Marlin 33 is the multihull of the year 2022
The foldable sailing trimaran Marlin 33 has won the prestigious ‘Best Multihull of 2022’ award, the world’s highest accolade for multihull sailing and motor boats. Awarded in recent days at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande Motte, France, the prize was consigned into the hands of the Marlin 33’s designer, Dane Jan Andersen , at a special ceremony.
Mr Andersen is the head of Vision Boats , a small Danish team specializing in the design of multihull yachts that has an established working relationship with Marlin Trimarans. Designer, builder and sailor, with the Marlin 33 Mr Andersen has developed a trimaran for both racing and cruising that combines extreme sailing speed, great comfort and attention to aesthetics. It is one of the fastest trimarans in the world, built entirely in carbon with a set of innovations that have distinguished the work of Marlin Trimarans and Vision Boats, in particular its characteristic of being foldable and thus easily trailerable , but also easily assembled by just two people. The Marlin 33 won over the public at La Grande Motte: not only did the boat come top of the “Sailing Multihulls up to 40 feet” classification, it also received the most votes overall (47.36%) to win the first overall prize as the best multihull of the year, beating all the other boats and yachts in the competition .
As well as offering above-average sailing performance in its category, also thanks to its extreme lightness (the boat weighs just 1460 kilograms ), Marlin 33 has ample space on board to comfortably accommodate an entire family even on long distance cruises, with the saloon measuring 1.95 metres in height, cabins to accommodate six people and a table seating eight. The trimaran is also very easy to steer, offering easy handling and excellent visibility, especially in the two-rudder option. It is equipped with a 450W solar panel to power the Torqeedo electric motor, lights and on-board equipment, making it completely energy autonomous.
Perfect in shallow waters as well as when sailing in archipelagos, bays, fjords and rivers, Marlin 33 finally stands out for the high volume of its side hulls, which guarantee maximum safety even in strong winds while sailing.
Series production of the Marlin 33 has already started at the Elica Yard in Bulgaria.

"It’s a RIB with sporty lines, who’s shapes are well connected and consistent to an excellent functionality both during the navigation and at anchor. A very livable model that wisely takes advantage of the architecture of the bow rider, as unusual for a RIB, as functional: a central corridor that join the stern convivial area to the bow one with no obstacles or impediments of any kind. High attention is paid to detail and a high quality construction both in the printing and in the pairings of the various parts."

Manufacturer Description
Built in Miami and sold factory-direct, the semi-custom Marlin 350 was among the biggest center console fishing boats of her era. Construction was state-of-the-art, and the sleek, low-profile lines of the Marlin 350 continue to impress today. She was available in two configurations; the Cuddy version has a V-berth and electric head in the lockable cabin, and the Open Bow layout (starting in 1998) has a standup head/shower in the console. Standard features included an integrated swim platform, 50-gallon livewell, bait prep station, dual leaning post with backrest, insulated in-deck fish boxes (2), tackle drawers, fresh/raw-water washdowns, cockpit bolsters, cockpit rod storage, tubular radar arch, low-profile bow rails, trim tabs, forward console seat, popup cleats, and gunnel rod holders. Note the port/starboard jump seats forward on the console. Fit and finish of the Marlin 350 is second to none. A fuel-efficient boat thanks to her light weight, the Marlin will hit a top speed in excess of 40 knots with twin 250hp Mercury outboards.

Spencer 62 – Boat Review
- By Capt. George Sawley
- Updated: November 12, 2013
During a 1997 tour of various North Carolina Outer Banks boatbuilding shops, my boss and I happened upon a single small shed with a boat’s bow peeking out the large open door. It had the bow flare like the rest, but this one sported a much prettier shear line than the others we’d seen. There was no sign on the shed, but there were a few people around, and since the boat was a work in progress, we decided to ask about her.We were quickly greeted by Paul Spencer and his crew, and just like other Carolina builders, he was proud to give us a tour of what he said was going to be his own new charter boat. After seeing most of the builders in town and many boats, it was clear this boat was something special. It had a great look, with balanced proportions and clean, sleek lines.
From that first boat, Spencer quickly rose to the top of the boatbuilding pack. Now that there are 79 of his boats on the water, it’s almost impossible to go anywhere in the world of sport fishing without seeing one. His boats regularly win tournaments and set records wherever they go. Right now in Cap Cana Marina in the Dominican Republic, there are eight of his builds ranging in size from 57 to 66 feet. One of them is his latest: a 62-footer built for Bobby Jacobsen named Marlin Darlin . Every boat Spencer builds is a one-of-a-kind boat, and this 62 is no different. Jacobsen has owned four other boats that he was very happy with, but he wanted something truly unique this time.
Speed and Efficiency
Jacobsen wanted the fastest, most fuel-efficient 62-footer that Spencer could build. He wanted to cruise at 30 knots while burning 80 gallons or fewer, and at 40 knots, he wanted to burn fewer then 130 gph. To accomplish this, Spencer combined the new MAN 1,800 hp engines and his fairly new cored composite-constructed hull to bring the boat in at 70,000 pounds. That cored construction provides a weight savings of 6,000 pounds over wood. The hull is not only lighter but also stronger because there are extra laminates added to protect the core from point loading or from an impact. Spencer vacuum bags the entire running surface, which increases adhesion properties and strength by consolidating the laminates to the core.
I met up with Spencer and the crew of Marlin Darlin to fish a day out of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Like all Spencers, this 62’s sleek and beautiful lines stood out on the dock. The overall profile of the boat seems a little lower then most of the Spencers I’ve seen, but it’s a nice look, and I’m sure it helps lower the center of gravity. Marlin Darlin also sported a shiny Palm Beach tower, a mezzanine and a gray hull with white topsides. I’d already heard about the faux teak transom and toe rail being painted to look like teak, so I had to take an extra-close look at them. If I hadn’t been told ahead of time, I wouldn’t have picked up on them. I did not ask how much weight was saved by painting over a foam core, but I would have to guess a few hundred pounds — and the maintenance must be nonexistent.
Performance
Although it wasn’t rough enough to really get the full idea of the ride quality Spencer hulls are known for, I could tell the boat rode well as we clipped along at 32 knots in a 3- to 4-foot quartering sea with a 5-foot wave sneaking in at times. We were turning 1,700 rpm and burning 100 gph as Capt. Eddy Wheeler added just enough trim tab to bring down the bow to soften the ride but not throw water on the bridge in these conditions. Occasionally, that bigger wave would come along, and there would be a slight hull slap because the bow was up. All that was needed to prevent the slap was a little extra tab down. I like the range and options you have to control the bow when running a Spencer — you don’t have to add much, if any, tab, and the bow rides high and proud, keeping you dry. If you want to get somewhere in a hurry and use all your speed, start adding tab until the sharp bow entry gives you a comfortable, but sometimes expected, wet ride. With a little fine-tuning, you can find that happy medium with the tabs, and you get all three: dry, fast and comfortable. What I found interesting about the little hull slap we did have on the 28-mile run out was it did not sound any different then the wood Spencer boats I’ve been on. Wheeler has run five other wood Spencers and now has more than 350 hours on this boat. He didn’t notice any difference either and says he is very happy with the boat’s ride, feel and performance.
After the run, we dropped the riggers and put out some teasers and baits hoping to do some marlin catching. It was nice to see a clean and well-organized wash at 7 to 7.5 knots — you won’t have any problem spotting a fish swimming up into your spread. I’ve been told by a few naval architects that a lighter boat tends to be a more active boat in the water, but because of this boat’s wide beam, I couldn’t tell the difference.
The boat was stable and comfortable to get around on. The underwater exhaust was quiet, and the MAN engines, with the common-rail fuel system, ran smooth and quiet and yielded no diesel exhaust smell. No matter where you decided to perch on this boat, you could find a comfortable spot. Whether up on the bridge, down in the cockpit or inside the salon, every part of the boat was laid out nicely for fishing in comfort.
We finally raised our first blue marlin, but as fishing goes, we experienced a tackle failure; a swivel parted on a squid chain, and the marlin went jumping away from us with half a pink squid chain in tow. We soon raised another one that did not want to tease. At the end of the day, I spotted a fish coming under the left squid chain. The crew went to work while Wheeler teased the fish in from the flybridge. As it ate the flat line, a second fish came in on the right squid chain. This time everything went smoothly, and our anglers hooked both fish.
The fish split off in two different directions, forcing Wheeler to execute some fancy maneuvers. Even though this boat is bigger than the one I normally run, with its 1,800 hp motors, it had the power to do whatever was needed. I was very surprised that it spun and got back on the first fish as quickly as it did, even with a full load of fuel. We managed to catch both blues and then a white marlin just before lines out. I really enjoyed fishing on this boat. Spencer Yachts made it easy for me to write a great review on this latest build. If asked, I would not be able to find anything that would make me hesitate to be the captain on this very boat and head out on a world tour the next day.
I enjoyed spending the day with Spencer the most — talking about the new building processes and refinements he has made since I saw his first boat peeking out of that shed. That enthusiasm he had when he gave me that first tour still burns inside him. Although Spencer admits he had some bumps along the way, he and his staff have streamlined the building process without compromising quality. Spencer’s family and crew did a great job working with this boat buyer, and it shows.
This boat was built in 15 months, and Spencer says that although it was not one of his over-the-top yacht boats, every detail — from exterior to interior -— was covered, and everything had a great fit and finish. After seeing the new Marlin Darlin , it’s obvious that Spencer Yachts gives all it can to make sure you are fully satisfied. If you’re in the market for a fast, beautiful Carolina custom-fishing machine, don’t hesitate to go to the Outer Banks and get your own tour of the Spencer yard.
Close call! Check out the video of a 350-pound white marlin jumping into Marlin Darlin ‘s cockpit .

Project Marlin (49m) // Royal Huisman
Royal huisman's project marlin is a classy 49m gentleman cruiser with exterior design by germán frers and interior design by stirling & co ..
This retro yacht project (that is also for sale) welcomes ten guests in five cabins and a crew of ten persons and is under 500 GT. The draft of 1.93m allows sailing in shallow waters like smaller ports or anchor bays.
Tender storage is aft together with a fold-out bathing platform. The crew has an own ladderway on the foredeck to the crew area.
Oliver Stirling of Stirling & Co says:
[…] We feel that an owner of a yacht that embraces the glamorous, romantic personality of the exterior would have classic but modern taste. We feel this owner would want a restrained, sophisticated ‘haute couture’ interior combining contemporary intelligent beauty with the aesthetics of classic proportions to suit the lifestyle of 21st-century cruising, inspired by an earlier glamorous era of yachting.
So, the challenge has been to create an interior that will seamlessly integrate with the calm, timeless elegance of Germán’s graceful sheerline and restrained exterior, pairing future technology with elements of the past. […]
Stirling furthermore:
[…] So, with a portfolio of some of the most famous award-winning yachts ever built, Royal Huisman, with their hallmark of meticulous attention to detail, undoubtedly have precisely the right pedigree to build a yacht of this caliber, to the highest standards of modern comfort, technology and safety.
In MARLIN we have breathed new life into an iconic motor yacht genre. We have re-imagined a classic for a new era in an understated, sophisticated ‘sporty chic’ manner.
Inspired by a forward-thinking and discerning Owner, the design team and build team look forward to collaborating to bring the exceptional vision of Project MARLIN into life.”

'I ended up in a shark den': Deck hand bitten in fall from boat needed 100-plus stitches
Marlin wakeman fell into a shiver of 20 sharks while working on a fishing charter in the bahamas. how he got out of the water stunned his surgeon..
WEST PALM BEACH — On Marlin Wakeman’s many trips to the Bahamas as a deckhand on charter fishing boats, he would notice dozens of sharks gathered by docks, where people throw buckets of fish at them.
He often would wonder: What would happen if anyone fell in?
On Friday, April 26, he found out the most painful way a person could.
Wakeman's foot slipped as he jumped from the dock to a boat at Flying Fish Marina in Clarence Town and he fell into a shiver of 20 hungry sharks. When he hit the water, a 7-foot Caribbean reef shark sunk its teeth into his left leg and pulled Wakeman's head underwater.
“I ended up in a shark den,” Wakeman, 24, of Stuart said Thursday, May 9, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. “I wasn’t really scared at the moment. I just knew I had to get out as quickly as possible. Thankfully, I’m here to tell the story.”
Wakeman had just managed to pull himself onto the boat’s deck, when a second shark grazed his right shoulder with its teeth.
'The luckiest guy': Shark bite victim recounts his 'shredded' arm, stranger who saved him
Path of shark-bite survival went from tourniquet to wheelbarrow to clinic
The boat’s captain heard Wakeman’s cries for help from inside the boat. When he saw him, he tied a tourniquet on his leg, pushed him to a van in a wheelbarrow and sent him to the nearest clinic. There, the medical staff stopped the bleeding and stitched up the wounds.
“Nothing really hurt at first,” said Wakeman, who was working on a charter for Bucket List, a company based in Stuart. “It was a lot of pressure, but I didn't feel any sharpness. You don't really feel the teeth going into you.”
Wakeman said the pain was the worst on the van ride to the clinic, when the adrenaline wore off. He passed out from the pain.
“I wasn’t freaking out, but I told my captain, ‘Hey man, I don’t really want to die right now,’ ” Wakeman said with a chuckle.
The boat’s owner chartered a plane to fly him to West Palm Beach the next day. His dad, Rufus, met him at the airport and took him to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.
When the elder Wakeman saw the text about his son’s shark attack , he said it felt like time stood still. His wife, Melynda, said she went into “shock mode” and “felt like a million little pieces.”
“It’s the worst text you can get,” said Rufus Wakeman, a charter captain himself. “I have several friends who have been bitten, and it’s a shocking revelation when you see some of the wounds these people have had to endure. Now it's our son.”
He is glad that the surgeon who cared for his son, Dr. Robert Borrego, specializes in treating shark attacks. He has treated three so far this year and typically has seven shark bite patients a year, he said.
“Due to a particular chain of events that were set in motion that day, (Marlin) is sitting here right now,” Rufus Wakeman said. “We’re very grateful for all the powers that be that got us to this point.”
'Blessed that it wasn't worse': Florida surfer recounts shark bite that cost him tip of toe
West Palm Beach surgeon 'shocked' that shark attack survivor escaped the water
Borrego said the shark just missed Marlin’s femoral artery, which carries blood from the lower abdomen to the lower limbs. If it had bitten him there, he would have lost more blood and possibly his life.
“It shocks me that he was able to get out of that water,” Borrego said. “The fact that there were 20 sharks in there and he was able to get out and still have a leg is amazing.”
Stopping the bleeding is the first course of action after a shark bite, because bleeding out is the greatest threat to life. After a patient is stabilized, infection becomes the top concern. A lab at St. Mary’s studies the effects that contact with a shark’s mouth can have on the human body. It has found a greater amount of bacteria the closer sharks are to shore.
As soon as Wakeman got to the hospital, Borrego prescribed him a “broad spectrum” of antibiotics. He then performed surgery to clean out the wounds and check for infection.
Borrego expects Wakeman to make a full recovery. He took out his stitches this past week and said the 24-year-old is “healing nicely.” He expects the scars to heal in two weeks, but recommends that Wakeman keep his leg out of the sun for a year.
'Happy to be OK': Shark-bite victim recounts incident near Juno Beach Pier, surgery on arm
Shark bite survivor reminds people not to get 'lazy' near apex predators
Wakeman said he will be more careful working near the water from now on. He said he “got a little lazy” after bringing fishing gear back and forth from the the dock to the boat, which makes regular fishing charter trips from Stuart to the Bahamas.
He jumped 3 feet, rather than cautiously stepping toward the boat. That's when he fell.
Wakeman had narrowly escaped a few close encounters with sharks on other fishing and diving trips. He considers the incident “lucky” because it was him who fell, rather than a child or an elderly person who wouldn't have had the strength to pull themselves onto the boat.
“Keep in mind that (sharks) are apex predators and you don’t want to end up in their mouth,” Wakeman said.
Florida leads the world in shark bites. Awareness is the best way to avoid them.
The best way to stay away from a shark attack in the ocean is to avoid swimming in murky water and being aware of the blacktip shark migration period, which roughly runs from January to April.
Florida leads the world in shark bites, according to a report by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File. The report logged 83 shark attacks in Palm Beach County since 1882 and found that 15% of bites in Florida are from blacktip sharks.
Palm Beach County has the third-most shark attacks since 1882 out of all other Florida counties. The greatest concentrations are in Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach, which some call the “shark bite capital of the world.”

Florida man who survived Bahamas shark attack shares how he kept his cool: 'I'll be alright'
"i was like, hey man, i don't really wanna die right now, this ain't it," marlin wakeman, 24, recalled coolly of the terrifying experience in the bahamas..
A native Florida man bit by multiple sharks after he slipped and fell off a fishing dock while working in the Bahamas kept his cool not only during the terrifying experience but while recalling the attack to members of the media last week.
"I'll be alright," Marlin Wakeman, who lives in the city of Stuart on Florida's Atlantic Coast, said during a news conference at the West Palm Beach hospital where he was recovering after the April 26th attack.
Wakeman, 24, told reporters, including one from the Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, he was working on a marina charter boat when he accidently fell into shark infested waters during low tide at Flying Fish Marina on Long Island and was attacked by two sharks.
At least 20 sharks swam around him when he hit the water and "ended up in a shark den" he recalled of the harrowing scene .
“I was like, hey man, I don't really wanna die right now, this ain't it," he recalled coolly of a terrifying experience, drawing a chuckle from members of the media and others at the press conference.

When the first shark pulled him under
As he hung onto the boat cockpit , Wakeman said, the first shark grabbed his leg and pulled him under water.
"Kinda scrambled for a second, got my surroundings in check," he smoothly recalled.
When the shark let loose its grip, Wakeman resurfaced and, just as he managed to grab onto the boat’s deck, a second shark tried grazed his right shoulder with its teeth. After that, he said, he did a full pullup to get himself into the boat.
While remaining calm with his leg elevated, Wakeman said, a sailboat guide saw his injuries freaked out and yelled, "'He's bleeding out'... and I was like, hey, can we get this guy away from me? This is freaking me out a little bit."
What do sharks eat? Surprising feeding habits of great white sharks, hammerheads and more.
A boat captain, a tourniquet and a black out
The boat’s captain heard Wakeman’s cries for help from inside the boat. When he saw him, he tied a tourniquet on his leg, pushed him to a van in a wheelbarrow and got him into van where the someone shoved gauze into his leg wound and he passed out from pain.
Wakeman was taken to the nearest medical clinic and was later flown to Florida for surgery.

Shark bite narrowly missed an artery in leg
Dr. Robert Borrego, Wakeman' surgeon said, the shark's bit narrowly missed a femoral artery in his leg - which could have caused him to bleed out and die.
After assessing the bite mark, the surgeon said he estimated the shark that bit his leg is about 7 feet long. Wakeman suspects he was attacked by Caribbean reef sharks.
Borrego said he expects Wakeman to make a full recovery. He took out his stitches this past week and said the shark attack victim is “healing nicely.”
Wakeman said he will be more cautious working near the water from now on. He said he “got a little lazy” after bringing fishing gear back and forth from the the dock to the boat, which makes regular fishing charter trips from Stuart to the Bahamas.
Before the fall, he said he jumped 3 feet, rather than cautiously stepping toward the boat.
“I wasn’t really scared at the moment. I just knew I had to get out as quickly as possible," the 24-year-old said. "Thankfully, I’m here to tell the story.”

Man who was mauled by sharks after falling into sea describes what it felt like
Marlin wakeman was attacked by two sharks in a nightmare ordeal.
Britt Jones
A Florida man revealed what it felt like when two sharks mauled him after falling off a boat.
It’s pretty much a standard fear - being eaten by a shark - but a fisherman who was attacked can’t wait to get back out to sea.
Marlin Wakeman, 24, was working on a yacht in the Bahamas when he found himself at the mercy of sharks .
On April 26, Wakeman was aboard the boat at the Flying Fish Marina in Long Island and attempted to jump onto the docked yacht, missed and fell into the sea.
He explained that he knew as soon as he hit the water what was going to happen to him, as he was surrounded by sharks who began biting his leg and shoulder.
He said to the local news at the time: "When I ended up in the water, I pretty much knew what was going to happen.”
This is because the marina was so infested with the beasts that you could almost ‘walk on their heads’.
He continued: "Me and my buddies were talking about like, man, if you fell in here, like, you are done. You're not even going to have a second to really react."
But the previous conversation soon became his reality when the first shark grabbed him.
Wakeman explained how it felt, according to the Mirror : "He grabbed me, pulled my head underwater, and then let go of me.”
It was after it released him that another came up and clamped down on his shoulder, which spurred him on to pulling himself back on to the boat.
He said: "I had so much adrenaline going through my body that it was like a fight or flight kind of thing.
"I got back into the boat and kind of assessed what happened and looked at my leg. It wasn't really bleeding yet. It was kind of, you know, all mangled."
Calling it similar to the feeling of ‘a punch’, Wakeman was soon airlifted to Florida at the St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach for emergency surgery.
According to Dr. Robert Borrego, the shark had bit into his kneecap and had just missed severing an artery.
They estimated the shark was around seven feet long by the size of the bite but believe that he’s going to make a full recovery.
Wakeman admitted that the ordeal could cause him to have nightmares, but he still wants to get back out to the water and continue his fishing career.
Someone who follows the fisherman on Instagram released a little tribute to him two weeks ago, writing: "A little deviation today from my orca and save the planet from plastics obsessions. I follow @marlin_wakeman0011 because his page is awesome and we share a love of adventure and spearfishing. But I stumbled across this a few minutes ago. No bloody fish or stringers of fish were involved. I’m going to make a single point and try to avoid the “Sharks are Friends” social media debate. Sharks are apex predators. We are in their world as guests. Maintaining a healthy respect for all wild creatures is kind of a lifesaving strategy that has kept me enjoying our planet for nearly six decades (but WTF do I know). I don’t personally know Marlin, but I hope to meet him some day. He’s a rockstar imo and the Ocean Gods gave him a get out of jail free card. Being attacked and surviving a malicious shark attack gets my respect. Total bada**ery."
Indeed it is!

Florida man survives being bitten by sharks in 'feeding frenzy' after falling off boat in Bahamas
A Florida man is recovering after being bitten by not one - but two sharks - after falling into the water in the Bahamas. Now, he's sharing his terrifying story of survival.
"Next second, I'm in the water with, you know, a lot of sharks. I knew immediately, I gotta get back in the boat or this is gonna be really bad," said Marlin Wakeman.
The 24-year-old was on a fishing trip in the southern Bahamas late last month when he fell into the water.
"I was still holding on to the boat when I got bit," Wakeman recalled.
Wakeman says the waters in Clarencetown's Flying Fish Marina are infested with dozens of sharks, and is known as a popular spot to clean fish and throw scraps.

"These sharks have learned that there is regular amounts of food being tossed into the ocean here from these fishermen," said Ron Magill, director of communications & wildlife expert at Zoo Miami. "When they get into that feeding frenzy, they're out there to compete against other sharks. They want to get as much food as they can as quickly as they can."
"When I was underwater it was, you know, two seconds. And mainly the worst thing I thought was, you know, I don't want to get eaten by 10 sharks," Wakeman said.
Wakeman was stitched up in the Bahamas and flew back home to Florida the next day. Doctors believe the shark was at least seven feet long and his wound is over a foot long. It just missed his artery.

"The fact that there's 20 sharks in there and you were able to get out of there and still have a leg is amazing," said Dr. Robert Borrego, a trauma surgeon at St. Mary's Medical Center.
"I realized, you know, how lucky I got," Wakeman said. "It was just, you know -- thanking my angels."
Wildlife experts say if you do end up in the water and there are sharks, obviously, try to get out as quickly as possible. But experts also say to fight. Punch the shark in the nose since it is a sensitive area and can often deter an animal.

Trolling in a beam sea shows the Marlin to be relatively stable with a noticeable roll, but with a wide enough beam and fairly wide chines on the aft half of the hull to dampen the rolls pretty well. But the best part of the Marlin 35 has to be its head-sea ability. Take 4- to 6-footers at any speed and the Marlin hardly notices.
