Croatian crowds cheer Papal visit

Croatia: On board the catamaran Judita and to the accompaniment of cheering crowds and a heavy security presence, Pope John Paul sailed yesterday evening into the Croatian port of Rijeka.

The Pope (83) was at the start of a historic 100th overseas pastoral visit which marks yet another important milestone in his 25-year pontificate.

Earlier, he had formally touched down on Croatian soil when flying into the island of Krk, just off the coast. In an opening exchange of greetings with President Stejpan Mesic, the clearly tired and frail Pope thanked God for allowing him return to Croatia, saying in Croat: "I thank Almighty God for having allowed me to come among you on this my 100th pastoral visit."

Recalling Croatia's recent war-torn past as it struggled to emerge from the break-up of communist Yugoslavia, he added: "This country like several neighbouring countries still bears painful signs of a recent past; may those who exercise civil and religious authority never tire of trying to heal the wounds caused by a cruel war and of rectifying the consequences of a totalitarian system that for all too long attempted to impose an ideology opposed to man and his dignity."

Pope John Paul welcomed Croatia's commitment to EU integration. "The rich tradition of Croatia will surely contribute to strengthening the \ Union as an administrative and territorial unit and also as a cultural and spiritual reality"

Over the next four days, the Pope will visit five cities - Rijeka, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Osijek and Djakovo - with the highlight of the trip probably coming today in Dubrovnik when he will beatify Sister Marija Petkovic, founder of the order of the Daughters of Mercy. This is the Pope's third visit to Croatia, following those of 1994 and 1998.

Judging by the warmth of welcome in Rijeka, not to mention the profusion of papal posters and flags throughout the city, it would seem that Croatia will willingly seize the opportunity to once more greet their fellow Slav.

However, the most significant aspect of the trip is the fact that it is happening at all. Notwithstanding his all too obvious frailty, aggravated by Parkinson's disease, the Pope has again emphatically underlined his determination to take his evangelical message to the four corners of the earth.

Even if he is no longer steady enough on his feet to bend down and kiss the ground at his latest arrival point and even if he now has to resort to a variety of lifts, hydraulic chairs and mini-popemobiles to resolve the logistics of papal travel, Pope John Paul continues to hit the road.

Later this month, he travels to Bosnia-Herzegovina for one day, while in late August he will travel to mainly Buddhist Mongolia, a country with a Catholic population of just 170 people. As papal spokesman Dr Joaquin Navarro-Valls put it earlier this week, "to go that far for so few would really symbolise this papacy".

Split to Hvar Ferry and Catamaran 2023 Guide

Split to Hvar Ferry and Catamaran Guide

catamaran judita

Hvar is one of Croatian hot spots, everybody want to go to this beautiful island. Often, visitors that come to Croatia ask me how to take ferry from Split to Hvar ? Many times they place this question on my blog. Sometimes it’s not easy to repeat the same information all the time. Therefore, I am putting this information together to help you dear traveler! I promise that I will try to be as concise as much as I can. I do this in order to give you a right and distilled information that will save your time.

1. Ferries from Split to Hvar

2. split to hvar by catamaran, 3. reaching hvar by private boat.

There is only one company providing ferries that connect Split and Hvar island. Name of this company is Jadrolinija . It is owned by Croatian government. Even though main tourist season in Split lasts just for 6 months, Jadrolinija ferries run all year round. Moreover, Split to Hvar ferry runs 3 times a day in the winter time. Of course, ferries are more frequent in spring, summer and autumn.

catamaran judita

Ferries take passengers and cars likewise. During the summer months (June, July and August) it is recommended to be in port at least 1 1/2 hours before the ferry departure. It’s important to realize that this applies only for the passengers that go to Hvar by car and want to board their vehicles on the ferry. Summer is the busiest time of year in the port of Split, and therefore you need to line up early to board the ferry on time. If you are traveling without the car, just as passenger, be there half hour early. That would do.

Here is the exact location of the ferries that go to Hvar from Split . These ferries meet on the Pier of St. Peter (Gar sv. Petra in Croatian) in Split.

My recommendation to you is to buy ferry tickets online. That is easier than do it over the Jadrolinija counter. Therefore, here is a link to Jadrolinija ferry ticket online purchase site.

Also, on this site you will find updated prices for cars and passengers in 2020.

Arrival to Hvar island

Ferries land in Stari Grad town which is on the north side of Hvar island. From there it is easy to go to other towns (by car) on the island ( Hvar town , Vrboska, Jelsa, Sućuraj etc).

Many passengers that land in Stari Grad want to go to Hvar town (main tourist attraction on the island). You can do it by a taxi or private transfer from the port of Stari Grad. Cost for transfer is approximately 40 Euro per transfer .

Ferry port in Stari Grad is the main port on Hvar island

Also, you can save some money and take the public bus from Stari Grad ferry port to Hvar town. That is way cheaper than a private transfer. You will see the buses once you leave the ferry (on the right hand side in port). You can buy a ticket on the bus. Ticket price is 5 Euro/person. This bus will take you straight to Hvar town. Buses stop behind St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Hvar town. With this in mind – here is the link to bus timetable.

Catamaran is also a great option when we speak about transfers to Hvar. It departs from the port of Split and it takes passengers straight to Hvar town. Many visitors that go to Hvar island go straight to Hvar town and spend their vacation there. Catamarans are air conditioned and the ride to Hvar town lasts just for 1 hour. Hence, catamaran is very popular among the travelers and island visitors. However, I have to mention that catamarans take only passengers, cars can’t be boarded on them.

As for the luggage is being concerned, you can leave it on the racks that are available once you board the catamaran. So, luggage is not a concern at all. There are two companies providing this catamaran service, and those companies are: Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka. Catamaran quality and size is about the same. Price is the same too: 20 Euro per person each way (approximately). Each catamaran holds a maximum of 400 passengers.

Krilo catamaran is connecting Split to Hvar town

Jadrolinija – is the national ferry and catamaran provider. Here is Jadrolinija official web site where you can see the catamaran schedules and prices. Use the same page for booking.

Kapetan Luka – is privately own provider of catamaran services in Croatia. Their services are not available all year round. They operate from 01.04 until 31.10. Therefore you can book them for those dates only. Finally, here is Kapetan luka offical website where you can see catamaran schedules and prices. Use the same page for booking.

Also, these companies meet their passengers on different places in the port of Split:

Jadrolinija – their catamaran passengers meet on the Pier of St. Nicholas (Gat sv. Nikole in Croatian). Here is the exact Google location of the Pier of St. Nicholas.

Kapetan Luka – their catamaran passengers meet on the Pier of St. Peter (Gat sv. Petra in Croatian). Here is the exact Google location of the Pier of St. Peter.

Hvar town is the main tourist attraction on the island of Hvar

Finally, we got to this part. Private boat transfer to Hvar is by all means the most convenient way of traveling to the island . There is also a huge demand for this service. Therefore, there are many companies offering this type of service. I have used the services of Atlantis Marine Company many times and I was always happy with them.

However, as I said, there are many companies on the market, supplying these services. Hence, I would recommend you to do your own research on this subject.

Definitely, this is the most expensive way of traveling and you really have to look into it deeply (we all have our budgets, ways of traveling and idea of a great holiday). Of course, take your time when doing this.

How to Get to Brac Island

Lozisca village on Brac island

Getting to Brac island has never been complicated. Thanks to island’s proximity to the mainland and to the Split’s harbor there are several ways to travel to Brac.

If you don’t know how far is Brac from Split, on Brac island travel guide you can see how close is this island to the mainland, separated by Brac Channel.

Because of its closeness to Split town, Brac is the most appealing among Central Dalmatian Island for a day tours.

This also the only island with a fully operating airport just few km from Bol town. On direct flights to Split you can find detailed and current schedules.

Getting to Brac From Split

Car and passengers ferry by jadrolinija.

Brac island is without any doubt one of the most accessible islands when traveling from Split harbor.

Traveling to Brac island by ferry is the cheapest and the fastest way. This island is only 7 nautical miles from Split. Jadrolinija runs the ferry service between Split and Brac.

The closest ferry port is at Supetar , on the island’s north coast, almost directly opposite Split. It takes just over an hour to make the crossing.

It costs €5 in high season from May 30 to September 28 while in lower season you’ll pay €4. For a car the price goes from €18 to €22 depending of the season. All prices are one-way.

Ferry to Supetar

The number of ferry crossings vary from a minimum of 7 to more than 15 in high season. The first crossing starts already at 06 am and the last one leaves even at 1 am. As this ferry route is one of the most crowded in July an August, it happens sometimes to have same additional extraordinary crossings.

It is not possible to book a place on the Jadrolinija ferry so good practice is to come at least an hour before the ferry’s departure, park your car in the queue, go buy your ticket and then wait for the ferry to begin loading.

Passenger ferries by Krilo

Krilo (Kapetan Luka) runs passenger ferries from Split to Bol and Milna on Brac island. These catamaran connections run only in high season.

  • Split to Bol on Brac island
  • Split to Milna on Brac island

For more information on these catamaran schedules click the links above.

Getting To Brac From Makarska

Car and passengers ferry.

In case the ferries from Split to Brac are too crowded, a good alternative is to drive to Makarska , a 65 km south of Split, the capital of Makarska Riviera . From there there is a car ferry from Makarska to Sumartin .

This ferry connects Makarska with Sumartin village on the eastern side of Brac island. Click here to find where’s Sumartin.

The ferry-port in Sumartin , a small fishermen village connects a part of the island with the mainland. The length of crossing is 60 minutes and this ferry takes cars and passengers.

In lower season runs 3 times a day while in season departures 4 – 5 times a day. The prices are almost identical with Split to Supetar.

Getting to Brac By Fast Catamaran Boats

If you aren’t traveling by car, you have more possibilities to travel to Brac. You can always opt for car and passengers ferries or much faster but more expensive, fast catamaran boats.

Catamaran

On catamaran from Split connection, you’ll find more detailed information to reach Brac island. It’s important to know how to move around Split ferry terminals port and how to find more accurately where catamarans depart from.

Split catamaran fast boat connect Split and Brac by two, only seasonal lines.

  • Split to Brac (Bol) and Jelsa (Hvar) 2015 line N° 9603 – Check the schedule !
  • Split to Milna (Brac island to Hvar town) 2015 line N° 9603 A  – Check the schedule !
  • Both connections are operated by Jadrolinija , Croatian state maritime company.

Krilo is an excellent alternative for getting from Split to Brac island via catamarans as well:

In addition to Split – Brac and Makarska – Brac as detailed above, Krilo also runs connections with Brac island from and to:

  • Korcula island
  • Sobra (Mljet island)
  • Pomena (Mljet island)

Links above will give you pricing and schedules.

Getting to Brac By Plane

Flight from Zagreb to Bol, Brac

Besides Split airport, the main hub for all flights to Central Dalmatian destinations, there is also a small airport on Brac island.

Bol Airport or Brac Airport with IATA code BWK is an airport on the Croatian island of Brac, close to the town of Bol.

It is one of three island airports (two other are on  Krk island  – Rijeka Airport and Losinj island – Losinj Airport). Brac airport is used for commercial passenger flights, mainly charter traffic from Europe during the summer season.

New flights from Germany to Brac

The flights will be from Dusseldorf and Leipzig to Brac Airport, the only island airport in Dalmatia. It is unnecessary to point out the importance of these flights to this small airport (BWK). Read more about direct flights to Split !

Airport is situated in Vesko field, 541 m above the sea level. It is only 14 km far from the most beautiful and most famous Adriatic beach, Zlatni rat (Golden horn) and 30 km far from Supetar. All info you can find on Wikipedia page about this airport.

During the high season Croatia Airlines runs direct flights to Brac (Bol) airport only once a week (on Saturday).

If you decide to get to Brac by plane, there are also some others smaller companies that operate charter flights. Schedules and operators change too frequently, but you can do a live search for flights through the form below.

Getting Around Brac Island

If you are getting to Brac island by a car, it will be useful to know the distance in kilometers  between the most popular destinations. By car you can arrive on the island only from Split to  Supetar and from Makarska to Sumartin :

You can check yourself these distances visiting this link .

Getting around by bus

Getting to Brac as a foot passenger you shouldn’t worry to much how to get from one place to anther. There are regular bus services to all parts of the island but keep in mind that all services begin or end in Supetar.

What does it mean for you? It means that if you get off from catamaran to Milna and your destination is Bol , than the bus will take you to Supetar first and than to Bol. It will seem a little inconvenient but that’s the way it works.

The bus company that manages island’s internal routes is Autotrans . Check the schedule on their website. You must purchase tickets at the bus station.

On Autotrans website you can find outlets of different destinations like Supetar and outlet Bol Brac .

Car rentals on Brac island

Rent a car or scooter in Supetar

-Thanks so much.

You are over-thinking this! The port is by the rail station and bus station. The catamarans go from the nearest area to the land which is closer to the Riva and the green market. You can't miss seeing them.

catamaran judita

Catamarans moors at the pier Obala Lazareta in front of Kapetania. At 17:00 look for the catamaran Judita which runs this line this year (although the ship could be changed but not likely).

Thanks again!!!!I will start there... the northernmost pier with the name Judita, I will be at the pier about 30 minutes prior to departure(I cannot get there any early because of earlier travel) so I don't really have that much time to walk up and down that area ,with luggage etc., i don't want to miss the boat!!!

Thanks again

Voyage 500 (Florida)

Presented by john @ yachts unlimited.

Voyage 500

God’s Grace is one of those highly sought-after catamarans that has been immaculately taken care of in all aspects with great detail.  Her present owner has spared no expense in renewing this yacht to a level that would equal brand new—in fact far exceeding a brand new factory Voyage 500 in its vast array of safety, electronics, navigation, and comfort as listed in her equipment narrative.  Often yachts are said to be ready for someone to move on and sail wherever they want to go.  Blue Water ready.  God’s Grace is one of those yachts and “the best of the best”.  New bottom paint February 2023. All new Hatch Covers.

VOYAGE YACHTS, manufacturers of multiple award winning sailing catamarans, boasts its product range as luxurious, stylish, elegant and as performance cruising vessels. Known in the sailing world as quality cruising catamarans. Voyage Yachts are CE certified and are acknowledged for their quality, performance, ease of handling and low maintenance.

VOYAGE yachts discontinued production of the VOYAGE 500 in 2010, after masterfully crafting 40 of these beautiful, pure bred, blue water cruising catamarans. Since then, as more and more new designs come to market, the timelessness of the VOYAGE 500 seems to ring louder and louder…
