Captain - Adam Cunerd Adam started boating at the age of 8 with his family and neighbors on the Severn River just outside of Annapolis, MD. Water-skiing, fishing, and cruising were his favorite activities through the years, which expanded his knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. In his later teenage years and twenties, working at various marinas in the area, he became more involved in the handling, maintenance, and mechanics of boating. He attended Chapman’s School of Seamanship in Stuart, Florida, which helped him make his decision to work on private yachts as a professional crew member. Attaining his master’s license in 1993, he has traveled and gained cruising experience in the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, East Coast north to Nova Scotia, Canadian Maritimes, New England, the East Coast of Florida, Mississippi River, Ten Tom Waterway and its tributaries, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. With this experience he has gained the knowledge and skills to be a confident Master. Mate - Brandon Cavitt Brandon is from Nebraska and grew up going camping, fishing, and swimming. Brandon chose to come to Florida to pursue his career in the yachting industry. His goal for the future is to become an engineer. He is hard working, energetic, and personable. His hobbies consist of traveling, fishing, and water sports. Brandon will make sure you have a fun and eventful trip. Stewardess - Nicole Taylor Nicole grew up in southern Maryland. As a child she went boating and fishing with her family on the Chesapeake Bay. As an adult she settled in the Annapolis area and began her family. She has been taking part in various water activities all her life. She decided to begin a new adventure combining her love of the water and taking care of others and became a yacht stewardess in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Nicole gets gratification from giving exceptional service and taking care of the interior. Chef - Gail Murphy Gail was born in New York but grew up in Italy (Rome) and the South of France. She fell in love with the sea at an early age after sailing on her father’s sailboat along the coast of Italy. This is also where Gail gained her knowledge of Mediterranean cuisine and the different flavors of Europe. Gail learned how to cook onboard yachts and has been doing so for many years. Gail also owns her own catering business in Fort Lauderdale. Engineer - Emmanuel Rojas Emmanuel was born and raised in Venezuela. He is a family man with a wife and two small children. Over nine years ago he began his engineering career preserving the environment on oil tankers then passenger ships. He continued to learn and develop his knowledge which led to yachting where he works as a very skilled engineer.

Attaining his master’s license in 1993, he has traveled and gained cruising experience in the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, East Coast north to Nova Scotia, Canadian Maritimes, New England, the East Coast of Florida, Mississippi River, Ten Tom Waterway and its tributaries, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. He knows perfectly the sailing area of South-Eastern Turkey and islands of Greece. Apart from being a true professional, Captain Ersin has a debonair personality. He’s very friendly and communicative. He’s always there for the guests whenever they want to choose the best and the most interesting destination in the area, and ready to show a quiet secluded bay with crystal-clear turquoise water or an authentic village with some historical sights to explore and great restaurants to enjoy a wonderful culinary journey. One of the most favorite sailing areas for Ersin is Cyclades islands and the coast near Turkish little yachtsmen town Bozburun. Captain is very passionate about the sea and gulets. He’s been through the refit with “Virtuoso” and knows his yacht perfectly. He’s a true team leader having great relationships with his crew. First mate, Can (pron. Djan) Yurttaş is a very interesting and versatile young man coming originally from Kuşadası. Being only 21 years of age, he’s already doing his seventh season working in marine business, holds a captain’s license, speaks excellent English, and owns perfect service and hospitality skills. After high school Can also attended Maritime College of Kocaeli, like Captain Ersin. After the graduation, he took some additional training courses, successfully passed all necessary exams and received a license, which allows him to master a yacht. For his perseverance and high professionalism, Can has been promoted this year to the position of the first mate. He helps Captain and his teammates, participates in service and takes care of any questions, which may arise. Can is very kind and attentive. In his free time, Can loves bowling, fishing, walking outdoors and exploring new places. His younger brother is also a sailor and plans to make it a part of his lifetime career, just like his elder brother. Can really loves his job and is happy when guests are enjoying the most of their holiday aboard “Virtuoso”. Chef Mehmet Özgür Sert is a naturally gifted man. He is 34 years old and originally comes from a beautiful inland Turkish town Bolu, which is near the Black Sea. Being a chef is not only a lifetime profession for Mehmet, it is his true passion. Before starting to work aboard luxury charter yachts and cook culinary masterpieces for guests from all parts of the world, Mehmet worked in Istanbul. There he was mastering kitchens in luxury restaurants and hotels, always improving and polishing his skills. In wintertime, Mehmet comes back to Istanbul to spend time with his wife and two kids. Chef Mehmet doesn’t only please the tastes of his guests with various dishes of Turkish and Ottoman cuisines, Italian, French, and Japanese, but also with his own recipes. He loves using inspiration and experimenting with ingredients, tastes, and decors of his dishes. Mehmet is also excellent in pastry making. These are his own secrets, but we’d love to know how he makes those brownies and meringues so light and sweet to a turn. When not working, Mehmet loves being with his family, spending time near the sea and swimming, travelling and vising historical places. It is Chef Mehmet’s third year aboard “Virtuoso” luxury yacht. Eda Aras is working as a stewardess aboard “Virtuoso”. It is her first year in maritime business, but she’s already showing great performance. Eda is 20 years old, and she’s very perseverant young lady, who loves the sea, adores working with people and growing professionally. After high school in Kuşadası, she was enrolled in Maritime College of Kocaeli. Eda is happy with her choice. She says the job becomes more and more interesting for her and opens new horizons in life. This year Eda is responsible for keeping the staterooms in excellent condition during the charters and helping her teammates with service. She plans to continue working aboard the yacht and never stop mastering her skills to the top. When Eda has a free time, she spends it for reading books or fishing. Ali Özgür Kaya is 22 years of age. Aboard Virtuoso, he is working as a seaman. It is his second season with the crew. Ali is a professional young man, who’s helping Captain and his colleague Çağdaş to maintain “Virtuoso” in excellent condition, open sails when the wind is right, a guests with water sports. Ali has also graduated from a maritime college, and his life goal is to become a yacht captain. We believe Ali has all skills to achieve his goals. What makes him a great team member of the crew is his friendly smile and a strong belief in the integrity of teamwork. Çağdaş (pron. Tschaa-dash) Güneş is a also seaman, and it’s also his first year with Virtuoso. Although he’s been working aboard luxury yachts for the past six years. He shows excellent seaman skills and knows what a perfect service must be like. He is 24 years of age. Çağdaş comes from the northern part of Turkey, from a town called Kastamonu. That’s where he went to high school. Even though his hometown isn’t located by the sea, Çağdaş always loved the water. So, it is no wonder he’s chosen to dedicate his life to a marine profession. However, Çağdaş is expanding his horizons. After finishing maritime education and receiving a yacht captain license, Çağdaş began to study Tourism and Hospitality at the university. If Çağdaş has a free time, he’s happy to play football, listen to music and swim in some warm waters. Çağdaş has a very kind, friendly, and collected personality.

Ersin Kamış is spending his third year mastering a luxury sailing gulet “Virtuoso”. Ersin is 38 years old, and he’s been working as a captain for almost one third of his life. Being originally from Hopa, located at the Black Sea coast of Turkey, he completed his professional education in Maritime College of Kocaeli near Istanbul. At the age of 23 Ersin received his captain license, and since then he’s been working at luxury charter yachts sailing in the Easter Mediterranean. He knows perfectly the sailing area of South-Eastern Turkey and islands of Greece. Apart from being a true professional, Captain Ersin has a debonair personality. He’s very friendly and communicative. He’s always there for the guests whenever they want to choose the best and the most interesting destination in the area, and ready to show a quiet secluded bay with crystal-clear turquoise water or an authentic village with some historical sights to explore and great restaurants to enjoy a wonderful culinary journey. One of the most favorite sailing areas for Ersin is Cyclades islands and the coast near Turkish little yachtsmen town Bozburun. Captain is very passionate about the sea and gulets. He’s been through the refit with “Virtuoso” and knows his yacht perfectly. He’s a true team leader having great relationships with his crew. <br /> <br /> First mate, Can (pron. Djan) Yurttaş is a very interesting and versatile young man coming originally from Kuşadası. Being only 21 years of age, he’s already doing his seventh season working in marine business, holds a captain’s license, speaks excellent English, and owns perfect service and hospitality skills. After high school Can also attended Maritime College of Kocaeli, like Captain Ersin. After the graduation, he took some additional training courses, successfully passed all necessary exams and received a license, which allows him to master a yacht. For his perseverance and high professionalism, Can has been promoted this year to the position of the first mate. He helps Captain and his teammates, participates in service and takes care of any questions, which may arise. Can is very kind and attentive. In his free time, Can loves bowling, fishing, walking outdoors and exploring new places. His younger brother is also a sailor and plans to make it a part of his lifetime career, just like his elder brother. Can really loves his job and is happy when guests are enjoying the most of their holiday aboard “Virtuoso”. <br /> <br /> Chef Mehmet Özgür Sert is a naturally gifted man. He is 34 years old and originally comes from a beautiful inland Turkish town Bolu, which is near the Black Sea. Being a chef is not only a lifetime profession for Mehmet, it is his true passion. Before starting to work aboard luxury charter yachts and cook culinary masterpieces for guests from all parts of the world, Mehmet worked in Istanbul. There he was mastering kitchens in luxury restaurants and hotels, always improving and polishing his skills. In wintertime, Mehmet comes back to Istanbul to spend time with his wife and two kids. Chef Mehmet doesn’t only please the tastes of his guests with various dishes of Turkish and Ottoman cuisines, Italian, French, and Japanese, but also with his own recipes. He loves using inspiration and experimenting with ingredients, tastes, and decors of his dishes. Mehmet is also excellent in pastry making. These are his own secrets, but we’d love to know how he makes those brownies and meringues so light and sweet to a turn. When not working, Mehmet loves being with his family, spending time near the sea and swimming, travelling and vising historical places. It is Chef Mehmet’s third year aboard “Virtuoso” luxury yacht. <br /> <br /> Eda Aras is working as a stewardess aboard “Virtuoso”. It is her first year in maritime business, but she’s already showing great performance. Eda is 20 years old, and she’s very perseverant young lady, who loves the sea, adores working with people and growing professionally. After high school in Kuşadası, she was enrolled in Maritime College of Kocaeli. Eda is happy with her choice. She says the job becomes more and more interesting for her and opens new horizons in life. This year Eda is responsible for keeping the staterooms in excellent condition during the charters and helping her teammates with service. She plans to continue working aboard the yacht and never stop mastering her skills to the top. When Eda has a free time, she spends it for reading books or fishing. <br /> <br /> Ali Özgür Kaya is 22 years of age. Aboard Virtuoso, he is working as a seaman. It is his second season with the crew. Ali is a professional young man, who’s helping Captain and his colleague Çağdaş to maintain “Virtuoso” in excellent condition, open sails when the wind is right, a guests with water sports. Ali has also graduated from a maritime college, and his life goal is to become a yacht captain. We believe Ali has all skills to achieve his goals. What makes him a great team member of the crew is his friendly smile and a strong belief in the integrity of teamwork.<br /> <br /> Çağdaş (pron. Tschaa-dash) Güneş is a also seaman, and it’s also his first year with Virtuoso. Although he’s been working aboard luxury yachts for the past six years. He shows excellent seaman skills and knows what a perfect service must be like. He is 24 years of age. Çağdaş comes from the northern part of Turkey, from a town called Kastamonu. That’s where he went to high school. Even though his hometown isn’t located by the sea, Çağdaş always loved the water. So, it is no wonder he’s chosen to dedicate his life to a marine profession. However, Çağdaş is expanding his horizons. After finishing maritime education and receiving a yacht captain license, Çağdaş began to study Tourism and Hospitality at the university. If Çağdaş has a free time, he’s happy to play football, listen to music and swim in some warm waters. Çağdaş has a very kind, friendly, and collected personality. Being originally from Hopa, located at the Black Sea coast of Turkey, he completed his professional education in Maritime College of Kocaeli near Istanbul. At the age of 23 Ersin received his captain license, and since then he’s been working at luxury charter yachts sailing in the Easter Mediterranean. He knows perfectly the sailing area of South-Eastern Turkey and islands of Greece. Apart from being a true professional, Captain Ersin has a debonair personality. He’s very friendly and communicative. He’s always there for the guests whenever they want to choose the best and the most interesting destination in the area, and ready to show a quiet secluded bay with crystal-clear turquoise water or an authentic village with some historical sights to explore and great restaurants to enjoy a wonderful culinary journey. One of the most favorite sailing areas for Ersin is Cyclades islands and the coast near Turkish little yachtsmen town Bozburun. Captain is very passionate about the sea and gulets. He’s been through the refit with “Virtuoso” and knows his yacht perfectly. He’s a true team leader having great relationships with his crew. <br /> <br /> First mate, Can (pron. Djan) Yurttaş is a very interesting and versatile young man coming originally from Kuşadası. Being only 21 years of age, he’s already doing his seventh season working in marine business, holds a captain’s license, speaks excellent English, and owns perfect service and hospitality skills. After high school Can also attended Maritime College of Kocaeli, like Captain Ersin. After the graduation, he took some additional training courses, successfully passed all necessary exams and received a license, which allows him to master a yacht. For his perseverance and high professionalism, Can has been promoted this year to the position of the first mate. He helps Captain and his teammates, participates in service and takes care of any questions, which may arise. Can is very kind and attentive. In his free time, Can loves bowling, fishing, walking outdoors and exploring new places. His younger brother is also a sailor and plans to make it a part of his lifetime career, just like his elder brother. Can really loves his job and is happy when guests are enjoying the most of their holiday aboard “Virtuoso”. <br /> <br /> Chef Mehmet Özgür Sert is a naturally gifted man. He is 34 years old and originally comes from a beautiful inland Turkish town Bolu, which is near the Black Sea. Being a chef is not only a lifetime profession for Mehmet, it is his true passion. Before starting to work aboard luxury charter yachts and cook culinary masterpieces for guests from all parts of the world, Mehmet worked in Istanbul. There he was mastering kitchens in luxury restaurants and hotels, always improving and polishing his skills. In wintertime, Mehmet comes back to Istanbul to spend time with his wife and two kids. Chef Mehmet doesn’t only please the tastes of his guests with various dishes of Turkish and Ottoman cuisines, Italian, French, and Japanese, but also with his own recipes. He loves using inspiration and experimenting with ingredients, tastes, and decors of his dishes. Mehmet is also excellent in pastry making. These are his own secrets, but we’d love to know how he makes those brownies and meringues so light and sweet to a turn. When not working, Mehmet loves being with his family, spending time near the sea and swimming, travelling and vising historical places. It is Chef Mehmet’s third year aboard “Virtuoso” luxury yacht. <br /> <br /> Eda Aras is working as a stewardess aboard “Virtuoso”. It is her first year in maritime business, but she’s already showing great performance. Eda is 20 years old, and she’s very perseverant young lady, who loves the sea, adores working with people and growing professionally. After high school in Kuşadası, she was enrolled in Maritime College of Kocaeli. Eda is happy with her choice. She says the job becomes more and more interesting for her and opens new horizons in life. This year Eda is responsible for keeping the staterooms in excellent condition during the charters and helping her teammates with service. She plans to continue working aboard the yacht and never stop mastering her skills to the top. When Eda has a free time, she spends it for reading books or fishing. <br /> <br /> Ali Özgür Kaya is 22 years of age. Aboard Virtuoso, he is working as a seaman. It is his second season with the crew. Ali is a professional young man, who’s helping Captain and his colleague Çağdaş to maintain “Virtuoso” in excellent condition, open sails when the wind is right, a guests with water sports. Ali has also graduated from a maritime college, and his life goal is to become a yacht captain. We believe Ali has all skills to achieve his goals. What makes him a great team member of the crew is his friendly smile and a strong belief in the integrity of teamwork.<br /> <br /> Çağdaş (pron. Tschaa-dash) Güneş is a also seaman, and it’s also his first year with Virtuoso. Although he’s been working aboard luxury yachts for the past six years. He shows excellent seaman skills and knows what a perfect service must be like. He is 24 years of age. Çağdaş comes from the northern part of Turkey, from a town called Kastamonu. That’s where he went to high school. Even though his hometown isn’t located by the sea, Çağdaş always loved the water. So, it is no wonder he’s chosen to dedicate his life to a marine profession. Safety Requirements :

South Florida’s vast Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) touches many of the East Coast’s most popular water destinations— including—you guessed it—Fort Lauderdale! If you’re unfamiliar with navigating the ICW, consider booking your rental with a professional captain. Whether you are at the helm yourself or you opt for a captain, the ICW is a gateway to discover Fort Lauderdale's inland bays, party coves, and popular sandbars; not to mention the numerous great waterfront restaurants. Whether your crew is young and ready to party, or you’re a family looking for relaxation and leisure, the ICW offers something for everyone.

Wake Zone : Navigating the Intracoastal Waterway for the first time can be intimidating for some. You’ll want to be aware of channel markers, wake zones, and other aids to navigation that can help you along the way. Also be sure to read our helpful  Guide to Navigating Florida’s ICW .

Pro Tip : The ICW is thousands of miles long, needless to say, there’s much to do and see here. Make the best out of your day on the water in Fort Lauderdale and book a full-day boat rental.

Anchor at the Famous Fort Lauderdale Sandbar

If this is your first time boating in Fort Lauderdale, you won’t want to miss visiting one of three popular local sandbars: the Fort Lauderdale Sandbar (also known as the ‘Triangle;’ within the New River), Lake Sylvia (south of Bahia Mar), and the sandbar on Whiskey Creek (near John Lloyd State Park). Make sure to stock up your cooler with your favorite drinks, adult beverages, and plenty of water. You could also bring aboard a couple of subs from your favorite deli, or order directly from Jay’s Sandbar Foodboat, which is anchored and open for business every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 8pm.

Pro Tip : The first sandbar is located at the intersection of New River. Our team recommends arriving at the sandbar before noon to secure a primate location. Be sure you anchor your boat outside of the nearby channel.

Sight-see and dock-and-dine along the New River

You’ll be tempted to dock at many of Fort Lauderdale’s iconic restaurants on your cruise downtown along the New River. To go bar hopping by boat here, be sure to book a boat with a captain who can be your sober skipper and local tour guide. Dock at Boathouse to enjoy the views of water traffic while you sip on a glass of their fine house wine. Next, go to the Pirates Republic Seafood Restaurant and order the house’s popular exotic drink: Caprinha. End your New River adventure at Marti’s New River Bistro for their delectable shrimp bloody mary.

Pro Tip:  The best time of day to go bar hopping on New River is between the hours of 11am and 2pm or 5pm and 7pm.

Where to go Boating in Fort Lauderdale

Lake Sylvia

Lake Sylvia is a hidden gem located just off the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW),  north of Fort Lauderdale. Hop on a pontoon with the family and enjoy the small crowd of sunkissed Floridians that hang out here (don’t worry parents—this is a very family-friendly environment, you won’t find much of a party crowd here). If you have small children pack their floaties, the waters of Lake Sylvia are protected, warm and gentle. You and your crew will most likely be hungry after all the fun, nearby Lake Slyvia is Boatyard, a waterfront steakhouse with specialty beverages, and dishes even the kids will enjoy. 

Dockage : Leaving from the southwest corner, boaters can head west on the canal under the 7' bridge. Once you continue up the ICW, you can enter the canal just south of SE 15th Street where you’ll find a public boat ramp at Cox’s Landing.

Pro Tips : The water depth in Lake Sylvia can vary greatly depending on your location. Be sure to keep an eye on your depth finder and look for shallow areas.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Also fondly known as Fort Lauderdale's 'Central Park,' Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is the green speck amid a concrete jungle located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. To get here by boat, and cruise around Sunrise Bay or Coral Bay. On one side of the bay, you'll have the thick tropical hammock trees of Hugh Birch Taylor State Park; on the other side, you'll see Fort Lauderdale's famous luxury waterfront mansions. There are many more spots, like the Bonnet House and Garden, sitting just south of Coral Bay! This is a highly attractive area, so you'll likely see many others oohing and aahing at all the beauty surrounding them. 

Dockage :  Yes - the park has a public floating dock and pavilion so boaters can access the park via the Intracoastal Waterway.

Pro Tips : Fishing is allowed in the park, but be sure to keep an eye out for 'No Fishing' signs. No fishing is permitted in waters within the interior of the park, such as the mangroves or the coastal dune lake.

G etting Ready to Celebrate a New Beginning!

We are getting there! As we get closer to reopening our Charter and School operations we want to thank everyone again for all the support over the last nine months! As we said right after the storm we look forward to celebrating our 40th Anniversary with all of you later this year and throughout 2024 and we are getting closer to that goal! We plan to have a very much scaled-down operation returning by October/ November, 2023! We can't wait to see all of you again. Please keep us in mind when you make any future boating plans!

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support!  As I wrote in January, we are in the process of rebuilding and making great progress!  We will be adding a new vessel to the fleet on May 1, 2023!  The Silverton 43 is a gorgeous double-cabin, double-head motor yacht with twin engines and generator.  She is beautifully decorated and will please the entire crew when you take her out on your next charter!  We will be posting photos, rates an availability in late April.  Stay tuned!

We will also be adding several other new yachts to the fleet in the months ahead and will be sending out "Berth Announcements" as those vessels join our program.  We also have several boats that were in the fleet prior to the storm that are undergoing repairs and should be ready to cruise by Fall, 2023!

As soon as we have boats available we will again begin to offer our sail and power courses.  As we stated earlier this year, we plan to be up and running to celebrate our 40th Anniversary in 2024.  Please join us then!

Making it Home: Navigating the Road to Recovery

I have been watching various interviews with Benjamin Hall, the Fox News reporter who was almost killed in Ukraine one year ago when several bombs hit the car that he and his colleagues were riding in. His two colleagues died and Benjamin sustained serious injuries, including losing one leg and his foot on the other leg. He has a new book out now entitled: “SAVED: A War Reporter's Mission to Make it Home”. 

In the book he describes what happened to him, gives kudos to the people who helped get him to safety following the blast and his journey through recovery and finally making it home to his family. Each time I have heard Ben speak about his experience I have been moved by his courage, humility and positive attitude. What kept him going? He says that from the moments after the attack and all through his surgeries (at least 20 so far) he just kept his focus on going home. "Home" for him was back to England to be with his wife and three young daughters ages 3, 5 and 7! His strength and his optimism have inspired me even more to be grateful for all that we have been through the last six months after surviving Hurricane Ian. 

While we lost our physical home, we have been on a journey to make it to a spiritual "home," if you will. That home would be a place of peace knowing that we had done everything we could to repair, renew and rebuild. How can we be grateful for a disaster that took our home, our cars, our boats and severely damaged our business? First of all, we survived! We, along with friends who were staying with us, all of our pets and our neighbors, emerged the day after the storm with stories to tell, but only a few scrapes and scratches. Moreover, we have a new appreciation for simplifying our life by doing without all the "stuff" we thought we needed to be happy.

Since September 28, 2022 there have been many extremely difficult and frustrating moments working through the repairing, replacing and rebuilding process to be sure. However, through the pain and heartache we have received many blessings that we never expected. We received cards and emails of support as well as donations to our GoFundMe page from friends as well as from people we don't even know. As I tell everyone who has reached out to us, their support has meant more that they know.

Six months ago I could not have imagined where the road from this disaster would take us. Now that we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel we are once again excited about the future. Having weathered the physical, mental and emotional storms that the Hurricane brought we know now that there is nothing we can't overcome. Of course there are many more challenges ahead, but we have faith that the good will outweigh the bad as we move forward. Personally, I no longer listen to the naysayers. Those are the people who bring only negative energy into our world. By focusing on the positive steps forward we are ensuring that we stay motivated toward reaching our goals and rebuilding our lives. My motto throughout this process has been to "take a step forward each week." There were times when those positive steps were few and far between; however, each time we were successful we celebrated! Whether it was closing out one insurance claim, purchasing a car or finally getting our office phones repaired as we did just last week, each victory was a step closer to being "home."

Everyone goes through difficult times in their life. We are not the only ones who have faced a disaster like a hurricane. There are thousands of people dealing with their own "storms" each and every day. Whether you are facing an illness, the death of a loved one, a natural disaster or anything else you can navigate your way home through hard work and a positive attitude. Getting "home" may mean different things to different people. Some people may be working toward better health or a better relationship or even more financial security. If you are facing challenges in your life, continue to navigate the road to recovery with a hard work and a positive attitude and you will make it "home" as well.

A New Year's Resolution:  Recover, Rebuild and Reopen!

This is a New Year like no other at Southwest Florida Yachts. This is typically the time when we all make those resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, read more books or spend more time with family. For all of us here at SFY our Resolution is much simpler. Our resolution involves the three R's - Recover, Rebuild and Reopen!

More than 90 days after the storm we are still in the Recovery mode. Many of us are still working with insurance companies, working to save property and belongings and trying to put the infrastructure of our lives back together such as shelter, cars, phones and computers to name a few. We are still waiting for sunken boats to be removed and for mounds of debris to be hauled away. It is no easy task to recover from the worst Hurricane Florida has ever seen and I know that many of you may not understand the scope of the devastation in our area. Nor do some people realize that the recovery continues long after the photos fade from the pages of the newspapers and the nightly news.

Personally I have been shocked by some of the negative email comments that I have received. I won't share any of those posts here as this is a message of Hope for the future. Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of you have offered your kind words of support to all of us at SFY. However, a small minority have used email and social media to criticize us for the time it is taking to rebuild and reopen. As hurtful as it is to see these comments, I try to focus on the positive.

We have worked every day since September 28, 2022 to put one foot in front of the other and move forward both personally and professionally. It only takes a few hours to lose everything in your life; however, I now know that it can take months and perhaps years to work through the recovery process.

Nothing about this disaster has been easy and I would not wish such devastation on anyone. Make no mistake however; this is not about gaining sympathy for our plight. As I write this, tornados have killed many people in the South and have destroyed communities. Disastrous weather has impacted the West Coast for weeks now with flooding, mudslides and wind damage. The Northeast recently experienced life-threatening conditions during a blizzard and record snowfall. We are not the only ones who have ever suffered from a disaster and will not be the last.

The second "R" of our Resolution is for Rebuilding. We have already begun the rebuilding process in earnest. Our Nautical Boutique opened on November 20, 2022, but without flooring. Sometimes you have to improvise! Water intrusion made it necessary to take up our floors, but fortunately for us cement floors are very popular these days! In fact, most customers do not even notice the missing laminate flooring. They are just happy that we are open! While our Charter and School operations have not reopened; we hope to have our office operational soon. It has taken much longer than expected to put all of the pieces of the business back together. I may have been overly optimistic when I said that we would be open by now. Until one goes through something like this I don't think anyone could imagine time, energy and resources that it takes to successfully chart a course to a brighter future. We are navigating our way forward every day!

We are also working to Rebuild our fleet! As many of you know, two vessels sank and many others have varying degrees of damage. Some of the yachts we hope to have back in service within months; however, for others the repairs will take longer. As SOON as we have a better handle on the repair timeline we will let everyone know which boats will be back and when they will be in service. You can imagine how overloaded the repair facilities are now with thousands of vessels needing work. We are still working through the repair process.

Finally, we do plan to Reopen! As we said right after the storm we look forward to celebrating our 40th Anniversary with all of you later this year and throughout 2024! We can't wait to see all of you again and we want to thank you in advance for supporting us with your future boating plans. Advertised by DMA Yachting, the breathtaking charter yacht HOUBARA is a 78 ft sailing catamaran featuring a jetski. The key elements of HOUBARA are her elegant profile and alfresco dining areas. HOUBARA spends the winter season in US Virgin Islands. She was delivered by the ship builder Sunreef Yachts in 2012. A comprehensive refit was finalized in 2024. HOUBARA is classified primarily as a sailing catamaran. The central space of the yacht is the main saloon, which connects to the aft deck. Beginning his career as a deckhand aboard 206ft KOLAHA, he was promoted to First Mate aboard the 175ft DRUMBEAT, assisting the owner in the Eastern Pacific. He then became captain aboard several sail and motor vessels across the summer and winter charter season, including the Lagoon 560 CAPERIC 4, DARWIN SOUND and the Azimut 62 WHITE PEARL. His wide-range experience thus showcases his adeptness in handling different vessels across various sea conditions. He has further worked as an engineer aboard the 100ft LUNAR MIST and 108 ft EUGENIA, highlighting his strong technical expertise. Guests can rest assured of being in safe hands aboard HOUBARA with Jerome at the helm as captain. Job Description Jerome is responsible for navigation, safety, the overall running and financial management of the vessel, crew, and guests. He always ensures the safe and efficient operation of HOUBARA, including compliance with all procedures and regulations that keep our guests safe. He takes care of adhering to flag regulations, port state and local laws and regulations, and manages the crew to ensure adherence to, and a full understanding of, the catamaran’s policies. Antoine's passion for delivering exceptional service led him to explore opportunities abroad, where he worked at the Discothèque MV Lounge in Nouméa, New Caledonia. His experience extends to premium establishments like the Hôtel Le Savoie in Val d'Isère, where he served as a bartender at the Wine Not bar. His most recent experience includes serving as a steward last summer aboard LA DAME DES TROPIQUES, which inspired him to explore working within the maritime sector. Job Description As the steward, Antoine is responsible for organisation, management, and cleanliness of all interiors. He maintains an accurate record of all service items and supplies and ensures cleaning and preparation of the vessel to the highest standards prior to all guest trips. He oversees vessel provisioning for both guests and crew, and all aspects of life aboard the vessel. When guests are onboard, he ensures that all their requirements and desires are met. He further offers a particular attention to detail and has a polite and entertaining spirit. Licenses and Certificates - CFBS

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled).
