San Diego Essentials: 14 Experiences to Add to Your San Diego Bucket List

Reading Time: 11 minutes

San Diego is a city that has it all: Stunning beaches, fantastic food, and a laid-back vibe that makes each day feel like a mini-vacation. Whether you’re looking to purchase a house in the city , in the market to rent an apartment , or have your eyes on a rental house , crafting the perfect San Diego bucket list is a great way to ensure you experience the best this paradise has to offer. From iconic landmarks and hidden gems to outdoor adventures and culinary delights, there’s something for everyone.

The city of San Diego

1. Surf the day away

Surfing in San Diego is a quintessential Southern California experience. From La Jolla Shores to Mission Beach, you’ll find everything from gentle swells to more challenging breaks. Whether you’re catching your first wave or honing your skills, the coastal views and warm waters make San Diego a surfer’s paradise all year round.

“San Diego county is very big and beautiful. I love living here, and as a 5th generation Californian and San Diego county resident, I can confirm we have fantastic surfing, food, mountains, and desserts. The recreational activities are plentiful and I happen to love surfing the most,” says Doug from surfing school, San Diego Surf . “Surfing is challenging, so be sure to take a beginner’s class, then move to more advanced learning. Coupling this with consistent surfing will increase your success and fitness. It’s a magical feeling.”

If you’re near Ocean Beach check out Ocean Experience , San Diego’s oldest surf school, founded in 1990. Through the years, their camps, lessons, and clinics have maintained the highest standard of quality instruction. This surf school developed a training program that builds confidence, ensures success, and empowers students of all ages and abilities to surf for life. With a step-by-step surf skill progression training method, you’ll be riding waves on your own in no time.

For a different surfing experience that promotes gratitude and mental clarity, try visiting Crispy Surf School . Located at Mission Beach, just north of Belmont Park, Crispy J and her crew focus on more than just surfing—they help you connect with the ocean’s natural rhythm and embrace the blissful flow of life. Whether you’re new to surfing or a seasoned pro, getting “Crispy” is the perfect way to dive into the laid-back, sun-soaked vibe that defines the California coast.

Deciding between renting or buying your next home?

Tucked along San Diego’s coastline, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is an awe-inspiring spot famous for its unique scenery. Covering over 2,000 acres, it’s home to the rare Torrey Pine tree, which thrives in the rugged coastal environment of scrubland and sandstone bluffs. Visitors can wander through scenic trails that offer views of the Pacific Ocean and a variety of plant life. Besides the iconic Torrey Pine, the reserve is also a haven for wildlife, making it a top choice for both nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

“One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the culture of San Diego is to go on a hike at Torrey Pines State Park. While you climb the hill and overlook the ocean and city below, you’re rewarded with some of the prettiest views in the city,” says Courtney Delfino from San Diego-based travel and lifestyle blog, Le Travel Style . “There are tons of trails to choose from, but my personal favorite is hiking the Broken Hill Loop trail to Flat Rock which is 2.7 miles out and back.”

Paul, the founder of Drives and Detours recommends visiting Torrey Pines on a day of adventure. “What I like most about San Diego is how easy it is to access such a wide range of outdoor adventures, even in a single day,” explains Paul. “ Start your morning early with a hike at Iron Mountain or grab your mountain bike and hit some sweet single track at Mt. Laguna. Then, head back to the beaches for cooler temps and a round of golf at the iconic Torrey Pines.”

3. Take a drive to South Cardiff Beach

Cardiff Beach , located in the town of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, is a fantastic spot to enjoy a classic beach day in San Diego. The vibe is super relaxed, with plenty of room to spread out on the sandy shore, play some beach volleyball, or just relax under an umbrella. The gentle waves make it a great place for beginner surfers and children. “Visiting SD’s beaches is a must. I especially love going to South Cardiff Beach at low tide to check out the tide pools,” says San Diego-based wedding and lifestyle photographer, Christel Tran .

Additionally, the nearby Cardiff City Center is perfect for grabbing a coffee or a bite to eat after a day in the sun. Whether you’re here to watch the sunset, take a leisurely walk along the water, or just soak up the sun, Cardiff Beach is a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the coastal charm.

4. Spend the day wandering around Balboa Park

Balboa Park is a sprawling 1,200-acre oasis in the heart of San Diego known for its stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and world-class museums. The park’s highlights include the expansive San Diego Zoo , the historic 1915 Panama-California Exposition , and the San Diego Museum of Art . With so much natural beauty and a wide range of indoor activities, Balboa Park is perfect for a relaxing stroll, a museum visit, or catching one of the many events held throughout the year.

“For something different than the beach and the Zoo, but equally quintessential to San Diego, spend the day in Balboa Park,” says photographer Bernadette from Narrative Images . “Start with a hand-crafted coffee at the Craft CafĂ© inside the Mingei Museum . Then, take a stroll through the park’s gardens and the plazas of the Spanish colonial revival architecture, explore some museums, and enjoy some local buskers and prime people-watching. As the sun sets, unwind with a craft beer and meal at Panama 66 , a beer garden within the SDMA sculpture garden —an ideal way to experience San Diego culture and art in true laid-back San Diego style,” continues Bernadette.

The Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park is another great place to capture the essence of San Diego. While you’re there, check out the Outreach Gallery at Gallery 21 , where San Diego County artists showcase their work. Coming up, you can see “The Friends of Chinese Brush Painting” exhibit from September 24th to October 7th, and “Reigning Cats and Dogs” exhibit from October 8th – October 21st. The gallery features new artists and groups every two weeks, offering a fresh look at local art.

As the name suggests, it’s the perfect spot to catch a sunset with its vibrant colors reflecting off the ocean and cliffs creating a breathtaking scene. While you’re there, don’t miss a walk along the scenic trails which provide access to some of the city’s most picturesque viewpoints.

Tahnie Nollenberger, owner of Ivy Wedding and Events , loves to capture iconic wedding engagement photos at the cliffs. “Sunset Cliffs in San Diego is one of the best natural bluffs and magical spaces for capturing photos,” says Tahnie. “The dramatic coastal views, with rugged cliffs and the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, create a breathtaking setting during the golden hour of sunset. This picturesque location offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and romantic ambiance, perfect for celebrating your love.”

Sip custom cocktails aboard the largest catamaran in San Diego history. They also offer private yacht rentals, perfect for any special occasion.

Many of the local craft breweries like Pure Project, also use these coffee beans to make their stouts.”

Another must-visit coffee shop in San Diego is The Mental Bar , a unique space that combines coffee culture with a focus on wellness. Introduction

San Diego is not just a city; it’s a lifestyle. With its laid-back atmosphere and stunning sunsets, paddle boarding here feels like a natural extension of the local culture. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, paddle boarding is a must-try water sport, especially during the summer months when the weather is perfect for spending time on the water.

Essential Gear for Paddle Boarding

Before you hit the water, it’s crucial to have the right gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable paddle boarding experience. The essentials include a reliable SUP board, a paddle suited to your skill level and water conditions, and a personal flotation device (PFD) for safety.

Whether you’re renting gear or have your own, having the right equipment can make all the difference in your paddle boarding adventure.

Selecting the appropriate SUP board is particularly important for beginners. Wider, thicker, and longer boards provide better stability, making it easier to balance and paddle. Newcomers often find wider boards more stable, making it easier to gain confidence.

The right paddle boards guarantee an excellent paddle experience, whether on calm waters or attempting SUP surfing.

Your choice of paddle greatly influences your performance on the water. Longer paddles offer greater stability and efficiency on calm waters, ideal for leisurely paddling. Shorter paddles enable quicker, more responsive strokes in rougher waters, essential for wave navigation.

Choosing the right paddle length and style enhances your paddle boarding adventure, whether in Mission Bay or the Pacific Ocean.

Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

Safety should always be a priority when paddle boarding. The U.S. Coast Guard mandates the use of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for good reasons. Type 2 and Type 3 PFDs, preferred for paddle boarding, offer a balance of safety and comfort. Inflatable life jackets are another popular option.

Carrying a safety whistle and light is also recommended, especially for evening paddles.

Safety Tips for Paddle Boarding

Prioritizing safety is essential in paddle boarding. Begin by considering your attire. Avoid cotton clothing and opt for water-wicking materials or wetsuits to stay comfortable and dry. Long-sleeved swimwear protects you from sun exposure, crucial during long paddling sessions. Always attach a leash to your paddle board to prevent it from drifting away, a potential lifesaver in rough waters.

Starting in calm waters helps beginners learn balance and get familiar with the board’s movement. Keeping your feet parallel and centered on the board will help maintain balance. Maintain situational awareness to avoid hazards like other boats and changing water conditions.

Using your core strength while paddling reduces fatigue and increases stroke efficiency. Lastly, check the weather and wind conditions before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
