APBA Releases 2022 Offshore Racing Schedule
With the Offshore Powerboat Association , Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore as race-producing member-organizations, the American Power Boat Association had no shortage of offshore races to consider sanctioning this season. That subject was among the topics during the organization’s annual meeting last week in Orlando, Fla., and now the APBA competition schedule for the 2022 season is complete.
The eight-race 2022 American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series kicks off May 21-22 in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix .
Here’s a quick look at what’s on tap this year:
APBA National Series Races
May 19-22—Cocoa Beach, Fla. June 4—Lake of the Ozarks., Mo. July 2-3—Sarasota, Fla. July 31—St. Clair, Mich. August 6-7-— Michigan City, Ind. September 3-4, St. Petersburg, Fla. September 30-October 2—Clearwater, Fla. October 8—Fort Myers Beach, Fla.
APBA/Union Internatonale Motonautique World Championships
November 6-13—Key West, Fla.( All catamaran classes ) November 19-20—Englewood Beach, Fla. ( All V-bottom classes )
APBA Regional Races
May 15—Ocean City, Md. June 12—Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. July 10—Eastlake, Ohio September 10-11—Morehead City, N.C.
World titles in the catamaran classes will be decided at November 6-13 event in Key West, Fla.
For the eight national events, the Offshore Powerboat Association will produce the Lake of the Ozarks, St. Clair, Michigan City and Fort Myers Beach contests. The organization also will produce the Englewood Beach world championship event, as well as all the regional races. Powerboat P1 will produce the Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and St. Petersburg events. Race World Offshore will produce the Clearwater contest and weeklong Key West event.
As noted above, Englewood Beach will be the official site of APBA/UIM World Championships for all V-bottom classes. In 2021 the Southwest Florida venue was home to the APBA/UIM Worlds for the Bracket classes.
The adoption of the Mercury Racing 860 engine as a power option for the Super Cat class was not finalized during the APBA meeting—nor was a decision on a drop-race format, a setup in which teams get to drop their worst result in a given race series.
The Spec and Bracket V-bottom classes will vie for world championship honors in Englewood Beach, Fla.
“The meetings went well,” said Rich Luhrs, the chairman of APBA’s Offshore category. “We resolved a number of things. But we still have a lot of work to do before the season begins.”

Local News | Eastlake Willoughby Offshore Grand Prix returning this July
Races for the Eastlake Willoughby Offshore Grand Prix are currently scheduled for July 10. Boats are scheduled to arrive in Eastlake at Chagrin Marine, 226 E. Island Drive , as early as July 7.
On July 9, the boat parade will start at Chagrin Marine and will go to downtown Willoughby. The start time of the parade is to be announced.
“I believe this year, we’re not going to be going up against the art festival, so we’ll be able to bring them down earlier, stay a little longer and then people are more than welcome to see the boats and meet the racers,” Mendeszoon said. “It’s not as tight of a schedule, so we’re trying to make that into a big event. It’s great that we are able to get this different weekend so everybody can have their time in Willoughby and promote the downtown.”
Last year , there were more than 20 boats that participated in the event. Between 30 and 40 boats are expected to participate this year, she said.
“There are several more who have told Steve that they will be there and there is one particular class that Eastlake-Willoughby will be part of their additional cash series,” Mendeszoon said. “They’re going to be doing like three races and we’re part of that, so that should bring us even more boats. We’re trying to get some of the big boats in as well, which I think would be the cat’s meow for us as a race organization.”
Despite the rain that took place during last year’s event, racing teams still enjoyed the setup, she said. Racers were able to pull into Chagrin Marine’s buildings to work on their boats to avoid the rain.
“I know the marina just put another storage building up over the winter, so it gives us more space to spread out and have teams covered, and not out in the elements if they don’t want to be,” Mendeszoon said.
The course for this year’s races will be spectator friendly at Osborne Park, located at 38575 Lakeshore Blvd. in Willoughby. A DJ will be set up a the park and there will be possibly live radio coverage of the race.
From the park, the course will go down toward the mouth of the Chagrin River where Eastlake residents are able to watch.
“We couldn’t close the river down because the Coast Guard did not want that, so we had to maneuver on their guidance,” Mendeszoon said. “Last year, due to the weather, we had to shift the course out because of all the debris that was in the race course early in the day. For safety purposes, we moved it offshore a bit more.”
Racers interested in registering may do so online through the Offshore Powerboat Association , GLOPRA’s governing body out of New Jersey. According to OPA, all boats must register with OPA Racing and fees paid. Racers must be a registered member of OPA Racing as well as obtain an APBA membership. Participants may call or text 732-977-5638 will any questions.
Even though the organization took a hiatus for a few years, GLOPRA is now in its 50th year this year. Mendeszoon hopes the younger generation will come out for the event to meet the racers, who are excited and love to share their stories, she said.
“They believe in cultivating and having this sport move forward,” Mendeszoon said. “We’ve got one of the most beautiful resources, Lake Erie, and both Steve and I are thrilled that we’ll be able to bring it back to show people the sport we love.”
OPA Racing welcomes racers from all over the world to come and race in one of their 15 classes, according to OPA. Offshore powerboat racing is among the most dangerous, yet exciting forms of motorsports today, and draws a wide variety of fans and interest.
“I want to send a thank you out to the Chagrin Tavern and the marina,” Mendeszoon said. “They’re hosting us and I’m excited to welcome Race Winning Brands out of Mentor as our title sponsor.”

Newberry Moore and Liebenberg to Represent USA at Paris 2024 in the Nacra 17
“Finally winning the Olympic Trials on my third campaign feels overwhelming,” said US Sailing Team’s Newberry Moore. “I am relieved and grateful. I’m proud to show my son that his mama is fast, strong, and was willing to work 10 hard years to earn the honor of representing the USA at the Olympics.”
“It’s quite a relief. It has been nearly 10 years coming and to finally secure a spot feels amazing,” said Liebenberg, USST. “It definitely hasn’t fully sunken in yet. It comes in waves.”
Sarah and David secured their tickets to Marseille halfway through the second of the two selection events. By advancing to the top 25 after three days of racing, they guaranteed a large enough point separation between them and their American competition to earn nomination to Team USA.

With the weight of qualification off their shoulders, Newberry Moore and Liebenberg turned their attention to the remainder of their regatta and finished on a high note with a top 10 finish in their final race, landing them in 23 rd out of 44 for the 2024 Nacra 17 World Championship.
Happening concurrently to the Nacra 17 World Championships were the 49er and 49erFX European Championships also in La Grande Motte, and the 470 European Championships further up the coast in Cannes, France. This batch of regattas concluded the formal racing schedule for these four boat classes ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics. Now, athletes will turn to final preparations and informal “coach regattas” for fine tuning sparring practice against upcoming Olympic competition.
