2021; a Record-Breaking Year for Yacht Sales

The last couple of years have seen sales thrown off-course; however, the yacht market has bucked the trend.

The yachting industry has seen unprecedented growth in luxury yachts for sale as the world’s wealthiest sought the safe and exclusive delights that a superyacht offers. As a result, leading yacht brokerages have recorded record sales figures, and 2021 was no exception.

A superyacht provides a self-sufficient sanctuary at sea – one that is exclusive and private, offering owners and their guests the ability to escape the crowds and go anywhere, whenever they please. Boasting all the amenities of a luxury resort coupled with flawless levels of service, a superyacht represents the ultimate lifestyle purchase for discerning individuals seeking to enjoy quality time on the water with friends and family.

Certainly, it’s not just the desire to escape the crowds that helped fuel the superyacht market in 2021. The number of wealthy individuals who can afford the world’s most luxurious vessels soared, with Forbes reporting that there were 400 new billionaires in 2021 with an estimated collective net worth of over US$1 trillion. The business magazine states there are now a record-breaking 2,600 billionaires globally. Finally, historically low interest rates in 2021  provided cheap capital, creating the perfect market for the yacht industry.

Record-breaking yacht sales

According to Ocean Independence, a leading yacht brokerage, due to increased demand and limited listings, yacht purchase was exceptionally buoyant in 2021.

“Sale times decreased with negotiations minimised, as it became apparent that buyers had to make swift and pragmatic decisions to secure their chosen yacht in the face of fierce competition,” Sales Director Toby Maclaurin said.

Global yacht brokerages saw a 72% increase in 2021 for yacht sales over 24-metres in length, while new yacht listings saw an increase of 16% compared to figures from 2020. As demand soared, so did prices. There were 33% fewer price reductions in 2021.

According to VesselsValue, a data firm specialising in commercial shipping, aviation, and superyachts, 887 superyachts were sold in 2021. This is compared to 500 superyacht sales in 2020 and 429 in 2019. VesselsValue notes that the only comparable year to 2021 was 2007, a year before the global financial crisis of 2008.

And it’s not just superyacht sales. The demand for superyacht management services and charter yachts also saw a surge.

Luxury yacht sales

Amongst the most expensive vessels sold in 2021 were the iconic 126.1-metre M/Y OCTOPUS, with an asking price of US$278 million; M/Y MAN OF STEEL (formerly SEVEN SEAS), an 86-metre Oceanco yacht with an asking price of US$150 million and now available for charter with Ocean Independence; and M/Y LADY MOURA, a 104.85-metre luxury Blohm+Voss yacht with an asking price of US$125 million.

New yacht sales also saw a significant uptick in 2021, boasting a 25% rise. The semi-custom market, particularly for yachts in the sub 45-metre range, became highly sought-after. This is likely because a semi-custom yacht has a significantly reduced delivery time compared to a full custom vessel. In 2021, there were 1,024 new yacht projects, either in build or on order. However, yacht brokers predict this trend will likely decline as shipyards are now working at capacity. Limited inventory and extended lead times are also making more owners consider a yacht refit.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Kyiv launches major attack on Crimea naval base using Western weapons

The early-morning attack in Crimea was carried out with weapons from Kyiv's allies - which were "extremely effective", a Ukrainian military source said. Meanwhile, the Russian foreign minister has said he hopes nuclear drills will "knock sense" into the West after jets were pledged.

Foreign ministers from NATO countries are set to meet in Prague later today - as calls to let Ukraine use supplied weapons in Russian territory grow.

Officials will meet for two days ahead of a NATO summit in July, where a new support package for Ukraine is expected to be announced.

Kyiv has been pressing Western supporters, particularly the US, to let it use long-range missiles to hit targets inside of Russia.

France and Germany said yesterday they support Ukraine striking military targets inside Russia, but Italy's foreign minister ruled it out.

In an interview earlier today, Antonio Tajani said "all the weapons leaving from Italy should be used within Ukraine" (see 8.50am post).

Ukraine launched a major attack against a Russian naval base in occupied Crimea early this morning.

At 1am today, the Ukrainian armed forces struck targets near the Kerch Bridge with precision guided missiles.

A Russian Mangust patrol boat was destroyed in the attack, a Ukrainian military source has told Sky News.

The source also confirmed that Western supplied weapons were used, adding they "proved extremely effective against this Russian military target despite high concentrations of Russian Air Defence Systems".

Nikolai Lukashenko, Crimea's Russian-installed transportation chief, claimed on Telegram that Ukraine's overnight attack damaged two transport ferries.

The Kerch Bridge, linking Russia and Crimea over the Kerch Strait, is regularly used by Moscow as a logistics hub to resupply its forces. It was built in 2018 after Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea four years earlier.

Ukraine has launched frequent attacks on the crossing since the war began: in July last year, Kyiv attacked it with two suicide sea drones, damaging a span of the road bridge. 

The explosions  killed two civilians and injured one . Ukraine later formally admitted to launching the attack.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief says that although Russian forces are gathering near Kharkiv Oblast, they are "insufficient" to "break through" Kyiv's defences.

Oleksandr Syrskyi notes on Telegram that Russia is continuing to send additional regiments and brigades to bulk up its forces on two main lines of attack in the north of the Kharkiv region.

However, he says: "These forces are currently insufficient for a large-scale offensive and breakthrough of our defence."

He adds Ukraine is strengthening its defensive lines and has already repelled an attack near Starytsia today.

For context : The northeastern region of Kharkiv became a battlefield focus in the middle of this month when Moscow's forces launched a surprise incursion over the border after weeks of speculation.

It opened a second front, alongside the existing eastern front, and Russia has been building forces around the Kharkiv region throughout May, stretching Ukrainian defences with the aim of capturing the cities of Vovchansk and Lyptsi. 

Russia should consider a "demonstrative" nuclear blast to stop the West allowing Ukraine to use weapons inside its territory, a Putin-backed thinktank has suggested.

The suggestion came from Dmitry Suslov,a senior member of the Moscow-based Council for Foreign and Defence Policy, yesterday.

Writing in business magazine Profil, he said: "To confirm the seriousness of Russia's intentions and to convince our opponents of Moscow's readiness to escalate, it is worth considering a demonstrative nuclear explosion.

"The political and psychological effect of a nuclear mushroom cloud, which will be shown live on all TV channels around the world, will hopefully remind Western politicians of the one thing that has prevented wars between the great powers since 1945 and that they have now largely lost - fear of nuclear war."

Vladimir Putin has previously praised the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy and has taken part in policy discussions run by the thinktank. 

Germany has finished its biggest military drill in eastern Europe since the end of the Cold War.

Exercise Grand Quadriga 2024 - a large-scale joint training event with German, Lithuanian and Dutch armies, as well as the Franco-German Brigade - ended yesterday.

It was held in Lithuania, which shares a border with Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast. 

General Valdemaras Rupsys said: "This is the first time since the end of the Cold War that Germany has run such a large-scale, division-level, deployment into NATO's eastern flank, including Lithuania, operation."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said yesterday Ukraine should be allowed to use Western weapons to strike inside Russian territory.

Italy's foreign minister has said weapons it sends to Ukraine should not be used in Russian territory.

In a break from France and Germany - which said yesterday that Kyiv should be allowed to strike inside Russia with weapons supplied by the West in certain circumstances - Antonio Tajani also said Italy will never send troops to Ukraine.

"All the weapons leaving from Italy should be used within Ukraine," he told the Italian broadcaster RAI today.

For context: Italy supports Ukraine but has so far refused to support Kyiv using Western-supplied weapons to strike into Russia.

On Monday, Italy's deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini fiercely rejected calls from Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary general, to lift restrictions on weapons.

Matteo Salvini said at the time: "NATO cannot force us to kill in Russia, nor can anyone compel us to send Italian soldiers to fight or die in Ukraine.

"If they want to go and fight in Ukraine, let Stoltenberg, Emmanuel Macron and all the bombers who want war go there."

In a dusty clearing in Lithuania, NATO is rolling out the big guns.

Leopard 2 tanks fire their rounds with a deafening thud, while Puma fighting vehicles add to the eerie chorus, accompanied by the buzz of helicopter blades.

The firepower on display is the crescendo of the alliance's biggest military training exercise since the Cold War, led by the Germans and taking place a few miles from the Lithuanian border with Belarus.

The aim is to show how NATO can defend Europe's eastern flank from invasion, offer reassurance to allies and a warning to President Putin.

"Today's exercise sends a clear message - a message of deterrence to Russia," said General Carsten Breuer, Germany's chief of defence.

Russia says it hopes nuclear deterrence will "knock some sense" into the West over plans to send fighter jets to Ukraine.

Speaking to the RIA state news agency today, foreign minister Sergei Lavrov says Russia regards Belgium's pledge to send US-made F-16 warplanes to Kyiv as a "signal action".

He adds: "They are trying to tell us that the United States and NATO would stop at nothing in Ukraine.

"Nevertheless, we hope that the Russian-Belarusian drills on the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons that are under way now will knock some sense into our opponents by reminding them about the catastrophic consequences of further nuclear escalation."

Russia has been carrying out nuclear exercises throughout May, and are currently conducting joint air force and air defence ministry drills with Belarus.

For context:  Earlier this week, Belgium agreed to send Ukraine 30 F-16 fighter jets by 2028. 

It marked part of a security pact Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Alexander De Croo, the Belgian prime minister, signed in Brussels on Tuesday.

As part of the agreement, Belgium will also provide Ukraine with at least €977m (£832m) in military aid.

After securing more NATO support, Mr Zelenskyy again demanded the West lift restrictions on the use of supplied weaponry to hit targets in Russia, saying it was "unfair" that Ukraine could not strike back.

Ukraine says it shot down seven Russian missiles and 32 drones over Kharkiv overnight.

Kyiv's air force commander said on Telegram that Russian forces attacked "military facilities and critical infrastructure in Ukraine" with 51 missiles and drones - but did not provide additional details.

Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov added in a separate statement that four people were injured in the attack.

It comes four days after a Russian strike on a hardware store in the city killed at least 16 people and injured more than 40.

Russia has been able to keep paying for the war, despite sanctions. How? U.S. officials point to Beijing.

Over the last few weeks, a Russian blitz has claimed more than a dozen villages in northeast Ukraine, near the country’s second-largest city. This summer, Russia will likely continue its offensive push in the country’s east.

Russia’s ability to carry out these attacks is in some ways surprising. War is expensive. And Russia’s economy is limited by steep sanctions from some of the richest countries in the world. Yet Moscow has managed to keep paying for its war machine.

How? U.S. officials point to China.

China has vowed not to send weapons to Russia. But it has supported Russia’s economy by buying oil and expanding other kinds of trade. Russia uses the revenue from that trade to manufacture weapons. It has also bought parts for these weapons from China, according to U.S. officials: Last year, Russia got 90 percent of its microelectronic imports from China, using them for missiles, tanks and planes. Without Beijing’s help, Moscow might still continue its war, but it would do so in a weakened state.

Of course, Washington and its allies have also provided support, including actual weapons, to Ukraine. From that angle, the war looks more like part of the broader contest between the U.S. and China — what some analysts call a new cold war — than a one-off conflict. “We are headed into 30 or 40 years of superpower competition and confrontation,” said my colleague David Sanger, who covers national security and recently published the book “ New Cold Wars .” Ukraine is just the current front.

China’s wager

Support for Russia is risky. The U.S. and Europe have warned that they could place sanctions on China if it supports the war. But to China, the benefits of a Russian victory in Ukraine may outweigh the costs.

Among those benefits: The war has entangled the U.S. and its allies in a faraway conflict, straining the U.S. military’s ammunition stockpiles. It has made Russia, a big military power, more dependent on China. It has also been instructive: China has ambitions to invade Taiwan, and it has watched Russia’s gamble to see the world’s response — one that has exposed the limits of America’s reach. While Washington got its closest allies to punish Russia for the invasion, big democracies such as Brazil and India continue to buy Russian oil.

“Countries around the world won’t follow the U.S. where it wants to go, even with what U.S. officials consider a black-and-white issue like Ukraine,” my colleague Edward Wong, who covers foreign policy, told me. “That is much clearer since the war.”

Still, China’s support for Russia could backfire — and in some ways already has. It angered European leaders, who criticized Beijing’s involvement when China’s president, Xi Jinping, visited France this month. Arguably, China’s interference has made it easier for the U.S. to adopt tougher trade restrictions and other policies designed to hurt Beijing. The war united the U.S. and its allies to an extent not seen in decades. If Russia loses, China could be stuck with a diminished partner and frayed relations with some of the world’s biggest economies.

To balance the risks and benefits, China has tried to walk a fine line. It has boasted about a “no limits” partnership with Russia. But it also claims it’s neutral in the war and has tried to maintain plausible deniability in its support for its partner.

The bottom line

Will China’s bet pay off? It depends on the conflict’s outcome.

If the U.S. and its allies were to stop supporting Ukraine and it lost the war, China’s biggest partner would come out on top. The West would not look as strong or united as it once was. Knowing this, China might become more aggressive in its territorial claims in Taiwan, the South China Sea and elsewhere.

But if the West remained united and Ukraine won, the opposite would be true. Russia would be weakened and embarrassed. The U.S. and its allies would have proved that they remained formidable. And China might reconsider if it could afford to take aggressive action to expand its borders.

The world’s advanced economies are moving toward an agreement that would use profits from Russia’s frozen assets to help Ukraine.
