Wood, carbon fiber, foam and epoxy: her name is Toroa

Launched the 22-meter yacht designed by botin partners.

torna sailboat

Toroa is 22-meter yacht designed by Spanish firm  Botin Partners.  The modern sloop was launched by Brooklyn Boat Yard in summer 2017. She is built of wood, carbon fiber, foam and epoxy composites.

In hull shape and sail plan Toroa ia very similar to many of today’s modern racing boats with extended bow sprit, plumb bow, wide beam running well aft, T-bulb (lifting) keel and twin rudders.  Unlike today’s stripped-out racing yachts, Toroa has interior accommodations and cruising amenities to allow her owner, family and guests to cruise the world’s oceans in comfort, style and speed.

Toroa is as innovative below the waterline as she is above. The helm controls linked twin rudders set well aft. Most impressive, perhaps is the hydraulically controlled lifting keel that increases the boat’s draught from about 8 feet to just under 15 feet when lowered.

The hollow, stainless steel keel fin is fitted into a carbon box that extends from the boat’s bottom to the underside of the deck. At the top of the fin is a milled stainless steel plate that fits against the deck when the keel is raised and the bottom when it is lowered. The box contains several Teflon “cutouts” shaped to fit the fin and guide it on its journeys up and down.

What a beautiful yacht. I love the classic lines blended with lightweight construction and modern rig and foils. She looks fast enough to sail around most weather systems. Congratulations to all involved in creating Toroa. An excellent choice of name also Toroa/Albatross. Graceful in flight, spending most of the time at sea, gliding over the oceans.

Designed for Fast Cruising

toroa sailing yacht

One of the more intriguing sailing yachts built this year in Maine is the newly launched 72-footer Toroa . As interesting as any other fact about her is that she was built in Maine, mostly out of carbon fiber, epoxy, and rigid foam, by Brooklin Boat Yard, a company that built its reputation on classic wooden boats.

Designed by Spain’s Botin Partners and launched last summer, Toroa will be based in Europe, but her owners plan to cruise in New England, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The extremely high-tech vessel is designed to go fast, but also features comfortable accommodations and cruising amenities.

Just three boatbuilding companies in the world were selected to bid on construction, according to Brooklin Boat Yard owner Steve White; one in Europe, one in New Zealand, and his yard in Brooklin, Maine. The choice to build in Maine made perfect sense early in the process, when the yacht was scheduled to be built out of wood veneers inside and out, over a foam core. BBY had just completed Frank Gehry’s varnished architectural tour-de-force Foggy , using identical methodology. When Toroa ’s designers arrived to evaluate the yard, they took Foggy as evidence that here in Maine was a company that could accomplish the near impossible. But after a contract was signed, the decision was made to switch from using mostly wood in the hull construction, in favor of more carbon and the strongest kind of epoxy resin, which has to be “post-cured” by heat in order to reach full strength.

toroa sailing yacht

I used the word intriguing for this project because the expanded capabilities of this once-humble boatshop are mind-bending. This was the first complete hull that Brooklin Boat Yard built using above-room-temperature, thermo-setting resin. A few other yards in Maine have built small boats in tight buildings that can be overheated; two have specially constructed oven rooms specifically for post-curing.

BBY had neither, but... no problem. White and his talented chums invented a large insulated blanket heated with hot water running through a matrix of tubes. The blanket could be draped over the hull, and concentrated heat exactly where it was needed, while the work crew monitored the process with—pardon the pun—no sweat. White admitted his gizmo might be patentable, but evidently he prefers to earn his daily bread by building boats.

toroa sailing yacht

The boat, designed by Botin Partners for open-ocean cruising at the highest possible speed, is an engineering marvel. In addition to America’s Cup challengers, the Spanish company has designed many of the fantastic ocean racers that we sailing anarchists delight in watching on YouTube—boats with canting keels and huge asymmetrical reaching sails and, in the very latest incarnation, hull-flying hydrofoils.

There was a time, not so long ago, when yacht designers could configure a new boat using previous experience, mechanical instinct, scantlings rules of their own invention, rules from insurance companies and classification societies, and confidence in boatyards that guaranteed their product would be well built. Those protocols worked fine when ocean yachts only smashed across the bounding main at speeds long believed incapable of exceeding 1.34 times the square root of their waterline length.

But “box-rule” racers designed by the likes of Botin Partners have overwhelmed that old wave-making barrier, to the point where they commonly go faster than the speed of the wind driving them, with the boats sometimes reaching 20 to 30 miles an hour. At sea, this means that they repeatedly fly through a drenching cloud of their own spray and, more to the point, they crunch down on waves with shock loads that scream for accurate and difficult computation.

toroa sailing yacht

The goal of all this engineering for speed is light weight, great stability, and extreme strength. This hull doesn’t use a canting keel, which moves a ballast bulb up to windward. It gets extra stability by virtue of a 15-foot 15,000 pound lifting T-bulb keel and twin rudders. (When the boat comes back on-soundings, the keel can be raised using hydraulics to a mere nine feet.) There is also water ballast. A total of 1,100 liters of water, most of it scooped up out of the ocean, some of it in the fresh water tanks, can be pumped sideways to tanks in the windward bilges. In the world of fast sailing, providing that nothing structural fails, stability equals speed.

There is so much physical loading of the many parts and pieces in Toroa that nothing is left to chance. When workmen drilled a hole for a wire or a hose, they often found that the engineers had specified extra reinforcement to account for that. The carbon-fiber bowsprit, which is expected to account for the strain of multiple thousands of square feet of sail, weighed in at only 45 pounds. Granted, a Nitronic steel bobstay will take the major vertical load.

While the systems are complex, the owners wanted a boat that did not require a huge crew. The vast spread of sail with tons of pulling force will be tended by a small complement of humans. This is accomplished by hydraulics. Hydraulic winches control the sail trim, while hydraulic rams provide the power to raise and lower the keel, move the traveler, and adjust the backstays and boom vang. Toroa ’s hydraulics, custom-built by the Italian firm Cariboni, feature an unusual configuration. A relatively small diesel donkey engine, rather than the ship’s batteries, drives the hydraulic pump. This engine will need to be running whenever sails need to be trimmed or the mast tune adjusted.

Building Toroa involved many subcontractors. The carbon rudder was built by  North Shore Composites of Bristol, Rhode Island; the deck, from Teakdecking Systems in Sarasota, Florida, was installed by Larry Murray of Teakdecking Services in Union, Maine. Addaero Aerospace Manufacturing in New Britain, Connecticut, fabricated the titanium deck fittings, and the carbon bowsprit and anchor arm were built by Steve Hassett at Bath, Maine-based Custom Composite Technologies. The spars were imported from Southern Spars of New Zealand. The boat’s luxurious interior was by Wallace Interiors of Trenton, Maine. La Bastille of Savanna, Georgia, cast the custom pewter countertops in the galley.

All the parts came together in a vessel that reveals a remarkable amount of owner-defined customization. For example, extremely commodious cockpit storage lockers were designed to accommodate surfers’ longboards, plus Scuba equipment and much more.

toroa sailing yacht

Beyond just performance, any yacht must meet the highest aesthetic standard, which Toroa surely does. While featuring the vertical stem and stern of a speed racer, the boat has a distinctive look overall. The cabin, coamings, and cap rails are fashioned from Sipo, one of the many African mahoganies, and feature top-of-the-line workmanship. Spacious accommodations below feature white-painted bulkheads and mahogany trim. In an unusual touch, the galley countertops are pewter. The navigation station is at deck level, but is open to the galley below, allowing both good views of the surrounding seas as well as the action inside.

If you ignore the carbon fiber boom and space-age attributes like black carbon standing rigging on the 92-foot tall mast, the boat reads as somewhat classical. I loved the extra bow sheer and round portholes in the topsides. To my eye at least, it evokes a Cornwall pilot sloop and I don’t doubt for a minute that this was intentional. Maybe someday the owners will elect to earmark a couple of weeks to blast across to that region’s Falmouth Classics Regatta and reign in majesty over the fleet. Toroa would not be in the slightest out of place.

Swiftsure Yachts

Toroa  is a rare find, a well-found compact classic cruiser with a complete and current equipment inventory. This is a boat with the equipment and condition for immediate shorthanded cruising.

Chuck Paine’s design gives the Able 34 a graceful yet stout look. The sweeping sheer and short overhangs blend into a distinctive look with modest freeboard and a relatively long waterline. Form and function work together. The masthead rig spreads more than 500 square feet of canvas and the displacement/length is under 300, so she’ll sail well even in lighter wind conditions.

As a centerboarder with on 3’5” draft with the board up, Taroa will be able to sneak into anchorages where few others dare and find a spot close to shore or amongst a crowd.

Toroa  is already a proven voyager, having sailed from Maine to the West Coast. After a major refit including a 2004 Yanmar, standing rigging, refrigeration, and sails, she was trucked to the Pacific Northwest. The current owner’s move overseas is the reason for selling.

Toroa  has been maintained and upgraded by knowledgeable sailors for their own use. Equipment includes bow thruster, windvane, watermaker, and solar panels. Toroa is not only ready to, she is ready to go with the right equipment.

  • 2006 Yanmar
  • New standing rigging (2021)

Interior Accommodations

Toroa ’s cozy interior features a straightforward layout configured for serious offshore passagemaking and singlehanded or one-couple cruising. Classic joinery is used throughout the boat, conveying a warm and comfortable ambiance.

Headroom is 6 feet in the main cabin and 5’10 in the forward cabin.

Lighting is from 19 Frigast LED lights, with a mixture of domes and ones mounted on flexible, directable arms. Light and ventilation come from a mid-hatch and forward hatch. Further ventilation is provided by two large Dorade vents.

A special battery box has been built in the port side, keeping that weight low and in the middle of the boat and making the house batteries immediately accessible. The Dickinsen diesel heater sits forward next to the bulkhead, providing ample heat for the entire boat. To starboard is a sea berth complete with a leeboard that is stored for easy and immediate access below.

To starboard is a standup chart table, with storage in the locker below. The water heater is also in that locker.  The electrical panels are located at the aft end of the chart table behind closing louvered locker doors.

To port is the galley with a solid surface countertop and large sink with both pressure and non-pressure faucets. There is a four burner Force 10 gimballed stove and a Vitrofrigo refrigerator. The aft counter opens up to access the main battery switch and battery isolator.

Deck and Hull

Toroa ’s purposeful decks are set up for comfortable and safe offshore sailing. The solid stern pulpit extends forward of the cockpit to the boarding gate. Side decks are comfortable to walk on and the handrails provide extra security. The liferaft is stored on the cabin top.

Forward, there are two anchor rollers set into the bowsprit and a Muir windlass. The caprails glisten with varnish. The recently painted topsides are a beautiful deep navy blue.

The secure cockpit is big enough for comfort in port and small enough for security at sea. The collapsible wheel opens up the aft end of the cockpit. The arch for the radar, wind generator and antennae puts that equipment well above the crew’s head where they do the most effective yet are out of the way.

The full keel and attached rudder enhance directional stability and the centerboard allows good windward performance. The hull is a-hand laid E-Glass laminate and the deck is foam cored.

Toroa ’s high quality teak decks are in good condition and have been well maintained.

‘Everyday people’ set sail from Seattle for around-the-world race

Winds died to 2 to 3 mph from the south-southwest and Elliott Bay was glass calm. Not ideal for sailing, but not a storm either.

Those were the conditions at Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina as 11 sailing teams from around the world set off Friday in 70-foot ocean racing yachts for the seventh leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The teams, each with 20 to 24 people, will traverse 7,200 miles, from Seattle to Panama and on to Washington, D.C.

Organizers say the event trains “everyday people to become ocean racers.”

Each participant must complete four weeks of intense training before taking part in one or all eight stages of the circumnavigation. As for the crew, 30% of them, who hail from 55 nations, have never been on a sailboat before readying for this race.

So far, the teams have raced over 20,000 nautical miles. The event started in Portsmouth, England, on Sept 3. After the race reaches D.C., it’s on to Scotland then back to Portsmouth on July 27, some 11 months after they departed. The full around-the-world challenge is 40,000 nautical miles.

Della Parsons, crew recruitment director for Clipper Ventures, did a presentation Wednesday in Seattle meant to inspire people to give the adventure a try. As she showed video from a previous race that included huge waves and difficult conditions, she said “You could see people’s eyes widening and thinking, ‘This is ridiculous. I could never do that.’ And then I said to them at the end of the video, ‘I know you’re thinking that but you have to remember all of the people that you’ve just seen on this video are just like you. Two years before that they were also sitting in a presentation thinking ‘this is ridiculous.’ And now look at them. They’ve just really achieved something remarkable.”

Screen Rant

Below deck sailing yacht season 5: trailer, cast, latest news, & everything we know.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5's filming wrapped up and there is some controversy regarding the cast, editing, and the ideal premiere date.

  • Below Deck Sailing Yacht should be the next franchise installment airing, but Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 will be first.
  • The premiere delay is likely due to First Officer Gary King's problematic behavior, the sexual misconduct allegation against him and the need to edit his appearance.
  • Below Deck Sailing Yacht will likely feature the same returning crew as the last three seasons.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 may be just around the corner, and viewers can expect some big changes. Bravo's hit Below Deck spinoff began in 2020 and has already featured four explosive seasons. Fans will once again jump aboard Parsifal III and experience the next adventure with Captain Glenn Shephard and his interior and exterior crew. There have been some troubling new developments with season 5, the cast, and when fans can expect the hit Below Deck spinoff's return.

While the network has been silent about Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, a lot has been going on behind the scenes that may be cause for concern. However, crew sightings have revealed which part of the Mediterranean Sea Captain Glenn will explore with his new and returning crew members. Furthermore, First Officer Gary King has also posted some clues that confirm the location and highlight that filming has already happened. A few observations also highlight that viewers are just a few months away from watching another season despite any drama signaling otherwise.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Latest News

Below deck sailing yacht has had a lot of drama.

Some Below Deck Sailing Yacht sightings practically confirm Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5's location. In June 2023, Reddit user Take_Me_To_Ibiza spotted Captain Glenn's Parsifal III and snapped a picture. The user then reshared the post, stating that the famous boat was "spotted in Ibiza." The iconic reality TV show's last two seasons covered Spain and Italy. Therefore, it wouldn't be surprising that the crew is exploring nearby areas and visiting exotic locations such as Ibiza. The location is part of Spain's Balearic Islands, including resort cities such as Palma. It seems like a perfect setup for the show.

34-year-old First Officer Gary King has been mired in controversy . While his reputation throughout his three seasons in Below Deck Sailing Yacht has largely been negative, with fans believing him to be sleazy, a pot-stirrer, and a bad boss, optics have gotten even worse for Gary. A former makeup artist for the Below Deck franchise, Samantha Suarez came forward in August 2023, alleging that Gary was sexually inappropriate with her during filming in the summer of 2022. Gary was never held accountable by production, although Bravo said they investigated the misconduct allegations.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5's Potential Release Date

Bdsy is not being released when it usually is.

The Below Deck franchise typically follows a schedule. Historically, Below Deck Sailing Yacht has been filmed in August for a Spring/Summer release schedule the following year. It usually follows after Below Deck 's OG series. The show's airing schedule has been similar since 2020. Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 1 aired in February 2020, and the next three seasons also came out at a similar time. Therefore, fans should have expected Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 to appear on their TV screens as early as February 2024.

There has been overlap with the main show and its spinoffs before, so it would not be unusual for that to happen again. However, there has been no mention of the release date, and instead, Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 is up next. This is likely due to Gary's misconduct and the public fan outcry over his continued involvement in Below Deck Sailing Yacht . In the past, certain cast members have been edited out when seriously damaging information has come to light about them.

Peter Hunziker from Below Deck Med season 5 was edited out after his past racist social media posts surfaced. The reason Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 is delayed in its release date, is likely due to Gary's behavior and the network's need to edit him from the latest filming. The Bravo network has yet to make a public statement on why BDSY is not airing next or when fans can expect its return. Since the season has already been filmed, it will most likely move forward soon.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5's Potential Cast

The usual crew will likely be returning.

Bravo hasn't confirmed the crew yet, but cast members' social media profiles hint at who may appear on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. Captain Glenn would certainly be part of the show, as he's the main icon. Gary is also expected to resume his duties as the First Officer, as some of his posts suggest he was in Ibiza. Chief Engineer Colin MacRae lives and breathes sea life, and would be by Captain Glenn's side. Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher is very busy these days but likely made time to return to the show that made her a Bravo icon. Stew Lucy Edmunds may also return since she became a fan-favorite from season 4.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Trailer

Below deck mediterranean is next up.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans may not be able to count on watching a trailer in the near future since the release date is currently unknown. But until then, fans can look forward to Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 with Captain Sandy Yawn at the help and Below Deck Down Under Chief Stew Aesha Scott returning to the Med series (via Bravo .) Check back to find out more information on Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's return to TV in season 5.

Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 premieres Monday, June 3, at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Sarissa wins Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards 2024

The 59.7-metre Royal Huisman sailing yacht Sarissa has been crowned Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2024 edition of the World Superyacht Awards .

Like all the winners at the World Superyacht Awards , the prestigious title was chosen by an independent panel of judges and announced at the end of the awards ceremony, along with Motor Yacht of the Year winner, 66-metre Alchemy .

Sarissa was noted for her high-performance capabilities and environmental sensitivity. The 33.5-metre Baltic Yachts Zemi was vying for the title and was similarly commended for her eco credentials and telescopic lifting keel. But ultimately, Sarissa ’s cutting-edge propulsion system and state-of-the-art sails and rig clinched the deal for the judges.

The sloop represents many firsts for her builder and the sailing sector as a whole. She has a square-top mainsail that is the largest square-top sail in the world, the largest 3Di RAW sail to the highest spec ever built by North Sails and it’s the first time this type of carbon sail has been used for in-boom furling.  All of this innovation, along with her clean lines, holistic design, organically flowing interior and creative layout with an abundance of exterior living spaces not usually found on a sailing boat, made Sarissa a worthy winner of Sailing Yacht of the Year.

Nominations for the World Superyacht Awards 2025 are now open. For more information, please contact the events team .

Defence Sec challenged over decision to spend £8mn on new yachts

  • MoD says it's investing £10 billion over ten years on munitions supply

Grant Shapps was challenged last night over plans to spend twice as much on yachts as on new bullets for the Army's machine guns.

The Defence Secretary faced calls to explain proposals to splash out nearly £8million replacing the Ministry of Defence's fleet of sailing boats but only £4million on that ammunition.

One MP privately mocked the plans last night, saying: 'We're supposed to be showing Vladimir Putin how tough we are – not give him a laugh.'

The spending plans are set out in the MoD's latest 'acquisition pipeline' proposals for potential contracts worth over £2 million and due for release within 18 months.

They include spending an estimated £4 million for 're-procurement' of '7.62 x 35mm ammunition' from December 2025.

Military sources said the bullets were for the Army's main infantry machine gun which is also carried on light tanks as a secondary weapon for the crew.

READ MORE:  Now military spending could be hit with £3billion cut as last week's Budget shows day-to-day expenditure falling by £2.5billion

However, the acquisition plans also included an estimated £7.8 million contract to replace the MoD's fleet of yachts, starting in January 2025. The MoD maintains a fleet of sailing boats used for training for service personnel across the Army, Navy and RAF .

However, Government sources said that the proposed spending on replacement yachts was part of a budgeting exercise for a 'future tender and is not confirmed'.

At the end of March, Lieutenant General Sir Rob Magowan, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, warned that more money needed to be spent on ammunition.

He added that Mr Shapps and his military chiefs had told the Prime Minister they needed a bigger budget to better protect the UK.

Last night, senior Tory MP and defence committee member Mark Francois said: 'We urgently need to rebuild our ammunition stocks, not least for deterrent purposes.'

Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck, who also serves on the committee, said: 'I'm sure these yachts serve a useful purpose but it can't be right to be spending more on replacing them than on machine-gun ammunition.'

An MoD spokesman refused to comment on 'individual tender processes' but said that it was 'investing £10 billion over ten years to grow our domestic munitions production pipeline and improve stockpiles'.

Mr Shapps also faced calls to send life-saving gas masks to Ukrainian soldiers after US claims that Russian forces have now used poison gas in the conflict.

Jos Sclater, chief executive of Wiltshire-based company Avon Protection, which supplies protective masks to UK forces, said: 'It is now a strategic imperative that we manufacture and supply gas masks to Ukraine.'

Watches and Wonders 2024 in Geneva was the annual showcase’s biggest yet

Fashion brand bonia launches two new watch collections, franck muller’s long island gets an update with green as colour of choice, racers in the richard mille cup regatta will sail from falmouth in england to le havre in france..

The Richard Mille Cup is back for its second edition.

With a fleet of 12 yachts racing in stages down the English Channel, the 2024 Cup will run from June 2 to 15.

The regatta will once again be a showcase for the finest vintage yachts afloat, just like the inaugural event last year.

Richard Mille says, “This is the ideal environment to admire the magnificence and beauty of these classic yachts from the pre-war era.

“And the involvement of the yacht clubs allows owners and admirers alike to come together in the true spirit of the event.”

It is set to attract classic boat aficionados, collectors and hundreds of spectators, as inshore races are staged at four host ports -- Falmouth, Dartmouth, Cowes (in England) and Le Havre in France.

The vintage yachts will also undertake testing passage races between the four ports, including two overnight races from Dartmouth to Cowes, and Cowes to Le Havre.

The Richard Mille Cup 2024 will be held from June 2 to 15.

Organiser William Collier says the combination of day and passage races with the opportunity to sail and visit iconic locations is unique to the Richard Mille Cup.

“It has proven very popular with owners of some of the finest yachts in the world.

“We are looking forward to welcoming them back and hosting this unique sporting event,” adds Collier, a classic yacht expert himself.

The Richard Mille Cup celebrates the glory of yacht design and construction from a bygone era.

Anticipated in the regatta are some of the most stunning yachts ever built, all of which, says Collier, are maintained and crewed in an authentic classic style.

The Richard Mille Cup regatta will test racers’ skills.

He says the Richard Mille Cup sets up a true racing environment in which the yachts can thrive and perform as they are meant to.

The fleet will stop at four historic yacht clubs in England and France – the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth, the Royal Dart Yacht Club in Dartmouth, the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and finally, the Société des Régates du Havre in Le Havre.

The yachts, dating from the end of the 19th century to the late 1930s, will compete in Schooner and Cutter categories.

Among them are some of the great designs, including Mariquita (1911), Moonbeam III (1903) and Moonbeam IV (1920).

The metre-high Richard Mille Cup itself – specially commissioned for the inaugural regatta – was designed by Garrard, jewellers to the British royal family for the last 300 years and the designer of the America’s Cup some 170 years ago.

The trophy is made by the jewellers to the British royal family.

The trophy is made of sterling silver, showing detailed sails hovering above breaking waves.

According to the watchmaker, the Richard Mille Cup is testament to the brand’s dedication to supporting the marine world.

“The inaugural Richard Mille Cup marked a new era in classic competitive sailing.

“This year’s event will build on these foundations with another thrilling and captivating spectacle for all sailing enthusiasts,” the brand adds.

SAIL PLAN ... No restrictions are made on materials. Insignia shall be a shovel, the dimensions and shape as prescribed on the grid plan. Official number shall be 10" in height, to be clearly legible on both sides of the sail...should not be back-to-back. Reinforcing of sail cloth shall not extend more than a 12" radius measured from behind the bolt rope at the three corners of the sail.

SAIL MEASURING ...Sail shall be measured by spreading out on a smooth flat surface with battens in pockets and a 3 lb. pull on the leech. The leech shall be governed by measurement in a straight line from the top of the intersection of the luff immediately behind the bolt rope with the top of the headboard to the outboard extremity of the clew immediately above the bolt rope. Said measurement shall not exceed 12 ft. 2 inches for a sail measured for the first time and 12 ft. 2-3/4 inches for a sail previously measured.

Nominal length of luff = 10 ft. 11 inches

Nominal length of foot = 7 ft. 0 inches

HEADBOARD ...4-½" (shall be right angles or less to luff and inboard extremity shall not exceed 1/2" in distance from the bolt rope).

No more than two battens shall be used. While sailing, the leech end of each batten shall be located no further forward than one half inch from the leech. The upper batten shall be no longer than 26" and the lower batten shall be no longer than 30".

The batten pockets shall not exceed two inches in width and shall not extend more than one inch forward of the maximum batten length. The pockets shall be spaced so as to divide the leech plus or minus one inch. Reinforcing for batten pockets shall not extend more than three inches forward of the batten pockets. No stiffening of the sail other than battens shall be allowed.

The upper girth shall be no longer than 42" and the lower girth shall be no longer than 72". The girths are measured from the measurer's marks at the leech to the nearest point at the luff excluding the bolt rope. The measurer's marks are found by folding the leech into thirds: the head being defined as the upper, forward edge of the sail excluding the bolt rope and the clew being defined as the intersection of the foot and leech excluding the bolt rope.

First look: Swan 128 – second largest Swan ever

  • Toby Hodges
  • April 5, 2023

We take a quick look at the new Swan 128, due to be launched in 2025. An all-carbon superyacht designed for long ocean voyages

yachtworld swan

Product Overview

Unveiled at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the Swan 128 is the second largest yacht ever for the Finnish yard and the largest in its current Maxi range. Construction is at an early stage, with the mould still being built around the finished plug.

The Swan 128 draws on the naval architecture of Germán Frers, exterior design of Lucio Micheletti and an interior by Misa Poggi. And the result is very much part of the Swan family – a familiar, low-profile hull with a semi-raised coachroof.

This is an all-carbon yacht designed for long ocean voyages, but with the pace to hold its own at a superyacht regatta without any dramatic transformation. Frers commissioned a full CFD study from Cape Horn Engineering to optimise the shape of the canoe body in all conditions.

yachtworld swan

ORC (Offshore Racing Congress) velocity predictions for the boat show it matching true wind speed up to 14 knots, and topping out around 17-18 knots – although Frers said the aim was to exceed this with careful engineering and optimisation.

A 6.2m telescopic keel and twin rudders as far outboard as possible offer good performance potential.

A full-beam owner’s cabin and bathroom fills the bow, and there are a further guest double and two twin cabins. A flexible lounge, office or dining area gives way to the saloon, which is raised a few steps with views out of the coachroof windows over low bulwarks.

The deck, coachroof and coaming are decked with wood. Swan’s characteristic long guest cockpit can be covered for shade and upholstery runs to seating and a pair of huge sunpads. There’s independent crew access to the twin helm stations further aft. A 4.5m tender can be carried inside the cavernous fold-down transom, which converts into a large beach club.

The boat is scheduled for launch in 2025.

Swan 128 specifications

LOA: 38.98m / 127ft 8in LWL: 35.94m / 117ft 8in Beam: 8.65m / 28ft 3in Draught: 4.70m / 15ft 3in Displacement: 122.8 tonnes

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Putin taunts the West with 'first ever' visit to remote ice-covered 'frontier region' just 55 miles from the US - as Zelensky tries to drum up war support in Lithuania

  • Chukotka is Russia's easternmost region, sharing a maritime border with Alaska

President Vladimir Putin  has arrived for his first-ever presidential visit to Chukotka in Russia 's Far East - just 55 miles from the US state of Alaska .

Putin arrived in Anadyr, the local capital of the Chukotka region this morning after flying from Moscow some nine time zones away.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border on the Bering Strait with Alaska.

The Russian president was met in Anadyr by a motorcade and was whisked away in a limousine amid frigid temperatures of -28C.

It's the closest he has come to US soil since he met with President  Barack Obama in New York City in 2015.

Chukotka is so close to Alaska that Roman Abramovich - the ex-Chelsea FC owner - was reported to fly to Anchorage in Alaska for lunch when he was the governor of the region from 2001 - 2008.

Putin's visit comes at a time when US-Russian relations are at their lowest ebb in decades amid the war in Ukraine and a growing East-West divide.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today landed in Lithuania as part of an unannounced trip to the Baltic states to drum up more support for the conflict.

Global war for control of the ARCTIC: Climate change is unlocking untapped natural resources, new trade routes... and a new international conflict that RUSSIA is already winning

The three Baltic states - all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members - are among Ukraine's staunchest allies.

'Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,' Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,' he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky's first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky said he will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia's invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia's border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Following his trip to Chukotka, Putin is expected to visit several regions in the Russian Far East to boost his re-election campaign amid the war with Ukraine, which has seen more than 300,000 Russians killed or maimed.

He is due to stand in March, seeking another six years in the Kremlin.

The only Kremlin leader ever to travel to Chukotka previously was Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Putin's trip sees him escape a wave of ugly protests in western Russia over hundreds of thousands of people scraping by in freezing conditions due to breakdowns in communal heating supplies.

In Elektrostal, Moscow region, desperate residents say they have had no communal heating - which Russians routinely expect the state to supply usually through piped hot water - for the entire winter so far.

'We have been without heating since [9 October],' one resident said in a video circulating on Telegram.

'It is impossible to be in our homes… We are freezing! We are freezing! We are freezing!' they said.
