between 1998 and 2004. Her last refit was in 2016.

Seawolf’s current layout includes accommodations for up to 12 guests in five cabins, including a full-beam master suite located on the private owner's deck, complete with an office and pantry. Her deck spaces also boast an al fresco cocktail bar, a swimming pool and plenty of sunbathing and lounging areas.

An ice-strengthened hull allows for remote cruising and her extensive travels have so far taken her to a number of exotic destinations including Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, French Polynesia, Fiji and the Dominican Republic. A popular charter yacht, Seawolf boasts a range of toys including Jet Skis and windsurfers, plus the crew includes a certified dive instructor.

In recent years, however, Seawolf has spent time cruising cooler waters in the UK. “We enjoyed cruising the Cornish coastline and visiting Pendennis in 2020 and are pleased to be returning to such a beautiful location and professional shipyard,” commented Seawolf’s owners. “We are looking forward to the project and working with the team from Pendennis”.

Pendennis managing director Toby Allies said: “The whole team at Pendennis is really pleased to welcome Seawolf and her crew to Falmouth this week. The scope and scale of the project is really exciting for us and will utilise many of our in-house trade specialists. We’re looking forward to working on Seawolf and delivering her back to [her owners] for her next adventure.”

The expected completion date for Seawolf's refit is summer 2023.

Tech maverick, mike potter, has listed his inimitable 58.8m explorer yacht for sale with fraser….

Only a minority of yacht owners can honestly hold their hands up and say that they have journeyed as far as the eye can see on their boat. But then again, how many owners have a boat capable of towing two aircraft carriers – in tandem – from Boston to Japan during its former life as an ocean salvage tug?

You can’t really question M/Y Seawolf’s seaworthiness after hearing of such a feat – and you would bet your bottom dollar that this is beyond the capability of nearly every superyacht dubbed an ‘explorer’ on the marketplace.

But, now comes a rare opportunity for the increasingly explorer-centric demographic of buyers to purchase Seawolf , with the owner having recently listed her for sale with Jody O’Brien of Fraser and John DeCaro of All Ocean Yachts for a very realistic $13,959,000. The 58.8m vessel, originally built at Scheepswerf Smit in the Netherlands in 1957, was converted into a luxury superyacht at Astilleros de Palma in Mallorca from 1998 to 2004.

“It shifted the emphasis from going from A to B, to being at A and being at B.”

The current owner, Mike Potter, who is founder and former CEO of the publicly-traded Cognos – the largest software company in Canada that was sold to IBM in 2007 for $4.9 billion – came across Seawolf ten years ago when O’Brien made the introduction. Potter had owned a 96ft. custom-built Vitters sailing yacht, but was in pursuit of something altogether more ambitious to deliver the ultimate travelling experience for his three kids.

“When my broker, Jody, showed me Seawolf , I just fell in love – it was a ‘puppy-dog sale’, I just had to have it,” Potter explains, in an exclusive conversation with SuperyachtNews. “I wanted a boat with a brilliant array of activities – above the water, in the water and under the water, so this boat was perfect.” 

Before long, Potter’s yachting lifestyle had completely altered its course. “I had a crewed yacht before, but it was always very hands-on for me when we were sailing.” His astute observation of the transition to large motoryacht ownership was that “it shifted the emphasis from going from A to B, to being at A and being at B”.

Potter and his family have spent between 80 and 100 days on board each year for the last decade, and have quite literally seen the world on board. Central America, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, St Petersburg, Indonesia, the Tuamotus islands and the Mamanuca islands are among the extraordinary array of destinations they have visited, as well as the more traditional cruising destinations of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

"I want to be as proud when I walk down to the engine room to speak to the engineers, as I am when I have a gin and tonic with friends on the deck."

And despite this inspiring logbook, O’Brien tells me that over the course of Potter’s ownership, he has actually improved the condition of the yacht. Potter later tells me that he actually owns and runs a vintage aircraft restoration shop for a hobby. With a fleet of mostly Warbirds, but also a Spitfire, a Hurricane, a Corsair, a Mustang and other planes to his name, he has considerable know-how when it comes to the preservation of some of the finer forms of transport.  

“For me, yacht maintenance is not run by a cost-accountant – it’s run by me saying, ‘I want to be proud of this boat’. And I want to be as proud when I walk down to the engine room to speak to the engineers, as I am when I have a gin and tonic with friends on the deck,” Potter adds.

“I’ve bought a number of airplanes over the years and the mistakes I’ve made were always because I never quite understood how to care for it properly. The same applies to boats,” he concludes. Potter’s advice to owners and buyers? Do your research. If you’re buying a yacht, find out who the owner was, why they owned it, what they did with the boat and how they took care of it.
