Through the Ages: Van der Valk Shipyard
By Heather Collier
Over the course of the past five decades, Dutch shipyard Van der Valk has risen to great prominence within the superyacht industry, crafting a range of striking steel and aluminium vessels that have stood the test of time.
Van der Valk owes its unwavering success to a number of factors, one of them being its dedicated team throughout the generations that has continually evolved, and worked tirelessly to ensure that each partnership produces a superior product.
This world-renowned shipyard has always led with the sentiment that yachts must be safe, comfortable, innovative and efficient for those on board.
Through a perfectly calculated blend of science, technology, fine craftsmanship and close cooperation, Van der Valk is able to bring each owner's vision to life, all whilst considering price-quality ratio.
The Netherlands remains a sailing powerhouse, and has been so for many centuries. The word "yacht" is derived from the Dutch word "jaght", meaning to "chase". The yacht was said to be first invented by the Dutch in the 14th century, a vessel that could be used for various pursuits, which over time became a means for adventuring, particularly amongst Europe's wealthiest.
For Founder Wim Van der Valk, it all began with a similar "chase"; to channel that very same passion for yachting for pleasure, and for the pursuit of watersports. Founded in 1967, the yard gradually began to attract attention from the yachting community on a huge scale, most notably for its creation of cabin and aft cabin design cruisers from 7 to 10m.
With a rich heritage rooted in humble beginnings, Van der Valk has now amassed a global fleet of over 1000 motor yachts, and is still the only Dutch yard that builds vessels only within the 18-45m range.
With a growing reputation, Van der Valk quickly became a staple yacht builder throughout the 1970's, most famous for the Valkkruiser, Comfort, Royal, Falcon and Super Falcon, all of which became a shining example and shorthand for quality within the industry.
By the mid 1980's, Van der Valk had launched its next venture, the Vitesse series. This series proved to be an impressive set of steel and aluminium semi-displacement motor yachts for high-end buyers. Boasting elements of progressive design, unique sailing characteristics and high resale value, the series soon became a global success.
The Continental I series, most prevalent throughout the 1990's, has now evolved into the shipyard's signature aesthetic. Hundreds were crafted for owners worldwide, complimented by the exterior design expertise of Guido de Groot, allowing Van der Valk to enter superyacht territory.
Van der Valk continues to be praised for its forward thinking and innovation, not only for its distinctive appearance and designs, but its implementation of new technologies. The shipyard was the first to install two-axis fin anti-roll stabilisers, featured on the 37-metre Santa Maria T, launched back in 2013.
The yard was also one of the first to recognise the potential of the revolutionary Volvo Penta IPS propulsion when it was introduced, developing a special hull and new models for this drive system.
Van der Valk is a true gem of the yachting world, a Dutch pedigree builder of luxury yachts that offers clients an unprecedented level of customisation.
Van der Valk’s facilities are located in Waalwijk, the Netherlands, just an hour drive from Amsterdam. Five state-of-the-art production halls are used for welding, assembly, electrical systems, piping and furniture installation.
We look forward to seeing more Van der Valk milestones hit the water.

Weekends will never be the same again thanks to the receipt of a new bespoke order by repeat clients that will also be developed into a brand-new Van der Valk series.
The first EDGE 65 is already under construction for the owners and we’ve also begun the build of a second hull.
Larger models are under development too…
The launch model of the EDGE 65 will serve as a sister vessel to our 90-foot LeVen. This was built for the owner’s parents in 2019, while the 34-metre tri-deck explorer Lady Lene was delivered to his grandparents in 2021. All the family’s superyachting experience is being deployed on the EDGE 65 to create the ultimate weekender for their favourite cruising area of the Bahamas in partnership with Van der Valk, exterior designer Cor D. Rover, interior designer Carla Guilhem and Studio Delta Naval Architects.
The EDGE 65 will combine a 40-knot top speed with the ability to make ocean crossings in comfort while also exploring shallow waters. With a fold-out platform spanning some 48 square metres of deck space offering the ultimate in outdoor life, this is a very special project.
The yacht’s draught of under three feet will open up all but the shallowest waters, while a top speed of 40 knots hastens deep water runs. Power will be provided by four Mercury V12 Verados outboards, offering an exhilarating total of 2400 hp.
“It’s unusual for a Dutch yard to install these engines on a luxury yacht of this size and the EDGE 65 will be the heaviest possible size that could be propelled by outboards,” says Van der Valk general manager Bram Kooltjes. “Mercury Marine’s new automatic gear shift technology allows us to come to just over 30 tonnes while retaining the outdoor and indoor real estate required by the owners. We’ve optimised every aspect of the yacht to benefit speed and reduce underwater friction, and she’s going to be an awesome sight in every respect.”
In good step
This powerful performance will be accompanied by superb seakeeping comfort after we teamed up with Swedish company Petestep to utilise its revolutionary hull technology for the first time on a Van der Valk.
“Combining such speeds on a 65-footer with superyacht standards of comfort was a very exacting brief,” says Petestep CEO Jonas Danielsson. “We worked closely with CFD software experts on an extensive series of simulations to see how the boat would behave in all kinds of water. This involved calculating the resistance and pressure components of some five million air and water cells as they interacted with the design. Each simulation took between half and one day to complete and we carried out around fifty for this project.”
The resulting data led to the decision to add three Petestep deflectors to the hull, fitted in a V-shape to push water down and aft. The EDGE 65 will have a lower wetted surface, greater degree of lift and forward thrust from the redirection of the spray. The overall result is a major reduction in resistance, a boost to the speed, a dry ride for those onboard and a 30% reduction in slamming. “It’s really good to work with a reputable yard like Van der Valk on this project,” adds Jonas. “The EDGE 65 can open up a new market for large luxury boats that are relatively fast and allow for both shallow water access and ocean trips.”
Close to the water
Exterior designer Cor D. Rover is equally enthusiastic about the EDGE 65. “Together with the owners we’ve designed a kind of cabana on the water with an optimised amount of enclosed real estate and the option to be as close to the water as possible on a 20-metre boat. The large aft deck morphs into an outdoor pleasure platform with fold-down balconies creating eight square metres extra space. This arrangement will ease launching of the watersports gear, which the outboards would otherwise make impossible in this area. A crane on the flybridge enables the yacht to carry a small tender and/or jet ski.
“Nothing is new here in itself but the combination of all these aspects in this size most certainly is. I truly think that the EDGE 65 is going to be the best possible boat for the Bahamas and similar areas.”
This first EDGE 65 will have an Aston Martin Racing Green hull colour to make the yacht look like she is being absorbed by the water. This custom choice will add further panache to the powerful and sporty exterior design with a masculine feel that perfectly matches her feminine interior.
Smooth blend
The interior features a unique take on an Art Deco-inspired beach style, as designer Carla Guilhem explains. “The owners have no interest in a traditional lounge, preferring to entertain guests in a country kitchen galley arrangement with bar. They know people spend very little time indoors when day-tripping around the Caribbean and, when they do venture inside, they will have an informal place to sip cocktails and gather around the island chatting.”
This relaxed vibe will be heightened by a blend of modern-classic marine elements with a colorful beach feel. A natural style prevails with lots of oak wood, clean grey & white tones, round corners and textured panels. A few darker tones are found in the ensuite master and the two cabins with a shared bathroom. “The queen-size bed in the master suite has been shaped to remove any sensation of triangularcita,” says Carla. ” It’s all part of an approach aimed at generating relaxed open rooms that will feel very spacious for a 65-footer on overnight trips.
Future plans
While Carla is developing a beautifully bespoke interior for this EDGE 65, other options will be available for future owners. You can also opt for a two-cabin layout with a larger master suite with bathroom if preferred. Solar panels placed fore of the latter will boost your independence and reduce generator use.
An inboard propulsion option is also available, benefiting from the huge amount of engineering and thinking that has gone into this launch model. The second EDGE 65 is available for you to shape to your own vision so get in touch to explore the options.

Your World, Your Yacht
- By Rebecca Cahilly-Taranto
- May 15, 2024
Custom yachtbuilding is not for the faint of heart. It requires knowledge and expertise—not only on the part of the builder, but ideally on the part of the client as well.
Custom yachtbuilding also requires resources—both financial and in facilities and technology. And last but not least, a custom yachtbuild must have solid naval architecture, a well-planned layout, mechanical efficiency, and, oh yes, seaworthiness to ensure a return on investment if and when it enters the resale market.
It’s for these reasons that the world’s leading custom yachtbuilders concentrate, for the most part, on larger builds in the 50-plus-meter arena. Nestled in the southern region of The Netherlands, Van der Valk Shipyard is the anomaly to this theorem.
As one of the only shipyards in the world focused solely on building fully bespoke motoryachts between 25 and 45 meters (82 and 147 feet), Van der Valk not only has experience and expertise, but its builds are also backed by a pedigree defined by solid design and engineering, partner collaborations with the world’s leading designers, and state-of-the-art facilities. Yes, they are Dutch. But the 100-strong team at this family-founded shipyard is quick to point out that its prowess in yachtbuilding extends far beyond heritage.
About That Heritage
Van der Valk was the vision of Wim van der Valk, an avid yachtsman who founded the company in 1967. Over the course of 50 years, Van der Valk built a global fleet of more than 1,000 motoryachts in both steel and aluminum, its early rise to prominence coming from cabin cruisers in the 7- to 10-meter (23- to 32-foot) range. By the mid-1980s, the builder’s Vitesse series of semidisplacement steel and aluminum motoryachts set a benchmark for its strong resale value, which continued with the Continental I, a signature line that dominated the 1990s and early 2000s. In the 2010s, the firm broke into the superyacht sector thanks to collaborative projects with designer Guido de Groot, a partnership that set the tone for the future. Today, Wim van der Valk serves as President Emeritus of the board, advising the management team of Enrico Theuns, Bram Kooltjes and Yoeri Bijker, who leverage decades of combined experience in the high-end yachting industry.
Design and Innovation
Over the past two decades, Van der Valk’s design partnerships have included renowned firms such as Guido de Groot, Ginton Naval Architects, Diana Yacht Design, Carla Guilhem Design, Cor D. Rover and Van Oossanen, to name a few.
While a potential client is welcome to bring a complete vision or drawings to the table that might require a new hull design, most of Van der Valk’s all-aluminum builds are married to previously proven hulls from the builder’s diverse fleet, allowing the client and the preferred designer to focus on customization from the waterline up without reinventing the wheel.
With customization comes forward-thinking clients and pioneering innovations, and Van der Valk has embraced innovative concepts, which have led to award-winning, head-turning builds that have propelled the yachtbuilding industry forward.
In 2013, Van der Valk’s 37-meter (121-foot) Santa Maria T was the world’s first motoryacht to feature a two-axis fin antiroll damping system. The yard also developed hulls and models to specifically integrate the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system when it was first introduced.
More recently, the 34-meter (111-foot) tri-deck explorer yacht Lady Lene was designed and built to be completely ADA-compliant and wheelchair accessible. Its overall design garnered a World Yacht Trophy, a Boat International Design and Innovations Award for Best Interior Design, and a World Superyacht Award Judges’ Commendation for “styling and performance quite unlike its rivals in this class.”
Delivered in October 2023, the 34-meter (111-foot) Blue Jeans was one of the most complex yachts the yard has engineered and built to date. This bespoke raised pilothouse features high ceilings throughout its interior (soaring to nearly 8 feet in the salon), a pioneering use of exterior glass for the windows and bulwarks, and a flush bow area with hidden windlasses opening up the space for guest use. Interior features such as liquid metal walls, exclusive use of reconstituted teak, copper accents, rare marbles, and remarkable lighting displays were the finishing touches that led to this marvel receiving its own World Superyacht Award.
Launched in 2023 and delivered this year, the 34-meter (111-foot) Pilot was the first Van der Valk built to American Bureau Shipping standards. Designer Cor D. Rover was brought in for his pioneering vision for high-volume designs by an experienced client who requested a length extension to the maximum-interior-space principle, coupled with a modern, contemporary aesthetic. The result is a three-deck yacht with a self-contained pilothouse, a main-deck master suite with a balcony (echoed for the VIP on the lower deck), a full lazarette for tender storage, and foldout transom wings that extend the swim platform. Van der Valk’s expertise punctuates multiple areas of this eye-catching build, from the automotive-inspired aluminum grills to the large windows, curved shapes, and masculine angles. It too has been nominated for a World Superyacht Award.
From Semicustom to Custom Series
Balking the trend followed by so many custom-turned-semicustom builders, Van der Valk has evolved over the years to focus exclusively on custom aluminum motoryachts fully finished and outfitted in-house in the niche 25-to-45-meter (82-to-147-foot) size range.
The high number of one-off builds over the years has enabled this niche offering and flexibility. Supported by the technical and engineering expertise of a 100-strong team of builders, craftsmen, specialists, painters, and joiners—a rare in-house array of services for a boutique shipyard—Van der Valk’s facilities have evolved to comprise seven state-of-the-art sheds spanning nearly 10,000 square feet and affording a build capacity of four up-to-45-meter (147-foot) yachts at any one time.
A recent yard expansion has been timely. With bays full and build slots booked into 2026, Van der Valk’s specialized focus is clearly being met with global demand. Custom builds currently underway include the 34-meter (111-foot) Project 111.11 , a RINA-class four-deck, five-stateroom Guido de Groot design with a contemporary interior by Carla Guilhem that expands upon Lady Lene ’s proven hull form with twin commercial Volvo Penta 750 hp continuous-duty engines. It is slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2024.
Project 111.11 is followed by Project Samba , a 35-meter (114-foot) tri-deck fast-displacement explorer also designed by Guido de Groot as an exceptional family residence on the sea. Inspired by the outdoors, Project Samba maximizes the yacht’s indoor/outdoor space with a large aft deck, a beach club, a transformer swim platform, and an indoor/outdoor bridge deck salon.
Repeat clients have brought another new exciting design concept to the yard, and construction has begun on Project EVO , a 39.9-meter (130-foot) round bilged, fast-displacement hull design with a target 24-knot top speed. Project EVO represents the largest yacht that the yard has built to date. With naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design and Ginton Naval Architects, the all-aluminum yacht will feature exterior styling and a bespoke interior design by renowned Italian firm Cristiano Gatto Design.
While current clients claim many of Van der Valk’s build slots, new clients spanning the Americas to Europe to Asia are discovering the Dutch builder’s niche focus, youthful enthusiasm, and concierge-like global after-sales warranty and service. After all, when the message is “Your World, Your Yacht” and the size is within reach, why not?
