Cariberia wins
Cariberia (Stephen and Peter Card/Max Pachot) crossed the finish line at the RWYC Clubhouse just after three this afternoon to take line honours and win the 2018 Round Britain and Ireland Race. They had spent the last two days battling with Hissy Fit (Simon and Matt Baker) in very light winds, with the lead changing hands as they went along. Finally Cariberia caught the wind and finished three quarters of an hour ahead of Hissy Fit. Cariberia’s win is especially significant because they are the only boat to sail the complete RB&I course. The remaining boats decided while in Castlebay that, having suffered slow speeds on the first two legs and faced with further weather enforces delays, they would continue on a shorter course omitting St Kilda and Muckle Flugga.
Start of the Round Britain and Ireland Race
The Competitors had perfect weather for the start of the 14th Round Britain and Ireland Race. Father Sam Philpott fired the starting gun at 1200 and the Competitors followed by many spectator yachts made their way to the Plymouth Breakwater and on to Kinsale, a moderate north easterly wind sped them on their way. The EDGE arrived in Kinsale this...

After rounding Muckle Flugga they attempted to shelter...

About the Royal Mersey Yacht Club
The Royal Mersey Yacht Club was founded in 1844 in the reign of Queen Victoria, its first patron, making it one of the longest established Royal Yacht Clubs in the UK. For over 170 years the Club has promoted yacht racing on the River Mersey and adjoining waters.
The Club focuses on one-design keelboat racing, serving 3 distinct fleets, and enjoys what is virtually the only stretch of sheltered deep water on the west coast of England – the combination offering a unique sailing environment. There is an intensive programme of racing from April to October offering both weekday evening races and events at weekends. The Club also hosts handicap racing for cruisers and organises or participates in regattas and other events, including the Menai Straits fortnight .
The Club House is located at Rock Ferry on the Wirral, and is a few yards from the jetty that is used by the Club for access to the River. A short distance from the Mersey Tunnel and with fast links to the M56 and M53 motorways, the Club is within easy access to members in Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and beyond, as well as to local members on Merseyside.
There is a very active social programme centred in the Club House. From the regular suppers that are served after racing to the more formal dinners and the occasional ball, the Club offers members ample opportunity for post-race relaxation and many occasions for inviting guests to social events. The Club House is also available for private functions.
Deep water moorings are organised by the club for class boats. A fleet of safety boats operates a boarding service from the jetty on all race days. Winter storage is available for members’ boats in the Club boat-yard.
Experienced yachtsmen and interested novices are particularly welcome at The Royal Mersey, and we run a series of taster & training events to establish and develop new members within the club. Visitors normally sail with a member for a few occasions before being invited to apply for membership .

Anyone is welcome to book our Clubhouse accommodation and enjoy our event facilities in our waterside grounds. Please browse our web pages, contact the office to arrange a visit to the club or watch this short video….
At the inaugural meeting, Calshot Station Commander, Group Captain H R Nicholl CBE, was elected the first Commodore and the annual subscription was set at £1. A room in Calshot Castle was used as the headquarters. Subsequently, two wooden huts on the foreshore were acquired. The Club and members’ yachts were moored in the creek, and dinghies were ‘parked’ on a flying boat slipway. Members enjoyed many happy sailing adventures until the onset of WW2, when the club was, out of necessity, disbanded.
In 1947 at the Royal Air Force Club in Piccadilly, the few original surviving members met, and Air Marshal Sir Arthur Conningham was elected Commodore. The Air Ministry presented him with the contents of the ‘Wings Club”, which had been established for wartime airmen visiting London. The furniture was moved to the two huts on the foreshore at Calshot, reclaimed by the Club Secretary, now Group Captain AM Carey.
The Club was in business once again, and one of the first tasks was to bring back the Windfall yachts from Germany; these prizes of war, had been built, for use by the members of the Luftwaffe. The whole fleet was sailed back to the UK by the three services, with the RAFYC having responsibility for the RAF allocation to Calshot.
During the next few years, little thought was given to development of the Club, and membership was static until Group Captain E F Haylock (Retd), the editor of Yachting World, became Commodore in 1951. He persuaded the Committee that the Club would always struggle to develop at Calshot, and would need to move to a more accessible location to succeed. Many schemes were mooted but, by chance, he heard that Riverside House had been purchased by Port Hamble to enable it to increase its foreshore holdings.
Further persuasion convinced Air Marshal Sir Leslie Hollingworth that the Royal Air Force should have a clubhouse and facilities to rival other Service Yacht Clubs. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir John Slessor, agreed and authorised a long-term loan. Extra expenses and legal fees of £1000 arose; however, a generous RAFYC member, H S Whiteside, (who owned ‘Skaggerack’, a 100 ton yacht built for Goering) settled these bills.
On 10th of May 1952, Sir John Slessor opened Riverside House. It proved to be popular! Membership increased, and RAF Calshot donated one of the original huts to assist with providing much needed extra space. In later years Riverside House itself has been extended.
From these early days, the club now warmly welcomes non-service members who continue to support the Club’s development, most recently in 2015, with the development of walk-ashore moorings within the Prince Philip Yacht Haven. An early club handbook can be viewed here.
The club actively seeks records and pictures to help capture and build on the history of the Club. Please contact the office(I am sure you can figure out what goes here)rafyc.co.uk if you have items or information of interest to share.

Royal Warrant, Club Burgee and Battle Flags
Abridged from the Club’s Byelaws: As a privileged yacht club, the RAFYC has been authorised to fly a defaced Blue Ensign from its own premises and for those members who comply with the terms of our Royal Warrant. Those terms require that permits under the warrant may only be issued to full members who are boat owners and that boat is not operated commercially. The defaced ensign should be raised and lowered at the times specified by the warrant and may only be flown with the permit holder aboard.
A Club Burgee can be flown by full and temporary members. Club burgees must be flown when the Ensign is flown and are normally flown from the starboard cross tree or the highest part of the mast that is reasonable. Some Club Officer positions attract a unique burgee to signify their role.
A Battle Flag may be flown by members on rallies.
Other Protocols
Dress code in the Club is normally clean, tidy, shore-going wear with tailored shorts being allowed 1st May to 30th September and in the winter during the day only before 1900 hrs. The rules also state no bare feet or oilskins, coats or sea boots in the bar, dining area or lounge. (these items can be secured in the locking racks outside the changing rooms).
For organised events, the dress code is normally signified by (C) Casual, (J&T) Jacket and Tie for gentlemen, (F) Formal wear.
Guests are welcome in the club and grounds, in your company and you must first sign them in the guest book.
We do ask that your consideration is given to the proper use of the car park as outlined in Bylaw 1.8 (updated in 2021). Only members’ cars issued with the current permit may use the facility. Should you be absent for a long period, you may wish to leave your keys securely with the office in the event that your vehicle needs to be moved. Improper use of our car can cause a significant detriment to fellow members.
Guests aren’t entitled to use the parking facilities unless prior permission was granted. Please contact the office in advance for any such request to be considered.
From time to time, non-members for example, people who have booked our events facilities, may be granted use of a specific number of spaces, at times that the club is generally not busy.

Welcome to RDYC
The Royal Dee Yacht Club was founded in 1815 as the Dee Yacht Club and is the second oldest yacht club in the UK. On November 1st 1847 the Club was accorded Royal Patronage to become The Royal Dee YC.
The Royal Dee has been involved with the organisation of many sailing events in the Irish Sea, often in collaboration with such organisations as ISORA and RORC.
2015 saw the 200th anniversary celebrations spread across the year and included a formal dinner at Eaton Park, Cheshire and a more casual cocktail party at Cadnant Gardens on Anglesey during the Menai Strait Regattas.
We also support the Volvo Dun Laoghaire regattas, the Menai Strait regattas and the Welsh IRC championship. More recently we have launched our Sailing trust that is supporting young sailors in the North West of England, North Wales and Ireland. Click the Sailing Trust link above for more information.
The latest beneficiary of the Royal Dee Sailing trust, receiving help and support, is Laura Hampton (pictured left). Within the Clubs aim to get young people into Offshore sailing, we are helping her in her quest to race around the Globe aboard "UNICEF", one of the entrants in the Clipper Round the World Race.
Laura will be periodically sending us snippets from her adventure as her journey around the globe continues.
Follow the links above to more information about the trust and to read more about Lauras' adventure.

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.
This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.
A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.
It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.
The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.
Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.
Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.
The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.
Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.
