Ed Dubois, 1952-2016

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: March 25, 2016

Ed Dubois

Ed Dubois, a legendary yacht designer whose career spanned decades and whose creations continue to inspire yachtsmen around the world, died Thursday, March 24, 2016.

A subsequent announcement from his namesake firm, Dubois Naval Architects, read, “Following a period of illness last year, Ed had been in better health and working as normal. Unexpectedly, he was admitted to hospital last week and sadly died on Thursday.”

Dubois was born in 1952 in London, and grew up in a middle-class family in Surrey, England. His childhood home was landlocked, but he loved boats from an early age. He recalled being on a rented boat on a pond in London’s Regent’s Park, and even as a child understood the feeling of what he called “being propelled by the wind across the water.”

In 1971, at Southampton College of Technology (now known as University of Southampton), he entered the boat and yacht design program. During his university years, he worked for a boatyard on the island of Jersey, off England’s southern coast, and he got a chance to serve as crew during the delivery of a 31-foot Sparkman & Stephens-designed sailing yacht.

Upon graduation, Dubois worked as a naval architect for designer/engineer Alan Buchanan. While there he drew everything from production boats to some of the lines for the 80-foot Anaconda , one of the first larger boats he ever worked on.

Next for Dubois was a job writing for Yachts & Yachting , followed by a position at the U.K. branch of Miller and Whitworth. (Miller’s Australia II won the America’s Cup in 1983. Miller ultimately changed his name to Ben Lexcen, which is renowned today in America’s Cup lore.)

By the 1980s, Dubois had decided to follow the likes of Ron Holland and form a design firm of his own. “I wanted to be in that camp,” Dubois told Yachting in 2010 , “and just about managed to do that. I was horribly driven.”

One of Dubois’ earliest designs of renown was Aquel II , a 123-foot cruising sloop launched in 1986. Dubois called her “pretty space-age at the time.” Within a few years, she caught the eye of noted Kiwi yachtsman Neville Crighton who commissioned Dubois to design the 106-foot Alloy Esprit . When asked which of his yacht designs are his favorites, he mentioned the 110-foot Imagine , a 1993 build that was his third project with Alloy. “I did fall in love with Imagine a bit,” he told Yachting in 2010.

More recently, Dubois was working on a yacht sure to become legendary upon her launch in spring 2017: the 190-foot Royal Huisman Ngoni , whose nickname inside the Dutch shipyard is “The Beast” thanks to her 233-foot rig for fast, furious sailing.

And while sailing yachts may have held Dubois’ heart, his firm also became renowned for superyachts. Among the many globally prominent projects that bear the Dubois Yachts stamp are the 152-foot Feadship Kiss , launched in 2015.

Throughout his career, Dubois placed equal emphasis on pleasing the client, being artistic and designing yachts that sailed well.

“My job is not to have some ego fancy of what you should have, Mr. Client,” he told Yachting in 2010. “I try to find out from the owner what really suits his style of living on the boat — how he spends his time, what his priorities are, and his friends and family — and put the right boat around them. The architecture gives you what you want on the water. It’s a lifestyle. It’s not just the look; it’s how it works.

“I have to say that I get as much fun out of designing boats to look good as I do out of getting them to sail well. I’ve always been like that, even in the racing boats. I always got a buzz out of making them look right.”

Dubois is survived by his wife and four children. Funeral arrangements are still pending.

Dubois Naval Architects will continue into the future under the direction of senior designer Peter Bolke, who has been with the firm for 23 years and will now become managing director.

Dubois, a legend in his own time, will be sorely missed.

Iconic Yacht Designer Ed Dubois Passes Away

By Ben Roberts

Ed Dubois, the man behind an incredible portfolio of launches and designs, has sadly passed away. Statements from the Dubois Naval Architects team and industry colleagues alike highlight his remarkable life, passion for sailing and a legacy of unparalleled work.

“Ed’s career spanned decades and his passion, commitment to his work and love of his clients created a unique business, driven by exceptional design and technical talent and a genuine desire to create the most breathtakingly beautiful and technically advanced yachts; now scattered across the globe.”

With one of the industry’s most innovative 58 metre yachts currently in build and a number of similarly ambitious projects in the design stage, Ed left the business at an exciting moment in its development [...] Ed Dubois was a huge talent and his legacy will continue as one of the world’s great yacht designers.”

Ed Dubois was known across the world as one of the world’s foremost sailing yacht designers due to his passion for life under sail; inspiring yachts such as Kokomo, Twizzle, Tiara, Drumbeat, Nirvana, Squall, Mondango and Red Dragon, to name only a few.

“It goes without saying that my friend and contemporary, Ed Dubois, was undoubtedly one of the most talented yacht designers in our industry.” notes Andrew Winch, Founder of Winch Design . “He had the ability to create the most beautiful and elegant sailing yachts, but they also performed exceptionally well. Above all, he was passionate about his craft, a true gentleman, a great raconteur and a pleasure to be around. I will miss his contribution as a fellow designer, but also as a friend."

Ed Dubois was also working on a sailing yacht project dubbed ‘The Beast’ (Nygoni) with the Royal Huisman shipyard in The Netherlands - dubbed for its sheer size at 190 ft with 233 ft rig - scheduled for launch next year.

“In 1979 my father built Winsome Gold as an Admirals Cup contender. She was around 44'. Today we are building Ngoni at 190', ” adds Alice Huisman, Managing Director of Royal Huisman. “At both ends of this spectrum Ed gave his all to these designs, their clients and to our shipyard. He was a tireless gentleman whose  spark filled a room with enthusiasm. Launching Ngoni in his absence will be a bitter sweet day."

“The industry lost a colleague and I lost a good friend,” says Michael Koppstein of Royal Huisman. “ The influence of Ed Dubois is far reaching and will be ever present in the world of yacht design. A very sad day.”

The motor yacht arm of Dubois Naval Architecture added more vessels to the impressive portfolio of launches under the designer's name. Yachts such as Turquoise, Como and Kiss are just some of the projects which have come from the pen of Ed Dubois, and stand as part of his incredible legacy.

“We at Turquoise Yachts are very saddened by the sudden loss of our dear frie nd and business partner, the talented naval architect Ed Dubois.” Adds Mehmet Karabeyoglu, CEO of Turquoise Yachts. “He designed our very first superyacht, the 50m Turquoise, (now called Double Trouble) and with that successful new design, he participated in propelling Turquoise Yachts into a new direction of superyacht design and building. Following our milestone motoryacht Turquoise, Dubois later designed our second 55.4m Turquoise, succeeded by 54.2m Talisman Maiton, 55m Sequel P, 54m Tales and the 50m Mosaique. Ed Dubois was indeed a superb visionary designer, but moreover, he was a thoughtful, kind and compassionate man-a true gentleman. I also knew him to be a loving husband and father with a strong commitment to family.

“In addition to a professional relationship between Dubois Naval Architects and Turquoise Yachts, Ed and I enjoyed a deep personal connection-sharing a passion for the sea and sailing. We never ran out of interesting conversation and sea stories respecting each other’s experiences and enjoying each other’s sense of humor.”

Looking to the business, Dubois Naval Architects also stated that Peter Bolke, Senior Designer and a valued member of the Dubois team for 23 years, is to become Managing Director with immediate effect; supported by the rest of the Dubois team.

Dubois Naval Architects Ltd goes into liquidation

  • Toby Hodges
  • February 23, 2017

The leading design firm set up by Ed Dubois in 1977 has closed and gone into liquidation, with its assets being sold through auction.

Following the death of world-renowned British designer Ed Dubois last year , we are saddened to report that Dubois Naval Architects has closed and gone into liquidation. Its assets including the iconic company name, its drawings and designs are being sold through auctioneers Marriott & Co, with the auction ending as we went to press on the 28 February.

The two largest assets are the goodwill of the company, its name and intellectual property, and its works in progress – which principally involves the 58m sloop dubbed ‘The Beast’, currently in build at Royal Huisman and due to launch later this year.

Dubois in liquidation

Now named Ngoni , her initial nickname was a clever way to bring attention to the 58.15m/190ft project, a slender ocean-going fast cruiser, and one with a contemporary, progressive design. The aluminium hull and deck in build will have a carbon rig, rigging and rudder and a lifting keel. The trunk for the latter is milled from solid aluminium to support close to 100 tonnes of fin and lead bulb weight.

Dubois closes

The purchaser of this particular lot would need to be a proficient naval architect capable of finalising the design, which includes overseeing the launch, seatrials and stability tests – and would therefore receive the final payment due from the owner of the project.

The goodwill assets contained in Lot 1 include the original Dubois designs and drawings, the potential for future royalty payments and the company’s domain name, websites, branding and marketing etc. Further lots for sale include the models of past Dubois designs, the office equipment and a RIB.

Dubois in liquidation

Ed Dubois lost his battle with cancer last March at the age of 63. Senior designer Peter Bolke, a member of the Dubois team for 24 years, became the managing director of the company Dubois founded in 1977.

Dubois in liquidation

Malcolm McKeon, who worked with Ed Dubois since the foundation of the company through to 2012, said: “I was very sorry to hear that Dubois Naval Architects has gone into liquidation.  I have fond memories of my 30 years with the company, designing some of the most impressive superyachts on the water today.  Although the company now ceases to trade the name shall certainly play an important part in our industry’s history.”

Online bidding is available at www.marriottco-auctions.co.uk – the auction closes on Tuesday 28 February 2017.

Dubois Naval Architects was founded in 1977 and has since then, under head architect Ed Dubois, designed many beautiful and functional luxury yachts.  With a focus on modern and technologically advanced sailing yachts, Dubois Yachts have created many of the significant yachts on the water today.  Their yacht designs “marry seaworthiness with grace and this union spawns concepts which perform well at every level.” Their aim “is to produce yachts which perform their function perfectly."

Earlier some of Duboi's yachts were built in Europe, although more recently Alloy Yachts has been the yard of choice as well as Fitzroy Yachts, both in New Zealand.

Here are some of the luxury yachts that may be chartered which have been designed by Dubois Yachts.  Please contact us should you wish to enquire about a Dubois designed yacht.Dubois Naval Architects Ltd: Offering the Best Superyachts from Day One.

More recently, Dubois launched the Como, a 134’ motoryacht with a stylish, contemporary design inside and out using marble to embellish the interior and a sleek silver exterior. The Como launched in November of 2006. The Red Dragon is a 169’ sloop sailing yacht that launched in 2001 and is the half-sister (hull designs are alike) to the 2007 Kokomo. The Kokomo boasts of a master stateroom plus four guest cabins, along with a captain’s suite and four crew cabins. The crew is a happy one with separate quarters including their own laundry, pantry and large galley. Kokomo is a fast cruising sloop style sailing superyacht.

After the winning designs of the Borsalino Trois and later the Police Car, Dubois Naval Architects Ltd. was sought after by shipyards to design a series of production boats. In 1985 a yacht owner came to Dubois with some ideas of his own that he wanted turned into a super performing superyacht. They worked together and came up with one of the most innovative and technologically advanced vessels of the time. The Aquel II was the talk of every port she visited and it wasn’t long before private owners were seeking out Dubois to put their ideas into design.

ed dubois yachts

There are currently 13 yachts in build at Dubois. The smallest of these is the Alcanara, a mere 95.5 foot sloop fast cruising sailing yacht being built for an Australian client. The owner wanted a luxurious and fast sailing superyacht styling that was just under 100 feet long. The largest of the yachts in build is the 191.59 foot Kokomo, due to launch in 2010. This massive sloop sailing yacht is slated to be a significant advancement in the entire yacht design industry because it will not only be one of the largest sailing yachts, but also the best performing of all regardless of their size. Dubois Naval Architects Ltd. has certainly outdone itself, and the others, with this luxury superyacht.

U.S. Eyes $156 Million Yacht in Dubai Linked to a Russian Oligarch

The U.S. Justice Department is taking steps to seize the Madame Gu, a 324-foot luxury yacht, but it will be diplomatically thorny.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — On a clear morning in late October, the jewel-blue hull of the Madame Gu, one of the world’s most luxurious superyachts, gleamed, its aluminum rails shimmering in the sun. Workers on the pier said they had recently seen people painting, cleaning and generally keeping the ship with its helipad and six guest staterooms in pristine condition.

In past years, such a scene would not have been noteworthy. Many superyachts come and go from Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina, best known as the home of the Queen Elizabeth 2, the trans-Atlantic ocean liner-turned-hotel that dominates the waterfront here.

But Russia’s war in Ukraine has turned an otherwise routine tableau into a diplomatic battleground between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, an important American ally that has established itself as a safe haven for Russian money and assets out of the reach of U.S. sanctions.

The $156 million Madame Gu epitomizes the problem. In June, the United States designated the vessel, which is linked to Andrei Skoch, a Russian steel magnate and lawmaker under sanctions, as blocked property. That means the yacht cannot use American companies for its upkeep, employ U.S. citizens or even use the dollar. The Justice Department is now taking steps to seize the Madame Gu, according to people with knowledge of the plan.

But the United States can’t seize property in a sovereign nation without permission from its government. The Emirates, which has taken a friendlier position toward Moscow, is balking at cooperating with the United States to pursue oligarchs, American officials said. The Kremlin is also using oligarch-controlled companies in the Emirates to acquire war supplies that the West is trying to keep out of Russia’s reach, according to a Western official involved in the sanctions effort against Russia.

Emirati officials did not comment specifically on the Madame Gu but said in a statement that they took their role “protecting the integrity of the global financial system extremely seriously.”

A closer examination of Russian assets in the Emirates shows that even before the war in Ukraine, Dubai had become a playground for Russians with links to President Vladimir V. Putin. At least 38 businessmen or officials with ties to the Russian president own homes in Dubai that are collectively valued at more than $314 million, according to the Center for Advanced Defense Studies. Five of those owners are under U.S. sanctions.

Since the Russian invasion, Dubai has established itself as a safe haven for Russian yachts and aircraft unable to sail or fly elsewhere. After Russian jets were barred from the European Union in late February, the Emirates became the destination for 14 percent of all private flights leaving Russia, up from 3 percent before the invasion.

“It’s frustrating when you see huge assets that are sitting out there and it appears that the country is not cooperating,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, referring to the Emirates. “It would be nice if there were more common cause against Putin while he’s busy shelling hospitals and schools.”

Mr. Whitehouse is sponsoring legislation that would use proceeds of the sales of seized Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine. Senior officials at the Treasury and State Departments have also complained publicly about the situation.

U.S. officials view the presence of superyachts in places like Dubai and Bodrum, Turkey , as a symptom of wider Russian circumvention of sanctions and continued access to financial markets. Yachts have also come to symbolize the decadence of Russia’s oligarchs, especially at a time when Russian soldiers are scrounging for body armor and sleeping bags on the front lines.

Pursuing the Madame Gu

Built by the Dutch firm Feadship and put into service in 2013, the Madame Gu has a large helicopter pad on its forecastle with a hangar underneath that can double as a squash court when the chopper isn’t on board. The vessel has berthing for 36 crew members, according to one trade magazine.

Mr. Skoch, a member of Russia’s Parliament who is linked to assets worth billions of dollars, according to U.S. court filings, has had sanctions imposed on him twice by the United States, first in 2018 and then after Russia’s invasion this year. The Treasury Department has cited his “longstanding ties to Russian organized criminal groups.”

Mr. Skoch could not be reached and did not respond to messages left at his office at Parliament.

In an interview in October about the government’s broader efforts to go after the assets of oligarchs, Andrew Adams, a federal prosecutor leading the Department of Justice’s KleptoCapture task force, declined to discuss the Madame Gu. But the United States, he said, is warning companies they must not do business with individuals and assets under sanctions. The government, he said, will pursue oligarch-owned assets whose sale could be used to aid Ukraine.

“Where we know there is an asset that can potentially provide significant remuneration for Ukraine, that obviously is an attractive case to pursue,” he said.

U.S. officials are likely to use the case they made for impounding a $90 million Airbus business jet linked to Mr. Skoch in August as a blueprint for seizing the Madame Gu, said people familiar with the plan.

That means investigators will aim to show that the owner of the vessel, or the companies that have been providing services to it, have intersected with the U.S. financial system.

“If there are U.S. dollars or a U.S. nexus associated with supporting this vessel, massive enforcement actions could take place,” said Adam M. Smith, a former official overseeing sanctions at the Treasury Department. Companies that provide support to entities under sanctions could potentially face their own sanctions, said Mr. Smith, who is now a lawyer at Gibson Dunn in Washington.

This year the United States has carried out two high-profile seizures of yachts tied to Russians under sanctions, working with cooperative governments. The $300 million Amadea was taken in Fiji in May and sailed to San Diego under an American flag. In April, the United States worked with Spanish police to seize the $90 million Tango.

A Problematic Partner

Diplomatically, the Emirates has been reluctant to take a clear anti-Russian position when it comes to the war in Ukraine. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, recently met with Mr. Putin in St. Petersburg, and the Emirati foreign minister recently hosted his Russian counterpart. Yet Sheikh Mohammed has also talked with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, more than once and recently gave the country $100 million in humanitarian aid.

The United States has publicly expressed dismay over the mixed messages.

During a visit to Dubai in June, Wally Adeyemo, the U.S. deputy treasury secretary, warned of the need for vigilance and proactive steps in combating Russian evasion. That same month Barbara Leaf, the State Department’s under secretary for Near East Affairs, said at a congressional hearing that regarding the Emirates, she was “not happy at all with the record at this point” on sanctions enforcement. Mr. Adeyemo reiterated his concerns in a meeting with Emirati officials in October in Washington.

A senior State Department official said in a statement to The New York Times that the agency continues “to reinforce the importance of conducting enhanced due diligence to prevent sanctions evasion and investigating allegations of such activity” to the Emirates.

The Treasury Department declined to comment on the Madame Gu or the relationship with the Emirates.

Last month, the Treasury Department announced it had placed sanctions on an Emirates-based company, Constellation Advisors Ltd., that the American government said was operating on behalf of a nephew of another Russian oligarch, Suleiman Kerimov. Mr. Kerimov, according to American court documents, was the owner of the Amadea superyacht .

American officials are also worried the Russian government is using the Emirates to acquire military supplies for its war in Ukraine. On Nov. 15, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two Emirates-based transportation firms that had worked with another Iranian firm under sanctions, which in turn had helped transport drones and personnel from Iran to Russia.

Moored in Dubai

Based on a recent visit to Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina , where the Madame Gu is moored, it is clear that international companies are playing a critical role in its care.

The Emirates-based company DP World, through its subsidiary P&O Marinas , oversees the pier where the Madame Gu is moored. Employees from another DP World subsidiary , World Security, staff the small guard box at the entrance. That makes DP World, which is owned by Dubai’s royal family, potentially vulnerable to American sanctions.

DP World “fully complies with all applicable local and national laws and intends to continue doing the same regarding the Madame Gu and other vessels utilizing our services,” said Adal Mirza, a spokesman for the company. He added that DP World had not yet heard from the United States or other countries that had placed Mr. Skoch under sanctions, including Britain and the European Union.

A generator set that dock workers said in late October was powering the Madame Gu — two container-like structures near its stern — bore the distinctive orange logo of Aggreko , a British company. The generator set was connected to the superyacht by thick cords; one of the containers was emitting grayish exhaust.

At the Mina Rashid Marina, soon after Aggreko was contacted by The Times, workers removed the generator. “Having identified that the generator was being used to power a vessel that is allegedly connected to a sanctioned person, we immediately terminated this rental and have since recovered the generator,” the company said in a statement.

Mr. Mirza, the DP World spokesman, said the Aggreko generator had been replaced with one from a local supplier.

P&O Marinas arranged for the diesel generator to provide power for the Madame Gu because that part of the pier, a holding area, has no shore-supplied electric power, said a port official in Dubai, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press.

“At the end of the day, if the U.A.E. hasn’t imposed sanctions, it’s not really their job to enforce other countries’ laws within their borders,” said Nabeel Yousef, a Washington-based partner at the law firm Freshfields, where he runs the sanctions practice. Nevertheless, “companies should not take comfort in the fact that their country has not imposed sanctions,” he added, “because even the smallest connection to the U.S. can lead to U.S. penalties.”

There has also been a notable absence onboard the Madame Gu in recent weeks: a flag. Unlike other ships moored nearby, including the Quantum Blue, a superyacht linked to the billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the Madame Gu appears to be stateless, apparently having been deflagged by the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Islands officials didn’t respond to an emailed inquiry about the ship’s status.

If DP World were to face fallout from U.S. sanctions enforcers, it wouldn’t be the first time the company has been the focus of attention in Washington. In 2006, DP World was seeking to manage some terminal operations at six American ports but dropped out of the deal after a bipartisan uproar in Congress.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Russian missiles streaked into Kyiv  in the biggest assault on the Ukrainian capital in weeks, injuring several people and damaging several buildings.

Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s top national security official, made a secret trip to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine.

Under pressure to come up with billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s military, the E.U. said that it had devised a legal way to use frozen Russian assets  to help arm Ukraine.

Symbolism or Strategy?: Ukrainians say that defending places with little strategic value is worth the cost in casualties and weapons , because the attacking Russians pay an even higher price. American officials aren’t so sure.

Elaborate Tales: As the Ukraine war grinds on, the Kremlin has created increasingly complex fabrications online  to discredit Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, and undermine the country’s support in the West.

Targeting Russia’s Oil Industry: With its army short of ammunition and troops to break the deadlock on the battlefield, Kyiv has increasingly taken the fight beyond the Ukrainian border, attacking oil infrastructure deep in Russian territory .

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
