Tri-Lens Radar Reflector

yacht radar reflector for sale

In the September 1995 issue, we reported results of radar reflector testing done at the Stanford Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. This was made possible thanks to Dick Honey, then a semi-retired senior principal scientist at SRI, uncle to former SRI research engineer, well-known navigator and sailor Stan Honey (also the guy who puts the yellow first-down band across the screen of your TV during pro football games). Stan also assisted, as did West Marines Chuck Hawley and a third member of this Bay Area brain trust, Jim Corenman.

Two Types Marine radar is of two types: X-band and S-band. The former is the type commonly carried aboard small boats. It operates at a frequency of about 9.4 GHz (9400 MHz) and has a wavelength of 3.2 centimeters (cm). S-band radar is used aboard large ships and operates at 3 GHz with a wavelength of 10 cm.

Ship operators generally use their X-band radar near shore because it has better resolution and can pick up smaller targets better than S-band, which is commonly preferred offshore due to its longer range and superior resistance to sea clutter.

Terms Radar reflectors are described in terms of their Radar Cross Selection (RCS) and their performance is measured in decibels (dB) relative to some reference, usually a 1m2 sphere (profile).

Tri-Lens Radar Reflector In our 1995 test, a recommended minimum average RCS of 2.5 m2 was adopted at the suggestion of GEC Marconi, maker of the Firdell Blipper reflector.

Radar reflector performance is a direct function of size, proportional to the fourth power of its linear size. Doubling a reflector’s size increases its effective area 16 times. In the 1995 report, we wrote: “As the smallest dimension of a reflector gets down to a few wavelengths of the radar signal, it quits acting as a reflector and starts to act as a lump of metal. Remember that a wavelength is 3.2 cm (1-1/4″) for X-band, and 10 cm (4″) for S-band. So, small reflectors must be looked at with a great deal of suspicion, as there really is no substitute for size.”

Besides strength of return, consistency also is critical. Many radar units are not continually monitored but set to automatically sound an alarm if a target registers three consecutive “hits.” One big hit wont alert the ship’s crew that a smaller vessel is in the vicinity.

Reflectors tested in the 1995 report included the octahedral Davis Echomaster and Emergency; the trihedral and dihedral-based Holland Yacht Equipment, Firdell Blipper, Mobri, High Gain Rotation and Cyclops; and the Luneburg lens-type Lensref. We also tested the Radar Flag, which was practically invisible.

1995 Results The top-performing reflector six years ago was the Davis Echomaster in the vertex up position with 0 heel, which registered 63% of returns above 2.5 m2. In the double-catch rain position and 20 heel, just 43% of returns were above 2.5 m2.

The Lensref has virtually no nulls; its polar plot is a virtual circle. Had the minimum average RCS been just 2.0 m2, the Lensref would have easily won with 100% of returns greater than the threshold. At 2.5 m2, however, just 30% of the returns exceeded the threshold. And this was at less than 18 heel, over which its performance fell off dramatically. A gimbaled mount was recommended.

The Tri-Lens Last year, we were contacted by Tim Rozendal of Rozendal Associates in Santee, California, asking us to test his new reflector. Tim said he has supplied more than 20,000 Luneburg lenses to the US Navy, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard. When he became interested in developing a product suitable for the recreational boating industry, he studied our 1995 SRI report and came up with two sizes of the Tri-Lens Radar Reflector. Due to computer problems at SRI, we were unable to have Rozendals Tri-Lens tested in the same anechoic chamber as the others. Instead, we directed Rozendal to Ohio State Universitys Electro Science Laboratory Compact Range. A copy of the 1995 report was supplied to OSU so that the same test protocol could be followed, and a Davis Echomaster was also tested as a control.

The Tri-Lens has a novel configuration of three modified Luneburg lens reflectors oriented about a vertical axis. It was measured only at X-band.

We asked Dick Honey to review the OSU report and interpret the data. In his summation to PS, he said the Tri-Lens shows “the uniform azimuthal response expected of Luneburg lenses, as well as the excellent tilt (heel) response expected from the design, i.e., each lens looks only into its 120 azimuthal sector so that the spherical reflector on the back of each lens can be quite large, with no aperture blocking as occurs with most single Luneburgs designed for 360 coverage. In other words there are very few narrow angular gaps in the coverage between each lens.”

At 0 heel, 90% of returns exceeded the 2.5 m2 threshold; at 20 heel 70% exceeded the threshold and at 25 heel 69%. The Tri-Lens easily outperformed all other reflectors in the 1995 test.

Honey nevertheless had criticism of the Tri-Lens.

“Our reservations,” he wrote, “are not with the angular coverage, but with the magnitude of the reflection. (This same reservation applies to virtually all passive radar reflectors on the market today!) The Rozendal reflectors use 5.25-inch diameter spheres inside a somewhat larger radome, the spheres being approximately 4.2 wavelengths across at X-band, but only 1.4 wavelengths across at S-band. This means that they may not be much better at scattering S-band radar signals back towards the radar than the average winch, and S-band may be the only radar in use on the high seas (if any).

“As mentioned in our earlier test, the radar cross-section (RCS) of similar reflectors increases as the fourth power of the size, so it would take a relatively small increase in the size of the Luneburg lens to bring the X-band RCS up to 10 square meters (m2) the minimum echoing area requirement in the latest International Standard (ISO 8729, Marine radar reflectors, sec. 5.1.1). That is, a perfect Luneburg lens 5.25 inches in diameter should have an RCS of about 2 m2 at X-band, but a lens only 40% larger or 7 inches in diameter should have an RCS of 10 m2. In addition, it would have a 2-wavelength diameter at S-band, where it might begin to reflect better than a winch. Unfortunately, this would add significantly to the weight of a Lens-based reflector, and weight is already a concern with these reflectors, relative to an octahedral reflector like a Davis Echomaster.

“Rozendal also offers a Mini-Lens reflector, which as expected given its small size, cannot compete with any reflector on the market except for the Mobri.

“Wouldnt it be great if a radar reflector could achieve an RCS of at least 10 m2 at X-band over 360 of azimuth with trivial nulls and wide tolerance for heel? Of course, it should be less than a foot in diameter, weigh little, and be ‘almost free,’ as they say in Mexico.”

In response to these criticisms, Rozendal agrees that the Mini Tri-Lens “does not perform well using the 2.5 m2 threshold.” The Mini Tri-Lens, he says, was “intended for small boats and coastal sailing. It should be mounted as high as possible, preferably on top of the mast. The mini Tri-Lens does not have a large RCS but gives a consistent return. It has three narrow dead spots. The Mobri has 16 dead spots and any octahedral will have eight dead spots. A premium must not only be put on RCS but on the consistency of the return as well. Anything that will help improve a vessel’s radar visibility is worthwhile, particularly shorthanded vessels and those without radar.”

The International Standard for Marine Radar Reflectors (ISO 8729) was revised in 1997 and came two years after our 1995 test. In addition to the section 5.1.1 noted above, there are other relevant sections. 5.1.2 requires that a reflector’s azimuthal polar diagram “shall be such that its response over a total of 240 is not less than 2.5 m2. The response shall not remain below this level over any single angle of more than 10.”

And section 5.2 states, “The performance of the reflector up to at least +/- 15 from the horizontal (the degree of heel) shall be such that its response at any inclination remains above .625 m2 over a total angle of 240.”

Rozendal asserts that “This specification was written around the performance spec of the largest Cyclops unit (it weighs approx. 22 lbs.). They claim their unit is the only passive reflector that meets ISO 8729. No aluminum octahedral reflector is technically able to meet this specification. The Tri-Lens exceeds this specification.”

The standard Tri-Lens measures about 12″ across, is 6″ high, and weighs about 5.5 lbs. It sells for $219 and the Mini version for $129. West Marine now carries them. Price includes a Mast Mount Bracket and a coupler that can be adapted to any marine antenna mount.

As for Honey’s wish for a 10 m2 RCS/360 reflector, Rozendal said he does make a large Tri-Lens using 8″ diameter lenses. It has a RCS of 10 m2 for 300 and minimal degradation when in elevation. It weighs around 15 lbs. and sells for $699.

While bigger is better when it comes to radar reflectors, there are practical limits aboard small boats. Installing a radar unit may be a skipper’s best defense against collision at sea-the idea being that the best safeguard is for you to see the other guy rather than hoping he sees you-but not everyone wants or can afford a radar set. And even then, hanging a relatively inexpensive passive reflector certainly doesn’t hurt.

Compared to the high cost of the Lensref (about $425), the Tri-Lens is a bargain. It costs more than the Davis Echomaster ($60), but outperforms it. If you’re in the market for a passive radar reflector, we recommend the Tri-Lens ( www.tri-lens.com ).

Price is right. Goes together easy. It works haven't gotten run down by a ship yet.

Well constructed, about the same size as the West Marine unit at half the cost. Humboldt Bay used to have lots of fog, but that has changed a lot over the past 12 years. Still, nice to have if the fog gets back into the Bay before you do.

was easy to assemble and mount. Great deal.

Nice unit. Goes together easy but no instructions. Would give 5 stars but its a bit small.

Which Radar Reflector?

Rigging radar reflectors. which radar reflector to choose.

Tri-lens – From what I understand this radar reflector offers some of the best all around performance for the price. Typically you will see these mounted to the face of the mast. This presents an inherent problem for us sailboat riggers; it is in the path of the jib which is inevitably going to try and wipe it off of the front of the mast. This is especially a problem on boats which utilize overlapping headsails, don’t have forward lower shrouds, don’t have a mast mounted radar and guard (as pictured above), have aft swept spreaders, or use a permanent Stay-sail stay to help protect this vulnerable part from getting knocked off. These reflectors have recently been modified with a second mounting bracket on top for a sturdier mount (not pictured). This second bracket has made us more confident in installing these, as there is a big difference in how sturdy the unit is. Keep in mind the plastic cover of these lenses are well built and therefore very heavy. You’ll want to make sure that you have taken every precaution to ensure that it won’t come crashing down on your head! Echo Master – The most tried and trued of all of the reflectors. Many will argue that even though this isn’t the “fairest of them all”, it works pretty darn well. Especially when mounted in the coined “catch rain position” (pictured above), using Davis’ Echomaster Hanging Mount , optional. The problem is how do you mount the thing without it flailing about like a wild, out-of-control disco ball. See the gallery below for how we achieve a good way for these to be mounted beneath the first set of spreaders…

Have you seen these https://www.leadingedgepower.com/shop/products/wind-turbines/le-v50-vertical-axis-wind-turbine-1013843.html They are a bit heavy, and need need strong brackets, a simple ‘guard’ could be made to protect the sail- but the spinning blades – besides producing power – are supposed to be highly effective in reflecting Radar signals.

Thanks for the useful article! Buying a boat equipped with a Mobri and will consider adding a tri-lens for passages. Also AIS is a must! Are you still giving away t-shirts? I’d love one if so.

Thanks for the read and the kind words Rory. We are OUT of shirts!! Sorry, I wish I had one for you. Keep checking in with us, we’re always getting new swag for giveaways.

Just a comment from another industry: I fly for the airlines and all jets these days are equipped with TCAS, or the traffic collision avoidance system. This is an active collision avoidance system where TCAS equipped aircraft talk to the installations on other aircraft sharing altitude and airspeed information. If the TCAS computer senses that it’s safe zone has been breached it will provide the two aircraft in question “traffic advisories” along with an audible warning. If no action is taken and the two jets continue to close on each other, a “resolution advisory” is issued giving the two pilots opposite avoidance instructions to avoid a crash. This has virtually eliminated midair collisions between commercial aircraft.

Of course, you have a little less time to see and react when the closure rate is 1000 knots, but it is a tremendous system.

Given my experience with TCAS, I’d really recommend an active collision avoidance system, particularly if you spend any time around commercial shipping regardless of the prevalance of fog in your area.

As far as trying to McGuyver something, I would think that the lids of tin cans would work better than tin foil. In fact, if you had a few of them and some reflective tape you could probably come up with an approximation of an Echomaster in a pinch.

Thanks for the comment.

There is a collision avoidance system for boats, and although this is good, many boaters are cheap. I like the tin can idea, going to do that. It is difficult enough to afford the basic safety gear. My step dad had no gps or electronics in his day. The fanciest piece of equipment he had besides his sextant was an oil lamp which he gave me for my boat. I use it whenever I feel like getting a headache. Many boats also have proximity alarms, etc. It pays to have as many of these safeties as possible. (as affordable) I have a good friend that sailed the oceans solo for very may years. He is in his 80’s and I just convinced him to get a GPS a few years ago. He also asked me to find him a woman online, so if you know of someone… My question would be, do any of these barrel or inflatable reflectors double as mast flotation in case of capsize?

Haha! I have my own troubles with that Alain. Even though the Firdell Blipper has a very buoyant look I wouldn’t trust it as my anti-capsize device. Perhaps that’s what any of these are good for. Seems rather controversial…this whole radar reflector business.

Thank you for the chuckle and for taking the time.

Yes the Echomaster is quite effective if hung in the RAIN CATCH ATTITUDE, that , despite your claim, is NOT shown. Hung as shown by one corner is a rain SHEDDING position! The reflector needs 2-3 attachments so a ‘ CUP’ is formed at the top…hence ‘rain catch position’. When hung this way the other reflecting surfaces of the side pockets are more likely to bounce the radar signal back to its source (acting like a prism) than a flat vertical plane which are unlikely to be square on to the signal source Tilting will make it worse where the rain catch angles will still work. Area is important as is the flatness of the surfaces and accurate corner assembly. Regards, Lew .

Thanks for commenting and all of your points. You are correct the gallery image depicted does not employ the “Catch Rain Position”. This is noted below the gallery collection, but it is a little hard to read, I will put it at the top. Thanks, this is once of the many reasons I encourage commentors. The generic product image from Echomaster does show the unit in this position. I will add an image caption. Davis actually makes a specific spring style hanging (instead of the bridle) that is rigged through the center of the Echomaster so that it can be hoisted in the coined “Catch Rain” position… this is also shown (if you look carefully) in the Echomaster product image in the article. On the Davis site, the “Catch Rain” hanging mount is described as…

“#153 Deluxe Hanging Echomaster Anodized aluminum plates. Comes with hanging mount system to suspend unit from mast or rigging in perfect “catch rain” position. Vinyl storage case included. #157 Surface Mount System can be purchased separately”

As the article suggests we are no experts on radar reflectors or their performance, but just wanted to speak to some of the more functional ways of rigging/installing the various products so that they do not interfere with boats sailing systems as well as provide safety for the crew below on decks. Therefore, it is our belief that once the reader chooses the radar reflector(s) and follows the manufacturers guidelines along with our points on mounting them to a sailboat mast, they will have a product that is not only functional but will provide the user with years of trouble free use.

Readers are always urged to get more product specific information directly form the manufacturer. You can get more information on how to properly execute the Echomaster here… .

Thanks for the read.

The Radar reflector is one element of the measures boat owners should take to ensure that they can see other marine traffic and most importantly be seen by other marine traffic. It is clear from the Qinetic report on radar reflectors following the tragic loss of the yacht Ouzo south of the Isle of Wight on the 20/21 August 2006 that boat owners need to select a radar reflector with the biggest possible reflecting area to ensure that they can be seen by radar equipped ships. Furthermore the report confirms that the performance of the Echomaster and Mobri is rather poor and states that poor solutions whilst giving owners piece of mind may in fact do little to improve the boat’s visibility on radar! Cost and ease of installation should be of no importance in the debate. Consequently I would select the Tri-Lens readar reflector if I was selecting a passive reflector but a much better option (confirmed by the Qinectic report) is an dual band (X and S) active reflector such as the Echomax Radar Target Enhances (Echomax Active XS) or the SEA-ME Dual Band which are highly recommended in the Qinetic report..

I have a Firdell Blipper in the top of my mast – above the forestay, so out of the way of any sail. It has been there for 20 years now so your comments on the brackets sound strange to me. I sail on the very busy North Sea and I have never heard of ships or coastguard stations unable to find me on their radar. As a matter of fact I have hardly ever had to alter course when crossing shipping lanes because the other ships see me long before I see them and it seems they think my boat is much bigger then it really is (only 22 ft). So I have great confidence in my Firdell Blipper and already have one handy to mount on my next boat.

It is good to hear a success story with one of these. As the article says there is much controversy surrounding the many different radar reflector options. These are just the view points as we’ve experienced them. Putting the reflector above the headstay is a great idea…probably why it has lasted so long and works so well. There is nothing to mess with it up there and from what I understand the higher the better.

In regards to performance we know really very little hence the three articles cited that conducted testing on the various products.

That’s a big reflector for such a small boat no? What type of 22′ sailboat is this?

Thank you for taking the time. ~T.R.C.

I build n deliver boats in the gulf of mexico north and south the echo master is always in my delivery bag i dont trust anything else even if the boat im delivering has one i put my spare up also i keep mine polished for better radar reflection

That’s a smart boat delivery captain in my book. Thanks for taking the time Rick!

The Canadian Coast Guard and Practical Sailor also did test years ago and the small tubular reflectors did very poorly. We formerly operated a charter fleet and I would never install a Plastimo or Mobri. After a strong wind one night, I came onto the float and found pieces of a tubular reflector which had shattered.

They are easy to mount, however virtually useless, especially when heeled. Viki. the bag of foil would be of no help. You need precise 90 degree corners to reflect the radar signal.

Thanks for the comment. No question on the Mobri having tested poorly, all three of the linked sites say so too. As I said we just like these from a rigging point of view. Perhaps mounting two, as we always do, would improve some of these test results? Also, in my experience these are usually improperly mounted….almost always, hence they can come crashing down; this is the case with anything though, right? Not a one, in ten years of rigging offshore boats has come crashing down at least unbeknownst to me ;-0) Remember, we feel the key with these is to have them installed on a diagonal shroud so that when the boat heels at least one of the reflectors sits in the vertical position. I believe when used in conjunction with and properly rigged Echomaster beneath the spreader, you are really increasing your chances of being seen. In our opinion, this combination is probably the best possible set up for double spreader masts with aft swept spreaders, overlapping headsails, forward lowers, mast mounted radars with guards, or inner forestays, to help protect the hardware from becoming dislodged or damaged by the tacking sail.

Modern boats with non-overlapping headsails have much less issue here.

Having said that, especially if you do have a more traditional mast with fore and aft lowers, inner forestays, or radar with a guard, we have grown partial to the Rozendal Trilens. This seems to be a top performer in regards to the testing conducted by the various agencies. Of course conditions, type of radar scanner, heel, and more, are all factors in how well they test. The Rozendal Trilens is a very good quality reflector and now that it has the second mounting bracket, is a sturdier option for the front of sailboat mast.

What are some other good brands out there worth checking out for sailboat mast mounted radar reflectors?

Great post! We are in the market for a radar reflector. We don’t get much fog here in the South Island of New Zealand, however we were recently sailing down the coast on an overnight trip and when the sun rose we found we were completely shrouded in fog – and had no radar or radar reflector! After posting our plight on Facebook a friend suggested we hoist a bag of screwed up tin foil up the mast, which we subsequently did. It made us feel a bit better, but not sure that it was actually effective at all! I think we will get an echo master to have on board just in case on our next coastal passage. But for our next boat – the one we sail around the world in, the Mobri does look very sleek.

Thanks Viki! We have to send you a shirt or something, you are a great follower, our best for sure. Yes on the Echomaster. And 2 Mobri’s or a Tri-lens would be my recommendatio for the more permanent solution.

Email us for a FREE shirt ! Just tell me you and your husband’s size and shipping address (American Sizes, i.e. they may be a bit BIG lol, but they’ll shrink too)

Thanks for commenting and Happy Sailing! ~T.R.C.

Yay thank you! Do you think the tin foil up the mast would work? I have had a mixed reaction from people we told as to whether they thought it would work or not. It made us feel better anyway. I will send you a message. Love your blog :)

Lol…I really don’t know but….no I don’t think so.

Ha ha – damn! Ah well at least we didn’t get run over… ;)

Just don’t fold the foil into the shape of a stealth fighter.

Radar Reflector

radar reflector in lifeboat

Radar reflector is a device used in boating and maritime applications to enhance the visibility of vessels on radar systems. It works by reflecting the radar signals emitted by other vessels, ships, or land-based radar installations. Radar reflectors are crucial for small vessels, sailboats, and other boats that might not have a strong radar cross-section (RCS) naturally.

Asking $45,000 Call or e-mail to arrange a visit: [email removed] or leave a message on my skype phone at 315-254-2452. The boat is located near Syracuse, NY. For full ad go to: https://persephone37.wordpress.com/ Dreaming of living aboard and sailing off to the islands? Persephone is a beautiful, well-maintained, fully equipped, self-sufficient, center cockpit sloop ready for cruising. As a well equipped and comfortable long-term live aboard yacht, she has taken her current owners to the Caribbean and back to upstate New York a number of times- and now she’s ready to take you to your dream destinations. “Persephone” was designed as the perfect coastal cruising vessel… large enough to be very comfortable yet simple enough to be able to sail her by yourself… a perfect combination of comfort and function. Through years of cruising, thoughtful upgrades and enhancements, her current owners have produced an exceptional live aboard vessel. Her extensive upgrades and refurbishing over the years makes her the one of the best equipped cruisers you will find in this price range on the market. Seasoned sailors will immediately appreciate the new Awl Grip on the hull, and on deck the Lewmar 65 winches and deep comfortable center cockpit protected from the elements by a dodger and bimini. Her windlass makes anchoring simple, and after the anchor is down, a cold beverage from the custom refrigerator will be appreciated. Worried about your beverages warming up at anchor? Never fear- her solar panels and wind generator output provides more than enough power. Down below, she has a spacious salon with center folding dinette, 6' headroom that leads forward to a head and V-Berth. LED cabin lights and aluminum Lewmar port lights keep brighten the interior, day or night. Her two staterooms and two heads offers plenty of room, lots of privacy, and an abundance of storage. When the winds dies, she is equipped with a 32 hp Universal diesel engine, 2 fuel tanks with Racor filters, and two 100 gallon water tanks. Main Salon ***Pictures Below***** The main salon features settees, port and starboard, and a centerline table with folding leaves and storage. There are plenty of opening ports, and an overhead hatch to provide wonderful ventilation. There is a navigator’s station aft of the starboard settee and the galley is aft of the port settee. A large custom made marquetry sailboat scene graces the forward bulkhead to port. Master Stateroom The O’Day 37 has a unique aft cabin master stateroom entered from the cockpit. It is completely private with a wonderful queen size custom pillow-top spring mattress berth. There is a hanging locker to port with storage shelves adjacent to the locker and berth. Additional storage is provided by more shelves and drawers to starboard. Five opening ports, together with the aft cabin companionway, provide wonderful ventilation. A private ensuite head contains a manual head and a vanity sink as well as a single opening port and overhead hatch. Guest Stateroom The guest stateroom is forward in the forepeak and consists of a comfortable v-berth with filler, storage under and in drawers and on shelves. An overhead hatch and an opening port allows for great ventilation. There is a full-size hanging locker aft of this cabin and opposite the head. Galley The spacious well laid out u-shaped galley is to port forward of the companionway and opposite the navigation station. It features 2 deep sinks with a butcher block lid, 3 burner stove with oven, a microwave, and plenty of easy access storage. The large, sensible, easy access refrigerator/freezer has a stainless steel holding plate and is just aft of the navigation table. Cockpit By far, the most comfortable cockpit you’ll find. Deep coamings with just the right angle to sit back and enjoy the sailing or the sunset. The teak table provides room for entertaining and dining all under the shade of the bimini. 2 huge lockers provides storage for everything! The helm has superior visibility while underway. “Persephone” 1981 O’Day Center Cockpit Sloop Builder: O’Day Designer: C. Raymond Hunt Dimensions LOA: 37' LWL: 30’4? Beam: 11’3? Mainly personal effects etc. If you have any questions or wish to arrange an inspection feel free to contact me to discuss.________________________________________________________________________________ In answer to the many of the questions posed to me here are a few more details:- I've owned the boat for two years. Initially it was purchased in Houston with big plans to sail the Caribbean but life unfortunately got in the way. During that time I've refit many of the items on the boat and this is outlined above.- Yes the boat can be viewed in Key West, Florida, USA. For those that are interested message me and I'll give you the contact details of my local Key West broker.- The boat is currently Australian registered but will be de-registered as part of the sale. So the new owner can get the boat re-registered with the USCG.- Yes the boat is capable of offshore voyages, but no I wouldn't jump in this tomorrow and sail across the Pacific. Not due to any structural fault in the boat. I would add better water storage, a water maker, fit the wind vane, purchase some spare sails, fit a full bimini cover etc. before committing to such a voyage. Of course you would want to have had a lot of experience offshore before crossing the North Atlantic.- More images of the boat and the trips we've taken can be found at www.formosa46.com- No I will not trade for another boat unless someone has a similar size/condition vessel in Australia.- Yes the price is negotiable within reason as are the sale terms. Please contact me to discuss.- The boat is very well equipped with all the safety gear you could ever hope for and is in a good condition.

2001 J46 sailboat sail boat J-46 sailing cruiser racing fresh water. UPGRADES!

Charlevoix, Michigan

Make J Boats

Length 46.0

Beautiful, generously equipped and meticulously cared for freshwater J46 owned by senior couple. Used only for day sailing and minimal light cruising in northern Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Charlevoix for only 12 four month seasons (was not launched in 2012 and 2013). Always kept in inside heated storage when not in the water for the four month summer season. It is in pristine condition. J/46 may be the only investment grade sailing yacht of its size not requiring professional crew to sail at designed performance levels…..or to maintain. Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passage-making speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with 76hp diesel auxiliary. The joy of sailing the perfect boat is, after all, a goal we believe every owner ultimately seeks. To insure that good sailing days are spent sailing rather than scrubbing and varnishing, J/46 is designed to be virtually maintenance-free. Her exquisite joinerwork is protected from the sun……below decks where it’s beauty can be preserved More photos available in this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QEllizB6x4FKTe3kGwlbjYaLgJMrQEg8x6PdVtIa14Y/pub Factory Options: Refrigeration Package: -Seafrost Mechanical Refrigeration.-Additional Plates & controls for Freezer.-Supplementary 110VAC Shore power Assist. Helped by new materials and techniques, they evolve from the joint experiences of designer, builder and owners to become state-of-the-art. J/46 is such a vessel, inheriting the proven hull shape of the J/44, an offshore blue water classic, having won the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, NYYC Queen’s Cup and Trans-Atlantic races. J/44 is the only Class of yacht ever to be given its own class start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport-Bermuda Race. To create the J/46, a foot of sailing length is added for speed; a transom swim/boarding platform for convenience; a carbon fiber mast and low VCG 6.2’ shoal draft keel for more stability; and a resin-infused, composite hull and deck for greater strength. Below decks, the choice was clear, use the same beautifully varnished cherry or teak joiner work, entertainment center and styling so highly acclaimed in our deluxe J/160. J/46 is a maxi-Ditch yacht, the tallest yacht that can fit under the bridges of the Intra-Coastal WWaterway. Yet she is non-intimidating. A high length-to-beam ratio on the waterline of this sea-kindly yacht significantly improves tracking offshore in large waves and makes sail plan balance less critical. J/46 sails with either main or jib only, always responding predictably to a light touch on the helm. Sail power with good stability allows cruising with working jib rather than large genoa. That’s less work for the crew and improved visibility for the person on the helm. J Boats’ unique spinnaker system makes downwind sailing possible for two. A modern asymmetric spinnaker attaches to the top of the anchor roller, is contained within a cockpit-controlled snuffer, and is stored, ready-to-use, in the bow locker. The spinnaker is hoisted to the masthead, 2’ above the headstay intersect, leaving space for the snuffer to shift on a jibe. Jibing is then easy. One simply lets off one spinnaker sheet and pulls in the other.

1981 S-2 9.2C sailboat center cockpit Yanmar Wheel Full enclosure Lake Michigan

1981 S-2 9.2C sailboat center cockpit Yanmar Wheel Full enclosure Lake Michigan

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Model 9.2 C

Accommodations S-2 quality, famous for the quality of their boats. A rare center cockpit 30 footer. A great layout, and a quality boat. As you board the boat, you enjoy first the full canvas enclosure of the cockpit. Almost new, and custom designed by Boat Tailors, it surrounds the cockpit with windows and screens to provide all of the options and protection that you could ask. A great space that adds greatly to the usable space on the boat, Then going below, you notice the traditional look of the newer dark blue upholstery and the quality of the wood work. Starting forward, there is a vee berth. The vee berth, with the filler cushion, is partially open to the salon with a partial bulkhead. There is a large overhead opening hatch, and 2 opening ports. Each side has a shelf for your glasses etc., and reading lights on both sides. Next is the salon, with a centerline folding table. Both sides of the salon have shelves and storage behind the settees, and more storage under the seats. Moving aft along the starboard side, you find the head. It is a amazing head with a separate shower and tub stall (yes, an actual small tub). Roomy and light and very usable. The head extends aft past the companionway. Forward and to starboard of the companionway, we start with the galley. The galley extends along the port side of the passageway to the aft cabin. There is a 2 burner stove top, a S.S. sink and then the icebox. There is currently a microwave on the counter, and the current owner has put a small refrigerator next to it, on what is / was a seat for the nav table. Across from the galley and under the cockpit is the engine, with a completely removeable top, and 2 side panels for ease of access. Aquarius is easy to single hand, is great for day sailing yet sleeps five to six in four bunks (two in the fore-peak, one to two amidships, one on either side of the engine bay that has drop down sides for engine access). She's great for either a beginner or a seasoned sailor. O'Days are very popular, often raced, and there are several internet sites with information, forums and and offering of parts. I've had the pleasure of owning Aquarius for ten years now and I love her. We're relocating and after much procrastinating I realize that the ocean will just be too far way. The previous owners had her in Oyster Bay NY for many years. She is surprisingly fast yet very stable (2,230 lb lead keel) - although not suggested, we've powered through 6'-8' seas with her. She sails very close to the wind, is roomy with loads of storage, and you can stretch out on the 6'-6" cockpit seats with custom cushions (both with lockers beneath) or seat several. There's approximately 6' headroom. She has a 30 horse power Universal Atomic Four engine whereas most boats her size have either 9.9 HP outboards (which cavitate in lumpy water) or 7 to 13 HP diesels. She starts fast, runs clean. Uses about a gallon an hour. These are so popular that new parts are still made for it - even an optional hand crank! Here's one major source of new parts, service and info: moyermarine.com. She has a new jacket side plate from Moyer Marine. There's incredibly easy access to the engine from both sides and the front. There's even an engine "room" light. She has the original 12 gallon main gas tank along with the then optional 6 gallon plastic auxiliary tank (located on a shelf in the port side locker). Aquarius was made just before the cost of oil, gas and related resins sky-rocketed and caused many boat companies to skimp on construction and then to go out of business. Her hull is solid fiberglass - no balsa to worry about, and is about 3/8" thick. The prop is bronze. The prop shaft is bronze with a recent sacrificial zinc. I consider her the best year - 1975 had the best interior layout and has a lead ballasted fin keel with skeg mounted rudder (offering some protection to it). She has a 4' draft and nice freeboard which allows for usually dry sailing and calm guests.. My son worked at West Marine during school which gave us great discounts - she has new lifelines, new lazy jacks on the main boom, new main-sheet, new bronze thru-hull valves and Y-valve for the macerator toilet, new VHF radio, solar powered charger to keep her batteries charged between use, original Loran C, new coil and ignition parts, new water pump impeller, new engine exhaust pipe to the water muffler, new rubber diaphragm on her bilge pump, a cockpit tent in almost new shape, recent 12 volt receptacle, dual batteries with selector and gauge, tiller steering with nice looking new laminated wood tiller, old auto tiller, dual cockpit scuppers, cockpit cushions, anchor, teak and stainless steel swim ladder between the split stainless steel rear pulpit, auto-tiller, loads of storage, two sinks, cabin lights, electric macerator toilet between the fore peak and the main cabin with folding teak doors for privacy, curtains, cabin inclinometer, hanging locker, cockpit "table" (portable, that spans across the seats), storage under all the berths, a 12v hand vacuum, carpeting, a large ice box under a lid in the counter that drains to outside, alcohol stove plus a propane grill that attaches to hang off of the stern. There's a GPS/Depth sounder along with the original one that still works by a light revolving within its face and is entertaining to watch. There's roller furling, a wind vane and radio aerial atop the mast, stainless bow pulpit, a boom vang, a whisker pole for downwind sailing, genoa in reasonable shape, two jibs (one is older and a bit soiled), two mainsails (one also is older and a bit soiled). Two new stainless fishing rod holders, I've several life jackets, am/fm/cd stereo, full safety equipment including fire extinguishers, radar reflector ball, first aide kit, floodlight, Lifesling overboard rescue system, a flare gun, horn, boat hook etc. I can throw in a new medium sized dog life jacket if the buyer needs it. The upholstery is in very good condition. Loads of interior teak in good condition. The former owner gave us the original set of plastic dishes, silverware and ice tongs, and I'll give them to the new owner so they can stay with the boat. What I'm aware of: minor scars from dock battles etc, and a couple of soft deck spots which I was planning on repairing this season. The hardware & connections to the hull have been resealed over the years and should be checked. We had a problem with gunk in the main tank so we had it drained and we were planning on replacing it. We've been running off of the 6 gallon tank which has given us more than enough range. The sink hand pumps aren't working but I've a new electric pump to pressurize the system waiting to be installed (Whale offers refurbishment kits if you'd rather hand pump). The hatch boards are ready for replacement, last year there was minor weeping at the toilet - it may need tightening or a new gasket, and there's some minor rust here and there on the engine. Very little rain water weeps in from the ports - I do a yearly sealing but this year haven't gotten to it yet. She's a pretty dry boat. Aquarius has loads of spare parts including a new small holding tank for the toilet, new deck hardware along with a good-sized used winch for the cabin top to make single handling even easier, new electric water pump to pressurize the water system, new electric bilge pump - all ready to be installed. Obviously I love the boat - we weren't planning on moving from Brooklyn but the house that we've bought was an amazing deal in a historic small town and we realized that's where we want to semi-retire. She's out of the water in Gateway Marina (opposite Floyd Bennett Field) in Brooklyn open to the bay and to the ocean. The marina owes us a launch but it seemed to make sense to allow prospective buyers a look at her bottom. Here's more info: oday.sailboatowners.com, odayowners.com and iheartodays.com/model_oday_27 There was an ad in Craigslist for her but it was put in without my knowledge by a marina service employee. It was taken off. The boat is sold as is, and will need to be picked up or sailed from her location in Gateway Marina, Brooklyn, NY by the new owner. Storage and shipping arrangements are the responsibility of the purchaser. You may see the boat by appointment. She is fairly priced - serious offers only please. 1974 C&C 35 Mark II ****SOLD September 2014

1974 C&C 35 Mark II ****SOLD September 2014

Tacoma, Washington

75 C&C 35 mk II Chinook landing marina Rigging and sails, in good condition. Universal diesel in good condition with i about 900 hrs. Many details in description in links. Complete sail inventory of 14 extra sails is available. Only known issues or repairs needed are some wind instruments not working. This a SAILING sailboat, not a floating Winnebago that sails like a bar of soap. For those interested in racing: C&C 35 Mark I's had a PHRF rating of 130, the significantly larger stock Mark II's were said by the designers to rate 125 but sail much better. The Mark II has an 11 inch greater over length, more than 2 and a half FEET longer water line length, more freeboard, and 3,300 lbs greater displacement. Later built 35 Mark III's were down sized to Mark I dimensions , are much lighter built and hardware equipped, and while fast, are a major step backwards in quality in my opinion. Currently racing Mark II's seem to measure 126 to 128 seconds. The early stock 35 mark II's were criticized by some hard core racers looking for a slow rating advantage in a very fast boat. Some thought they were tender, and did not point high enough with huge racing headsails and the standard swept back keel. A number of them were modified with a slightly heavier full fin design with more lateral area that was a huge improvement in performance and handling . We can beat and reach with J-35 boats in the 70 seconds/mile class. We have not had this boat measured, but I expect that the improved keel would penalize the rating a few seconds, small price for the performance gain. This U S Coast Guard documented, 35 foot 6 inch classic cruiser/racer sailboat is one of C & C's most graceful, best built, and best performing designs. She is competitive with much newer and larger boats costing many times her price. Re-engined with low time (690 hr) Universal 3 cylinder 25 HP diesel, professionally rewired electrical system, and new ground fault isolator. Includes 15 Barient heavy duty winches and recently rebuilt main and roller furling cruising genoa. Completely equipped for cruising or club racing this boat comes with everything needed to sail away: electronics, anchors, autopilot, extra cordage, cabin heater, cockpit cushions, life jackets, even Puget Sound charts. This boat has been well maintained and equipped for every contingency. It competed successfully twice in the Victoria to Maui race and is well known and respected in the area. The original owner had a custom keel installed with more lateral area than the stock Mk II design, giving this boat even better stability and windward performance than the standard model's exceptional ability. The last surveys are excellent, with no blisters in her solid glass hull.DRACO RED, 1974 C & C 35 FT MRK II, HULL NO. Temperature

Precipitation, simulated historical climate & weather data for lytkarino.

  • History & Climate
  • Climate (modelled)

The meteoblue climate diagrams are based on 30 years of hourly weather model simulations and available for every place on Earth. They give good indications of typical climate patterns and expected conditions (temperature, precipitation, sunshine and wind). The simulated weather data have a spatial resolution of approximately 30 km and may not reproduce all local weather effects, such as thunderstorms, local winds, or tornadoes, and local differences as they occur in urban, mountainous, or coastal areas.

You can explore the climate for any location like the Amazon rainforest , West-Africa savannas , Sahara desert , Siberian Tundra or the Himalaya .

Hourly historical weather data since 1940 for Lytkarino can be purchased with history+ . Download variables such as temperature, wind, clouds and precipitation as CSV for any place on Earth.

Average temperatures and precipitation

The "mean daily maximum" (solid red line) shows the maximum temperature of an average day for every month for Lytkarino. Likewise, "mean daily minimum" (solid blue line) shows the average minimum temperature. Hot days and cold nights (dashed red and blue lines) show the average of the hottest day and coldest night of each month of the last 30 years. For vacation planning, you can expect the mean temperatures, and be prepared for hotter and colder days. Wind speeds are not displayed per default, but can be enabled at the bottom of the graph.

The precipitation chart is useful to plan for seasonal effects such as monsoon climate in India or wet season in Africa . Monthly precipitations above 150mm are mostly wet, below 30mm mostly dry. Note: Simulated precipitation amounts in tropical regions and complex terrain tend to be lower than local measurements.

Cloudy, sunny, and precipitation days

The graph shows the monthly number of sunny, partly cloudy, overcast and precipitation days. Days with less than 20% cloud cover are considered as sunny, with 20-80% cloud cover as partly cloudy and with more than 80% as overcast. While Reykjavík on Iceland has mostly cloudy days, Sossusvlei in the Namib desert is one of the sunniest places on earth.

Note: In tropical climates like in Malaysia or Indonesia the number of precipitation days may be overestimated by a factor up to 2.

Maximum temperatures

The maximum temperature diagram for Lytkarino displays how many days per month reach certain temperatures. Dubai , one of the hottest cities on earth, has almost none days below 40°C in July. You can also see the cold winters in Moscow with a few days that do not even reach -10°C as daily maximum.

Precipitation amounts

The precipitation diagram for Lytkarino shows on how many days per month, certain precipitation amounts are reached. In tropical and monsoon climates, the amounts may be underestimated.

The diagram for Lytkarino shows the days per month, during which the wind reaches a certain speed. An interesting example is the Tibetan Plateau , where the monsoon creates steady strong winds from December to April, and calm winds from June to October.

Wind speed units can be changed in the preferences (top right).

The wind rose for Lytkarino shows how many hours per year the wind blows from the indicated direction. Example SW: Wind is blowing from South-West (SW) to North-East (NE). Cape Horn , the southernmost land point of South America, has a characteristic strong west-wind, which makes crossings from East to West very difficult especially for sailing boats.

General information

Since 2007, meteoblue has been archiving weather model data. In 2014 we started to calculate weather models with historical data from 1985 onwards and generated a continuous 30-year global history with hourly weather data. The climate diagrams are the first simulated climate data-set made public on the net. Our weather history covers any place on earth at any given time regardless of availability of weather stations.

The data is derived from our global NEMS weather model at approximately 30km resolution and cannot reproduce detail local weather effects, such as heat islands, cold air flows, thunderstorms or tornadoes. For locations and events which require very high precision (such as energy generation, insurance, town planning, etc.), we offer high resolution simulations with hourly data through point+ , history+ and our API.

This data can be used under the Creative Commons license "Attribution + Non-commercial (BY-NC)". Any commercial use is illegal.

Radar reflectors can be mounted to the masts of boat cabins as well. To start to make sense of this, we need to delve into a bit of radar history, and have a rudimentary understanding of how it works.
